Used to play this on PS2, didn't know how it would hold up 20 years later and it's still surprisngly fun

Your local ninja.
Your local ninja.

Fun game but short. Look on pcgamingwiki for 16:9 resolution and how to limit the framerate to 60fps otherwise, the physics break on windows 10 since DirectX 8 and below has broken V-Sync on it.

If your monitor is higher than 60hz, you can use DXVK or other methods to limit the framerate as well, the nvidia driver's framerate limiter won't work in this case due to the old version of DirectX used.

Edit: i forgot a few things.

To play online using Radmin VPN or SoftEther VPN you MUST install Direct Play by looking for "Turn windows features on or off" in the start menu, open it, and under "Legacy components", enable Direct Play. otherwise the game will crash with no error message upon trying to host or refresh games.

Note: the game also uses Gamespy for online, and might fixable using OpenSpy, but i didn't look into it.

You can also get alternative languages here (The game by default on steam only has English, with alternative languages being stuck to the retail disc releases of the game) : https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=584170647 , the Registry path won't be correct unless you run the game in administrator. if you don't want to run the game as admin you can always do CTRL+F in regedit and type "Dredd", keep doing this until you find a DWORD (32bit) value named "Language". You might need to run the game at least once for this registry value to appear.

I would argue this is a hidden gem.

Its certainly not perfect, with its budget showing at times, but it manages to do a lot right, such as a good atmosphere and art design, and fun campaign levels.

Great game, it's an oldie I get you, but it's a good game... a FPS in the Dredd world... you can change your AMMO just like the movies, and even though the missions are not long, I enjoy the futuristic landscape and the dystopian world of Mega City One. Graphics are remastered from the console version so it looks and runs better. I have enjoyed my time, and wish this franchise would revive again, Dredd is such a cool character, This is a must pick for Dredd fans!
just finished the game and the last missions are a little too much "DOOM" for my like, but still the game is great. This is a very good 1st person shooter, I hope it gets rebooted won the current next gen consoles, it would be amazing to see the world of Dredd with modern grphs

You'd better think twice about playing this game if you have an unlicensed goldfish in your house

DarkMjolnir
DarkMjolnir

It's fine. Not quite worth the 8 dollar price tag....maybe half that. For what it offers. It's a basic game-sets'em-up-you-shoote'm-down type fps.

That said, there is one aspect of the game that I find interesting in today's cultural/political climte - you often have the option to arrest your enemy instead of just killing them. That introducing a kind of moral ambiguity to some of your actions that I think could be something a better, more thoughtful game might explore...yes there are games that will give you a choice in some aspects but this game the choice is very much in the heat of the moment. Enemies will start surrending after getting hit few times by you, giving you a split second to decide whether you keep pulling the trigger or stop and risk taking damage trying to arrest them.

A wonderful game, you are Judge Dredd and zombies are infesting Mega City 1, you have to put an end to them and any criminals in your way, leading up to the defeat of the Dark Judges from another world. The story is supposedly 6 hours, I wasn't counting, there are a variety of weapons you can equip as secondary to your main gun which has multiple bullet types accessible via the scrollwheel which keeps you well equipped as long as you have the ammo. I only ran out of ammo once on the leadup to fighting Judge Fear but you can have a fun time elsewhere B-Hopping to where the blue arrow tells you to go and blowing things up. The campaign had me surprised that it ended so soon but there is a Deathmatch mode and unlockable bonus mission/challenge sort of levels if you do well enough in the campaign so there is plenty to do for the £7 price tag. At release it was probably not worth the money as the main draw of the game does not last long but now I can say its worth the money.

Also I don't think it has local multiplayer on the PC version so the store page might be inaccurate as it wasn't immediately obvious to me how to do it.
PS: YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO INSTALL AN EXTERNAL FILE TO GET IT RUNNING ON MODERN SYSTEMS AS I COULDNT JUMP WITHOUT PUTTING THE "d3d8.dll" FILE FROM HERE INTO THE GAME's FILE

if you can look past all that then its a definite recommend for any Judge Dredd fan. 8/10

Beaten - Around 6 hours

An original xbox game based on Judge Dredd. It's over the top in a 90's sort of way. And in the comics themselves. Pretty good! Short, but quite enjoyable. A bit dated, but there is charm to that. Worth it if you like ps2/og xbox era fps games.

