You are dead. But people remember you, and you live through their memories of you. You are alive.

What a nice little game. The story is sweet, the controls are easy to master and the mechanics are really creative! The game is also really fun to complete! Mr Whistable’s Riddles were pretty hard for me, but hey, that's probably because English isn't my first language, so... Other than that, the game is also pretty simple! I definitely recommend this beautiful experience.

May you live past your death, through your achievements, family and friends.

You know how death is vile, and tragic, and our last great enemy in this fallen world? Well anyway, that's what it is. But you'd never find out from games like this one: terrified of mortality, capable only of peeking at it through childish platitudes, in a pastel world better suited to games like Animal Crossing where the only thought of death is in 'killing' time. Put simply, for a game about ghosts, it's awfully soul-less. I would recommend, as a trade for the 40 minutes I wasted in here, that you spend 40 minutes listening to David Bowie's final album Blackstar -- there is death unmasked, or "sliced in" as this game might say.

Let's get this out of the way first: there's not much to the gameplay; in this regard, it's simply a fancy, ocassinally clever, hidden object game.
As for the sotry, the plot itself isn't remarkable, but the point is not to find out how it ends (the ending is quite obvious from the get-go). The point is to understand why it ends the way it ends, why the characters make the choices they make -- and that is a journey absolutely worth going on. It helps that the game is very charming, and that the barebones gameplay somehow works to instill an absolutely unmatched sense of place. Everything adds up to a very gripping experience.

Such a lovely little puzzle game, really nice to chill out with a doco too whilst listening to the lovely stories that the characters have to tell. Really loved this game, totally worth the money and I got a good 8 hours out of it with the collectibles! (although, I do play SLOW when I'm enjoying something)

This game was a lot of fun. I enjoyed most of it, though there was big glitch that made parts of the game (including the entire ending) very hard to enjoy.

Maybe it was an intentional choice. I don't know. But when massive TV test patterns covered parts of the screen, it became very obnoxious very quickly.

Any time I met a ghost, I couldn't see them. They were just a test pattern. Anytime I was doing a riddle with Mr. Whitstable, the lower-right corner of the screen was a test pattern. The entire ending of the game was a TV test pattern with dialogue playing over what I can only assume was supposed to be a very beautiful scene. I would love a response from the developers, because this ruined parts of the game for me.

Otherwise, the game was great, and I'd highly recommend it.

This game is really beautiful and has an interesting story to tell. However, I do think it is a little bit lackluster. It's a bit of a glorified where's waldo or I spy game. Like I don't know who remembers this, but there were some children books called I spy. You basically search for specific objects. Just take that concept, add some story narration and you get this game. I normally enjoy walking sims with a good story, but this wasn't it for me. I think it was cause I got caught up solving some riddles, so I spent time searching for those and barely delve into the story. I think this could be a good game for people who want a relaxing and simple game. But it wasn't for me.

It was a cute game and story. A palate cleans after a horror game.
It became a little tedious after a while, looking for stuff. It wasn't quite the right game for me. I dont regret buying it, it was nice.

Everything about this game is charming. Lovely characters and character background, great voice acing, pleasing artwork, relaxing gameplay and a heartwarming story.

You play as Morris Lupton who the recently deceased curator of the museum on the island of Shelmerston. He is reunited with his dog Sparky in the afterlife, to discover from the canine that the island that he once loved is under the threat of destruction due to the waning powers of the island's protector. With the help of Sparky, Morris searches across the island for several deceased characters, uncovering their history, stories and secrets, in an attempt to find a new patron of the island before it's too late.

One thing that makes this game stand out from others that I have played before is that you have a curious ability to examine objects in the fashion of an X-ray to find items and shapes that 'shape' the future. One thing that I did love about this game is that it is full of British-isms. Being from the UK, it's refreshing to hear locally used terms, rather than nationalised ones. There are annotations for those words for those who aren't familiar with the terms as well, which is really great.

Gameplay for me, was just over 10 hours, and that was fully completing the achievements.
I really enjoyed this game, especially the music and the story, though found the ending a little anti-climatic. That's not to say it's not worth playing, I highly recommend the game. It's emotionally investing and definitely a hidden gem.

This is an awesome take on hidden object games. It's very simple, but the gimmick of zooming in and out of objects and having them slice open was really enjoyable. There is quite a bit to do in each level, and while most of it is fairly straight forward, some of the riddles are really tough. I confess I looked up one regular item and three riddles (two of which I knew what I was looking for, but some of the items are really well hidden).

I enjoyed the way the story was presented through memories. The game lightly touches on themes of death, but not as seriously as a game like Spiritfarer, and brings up some other ethical challenges. I was curious how the story would unfold, but ending is a bit anti-climactic.

The graphics in some ways are really nice, and in others seem extremely basic (ex: text boxes). This didn't take away from the game much. I ran into some minor bugs, like when in the memories, sometimes I'd have to move off the correct solution and back onto it to progress the memory. And I had to close the game out, then reopen it to get the final achievement.

This game is quite a lot of fun, and a full 100% with some minor help from the internet clocked in at around 11 hours. If you really need a new puzzle-ish game, full price isn't anything too crazy. But, given the time for completion, I'd wait for a sale. Regardless, great game and I definitely recommend it.

