2K is a fascist company. Not only it ceased operations in Russia for political reasons, it also discriminates against Russians. It doesn't even allow us to take a game for free, which clearly shows that the whole "We're against Russian government, not against common people" statement is an utter lie.
When you discriminate against an entire nation, that makes you a nazi.

Don't support nazis, don't do business with 2K.

Due to the fact this game recently celebrated 20th anniversary, and the whole franchise aswell, i decided i have to review one of my most favourite games of all time.

20 years. 20 years ago, Illusion Softworks and Mr. Daniel Vávra have released one of the best mobster/30s gangster games ever.
It's atmosphere is unmatched even today, storytelling has twists and emotional contest, where a person is really feeling the tension and understands the story, of taxi ex-driver and mobster Tommy Angelo and his climbing to the top of the criminal life.
This absolute masterpiece was released 29th of August, 2002. Graphics were top class for that era, physics model for vehicles were sublimal and combination of soundtrack, composed by Czech Symphonic Orchestra (ČSO as for Český Symfonický Orchestr), written by Vladimír Šimůnek and main dirigent Adam Klemens will set you on rollercoaster of emotions.
Especially for my favourite mission "Visiting Rich People" and "A Trip to Country" has amazing vibe that I won't forget when i was just a child. I first played this Czech national treasure when i was just 7 years old, graphics had me speechless, cars were incredibly fun to handle and it's gameplay hooked me up for incredibly long time when i was struggling to get past hard missions, during cold evenings.

Music, that is following you through locations and missions, has indeed the 20s/early 30s feeling. And i am hard enthusiast for any kind of well written soundtrack, tracks and songs.
Main story and characters are incredibly well written, for the time following of 10 years timelapse.

Gameplay and car behaviour is seriously breathtaking how they managed to do that 20 years back, most games nowadays (even singleplayer ones), can't even get the shifting and gas consumption correct, while a title from 2002 wasn't afraid to show. Only game i can think of that has superior physics is Half-Life 2.

At the end of your journey through possibly crying from last words said by your former best friend, is a message that i still remember till this day followed by sad violins.
"You know, I think it's important to keep a balance in things. Yeah, balance, that's the right word. Because the guy who wants too much risks losing absolutely everything. Of course, the guy who wants too little from life, might not get anything at all."

Then, if you are feeling up to challenge, there's Extreme Ride, which will test your skills and your patience (seriously i never completed it myself).
Also if you would feel that graphics may be little bit outdated for your eyes, you can also find great mods improving textures, shaders, lighting and more. My personal recommendation is Community Modpack on Moddb.
Oh and for the record, they remade this jewel 2 years ago, but as i said myself "You can't remake to make an already legendary title."

    And for my final score?
    10/10. Period.
Best mafia related title to date.
    Amazing places and missions.
    Unmatched atmosphere.

One of the best games of all time, it is worth a shot even if you don't like GTA. It is much better than the definitive edition. Don't forget to dowload and add the old music mod so you can enjoy the whole stuff, it really needs it for the authentic feeling.

A person becomes a Don because of his thirst for power, and he doesn't care about any other rules than his own. That's how it is, detective. So he'd be his own boss, independent of the police, of the state, of anyone. That's why a person becomes a Don.

Despite the age of this game (20 years old now, wow) I feel it still holds up extremely well. The pace of the game is very slow in comparison to other open-world games that were out at the time (GTA III as an example) but I feel that gives this game its own identity, and I love it. It helps (well, it helps me at least) digest what's going on in the game, along with all the characters a lot more easily. Which brings me to another thing I love about this game; the characters.

Every single one of them feels extremely unique and fleshed out; my personal favourite being Don Salieri. Everything about him just feels perfect. A long with his friend, Frank Colleti; even though they're just characters in a game you can feel/tell that they have had a life-long friendship.

Though this game is by no means perfect. There a definitely a lot of missions that make me want to pull my hair out (the infamous racing mission for example...) and a lot of mechanics and other things that feel questionable at best (like the AI; sometimes it's absolutely amazing given the age of this game, but other times it feels so braindead) but I can move past these flaws since the rest of the game feels so amazing to me.

If you have never played Mafia before, I highly recommend it! Though I would advise downloading mods that restore the original soundtrack and other ones that modernise the game a little (mods that clean up the HUD and menus, ones that extend the view distance etc...) this game feels quite empty without the soundtrack, and it's just nice to listen to Django Reinhardt while you're driving around Lost Heaven.

A classic. I remember playing this on PS2 and Xbox. The PC version is FAR superior to console as far as graphics are concerned, and there are subtle changes to the dialogue in some cutscenes. The Free Ride Extreme mode is PC-exclusive, and worth having for a fun side activity.

Mafia has a very well-written story, and memorable characters. The voice acting is good, especially for the main cast. Mafia is a very linear game, so if you like sandbox, might not be for you, but if you enjoy playing through a story-line, you won't be disappointed. I would definitely recommend for anyone who has only played the newer Mafia titles - this is the one that started it all.