Short and fun Judge Dredd game where you ARE the Law. 2004 game, so don't expect to have your eyes pleasured immensely. Art direction is pretty faithful to the comics, with some killer skyboxes of Mega-City One's skylines. Lots of references for fans of the comics, and you don't need to have read them (though I highly recommend you go and do so) to understand what's going on.

Oh, and you get to arrest people for unlicensed goldfish possession.

It's cheap enough without a sale, but it's up to you whether you want to get it for full price or not. It's a decent enough romp all the same, so it gets a recommendation from me. 7.5/10.

As glorious than when I first played it on gamecube.

Insperatus
Insperatus

Hasn't aged particularly gracefully (much like us 2000AD fans) and suffers from a distinct lack of information during game-play. It's mindless FPS from the get go, with a full compliment of Judge ammo and no indication of how, when or why to use it. Equally frustrating is the lack of prompts. Am I meant to arrest these perps or execute them? If it's the former, what button should I press to slap the cuffs on them. Ooops, not that one, I just decapitated a graffiti artist with a High Ex round.

Perhaps the worst sin is the lack of subtle seditious parody that was key to making the comic book so iconic in the first place. It's a game that celebrates the very violence the game celebrates. It's a difficult tonal shift to reconcile and there clearly wasn't the programming power to fit in anything approaching those levels of irony into the game.

It's probably time for a major reboot done by someone with a passion for the source material. So, definitely not Sylvester Stallone.

Dredd

Dredd. What's in the name? It is one of the most criminally underrepresented settings in the history of pop culture. No less brutal than 40k, second only in scale. Can you guess how many Atomic Wars the universe of Judge Dredd had? Anyway, if you decide to take this game on, be ready to be called a neo-fascist oppressor on a regular basis. And prepare to enjoy this role to the fullest.

I don't know as much as I'd want to about the universe, but it seems like the game is rather lore-friendly. The plot is a barrel of fun that involves all kinds of supernatural stuff like a death cult and ghosts judges, humorous delivery and heartwarming references, as well as your good old virus to kick things off properly.

"We can do this the Easy way or the Hard way."

Or preferably the Medium way. I decided to play on Hard from beginning to end and I regret my decision. On that difficulty, enemies are the spongiest, they take a ton of lead to go down. As a result, there was some severe ammo scarcity involved, which felt reasonable to me but may not seem so to others. I sometimes went dry and had to leg it, particularly in the levels that mostly threw monsters at me instead of people, since only the latter drop ammunition. If you don't want to deal with any of these problems, I'd advise you to go Medium. But it doesn't hurt to try Hard first since you can change the difficulty between levels anyway.

Graphics

The outdated graphics are saved by the stylish artistry, tastefully colorful lighting, and architectural gigantism. Can I say that the game is under-designed as a compliment? The models are low-poly, stylized, and while the visuals don't really hold up, they also aren't an eyesore by far. Where the game excels at, are its gorgeous backdrops that are full of neat detail and animated objects - from flying cars to smoking factory pipes. It's cyberpunk on steroids and it appears as relentlessly hardcore as the setting demands.

Weapons & Enemies

The weapons look great, have cool reloading animations, and behave as they should. Some could use more oomph, especially the Lawgiver, and the shooting overall is passable at best. However, your shots stagger enemies in different ways, depending on what body part was hit, which partially compensates for the lackluster gunplay. Scream at them criminals, shoot the guns out of their hands to arrest them, blast their heads off to witness fountains of blood! That’s what makes combat satisfying. I don't think there's a reason to aim for different limbs aside from the ones I mentioned, but the game makes a distinction, so I can only approve.

Still, the weapons are only as good as the enemies they shoot. A-and... the enemies are slightly lackluster, too. They don't vary that much, they are all humanoids. You will encounter ghouls, thugs, zombies (in the mall, a homage I hold dear), cultists, even skeletons. But basically, there are just two types in terms of behavior: melee and ranged. Both are dull and deadly. Also, the bosses were okay for a shooter. Mostly puzzle-like: lure it somewhere, then push a button, etc. Doesn't sound like I'm in awe, and I'm not, but I still think that the roster was serviceable enough, otherwise I wouldn't recommend the game.

