First impressions are good. It's a solid RTS with heroes, knights, monsters and magic. It does a good job of bridging the gap between old school RTS games like Command & Conquer, Warcraft II, and new school RTS WCIII & Starcraft II.

Worth a buy for the nostalgia. Still needs a bit of polish (tree felling doens't leave a mark - I wasn't even sure the trees were being removed initially). This is a decent approximation of Warcraft 2, though lacking the charm (this game doesn't take itself too seriously whereas Warcraft did at the top level, though the humour was there below). Not sure if there is a map editor - there needs to be really if this is to really fly.

The campaign seems quite well designed (I've only done a couple of missions) with a mixture of traditional base buiilding and more hero-led missions. Hero units exist but are not as central as they are in Warcraft 3 (battles don't revolve around the heros with their death being in many cases the end of the battle).

Two factions so far, hopefully more will come in the future (though as an homage it is correct considering only Alliance and Horde existed in Warcraft 2).

I'm hoping that the developer has a successful launch and that they are able to continue to work on this.

Excellent game if you are looking for a classic RTS experience. The game feels like Warcraft 3 done on Warcraft 2 with some extra cool features like troops that can level up and much more!

Having played this for a little over an hour I am gonna give my first impressions of the game and I am gonna start with the negatives.

I do not care for the music. A good score usually is what sells me on a game and I am sorry to the composer but I have yet to hear anything that got stuck in my head. It wasn't offensive, don't get me wrong. Just nothing gripped me.
Sound design and Voice acting were a bit weak as well. Some of the voice work I liked but some of it... kind of took me out of the game a bit.

Edit: Having a few more hours, the voice acting has grown on me a bit, just like the voice acting for a lot of older games. It has just the right amount of heart to it to go from "eh" to charming and it just took a bit of time.

Positives

This game plays like a mixture of Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3, and a mixture of most of the strongest aspects of both. A lot of time and effort and a lot of heart and care were very very very clearly put into this and it shows. If you had a basic understanding of most oldschool RTS games around that era of gaming, you'll be able to pick this up very quickly.
The game is pleasing to look at and has a lot of the charm Warcraft 2 did visually, but with the advantages of current technology.
The game runs smoothly, (at least on my machine) and I ran into very few, if any, hiccups with it the entire time I played.

As far as I have played, Chaos seems a bit strong as the game currently is, but this may just be my experience against the AI thus far and I eagerly await multiplayer

I strongly recommend this game to anyone who was a fan of Warcraft 2.

Fair warning: I've never written a review before.

Phew - no.

First and foremost: I love RTS games, I earned my money playing them and creating content for them, I enjoy to play them and I love grand fantasy stories which is why I always take it with a grain of salt that most of the better RTS of recent years have been in sci-fi/modern era settings.

The trailer for Loria came along and I was interested - the graphics weren't necessarily what I would have liked but the whole thing was charming enough.

I bought it with the launch discount, which gave it a very fair price and just finished the campaigns while travelling with my old-ish laptop.

Gameplay
The basic mechanics work alright, you can select up to 24 units, there's attack move, you can tab through your units. The devil's in the detail:

The pathfinding is alright as long as there aren't any ramps, rivers, trees, fences, fairies or pebbles in the way. Especially on later campaign maps your units just tend to run around aimlessly, get stuck on the ramp, inside of each other (not as exciting as it sounds) and seem to be unable to move.

That you can tab through your units is awesome and something I'm very used to. What I'm not used to is that units like Knights, that have no active abilities, are in the second slot while spellcasters like Clerics are in one of the last slots. Other games do this very intuitively where the spellcasters are at the front.

The hotkeys for your heroes as F1 and F2 is traditional. What isn't traditional is that your hero doesn't get selected for immediate use when he's in your current control group. (i.E.: you have your whole army with 10 units and two heroes selected. You hit F2, the camera centers on your second hero but you can't use his abilities because the focus window is still on your first hero).

The hotkeys in general annoy me as well - I don't want to hit P for Peasant, I want to hit Q for the icon in the upper left corner. I understand that this might be not as important for many players, but I thought I note it (and the fact that you can't seem to customize your hotkeys either).

That your units promote with enough XP to deal more damage and be sturdier is a good thing, but as soon as they promote they also heal back to full which, coming back to air units, makes for tons of hilarious situations where you can raid the enemies workers to heal your units back to full. It also makes for weird and powerful swings when a hero dies since that often triggers plenty of level-ups for the units that were around for the kill, healing them back up to full in the middle of the fight.

The AI is servicable for the most part, it rebuilds what you destroy (mostly exactly where you destroyed it, often while you're still there) and doesn't seem to cheat as far as I could tell, so that's a plus. It does, however, fall apart completely against air. With the mixture of pathing issues for it's units and the fact that it often trickles in units as soon as you're in range and pulling in units like catapults to defend you can trivialize most content as soon as you get some flying units on the field.

Finally there are some minor annoyances like why isn't there a display for how many workers are in a goldmine, why do I get an audio cue "Research complete" but can't see what it is, units stopping their current attack when you give another attack-move, air units awkwardly teleporting a few meters every now and again and so on and so forth.

But overall: still servicable, enough to let me enjoy a decent story but it feels like a chore to play. If this had multiplayer then I would have a hard time to bring myself to wrestle with mechanics that cumbersome game in and game out.

The campaign

Oh boy. You decide to stay away from multiplayer: understandable, you're up front about it, why not.

The campaign starts out decent enough: the intro video is great, giving the main protagonist a bit of a funny / macho vibe works well enough and the first missions are interesting enough with a bit of banter, some units straight out of Warcraft and so on.

But the whole thing quickly gets a little disjointed: practically every mission ends with you destroying the last building/killing the last unit, cut to black, campaign map.

Warcraft 2/3, which this game has taken 85% of it's everything from anyway, does this much better: there are some final words from the heroes, the overall story gets moved forward with some text on a scroll that gets read to you, it manages to inspire a sense of greatness and the fact that you ARE shaping a fantasy world, that this game ... has a hard time achieving. The dialogue is almost nonexistant after the third mission, even after the first one it gets very sporadic.

