I don't know where everyones optimization issues are coming from but it runs perfectly fine on my system... 3440 would be a nice update. So far the scenery is like a cross between Bloodbourne and Doom. Pretty cool creepy stuff. My only problem so far is where the hell is the sound?! I don't really understand the negative reviews are pretty harsh I mean its a 20 dollar game... 17 now... not a AAA title with a massive budget. You people should be ashamed.

Absolutely atrocious. The only positive element of this game appears to be the static assets that are made and implemented quite neatly in Unreal engine, but there are too few of them and they're recycled over and over again. Collisions, mechanics, level design, hit boxes, sound design are awful and outdated. No idea what's going on in this game, the setting seems random and the world is random and not coherent. Frustrating controls and very limited interaction makes playing this a chore. Not Recommended unless you want to apraciate some elements of graphic design that some may find interesting although too heavily inspired by biomechanics standards. to put a number on it, let's be generous and say 4/10

Here is my first video of Inner Chains. Hopefully my words can reach the devs. From my point of view, the game has promise, but like what everyone said in the reviews, it can be fixed. Subscribe to my channel. :)

So I actually have played the game already and I'm gonna change my review from, Unplayable to I like it so far.

Things I like:
+ The HR Giger design
+ The atmosphere
+ The whole Idea behind it
+ Graphics
+ Enemy design
+ Weapon design
+ Learning/searching runes

Things I dislike:
- Shooter mechanics
- Tooo fast Weapon overheating
- Surround sound doesn't work
- Meele attacks
- The game needs some good puzzles
- Not enough Weapons 😁

After I finally played it I can say, it's not perfect but in my opinion a good start for a great game, just patch it till it works and I'll be happy with it!

Nice intro with the audio and videotrack timing is off for a couple off seconds ,but i still don't know what kind of game this is because of the fact that it freezes completely after 1 whole second of loading the actual game.

Definately not worth spending your money on this item because well let's be honest it has been put together poorly if it will not even start properly.

Game had an interesting concept and beautiful environment that was well made. Everything else about the game though...simply put was a total shit show. Game shouldn't have been released in the state it was in. This company however shows promise and the ability to make great games. They just need to work on polishing their games better down the line.

Ok, 53 min into the game and the only problem I ran into so far is cutscenes show a split screen on right side while p[aying at 21:9 aspect ratio-Ultrawide monitor. The gameis GREAT! Really immersive at this res and full FOV. Good story line, Terrific, realistic graphics, do not know my fps, only that it runs very smooth with no hiccups with only a I7 4930k cpu and EVGA GTX 980ti s/c edition. Everything is maxed out and I turned out the lights for even more immersion. Scaaary...
Only thing I noticed (no big deal), is the sound does not appear to be Dolby surround-that would really be awesome. Also, the mouse speed, is too fast, had to drop my DPI settings in my mouse to the lowest (200 dpi) and it still accelerates rather quickly. No sensitivity setting for mouse. But I;m sure whatever bugs are there, and improvements to be made, wi;; come with future patches. The devs have come a long way since origina; release and are still working on more developments.
It would be great if once all patches are done, DLC's would be available for purchase to keep this great game going. I was very leary and hesitant to purchase, but now I'm very glad I did. Highly recommend this game to anyone who likes this type. If you have an Ultrawide monitor with the hardware to support the graphics, you are in for a treat!
Thanks devs for your hard work and follow through with the patches.

Well I loved the weird world and setting, artwork and environments were great. I wouldn't recommend this for the game play as it was a bit boring and like doing house work. Combat needs a heck of a lot of work. Also would be great to add some puzzles too. Music is the same track played on repeat. But I reccomend it if your'e looking forward to other "Hell-Scape" worlds such as Scorn and Agony, this might be a prelude to those titles. Looking forward to playing again if there is another patch and seeing where the developer improves it.

Artwork, aesthetics, narrative, and detail here are visually stunning. Inner Chains is one of the most heavy metal games I've ever played. (as far as visual design is concerned)

As far as gameplay is concened, It's nothing like what the appearance might suggest... And it's not fun. This game begs to be an 90s-esque shooter, like Quake or Doom. But, nothing about playing the actual game here is fun. It's just really slow and tedious. Honestly this is my only big gripe about it. Yes it launched with some technical issues that made it almost unplayable, but most all of those problems have been remedied.

Guns, while they look super bad-ass, just aren't very effective or satisfying to use. But they do start syphoning your blood when you run out of ammo, which is kinda cool... In a weird, nasty, heavy metal way.

I didn't really have "fun" playing this game, but I enjoyed experiencing the environment. I don't think this game is bad really at all, but I must admit that I am kinda dissapointed in it. I wish it was a 90s shooter, but insted its something like a walking/despair simulator with guns that sort of "shoot". I don't think it deserves a thumbs down at all, and I'm a little irritated that so many people gave it a bad rating based almost entirely on the now fixed performance issues. But at the same time I resist recomending it, because it's just not fun. I think it's worth playing though, but perhaps wait 'till it goes on sale.

I'm almost 3 hours in and I absolutely dig the game so far. The aesthetic is amazing and the weapons kind if remind me of the weapons from Prey (2006). It's pretty relaxing.

Opening my eyes, I clearly understood - SHE is calling me! Like many others, I slowly walked to the temple to be stabbed in the name of GOD! No one wanted to repeat the fate of the past generation - whose greed, godlessness and commitment to technology - destroyed the entire planet, reducing it to the state of coal. On which we now live.. But the Goddess promised to bring Us out of the Darkness! And lead us to the Light, through Chaos!
The crowd of living meat was endless. We walked in a constant stream to the temples - like cows to the slaughterhouse.
But suddenly, someone in front was overcome with fear at the sight of his brother's throat being cut in cold blood, and he rushed to run back. Pushing and screaming - he tried to run against the current, which did not even slow down - and to my regret, I met Me on his way. Raising my head, I only managed to see his frightened eyes when the guard fired a dart at his head - and he was dead he fell on me like a load and... Together with him we fell off the platform into the darkness...
Waking up after the fall - I realized that the voice of the Goddess had left me. Now I am a renunciate. Now I am a Heretic. And the only thing that awaits me is death.

Pros:

    • + Graphics
    • + Great environment
    • + Small logic tasks
    • + Achievements
    • + Optimization

Minuses:

    • - Action. Shooting, as well as opponents, are entered just so that they are.
    • - AI opponents. They are rather dumb, but because of this, they can seem unpredictable.
    • - Search for tablets - to learn the language.
    • - And following from the previous one: Lack of plot. Since you do not know how to read the hieroglyphs of this world, you will not understand its history for the first passage. Therefore, in order to read the frescoes, you need to play the game twice. There is also no character backstory or purpose. You just move forward, destroying everyone in your path.
    • - Enemies have the ability to walk through walls
    • - Boring BOSS.
    • - Weak ending
    • - 90% of the time passes in the corridors and catacombs, where everything is uniform.

Total:
A game in which you will spit, stare blankly at the monitor screen - but still reach the final.
A beautiful world, strange creatures and buildings, well-designed levels - they look great for... a walking simulator, or a quest. But to my great regret, we have a shooter - which, according to the idea of the developer, should capture more audience. But here it is done disgustingly! Opponents are stupid, they can strike when they are far from you. Close combat not only uses the keyboard, not the mouse - in addition, a missed blow from the enemy can turn you in the opposite direction. This is especially terrible when you are attacked by a whole horde of opponents.
Also, the opponents have rather small hit boxes and a strange, sometimes random amount of damage received. So you can blow off the head of one enemy - with a shotgun shot, and the second one will have to land a few dozen before he decides to fall to the ground.

I note the terrible idea with the study of the alphabet. Since from the very beginning of the game we meet frescoes on our way that tell us the story of both the world and God. But due to ignorance of the language, the player simply does not understand anything and wanders in a world without a plot. After several such frescoes, I simply stopped being interested in them.

In this connection, we can safely say that the game has no plot. We do not know who we are playing for, for what reason all the inhabitants are sent to the Temples for suicide, why is a woman considered the most important villain in the world? Why, having become a Heretic, do we oppose voluntary death?

As you can see - the players have thousands of questions - but so few answers...