Levels

The levels are vast and multi-layered, sometimes gigantic, and feature a surprising variety of environments for a game that short. Fine and dandy but, and I know that's what she said, some of them were even too huge for my liking, considering that there was no map in sight. Yet, for the most part, the levels are more or less linear, with no urgent enough incentives to explore. Yes, you can find ammo, seldom sub-weapons, medikits, but they usually come at the price of wasting even more ammo and health than they're worth.

As it stands, no backtracking that isn't related to your objectives is normally needed. More often than not, you can just run ahead, visiting every other room along the way. The markers will lead you where you need to be. There's nothing to do there anyway, aside from admiring the backgrounds. The environment is non-interactive and indestructible. There's but a drip of inconsistent interactivity here and there, you can blow up an occasional barrel or a cash register, which... would be impressive... 30 years ago? I'm not even sure if there are any secrets, I didn't find a single one. You won't miss much by skipping most of the exploration is what I'm saying.

The majority of your primary and side missions will be about saving survivors or apprehending bandits. Escort missions are always a terrible idea from the game design perspective, but the implementation is tolerable here. Naturally, enemies and survivors will get stuck here and there, but it wasn't the worst pathfinding I've seen. Besides, no one says that there can't be casualties. Use the main principle of porn: you got stuck, you get fucked.

"You fought the jank and the jank won."

Probably refresh rate issues (tried to enforce Vsync, didn't work):
- Got stuck in place after loading the game, had to restart multiple times each time it happened at first, then tried pressing the directional keys during the loading screen and got more consistent results (close to a 100%, in fact). Indeed, a setting so brutal even Dredd gets paralyzed with fear from time to time.
- Jumping barely works. Good thing you don't need it aside from the training and once or twice in the campaign. When you really need it, try crouch-jump spamming for more consistent results (seems totally random).
- Sticky geometry, this one isn't that detrimental. Stay away from these coffee tables and cupboards with sharp edges. Just like in real life.

Judgement Time

All in all, I didn't expect anything at all, so what I got was bound to exceed my expectations. Dredd vs Death isn't 'the Dredd FPS' of anyone's dreams, yet it turned out to be a genuinely solid game, a heartfelt creation that just sits there for years, watching you from the store page, saved and preserved, like in its own iso-cube. Flawed as it is, it isn't some soulless cash grab or a half-assed tie-in, which it could have easily been. And did I mention that it has a banging OST?

The game could use a reboot in the form of an Immersive Sim, you feel me? I would so love to run around Mega-City One, soaking in the impressive degeneracy of it all! Hell, I'd be satisfied by even just one enormous Mega-Block like in that massively underrated 2012 Dredd with glorious Karl Urban. The man didn't take off his helmet even once, imagine what a sacrifice it is for an actor! Ugh, I hate dreaming about it since an idea as grand as this will never come to fruition, most likely. Now, GO DISPENSE SOME JUSTICE while I wipe my manboy tears.

Pretty short, took me four hours to beat. while soaking everything in. So it's kinda' linear, but it's definitely that time periods style of shooter I would put it in with turok, duke nukem or metroid: prime. easy to beat and run through. hard to get a good score. definitely trying to add replayability outside of the story mode, so big points for that.

The settings are great and there are some great tongue in cheek moments like a zombie apocalypse in the mall and some oneliners. It definitely sticks to the comics lore though it doesn't dive too deep I feel it could've standed' to have a few more cutscenes or atleast longer ones.

Outside of the main game it has a few game modes like "zombie apocalypse" and "prison break" and a few more. I saw a few servers up for the multiplayer when the sale happened, but now none. I guess it was people just hosting for friends trying it out. there is also a co-op mode I haven't gotten to try as well.

All in all I would definitely recommend it solid 10/10

Good game you can get cheap on sale and takes less than 5 hours to beat. If you're a classic shooter fan or just a Judge Dredd fan, be sure to pick this game up. You won't regret it.

Its a fun Dredd story and having Dredd himself monologue every 2 seconds is great. Arresting those lawless scum was always fun. A couple times I would kill somebody that started to surrender causing my law meter to go down which was kinda annoying. The shooting is solid though some guns just dont do enough damage to be used. The enemy variety is decent, and some types you can just run past. Mission variety was also good, and each area was unique looking and had multiple side objectives you can do. Make sure you save often, because as far I could tell re entering the game you can't load back to a checkpoint, only saves. Other than a simple widescreen fix needing to be downloaded, this game looks and runs really well.