Sadly, this one proved completely uncompelling to me. I was intrigued by the premise, and the little bit of the story I uncovered might have been enough to keep me engaged if it weren't for the odd look of the game and the not particularly straightforward gameplay.

This game is quintessentially British. Everything about it oozes a charmful wholesome feel. The gameplay itself is unique and the puzzles keep you interested, making sure to leave no stone unturned. I can highly recommend this game if you are into puzzle games, story driven games, cross sectional cuts and brain teasers. By the end of it you will feel something. For me that was a sense of bittersweetness as the game came to a conclusion.

I Am Dead is an extremely charming indie game with a cute and incredibly realized world, but it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of puzzling. You play as Morris, a man who has recently died, who is tasked with finding a replacement to the protector of the island he lives on. Throughout the game, you visit locations around the island, learning about people who had lived on the island previously. Each chapter of the game focuses on a new character and location. All of the locations felt fun and unique. The way in which you moved around the world was interesting and unique and was for the most part fun. You progressed through the game by listening to memories about a certain character and then finding momentos. Most of these momentos were easy to find and were not unnecessarily complicated. These are required to progress so they aren’t impossible or frustrating to find. What I did find frustrating and overall pointless were the Grenkins, the 2nd tier of collectibles. There were usually about 10 of them in the 6 levels and most of them were not difficult to find, but they were poorly executed. When you get close to a grenkin, a circle in the bottom right corner, vaguely resembling the grenkin, will start pulsing. This lets you know that the item you are on contains the grenkin. Although not hard, these pictures looked nothing like the items they resembled and you had to use the visual cues from the HUD to find the gremlins. The places they decide to put gremlins felt random and there were usually always more visually distinctive places they could have put them. There is a 3rd tier of even more difficult collectibles to find, but I only found one of them, but it is there if you still want more content. The story was sweet and impactful. I really loved how it focused on the legacy that each character left behind and the impact they made on others. The ghosts you visit are not particularly special, but they are remembered in one way or another. I think as humans, we fear that we will be forgotten when we are gone, but this game attempts to provide some solace in that regard. Each character had flaws and strengths, but most importantly all felt normal. There were no chosen ones, super heros or super villains. No powers or anything (beyond being a ghost). Again it just leads to a very genuine experience where you can see yourself being any of the characters. Overall despite the sometimes annoying puzzles mechanics this game was great 7.5/10

I've seen this game a few times before, from trailers, expos, and other sources. It's in my category: games as a platform for artistic expression. And this is certainly a very unique piece of art.

I Am Dead is mechanically an object-finding game, which I actually consider quite unique among the genre: It allows you to peek into the internals of objects and people, peeling boxes and walls off like layers of onions, and discover the smallest and cutest secrets hidden in plain sight. I myself quite enjoyed this interaction, going from drawer to drawer, box to box, house to house, exhibit to exhibit, but admittedly this can be a bit onerous for others.

I'm more appreciative of the storytelling and narratives that this game offers. Through objects scattered around the environment, whether deliberately or innocently, I can place pieces together and witness the stories of small people around the scene, as well as the history of the island of Shelmerston, across time, space, and worlds. I came to know of the past, the characteristics, and the bonds of each character, and through them comes a larger picture involving war, nature, races, animal preservation, mutual understanding, and most importantly, death and departure.

Thus I really liked the game. I cannot say the same for others, but if you like to read stories, piece together details written down not in words but in finer things, then this game will certainly invoke your thoughts.

The art style is adorable, the puzzles are simple and engaging, the music is quaint, but the story... oh that story. Your heart will soar, break and then soar again as you unearth the histories of the people on the island, weaving together a tale of love, hope, remorse, trauma and joy.

I had fun. Most of the game is pretty easy; a few of the riddles were pretty difficult and a few of the memories were tricky to find.
I liked the way the story was presented, and the overall plot was satisfying. Melancholy at points, as you'd expect from the subject matter.

Mouse and keyboard is the way to go. I don't think controller support is fully functional.

If you think you are buying this game to play puzzle solving, you are wrong, you are buying this game for the wholesome journey to the west. Don't get me wrong, it still has some puzzle solving to do, but it's more on player interaction with the game, the rest of the game is all about the journey. It's a gorgeous game, telling us a warmhearted and beautiful yet touching tales, you can join me along throughout the journey in my gameplay https://youtu.be/ePBs2cTgy5A :DDD

A charming, relaxing puzzle game. At first it seemed really simple, but some of the puzzles were challenging, and I'm surprised how much play time I got out of it. It's nice that a lot of the goals are optional.

I only got stuck on the main goals at one point, in the trailer. There is a space under the seats that I didn't think to look for.

Overall I enjoyed the story and the mood of the island; fish people who like toast is an example of the kind of amusing detail you'll run into. There were some things I was less happy with - I was kind of confused how the cause of death of most characters was never mentioned, and I'm not sure I understood the ending - but they weren't that important in the end.

If you want a unique puzzle game this is it. Kept me busy for hours. It is not as easy as it seems on the surface. The riddles took me a good amount of time to get through. Though that could be because I often had to look up the English slang since I am from the USA and a lot of the references went over my head. Give this game a try!~

There are many layers to the environments in this game. From the descriptions of characters and items to the literal object layers one can zoom in and out of, "I Am Dead" contains rich locations for you to explore.