The game will appeal to players who like games in the style of "Agony", "Void" and "Succubus" - here they will find a similar world and about the same gameplay.
If you are seduced by beautiful screenshots and think that you are buying a cool shooter, then I will disappoint you. This is not true.

Dispite the mixed review i bought it,because the style of the game is so great, BUT!!

Clunky controls, horrible camera, game failing to load properly resulting on objects and monster floating, absolute stupid heavy dificulty or weak weapons, enemy poping, death by falling and random heavy fps drop even when facing plain walls, there is no story telling ,no comentay of the protagonist of what is hapening why am i seeking whatever the objective is,the only thing i know is that i failed to follow the path, and thats it,no mouse sensivity slider,no key rebiding.

ANOYING!
Some of the" scenes" if we can call them that (they are very very rare)the character starts gulping its really irritating, remeber that screeching guy on youtube? the monter screech just like him,its so irritating instead of seaking for a more obscure sound they got the Screeching meme...

THIS GAME IN ITS CURRENT STATE IS A ABSOLUTE PIECE OF GRABAGE!
IM HEVILY DISAPOINTED WHIT THE GAME.

TL;DR: You'd wish it was a walking sim.

See, Inner Chains is supposed to be dark and disturbing shooter, slow paced and tactical.
First of all, yes it's distrubing, dark and oozing with atmosphere. And it looks absolutely amazing. Jaw dropping amazing.
The setting is rather deep, but story is pretty much non-existant. To be fair it only adds to disjointed experience the game provides. I also has to mention narrator which does a proper job in broken english. It feels like he is disconnected from life, forgot how to speak properly and keeps drifting into his own thoughts.
Now the problems:
Yeah, the game is slow paced, but it isn't tactical. All the tactics involve 'use environment a bit'. What matters the game as an FPS does not work. Only one gun is actual gun and shoots. Two others are electro-thing and flamethrower. And they are frustrating and boring to use. Enemies are bullet sponges and have melee attack range a lot bigger than yours (not to mention that it's very hard to actually hit anything, which combined leads to very frustrating encounters). In the end the game does not work as an FPS - it's broken, frustrating and boring shooter. You can get it for the looks, but just don't get it for complete experience.

The most beautiful game I've ever played since we happy few but that's a whole nother story/review

Pros: beautiful visuals, combat is so much fun

Cons: performance wise it stutters a lot, some parts of the game are really hard even on easy

So aside from that, this game is fun I really like it so die to the performance this game gets a 7 out of 10.

Once the stutters are eliminated ill increase the score

I first noticed Inner Chains in several horror games compilations. After all those mixed reviews i wasnt sure if i should go for it, but i finally got it on sale.

The visuals are absolutely stunning. It looks just awesome, in a giger type of way. The first intro chapter is just loaded with terrifying visuals and places.
The gameplay is pretty simple: Press buttons to unlock doors, fight enemys and so on. You can collect letters to unlock the writings on the wall. The game autosaves often enough, so i wasnt even thinking about saving in between. You get ammo and hp from some weird stations.
So far i met 2 kinds of walking enemys: Walking/jumping zombies and some kind of guards, who have the same lightning gun as you do. But there are also stationary enemys, like tentacles and some form of trap like creature who catches you and pulls you up into his mouth (like those orange things in half life 1, exactly the same)
Weaponwise so far i got the lightning gun and the flamethrower, and of course my fists as melee. The lightning stuns the enemy. You can basically hit an enemy with the lightning gun, melee attack, and then shoot him again, repeat till he drops. The flame thrower is not only good against the stationary targets, you need also to get rid of those red wooden bushes. Just carefully tap mouse 1 and aim for the bush and it burns down.

Sadly there are some technical issues. I have weird sound bugs sometimes when i shoot the lightning gun. There are also fps drops.

The horror in this game is totally based on the atmosphere and art. So far i had zero jumpscares or scary moments, i always felt i was in control of the situation and never needed to run and hide, but at some times i think i could have used the duck/sneak ability to get past some enemys. So if youre looking for something with scares you, this game propably isnt what youre searching for, but as i said, the atmosphere is absolutely awesome.

So far i finished chapter 2 and i can say that apart from the bugs this game is awesome and for 12€ a fucking steal. Enjoyed every moment so far and im pretty sure that this is the first time, that i took so many screenshots.

This original game has a very cool dark atmosphere with good sound effects. I cannot recommend it though due to the repetitve gameplay, the horrible optimization and the clunky combat. The weapons are odd and the movement is too slow for effective evading techniques. One gets the feeling that it is still in pre alpha stage.

5.5/10 which is a thumb down.

I generally like to start my reviews off by giving a snippet of the plot, but that's hard to do in this case. I'll be quite transparent and say that I had no idea what was going on at all, at any time, in terms of story. My best guess is that you play as some fallen soul who has to battle through purgatory and kill some evil queen. There's more information laid out on the store page description than what's ever included in the game, so it's best to just leave it at "you're on an alien planet, many years in the future, and it's dystopian as well as hostile".

Fans of Zdzisław Beksiński and H.R. Giger rejoice, as the art direction of Inner Chains is influenced heavily by these two fabulous, dark, dystopian artists. The amazing visuals and immersive atmosphere are the only real praise-worthy points of this game; the environments, though very claustrophobic and linear in nature, are richly detailed, as are the character models. Visually, nothing here is recycled and it's very pleasing to see something so fresh. Don't celebrate for too long however, because as the old saying goes, beauty is only skin deep.

On the other hand, the rest of the game leaves much to be desired, and fails to create a lasting impression. Despite the plethora of weapon upgrades that one can acquire, the gameplay is exceptionally shallow. It follows in the footsteps of the Painkiller series if it were a linear FPS game, and nearly all of the guns feel directly taken from those titles. The enemy AI is almost non-existent, as hostile creatures will shamble around without so much as acknowledging your presence until you're right in front of them. The entire fighting portion feels unfinished, almost like it was a last minute idea to prevent Inner Chains from being a walking simulator.

In the end, Inner Chains feels somehow incomplete, whether it's the lack of continual narration, that almost all of the text and enemy remarks are in an alien language, that the enemy AI presents no challenge, or the fact that the story is not fleshed out at all, leaving the game to feel a bit pointless. Perhaps it's a combination of all of the above. There's just something missing, and it makes the entire experience feel hollow. The 2-3 hours of playtime definitely does not warrant a purchase at the regular price of $21.99 CAD, and if you're wanting to give it a shot it's best to try it out when it's around the $5 mark instead.

Rating: 2.5/5.0 - It's not awful, but it's not great.

Very disappointed in this game. While the level art looks great and has cool atmosphere, pretty much everything else about the game is just not fun.

- The enemies have a weirdly large health pool. 10 Shots or so to the head to kill them? Silly.
- All the guns have some sort of cooldown period on them for some bizarre reason. But the enemies don't seem to have the cooldown. So you have to swap your gun every 5 seconds or so to a gun that isn't cooling down. Just terrible design for a shooter. It does not feel good to shoot the guns at all. The audio feed back and the way enemies react to the gun doesn't feel right.
- The enemy variety is lacking. I encountered about 5 different enemy types by the 3rd chapter (I do *not* count the stupid vine things). They're all fairly boring to fight.
- The vine thing that smack you if you get to close? Just the dumbest "enemy" i've ever seen in a shooter. They are just obsticals - you just go around them. They're a nusance and nothing more. Very poor mechanic.
- The AI is terrible. They just walk at you in a straight line with way too many hitpoints shooting you with their guns that do not need to cooldown. If you have to fight more than 3 at a time you have got to peel one off at a time to fight individually or you will likely be overwhelmed. I've never played a shooter like that ever in my 25+ years of experience.
- You move so slowly for a shooter than you cannot really outmanuver your enemies. It feels like I'm walking through tar at all times. The run speed isn't all that fast either (the run speed should be the regular walking speed) and you run out of breath so fast. I suppose it's because you're a frail slave, but it's just bad design and is not fun. In other games there's more enemies and they're dangerous but it's balanced by giving you faster movement and the ability to avoid taking damage.
- While the art is cool, the level design is poor for movement especially in a combat situation. Too much stuff to trip up on and some invisible walls blocking areas.
- Lots of areas where it looks like you should be able to jump up but the jump is next to useless. Don't bother trying to explore nooks and crannies, you're just not able to get in there.
- The scrolls you pick up with instructions on them are interesting, but should decode as you find more letters throughout the game.

