Game breaking interface bug: when paying for a new territory on level two I couldn't click the accept purchase button and couldn't resize the screen so I could. Also: this game is too slow to really enjoy.

Fun enough for a casual management revolved around making weapons. Plenty of great potato puns.

Note for achievement hunters: Be sure to 100% all heroes and research all weapons before leaving a zone. You cannot return.

For this price? It was a no brainer! I got this game with the change i got from selling trading cards and I do not regret it. It is so addictive to sell weapons and boost stats. I haven't played any of the other potato games, but I really like management type games. I think this would be good for anyone that likes the popular game dev sim. It has humor too, my first special potato was a potato based on cloud from FF7. This was totally worth the money.

Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! is a pseudo management game with the worst design choices i've seen in a game for a long time.

PROS:
None

CONS:
- Bad writing with cringe humor. All those potato puns are annoying at best.
- Pseudo gameplay. Same task loop over and over and over with unlocks that has zero engagement, wonder and excitement.
- Unbalanced gameplay. One even wonders if devs play-tested this and moreover i'm curious how satisfied with the result they had play-testing it. Did they have fun? I had none.
- Bad art direction. Everything looks mediocre at best.
- Bad sound design. Annoying loop music with generic effects.

FINAL:
1/10 If you enjoy pseudo games and have the same sense of humor of a 3rd grader, you will enjoy this. If you even have the slightest of taste in arts, games and humor, for your own sake, stay away.

"Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?" is a game about running your own blacksmithing service, in order to earn money and provide weapons to adventurers. The kind of item you try to sell the adventurer will determine how much they level-up and how much money you gain, so there's a bit of thought to be put into what you wanna sell and to who. The game's pretty cute overall, with tons of references to other games. I thought the game was enjoyable until I finished the first area, then it felt a bit too tedious to continue. I might eventually pick it back up one day, but currently, I cannot recommend it.

I bought this thinking it was a super casual game I could waste at best a hour or so on and put it down because, RL Stuffs....Wrong! First night playing and I couldnt put it down for crap!! 5 hours in and I had to literally force myself to stop!!
This is what I get for thinking this was just a small time waster... very immersive and very enjoyable!

Get the bundle, its only like $6 right now....this game alone is worth that and then some!

As much as I would like to reccomend it - I can't, it lacks balance for my taste, is a little too fast paced and grindy when you want to lvl max the heroes. The humour is good, like the references to all the pop and non pop culture, other games, but that only can't be enough to be a great game.

Info at bottom on heroes.
Don't get me wrong. It's a great concept, cute graphics, funny writing, good little shout out references to tons of games, and at times it's fun. The problem is, it's EXTREMELY monotonous. I really like management and crafting types games, and the general concept here is fun, but after a while it's just clicking the same buttons, dozens, and hundreds of times, just to see the exact same things happen, with nothing to look forward to. It's just grinding for the sake of grinding, and gets super boring. For the first few hours I was having fun, and after that, I realized I was playing it just to get the whole thing over with. Now, as I've gotten to end game, I've realized how incredibly stupid the mechanics are, which requires way more grinding than I even originally thought! Here's some points on that.

There are achievements for creating 50 of each weapon. There are 12 types of weapons, and you have to craft fifty of each, meaning, you will have to craft SIX HUNDRED WEAPONS to get all the achievements... Now yes, this is the main game mechanic, so you will craft lots of weapons while playing, but by the time I did everything there was to do in the game, I wasn't even half way there. Basically, when figuring out the math, it will take probably an additional five hours or so, just grinding through making weapon after weapon, for no reason, not even selling them, just making them for the sake of making them. This ends up being pretty bad gameplay, and shows it wasn't too well thought out... It's the sort of game that makes you hate it before it's all over.

There are achievements for each of the special requests in the game. Now these requests are probably the best part of the game, however, how you get the requests seems quite horrible. Very early on you get a request that isn't even theoretically possible at that point. So you wait forever to be able to do it. Then you get a bunch all at once that are all easy, as if the devs didn't order them properly, and put a super hard one near the beginning by accident. Then, all of a sudden there's a complete halt, and you get no more requests, even though the achievements say there are four or five left to do. It looks like they're tied to your "fame", and I've been grinding fame for a while now, and I've only gotten one more request, so I have four left, even though I've done everything there is to do in the game. The only thing I can think, is that you have to sit there for hours and hours grinding out minor requests, to build up your fame, so that you can eventually get the remaining ones. At this rate, it might take a dozen hours of just sitting here, which is crazy.

