I have no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes but I can say at 16 hours I recommend it to fans of card battlers like Magic:The Gathering and so on. Go in blind.

Great game. A simple card rogue-like game. It is easy to learn and fun to play. Although I wish some game modes that could be played briefly during what can be considered as "story-mode", would be available on their own. But I like it either way.

imagine if someone developed like 4 robust and well-thought out card game systems and then put them together in a video game with some of the best art design ive seen and it also managed to have one of the most gripping stories ive experienced in a while.

Ended up completing the game, realising it's 5am and I've not even gotten up for nourishment. This game sucks your life

What a roller coaster this game is. I dont want to spoil anything because it is a single player adventure. You feel all sorts of emotions while playing this game.

I put this 3rd on my list of card games that you should play. Slay the Spire, Monster Train, Inscryption.

Like others have said, the advertisement is misleading. I saw a few LPs of people giving the game a shot, the visuals looked great and the deck building seemed interesting, so I decided to try it out. It's the spooky month so what better way to spend it than a spooky game?

Slog, exhausting, irritating, unfair. The game wants a story to happen as you progress so it does require you to lose at certain points in order to restart. Fine. Even after losing so many times that new dialogue stopped appearing I still found myself getting hands that felt impossible to win with. Even looking up guides or helpful comments barely did anything.

"Try the cockroach strat!" I would if the game let me get a cockroach card.
"Try the undying squirrel strat!" I would if the game would let me get the right sigil (cockroachless).
"Focus on single sacrifice cards!" I did, a 1-3 stoat loses to a 2-4 elk every time. Trust me, I checked.
"Make sure to power up your cards with sigils!" I do and then they go to the bottom of my deck.
"Solve the painting puzzle, it gives good upgrades!" Great, all I need is a goat (goatless).

The idea of failing and starting over, this time with more power, is totally fine. The issue is that you never feel like you get more powerful. Your cards remain weak, and the cards you power up remain trapped at the bottom of the deck. Even when you do get those moments of success and build up a solid deck the game will suddenly decide to play a 4-7 moose alongside a few 2-4 elks enhanced with flying on the first turn while you're stuck being dealt all the cards you didn't upgrade because the cards you did upgrade have a phobia of actually being played.

Eventually one of my successful playthroughs gave me the ability to draw any card I wanted from my deck. Lucky for me I had a death card with zero costs, seven damage, seven health, tri-attack sigil, that I lovingly named 'Fuck' who I was now able to summon at will and steamroll all the flying moose and elks I wanted.

My reward was an 8-bit whiplash of a second act, tagging along like an unwanted little sibling during your one night out with friends. It was a complete waste of a weekend, the most joy I got out of this game was hitting the refund button.

Been waiting a year to play this game, and it exceeded the hype. Retroactively beats out Metroid Dread and Death’s Door for my 2021 GOTY. Visuals, music (bought the soundtrack on Bamdcamp, can get as low as $4), story, and sheer inventiveness, the game is astonishing.

Inscryption is a very special game, that I will not elaborate much on why. You must experience it for yourself.

Now I think every act of this game is incredible, though I will say I thought act 2 was a dip down for a bit.

Inscryption is a card game with an interesting narrative that will unfold as you progress. It quite fun, and reminds me of some of those battle type card games. The trailers hint at it a bit but it has a bit of a meta narrative, and its journey through it is not like how any other game has really done it. Its about 15 hours long, and things get wacky.

9.7/10 - I will remember Inscryption

Absolutely wonderful game. So much fun, infinitely replayable. Very cool aesthetics. I'm not usually into card-based videogames but this is so much more than that. The opportunities for creativity & figuring out new strategies are endless. I just finished the last of the official challenges at 241 hours in, and I can't recommend it enough. This game feels like a piece of underground art. I love it.

I absolutely love this game, It left no emotional impact so I can't say top 3 favs, but the game itself is so fun, the story is interesting to piece together. The very first game is so much fun, the others are too, but weird. All in all, I would 100% recommend this game. You'll quickly learn you are meant to win easily, to move on the rest of the game. Like I said, parts 2 and 3 were weird, but still really good!

It's hard to describe Inscryption without giving away too much. It's a mystery game with light puzzle elements that revolve around a deck building / card game. There is a sense of evolution as you progress and discover how you came to be playing this game in a secluded cabin. (If you want to increase the creepy factor, play alone in a rural cabin surrounded by trees at night)

Inscryption is an experience defined by a hidden story going on in the background, similar to previous Daniel Mullins games, and yet the rogue-like card games are incredibly well-designed and fun on their own anyways.