If you're looking for a cool Quake-like game this is not it. It's more of a walking simulator with some disappointing shooting now and then.

This games only really redeeming feature that I can see is the presentation and art-style which might convince you to get it because, credit where credit is due the game is VERY good looking visually. But the game itself once you get into it is just all wrong. First of all the movement speed is GLACIAL, like I'm not expecting an old school FPS or arena shooter or anything like that but this shit is ridiculous you move SO SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW, and this only makes the already boring combat even more boring. There are only three weapons which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I mean SIN pulled off the three weapon thing really well, but these weapons even though in concept they are cool, you have a lightning gun a toothy kind of nail gun, or tooth gun, or bone gun whatever, a flame thrower and all of these can be upgraded with new alt-fires, all of them are boring as hell to use. The enemies feel as sluggish and lifeless as the movement and the combat basically boils down to holding down mouse 1 while slowly backing away from the enemy in question. (making sure you dont back into a tounge dude which will kill your ass instantly). OR just standing outside of the enemies pitiful sight distance and shooting at him until he dies with a long range weapon. The enemies don't feel very challanging, at least not in an entertaining way, your going to die far more often from just taking fall damage or being eaten by plants than by getting killed by the brain dead enemies that are hilariously easy to cheese. If you do its usually going to be because you already lost too much health (from plants usually). The enemies themselves are about as sluggish as you are and dont really feel satisfying or interesting to fight. Other than that your mostly going to be walking around plants and pushing buttons or switches before walking slowly through a corridor and than doing it all over again. Its just not worth it. Its kind of sad because there are a couple of really interesting ideas like the upgrade collection and the trade off between health and ammo (if you run out of ammo you use your health instead to fire the gun.) and the hostile flaura and fauna and even some enemy in-fighting but if the enemies themselves have boring behaviour and the guns arent fun to use and the enemies dont react very entertainingly to being shot than theres little point. Good Ideas, bad execution is how I would sum it up.

driptrat

So I am really enjoying the visual style of world this game takes place in and little else. The visuals of this game for me are enough to make me set aside the clunky sluggish gameplay and the overall glitchy experiance. But It's not enough to allow me to recomend this game on its visuals alone for it's $20 price. I got to it when it was on sale for $6 and that feels a bit more reasonable. A little more polish and this game could have been one of the greats. For your money you are buying a lot of potential, but not the greatest execution.

The concept art, background and scene design for this game is outstanding, there are hints of every nightmare - the Alien Derelict, Quay Brothers, Pieter Bruegel - it is a credible vision of what hell would be like if it existed. I really like the dystopian scenes that had industrial decay with a hint of alien artifacts. Mixing this with catholic religious architecture will definitely resonate with those of us who grew up in that religion.

I didn't totally get the misogynistic tone though – all the NPCs seem to be male with only female being the boss level creature – although you don’t actually fight that, just lots more male warriors. The exposition voice came in between chapters repeating the same thing, which made no sense to the story – actually, no sense at all. I don’t think it was a professional voice actor, maybe just one of the developers?

While the backgrounds were amazing, the game play was repetitive and mediocre. The enemies were all the same, and once you knew how to defeat them, it was easy. There were no real puzzles, and while finding the alphabet symbols slowly revealed that graffiti in various places, it was just semi-religious mumbo-jumbo. The sound fx were ok, but there was only one cliched cinematic musical phrase that came in whenever there was some sort of peril – this became boring to the point of irritation.

The overall sense I got of this game is that it was created by concept artists and level designers. The focus was all on the look of the levels, there was no discernable story arc, no interaction with NPCs other than to kill them, and the game play was repetitive and easy. I wonder if they ran out of budget.

I would love to see the concept artists and level designers from this studio team up with the Valve team who did the Half-Life series – I am sure they could create something amazing.

I paid GB £5 for this, I am glad I didn’t pay full price.

Wont even see combat till chapter 2 and zero instruction in the game. Looks pretty good graphic wise but the combat is DEAD boring. It looks like one thing and completely plays like something far worse. Dont buy for more than $5 as its not worth dragging yourself through this unoptimized nightmare.

Following in H.R. Giger's footsteps

This is the first, immediately noticeable thing when it comes to playing Inner Chains. The entire world it presents to the player with its biomechanical creatures very much reminds us of Alien as the Nostromo crew landed and were getting close to the Derelict in the distance.

This is a dark world with a strange clan that easily labels people heretics and eventually burns them at a stake. We play some sort of a slave who commits a mistake on his pilgrimage and is labelled as a traitor. We have to run... or more like attack and kill everybody in our path to reach safe haven. All this in a surreal world where everything - even the flora - is extremely hostile and can easily eliminate us.

From walking sim to action-packed terror

Chapter 1 plays like a walking sim. It is deliberately devoid of any action so that you can familiarise yourself with the world of Inner Chains. And this is, after all, the point in the story where you are considered an obedient servant. As soon as you reach Chapter 2 all hell breaks loose. Everything, and I mean everything tries to attack you. There are a lot of traps throughout each level and thanks to the level design patrolling enemies can easily be lured into them.

The problem with Inner Chains is that it's missing any narrative that's supposed to be there to guide us. I know this is a low-budget software (initially started as a Kickstarter project) but a proper journal would have been nice where the protagonist could update us on his goals and thoughts. Instead, the same guy who narrates the intro introduces each chapter; it is unfortunate that he repeats pretty much the same thing again and again.

We only have 3 weapons. One used for shocking, one for crowd control (a flamethrower, of course) and one for making precision shots. These can be refilled at their respective refilling station (the animation looks pretty cool). Most of the time we will be looking for a lever to remove electrified walls (the lever with its human head looks quite horrifying) or the opposite - creating a bridge or ramp to be able to proceed. And while completing the game's 4 chapters we meet half a dozen enemy types.

An unfinished business

The game looks tremendously good. This is all thanks to the latest iteration of the Unreal engine. It has its price as the FPS value often drops under 30 at certain sections (mainly in chapter 2) without any reason and stuttering is also common. Inner Chains looks unfinished, unoptimised and we barely have any option to change in the graphics menu. Also, if you have a controller plugged in the pop-up key bindings are shown for this device and not for your keyboard and mouse. Pretty annoying and one wonders why the creators didn't spend sufficient time to address these matters.

There are clipping issues here and there and an audio glitch at the very end when completing the boss battle (or perhaps the audio is deliberately missing there). In order to increase the longevity of the game the creators hid letters. These are, basically, tablets (not the computer but the old fashioned ones) that show us the translation of certain symbols into the English alphabet. As you complete the game the texts on the wall slowly reveal themselves. It is unfortunate that these are mainly propaganda messages and they do not have any real added value to our journey.

Inner Chains feels like an Unreal 4 tech demo. It is short, has a missing story and has optimisation issues. It has a very good, atmospheric soundtrack and its art design is quite unique so the screenshot aficionados will definitely rejoice. Too bad as Inner Chains could have been much, much more.

Thank you to the developer, Telepaths tree, and Publisher IMGN.PRO for providing a game that offered a unique world for me to escape, explore and enjoy.

Inner Chains walks the line of game engine demo and differences of creative design within the developers. It feels the game got away from the devs who maybe Epic employees for all i know, or its simply a project they put together to add to their resume. Having said that i still enjoyed my time with the game though understandably it will always fall into that it’s just ok/hate it category for each player.

If you read the story synopsis on the Steam page for this game it sounds absolutely epic and it sounds like someone took some time to write. However in game what you get is you died, it looks like hell, you are told to follow the path to resurrection or face eternal damnation, or something to that extent. It all cumulates with a predictable ending that makes no sense from that synopsis. What i got from the story and writing is it is more religious and cult like than anything biomechanical as they put it.

As for gameplay Inner Chains is simple to pick up and play. After the initial set up chapter which is mostly walking forward for story purposes, you will be put into pretty large areas with multiple paths to explore and escape to the next area. In these areas you will also be looking out for stone tablets that will reveal a letter of the alphabet that will then help decipher anagrams on posters that are littered throughout the levels. These posters will help with the story and you will see the confusion i mentioned. I also must mention there is no tutorial, or HUD, which is really not needed for the limited gameplay, but i would encourage experimentation as there were a few things i found late that was surprising.

