The game has a very sleek design - minimalist and functional, but not in an obnoxiously modern way. It just looks very clean. The core puzzle gameplay - moving knights around on a mini-chessboard so the right color knight goes on the right color squares - feels fluid and intuitive. Once you've solved a few of these puzzles, you've solved them all - the concept is simple, but that severely limits the potential puzzle depth. But until the gimmick wears off, this puzzle game is very enjoyable. Recommended.

Good: Very simple rules :) Need to devise new tactics for later stages. Needs minimal chess background.
Bad: After you learn your tactics, the puzzles become really easy.
Verdict: 7. Short but sweet, Daily dose of "two-levels-per-day" and you are good.

As far as puzzle games go, this one is worth putting a few bucks down for, especially if you like regular chess. Each level is challenging while using very basic conventions and its a relaxing and rewarding experience!

Hello, I am Boi LorX and boiiii this game is good.

I bought this at a .50 cent price point, and to me it was worth it. I can already tell this is a great, relaxing, pick up and put down puzzle-game with very clearly defined objectives and with a slow ramp-up in difficulty (which I prefer over high initial learning curve games)

I really enjoyed another game called 'Campfire Cooking', which was about maneuvering marshmallows on sticks over a campfire, to cook them without burning them. This game feels very similar in execution.

The only thing I'd say is left to be desired is a little more explanation while navigating through the UI before you start playing a particular level. But it could also be said that they were going for a real minimalistic design, so this is definitely not a deal breaker. Just something to note.

I'd highly recommend this if you liked Campfire Cooking, or you were the type of person who enjoyed moving the knights more than the rooks in chess.

The mechanic in this game is that you can move pieces diagonally and no two pieces can occupy the same space. Red must move to the red outlined space, blue must move to the blue outlined space, etc. The mechanic is consistent, but just confusing, because diagonally moving isn't in a straight diagonal line at all times, it can move as long as there isn't a straight path there. Its confusing in text, and confusing in game.
(Edit: You move pieces in an L shape in order to change their positions on the board as pointed out to me. However, connecting the end points on an L shape is indeed a diagonal line, as the extruded face of the L shape makes the line no longer connected by the same 2 vertices, instead you're moving it from an upper vertices to lower vertices the do not exist on the same edge. So since you cannot take the straight path, you have to move along what amounts to an axis intersection to move pieces around the board.)

Also, nobody even bothered to finish the guides on all the levels, if that tells you how confusing it can be. I just don't get it, maybe (probably) I'm just not clever enough, but I don't feel that's entirely the case.

Wonderful game! It's taken me about five hours to beat all the puzzle packs, and there are daily puzzles on the more difficult side that add replay value.

The first puzzle pack, Pawn, was a breeze, really simple. Then they got harder. Queen was tricky until I saw a better way. The last one seemed impossible until the strategy just clicked. Still feels like I'm chasing my own tail sometimes, but I'm having fun doing it. Very good value for the price.

Fun simple game that's easy to pick up and learn if you already know how to play chess. Good to play if you want to kill around a hour or so. After a while, seeing the L movements becomes easier and you'll find yourself moving a piece without counting the squares. Only issue I have is that the difficulty of the daily puzzles take a drastically random jump in range.

I really really enjoyed this game! I got through it all in one sitting but that was okay by me! I really like games like that on occasion. It took me about 7.5 hours to finish it and that could easily be spread out into many sittings, since each puzzle is separate. The achievements are very reasonable in difficulty and can be gotten without spending hundreds of hours playing.

This puzzle game is one of those ones that really struck gold in its balance of simplicity and complexity. It's simple at its core but even with the ease of understanding the concept, it still proves tricky to get through all of the levels. If you like puzzles, I highly recommend this!

All I can really say is that this game is exactly what it looks like, and a good version of it. A minimalist puzzle game based on something almost everybody understands, and the game does a good job teaching you the rules anyway. If you like chaining together moves to unscramble a puzzle or want to test your chess brain in a new way, this game is a cheap (REALLY cheap) way to kill a couple of quiet evenings until you start hitting the puzzles that really stump you. If you're able to handle everything the game has to offer, it has unlockable Daily puzzles that are generated every 24 hours, giving the game near-infinite replay value if the concept clicks with you. Barring a very forgettable one-song soundtrack, KNIGHTS does everything it could possibly do as perfectly as a game this simple and inexpensive could. 8/10

This review is right on the barrier of positive and negative, but overall, I'd say negative. It's a pretty simple little puzzle game in concept, just move the knights around to their colored squares, but as the board fills up with more pieces and you get bigger boards, it gets more complicated.