I highly recommend a buy and to be patient with the opening hours.

It’s a joke amongst friends that I have pretty severe gaming ADHD. I own a lot of games, and I’ve not finished many of them besides Roguelikes.

At first, this game looked like just another Slay the Spire clone, and boy was I wrong.

Inscryption, despite the short run time, is one of the most immersive, cerebral games I’ve ever played and I’m already dying to start it back up again.

I loved every act more than the last, and I’m pretty sad that it’s over.

I am in love with this game!
So much so that it is the first game that I got 100% achievements in.
The story and gameplay go hand in hand to make what I can only describe as an unforgettable experience.
If your a fan of strategy games then this is a must have.
The characters have so much charm written into them, so much so its difficult to pick a favorite from the cast.
I cant put into words how much fun I had playing this, so my final remarks will be "Give yourself the chance to fall in love with this incredible game"

I was hesitant with how many reviews said avoid spoilers, just buy it. Well, I did, and was pleasantly surprised, although it seemed a bit weird, and a bit short -- just kind of dropped you in and ...

Oh and then that *wasn't* the end. Then there was a lot more, after I'd already thought it was 100% worth it. I'll second the wishes of some other people and wish I could erase it from my mind so I could experience it again for the first time.

I was very curious about this game, I watched one video of someone else playing it and it peaked my interest. Usually I'm not interested in card games, but I love the mechanics of this one. The story was wild and surprising. A little confusing at times, and parts of it really pulled you out of the immersion in my opinion. Switching between 3d graphics and then 8 bit was very strange. I'm not a huge fan of 8 bit, so I'm slightly biased. Either way, I really enjoyed it and would recommend!

Great game! A lot bigger than it first appears.

Minor game mechanic spoilers

Act 1 was almost worth the price tag for me. I loved the weirdness of act 1. And the card game was a lot of fun. The art style, and sound design were great. Then came act 2. I've never dropped a game so fast. I hated the art style, the art direction, and the card mechanics. Usually when a game wins as many awards as this one did, I can see why even if I have a different experience. This one baffles me.

I got a solid 9 hours on act one. And if the game ended there, It would have been a positive experience. But instead, the game became something else, and it was such a slog to play that I walked away with a negative experience.

If I hadn't gone over the 2 hour mark, I would probably refund this game.

This might hit certain marks for people that like this style of game, but I think it's trying to be too many things at the same time. FNAF/RogueLike/CardGame. In the end, neither of these things is accomplished particularly well, and although I do like the art style, I can tell it was chosen to cover up the lack of professional grade graphics.

For someone looking to add a story-line to their card game, this might be for you. Otherwise, I would stick with a game that masters one theme, instead of doing 3 different themes just ok.

Spoiler Free Review:

Inscription is a roguelike deck builder similar to Slay the Spire, but with some quirky mechanics thrown in such as standing up from the game board to walk around and trigger effects. The core card mechanic is a bit like Yu-Gi-Oh in that there are limited board slots for creatures, and you need to play small creatures for free to sacrifice them and play larger ones. This can be a bit frustrating at first since the AI never has to sacrifice anything, yet the game is presented as a duel between player vs game master. The overall game presentation gets pretty edgy at times, with the focus on killing/sacrificing creatures and the "if you die in the card game, you die in real life" story hook. However, none of these complaints take away from the experience, and I think the game is overall a very solid purchase.

There are a few negative reviews of the game that used to be on point with their complaints, but those reviews are completely obsolete with the launch of an official free add-on called Kaycee's Mod. It's styled as a mod for in-game presentation purposes, but it's an official expansion. Either way, it removes any hesitation I may have had about recommending this game.

MASSIVE SPOILERS:

The main issues with the game come from the 2nd/3rd act plot twists. After your first win, it's revealed that you're playing a "real-world" guy who is playing this game he found an Inscryption floppy disk buried in the woods. After you complete a few objectives and beat the boss a couple of times, the game pivots into a semi-open world Pokémon style dueling game where you make your whole deck beforehand and get random cards for winning duels. The card game uses some of the same mechanics, but the gameplay is significantly less fun than act 1. On my first playthrough, I soft locked in this section because the random cards I won were trash. After act 2, there is another pivot into a sci-fi adventure card game using similar yet different mechanics, and a healthy dose of edgy presentation that frankly doesn't make a lot of sense in context. For example, you are asked to root around in your computer files to create cards, and the files will be "deleted" if you lose the card. But if we are supposed to be playing some other guy, shouldn't it be his files we are searching through?