It wouldn't be an FPS without guns and enemies and in Inner Chains its just fine. You will acquire 3 different guns throughout the campaign one that shoots electricity, a flamethrower and one that i think shoots spikes, but it's basically a sniper rifle without zoom. Actually there is no ADS or zoom on any of the weapons so it's basically hip fire all the way. They all each have alt. Fire modes that when used up close will be an instant kill. The flamethrower is the highlight as it spits fire and kills anything almost instantly and you rarely will have to worry about ammo as it is spread throughout the levels generously.

Enemy variety in the game is very weak. You will probably see almost everything you will fight in the first 2 hours of the game all with the same attack pattern. The standard zombie and runners will come straight for you and you will also run into enemies wielding the aforementioned weapons. There are also some devil dogs who are the biggest pain as they jump around and circle strafe. You have the ability to melee which is simply hitting X, but the hitbox for the dog is off enough that the fight will go on longer than needed. You may not die often (no difficulty options) which is for the best to enemies but some environmental hazards may get you once in awhile. The levels are littered with trees that will whip you if you enter their radius and there are these snake like creatures that spit fire if, well, i'll let you figure that out.

What saves Inner Chains from being cast off as just another mediocre indie game is the absolute amazing art direction and graphics. As i have reviewed about 5 Unreal 4 games now its just par for the course. The game looks fantastic, from the lighting, textures, and particle effects, to the sharpness of objects in the world. As most of the game is set in what seems like a large castle or underground cavern some different environments would have been welcome. While graphics are the just the canvas for the creators, the artist for Inner Chains deserve serious props. There is some absolute amazing gothic, dark imagery in this game and probably kept me going to be honest. As i said the environments do not change much but every area had me stop and admire the scenery.

I also want to mention the level design, especially later in the game, is pretty good. As i looked for every letter (got 24 of 26) i explored every area thoroughly and always found a path that almost would bypass all trouble, or get you right to the next area. One issue is performance which seems to always be hit or miss with U4, but for the most part i was getting 40-60 throughout the campaign until near the end when it dramatically dropped to like 20-30 and during the final fight was even worse. There are not a lot of graphic options but it does support ultra wide which is always awesome.

I only spent $6 on Inner Chains and i have to say that is the max price point i would recommend the game. I think it marketing itself as an FPS really does it self a disservice seeing there is a lot of melee combat and its the exploration and story that are far more interesting. It's almost like a lot of AAA entertainment today, it's wrapped in this absolutely amazing, gorgeous world with bland, competent, unoriginal gameplay.

Played at 2560x1080 max settings MSI R9/390 getting 40-60 FPS until late game when it struggled 15-30 FPS

Positives

Unreal 4 graphic highlight reel
Amazing Art, atmosphere
Immersive music
No Hud
Nice level design
Competent gameplay
Just the right length of gameplay

Negatives

Combat is just not exciting
Walking speed and longer run need a bump
Major FPS drops near the end and during last fight
Only 4 chapters but they should have been split into more
Dat voice narration

From a graphics and level design stand point this is amazing but there are a few things that need to be adjusted and fixed in this game.
I played the game on a 3440 x1440 monitor with a gtx 1080 so it looked amazing. But there are some critical things you must change in the options to get it look and feel right. Max out the FOV slider to the right and turn off mouse acceleration. Despite the issues below will still give it a thumbs up just because the graphics and levels are great. But dont spend 19.99 buy it on a sale. I got it for 4.99.

Now for a list of issues:
1. When scenes come up where your character slows down it doesn’t remember my reverse mouse during those segments.
2. Level 4 had a door that wouldn’t open up and had to reply to the last checkpoint and tried it again and it worked.
3. The cool down on guns, ok I get it but the game needs a little longer on that timing.
4. Increase walking speed. Also character runs out of breath too fast running when pressing shift. That time duration should be 4x what it is.
5. Occasional slowdowns in game especially in chapter 1 & 2.
6. Mouse acceleration should be turned off by default. Not sure why anyone would ever use that.
7. FOV should be increased by default. By not doing that it hurts the experience for players who don’t tweak games and this can make them sick.
8. When the character moves he gets stuck on geometry too much like going over roots and requires a jump. This should be changed so you can just walk over stuff better.
9. Add more unique enemies.

i sadly have to change my positive review of the game to a negative one after encountering two game breaking bugs in the last chapter.

one game breaking bug was a reproducable bug, that prevent a door from opening if you killed an enemy too close to it.

the second game breaking bug is this:

cant recommend this game anymore till those major game breaking bugs are fixed.

initial positive review:

The game is okayish i guess but one important thing first: IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A FAST PACED FUN SHOOTER IN HELL, THIS GAME ISNT FOR YOU!

its more like a better walking simulator with 3 "weapons", you can toast some "trees" with a flamethrower and you can grill some kind of not very dangerous human sect cult "enemies" with an electro shocker, but calling the game a "shooter" would be too much i guess.

but i like the atmosphere of the game (for me at least a way better "hell" feeling than 'Agony' for example), the graphics are pretty okay and even if its a "better walking simulator" it doesnt feel boring or lame to me.

i bought the game on a sale for 5€ and its worth those 5€, but to be honest paying the full price of 20€ would be a bit too much. 10€ or maybe 15€ would be a more fair full price for the game.

I don't give this a recommended rating, but at the same time it isn't a bad game. There are, however, several things that bring it down IMO.

First of all - I'd usually start a review with a summary of the plot, but in this case I don't understand what the heck it's about, so describing it is tricky. And, of course, not understanding it (even having finished it) makes it none too rewarding at the end.

The game is an FPS of sorts, in that you do have ranged weapons and melee combat, but it is far from run and gun gameplay. It's not COD or Battlefield in some sort of hellish dimension, and it certainly isn't DOOM, as the combat isn't that slick and fluid. There is only three types of weapon - an electrical gun, a flamethrower, and a bolt gun / shotgun kind of weapon. They can overheat, so firing them is limited, and despite having alt firemodes the choice (and end result) is rather basic.

Enemy variety is quite limited too, and though the game does make you need to switch weapon types it doesn't really liven up the gameplay. In terms of the enemy it gets repetitive visually, and mechanically, quite quickly. I found it moderately compelling still, but I'd be lying if I said this was exciting, or that it is a game which will appeal to everyone. Particularly since the resolution of the story was a defining factor to continuing playing, and it was still unclear at the end what it was about. There is a mild puzzle aspect to parts of the level design, but it isn't hugely challenging or rewarding by itself.

The visual design is stunning - offering a really twisted amalgamation of natural environments that have manmade buildings sprouting out of them, along with organic growths, and things that look part organic and part metallic, or made out of bones. In this regard it is sublime, and technically delivers the experience quite well - at least in terms of the aesthetic. The performance, despite several patches, is not up to the job and has regular stuttering and a lack of smoothness.

A lack of updates within the last year would suggest this is an abandoned game. It is fully formed to play, but underwhelming as is. The gameplay in particular is too mediocre to really recommend it, and the bad performance is the final nail in the coffin. It's not very challenging, and doesn't take too long to finish, but there are no real highlights along the way.

Get it cheap, as I did, and as long as you don't expect perfection it is okay. But even cheap it is a hard sell depending on your tolerance, and at full price I would say definitely don't get it unless you can afford to throw money at witnessing an artistic spectacle that is lacking in every other department.

Mostly technical & performance review at this time:

Graphics option IMO doesn't have enough options to tweak performance. Supports 16:9 aspect ratio; i'm glad that after watching a review of a Beta version a year old, the odd aspect ratio has been eliminated.