However, the game design completely discourages you from exploring any of these environments. Instead, the best way to find the spirits' items is to just look around for a thought bubble, listen to the story, and then look within the general vicinity for the object. In many cases, its just lying out, not even requiring use of the core mechanic of zooming through layers.

This design discourages players from exploring whole sections of each environment map because the players will already know if items will be found or not in the area. The game tries to get around this by adding in these little extra creatures for you to find, but I felt completely uninterested in looking for them as my understanding was they didn't impact the game one way or another.

One small other thing I disliked; there is something about the dialogue, voice acting, and story that I think was supposed to come off as endearing but, to me, just feels shallow and overly childish.

While short, I Am Dead provides a unique experience that is both existential in its storytelling and extremely addicting in its gameplay. While the game will take no time at all if you rush through the main objective, the side objectives are where the game really shines.

Sadly, the difficulty isn't quite where I would like it to be, as I enjoy a good puzzle, but at it's current difficulty, the game is more widely accessible. Spoilers for mechanics: the Grenkin puzzles really could use less "assist" in them, would make for a nice difficulty slider. Honestly, the riddles were fairly difficult as-is, loved trying to figure them out. Really, the main mechanic is the easiest mechanically so definitely go back and complete all the side objectives, they add to the game length considerably and will feel a bit more rewarding if the main objective was just too easy.

Story-wise, the game is fantastic! The narration is flavorful albeit a little cringey or drawn-out at times, but you hardly notice this while playing. My only gripe is that the ending left me a little, how to say, longing? Very vague story ending spoilers, but it just ended abruptly with next to no closure on the story.

Besides these couple of small things, the game left a very good impression and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The ambiance and the worldbuilding present really immerse you, and I would often stay in levels far longer than I needed to just soaking in the atmosphere and understanding what I could about the world the developers crafted. If you enjoy light puzzles or just a rich, short interactive story, this game is a must.

For me one of the fundamental questions about the human nature was set in Ray Bradbury's short story "The Blue Bottle". In short - the greatest wish of every person who passed the certain intellectual threshhold is to know what happens when they die. A lot of books, movies and, of course, games try to answer that question.

2020 was especially rich on unusual takes on the afterlife in games. But this game's approach was one of the most original in general, - with innovative game process of delving deep into the nature of big and small everyday objects and even memories.

"I am Dead" is a majestic tale about importance of small trinkets and big dreams. And it is also a tale about readiness - to reach a high goal one must be ready, morally and emotionally. The main character changes a lot during the course of the game. It appeared that for knowing others it's not enough to simply know the facts of their lives. It's important to understand the very essence of their personality, manifested in them and everything what surrounds them.

In "I am Dead" you don't travel far. But you travel deep. And it's beautiful.

DISCLAIMER: This is a full review, and NOT a first impressions review

I Am Dead is a game developed by Hollow Ponds and Richard Hogg and published by the wonderful people over at Annapurna Interactive

I'm not going to spoil anything in this review or say much, all I'm going to say is if you want a heartfelt story that touches on topics such as death, acceptance, moving on and memories

The gameplay is incredibly simplistic, basically it is a unique hidden object game, but it really tugged on my heartstrings and is a wonderful game with some fantastic visuals, a great voice cast and an amazing soundtrack to boot

I Am Dead is a wonderfully detailed, casual and incredibly simplistic from it's gameplay aspect but ultimately wonderful story about death, acceptance, moving on and memories

RECOMMENDED :)

Do not recommend, it has a game-breaking bug.

It first showed up with these little collectable things which you get if you examine a specific object and slice through it from a particular angle. The game gives you a hint for what you're looking for, let's you know when you've found the object in question and is forgiving enough when trying to match the slice with what you're aiming for.
Except until it decides to refuse to acknowledge when you've found the relevant object most of the way through the game. for me, it happened for one you collect from a radio on a ship; I looked it up just to make sure it was broken.
So much for that.

The story is interesting and doesn't shy away from relatively dark subject matter. The game is primarily progressed by listening to character's memories and then finding the object they're associated with, and these little story snippets are quite well-written.
Until the same bug returned, for me, in the final section of the game. I had to look for a mirror, found it, but the game didn't want to acknowledge it. Sure would've been great to see the story conclude.

Do not recommend; no guarantee the game will let you finish it.

I went into this game not knowing anything about.
At first was really confused about the objective of the game and how you move around,
but I quickly got the hang of it and it was really fun!

This game has really unique puzzles I've never seen before.
It also has a great story that pulls you in, wanting to listen to every bit of dialogue.
This is the kind of game you'll enjoy playing the first time, stop playing it until you forget about it
and then play it again having just as much fun.

I really recommend playing this!

I Am Dead is a perfect little package of a game. A game that takes full advantage of the age old "look at all the things" trope. With riddles, cross section hunts, and story items all in the mix you can choose how much you want to engage in a given section.

I found myself smitten with the world building and would love to see more stories in this setting. One interesting note that I didn't see in other reviews: it takes place more or less on our Earth and in our time. There are smartphones and fishmen and bird people who paint their eggs and in game characters visit other places like England and New Zealand. Just kind of an interesting take, instead of just insisting that it is on some fantasy planet.

I look forward to forgetting a bit and coming back in a few years to experience the charm all over again.

We never really know what we have until it's gone.