For example (mild spoilers):

the 7th mission of the human campaign has you fighting an epic battle against several enemy bases. You destroy the last building, the score board pops up, you go back to the campaign screen where the next and final mission is selected. It has a one-liner as a description, you hit play and you land on the map with the objective "Destroy the red base" in the upper left corner. That's it. That's all the suspense you get for the final confrontation of the game.

Or someone agrees to help you, your ally is uncertain if they can be trusted, 2.5 seconds later they prove their trust - any further comments? No. Some knights come charging in, old friends of the protagonist showing up to hunt him down. You defeat them. Any words on that? Nah, you slaughter old friends wordlessly and just carry on.

You come back to defend the capital, you charge in to help out the rallying defenders of the city. Any comment on that? Nah.

There are several months of war waging between your faction and the enemy faction. How is that explained in game? A single sentence. A SINGLE sentence.

The game shows that it had great voice actors and a decent idea to get a unique story off the ground. The game even shows you in the first two missions that it's able to react to certain situations with some hero chatter, to spawn units and so on - it just got abandoned after a small taste of the whole thing.

Final thoughts

The decision to skip multiplayer should have led to a tight single player campaign. Sadly that isn't done with slapping together 8/16 maps, adding 10 lines in the first two missions and then just make me kill base after base whose most notable increase in difficulty is the fact that my army is almost incapable of traversing any ramp.

Some minor thing like skirmish only on 5 maps, the cumbersome control issues mentioned earlier and smaller annoyances just pile up to make me not that interested in the game.

Overall I can't recommend this game but I have high hopes for the developer. I always appreciate a newcomer to the genre, the basic ideas were great (even if scavenged from certain other games) and I think that they'll achieve good things if they can get someone on-board that keeps the campaign engaging throughout.

And most importantly: those guys managed to finish a game and put it out there, something that is commendable in itself.

Good spiritual successor to Warcraft 2 and 3, but the only problem is the lack of multiplayer whether its lan or online.

I really don't want to see this game to fail, but I think multiplayer will be the only thing to save it.

No multiplayer yet, but the game has a very solid base, very reminiscent of the Warcraft 2. Controls are very familiar if you are used to blizzard RTS controls.

First of all - I love WC2 and he's got everything right - nice units, art style, music, voice acting and gameplay with solid impact when every hit of every unit you feel because of good sound design and animation. Yes, setting of WC2 is cliche, but with his cartoony aesthetic it's not a problem.

What have Loria from this list of GOOD RTS?
Nothing. Zero. Big black hole.

A game with absolutely zero personality, cringe voice acting, uninteresting story and boring gameplay.

Loria looks and feels like trashy and cheap WC2 clones from mid 90's - a games made for cash grabbing. Games like blindly copy basic formulas of new popular game to take a slice of pie.

Cheapness of artstyle (or even lack of artstyle) is noticeable even looking at screenshots and trailers, but I was hoping for good gameplay. And it somehow worse than WC2. Oh boy.

And I mention multiplayer?
What a good idea to copy cult classic with nice multiplayer and make your game WITHOUT multiplayer, right?

Better try to play Wyrmsun. It's WAY better.

Gives the nostalgic feeling of Warcraft 2 with similar music, units and strategies plus the hero system from Warcraft 3. It's fun to play but brings nothing new. Recomended for those who enjoyed Warcraft 1, 2 and 3 and anyone who likes strategy games in general with retro/2d graphics. As someone who played a lot of Warcraft 2 as a kid, I'm loving to play the campaign. Not recomended for those who want complex strategy games (not many factions, simple base building and trivial resource management) or for those who want something original or with fancy 3D graphics. Note that there is no multiplayer (yet).

The game is a lot of fun, and it has some very unique mechanics that make this game special. It is heavily inspired by the Warcraft series and the game succeeds at what it does.

The campaign is fun to play, I liked the level design which reminded me of Warcraft 2.

The developer (yes, it is just one!) is a nice guy, and puts a lot of effort into this game.
Sadly he has exhausted his financial means to build multiplayer, but he has promised to do so, after 3000 sales have been made.
Apparently a ton of people have the game already on their wishlist, but are not buying it. If you want to see mulitplayer in this game, you should support it.

A great tribute to classic WarCraft games, with a unique story and spoken dialogue. Definitely a passion project, one that I have been following since its IndieGoGo days, so don't treat this like an asset flip or cash grab because it's been years in the making!

I'm currently enjoying the game 4.5 hours in. If you do what i like to do and slam your army into the enemy, you'll find it a bit difficult haha. This game has a mix of new RTS functions and old RTS looks. If you like Warcraft 2 and 3 you'll like this game.
I have experienced a couple bugs but nothing so gamebreaking yet.
Your heroes level like Warcraft 3 which is pretty cool. I lok forward to finishing the game :) (If i can find it in myself to stop being a massive scrub and stop losing my armies)

Tip: the game get so much easier once you have a second mine.

Honestly a little bit rough. Not as optimzed or fluid as i expected, but maybe it will improve with polishment. Screen size seems a bit small for my tastes and unit pathfinding is not actually terrible but units will sometimes get stuck. As a game its great, its a bit on the harder side and beating missions often require a bit a turtling so you army can actually beat the enemy base, but fun none the less. Feels very balanced unit wise, with sure, some units like Manticores a bit OP, some other units not as good as the others but otherwise a well done game. I love the way units also level up giving it a but more depth as you want to save your veterans and heroes are a bit less central than in WC3, which for me is good. If you like WC3 and WC2 you most likely enjoy it. Its missing multiplayer i belive (tou there is skirimish against the AI) but the campaing missions, while may not be the most inovative or creative will still keep you on your toes as the AI can be very competent and cheeky, going as far as sending flyers to kill workers. Setting is generic but well done, feels more like Warhammer (fantasy) than WC, but i also like this aspect. Dont expect a high quality polished game, but the potential for improvment is there because the core is very good, but i would say for its price, it is very worth as it is.