Graphics options are:

    • resolution
    • Quality=High (Dunno what Quality refers to; texture filtering/geometry/lighting/particle effects?)
    • Anti-Alias on/off
    • V-sync on/off
    • Frame rate limiter: 30, 60 or 130
    • Blur on/off
    • Grain on/off
    • Chromatic aberration on/off

A bit disappointed that optimization seems a bit poor but this may be due to the intricate level design with high polygon count and good lighting. System config at the time of running this game;

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Ryzen 7 1700 @3.5Ghz (overclocked)
Gigabyte G1 Gaming AMD RX-470 4GB GPU (stock speed & cooling) at 1920x1080@60Hz
2x G Skill F4-3200C16-16GTZ (16x2GB DDR4 SDRAM UDIMM overclocked @2733MHz
Asus PRIME B-350 PLUS (Promontory)

System RAM usage 5.23GB and GPU RAM usage 3.1GB . Couldn't hit stable 60fps after the initial intro no matter what was toggled off. Best was 53-59. Changing in-game resolution to 1600x900 and all options on except V-sync managed to reach stable 60 fps while maintaining desktop at 1920x1080. Additionally, the GPU was running hot at 81°C; this i believe is due to lack of tweaking options. Having the ability to turn down more graphic options could reduce GPU utilization and therefore bring down the temperature. In contrast F1 2010 can run at 1920x1080 in Ultra setting and only reach about 71-73°C and if i turn down some options, the temp would hover around 60°C. I know i know it's still quite bad; Singapore has a hot climate, my room has no A/C and lastly i dunno how to fix better cooling system for the GPU.

Basic game review
Cons

    • The intro narration needs much improvement in terms of pronounciation and pace. Dunno if there's more narration throughout the game.
    • Background music is basically a constant drone or hum; a pad sound. It sets an aptly dark and foreboding atmosphere but lacks variation to sustain interest.

Pros

    • Creative & unique level design that despite its necessarily drab colors due to its setting, is quite spectacular to behold. I bought this game just to see how it would look with AMD GPU rendering. Previously on my old GPU, Radeon HD6770m, the game Heroes over Europe didn't render properly the ground textures. On this new GPU it looks correct.
    • The premise of the game intrigues me from what is alluded to in the intro; seems to have deep spiritual significance, well known perhaps but from a different perspective.

Since i just barely begun playing, more detail review will be added later. Worth a look when discounted like it is now at 80% off; only cost me SGD 3.98. Tentatively 7/10.

Interesting game. It presents itself as kind of a survival horror as in, there is a kind of stealth mechanic where you can sneak past enemies. However a lot fo the time you are forced into combat, which isn't horrible and has a mixture of melee by hand-to-hand combat and your ranged weapons. The melee combat was cool in the first chapter, kind of reminded me of the combat in Zeno clash, but later in the game it becomes kind of redundant unless the enemies are able to close in on you. Occasionally you'll reach a point where you have several enemies that you cant defeat with your weapons alone and you will have to use some of the environmental traps to take them out or slow them down. Gameplay doesnt change too much over the course of the playthrough though

There are three weapons, an tesla gun thing, a flamethrower and a projectile weapon. Not much to say about them, they are pretty much what you expect, you get alternate fires later in the game too. There is a minor puzzle element with the doors and switches, but it isnt complicated.

Best part of the game to me is the visuals and the setting, the developers obviously put a lot of effort into creating an environment that is both horrifying and inviting. As disgusting as the bio-mechanical landscape is, its kind of appealing and i actually felt like exploring as much of the world as i could. Worst part was the optimization, some other people have mentioned stuttering and frame rate issues despite their hardware being up to the task. I had these issues as well but it wasnt game breaking to me. I recommend getting the game on sale, full price is too steep i think considering the length of the game, the lack of gamplay variety and the bugs.

I've played this game for an hour now and I'm already half way through (with no intent to finish it). There are audible and graphical bugs everywhere. I literally watched the world load in at two different times. The narrator is terrible, and in the opening cutscene he was incredibly long-winded. He, honestly, didn't stop talking for almost the entire thing. The weapons feel weak and go from being full on ammo to empty in a matter of seconds. The melee attack has a very short range, and requires almost pinpoint accuracy to hit anything. So in case you couldn't tell already, the game is completely broken. This can clearly be seen in the first level. In this level you have no weapons yet, it's basically a walking simulator. That's not the broken part, though. Certain guards in this area have weapons, now you can't melee strike an enemy when you look at them, however.... If you stand next to one, press the melee button/key, and quickly whip your camera over to them, you hit them. Now they're not programmed to attack you in this level, which means that you can repeat this until they're dead. Then pick up their weapon, and start running around shooting everyone. This game is not worth the ridiculous $20 that they're asking for it. Hell, it's barely worth $5. The only thing I liked about it was the aesthetic, but that's just not enough to save it. Don't waste your money on this trash.

I want to recommend this I really do. This is why steam needs a middle option. Game looks and feels amazing (aside from the sexist lack of females or lack of children). It seems you are some prisoner? in some dystopian... place. Just from the start it has solid atmosphere but damn the micro stutter/choppy framerate now and again just kills any momentum the game starts to bring and kicks your ass out of any immersion.

Game is not long and is very simple and easy to play and figure out. Bracelet is health and glowy part on weapon is the ammo. Unlock letters to see what is written in places. Overall game is pretty dang cool. If you can get it on sale for 5 or below I totally recommend it as it is far far above most of the trashy crap that plagues steam and is an actual game. Sure it is not the greatest but it's alright and worth trying for the nifty setting

Red Star, Blood Moon
Red Star, Blood Moon

I honestly have no freaking idea why this game isn't more highly rated. The best I can come up with is because it's an indie game from a small Polish team that didn't have the money to spam the internet with PR and marketing shilling for such absolute pure trash like Fallout 4.

To the people complaining about things like combat and melee: git gud fgts. No I'm being serious here. Did it never occur to you guys to blast someone with the lightning gun to stun them in between punching them? I spent the first like 3 hours cruising through so easily it was a deal to me losing any ammo or healthbar just because it was messing up the perfect score full/full ammo health. And then I realized those recharger things were literally everywhere. You guys are seriously complaining about draining ammo too fast? I mean seriously?

So in other words the gameplay is fine.

Soundtrack is good though kind of stock at this point, like background sounds could be Alien or Dead Space you wouldn't know the difference. Only problem is it seems to catch on a weird loop and end abruptly before starting again at points.

Visuals and art direction are AMAZING. Like holy shit dude. This game is basically FPS Scorn. Like not even a poor man's Scorn I mean this is the trailer for that game just with more action. Very heavy influences of Giger and the Necronomicon-esque aspects including manual are a nice touch.

Story? Didn't get that far. See the whole game is basically you wandering around not knowing any of the language in a completely alien world with no clue what's going on and piecing it together largely from the environment, and finding letters for a substitution cipher a la Dead Space style.

All in all I would HIGHLY recommend this game. At full price it isn't bad but definitely get it before the sale ends $3 is practically theft. I'm a fan of wandering around completely alien or unusual immersive environments. Lust for Darkness didn't totally fail to deliver but it wasn't a good game, SOMA was cool, this is excellent.

Inner Chains is a Beksinski painting masquerading as an FPS.

EDIT: I think I left this before finishing it, but having finished it years ago, I can say the game itself as a game is "meh" tier as an FPS; I was expecting more guns and stuff introduced later, and that never happened. A lot of things are rudimentary as an FPS or even just as a game.

That stated rest still stands, tl;dr basically this is an interactive Beksinski painting. That's what it clearly was designed to be, and I thought it succeeded with that. It's no Scorn, but as pure navigable art you can explore, it's good.

Inner Chains is basically a painting you get to walk around inside.

This game is amazing! It has a fantastic atmosphere and horror feeling. (Think: Lovecraft and H.R Geiger had a baby) The only thing that I want to complain about is the lack of optimization, the game stutters and freezes from time to time when stuff is loaded and it has quite a lot of framerate drops. For me it is not a big deal since the game is so cool in every other way!