Overall, it's generally a good concept with some nice qualities, but some very bad design flaws on the part of the devs, which makes it horrifically grindy and monotonous, which makes you not only bored, but hating it.

For those still wanting to play it, or if you're playing it and want the info on the elusive heroes, here ya go.

Game is cute at the start, love all the references with pop culture eg Claude Strife (hilarious). The first world is very interesting because of all the stuff you want to unlock, but after a while it gets very grindy and even more so with the second world. It was hard to earn money and very unintuitive to look at the stats required and to allocate the correct staff to the correct workstation.

DrunkenHyena
DrunkenHyena

A very cute game. It's not challenging at all, so it's a much more casual experience.

It is about 30% too long though; it gets very grindy.

I saw a review of this game on a youtuber's channel a few years ago and I have periodically thought about the game ever since. Having never been a member of steam I just let it go. That was until a came in to the possession of a gaming PC and I joined steam; I searched for the title of the game and promptly looked to download it. To my surprise there was a little series of the game and I could get them all for less that £5 - honestly a bit of a bargain really.

This is one of my most favourite games - so far. Its cute, it's user friendly, it's easy going, and there's some funny jokes in it too. All round just a nice way to spend my time self isolating. My only negatives really is that is can be a little bit grindy trying to level up all of your blacksmiths in an attempt to ensure you've unlocked all of the weapons for that little area before moving on. Because once you've moved on you can't go back to unlock a character or a weapon. Additionally, there is no sort of built in marker when you have fully unlocked an area and you can move on without worrying what you've left behind. With that said I am trying to unlock all of the achievements for this game and that isn't always done in the first run through of every game - so I really am nitpicking here.

It's just a general feel good type of game that I have really enjoyed playing. I am currently going through my second run through in an attempt to unlock any remaining achievements I left behind. If you like easy going, fun games I'd recommend this. Plus who doesn't want to be weapon making potato?

tl;dr
Very grindy weapon shop management sim where all characters are potatoes. Funny puns and anime references. Repetitive but cute.
Achievements doable but very grindy.

Story
Your main character gets the message that his grandfather has died and you have inherited his weapon shop. The mysterious Agent 46 tells you about this, but it seems as if he does not tell you everything.
From time to time (after advancing and moving your shop to better/higher levels) the story goes on for a bit, although it takes some time.

Gameplay
The gameplay is rather simple and the menus are convenient. The most important things are explained pretty well and it is not too complicated.
Your smiths also level up whenever they have gained enough experience and you help them improve their skills too.

Looks
The game looks very cute. Everything is fitting in very well and I think it couldn’t be any better for this kind of game.

Achievements
The achievements are doable and not hard, but require intensive grinding. At first it is ok, but if you really want to unlock all achievements, you might consider watching TV while playing.

Pros

    • funny characters, puns and references
    • cute looks
    • great idea

Cons

    • very repetitive
    • achievements require a lot of grinding

Conclusion
Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! is a very cute looking game which might make you laugh now and then.
Although the grind is very present there, I still come back to this game and continue playing now and then because the ambience is perfect.
The puns and references are great too.
Some examples for characters: Agent 46, Laura Craft, Steve Mobs, Bulk Bogan, Heisenberger
Next to potatoe-puns, there are also some referendces to animes and videogames. I really enjoyed that.

If you don’t mind the grind, Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! might provide great entertainment for you.

It's a good time waster (think games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, that kind of game where you can do lots of things to pass a lot of time, and it doesn't get boring easily). Probably not good for those who are busy, because you'll just play and forget about the time :') Nice game about managing your own weaponry. Cute art. And I love potatoes.

Skronkk

It's just not fun

Grindy, repetitive loops, a story built entirely around puns and parodied video game character guest appearances, and all together not fun.