But where it falls down for me is that once it starts filling the board up except for a few squares, it basically becomes a sliding block puzzle, only in a different format, which is the most boring type of puzzle. It's all just moving a series of knights around just to be able to move one knight from one side of the board to the other (or, more often, from one square to the one right next to it, but due to the way knights move, you have to circle the board), so it's really just looking for one move that has a fork, where a knight can go to two places so you can get it out of the way, and then working backward from there. It gets a bit tedious after a while.

My other problem was the damn board orientation. Why is it diagonal? It makes no sense and is really frustrating. I would catch myself after I was deep into a puzzle with my head tilted (edited to change this word because freaking Steam seriously censored the word I used, which is what you do to the hammer of a gun to get it read to fire) to the side so I could actually look at the board in a reasonable way. There should be an option to make it just be straight up and down, or horizontal, or whatever. The more I played the more annoyed I got at it.

Since this is just a dollar, I'm sure you can get your money's worth out of it, but since every time I tried to play it I ended up quitting in frustration at the boring later puzzles and with a crick in my neck, I'm saying negative for me.

AurenNorizawa
AurenNorizawa

A puzzle game where you match colored pieces to the right tiles. Movement follows an 'L' pattern that knights use in chess (hence the name).

Colorblind options are available (nice addition, but makes sense if gameplay is based on color-matching)

Difficulty increases in the form of larger boards (5x5 being the max).

Replayability is possible with daily missions, which I found more difficult than the base levels.

A good pick-up game for those quiet moments: cheap and has cards if you like those.

KNIGHTS has an excellent game design, is extremely smooth and tight, and offers lots of puzzles built around the same basic concepts. The first handful of puzzles were really fun, but I didn't find the repetitive completion of these puzzles to be interesting. In the end it's just not for me, but someone who likes doing this type of puzzle (repeatedly!) will probably enjoy digging deep on this game.

I got this game on sale for $0.49 and would only recommend it to people who would enjoy doing a large bunch of the same kind of puzzles.

It's more about making space to let other pieces have priorities, so spacial and planning is the key for the puzzle.

I got this a few years ago when I was in the middle of a puzzle gaming addiction lol, but I FINALLY finished the main levels. Have played on and off every once in a while for short periods of time, and lately have enough free time atm to dig back into some more puzzle games, but man the last Queen and King levels were really challenging haha.

If you're looking for a casual puzzler, the first three level sets should be fun and doable in about 2-3ish hours, and some of the Queen and King levels aren't too brutal, but the endgame definitely seems for people looking for a challenge... oh yea, the Daily puzzle sets are pretty hard too, only achievements I have left in this game, but it'll prooooobably take me a while to finish em. Hopefully the dev makes some more similar puzzle games in the future, I'm currently enjoying their other game Peg, which I would also recommend! :)

Major Pros:

    • Good spread of difficulty
    • Endless puzzles

Minor Pros:

    • Clean minimalist graphics
    • Color-blind palette

Major Cons:

    • Large difficulty spike in the middle

Minor Cons:

    • No volume control

Recommendation

I enjoy the increasing challenge of KNIGHTS along with the endless replayability. I foresee many users getting a lot of time out of the game with the plethora of new puzzles every day. I thought the graphics were clean and really appreciated the alternative colorblind-friendly palette. My only issues were around the sudden (but not insurmountable) difficulty spike with the introduction of the yellow knights and the lack of volume controls in-game. I recommend KNIGHTS to any players looking for big value out of an endless puzzle game, especially if they can appreciate the minimalist style.

Finished the game (without the daily challenges). It's short (2-3 hours), very simple (all the mechanics are presented quite early), and to be honest - pretty boring. I bought the game because i liked the idea - but i'm quite disappointed - most puzzles weren't interesting, they just gotten more and more complicated (more steps, longer solutions). It's pretty damn cheap, but still, I expected more.