This game got mixed reviews, and there is a reason why.
All in all, I quite enjoyed my time with Inner Chains. I can't get mad at such a short game, especially when the mechanics work so well. This takes only 4-5 hrs on the first playthrough, depending on how much you explore. And you want to explore, because if you want to know what's going on, you'll have to figure it out on your own. Throughout the levels you can find tablets that translate a letter for you, so you can read what the signs and banners say, so you know why the world is what it is. Even then, you have to speculate a lot, and the fact that there is only one voice actor with an accent doesn't make things easier.
Gameplay wise, you get only 3 weapons, each can get upgraded to get a secondary attack. I quite like the weapons actually, they work fine and you have to both clear puzzles and hazards, and defeat enemies with them. The puzzles are generally simple and you get what to do very easily, so no challenge there. Level hazards like whips and basically HL2 barnacles can also be used to help you in combat, which adds some planning and quick thinking to combat.
What people hate about this game become appearant very quickly after staring the game. Movement is slow, you don't know what the hell is going on, performance tanks, aiming weapons precisely sucks, keeping track of your health is harder than it should be. Most offensive is the level design. You want to go find all the letter tablets, but the level design often leads you somewhere weird or somewhere that looks like the right way forward and not a secret path, but most of the times you just come back to where you diverged, making each level practically a chain of 8 you have to loop over and over again if you want to explore. Signs you are given that go into different directions don't help this.
I have to talk about the art design tho. So much of this game is just inspiring and amazing, especially for such a short game. If more story background got explained it might have been even better. You could make a wallpaper of everywhere you look, it is that great. Figuring out what's going on is fine too, if you have the patience. What little this game has to offer, it does right, even if it feels underdeveloped.
Got 5 hrs to spare? Want an easy atmospheric game? Get this, if you can handle the performance and the terrible level design.

While there are some not-so-great elements, for the most part this game provides a very enjoyable experience (though I can totally see why some might not like it as much as I did).

Positives:

-graphics- The game is truly beautiful and the environments and designs are quite clearly influenced by (and in some cases directly borrowed from) the work of Zdzislaw Beksinski. The backgrounds and the interiors, as well as the character/creature designs are just fabulous (and wonderfully grim, in a biomechanical way), from the various plant monsters, to the weapon/health refueling stations, to the tentacled vision bringing pod creatures. As a huge fan of Beksinski, I was instantly in love with the visual look of the game. Hell, having strange biomechanical creatures sprout from the surroundings to indicate checkpoints is such a thing of weird beauty, it deserves mention on its own.

-plot- While there are aspects that are a little heavy handed, there is something marvelously baroque and mysterious about the plot (even if it doesn't always pull together, and ultimately seems a tad rushed and forced, particularly in Chapter 4) and it largely lets you figure out what is going on through organic play.

-gameplay- This will be both a negative and a positive; while it is largely an enjoyable exploration of a twisted, dark world, some of the "gunplay" doesn't work as smoothly as it should and does get a bit cumbersome from time to time. It's much more successful as a walking simulator than a first person shooter (although that aspect isn't "bad" per se, just a little unrefined and even a bit repetitive).

-sound design/music- Perfectly suited to a game of this nature, and there is only one thing that really didn't mesh with Inner Chains, which is the narrator (see below).

Negatives

-voice acting- There is only one voice and that is the narrator, and damn, is he not all that great at reading his lines (at least in heavily, HEAVILY accented English), although with the somewhat ponderous and pseudo-portentous dialogue, a non-speaker is already against the 8 ball. Thankfully, this immersion breaking narration only appears at chapter beginning/endings.

-gameplay- It was mostly a positive, but there are some caveats; first and foremost, there is very limited variety for enemy types. This didn't bother me much, because the game is short enough that the limited enemy palette was of no concern compared to the awesome aesthetics of the game's environments. Second, the final, fourth chapter is way too long and convoluted compared to the other chapters, to the extent that it almost stopped feeling fun. Thirdly, the final boss encounter, while memorable in many ways, also felt quite anticlimactic and didn't live up to the build up that proceeded it (and the less said about the actual ending, once you beat the boss, the better......it's like they ran out of money or enthusiasm, or possibly both).

So, there are some down sides, and unfortunately they occur in the final stretches of the game so they are more likely to leave a bad taste in your mouth. However, all-in-all, I found the game far more enjoyable than not, and it is completely worth a buy (only when it's on sale, mind you; with the downsides not to mention its length, it is certainly not worth $20) for the artistic look and atmosphere of the game alone.

Utter trash. Poorly optimized. Boring, slow gameplay. Not even worth the 4 bucks I bought this in the sale for.

It's taken me a while to come back to this game and bother to finish it. I didn't want to write a review until I had completed the game.

I followed this game from when it was first announced. Initially, I thought we were going to get a faster-paced atmospheric horror-FPS. However from getting the first weapon, I realised that wasn't what this game was to be at all.

This game is basically a walking simulator with a few obstacles along the way. The chap doing the voice acting clearly struggles to perform in his second language. Apart from him, the environments and art style are really appealing.... unfortunately the gameplay just isn't on-par.

I feel that Inner Chains is the result of plenty of assets being created for a great game concept... however that game got cancelled and so this beta-tier game was cobbled together with the pieces they had.

Slow, dull, ultimately a journey you just want to finish to say you've given it a chance. But alas, I think this game is symbolic of potential that will never be realised.

After a mesmerizing first chapter full of screenshot opportunities, the game settles into a fairly unspectacular shooter that wins enough points with it's atmosphere to keep it in my recommended category.

Petr Stránský

The game looks great. The environment design is amazing, directly inspired by the paintings of Zdzisław Beksiński, especially the first chapter. It looked really promising. But soon you realise the rest of the game is much worse.

It's an FPS and a bad one. Weapons feel weak and ineffective, enemies are bullet sponges and it's not satisfying to shoot them. You move slowly, there's no dodging or covers; whenever you see an enemy you just point a gun at it and hope for the best. The combat is extremely tedious and boring and that's a huge problem because there's nothing else to do. You just walk, shoot and pick up ammo.

Story makes barely any sense and during the first playthrough you can't even understand it because you need to decrypt the alphabet and then play again. Voice acting is downright horrible. Music is almost nonexistent.

Also, quitting the game in the middle of a chapter made me start over from the chapter beginning. This not a small problem because chapters take 1-2 hours to complete.

It took me 6 hours to complete the game and felt like eternity. What a waste of potential. Just enjoy the screenshots and ignore the game.

I cannot reccomend this game. I hoped so much, that it will become a very special game, but mainly it's a walking simulator in an always the same looking world. Ok, the setting is nice. I looks like a mixing of Hellraiser and the Mortal Kombat movie.

But only 3 weapons, less than 10 enemy types, several bugs (that forced me to reload), hose-like maps, running only slowly (and just for a few seconds) and a very dull story.

No, I definetly will not play it again.

I also loved how the game immersed and treated the player. Absolutely brilliant!

So most of the negetive reviews have 2 mainpoints 1. it's slow and boring gameplay and 2. the bugs.

I think both points are valid but if you buy this game with the right expectations at least the 1. point can be negleted.
So keep in mind this is a rather small game i finisched it in araund 5h and i will most likly never play it again but in my opinion the gameplay was ok and it never felt too boring exept maybe the last boss fight, witch was a little undervelming.
BUT if you expect a horror schooter like doom you will get dissapointed because it is nothing like it. Its more like a first person exploration/adventur game that points with its great astetics and athmosphere rather than action.

In terms of bugs I encounterd 3 in my playthrough 2 forced me to relode/die.

So if you dont look for somthing like this dont get it but otherwis for 5 or 10 buks its fine.

Otherwise you can always get Singularity instead ;)

As a whole if you like using interesting guns in a unique immersive dark world and can bear with mediocre combat and unfulfilling story, there is joy to be found in the game.

privettk

The first 20 minutes or so are fascinating - your imagination goes crazy trying to piece together this interesting universe and admiring the scope of things around you. Then you go inside to a never-ending maze of hallways that look the same - and without any central point of internal or external reference it's tough to tell where you're going or why. There's plenty of text in the game but it's all in another language that you slowly unlock, meaning it's unreadable until the end, and that's assuming you find all the letters.

If you like going through a game and coming up with your own imaginative story around what's happening, this is probably for you. If you expected the game to give it to you in an understandable way, this isn't for you.

The combat is clunky to say the least, there's no characters good or bad to relate to...super bummed as I had hope for this one to sate my waiting for Scorn.

FoxTailBlue

Dark atmosphere where you follow a path while surviving in a hostile environment, as you progress you learn the letters of a unknown language do discover the games true meaning. Slow combat with the use of traps, not many options to choose from so either you run through a area and fight everything at once or take it one at a time. Good visuals but the combat is a bit of a let down.