In order to get the most out of this game, unlocking all the side characters and weapons, you have to be incredibly thorough and 100% each person at each area which takes FOREVER (And you can never go back so you better 100% it the first time). You spend so much time in this game just sitting around waiting for your characters to get back. Send them out for materials, sit and wait, forge a weapon, sit and wait, research a weapon, sit and wait, send someone to sell weapons, sit and wait. IT'S. SO. BORING. AND time consuming.

Steer Clear, Just go play something else and actually have fun

I keep going back to it wanting to finish it but I just can't get myself through this game. It gets boring real fast. If you don't mind grindy games then it's a cute management sim and well made, but I can't tolerate grind in games if I wanted to grind I'd work instead! To each their own.

I mean, look at my name. Need I say anything? lol.
My nickname has been Potato for over 10 years now and I got way too excited when I found this game.
I recently bought it on sale, still getting used to it but I love it so far, I might be a bit biased though, for obvious reasons.
I highly recommend this game if you want to just craft and sell stuff while watching something or listening to music, it's a good way of relaxing and taking a break, unlike most games I play.

Keeps you somewhat busy for some time - due to its playability when watching series it kept me playing 'till the end.

If on sale for something below 3€, very recommendable.

A game with some potential, weighed down by excessive micromanagement and questionable design choices.

Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! takes much of its core gameplay (and some other aspects e.g. character name puns) from the Kairosoft management simulation games, which is a decent place to start, however a lack of innovation and sub-par implementation drags the game down:

Far too many interactions require entirely superfluous clicks — Every activity requires confirmation on completion, the option to repeat an activity must be manually selected for each and every repetition, and characters must be manually tasked back to their stations upon returning from activities.
Your objectives are trivial and banal — The main story progresses via a series of simple objectives, and these only ever take the form of either get stat X to value Y or research/craft a weapon of type Z, neither of which are timed or can otherwise be failed, nor is it possible to even lose progress towards these goals (save perhaps for manually cancelling the creation of a weapon). The only way to lose is to run out of money, but your only outgoings are staff wages and weapons both sell for far more than your smiths' monthly wage and can be produced abundantly, furthermore the game will simply bail the player out multiple times should they require it.
Various systems feel incomplete or tacked on — From your customers gaining levels to the seasons and weather, even the random events. Few systems actually have any significant impact on the player's actions or decision making, rather most serve to simply modify some stat or other by a small amount (if that), and perhaps provide some amount of visual variety to the game world.
The UI is not always as responsive as it should be — Buttons will sometimes either not respond to player input, or display the on-click indent animation but fail to actually process the action in question. When combined with the click-heavy nature of the game, this is particularly frustrating.

Overall, this game had the makings of something good; the basic ideas behind a great many potentially interesting systems are clearly there, it just falls flat trying to deliver anything meaningful out of these ideas.

Elkian Lionblood
Elkian Lionblood

A decent game with some scaling issues. Deeply reminiscent of my experience with Game Dev Tycoon: lots of engaging elements, fun research, unit dynamics (I hesitate to call any of the workers 'characters'), etc. However, it has the same problem with escalation and difficulty keeping afloat starting very early; warns you that you'll lose any unfound stuff in places that you leave, but then makes staying increasingly difficult. Some people may enjoy this sort of challenge, but it's not for me.

Both also have an issue with (less so in Potatoes, thank goodness) demanding precise results but only offering imprecise methods. Potatoes is the better one but I still have no idea why I have to leave one person in the shop at all times. Time flow is technically structured with hours and days, but this is more something I have to constantly check than an available tool. Potatoes would definitely have benefited from either a more turn-based setup or more forgiving time flow.

All that said, it has a lot to recommend it and I did have fun, it's just not for everyone.

This game is insanely deep in ways i never even realised getting into the tutorial of the game, and the humour is on point as well! If you like weapon crafting simulator, and rogue like games, then definitely give this a try, as it borrows heavily from multiple different games, in various different genres, to provide an incredibly in depth mashup of different gameplay elements, in an extremely addictive gameplay loop!

vibratoryblurriness
vibratoryblurriness

Weak recommend. It's mildly amusing for a little while, but after the first few hours I forgot about it and never went back to finish it. It's a pretty straightforward timekiller, and the humor is mostly bad potato puns and lazy pop culture references, but I had enough fun to keep going for four hours apparently and will probably try the next Holy Potatoes game in the series out, so I guess it was ok-ish?

