I am 32 years old.

My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.

When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.

Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.

With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.

After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.

Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.

Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.

Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

Thank you.

if i should describe this game, it's really unique and amazing.
It's have really interesting game mechanic's. i played often before on steam, up this day i still have original CD with this game. what i wish to see, it would be is remake of this game, or have another game.
i really enjoy playing it. even i play now less at that game. It will be always in my heart.
Graphic it's simple, and at that time i really was enjoing it, even now i enjoy that graphic. Music it's alos simple but interesting, it's siut well whole gameplay. i think that game deserve more attention. even tough it's 2024... I don't forget satisfaction from this game and fun what i had and have.

Warning: Broken Game!

This game has design/implementation defects that will render this unplayable for many gamers. The menu locks up at the "enter your name" bit and the game can't be played. The developers are aware of the bug but choose not to fix it.

Locoland is an ancient game from 2003. It's a whopping 20 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge.

It was an interesting twist on the RTS genre of the time, merging RTS gameplay with train tracks... you move your locomotive around to collect guns etc, and drive your train on the tracks to where things need to be shot. Well, given this is just a nostalgia gouge and nobody made a game similar since, it's safe to say the idea didn't catch on.

From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.

A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Now, we might say "Ah, but that's just the graphics of the time"... but it isn't. The game was released in 2003 alongside games like Rainbow 6, Call of Duty (how far that title has fallen) and Max Payne 2. There's no excuse for such crappy graphics back then, and there certainly isn't today.

The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. Likewise, resolution caps out at Super VGA.

The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.

Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state. This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience.

The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the almost unethical price of $5 USD for a game they know is broken. Don't give it to them.

This game was very cool at the time it came out. I totally loved it. But I would recommend to play it now, because there are no other games like this. Have you ever seen a hardcore strategy game in which you can move units only by rails? No! You have not! I strongly recommend to try this masterpiece!

If you are missing oldschool starcraft-alike strategy games, you need to play this. This is a totally new experience in gaming, I never played anything like Locoland. Gameplay, visuals and music are outstanding. Highly recommended

This game was very hard for me when I played it in a childhood. By i still remember it’s catching soundtrack and funny robots from a cutscene in the beginning. Surely will beat the game now, but it’s still goddamn hard =)

I've played this game when it came out. It's original name on retail is SteamLand, made by buka in late 2003 or something.
Definitely an unknown old game, but it's still something good. A mix between RTS and movement restricted rails, its something you should try out. Really love the music too. Had a lot of fun playing it before!

I was immediately struck by the unique artwork and style of Locoland. A surreal landscape which you battle across on trains isn't something you get to play everyday. Sadly, despite the game's strong visual appeal the game play falls apart quite quickly. Tutorials leave you painfully unaware of basic mechanics, such as reloading train cars via the repair station. On only the third level it became apparent that the computer has infinite resources as well as the ability to repair their warehouses for building more trains. A very frustrating fault since I was forced to constantly retreat to retrieve more ammo for my trains while the computer simply built more, restocking their forces by the time I returned and drawing out the level far longer than need be. Often I also struggled with getting all my train's guns to fire consistantly, adding to the frustration of taking down the computer's few remaining units. Also, the incessant tooting sound effect of the train's whistle will slowly drive you insane.

Pros
-very beautiful look
-quirky fun story
-unique approach to RTS

Cons
-unfair AI
-frustrating under explained mechanics
-lack of meaningful control during combat
-toot toot toot

DISCLAIMER: Review is based on approx. 1 hour of gameplay.

For some reason, I keep coming back to play this game as I feel compelled to not let the game beat me.

Even though it is a real time strategy game, it is more like a real time puzzle game, where you need to work out how they AI functions on each level.

Each level is different and the key is working out what you need to make to succeed for this level. (well done to the designers who have put a lot of effort into creating the levels).

It can be a really frustrating game, requiring you to try different tactics. The best advice is sometimes to stop playing and come back to it when you think you have found away.

By the way beware the Kamikazie engine!!!!

Also there is NO in game save, I have lost count of the number of times I have restarted a level. (If the developers read this, can you update the game to include an in game save please )

There is some quirks with trains getting stuck when they run into another train.

Extremely fun real time strategy game and will keep you engaged for hours! This is a very unique game, unlike no other I have ever played. The only disappointment is that it needs a sequel and much much longer campaign!

Well, it looks good, but on the second mission I got into some kind of stalemate, pressing the enemy to theirs depot and suddenly noone could shoot anymore for no apparent reason.

The trains seem to change tracks at seemingly any crossing, maybe this is a feature to make the game more interesting and its easy to start predicting after some time, but is there enoiugh here really? .... meh

Simply, do NOT buy this or if you buy it DO NOT install it.

It contains and install a virus on your PC, it's a known issue since two years now and neither Steam or the Dev ever did anything about it. For more information, you can check the discussions section.

For a dollar it's really nice game. I played it in my earlier days but I got stuck on a certain level. Overall the level design is brilliant, sometimes a bit frustrating but still, I got my 20 hours worth of fun with it, some of course being replays like I mention. Just beware that it's only single player campaign, meaning no multiplayer or co-op of any sort. AI is scripted and smart, most of the time, but the AI will run out of orders in the factory at a certain time, that's how I basically won the last mission, I kept stalling by sending kamitzes and breaking the rails.

failed to work properly on anything I tried it on. Windows 7, wine in WIN XP mode, wine in Win 95 mode. It crashes on video intro, if to remove videos it will run but will heavily flicker (2 seconds black screen, 2 seconds you can see game). Win 7 also has colored rectangular overlays on your map - like visual garbage.
maybe it's a nice game but it's useless for any device you can run steam on.
avoid!