I Am Dead is a exploration-based puzzle game that is half hidden object game and half cut-it-in-half simulator. Telling the story of Morris Lupton (who is dead), we travel across the quirky island of Shelmerston to try to communicate with other lost souls by finding mementos from their past. Each of the locations is brimming with life and detail, and it never bored me through the 7 hours of gametime finding little objects that defined a character or connections from one thing to another. Shelmerston feels like a world that lives and breathes, and it only helps that NPCs move around frequently and have fully realized stories of their own. This is mainly a puzzle game, and there are various ways the game has you interacting and solving its interesting mechanic, but you are staying in the game for its excellent world design and lore. One of my favorite experiences of 2020 and another brimming success.

I Am Dead is a difficult game to pin down. You play as Moris Lupton, the deceased former museum curator on the island of Shelmerston. After drifting around for a while as a ghost, he reunites with his old dog Sparky who tells him they need to find a new custodian, a person who can appease the island spirits and prevent the volcano from erupting. To do this, they travel to various locations looking into the memories of the living in order to find enough objects for Sparky to sniff out other deceased residents, allowing them to ask if they’re willing to become the next custodian. See what I mean when I say hard to describe? In short, you figure out which items to look for and click around the environment, using the ability to see through objects to locate what you need before contacting the spirit. There’s not really much of a challenge to it, but that also prevents the game from being frustrating. There are also optional objectives in certain rooms where you can locate creatures called grenkins by cutting and rotating objects in specific ways. While the game isn’t challenging, it has a distinct charm and just feels warm and cozy to play. The voice acting, especially from Moris is superb and the visuals are basic, but stylized in a way that gives the whole island a life of its own. The story isn’t anything moving or profound, but it does always leave you wanting to learn more. It’s the perfect way to relax and just take your mind off of the world by absorbing yourself in the people and culture of this little island. As such, this won’t be a game for everybody, but if you’re looking for the gaming equivalent of a warm, fuzzy blanket I’d say give I Am Dead a shot. It gets an 8 out of 10.

Charming, extremely British puzzler with a distinctive mechanic - a bit reminiscent of Vignettes, but definitely its own game. A great way to pass a few lazy afternoons.

I Am Dead is made of vibrant, chunky 3D models that have several layers you can zoom into. The videos really do not do it justice - you can zoom into almost every unique item. And there are a lot of them. The objective of each level is always the same - listen to a story and find an item related to that story. However, the plethora of items you get to explore while doing this keeps the world engaging. There are callbacks to individual characters from other levels throughout the game.
The art style is charming & consistent. The camera movement when spinning around the islands is so smooth. You can tell a lot of care and attention went into making each 3D model. Really heartwarming.

I enjoyed I Am Dead. I liked exploring the scenes to find objects, especially the riddles. It was nice to get to know the townsfolk and see how their stories and lives overlapped. I thought the story was pretty wholesome and sweet. The mechanics didn't change across the course of the game, but given the length of the game, this was okay. I recommend I Am Dead to players that like finding objects and exploration, especially if they like getting all the collectibles in a game.

Firstly, things that I liked.
I liked the concept of fishfolks, very adorable. Toast was particularly adorable. I appreciated the slow pace of the story until it got repetitive. The motion control of moving in the space is smooth, and the graphic, the color palette, beautiful. Grenkin puzzles was fun, conceptually.
Then things that I didn't like which kind of ruined the experience.
Using the right key to adjust the angles while trying to find Grenkins is a disaster. Basically if you click too fast, it exits the zoom-in POV because right key is unlock. Confusing design in that way.
Storywise, it wasn't moving for me, instead, everything comes off as a bit flat. I appreciated the humor of the conversations from time to time, but to the end of the game I was utterly bored: it didn't break any of my expectations, I guess how the story would end, yet was hoping to see some surprises, yet no. Everything unfolds just like I expected.

I would give this game a 3 out of 5, but Steam only offers two choices, so I feel that it's still worth a try. Its concept had potential, yet the execution was not the best.

I Am Dead is a casual hidden object game, crammed full of sentiment and whimsy. Its core gameplay gimmick is that you can zoom in on objects, clipping right through their layers to see inside of them. Sometimes the contents are surprising (in funny and/or bizarre ways), but most of the time you are simply treated to a unique level of care that has been put into modelling parts of objects that would never need to be visible in any other game or circumstance.

I absolutely adore the art style. The world is jaunty but peaceful, vibrant but subdued, strongly characterised but cozy. This game is, in a word, gentle. It needs to be, in order to present its nuanced stories about a handful of deceased characters.

That all said, I would recommend splitting this game across multiple play sessions, as the nature of the hidden object game makes it very repetitive. I made my way through this game in short bursts, stopping whenever I got tired of hunting through every single object in every single room and area.

I made a point of hunting down all of the collectibles and solving all of the 'riddles' (optional scavenger hunts), which meant scouring each environment for every instance of some specific object. I doubt that's thrilling gameplay for most players. It does mean looking at (nearly) everything in the game, which... does suit a certain meticulous or compulsive type. This is, ultimately, a game about examining hundreds of objects. That isn't usually my bag, but this game was beautiful enough to make me follow through with it.

The voice acting was hit-and-miss for me - really a matter of personal taste - but all of it was of professional quality. I couldn't help but feel that some of the performances would land better with a younger audience. Nothing intrinsically wrong with that, but I just wasn't into it.