The issue with all of this is that the gameplay is just straight up worse than what you started out with, and the story takes a nose dive into edge-town with characters that talk about "the OLD_DATA" and multiple fourth wall breaks, and a mystery about where this game even came from. This all culminates in a terrible final act where you play the game while it's being deleted which basically amounts to "click the button to advance the story" and then your "real-world" protagonist gets murdered. Its somewhat interesting, but I found myself just wanting to go back and play the original game the whole time. I would struggle to recommend this version of the game at full price, since it definitely isn't what I paid for.

Luckily, the devs added Kaycee's Mod, which removes everything else and fleshes out the act 1 roguelike deckbuilder. They even keep in some of the more interesting bits about the backstory in the form of "dev logs" that you unlock along the way.

In summary, while I may have reservations about the main game, Kaycee's mod makes sure that everyone gets what they paid for.

Slickity Scrungus The Great
Slickity Scrun…

Can't talk about much without spoiling but its essentially a roguelike card game with a focus on the story. The game will completely turn the tables on you just when it gets starting to get old meaning there is never a dull moment. Fun gameplay focused on critical thinking and puzzle-solving skills. The found footage sorta tone is great and the game has on e of the best soundtracks I have ever heard, beaten old by the Doom series. 10/10 must play.

This is truly an outstanding game. The storyline is the best part, and is incredibly well made and thought out. I recommend playing without any prior knowledge of the game, so I suggest not looking anything up unless absolutely necesarry if you get stuck. Playing the game with complete knowledge of the entire game doesn't make it loose its appeal, however, as the gameplay itself is is really well done. Kaycee's mod is a mod that allows for "infinite" play without as many restrictions and story bits for the player to deal with if they were simply replaying the game from the start. I highly recommend it once you finish the game's story, but always start there first. This game has earned a special place in my heart as one of the best games I've ever played

The card game that makes up Inscryption's main game loop is a LOT of fun. Like, I would buy a physical copy of it and make all my friends play it, too. Apparently there was some sort of ARG around this game, which, in my opinion, you shouldn't look into because it makes the game's story actively worse by tying it into other Daniel Mullins games. Inscryption stands on its own, and it rules.

Darbus
Darbus

The game continually surprises you each time you think that the credits are about to roll. It's a deck builder, and then an escape the room, and then a pokemon-esque situation and another part that I'm not even going to say anything about. Don't sleep on this game.

I beat this a month or so ago but I can't stop thinking about it. Amazing deck-builder, amazing story, and a really inventive format/narrative. It's really, earnestly original. And fun! The integration of escape-room mechanics, horror-survival, all with Rogue-like elements and deck building is also awesome. I like all of these kind of games, but they're often hard to get right. Inscryption nailed all of them. I think it's a must-buy.

Augy

Story mode was pretty fun, although certain story elements were pretty jarring and ruined the immersion. Overall I would recommend this game even to people who don't normally like card games, as it's very approachable and has fun mechanics that keep the gameplay fresh.

SPOILERS
----------
Challenge mode/Kaycee's Mod is significantly less fun for me, since unwinnable situations are pretty frequent. If there was a game mode that combined the free-form deckbuilding of Act II with the gameplay and aesthetic of Act I (minus random card pickups), I would rate Kaycee's Mod significantly higher. I could also accept just being able to refuse cards (pelts, random pickups, etc.), or being able to thin the deck on demand. I understand that this style of gameplay would completely defeat the point of several Inscryption mechanics, but I have come to realize over the past several hours of gameplay that Inscryption's level of RNG is more frustrating than fun for me.

Blazium

The best part of Inscryption is you get to beat the game, go "that was fun" and then the game starts.

My only complaint is that there wasn't more added to it to extend the experience, and there were some very cool ideas showed in the game that only lasted for one or 2 sections. Wished they stayed just a bit longer.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I enjoyed the first Act of the game the most (this is the part seen in trailers). The music, the atmosphere, the way the player interacts with the environment beyond the card table for the first time.... it's just magical. While I did enjoy the other Acts, Act 1 was the only time where I felt entirely immersed in the world of Inscryption - something I think the creators agreed with, considering the existence of Kaycee's mod.