I Can Do This All Day
I Can Do This …

I like this game very much, it was very fun for like 2 hours, then the game punish you by the endless grinding.

I tried to ignore the reviews because it looks fun, but now I believe what they say is true.

There's nothing wrong with the core gameplay, it's just the game tried to prevent you from having money. Here's a few example
1. You have to pay workers every month.
2. You have to pay to research new weapons.
3. You have to pay for workers vacation whenever they feel sad.
4. Your shady landlord who owns 99.9% of the business taking money from you occasionally for nothing in return. You're the one who runs the business.

The fact that I can't keep saving my money makes me hate this so much.

If you're reading this, as a game developer, realism is not always a good thing.

Basically I'm playing this so that I get rewarded with money just so it can be taken away when the time comes. It's a very toxic and unpleasant feeling when you think about it. A good game always gives more reward than punishment. Please take note.

Played this a lot over the last few days. It's not incredibly deep, but as a casual resource-management game, it's a lot of fun.
My biggest issue is that the smiths are always moving. There's no way to see where they're assigned as 4 of them all get up for coffee, no way to see quickly what station you had them on when they come back from their frequent trips away from the shop, and no easy way to just make a few templates of where you would like them: in each of these, you have to click the (sometimes moving) character, decide where they should go while trying to remember where you have everyone ELSE assigned, then click on the spot to put them.

S.A.M
S.A.M

I'm surprised, at first I thought I would get bored of the micro management but the gameplay is oddly satisfying. The humor is also pretty good, there's nothing quite like having Colonel Sanders and Ronald Mcdonald both working the forge.
There are a few issues though, really hated having to put back my peeps back into places after them coming back. Otherwise solid game, 8/10

This is a charming little resource management game, but it's got issues. The first couple of hours have you on the razor's edge of bankruptcy most of the time, but as you go on it gets significantly easier. By the last third of the game I was swimming in money with nothing to spend it on, and I didn't need to micromanage my workers at all anymore. With a little more balance tweaks, this could have been a lot better.

I think I almost want to be positive - but the main thing is the age showing in the game and that there are too many games that do it better.

This feels like it wanted to be a clicker / auto game before they became big... Because you can't really leave it idle without actually potentially losing..

I think the studio probably can make good new work and I expect to play the future titles... However I don't think anyone needs to start the franchise here..

This is a "Neutral Review" ... Disappointed Purchased...it looks cute n fun...it will fool you

Ugh...this game? UGH ( if you're looking for a game to get some another 50 achievements...well, get it on a Huge Sale )

The Pros?
1) I got it under a -90% sale? like...with 2 content...which is cool...
2) Tons of Funny cameo, jokes, references
3) Tons of weapon to craft
4) Tons of mats to farm

Despite being a "Management" game...it had all kind of "Unnecessary" realistic BS in a game we just paid for...

1) Time management

2) Worker's situation...like what? I just paid you stupid Potato to work...and you're angry
because you are upset after crafting 2 weapons in a row?

3) Your shop can go "Bankrupt"...whatever the fak means...really?

4) There's area to move in? Cool? but you had been warned

5) Oh yeah...this game is also trying to Break your mouse, because there's too much unnessary clicking ( you click to skip dialog, click to go window to another window to another pop-out that ask you question, click when your tatoes done their job...the contest part is the worst of all)

6) Main reason why I am dissapointed? Well, if you look at them "Freemium" games on mobile phones, they had limit and forced you to watch ads or pay crazy MTX, but you don't have to "Pay" your workers to go vacation, and all that BS ( Just Let ME Enjoy the God Damn Game at my own pace !!! )

10/10 would recommend. I've actually completed around 90 hours of gameplay across a few accounts. By far one of the best simulation games i've ever played. The pop culture references and events make the gameplay interactive and fun. I will continue to recommend this game/collection of games to all of my friends interested in the genre.

very relaxing idle-like game :)

TLDR; I love potatoes and I love puns. But I hate this game so much my salt could obliterate the 10 inches of snow outside right now.