Putting aside its endearing aesthetic, what makes this game shine is the depth and nuance of its storytelling and character development. The stories are diverse and richly textured, and beautifully portray the complexities of individual lives and how they intersect with others. There's a lot of raw humanity in these stories, and the society in which they take place.

So there it is. I Am Dead is a game that explores what it means to live among people and to be remembered by them. Its title merely reflects the state of the protagonist; through the course of the game, the player explores what comes after.

Fun, relaxing, and quite frankly an amazing puzzle game. Love the excitement of solving a puzzle to find em Grenkins, the riddles are hard too but satisfying to get it. Music is soothing and amazing alongside the beautiful world. 9/10

A sweet, story-based exploration/hidden object game.

Pros:
* Beautiful music.
* Relatable characters that are easy to like.
* Six "levels", plus one more that's the endgame.
* Lots of collectibles.

Cons:
* The "find all X collectibles in a level" achievements reset when the map loads (eg: quit/load, etc), so you have to find them all, all over again, if you missed one.

TL;DR: If you like exploring and stories w/ some "hidden object" gameplay, 9/10; else, avoid.

Edit: Clarified a vague sentence.

Net positive game, but I always wish steam had something between the yes and no rating. Great story telling, beautiful artwork, and charming characters. My biggest complaint is that the puzzles are a little nonsensical. Sometimes the clues help, but at other times the solution felt random. Additionally, I am not quite sure what would have been nice to add, but something more was needed in the game.

A nice, cozy little game with a heartfelt story and charming characters. You can see the ending coming from a mile away, but it's enjoyable to follow. The art helps a lot.

Your main mission is to gather mementos to recall some ghosts--the easiest part. Fortunately a few things can be a bit challenging and up the playtime: finding all the grenkins, little spirits that need you to slice something *just* right; solving the riddles, which is the most challenging part by far; and finding every instance of a certain object/animal like thermos and cats.

All in all the only negative thing I can find about the game is the title. I'm sure someone somewhere could have come up with something more...enticing.

I adored this gamed so much. It isn't terribly long, although if you get all the little items along the way it makes the game play a bit longer. Still, it was cute and fun and worth it. I definitely teared up near the end. It was easy and nice for someone to kind of zone out to but also be engaged.

I held very high expectations for the game when reading this preview from The Verge (https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/14/21366568/i-am-dead-game-preview-swit…). The idea of seeing through any item and finding secrets connected to dead people is lovely, and the fact that all items in this game were built with multiple layers is fascinating, especially during the first hour of game play.

There's also much to praise about the art style, the voice acting, and the inclusive stage setting.

The problem is with the game play. From the trailer and the interview with the developers, I was under the impression that the whole island could be explored freely, and as the main character is a ghost, I can fly over or dive into anything, even into the characters' minds! How exciting would that be to immerse myself into a colorful open world, where all items are modeled with details from inside out. But the reality is, this game is very linear, from 1 stage to another. During each stage, you only have access to 1 place: the light tower, the park, the street, etc. It's finitely not the feeling of freely wandering about the island, but more of going through a guided tour. The supporting characters are very talkative, directly telling you what to do next, and you must follow. The puzzles are repetitive. After 2 hours of playing, I became very impatient solving similar puzzles again and again.

The bottom line is, it's a well made game, built around the very attractive idea of scanning everything. I still recommend it to kids, or adults with more patience. But speaking of myself, I couldn't even finish it.

I Am Dead is a game where you explore the lives of people you once knew via the objects that were once important to them. The gameplay is that you can see through objects and slice into them to explore what hides inside. This works well with the plot because you’re seeing how these items were important to those you once knew and how they shaped the ones around you. Whether or not the items have retained their significance, they now rest somewhere; sometimes being used and remembered and sometimes not. It really drives home the point that even after you’re gone, people will remember you and the mundane everyday items you once used can be the triggers for memories, both happy and sad. People are complicated and everyone is on their own journey. Simply interacting with someone in a small way will leave a memory of you with them, oftentimes bound in these items.

The game itself is very plot driven where you want to find the nuances of these people’s lives. Most of the items you interact with aren’t needed for progression but tell you about the background of the people on the island, how they lived, and the context in which they grew and formed connections with others. From a pure gameplay perspective, however, you’re basically doing a scavenger hunt for items. They’re always in the mini section you’re in so it’s not frustrating considering how many items are in the game overall but often it’s trivial. The mechanic itself is really interesting and would be cool in another point and click to do typical inventory management but I’m glad they didn’t do that here and just stuck with a narrative rich story as it drives home the point of just finding the items while as a ghost. The game does try to diversify the mechanic's use by having riddles and hidden figure you need to find but they're a distraction and are still just a scavenger hunt.

Overall, it’s not challenging and more of an experience of a simple but touching story.

I am on the fence about this game. One the one hand, it is a lovely story. You play a guy who is dead and returns to his home town. He reunites with his dead dog and the two go on a quest to locate six ghosts of former residents in order to save the town. Each ghost is summoned by retrieving memories about them from the living and then finding an associated memento. The community is presented in six parts, each richly detailed with a host of objects and characters to explore. It is quite a complex narrative that a diligent gamer can piece together by following the residents through the scenes and learning about their relationships.