Nostalgia hits hard, i never thought il play this game again, and to find it on steam is even bigger surprise. Big part of my childhood, good memories. It still holds up well, has that charm, the music, still very playable and fun except for some quirks that old games have like low framerate and non bindable keys (not much of a problem, all you need is LMB really). Definietly recommended to give it a try, for a dollar it wont hurt yer wallet and its worth much more than that.

Recommending against getting or installing this game, primarily due to the "Trojan Horse" reported and blocked by my Norton anti-virus on the CDPRO.BIN file installed with the game (file reported to be from 9 years and 9 months ago). Even if a false warning, first impressions are of a quite dated game (released 17 years ago) and not worth the effort or the risk.

Hum... A mixed bag. This is a very original RTS game. You assemble trains with cars with different powers and you go fighting on rails for 20 missions. Old graphics but still nice. Decent music.

No bugs or crashes. Runs fine on Win 7.

Now, no tutorial, no tooltips, no descriptions, 'easy' would be 'normal' or 'hard' for today standards... the old concept of getting the player to find out everything by himself and get frustrated with repetition. The game, though, is not hard to understand. The problem is the difficulty spikes to crazy. The strategy part of the game goes down the drain in some missions cause there's only one way to win and, even when discovering that could be part of the fun, it gets boring to try for the perfect timing over and over again. This game was promising, a sequel might fix and improve many of its flaws... but that seems unlikely. So what we have here is kinda a hit and miss experiment and nostalgic retro-gaming. But no more. I think this is a very niche game and I find it hard to recommend it to the masses.

Excellent game from my childhood. Especially great when you like trains, real time strategy and good for it's time visuals that have not really aged much. Game offers 20 levels with different biomes that are pleasing to look at. There are many trains available and some levels offer unending supply of money to experiment with builds. There are many little tricks that have to be learned which provide some challenge. Even though I'm older now, it's still great to get back and experience this strategy anew. Fantasy world is really great to immerse yourself into. I can say it's a great not very complex game for kids and adults alike. This game got me into more complex strategy games so it has special place in my heart. For me it's 9/10, if there ever would be second version, multiplayer, level editor and endless mode and of course more types of train cars are what I would add.

Also worth to note, 2 fixes: If you can't select player at the start, you need to launch the game as administrator. If game lags, use lower resolution (not the largest available). I had these 2 issues and I fixed them that way. it's an old game so it's understandable that it has errors on new systems.

I first played Locoland back when it was called Steamland, on a loose CD in a stack from an estranged family member almost 15 years ago. I spent hours attempting to play it on my already aging Windows 98 computer set up in my bedroom, and boy did I suck at it. Fast forward to about two months ago and I find it on Steam and, despite never being any good at it, I bought it.

Playing it now, I realise that the game isn't necessarily any easier - I'm just more patient. It's still tricky, and isn't exactly monumental as far as strategy games go, but I still enjoy playing it. As frustrating as it can be fighting against the enemy trains, mounting attacks on their factories and repair depots and fending off zeppelins, I think it makes the victories even sweeter because you really need to fight for it.

Locoland is not perfect. But despite its simple concept, it keeps you trying again and again until you prevail over the enemy with skill, patience, and to be honest, a decent amount of luck.

Best played in a good mood.

This game has unique concept that has not been replicated in any form yet, unfortunetelly, the uniqueness brings a lot of trouble alongside it as well. There are trains strictly better than others, sometimes they are overpowered as well. aquiring money is finicky, and the fact you got only one factory that makes every train makes the game unsuitable for multiplayer, if it would have been programmed into the game of course. one kamikaze could theoretically camp your factory the entire game...

As for the single player (THE ONLY MODE IN THE GAME!), The game gets much more enjoyable after aquiring flamethrower aproximetelly at mission 10. Before then homever, the difficulty can get insane. seriously, FUN black gold and citadel. the variety of the levels is pretty good, the sceneries change as well and aged pretty well for retro game like this. and if you get stuck on citadel, just turn the difficulty down and hope you can muscle through (pro tip: if you get all 5 money cubes in the level reinforcments will come)

Also there is a problem with the fact this game got a virus in CDPRO.bin, there are ways to overcome this though!
1. delete CDPRO.bin
2. search for steamland (the orifinal name of this game) on the interenet and download the demo
3. replace the steam.exe file in your steamapps folder with the demo steam.exe (steam.exe is the launcher for the game, not to be confused with steam as a service)
4. the game should be good to go and play virus!

IF YOU REALLY GET STUCK IN THE GAME
there are codes online that unlock all levels, so you can skip the already mentioned citadel, black gold and even some other like wep or swamp monster, which are brutal as well. I have used this numerous times at my young age.

I have replayed this game as a child many times, and the nostalgia hit hard for me. partially because of this, Im giving this game thumbs up. Its debatable if this game is worth 5 Euro, but if you see this game on a 90% discount, I can garantue you its worth a try!

An underrated masterpiece! This game brought me back to childhood.
Locoland (Steamland) it's a intriguing and original RTS game amazingly based on the rails logic. Since I played it for the first time I found it unique and after 2 decades I am still surprised by this game and how genial is the idea, that actually would deserve more. I am still hoping for a future of the genre and more levels/units/mods

I remember this game from my childhood and I completed it few times on hard mode but it still brings joy.
PROS:
- very original idea
- good graphics and very low requirements
- diverse landscapes and weapons
CONS:
- the AI is a bit retarded and repetitive
- there are few bugs
- the objective is almost always the same - destroy everything and capture everything