This game's world is what would happen if the republicans win the elections in the US.

Its a 15+ year old budget FPS game and it feels EXACTLY like that. So i will skeep the yank and the bugs and glitches and graphics.

The game sometimes has pretty big and complex maps but refuses to give you minimaps or maps or sometimes even the objective marker disappears or makes things confusing still.

The interface isn't very intuitive but you get the basics quickly, really wish the game told me which firearm mode was better for which enemies, or to let me take the secondary into the next level.

The game OBVIOUSLY feels more and more rushed as you go on, cutscenes become more basic, the first boss is "click this thing then wait for a while, then chase the guy and click another button to win", the second one is "run around clicking things and you win" the third one is a bullet sponge and the fourth one is a "hold F for 10 seconds on 3 guys while running away from a slow invincible enemy". As the game goes on the level design feels worse, less refined, and the difficulty increases not just with adding annoying respawning enemies but mostly with giving you less ammo and health, which WOULD be fine but the game overdoes this, even on easy you can end up dying a LOT on the last few levels because of how little ammo and health it gives you.

But lets face it, short of this and the movie, if you like Judge Dredd you will play it because they are the only 2 non-comic book related things that exist/aren't bad.

This game was an absolute blast to play through, and while I did get it on sale I definitely would have paid full price ($7.99 USD) for this game and still would have been mostly happy with everything I got. I'm not an avid reader of the Judge Dredd universe, though I have always been interested, so I can't say for certain if people that were fans of the series would like this or not, but for the two total hours of story in this game I'd say it's worth a shot.

To be clear this game is NOT perfect: The jump button works about 1/3 of the times you press it (though this could be an issue specific to me), the soundtrack is okay but it's not super memorable by any means, the only gun it seems they put a lot of thought into the mechanics of was the starting pistol, there isn't much reason to stay unless you want to max rank all levels and arcade missions, and the gunplay is incredibly bare.

However I think in this case the good outweighs the bad even if not by much: The story was campy and short but it was great fun while it lasted, the attention to detail in most areas were fantastic (my favorite examples of this are when they show the reasons people have been arrested and all of the ads throughout the game that make this really feel like a classic dystopian world), the guns were not interesting but they were always fun to use, even though the gun-play was bare in a lot of senses not many other shooters released in 2003-2005 were much better so it was par for the course, the environments were mostly diverse and the amount of enemies made the game feel really good to "explore" as much as you could, the arcade isn't super unique but a fun bit of content if you enjoy the rest of the game, and the pistol's special ammos were really fun to mess around with.

This is not a masterpiece by any means, but I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of FPS and sci-fi/cyberpunk games, as it is at least fun to play while it lasts.

6/10 Above average and great fun, but I can't see anyone sinking all that many hours past the main story into it, though the price of $7.99 USD absolutely reflects the amount of game play you receive.

A truly spectacular product centring around the "Judge Dredd" comic book franchise. One of the most noteworthy aspects of this game is the ability to apprehend lawbreakers by shooting their firearm out of their grasp, demanding surrender, and other scare tactics. Not only that, but Dredd's primary weapon, the "Lawgiver", is fitted out with multiple bullet types to further provide leverage in rather hostile environments. All in all, Rebellion's attention to detail in both gameplay and the lore are what made this video game unique.

Aside from the fact that on a modern rig, you'll probably have to set your refresh rate from it's normal rate down to 60% to jump with even remote reliability, this is still by far the best Judge Dredd game ever made, which is really quite saying something because the first that came out of the Supernintendo/genesis, a version steam also has when last I checked was actually quite good and among the better games of the SNES library.

This game has it all, staples of modern FPShooting for the time the game came out like a recharging shield coupled with real health and a nice melee attack, ability to switch instead of reloading, and a scope for a handful of guns make this game feel more comfortable to transition to from other games, a perfect arrest system, and best of all, Dredd's weapon modes for his lawgiver are perfectly represented by the mousewheel, allowing you to switch modes with relative accuracy to the amount of notches you scrolled.

Overall this game has a decent story and is a nice crash course into the 2000 A.D. universe unlike the Stallone film, and it has a strangely emotional and innocent feel that reflects as a nice time capsule for the year the game came out when 3D gaming was still relatively new, this is indeed a comprehensive 3D Judge Dredd experience.