However, there is an optional layer for achievements that turns I Am Dead into a Hidden Object Search. There are specific items to collect in each scene (for example, cats in one and birds in another), riddles with objects to find, and a very large number of 'shape matching' exercises (find an object and then manipulate it to match a shape). This becomes very tedious as you exercise the same mechanics over and over and over. Towards the end, I was no longer paying attention to the story and just trying to slog through finding the last few objects.

I would recommend playing this game for the narrative and skipping the collectibles, riddles, and patterns. I think this would make for a better experience and reduce some of the more frustrating control issues. Then, if you are so inclined, circle back through for achievements. For me, the repetitive nature and the sheer number of objects to find detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

I found the controls to be very counter-intuitive. The WASD keys, in combination with the mouse, are used to manipulate objects and to turn the scenery (relative to your position). The shape matching, memory focusing, and riddle object retrieval are somewhat finicky and I spent quite a bit of time finessing my mouse movements multiple times to get things just right.

So, it is a sweet story with cute artwork and a nice sound track. The voice overs are pleasing to listen to and you have the option of clicking through and reading conversations. The game saves on exit and there is a map that allows you to return to a previous areas for missed collectibles. There is a lot to explore and the story is put together in a unique manner. But, hunting for objects (opening and drilling down into every item in every scene) wore me out!

This game is cute and warm hearted. But I wouldn't really call it fun. It's a hidden object game, except that you can slice through object, which is kind of cool. That alone, though, doesn't make for very good gameplay. I always felt about the same as when I can't remember where my phone is and I'm looking all over to find it. Now, the stories are kind of nice. None of them are especially engaging on their own, but they build together into this quirky homely town that's fairly interesting. A bit too much reading item descriptions and looking around randomly for to turn interesting into fun, though.

Raskolnikov
Raskolnikov

I'll give this a reluctant thumbs up because of the beautiful visuals and clever mechanic of floating through objects as a ghost. Unfortunately, this was not enough to keep me interested. It's a very slow, relaxing game about the lives of ordinary people. Charming, but not very exciting or suspenseful. If you like that kind of thing, check this game out, but it wasn't for me.

I Am Dead is a kind of hidden object game, except the objects are hidden inside other objects you can look through with your ghost powers. The game is about exploring people's memories of a deceased person and then finding their mementos hidden around the place.

Personally I found the game a bit too slow for my liking. Interacting with everything takes a bit of fiddling, the dialogue is a bit slow, and finding the secondary collectables means also sitting through some short unskippable animations.

So while the visuals are nice and cheerful, the topics can be a neat exploration on the topic of life and death, the gameplay wasn't to my liking.

vecsec

A wonderfully charming hidden object/puzzle game about normal people who happen to be dead. Not the longest, but I'd say to me, it felt just long enough. Finishing the story is easy enough, and the grenkins, riddles, and collectible achievements are a fun motivator to play with the mechanic and explore the world more.

A pleasant little game. The world is colorful & fun, with quality voice acting. The final chapter is creatively & satisfyingly told.

On the other hand, the gameplay is very limited. At times it felt like a slightly more interactive Blue's Clues.

But if you want to escape for a bit, Shelmerston is a lovely place to visit.

Easily the best 'I-spy game with a great story' ever made. Great writing and voice work, along with a lighthearted feel and pacing, and you've got a great game to relax with. Also, the soundtrack is perfect.

The payoff is not the goal on this one - it's more a relaxed 1-2 hrs 'at a time' game. Took me about 8 to get everything.

Don't let the sound of the title fool you, there's no 'fail-state' here - I'm not sure why everyone feels the need to have one in games.

A chill, fun visual puzzle game with fantastic voice acting. A few hours well spent.

Visual
4 / 5
The visuals are a gorgeous feast of vibrant colours. Each location is distinct and very pleasant to look at. The dissection/zoom mechanic looks great with objects containing lots of little hidden details. You will find yourself looking forward to investigating almost every object and checking multiple angles. The motion is also very smooth – despite a lot of panning movement at times, the game shouldn’t upset people who suffer with motion and motion blur.

Audio
5 / 5 voice acting
4 / 5 overall
I Am Dead had phenomenal voice acting. The actors remind me of the British children’s television that I grew up with. The dialogue is fun, the delivery is energetic and the voice actors sound like they were having a blast. It is an absolute treat to listen to.

The OST is quite active but always firmly in the background of the soundscape. It is chill with a nice bubbling energy beneath the surface. The Mr Whitstable track is well worth the effort to attain his certificate.

Gameplay
4 / 5
Gameplay is a combination of a visual scavenger hunt and the dissection/zoom mechanic. You search each level for some objects that are hinted at. Once you have found all the objects, you do a quick herding minigame and the area is complete. Although straight forward, it is enjoyable, gets you used to the core gameplay mechanic and facilitates the story well.

You can also pursue the Grenkin and Whitstable side quests which encourage you to fully explore each level. For the Grenkins, Sparky (your dog) will notify you of a Grenkin in the scene and give a dissected shape. The shape itself will make a noise when found and you will be required to match the shape and orientation. Although registration is finicky, the game will auto rotate the object once you are close to the solution. As for Mr Whitstable, he will offer riddles/hints which require thorough knowledge of the level to complete within the time limit. Do not expect to find them on your run, instead take note of the hint and dig around. There were some rather difficult ones that felt great to find.