Loria is an interesting game that uses the nostalgia factor of classic RTS as a jumping off point to build upon with some very experience-enhancing quality of life improvements and unique gameplay elements. An excellent way to kill time for a person who spent times with similar games when they were in vogue.

The biggest problem is, to my mind, some of the odd grammar that comes as a result of the non-English native dev. But it's really nothing.

entish

I was really hyped when Loria was announced and watched it on YouTube.

Upon purchasing it I immediately started going trough its campaign, along with constantly going into Skirmish battles with AI. I've already developed several build orders for both races, along with possible METAS to beat every AI difficulty.

I am really impressed by the voice acting, the story that is told during the campaigns and the two races which are pretty well designed. A really cool reminder of what RTS games used to be and that it was not about epic graphics, but rather the interesting gameplay.

A Map Editor would also be nice, as it will allow the community to contribute content.

Looking forward to see more from this game - maybe a new race in the future, possibly online battles with ranking system , etc, as it has all the potential in the world to be one of the most successful RTS games ever.

Awesome job, keep it up!

Hello RTS my old friend

This new RTS is openly a shout out to the great RTS games of old and it shows in what for me as an extremely fun game.

My only criticism with this game is that the asking price is high; I fully understand that indy games have limited budgets and sometimes it is better to see if the game will sell well before deciding to create servers for multiplayer (and sometimes it isn't even a choice) but I fear that the developers created a catchj 22 for themselves

Now being honest about the review I love Warcraft 2 and I was shocked by the game not feeling just like Warcraft 2 and think these really did make it feel more original than expected.

1. There are autocast spells which is something that never existed in Warcraft 2.

2. The roster is rearranged in a way that makes the factions play differently. For example in Warcraft 2 it was Knight-Paladin Paladin had healing and you had to order each heal. Now there is an autocast on a weak elven priestess making it a different feel. The Knight also shows up later without any spellbreakers making the swordsman more important. I won't bore you with every detail but the new roster makes the game feel more original.

There are more details but I thought I was wasting my money on a little nod to old rts games when this game feels a lot more original than it is. The Warcarft influences are obvious which is why I was pleasantly surprised by the new feel.

I would charge less for this but at the same time I can't deny having fun in a silly world.

A good throwback to the yesteryears of classic RTS gaming. Gameplay is solid, plays like Warcraft 2 with characters that look like theyre from Warcraft 3 with appropriately bombastic personalities for the more major characters

The RTS gameplay is very well rounded and feels just like Warcraft 2/3 with gathering 2 major resources and a 3rd for population along with your building requirements and upgrading system to boost attack or defenses of certian units.

Going into the campaign it has heros that for sure act and play like Warcraft 3 with characters leveling up persisting through each map.

The setting and the characters arent extremelly dark and overall feels like a super fun session of D&D with the over the top personalities of the main cast, at least from the Good side

The musical score isnt something thatll win awards but its certianly within the spirit and realm of Warcraft 2 with its use of midi-esque musics youd likely hear from the old days of gaming in the 90s.

Id reccomend it if you have 19$ to spare and want to relive Warcraft 2

Loria is fun, nostalgic and well executed for an Indy title. Skirmish mode is fun (unfortunately, no multiplayer yet, just AI). I like the style, gameplay, artwork, animations, voice acting, music. This is an easy purchase if you liked Warcraft 1, 2, 3. It’s most like what I would want from a Warcraft II reforged (an old school RTS with updated controls and mechanics). It features a great campaign mode and an editor that is a great start. I've wanted to play this kind of game for many years as I still play War2 and War3 all the time. Gameplay feels like Warcraft RTS with gathering wood and gold for resources and a great upgrading system but also with many modern updates such as character leveling up and items, etc.

CONS:
No multiplayer support yet and please add a setting to "Hide health bars when at full health" - also I have found a few minor visual bugs, but the developer is open to fixing them and seems very active in updates.

If you're into RTS this is a must play as I highly recommend it!

After finishing few missions of Loria, I must say: finally something for classic RTS fans!

Loria seems like a game that immediately evokes childhood memories of playing games like Warcraft, Command & Conquer and other RTS classics, when the genre was at it's peak. Yet, it brings something fresh, something new, something that one just expects from the game made in the current age. The controls are way more refined than in those titles made 2 decades ago. The graphics are fresh, voice acting is decent and funny, music nostalgic, but perfectly matching the visuals. The missions are not just straightfoward "attack and destroy", but often include elements from rpg/dungeon game genres. Oh, and the AI is much more advanced and unpredicatble than the AI opponents in those old classics.

Lastly, for those calling for the missing multiplayer, you obviously didn't get the point of this game. This is about the story, about restarting the same mission over and over on the hard level until you get that sweet dopamine release from deserved victory. This is about those long nights alone staring at the screen and trying to complete one more mission before sleep.

The pathfinding in the game is worse than google maps without service. Other than having to watch out for your units running halfway across the map to avoid hitting a pebble, the game is rather good.

Loria is a game lovingly inspired by the RTS classics, while at the same time possessing the conveniences of a modern RTS. It is clearly a labor of love, and is nicely polished - the gameplay is smooth, the voiceovers are quite professional, and the game counts with beautiful pixel art icons.

This game brings me back to the good old days when gaming was still fun. I can recommend it to everyone who likes a good strategy / indie with a nice story to it.

The game itself feels great, the controls and the behavior are known well because it's comparable with the old games like warcraft 2 and 3 which I played so many times. Comparable to those games this is also a bit harder to play, for instance I never died in normal when playing warcraft 3 but story mode, but in this game I died at least twice. (or maybe i'm just getting rusty ;-)).

rAge? Sniper
rAge? Sniper

I felt in love with this game from the first view. As somebody, who grown up playing Blizzard RTS games, I couldn't stand the charm of graphics and gameplay and bought the game. And my money were complete worth it.