JKillz
JKillz

Mildly recommended for puzzle gamers.

As a big chess fan growing up, this immediately grabbed my attention. The simplistic look and soft ambient soundtrack is very fitting for relaxed concentration, which is needed as some of the higher levels . The biggest downside for me was the repetition. After the initial starting levels, there are no new gimmicks or layers added to the puzzle. It is just a well dressed L shape movement sliding puzzle game when you break it down. Despite that, the daily puzzles add infinite replay-ability and its very cheap, so if you like simplistic puzzle games, then this should be enjoyable in small doses.

KNIGHTS gently moves from D5 to F6 in a simplistic yet brisk puzzler that forces you to think three turns ahead.

WHAT I LIKED:
+ "Knight to E4". The role of the titular chess piece, which moves in a "L" formation (either one horizontal or two vertical, or one vertical and two horizontal), is the most strategic of all the pieces. This puzzler fully exploits that particular manoeuvre by tasking the player to position certain coloured knights in designated spaces. A puzzle or two later, and you'll be thinking like a knight all day and all night.
+ Chess boards grow from simplistic 4x4 layouts to intricately larger boards, with obstacles and other coloured knights blocking the way. The puzzles, particularly in the "Queen" and "King" pack, can be incredibly challenging which consequently offers several brain-teasers in the process.
+ Minimalistic UI and basic movement animations enhance the game's accessibility, resulting in quick-paced puzzles.

WHAT I DISLIKED:
- When a knight is selected, a silhouette on the available spaces appear, hinting to the player the various moves it can perform. With that in mind, the vast majority of puzzles can be completed by just continuously clicking a variety of combinations until all the knights find their designated spaces. Particularly in the "Daily Levels" and "King" pack, where the initial complexity unfolds into a simple "trial and error" procedure.
- Speaking of the randomly generated daily levels, as they are all produced from seeds of the same board layout, with enough practice the player can quickly adapt to the common patterns used in each of the levels. Ultimately though, there really is no incentive to come back each day and complete these generated levels.
- Just two colours of knights are used throughout the game, resulting in the puzzles' longevity expiring fast. Expanding the board size and increasing the number of colours used could've made the later puzzles more memorable and enticing.

VERDICT:
5/10 bishops, because we all know bishops are the secret weapons in chess...

Reasons to get/avoid:

Get:
- Calm - For a puzzle game about chess that's designed to be rather complicated, Knights is actually rather relaxing. It certainly gets a little confusing and more complicated the further you progress, but I genuinely think it's really nice.
- Easy(ish) achievements. - If you're an achievement hunter like myself, achievements are quite an important factor within games, KNIGHTS has around 80% of achievements that are fairly easy to get. The other 20% takes a little bit of time and thought.
- Graphics - Simple yet sweet. Enough said.
- Sound/Music - It's relaxing, but doesn't do much for me.
- Price - it's free. SIMPLE.

Avoid?:
- Although slightly stressful at times, but honestly, there are not many negative things to say about it.

All in all, a Solid 9/10 . I'm a big fan of chess anyway, so that may alter the score slightly.

-Please bear in mind, this is my personal opinion and others will disagree-

Very cool little thing. Like the best puzzle games, it has a unique mechanic, adds new challenges as you advance through the game, and it does not overstay its welcome. Although, randomly generated daily levels let you enjoy the game infinitely, if you so desire. They're not nearly as fun as the main levels, however.

At the tiny asking price, this is a no-brainer for any puzzle fan.

Veteran Chess players could, at first glance, dismiss dropping money in a game built upon the mechanics of a single piece--specially when "full real deal" versions are so abundant (and frequently free); in the opposite corner of the board some Queen's Gambit-fueled newcomer, eager to dive below the waterline, could get to the same conclusion for completely different reasons. Both groups wouldn't do themselves any favours in doing so though.

In fact the knights that lend the game its title easily make up for a dozen hours worthy of puzzle cracking--and then some more--entirely on their own.