I think the devs have created the best card game ruleset I've ever seen, and I love this game for introducing me to it. It probably wouldn't work competitively, of course, but that's not really the point.

Inscryption is a narrative, gameplay and auditory masterpiece, and I urge anyone even marginally interested in card games, immersion or stories to give this game a try. It's a thing of beauty.

kaycee's mod though suffers from "forced losses" which mainly happen in totem battles.

Once again the developer has made another misdirecting mind fuck of a game, and it's absolutely ruined if you go into it knowing ANYTHING about it. The less you know ahead of time, the better the experience of the story will be, especially the first time you get out of the 'cabin'.

Kudos to the Daniel Mullins for adding Kaycee's Mod - a roguelike mode based on the game's first act post-development as well, adds replayability the game was lacking initially and fleshes out what's generally regarded as the best part of the game mechanically and aesthetically.

man i got less than 2 hours in but the card mechanics seem incredibly slow. One card per turn, many creatures with basic statlines (3/2 or 1/6) require two squirrels to play (two turns of drawing squirrel and passing). Why is everything so expensive? They should have opened me up earlier to cheaper creatures and made the bones mechanic part of the initial deck. Gameplay wise this whole thing feels off.

jonboy

I'm sorry, what? Overwhelmingly positive??
the encounters are often ended not due to a bad choice or anything, but sheer randomness.
Compared to Slay the Spire this one needs a couple rounds of polishing.
The sound design is horrible and if not turned down a lot, actually hurts your ears when headphones are on.
The pacing of the scene transitions is so slow and has 0 suspense.
You can label anything indie these days and i gets a much higher rating than it deserves...

Well no shit sherlock those blue words up there say Overwhelmingly positive so just hurry up and buy the damn card game.

This game pretends to tamper with your computer's actual files and you can't get a specific achievement unless you actually manually delete a file you've marked in game as sacrificial. I don't enjoy my actual computer space even jokingly being threatened or held hostage. This was not fun and took me completely out of the cool card + escape room experience. Which really sucks cause I was otherwise enjoying this game and completely blown away by a lot of the twists it continued to present and would have liked to recommend this to more people.

The card game part of Inscryption is alright, but the real appeal behind this game is how completely insane and unexpected everything else is. It's the kind of game that loses a lot of it's value if it gets spoiled, so go into it completely blind, and don't look anything up when playing.

I'm not a Card Games player, i never liked those types of games, so going in i was skeptical as to wether this was gonna be worth my money. Well....IT IS!! Oh my gosh is it worth buying!! Not only does it grab you with its mysterious and horrific atmosphere but as you play the gameplay and strategy comes to you fairly quickly, so dont worry about it getting too difficult. Its literally the perfect game for someone wanting to relax, use their brain, and get scared at the same time. Its a must buy for anyone looking for a great card game or Horror game.

Oh. My. God. This is, no doubt, another great game from the makers of Pony Island and The Hex. These fellas do NOT miss! 66 hours wasted (in a good way ;P) on this piece of art, I've replayed it like ten times over to get what I've missed. I ADORE the gameplay and story. Wish there will be much more content in the future.

One thing though, I wish they continued with what the demo had. More horror, less plot? It took me a while to get used to the sudden switch, but I guess that was the point of it - to catch the player off guard?

Oh Inscryption, too many good things to say about this unique horror-esque game. First of all, this game's biggest pro is its unique and stylistic gameplay. I guarantee you will not a play game that has a constantly shifting mechanic yet still keeps its core ideals. The gameplay is arbitrary but refreshing as it puts a twist on the classic battle-style card game (such as pokemon, yu-gi-oh, and Magic) while including new mechanics that give the game its 'Breath of fresh air" one mechanic I would like to note is the "scale" mechanic. in order to win a battle not only do you need to do damage to the enemy but you have to overwhelm the enemy's damage with your own by tipping the scale in your favor. Another mechanic I love is the Sigils. certain creatures you attain during your journey will have certain abilities whether it's attacking the sides or evolving after a turn, these sigils bring a common concept and it flips it on its head by making sacrifice these animals to put it on others. this mechanic can create some powerful combos that can easily make this game fun for anyone.