Story and campaign:
Game brings player to the world of Loria, a kingdom of Order fighting the war against the armies of Chaos. We follow the adventures of one of the lords of Loria, meeting friends and enemies, finding our way through. The campaign consist of 16 missions, 8 for each race, and gradually introduces us to new units and increases in difficulty.

Graphics and UI:
Camera follows units from above bringing us to the setting of the early RTS games like WC 1,2 or Dune. Units are detailed and can be easily distinguished and are big enough to be selected. User interface unites best modern qualities with old-styled icons, the optimal mixture for this game, from my point of view.

Music and Voice acting:
Another major advantage of this game is the music and voice acting in the dialogs. From the first minute in the game, while listening to the intro, I followed the Dalt's character, his behavior and was right to expect much from game. During the gameplay, you can listen to the nice old-styled music, which brings that nostalgic feeling of epic.

Gameplay and units roster:
You have regular melee and ranged units as well as casters and heroes. Each unit has its attack and defense type making it strong or weak against others. Units can level up in the combat, what makes them more powerful and more valuable to you. Some of units are flyers and might cause a great problem if you are not ready, Heroes level up, obtain new abilities and characteristics, pick up items (similarly to WC3). Each race has different units and abilities, what gives player choice options. Unfortunately, game does not has multiplayer yet, but as far as I undersood, it is one of the milestones. Would be interesting to play against others.

Developers feedback:
It is cool to see, how developers react to players feedback and improve the game or discuss the possible ways of further game development. One great upvote for this.

Overall, I would recommend Loria. No meter if you like strategies, enjoy the oldscool epic or just want to try something new. Do it, open the world of Loria and will not regret it.

Loria is a love letter to Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3. Here's my review of the campaign:

Pros:
*Main character for the Order campaign, Dalt, has more charisma than any Warcraft character has ever had. Seriously, his personality and voice acting are fantastic.
*Game is decently balanced. Order has better heroes and has Clerics, whereas Chaos has tougher melee units and an overpowered endgame flyer in the Manticore. Chaos feels stronger overall, but not by much.
*There's decent mission diversity; go in and destroy the enemy bases, defend for X minutes, as well as a few missions where you need to carefully control a squad of units without a base. Difficulty is well balanced too.
*With a few exceptions (*cough* Corpse Explosion), hero skills are useful and fun to use.

Cons:
*Item system for heroes looks like it was added as an afterthought and mostly just offers some small stat boosts, there's no real depth to it.
*Quality Assurance drops down as you advance in the campaign, with the english getting somewhat more broken, and the quality and quantity of story and dialogue dropping sharply
*One significant balance pain point is towers and siege units; they're both pretty overpowered. In the first Chaos mission, where you don't get siege units and need to take down a base with towers, the only way I managed to succeed was by building offensive towers of my own, because my units were simply incapable of handling both the enemy units and the enemy towers together.
*The main Chaos hero has no personality or charisma and is a giant drag to play as after the delight of playing as Dalt in the Order campaign.

Verdict:
Loria is very much an indie title. If you play it through to the end, expect to see a fair amount of broken english, some small but significant balance problems, as well as some annoying bugs, like how buildings get cancelled and you get no resources refunded if you load a game where a building was in construction. In my case I even encountered one game-breaking bug which made me have to restart a stage because the stage objectives failed to load, and after destroying every single enemy building I realized I didn't have a win condition.

If you can look past those flaws, and you loved Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 like I did, I recommend you give this game a try. It scratched an RTS itch I had, and that's enough for me.

Like most RTS old school gamers I enjoyed Warcraft II back in the day, so this tribute to Blizzard’s masterpiece is a pleasant journey to the past. Have only just bought this game but I already really enjoy it. Harks back to Warcraft 2 (I really wish Blizzard would remaster that game dammit!)

Love the humor and the gameplay, again, a real classic formula which I love. The tilesets are so close to Warcraft 2 it's boardering on copyright infringement lol, but I really love the art style, just so good, and again, a classic looking game. Top down RTS has always been a favorite of mine.

Highly recommend this for anyone missing or wishing for the older Warcraft games. Blizzard is gonna lose out big if they don't remaster the older games.

Hope to play the Chaos missions someday. Awesome game! - OK I think that's enough Awesomes and Warcraft comparisons haha.

The game is so bad it's hard to even know which issues to write about. The bugs are numerous and annoying, the game-play "upgrades" from Warcraft 3 are horrendous and the price this is being sold for is just outrageous. I have no idea how they managed to fake the 90% "Very positive" score but the only reason one should consider buying this is a case study on bad game design. It is truly amazing how badly they messed up the game while making so few changes to the copied source material.

This game had so much promise, but it just doesn't cut it. From the screenshots you would think it is an awesome Warcraft 2 clone, but while that's what it aims to be, it misses the mark. My expectations were pretty low to begin with, I wasn't expecting much -- but this game did too many "bad things" in a short period of time. I played the game for roughly 40 minutes and in that time I encountered the following: Voice acting that interrupted itself several times (a new spoken sentence would start before one was finished), enemies in the starting area were able to perform ranged attacks through walls, the hero character disappeared and reappeared on the other side of an enemy in the middle of combat -- all of that combined with the fact you can't change the controls lead me to request a refund. I appreciate the passion that looks like went into making this game, but the execution is way off. Spend your money elsewhere.

Loria is a very good Warcraft 2 Clone with some exceptions.
U can buy or earn items for ur heroes, ur heroes can level up to a maxlvl of 10 like in Warcraft 3, u can upgrade ur heroes abilities and each hero has 3 specialattacks u can also upgrade.

The game has a nice campaign and Storyline. The only thing i really miss are some cutscenes like in Warcraft 2.
If u like Warcraft and Retrostrategygames 15 Euro are good invested.

I would give this a loose Recommendation and I mostly focused on the campaign, but overall it's still ok.