Horizon Flux
Horizon Flux

This games trailer is very misleading. It gives the narrative of a good story, however, the lack of dialogue (except for narration) makes the game not immersive. The combat is also very easy and does not pose a challenge. The AI are awful, especially in combat situations. Overall, I would not recommend this game to others.

You travel through a hell and Gieger (maybe) inspired caves and castles avoiding lians with claws, turrets, monsters grabbing you form the ceiling (say hi to HL) and killing few types of enemies with 3 types of weapon. Constant fps drops from 60 to 45 or even 15-20 makes aiming and shooting a pain. Feels like some slightly more polished than others Unity project. Game looked promising but I don't even want to finish it anymore (((

Overall a very short game. First play through only last ~3 hr. with breaks. Got all but one achievements. might go back through and find the last one at a later date. Over all it is a walking sim with bad AI and FPS mechanics. I loved the art style of the game. Would lag randomly for seemingly no reason. If this goes on sale and you have nothing else to play go for it.

Go straight to the point!
Dear Gamers!
DO NOT BE ABOUT BEAUTIFUL DECORATION AND UNIQUE DESIGN!
The first problem and the most important one is the game is crashed or not finished.
Bug after bug at each location and at each level.
Powerful PC does not solve the problem .. And I have a very powerful computer.
Mouse sensitivity settings are completely missing.
SETTINGS IS MISSED CARL!!!
Soryan for being rude, but THIS IS COMPLETE CRAP FOR A GAME FOR 20 EURO! (Although I took it at a discount, I specially waited for the moment!)
This game at this stage I DO NOT RECOMMEND STRONGLY!
Do not waste your nerves and money, and most importantly, trying to reach out to developers on it ... they don’t respond at all because the developer's site is completely absent. Instead of webpage is F***ING Alladin ... ARE YOU SERIOUS?
I don’t know what the developer was thinking, but this is a raw product.
It should be free in this form.
Verdict 2/10.

STEPAN1983
STEPAN1983

Cool visuals and atmosphere, but everything else is boring AF. The gameplay is mediocre shooter with slow movement and primitive weapon-based puzzle system (shoot with specific weapon specific switch to open the door). Everything is glitchy. The story is just hillarious, its like a badly written black metal song with mumbling about "death" and "suffering" with poorly made voiceacting in heavy eastern-european accent. I got through like a half of the game and I just cant play it anymore.

Alright, so given the credits look like they are small enough to fit on a half a sheet of standard printer paper, what we get here isn't terrible. What we do get however is a slowly paced trudge through a heavy nod to Zdzisław Beksiński's art. After a 2 minute intro that had narration that felt more philosophical than illuminating, the player is thrown into a world where you basically just follow a path through the artistic environment and are pointed along by mumbling guards occasionally. Lore is shaky and the choice to reveal it by murals which the player eventually unlocks the lexicon to translate letter-by-letter is an odd one. While being no stranger to games that throw you into it, or ones where you got to figure out the world (think PC games of the 90s and early 2000s) I just struggled to remain engaged with this game. Only worth it if heavily marked down unfortunately.

Half-Life biomechanics.
It's a stylised shooter, containing mazelike environments that eventually lead you out where you need to be.

Aside from shooting, there's an emphasis on exploration in the action of collecting alphabet.
This will allow you to read lore tablets scattered around the environment. These tablets and the letters themselves are duplicate to find. They're very light on lore as is the story. I, for one, couldn't tell you coherently what transpired during my playthrough. It seems like you get condemned for breaking a rule, that wasn't of your own accord, so you end up taking down the system at your last stand. This post is a much better alternative to interpret.

You get 3 weapons; tesla, flamer and a nail gun. Eventually finding an alternate fire upgrade, which is some kind of AOE burst. Those are satisfactory.
Deadly fauna as well as your enemy variants will be more susceptible to certain weapon.
The enemy and level/story pacing design scream half-life to me.

Performance will dip at times but it's nothing major. Particularly the starting area is the worst it was for me.

Once you embrace the initial jank complete experience jank it could be good. Overall I fuchs with it.
Chances are if you enjoy a game like Agony, you might like this. It's not as good tbh

*Turn off the music, there's only one horrible combat track in there that doesn't fit in with the atmosphere at all. It will play every time you shoot at something and it dies.

The very definition of style over substance, Inner Chains is a beautiful and imaginative-looking game that's unbelievably boring to play. What should have been an atmospheric walking simulator quickly becomes an irritating survival shooter. This game had potential, but unfortunately I can't recommend it.

SweepingsDemon
SweepingsDemon

It's rough, but I think I'm going to recommend it. It's a first person shooter with strong horror roots. It's slow and clunky, and confrontations are usually solved by using specific weapons or using environmental factors. This, and the environments, elevate the game. Many arenas have different elements placed around them like bug nests, gas sacs or plants that interact with the enemies and can be used to drastically increase your effectiveness. For example, if you shoot a gas sac it will drop to the floor and burst, and you can ignite the gas with the flamethrower for a sizable explosion. It's not revolutionary, but the developers put a lot of effort into making the arenas easy to approach with this puzzle-like approach, and I really respect that.

However, the gameplay is rough. You won't get lost due to the constant presence of little clue machines, checkpoints, and plants that guide you, but the fact that they had to add those plants I think indicates how absurd the level design can get. There are lots of winding paths. Lots. The shooting and movement are also very slow and imprecise. For a sizable chunk of the game you'll only have the electric gun (which is awful) and a melee, which makes it feel even worse. I don't think most players get past that section. It does get better as you unlock secondary attacks and more weapons, but it will always feel slow. The voice acting isn't great, and the plot is... fine? A little arcane and not presented directly to you, but it's at least interesting conceptually.

I can't say I've ever played a shooter like it, and it's beautiful, so I'm recommending it. But make sure you know what you're getting into; this is a very niche title that's lacking in polish.

I had been wanting to check out this game for years after seeing trailers of it. Finally got a rig and was able to check it out. While visually and aesthetically the game looks great. Game play wise there isn't a lot going on. Most of the game consists of you walking around and looking for letters to decipher the writing on paintings you'll find. Even then, this is a completely optional step. You could get through it without doing this.

Which leads into the core game play. There are a few weapons you can use and some puzzles to solve. I wish the game had more enemy types. There's only a handful of them and at the end of the game, which it is a short one too. I got tired of seeing the same enemies over and over again. Another thing, is they give you the weapon upgrades in the final chapter. So you don't have much of an opportunity to use them before the game ends. I wish it would have been a bit longer as well due to that.

If you're looking to kill some time and look at some neat visuals and some cool concepts, like the guns, etc. I'd say give it a go. If you're looking for anything deeper than that. Don't bother.

Pros: Cool visuals, Cool weapon designs (despite only 3 weapons), interesting concepts of the world, etc.

Cons: Repetitive play style due to lack of variety, repetitive narration, not a lot of enemy variants, too short.

TheBeak

Despite the thumbs down rating, I don't hate Inner Chains. Somewhere within this game there's a decent Doom/Quake sort of shooter trying to score a frag inside the f-ed up Giger art graphics' canvas that Scorn seems to be aiming for (wherever you are Scorn!), yet it falls flat so often I'd 100 percent recommend not paying full-price for it even if the visual stills and videos get your inner Pinhead intrigued.

So you're in some kind of crazed flesh-y, gooey world full of demons, danger, a possible enslaved tribe/population and general madness. The story makes not one damn lick of sense. That sentence that starts this paragraph is the best I can do. Nobody has any dialogue, there's a bunch of weird sh*t going on, some demon race seems to be killing some other tribe, yeah, sure.

You traverse several distinct regions getting gun upgrades that double as level progression devices (fire, ice, etc.) and recharge said gun at ammo recharge stations that attach to your weapon in a suggestive way like David Cronenberg directed this joint. The combat at times borderlines on fun as does the exploration and other times just makes me want to kick myself. Even on a PC that could handle the task, there were times of chug and slow down. There are no objectives but going forward and taking on the monsters in combat with 4 different gun types that can be leveled up several times for more stopping power is what you are doing. It feels straight out of the 90s with a shiny paintjob. You can look for letter tiles along the way that you press in on pressure plates as an achievement that has no context other than you're pressing letter plates. Yep (and I went out of my way to find as many as I could like an idiot).