Controls
4 / 5
I used a mouse and keyboard during my play through. I found the controls were generally very responsive and intuitive – you quickly get used to the constant zooming and rotating. I did encounter some occasional dead mouse inputs in the menus, but these were easily rectified by just using the keyboard.

Story
4 / 5
The story is simple but rather enjoyable. Strengths include the well written dialogue and the fun character designs. The world may seem small at first glance, but you will quickly discover enough depth to entice your curiosity and carry you through to the end.

Achievements/Completion
5 / 5
Very attainable and never felt tedious. They force you to explore every level thoroughly which I found enjoyable – there were always hidden surprises to keep things fresh. The Mr Whitstable certificate is also incredibly catchy and feels like a great reward – you have been warned.

Final Thoughts & Rating
4 / 5
I found I Am Dead to be charming, vibrant and just plain fun. I highly recommend it, even at full price.

This game took me about 5 hours to complete, but in those 5 hours I was transported to an enchanting coastal village and fell in love with characters and the island itself. The puzzles take a moment to get used to, but once you understand how they work the majority aren't difficult, and can feel somewhat repetitive, but it isn't the puzzles that gives this game such charm. It is the way the game makes you fall in love with the entire island.

I Really loved this game.

The setting reminded me of my childhood, growing up in the southwest of England. It nails the seaside town. From the decomissioned mines on the pier, the foam bananas and shrimps in the sweet shops, to the RNLI donation box in museums!

The writing, and acting was fantastic, although the story is fairly sombre (its about death after all). The characters all had real depth and felt very real.

The gameplay was also super novel. It could be quite repetitive for some, but if that is the case, for you - just do the story stuff. The riddles and spirit finding is just additional gameplay for completionists or those who enjoy the core gameplay loop.

I would suggest buying this game on sale. I had a lot of fun playing it and enjoyed the voice-acting and the characters. However, there is less gameplay than I expected and the game mechanics are simple. I found myself disappointed when I finished the game, the ending was abrupt and it felt like the story was cut short. To make matters worse I had to replay sections in order to get achievements for tasks I had already completed. With all that said, the story is pretty good and while it might be overpriced it is definitely still worth a play, even just for the world design

There are cats in this game and I had to find them all twice.

This game was truly a pleasure to play. I found it's take on "what comes next" after death to be quite original and heartwarming. I really enjoyed the style of the puzzles--rotating and zooming into an item to see what might be hidden inside. Some things are just what you expect them to be, and others have fun surprises. I really haven't experienced anything like it. I also liked that you come across things to investigate that are wildly different, from something as ordinary as a toaster, to something far more grand, like a monument with a tomb hidden deep inside.

But my favorite thing about this game by FAR was how you experienced memories. It's really well done and beautiful, but also serves as something fun to engage with while you're listening to that person's stories. It felt really satisfying every time you lined the picture up. I just loved it!

If you like games with a great story, unique puzzles, and lots of heart, I Am Dead is definitely one worth checking out.

Annapurna has some visually striking games under their name and this one is definitely up there. This is a very unique take on what I'd call a hidden objects type game, but with an overlay of heavy story-driven elements. The things you're tasked to find aren't always right in front of you, some are hidden and others are riddles. Too increase the complexity even further you're given an x-ray ability allowing you to dive into an object down to the smallest item to find the piece you're searching for. As an example, one of the most difficult objects for me was a valve inside a squirt-gun, inside a suitcase, on a cruise ship, in a bay full of other ships..... yeah, a tiny valve.

Voice acting quality in this was top tier, characters told their stories well and the conversations didn't feel like they were just being read from a script. Graphically the game appears simple, but I think it's fooling us by using simple colors for textures, objects and scenes are all well put together and have a good level of complexity to them. Sound and music quality are great as well making you want to take your time searching the world and mostly just relax while playing.

Overall a strange but charming puzzle game about being dead.

First off.... If i could give this a neutral rating i would.. Cute game, good story and fun puzzles. I can't recommend it however because the puzzles aren't very hard and they start to become a chore. Took me 7 hours to beat and by the end I was ready for it to be over. The ending baffles me though.... So whos the custodian now? Morris?.... Did they let the joint blow up?..... who knows haha. Not sure what I paid but if this were on sale for 3 to 5 bucks and you wanted to kill time, then I'd say go for it. When I check off "No I would not recommend" All I mean is I wouldn't bring it up in conversation and tell people to download it asap.

What can I say about I Am Dead? It is a game of love, memory and understanding your own important part in the world.

Everything about this was lovely. The artwork, the puzzles, the story; I even almost shed a tear here and there. The attention to detail livened up the game play so much, looking into little things like coffee cups and bags and seeing the most interesting things; and the mattresses and electronics having actual springs and parts inside! Overall, beautifully crafted and I am definitely going to replay and finish the achievements. There are so many little things to enjoy and experience outside of the crafted story line and puzzles.

It has a cute story I suppose, but the cons outweigh the pros:
-the controls are bizarre
-the "memory" sequences are annoyingly drawn out
-the ending is the most unsatisfying thing I've seen. It would have been so easy to answer the question of who becomes the next custodian but they cut it short and left it open-ended.
Ultimately I can't recommend the game.