The main gripe I have with this game is that it feels extremely ridged mechanically. Your gold income is extremely fixed and enemy waves are also fairly predictable. As such, it feels like you are forced to turtle at the start of every game, only able to move out after they attack first. Also, trying to scout around is generally prohibited, as there's usually something that can easily overwhelm a scout or a small group. Moreover, since your gold income is fixed, any loses to your scouting group removes potential defenders once the enemy waves come in, forcing you to spend more gold re-enforcing everything.

To put it another way, it feels like there's a theoretical timer/"rubber-band-effect" between when you can move out & attack the enemy and when you have to defend. So, if you lose any units, that timer is extended, making a lot of this a waiting game unit you have a critical mass of units.

A possible but difficult feature to implement solution would be to remove the Warcraft 3 5-villager limit on the gold and change it to W2's unlimited number of clipping villagers collecting gold. This would change quite a bit, however with the W3's upkeep system in place, you still have to balance worker-to-military ratio, making a larger workforce viable but not overpowered.

I also would like to see higher amounts of gold in the mines, allowing for more leniency if your main attack force fails. While I've only gotten close to this scenario, I can easily see someone lose their army on a massive push and immediately afterwards, their gold mine runs out. They would have to restart the level, waiting through that theoretical timer again, which is frustrating.

One sentence summary: It's a solid Warcraft 2 cousin with Warcraft 3 elements that just needs a little more polish.

Honestly a great RTS Game all in all. The mechanics and controls are tailored to almost perfection!

I can't give a single wrong of a game that was tailored upon the Warcraft series. I feel this game even improves where Warcraft had issues!
If You like RTS games and are a fan of the Warcraft series, give Loria a spin, And you'll love it! :DDD

Great game, really enjoy it, would like more story's, more units, this gave me my RTS fix after blizzard gave up after warcraft 3. Waiting for more content in the future, perhaps more info about the hero's and some cinematic cut scenes would be nice.

Even though I have few hours in this game. And I possibly need to do a few more hours to give it a complete judgement call. I can say right now that I highly recommend this game to anyone that has a love for the Warcraft, or even the RTS and Fantasy Genre. As Loria is a perfect mix of the Warcraft gameplay and its own High Fantasy world.

However, I should inform that Loria is a bit buggy (Not game crashing, more like the AI Pathing gets a bit confused or doesn't obey the command straight a way) and still needs a few more features (like naval combat, more factions and Multiplayer). Although it made by a small team of developers and what they have done so far is really good.

Onto the good things that I think that should be highlighted. Loria captures the elements of the Warcraft humour and makes its own. The campaign (that I have done so far) is fun and very funny. Especially the main character from the Order campaign, The Iron Lord; whom reminds a lot of Captain Zapp Brannigan. Combat is just like Warcraft III. So nothing really new. It just a really fun game to play.

So if you have that old Warcraft or High Fantasy itch and want to support a indie company, buy this game. Also more players equals multiplayer and the new features.

I just purchased Loria to support the dev in hopes of multiplayer down the road. Initial first impressions are good! Hopefully Loria will see commercial success so we all can get the features we want implemented!

Small note: Even though I got this on sale, and not getting very far in the campaign, I believe the dev would sell a TON of copies of Loria if the sale price was closer to $5.00 (or $5.00 exactly). Just my .02.

Overall, I will play Loria, and more importantly, watch it grow over time!

Think Warcraft 2.5 starring the lovechild of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast and Zap Brannnigan from Futureama. It plays like a classic RTS with a great sense of humour to it.

While the tone and visual design of the game is something I enjoy greatly it falls apart when it comes to gameplay. It feels like you have to constantly fight with the game to get it to do what you want. It felt like there was a good game under all the troubles in controlling it. Unfortunately, that is where an RTS game should be its most solid.

Hazzini

I wanted to like it, but nostalgia alone is not enough to make it good or fun. The game is inspired by Warcraft 2 in the worst way. It takes the Blizzard storytelling approach of that era, meaning the writing and voice-acting are super cringey, the campaign plot is terrible, and all characters are unlikable cliches.

The mechanics are ported from WC3 with minimal improvements. It has the pointless stat system, it has creeps, abilities, leveling and items like WC3, with nothing new added. WC3 already exists and it has a lot more content and polish, so idk why this game feels the need to replicate it without adding anything.

There are only two races, but at least most of their units, heroes and abilities feel new and original. Discovering all the different units was the only reason I played this for as long as I did.

If you are really desperate for a game that's slightly better than WC2 but still much worse than WC3, give Loria a try, otherwise I cannot recommend it.

I'm halfway through the campaign now and so far the game is pretty enjoyable. I think, if you get this game, you know what you are getting into: a RTS that feels Warcraft-like. If you are into that, then you will enjoy that game. The game is a bit more than a straight-up clone, but at the same time it's recognizable that it tries to stay real close to the WC2.5-feeling. So don't expect any crazy innovative groundbreaking new stuff in terms of gameplay. But that's part of the selling-point, too, right? Especially as new RTS games have been increasingly scarce, it is refreshing and a bit nostalgic to play a game that feels close to the games that have inspired it. The campaign is challenging and the story above average and enjoyable with a nice bit of humor mixed in. I never regretted getting the game at any point. That said i encountered several bugs during my playthrough: sometimes units get stuck on walls, while reloading it cancels queued buildings and in a dungeon mission units attacked from the other side of the wall at one point. Nothing game-breaking, at least for a single player game. If the game wants to add multiplayer it will need to fix the unit-getting-stuck bug as well as change the balance a bit (to weaken tower-rushing, for example). I'm looking forward to see what the developers will add in the future.

NitroBlood_BringDaCake

Just bought the game.
It's good for most part, great nostalgic RTS warcraft feel with better graphics, optimized for modern resolution and better controls.
Very little is required to make it even bigger.
In my opinion:
Better terrain: trees, roads, rocks, map in general. no need to make it look old on purpose, just make it slightly better good looking. good looking trees, and not those narrow paths everywhere where only 1 unit can pass trough.
Next would be better unit collision and path finding and in-game customizable hotkeys.