As weird and nonsensical and terrible as this all sounds, the environments have something cool about their design (I wanted to see what the next area would look like) and upgrading the gun to see it handle different combat situations, um, differently did have an odd attraction to it. When the FPS stayed strong I actually had enough fun to see Inner Chains through to the end but there's no way on God's green Earth would I complete this a second time or recommend it to you and lose a future possible friend over the ordeal.

5/10 if I had to # Inner Chains.

I feel bad for putting a negative review on this, this is kind of a meme, a failed kickstarter project that went into the abyss.

The art design is pretty cool but the performance is abysmal, Chapter 4 has pretty cool level design though.
However some things can't be forgiven, for example, the sprint stamina limit. This is a game design choice and a bad one, you can't sprint more than 5 seconds and by sprinting I meant walking faster.
Also the music is very clearly placeholder stuff, better not have music in this case and just let the sound design do the job, especially since it's pretty cool, except the horrible raw voice recordings lol.

Honestly I would have put a positive on this just for the meme and to give an incentive to people to try this anomaly of a project, but the horrible performance and the bad design choices are a no go.

Inner Chains is a glorified walking simulator. This is one of the worst games I've played in my entire life. There are frame drops on every graphical setting because the f*ckfaces who made this game doesn't know anything about optimizing a game. Combat is bland and uninteresting. Also who's the c*ckface that thought weapons should charge and player have to wait after firing. It turns boring combat into a janky mess. There are environmental traps everywhere. You can't take a single step without getting attacked by those f*cking tentacle machines. I think developers should shove those machines up their as*. Story is dogsh*t. Just some exposition at the beginning of the game then nothing. I think these losers trying to be mysterious but failed in that aspect. Actually, this game fails in every aspect other than unique environments. The environment is good, and that's only good thing in the game. But when the gameplay is jacksh*t, I don't give a single f*ck about the environment. Also, last boss is a f*cking joke! At least, this garbage game is short. You can finish it under 4 hours. It seems that bunch of losers looked at some HR Giger art on Google images and tried to make a videogame without knowing a single thing about making a good videogame. Leave the industry you morons, go do something else.

I enjoyed the game so far. The game has no "training level" and few cut-scenes, which is great if you have a low attention span. Engages the brain a bit more. Also there are no "Tap E repeatedly to win the movie" gameplay mechanics, which is good if you are more of a 90's game fan.

OVTSIDER

This is what happens when you put too much effort in the graphics (and the lore at the very least) and playing with ideas without really applying them.

It looks great, but everything else is either bad or mediocre :
- Gameplay would be better if my character wasn't so painfully sloooow, sprinting is also useless as it only last a couple of seconds, jumping is useless aswell as you loose health from a tiny ledge. And I just don't know what this game WANTS to be : you have this dope weapons made out of some weird flesh technology and are mostly fun to use, in the other hand, you just meet the same stupid enemies, traps and you have just weirdly placed checkpoints, you progress at such a slow pace that you can easily get bored . It's just not fun when you don't know if you're playing an action OR a survival horror game, some games manage to do both, and there's Inner Chains.
Oh yeah, and having to collect LETTERS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT'S WRITTEN ON SOME STUPID BOARDS ????! It's a f*cking poor excuse to boost the length and hum, replayability, this alone to fully get the story deserve the thumb down.

- I think it was just too ambitious for it's own good : The universe is awesome, I love some dark mysterious alien-ish forsaken lands to explore, BUT I CAN'T as the level design is dated, you just go through enemies, traps and doors to open, through hidden, narrow corridors and jail cells and urg, another room made of stone with these damned plants that I have to burn down, I FEEL LIKE RUNNING IN CIRCLES, but thank f*ck there are some wierd plants that release some spores that show me where to head next.

- The sound design is okay, but the best thing is probably the narrator, this man's is really into it and helps getting into the game.

- The graphics are indeed very good and thankfully that's the best part about this game, hell, the game even has the cojones to hide the HUD, the quantity of ammos are shown on your weapon and health on your bracelet, it helps getting immersed. The game has some glitches here and there, and some stuttering on my good hardware, which I can forgive, but it's still optimized like crap as it easily makes my PC sound like a plane compared to newer and technically more demanding games. And don't get me started on the animations, the less "zombified" enemies moving like constipated crabs is just hilarious.

All in all, it's not so baaaaad, it just tried to do something new, without the proper funding or trying harder.
Pick it up on sale if you're really, reaaaally curious, it's not worth 20 bucks, and never was it seems.
Play it for the story and the cool sceneries so you have nice screenshots, but don't expect to be entertained.

Indie, even solo developpers making boomer shooters (mods and full games) is where you should spend your money.

The game is plagued with technical problems (e.g., poor performance and sound glitches). Also, the gameplay is simply not very interesting, and it only takes about 2-4 hours to finish. All that being said, if you can get it on a deep discount, I think the art design is unique enough to warrant a quick playthrough.

If you are looking for a fast action run and gun shooter this might not be for you. If you are looking for a game dripping with atmosphere and nightmare this game might be for you. The experience is like walking through a painting by the late Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński. It is stunning to look at. Pure artistry. There is combat and some puzzles but this game is a different kettle of fish from the average FPS and one that I am totally enjoying.
It's a slow moving game, but I like that, it gives me time to look at the environments, which as I said are something out of a nightmare.
I think the game is worth full price, if you by on sale you are getting one hell of a deal.
The art director did an amazing job in particular.
If you can still muster a non-jaded sense of wonder... play this. If you can appreciate fantastic visual world building...play this.
If your idea of an FPS starts and stops with Halo, C.o.D. or Battlefield...well, best you just chug another Mountain Dew and wait to get tea-bagged by a foul mouthed 12 year old. I'm not saying those are bad games, Well, Halo isn't anyway, but they are a small sliver of what is possible with the genre.
I am so glad I took a chance and bought this.
This is gaming as a visual art-form.

My two complaints are that the combat music gets really repetitive and the direction of sounds in the game, particularly the enemies seems a bit off. I mean that sometimes an enemy will sound like it's in another location than were it actually is, particularly when killed. You kill something in front of you and the death sound comes from behind you. Neither of these are a deal breaker though.
Aside from that...Creepy goodness!

Highly recommend to people with the right mindset...and artists. Artists should play this.

Game looks ok till 3 seconds in you realise there is no way to adjust mouse speed. So after you throw up from motion sickness a few times you kinda get used to it.
Don't die or you have to start from scratch as there is no game saves.
Takes way too long to acquire a weapon and when you do finally find one its a crap electric thing that runs out all the time.
It's not terribly effective either.

Atrocious combat (which there's a lot of), braindead AI, terrible voice acting if you can even call it that, dull sound design (music and sfx) and really annoying trap filled levels. The standard movement speed is pretty slow and the character can't run for more than a couple seconds without running out of stamina. The art is kinda interesting to look at with how detailed it is but that was tempered by the aging graphics, e.g. the low res textures and simplistic lighting. The art style may have been pulled off well but the drabness gets repetitive fast.

At 4 bucks on sale, I still feel like it was a waste of money and time.

All right if you want to get this game working put it into border mode and it will optimize itself to your monitor. I don't know if that's a curse or a blessing for you but my review for this game is pretty steep, the first time I played this game I was enjoying myself but I've beaten the game once already and I'm going back through it to get the last of the achievements and as I was doing it for a second time. I physically hate this game, I don't ever say that about video games but I actually hate this one with how lazily put together it has been made from the weapons to the animations to the character models to the world in general, I honestly despise this game to the depths of my soul. I've beaten Immortal Unchained as well as many other pseudo indie games.. but I have not experienced the level of frustration and I'm Immortal Unchained as I've had in this one. If you want to talk about linearity this game is like a tricycle of linearity. If you want to talk about convoluted storytelling when your story makes less sense than Dark Souls do you have a problem, the animations aren't even finished the game barely functions as a game. This game is not even worth in my opinion five bucks it's not even worth $0.05 it's shovelware. The company that made this shame on you guys this is trash. Again I'm not usually this hard-on games that I don't like but I have an experienced this level of hatred towards a game in a long long time it's like I can sense the laziness every moment I play. I would rather play remothered a game that I've mastered which is also pretty glitchy. Then this game it is just terrible