A hidden gem of the FPS genre. I admit I know nothing about Judge Dredd but I found it pretty fun. I find it neat that you can arrest people in this game regardless of what they're doing, it's a cool concept having the option to either disarm enemies and arrest them or just kill them. The game has some pretty great humor as well, it had me and my cousins chuckling, and the voice actor for Dredd is perfect and he's got some good one liners.

It's short and sweet, you can't really go wrong here if you like FPS games. it's not a masterpiece or anything but it's simple and fun and that's all that really matters.

look, as a 40k fan this really scratched an itch for a fps shooter in a grim dark setting. and while you can tell its age in a weird way it perfectly adds to the game. now the only sorta gripe i have is with the AI and with the way that objectives arent as clear as i may have wanted them to be, but that can be put down to age and personal preference respectively, so over all id give it a solid 8/10 would deffinetly have bought for £1 again :)

Dredd vs Death is a pretty fun FPS, and is pretty faithful to the setting and source material of Judge Dredd (there are some inconsistencies with Dredd lore, but it's otherwise such a good setting they don't ruin anything).
The game is pretty good at what it's trying to be; you're just the Big Meg cop trying to do their job, even when interdimentional invasion is a concern.

While you might just run and gun in a normal FPS, DvsD has you do your job right, where you have to properly tell any perps to stand down and arrest them. It isn't just another run-and-gun 2000s FPS, there is nuance.

There are a lot of nice details to be found in the campaign and even in the minigames (using Justice Department guns as a criminal will have them explode as they did in the comics).

It's clear there was a lot of love given to this, and despite some minor drawbacks (the final act of the game suffered from feeling too barebones, Judge Fear's level and boss fight especially) it's a good FPS. If you like Dredd and FPS', you should grab the game on sale. The game has aged well (you might need to find a fullscreen patch to get it working on modern resolutions, but it worked without too many bugs for me), and I think it's high time we got either a remaster or a sequel.
I got 6 hours out of this game, including getting the highest rank in most arcade and campaign missions, so take from that what you will.

Decent as a licensed game. The shooting mechanics are still good, can still run fine on Windows 10, and I found the story to be good.

Classic game - is quite short and easy. The AI gets stuck often making it easy to shoot.

However is a little fun old-school game

This game rocks! It captures the feel of the comics better than both the movies combined. Controls are a little janky and the graphics are dated, but thus is to be expected from a game from 2003. A must-play for Dreddheads

Overall, a decent FPS with a fun take on Dredd's weapons and enemies. My only big con is that they're not a lot of weapons, and there's not a big variety of enemies.

If u are fan of the comics, you are prolly gonna like this. Playing with the Lawgiver is super fun but game is very outdated n just a decent game even for 2005 so don't expect too much but it's still enjoyable doe.

I really enjoy it so far. I think i beaten 5 levels. Ill finish the game when i have more time. I really expected this game to be bad and be a cash grab but this is honestly a great judge dredd game. The first 2 levels are pretty weak but after that, the game really starts and its awesome. Ive been playing more and more games with old graphics and the visuals are not an issue for me. Its actual a very charming game. The main reason i wanted to try this was judge dredd reminded me a lot of warhammer 40k and i really enjoy those games. This game is a lot like the movies with the satire ads and posters and crazy long sentences for the most basic crimes. Being able to actually arrest people is kick ass. Most resist obvisouly so its rare to actually do it. But yeah i really enjoy this game so far.

This has collected way too much dust on the devs shelf and should be given much more treatment.

Unironically I want every future adaptation of Judge Dredd, be it a video game or a movie, to take their cues from the way this game's voice-acting characterized both Dredd and the Dark Judges. Each Dark Judge is delightfully hammy and full of quips, just as they were in the comics, and Dredd's deadpan one-liners are also spot-on for his comic appearances. No "Gaze into the Fist of Dredd!" moment but its still damn good.

For a game that came out in 2003, and since physical copies for console run way too high, the PC version is worth playing. It's rather short (a single run thru the campaign took me no more than 77 minutes) and multiplayer is dead, but for what is it, it's not bad. Wish they would do a new one or even a remaster from top to bottom of this game, maybe add some more missions and improve certain shortcomings (movement in this game is rough at time, you will find yourself jumping all over the place).

I would check it out for how little money its going for, and if its on a steam sale, then I would say its most worth it.