The fact this game sells for $10 is a crime and it's barely saved by the fact it's constantly on sale for 99 cents. God help whatever poor soul pays full price for this grind-y idle game.

No, it's not a management sim. You click to make your smiths build a weapon and you wait. You send them out to sell those weapons and you wait. You send them to explore materials and you wait. None of this you get to see, the potatoes go off-screen for everything but the weapon building and even for that they just stand and hold their hands up in the air like they just don't care (like the devs). Because animating them hitting a hammer on an anvil would be too much effort for a cash grab considering each potato game seems to recycle the same thing over and over.

None of the attributes seem to matter when you can just keep selling "meh" weapons to the highest bidder to farm money, boosting things doesn't seem to matter, enchanting things doesn't seem to matter, annnd all of that really sums up the game. "Nothing matters". You can't even go bankrupt without actively trying and the game just bails you out so there's no consequences for not putting in effort.

My problem with all of this is that while this WOULD be a good idle game to start a task, minimize the game, then do something else for a few minutes before coming back but that's not the case here. You basically have to sit there and wait to click on something every thirty seconds because god forbid you look away from this ""masterpiece"" for even a second.

The only thing I say might be interesting is the puns - but you chuckle at the first one and wish they'd stop being so hamfisted with the rest. And this is coming from someone who got in a four hour pun battle against three other people. It's trying so hard to cram as many pop culture references into the game in hopes somebody will say "AHA I GET IT" and it comes off like a boomer walking up to you and saying "rawr xD means I love you uwu. DID YOU SEE? I SAID A MEE-MEE".

Overall, this game is a painful grind and the only reason I'm still playing it is so I can get enough achievements so it'll stop tanking my average so gd much. As soon as I fix my average this thing is getting uninstalled and I'm drinking to forget the experience. And bless that salty S.O.B. that wrote that salty as hell guide for this game or else I would have been screwed (I am being vague because they had to play this crap twice and deserve your attention. Go check it out). Why the developers would have the game tell you to do one thing, then say "lol nah do this" in their Discord server is beyond me, but I guess it really does show that these games are as low effort as they seem.

When I first played this game a long time ago it was crashing in the same spot so it was unplayable. I thought that it would get fixed in time. Now this game will simply not save and I can't find a fix online. How can they keep releasing this game like on switch if they cant get the much older PC version to work.

SUPER FUN! Is a great time management/ run your own business game which pokes fun at other video game franchises, movies, music, pop culture, and pretty much everything. It has no business being this fun to play. Making weapons, keeping your smiths happy, upgrading and decorating the shop, exploring the maps, leveling up the heroes, completing quests for wacky characters, you'll NEVER run out of things to do. I LOVE THIS GAME!

Absolutely adorable! Would recommend if you're looking for a light, charming management game. I only played up to the end of the story mode, but there's a heck of a lot to do beyond that. It's honestly quite the steal for the price it's at, especially if you love management games.

It's an ok game. For a couple of bucks it's worth it. It got a bit grindy pretty quickly. though the bit of humor with the names where funny. if a bit outdated on some of them.

This game is a simple managament game, it's like Game Dev Tycoon but with weapons and puns mixed with references from other video games such as PotaDOs, Agent 46, Kratodos etc. If you loved game Dev Tycoon perhaps you will love Holy Potatoes AWS?! even more.

after an to two hours it gets boring and the same, too few people to manage and no automation of boring tasks.
there is still some more that can be unlocked in my run that can help a few more hours and more to gain, it all just feels like artifical gain than something you improve or anything really new and exciting which I dont see it as.

so its generic, can be decent if you like the humor and doing the same over and over, with a feeling you can only "progress" but not do much of anything different. with future unlocks in my run might open up a bit more... but not much. as you need a smith for any action and can get more in the future.

I was feeling iffy about gameplay, but willing to give it a chance until I discovered that it dumps an *unlabeled* saved games folder (named just "SavedGames") directly into ~/Documents (the Linux equivalent of "My Documents"). This is *not* where saved games go (that would be ~/.local/share). And the hubris in thinking this game would have the only saved games on the computer is beyond words.

Played for 1.5 hours. Could not save the game. Lost all progress. No thank you.

Ridiculous. Can't even save games locally. Fix your game Daylight.