Another aspect I love about this game is the atmosphere. The feeling of claustrophobia and uneasiness as you are stuck in a cabin forced to play this cruel game of kill or be killed while the solemn and melancholic track called "Deathcard Cabin" paints a picture of hopelessness as you the character playing the old man's game. it is simple yet unique in its sounds and plucks of the strings on what sounds like a slightly off-tune guitar of sorts. The game uses a lot of orange in the game which gives the room a closed-in feeling.

Minor spoiler alerts for the plot down below so don't recommend to continue reading but please just play the game. overall this game refreshing with an outstanding plot and brilliant mechanics and I would give it a 9.3/10 only because its difficulty is not high and it is rather short compared to other games but I think this game is for anybody.

Finally the plot. In games, the plot of the game is a make or break for me and this game does not cease to amaze me with its metaplot as you play a game that explores a malignant game that wants to spread like a virus and it feels so real at times but I do not wish to spoil anymore.

Challenging gameplay, but even when it's at its most brutal I can't help but love it. The atmosphere, hidden story, and gameplay are the best I've ever encountered in a deck builder roguelike. It's hard for me to put the experience into words, but playing this game was definitely a fun experience.

One of the coolest games I've ever played. Constantly evolving, the story continuously grips you even after multiple failures. Which, as a roguelite (which still does not accurately capture this game's genre), is very important. The card game itself is solid, very solid. I'd bet that even people who don't traditionally enjoy card games may enjoy this one. It's sufficiently complex while also being very easy to pick up.

Yeah, this... this was quite the ride! You really don't have the slightest idea where this game is gonna take you, and you shouldn't, that's what makes it so interesting. At the core it will always be a simple trading card game (think something like Hearthstone, but against the computer), but that's not the point, that's not what you play it for. The card game aspect is passable and the rules change regularly enough that it doesn't get boring (in fact, "beating" it often just means figuring out how to abuse the current set of rules in gamebreaking ways, which can be quite fun). But the real treat is the story with its never ending WTFness and always wondering what the hell will surprise you around the next corner again.

The ending is particularly satisfying, giving you a nice little "what if?" treat that you'll be wanting for at that point but without dragging it out longer than necessary. And strangely enough, it's actually quite sad. Never thought I'd feel sorry for the old bastard at the end.

Good game, Leshy. Good game.

Best game design I've ever seen, but the execution of it through the audio and visual art is just as much of a masterpiece. I was in the Flow from start to finish, building decks in my sleep. Spoiler free review: It's good. I think it had too many ideas and is a perfect example of why not adhering to a core principal can bring a great experience down to simply a good one. Would recommend but temper expectations.

Spoiler Review:

I think Inscryption has one of the best first few hours of any game I've played in awhile. The dark, mysterious setting, obvious secrets you need to unravel, puzzles to solve, and the promise that losing only makes the next time easier. I love card games, I enjoy deck builders, and I adore horror. No brainer for me. The issue is that this is only one part of three. Had Inscryption revolved entirely around the themes of its first act it would have been a homerun, but it doesn't.

Upon beating Leshy you're immediately confronted with the first shortcoming of the story; the meta narrative. This is no longer a dark and spooky story about playing a game with life or death stakes... It's a video game as experienced by some kind of video creator named Luke Carder. Weird, but it could loop around in a satisfying way perhaps.

Act 2 completely ditches the low poly style for an 8 bit free roaming deck builder. In terms of the narrative, it's central to introduce the various characters that will serve as the focus for the rest of the experience. You're set up to take over one of the Scrybes, a mythical creator of cards.

You're immediately assaulted with 3 other decks, play styles, and mechanics that are kind of incompatible with one another. The gem deck needs resource cards, beasts are what you play in the first act, undead use bones, and the machines are all about building circuits or something. I ended up mixing gems and beasts as a good mix of utility and power. Overall the gameplay was fine, presentation was lackluster and felt like a downgrade.

After beating this the meta narrative shows its true colors. This is where I kind of lost faith in the meta narrative. Weird employees knocking on Luke's door, bad things happening in the night, it all presents itself like a generic creepypasta. I don't fully understand the intention but it feels like it goes nowhere and just wastes time.

Act 3 is a sort of return to form. You're locked up with P03, forced to play a game and help with what it dubs "The grand transcendence." Key mechanics change though. Death is just a set back, you're forced to play the machine cards, and there's not a lot of secrets or puzzles to find. I found this part particularly frustrating because occasionally you'd just roll bad RNG and be stonewalled at an encounter 3-5 times.