By tackling those puzzles at a comfortable pace--the game not only allows that but also encourages the player to do so with its "light unlock" system--fresh apprentices will be able to start glimpsing through the most erratic and unpredictable strategies in the game through focusing solely on the piece that usually carries them out; and growing capable of making their movement patterns second nature as the game progresses can be rewarding enough per se.

Seasoned players will be able to improve just as much by solving the final Level Packs--or even by taking advantage of specific scenarios that always have the potential of tricking players that are yet to experience such situations in real-life matches.

The elegant presentation (both graphics and sound wise) and the infinitely expandable "Daily" mode that comes after the curated campaign puzzles--all under a low price tag--make KNIGHTS a no brainer for any player (regardless of their experience) interested in the game.

Pretty easy up until the Queen Pack, but regardless is a fun puzzle game that might help you learn knight movement patterns if you play Chess.

HomieOhmie
HomieOhmie

A really good puzzle game that uses the movement of the most awkward to master piece of chess. The main levels are pretty good to understand the mechanics of the game and some are trickier to get than others, it tends to be a mix of straight forward answers, then one or two puzzles that you need to bash your head into for quite a while or get by doing a random series of moves.

The daily puzzles are also pretty good, being 75 puzzles divided in 3 sets, 25 in each set, and being generated by a seed, the only downside with the random generation in this game is that it makes some of the puzzles really difficult, while some are extremely easy. There is quite a lot of replay value if you like these types of puzzles, and for the price of 1 Dollar, you get quite a good amount of content and enjoyment.

Definitely would recommend to someone looking for a cheap and enjoyable game to sink a few hours into.

A surprinsingly clever game

I'll be honest, at first, I wasn't sure I liked it. By after solving a dozen puzzles, I had to admit to myself that it is really better than it looks and it grows on you...

What this game is: It is a puzzle game based on chess, or more specifically on the Knight's way of moving around the board. As such, it doesn't look like much at first, but the designer of this game has a creative way of adding complexity and depth to his game.

How does it work? You basically are moving blue and red knights around a board in order to make them reach like coloured cases. Restrictions added to the board make each set-up a unique puzzle and some of these will really make you think in order to be able to find the solution. There are 5 groups of puzzles, finishing one group unlocks the next one, increasing the complexity of the game. Solving the first groups will unlock the "daily packs", which really are three new groups of puzzles aside from the five original groups. These three daily packs seem to reset and change from time to time.

How does it perform? It works well, and will make you think! No bugs, easy on the eyes, soft music, and more importantly nice puzzles.

The good: the game works well and is suprisingly entertaining. It has good replay value, thanks to the daily packs, and the settings allow you to change the colours of the knights pieces if the default colour is not to your liking. The game doesn't require much in terms of computing power or HD space, which is minimal. It will run on a 10 year old PC, and will require less than 80 MB of space. And last and no the least, it is pretty cheap, making it a very good value!

The bad: Well the colours were one thing that I did not like much when I started playing. It is not a big issue really, but the presentation is a bit on the drab side. Aside from that, not much to say.

My take on this: This game is certainly worth the asking price. And if you find it for sale, you should not hesitate to get it. If you like puzzles, this one will really make your brain churn. Definitely recommended!

Chess puzzle games are really common now. I'm not sure why, but this one was earlier and knights are cooler than the other pieces. Nice abstract puzzle game. Ignore the immersive sim tag. You will not feel like a knight.

Good practice for knight movement. Lots of patience required for adjusting pieces constantly as locked spaces and competing for squares ramps up.

after you finish the puzzles that come with the game, there are an infinite sequence of daily sets, so the game is always re-playable.
There is a colorblind option.
There are no timed parts or complex movements.
There is optional music.

Sokoban but with chess.

It's extremely difficult to learn but once you know a few tricks you kinda able to brute force it.

Feels tedious. The beginning is fine, but eventually becomes too complex to be enjoyable.

You dont have much options for maneuver and you're constantly stuck trying to figure a long chain of moves to put everything as it should.

Maybe someone will like it, but it wasnt fun for me.

KNIGHTS is a chess puzzle game where you only have knights. The logic is to move the knights (red, blue and yellow) to the desired tiles. Game is very challenging, there are some hard levels which makes you think a lot. If you like chess and puzzle games, give this game a try!