Once that is taken care of, more heroes, another factions, expansion campaign and of course -MULTIPLAYER

A good idea unfortunately riddled with endless problems in execution:

- The biggest problem of all: No autosaves. Played a mission for over an hour, lost it and noticed with horror that the developers did not implement an autosave to save every 10-15 minutes, or at the very least after important checkpoints. I'm not going to waste my time by playing the entire mission again just because I made a mistake near its end. It is 2019 and there are still games coming out without regular autosaves. Whatisthisidonteven...

- Units are dumb af. That is fine for melee units, but any unit, no matter if builder or squishy mage will just rush headfirst into the enemy instead of trying to get away from melee if not a melee unit.

- Units do not return to their previous positions after attacking/repairing/etc.

- Most abilities cannot be set to autocast. During a battle with 40+ units, you just don't have the time to cast all abilities yourself, so they go to waste - the enemy AI doesn't have this problem, of course. Just you. Every ability should have an autocast, even if it is not as clever as a human would use it - better than going to waste.

- Default hotkeys are horrible. P for peasant, H for house and other nonsensical binds that would require a third hand next to the left & mouse hand to actually use them while playing the game without looking at the keyboard. Which leads to the next issue...

- Cannot rebind keys. This is a no-go for any game, but especially for a genre as hotkey intensive as RTS.

- Unit grouping only works randomly. More often than not, a shift+6 won't add units to group 6. Ctrl+number works, but shift+adding units works in maybe 20-30% of cases.

I really tried to like this game, but the truth is that it is just too lacking in features and execution to be recommendable. All of this is patchable, though, so who knows what the future will bring.

Unfortunately, the reliance on mouse controls makes it unable for me to play this without placing incredible strain on my hand. Any modern game has the option to control "clicks" with the keyboard, using the mouse only as pointer - from DotA 2 to Path of Exile to Starcraft 2. I cannot play this game and neither should you if your hand gets easily strained from RSI.

In fact, the game doesn't have control customization at all on its barebones settings page, which definitely feels subpar.

It's a shame, I'd really like to properly try this game out without hurting myself in the process of enjoying it. Dev please...?

Fun campaign, a real throwback. Music is pretty good. Voiceacting is great. This is a really solid RTS.

That's the upside; here are a few downsides:

UI leaves a lot to be desired, particularly the ability to rebind command keys.

AI is a little derpy. Pathing can be downright terrible at times.

Overall, 7/10.
Get it if you like classic Warcraft. I got it on sale, and haven't regretted it.

I love RTS games, I remember my dad bringing home WarCraft 1 when I was a kid and I've played nearly every one I could get my hands on. This games is a throwback mix of WC2 and WC3 with traditional unit design, hero units like WC3 as well as WC3's economic model. The writing is probably the game's strongest point, it is so tongue and cheek and hilariously well written. The visual design is clear and easy to read and the two factions are distinct enough.

Having said all that, and there is a lot of good, I cannot recommend the game. There are two big reasons for that. The first reason is the pathfinding and unit AI. I know this is a throwback to an older time but units behave even worse than they did back in the early 90's. On any map with ramps I knew I'd be in for a slog because the pathing is just so bad that you'd never get your army up the ramp in a timely pace. I lost many a map (especially the final missions of each faction in the campaigns) when my maxed out army was waiting to engage and I give the order and they'd either studder step, get caught on edges, not move at all and by the time it was all over my army was slowly bled out because they couldn't get up the ramp. Ramps, and possibly your own units, are a bigger enemy than the actual enemy.

The second issue is the mission design. While there are a few fun ones with ally AI that you need to time your attacks together but for the most part each and every mission has the same plan "max out, destroy one enemy base. Remax and repeat for the next hour." It is, again, a nod to the design of the older games but that doesn't make it fun or well designed. Most missions were me just waiting to get maxed out so I could go destroy a single enemy base (most later missions feature 3-4 bases), attacking and then waiting again to remax.

I love the homage to older games, the writing is probably among the most fun I've heard in a game in years, and the graphics are tight but I can't recommend the game because of those two big issues. I wanted to overlook them, I tried, but each game I started up I just felt dread that I would be wasting my time and that I'd be frustrated. It isn't often that I feel like I don't ever want to log into a game again, and Loria isn't all bad, just the experience is so hard to deal with I don't think I will try it until a patch hits.

Value metric: Does it have a value of $1 per hour of gameplay? Yes

Even tho its kinda rough around the edges Loria is at the very least a fun throwback RTS, god knows those are rare these days even with its flaws for a low price its great for RTS fans and even with its full price it still delivers a decently lengthy campaign even withouth MultiPlayer functionality.

One of the bigger problems id say is unit pathfinding at times and especially with thight areas it can be difficult to get a large ammount of units through and even tho there are some decently diffrent units between the factions for the most part they feel like they play the same withouth any hugely uniqe mechanics and at times even with upgrades things feel a tad bit too slow in terms of stuff like regenrateing mana and health.

On a personal note and this really is a nitpick i am kinda dissapointed by the lack of a full ending cutscene much like the intro. I know this is a indie game but one would think that much like the beginning one could afford some extra sketches for the ending. Lack of outro's / endings ends up makeing a game feel kinda anticlimactic when it goes to the credits. But im gonna give the game points by kinda haveing one with a in game cutscene.

Overall a fun throwback to a time when RTS games were everywhere.

The game is almost unplayable early on even at the easiest setting. I've played all the command and conquer games, all of the Warcraft games even the originals. This looks like a carbon copy of warcraft but it's no fun when you can't get an attack in without being over whelmed from each side far too consistently. I'm no longer interested in this game.

It is a enjoyable Warcraft 2 Tides of Darkness style game. It is a bit basic and the story is too cheeky and a bit D&D at times but it is all enjoyable honestly. I am learning to build a game like this currently as the RTS genre and especially the fact that these can be turned into large scale (for fun) games interests me. Keep on rocking !