A really different puzzle game with a calming and slow paced atmosphere. The story behind the game as a whole is engaging and beautiful. You gain a good connection with each character you meet, finding their stories through the memories of others. An easy to follow tutorial of controls is provided at the beginning of the game. I Am Dead will definitely be going down as one of my favourites. :)

Fun game, but the rotating images gets SUPER repetitive. Also, trying to view certain items from an angle to unlock the little creatures is VERY problematic. Worth playing once. Would not play over again.

BeetleBits
BeetleBits

Another indie game with great style and good intentions but it falls flat on everything else. The "puzzles" if you can call them that, are basically all the exact same. It is extremely repetitive. Even playing in 20 min chunks to break it up isn't enough to power through this game.

The good: Fun style, like Untitled Goose Game, Wattam, GNOG. Great voice acting! Beautiful art and nice music.
The bad: repetitive puzzles, clunky controls.

You use the mouse wheel and arrow keys to scroll through mini environments to click on people's memories and find objects. Scrolling IN on an object reveals the inside (this is neat but often doesn't reveal anything new or interesting). There are hidden shapes that match up with a picture, and using the mouse wheel you rotate to find the object. The mouse wheel is also used to reveal memories, that are swirled up, and as you rotate the wheel, it comes into focus. You have to do this 5-10 times on each memory, and there are about 5 memories in each environment. It never changes, and the stories themselves aren't that memorable.

The plot is pretty non existent, you play a newly made ghost who must find a new Guardian so the island's volcano doesn't explode. By finding the memories of a dead person you ask if they want to be the guardian. They say no and you go onto the next one.

I played through 3 levels and couldn't take it anymore, my brain was numb.

An original game mechanic that quickly becomes tedious. Most of the objects you can slice through are there to fill the world and don't add anything to the story. The game is more about finding needles in haystacks than solving puzzles.

The world is beautiful and feels lived-in. You can find lots of small details about the lives of background characters. Unfortunately, these details are mostly presented in walls of text.

Quaint Seaside Story about the Afterlife

I think my title sums it up well enough. Your the spirit of a dead guy and your hanging out on your beloved hometown/island when your old dog convinces you to assist in keeping the island from volcanically erupting. To do this, you have to find someone to become one with the island to calm down the islands volcano.
From here the gameplay loop really starts, in that you will be dropped into an area where you need to search a specific persons memories to find a clue to a certain object. You move around the area on a circular rail system, so not super constricting but not freedom either. Once you find that marked person after some searching, everything is in self contained sections/areas/containers in this game, so you'll click on their subsectioned area and continue to do so until you can click on that person (example, click on Ship, then click on room with person in it, then finally click on person). Once you go through the selected person's memory, then you have to infer where these objects will be, based on the characters and the area your in (example, your looking for a brass mouthpiece thats shaped like a cone? Check the moonshiner in the lower deck and see if he uses any cones). Most of the time these objects will be inside other objects, so you get to use a cutaway feature where you basically xray map your way through life. And thats what you'll be doing for 4 hours if you rush through the main story. Other activities are riddle scavenger hunt deals, playing hide-seek-and-cutaway with little island spirts, and running around at the end of each section as the old dog collecting bits of spirit.
Story wise, its alright if slow, atmospheric, and steady, are your deals. The game's experience is really just taking a stroll through this island town and experiencing the inhabitants in humanely intimate ways. Which i find nice ya know. Other than that though, the story kind of misses on the ending, so come in with a 'the goal is the journey and not the destination' kind of mindset for maximum enjoyment aye. Don't get me wrong, the ending makes sense, but it makes you connect a dot or two that aren't properly set up story wise.
Music is alright, it fits.
Art style is fun and creative but you can see that in the pics.
Overall, a pleasant perspective giver.

This game should be titled I Want My Money Back, because that's how I feel after playing it. Maybe I expected too much or it was an impulse buy I didn't read enough about before deciding, I don't know. It's got a cute and unique concept but honestly in practice it's just tedious and boring... I like the art style and all but man, I got through to the second character you have to find (out of... five? six? idk) and I can't play more, it feels like work, in a bad way (and that's coming from someone who's got something like 150 hours in Factorio...). I also can NOT stand the voice acting, I turned it off as soon as I could, absolutely insufferably annoying. That part is kind of my bad, since the voice acting is also in the trailer but I somehow thought it couldn't possibly be as annoying as that throughout the game... well, it is. Sorry folks but it's a no from me.

I wouldn't say this is a bad game - maybe the lower end of "Mixed". But I wouldn't recommend it to friends who are into adventure/puzzle games, so thumbs down from me.

Some of the spatial puzzles were kind of fun and engaging -- trying to find objects that, when viewed at certain angles, would yield cross-sections matching some target pattern. But while some were enjoyable, others were a little too vague and abstract to be meaningful - especially if they were hidden inside other objects.

The art style is nice too and I thought there was a good variety overall.

But everything else is a miss for me. Lots of dialogue and unskippable animations, and puzzles that lacked any sort of logical flow. Trying to find a pencil sharpener, only to locate it at the bottom of a filled teacup. Or trying to find a piece of toast, just to find it inside a toaster hidden underneath sofa cushions in a bar lounge. There's no logical reason to look for such items in these locations.

Several puzzles often boil down to "check everything." Puzzle games simply aren't enjoyable when they rely on tedious and exhaustive trial-and-error.

The games does have an intriguing story and cool art style but it lacks gameplay. The actual game is only to find objects which is fine for those who like it but I was expecting good puzzles.