Towards the end you're presented with the culmination of everything; the 3 main scrybes are trying to take down P03 in order to stop its plan. The plan being.... To release Inscryption? There's some fiddling with your files and computer tomfoolery, perhaps the ultimate plan is to take over the world by taking over computers via Inscryption? It felt underdeveloped.

Naturally you help the Scrybes overthrow P03 and start deleting Inscryption. The finale really confused me. There's time taken to develop assets and scenarios for the Scrybes you don't face in the 3d world. Graveyard chess and a full blown Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Disk hologram battle that are invalidated after maybe 10 minutes of gameplay. At the very end you simply see Luke trying to destroy the floppy disk and then getting killed by (presumably) a GameFuna employee in order to take the disk back.

Post-Game you're given the option to run through a challenge based version of the first act which is really what I wanted from the beginning. It's a good saving grace.

Overall, there was a decision to focus into a meta narrative that undermined the worldbuilding and characters of the actual game being presented. I don't think this was the right decision. Meta narratives are very tricky to pull off and when your game is two completely separate parts (The game you play vs home videos you're watching in between acts) it may be a hint that the pieces aren't connecting properly. Luke's random comments also took me out of the gameplay when they came up.

I liked it, a lot of this reads as negative because I know it could have been much more. What is here though is worth buying.

Excellent game through and through. The score is excellent at placing you mentally where you see physically on the screen. Narrative is chilling and thought provoking, honestly superb and genuinely creative in an era where that is not often the case. Gameplay was damn near seamless for an individually developed game, I know I certainly couldn't make this bugless of an experience on my own given infinite time. Seriously a banger and a steal at any price, especially even the full 20, but if you're lucky enough to see this game on sale PLEASE do yourself a favour and don't hesitate like I did for so long. 10/10 respectfully busting.

Oh man, this game is just incredible.

Graphics are pretty good for what the game is, i don't think they need to be amazing anyway but it was definitely capturing. I don't really want to give too much away, let's just say it isn't what it might seem at first. I know basically all other reviews have said that too but you will know exactly what I mean if you played it. It is definitely worth finding out.

Best part for me on a personal level is that the character has the same name as me ^-^ that helped make me feel more involved in the story but i understand that won't apply to everyone.

Only gripe I can think of, if any, is that the story-line and acting is a little bit unrealistic and tacky, but honestly I don't care about that. It didn't have to be Hollywood material, I still enjoyed the hell out of it. There are just so many minor details about the game too that make it so enjoyable such as the humour and the characters who really capture your attention. It is also not too difficult that its frustrating but not too easy that its boring. I mean, I completed it in 16 hours but it felt like much, much longer. If I'm honest, I probably won't be playing it again anytime soon but it is a game that will stay in my thoughts for a very long time.

So much thought has gone into this game and all I can say to Mr Mullins is very well done!

This game is really addictive. I bought it without knowing much about it and I am glad that I did. However, I wish they would fix the issue with start button. I almost stopped playing it. Running into a bug before you have even started the game is not a great way to get users to play. If the start button doesn't even work, it makes you think the entire game will be a buggy mess, so why bother. I almost didn't even play it. If you are reading reviews, don't try using the start tile just use the continue tile.

before delving into the review, one thing should be made very clear. This game is an experience best gone through without prior knowledge of what it is about.

to write a brief piece on what I think. This game is brilliant. The atmosphere is immersing, the story is great, and the gameplay while it can be rather unforgiving if you get a bad draw. overall i find it rather fun, despite never really being one for card games. The game contains heavy puzzle elements, with some being required to progress and some to earn some bonus rewards of some sort, even including a secret boss fight.

MINOR SPOILER---

In some parts of the game you may be required to die a few times to unlock new mechanics, this can be frustrating if you're unknowingly attempting to continue without a mechanic or item that is required. However it is very unlikely that you will be affected by this as its highly likely that you will slip up at some point and be unable to complete the whole game without dying.

The game works in several acts, and the player is thrown through a bit of a loop as each act comes to a close.
Many people will be upset that most of if not all of the advertising is towards the first act and doesnt mention the later ones. I do understand that it may irritate some people who really did just want a simple card game with a bit of lore mixed in, but I personally think it makes the game all the better due to it allowing the game to catch the player by surprise.