The time has come - Finally I'm reviewing this game, after many times I wanted to do it but I wasn't ready. Even though I don't have many hours in this game, because most of the time I played it offline, I have an opinion about it.

About the game

Well, Loria is a homage to classics from golden era of strategy games, with modern spin on controls and user experience. Game introduces not just RTS elements but also RPG elements such as: hero units, collecting items and quest driven missions offers for a more interesting take on the RTS genre.

First impression

To be honest, the first time when I saw the trailer I was already excited about the game. The graphics, the gameplay, the story already captured me. Also, Loria brought me some nostalgia. It reminded me of the great times when I was a kid, when I was playing Warcraft 2 and 3, and Loria have the characteristics of these two legendary games, that sadly was ruined by the actually Blizzard staff.

Yes, if you played Warcraft 2, you will instantly see a similiraty.

Pros

For a 2D game, the graphics is amazing. The gameplay is clean, it have Warcraft 3 mechanics. If you are a beginner or veteran RTS player, it will be easy for you to play Loria, is simple. Also, the campaign is very impressive and everyone should play it. In Skirmish you can have a lot of fun, you have custom maps and also you can create your own maps!

Cons

Did I say cons? Nah, I was wrong. The sad thing is that Loria is a underrated game. Loria deserve more attention, it has a great potential.

Conclusion

If you are a old-school RTS player, like me, Loria is a good choice. It has all the characterics that you want to see in a good RTS game.

Nowadays we don't see anymore good RTS games, like StarCraft, Warcraft III, Command and Conquer or many others and we should appreciate the work of the developers that are trying to bring back the good old times.

This is possibly the most bland and un-entertaining game I have played in a very long time. It may be billed as a homage to Warcraft but it has taken all the personality of those games, thrown it in the bin and replaced it with absolutely nothing. The pathing in this game is beyond insane bordering on the sadistic; seriously, a good portion of the time half your troops don't move at all or decide the best way to move 4ft back to your base is to run halfway round the map through the enemy base rather than just walk 4ft directly to your base. All the maps are the same; turtle, upgrade, shift-A. I am on map 7 of the first campaign, which apparently has 8 maps, and that is all I have done. I played all the original Warcraft games and they has so much more..... everything than this. In fact, I think despite the fact that the are now over 20 years old I would rather be playing them than this. Retro gaming seems to be the flavour of the month at the moment and I have no issue with that, I bought this game after all, but I didn't expect it to play worse than games i played over 20 years ago. Thankfully I picked this up on sale for £5 and I can afford to waste £5 however I wish I had bought a kebab instead.

I just finished the campaign. The gameplay was servicable as was the story. Didn't really end on a high note and the whole experience had several annoying recuring bugs. I did enjoy myself but i don't see myself playing this ever again.

good warcraft clone, buuuuut theres no multiplayer, so kinda disappointed, the fresh visuals were nice touch, the the developers arent really supporting the game, so I dont know if it will even have multiplayer. Good game but I'm kinda left feeling it could be more.

[Redacted]

Thanks for responding to my drunk jumble of a review, I really appreciate it and I retract my statement of saying you don't care about this game, perhaps saying I do not recommend it is a harsh conclusion to make. Yet I still do have a point, yes if multiplayer was integral to my game experience I wouldn't have bought it. I still love your game without multiplayer, maybe I should say, that I feel I long for more. I have read your description and watched many walkthroughs/reviews on your game before buying it, I remember you saying if you had enough backers you implement a multiplayer to the game, which obviously hasn't happened yet right? So I would go on as to say that game was not hugely popular at launch? Perhaps what I should have suggested I maybe, regular updates or at least, an update? I know its easy for me say, I'm sure you are wondering "What in bloody hell should I update?". Maybe in other more in depth reviews I would say the exact thing that particularly needs to be improved, which is a surprise to me still why you chose to comment on mine nonetheless, again honored. But I do feel like if the problem is that people aren't paying enough attention to this game, that clearly me and a lot of other people in the review section are passionate for, maybe we should find a way to draw more people in such as expansive workshop updates, or a new race, or new mode? I feel that would really spice up that beautiful game of yours and you'll get up to that multiplayer number you needed in no time. Again sorry if you felt I was not giving you game a fair review, for that was not my intention, I have severely edited my original review so not to seem as uninformed.

If you're looking for an homage to the WarCraft franchise by Blizzard Entertainment, namely two of the best entries to WarCraft's RTS trilogy, then Loria is the game for you. The game looks and feels a lot like WarCraft 2: Tides of Darkness but plays largely like WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos. It's the best of both with the weaknesses of neither. There are some minor technical hiccups but overall, Loria is exactly the homage one could hope for. So if you're looking for a great game, looking for a substitute for a classic Blizzard title, or whatever, this game should be strongly considered.

There is no modern spin on controls and user experience... It feels and plays like an old game with all the flaws. The design is quite lazy, predictable and boring. I managed to finish 3 missions of the campaign and unfortunately I was bored to death despite the fact that I love RTSes.

Ducky

It's a pretty solid game and hitting the old RTS nostalgia feels.

The campaign mode isn't too bad... you are able to choose your difficulty. However, if you try the hardest, prepare yourself for long dragged out scenarios. The dialogue is kinda cheesy (if you are into that) and the story a bit cringy (again, if you are into that).

Gameplay is good but not without bugs. The main ones you need to look out for is a few path-finding issues like getting stuck in walls or deciding to go the long way around. (TIP: If a unit is stuck, try move spamming them away from the wall or quick-save then reload). Another one is don't save while a building is in construction. When you load the save state it doesn't record the building and you lose your resources for it.

One mechanic I liked and want to point out is that most units can level up. This made me deliberately protect high levelled units over others to try keep an advantage. Furthermore, I would try and time the level up in order to restore the unit's health back in a fight.

The sad thing about this game is that there is no multiplayer yet. Hopefully the game gets an update to make that possible.