A masterpiece of a game. Mechanics are a bit iffy but what can you expect from a game released in 2002. Some bugs here and a couple of crashes there but overall enjoyable to play through, a highlight being the race mission. One thing I would remove however would be the speed limit, made travelling across the map multiple times in quick succession very boring.

The grandaddy Mafioso is still a good blast to play if you look past the meagre checkpoints the game gives you, rolling you back almost an entire mission. The jank doesn't help, coupled with the enemies pinpoint accuracy and a certain racing mission that can induce severe pain to your wrist when you slam it on the desk. I have almost 22 hours and a good portion of it was just restarting missions

But the way this game presents the story is a million times better than the remaster. I will sit through any bullshit Mafia 1 throws at me because it has a very good story, told in a simple and effective way. It's raw, the movement, the gunplay, the cars but it's authentic and true to it's time

It's still very good, but there's a couple of mods you may need to download for Resolution scaling or QoL improvements

First off, don't buy this game if you're not prepared to play a 20+ years old game. This game has aged. Instead, you're probably better off getting the Mafia Definitive Edition, which is the same game but with differing details, in modern graphics and in general more streamlined, familiar and conventional gameplay.

If you are prepared to play an old game, then yes, I will absolutely recommend this game! There is so much to say, so to prevent me from rambling an essay-worth, I will give a positives and negatives list.

    Positives
+ It's insane how in-depth the car (driving) mechanics are for a game from 2002, I honestly think it is more complex than most games nowadays. There is manual and automatic transmission control, engine braking, suspension modelled on each tire, overheating, dynamic car damage (damage responds to which part of the car is hit), fuel (leaking), odometer, different types of wheel drive (all four, front, or back wheels), you can enter a car from any door, and so much more.
+ Following previous point, car driving is also simply a blast. There are a ton of cars, from trucks to whacky hotrods. For 2002 graphics, the cars look pretty good as well. The first cars you receive are weak, underpowered vehicles that have trouble hitting the speedlimit or climbing hills, while later cars are much stronger and sturdier. The sounds of the engines spinning are also amazing. The developers originally wanted to make a driving game instead of a Mafia game, which definitely shows! So yeah, the driving is good and awesome!
+ The story is great and engaging. The characters are also diverse and believable, and not all straight forwarded. There are some points I think the Definitive Edition does better (more character detail), while other points I think the original does better. Anyway, playing the game will almost feel like you're watching a novel about the mob in 1930s.
+ The missions are all varied and fun to play. They are certainly not forgettable! You'll have the good old shoot-outs, but in other missions you have to play more stealthy, or play as a race coureur, taxi driver, or be an assassin to assassinate some corrupt politicians. The missions and the story do not drag out, and you can be done with the story within 10 hours, if you play fast.
+ Some people dislike the shooting, but I think it's actually pretty good. Recoil is hefty and you can't just stand in the open and spray and pray. You have to be more tactical and actually save ammo, and enemies can be quite lethal. Muzzle flash is pretty cool and looks realistic, just as the sounds of the guns. If you reload, you will actually lose the remaining rounds in the magazine. The bullets you fire and the magazines you drop when reloading actually fall to the ground and stay there, just at that of your enemies. Blood and death animations are also good.
+ Mafia I is known for its attention to details. A lot of missions can be played in a variety of ways, there are hidden secrets, small and realistic details, and a lot of more. It awards to replay a mission to check out the map and other stuff.
+ Although people from more open-world type of games might dislike it, Mafia 1 has a police force that enforces traffic laws, such as a speedlimit, driving on the right side of the road, not going through red. I think it is a neat feature and makes the world more immersive. Also, you don't really want to mess with the police in this game, they're stronger than in say GTA or later Mafia games. Unless you have a really fast car, outrunning the police is very difficult.
+ The music is nice and you will feel attached to the 30s period. It does require a mod however, as the original music soundtrack was removed from Steam because of copyright issues. I recommend downloading this mod, takes maybe 2 minutes.
+ The City of Lost Heaven feels unique and looks beautiful (especially with maximum render distance). Every neigborhood is different and has its own theme. You can also take the tram or the train and travel the city that way, which is really cool.

    Negatives
    - The only real negative is the voice acting. At least the English one, as I have heard that the voice acting in other languages was better. There are only a handful of voice actors, and at best they sound like they're bored. It's weird and stupid to hear Tommy speak in a non-interesting, bored way when he was just under fire in a life or dead situation. Something the Definitive Edition massively improved. Nevertheless, some characters' voices are fine.
    - The AI can be retarded. In some missions, you have Sam and Paulie at your side, but more often than not they are more of a liability than a helpful companion. They'll run straight into grenades, enemies, etc. And if they die, the mission fails. So you have to kind of baby sit them.
    - It's an old game, so this can be accepted, but sometimes the time between checkpoints is long, meaning if you die you will have to redo the part of 15 minutes ago. And trust me, you will die quite a few times.

All in all, this game is amazing. I definitely recommend it if you're willing to look past its age!

I am a 53 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single farther to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.