In conclusion I would say that Inscryption is a game that many people wont be interested in. But if you want to solve a mystery and discover the secrets held not only in Leshy's cabin but in the game as a whole, while playing an excellent card game along the way? I would 100% say that Inscryption is worth the cost.
Inscryption has quickly rooted itself as one of if not my new favourite game due to the gameplay, the worldbuilding and amazing storytelling. overall I consider this game to be a niche game that's not for everyone, and because of that it does what it attempts to do so excellently. many will consider this game a waste of money, many will consider it a masterpiece. I am a part of the latter. And if what I've described so far sounds good to you, then chances are you will be too.
I'd rate this game a 10/10

The base game is great. Without saying anything that could spoil it the story is a whole lot of fun and asks you to actively engage in breaking the game - I kept bugging all my friends with screenshots they didn't understand that I thought were hilarious.
At one point a boss took my cards away from me and belittled me because I made an infinite loop. And it actively encourages this.
The humor is very meta and the writing is witty. It does a great job of using a card game as the basis for something larger and deconstructing its own system.

There's an extra mod that makes the base game into a roguelike, it's extremely RNG based and unfair in a lot of ways as the game was clearly not created to be played this way. I find myself frustrated more than having fun. It's great if you don't increase the difficulty, but then you don't unlock any new cards or story and after a certain point it's just going to piss you off.

Fantastic game. But don't come into this expecting a roguelike, it's an amazing story game with a roguelike taped onto the side of it.

I am not even a fan of card games but this game is just so much fun. Lots of random encounters that feel like a horror version of D&D with really cool story-telling. The graphics and SFX help you get immersed and focus on the adventures that the "DM" sets you on, and there are a lot of really cool mechanics that really force you to reconsider how you play.

Honestly just a really good game in general. When i first played i found just the game super fun but then when the lore started revealing it just got 10x better. The game can be frustrating at times but i can say, as a huge rage quitter, the entertainment of the game made up for the mild progress resets that happens when you die. If there is one thing that was inconvenient to me playing this game was just how short it was. Although, i still feel like the ending wrapped it up well and even the short play time didnt really matter. Personally, it took me 14.8 hours to do a full playthrough and the "secrets" you have to do to progress the story came to me easily. The game is a little hard but trust me, its worth the money.

Its fun and challenging. I love the way you have to be extremely careful which cards you choose and which paths you take. Overall the game is a solid 10/1o

If i had a Nickel for every time i died in act I, I'd probably be pretty Wealthy, Act I is pretty tough to the Point i had to use the Kaycee Mod Cheat Unlock to get to the other Acts! None-the-less it's an amazing game and definitley worth the amount of money required to buy it!

Weird, annoying game. Illusion of options but no real decision making

Sweet Leshy Jesus. This is the best game I've played in YEARS.
Take a deck-builder and encase it in an insanely creative and cinematic adventure that passes through different worlds and game styles with well thought out diamond sharp mechanics. Sprinkle in a bunch of secrets and puzzles.
I don't have enough words I'm so elated.

You want to play this game.

This is an excellent game that I recommend to a sizable number of people. It is a stylistically interesting game, more so perhaps than the promo material lets on- however, (spoiler), that is broken up by jaunts into the life of a probably intentionally unlikable and annoying real-world streamer. It's not unbearable, but you are forced to watch these to get a more balanced view of the plot, which is core to full enjoyment of the game.
The soundtrack is a really pleasant surprise- it's excellent and fits precisely where it is. It's a fairly lightweight game as well and the settings are flexible enough to run it on most pseudo-modern computer. You get a lot of bang for your buck, visually. It's well-composed, lit, and rigged.

This is high up there on my list of best-liked indie games, and is frankly even better with the release of (possible spoiler) Kaycee's Mod, which adds another layer of replay value and extra lore, which is perfect after one's first playthrough. That goes double if you, like me, enjoy the very beginning of the game. I do wish we got the early-game experience with (significant spoilers) the other Scrybes- P03's was fun, and the contrast between Leshy's endgame (death and re-incarnation) and P03's (reboot) was funny. Grimora is a great character, and I loved what I got to see of her and her cameo at the end of Kaycee's. Magnificus... well, every race has to have a loser, I guess.)

If you like deckbuilding games (I'd compare the AI difficulty to Wingspan automata), or you like fearsome critters/Americana lore, this is a perfect game for you. If you like the difficulty of games like Darkest Dungeons, this is a good fit. Really, even if you haven't in the past, I'd encourage you to give this game a shot. If you're on the fence, Manlybadasshero on Youtube offers an enjoyable playthrough.