Nope, it's just nostalgia cash grab. First of all, this is complete WC1/WC2 ripoff. They tried to clone is as much as the could without getting sued. I don't mind it that much and it was their goal to clone old school RTS gameplay but they could have been at least slightly original in graphics department. As for gameplay, you get what you pay for. An old school RTS gameplay but here again if its just a clone of actually good games so I expect gameplay to be cloned flawlessly. Nope, pathing is not very good, units get stuck and cannot unstuck quite often. There are few other bugs too.
Honestly, with all above in mind I cannot think of any reason why would you buy this game instead of original classics on GOG...

Ayhomaru
Ayhomaru

I regret not reading the reviews more thouroughly before buying. The game does have nice Warcraft 2 vibe. They claim the game is with "..with modern spin on controls and user experience". That is only partially true. Unit pathfinding is still as bad as it was in Warcaft 2 (sometiems even worse, the units get stuck and cannot move). Units get stuck if you issue commands to quickly etc.

Story is not bad but the missions itself are quite boring. You basically just destroy enemy bases or defend for some period of time.

The game is also quite difficult. It is definitely not a relaxing RTS. You need to conquer your enemy and expand very quickly or you'll run out of gold. Enemy usually have multiple bases that reinforce each other (most of the time).

Even on Normal the AI is very aggressive and always optimally targets your damaged units and uses the proper counters. Every engagement is challenging and you will need to load often as one lost battle many times means lost missions due to lack of resources (especially gold). I have requested a refund and got my money back

Loria's fun for a while, but the main issue- beyond some polish issues campaign-wise- is that it's far too similar to its inspirations to show any new initiative or anything truly interesting.

If you like RTS games, particularly from the Golden Era of RTS games, it's perfectly fine and fun to sink a few hours into, but it's a very niche sort of thing.

Where to start with Loria?
Lets talk about the Nostalgia value here. I grew up with Warcraft 1, enjoyed the days of Warcraft 2 BNE and had my fun with Warcraft 3.
If you grew up with any of these games you wont be disappointed at first glance. You get the dungeon crawling of Warcraft 1, a fleshed out campaign, The maps and familiarity of Warcraft 2 and the Heroes and strategy of Warcraft 3. The units are fleshed out and well balanced. The AI is reasonable and can be difficult to combat, especially on the hard difficulty and the game is just so easy to jump into and have a good time.
There are some faults however that made the experience a little less satisfying. The game lacks some polish in some areas, there are little bugs or knit picky things that make it difficult to enjoy and give it little replay value. Lets start with the map editor. The map editor clearly states its in beta so that isn't a problem. It has potential, you have the ability to recreate your favourite maps from Warcraft 2 and throw in those elements that make Warcraft 3 unique and enjoyable to create a fun experience. However, the map editor itself is broken, whilst you can create these maps when you go to play them or publish them to the steam workshop, they are broken and you are unable to play them. The start locations do not work and place all units and buildings on-top of one another, completely breaking the game and making any custom map unplayable.
There are numerous other little knit picky things such as the unit cap being set to 120 and using Warcraft 3's population system. Whilst some might see this as a way to balance the game, its nonadjustable and feels really limiting in games with a large map or multiple AI to defend against.
There are numerous bugs and clipping issues with the units. Some get stuck in trees and buildings, others just stand still for no reason and wont do anything. If you have too many units trying to use a building at once then all units and the building because stuck and cant be used. There are a number of other little things that start to show after a few hours into the game.
The big deal breaker for a lot of people however would probably be the multiplayer, or lack there of.
That said, Loria is a fun experience that you can come back and sing 40 minutes into every now and then. I don't believe the asking price is fair for the features that are left unattended too, and it appears the game has been abandoned, and that's a shame because there is so much potential here for this to be a really good modern equivalent of the classic Warcraft games with its own unique twist. The voice acting is spot on, the units and gui are easy to navigate and use. Theres just so much more work to give it the polish it needs.
My recommendation would be, try the demo out and if you enjoy that then wait until the game comes on sale and pick it up for $5-$8. I'll keep an eye on this and update my review if things change, however for now its a fun little time killer if you have 40 minutes. Theres a lot of charm, and love that has gone into it. Its just not yet a finished game.

Kudos to the devs for the fantastic job done and the single player experience it offers.

Toadragon

When the price of a game falls or there are big discounts, it is because it is bad or old. But when it gets free it's the worst.
The story is short with a boring ending.
The balance in the campaign is a complete joke.
Full of bugs.
Even when I leave the game, it shows me every time that it stopped incorrectly.
Soldiers get hooked or don't move properly.
They push each other whenever they want.
There is a long distance and they still can't pass each other.
The limit of the soldiers is quite small.
The mana runs out quickly and everything requires quite large quantities.
The enemy can do damage with a small army while you need a fairly large army. From which you can lose soldiers quite quickly.
The enemy is evolving faster than you and the soldiers have improved even though you have the same.
The character in the beginning is very weak and almost useless without some skills.
Save in the game is like a lotto. Example. I build buildings, turn on the save they are destroyed. Or the enemy decides to strike elsewhere I feel like he knows where I am.
Pros no achievements.
Skarmisha feels a little better, you're not as slow as in the campaign.
This game is abandoned.
They gave up to continue another game. They didn't do this properly, they will do another.
Too bad because the game had potential.
Looks like Warcraft and the army of Exigo . But it just looks like .
There are problems like the old game.
I tried to get my money back, I know it's too late, but he also wrote that there are consumption things and I used them.
When they decided to make it for free, they made fun of everyone who gave money for it.

Beautiful game, the people who worked on it are amazing. The only thing that would make this game perfect is a multiplayer mode.

I'm the voiceover guy who did all the voices for all the 'male' voice range characters. About 25 in total. It was super fun. Special nerd love because I was obsessed with the Warcraft games.

A pleasant small game combining elements of Warcraft 2 and 3 gameplay that is now free and can offer relaxing small breaks from work. Personal suggestion, the base game can be expanded and developed greatly with content updates or an expansion instead of a Loria 2. Wish luck to the developer for all future projects!
