This game is abandoned and not received any new updates since October 2021. Has massive game play issues things as simple as getting stuck on the environment constantly. Loosing progress and even loosing your entire save file. For a game in early access for multiple years it only had 1 quest which was very buggy and nothing more. The game appears to be abandoned and steam should remove it. That being said I do love the look and feel of the game, it has so much potential sad it has met this fate.

really good so far...exactly what we needed while waiting for diablo 4...and it really does a good job of putting both diablo and dark souls together...there are a bunch of glitches,

Have high hopes for this. Love the slower pace and darker theme of it.
Very rough around the edges and clunky, but things that are nothing more than time sinks and will be smoothed out in the future.
Def. worth keeping an eye on.

Things I like about games: Cool drops and fun fights. Strategy, Smooth game play.
Things I hate: Stuck in stunned stupor, bad mapping, monsters that can 1 shot all the time when I cannot 1 shot at all. The feeling like I am going to keep hitting a wall again and again unless I slowly grind to a level way above where I should be to pass an obstacle.

At the moment I cast and I am stunned into stupor where I am 1 shotted by a mob that is about my level and loading! If relaxation and exploration is going to be more work and less fun than my actual work then it is not a good getaway and I am not enjoying. 1. Fix mapping so I am not stuck in the middle of fields or around the side of the blacksmith and have to die or reload. 2. Make mob fights more fair at about your level. 3. Make it so that you do not have to save waaaay back there in order to level up enough to go forward...then have to fight through the same mobs over an over again to get to the next save spot. If I wanted to play Sekiro or Dark Souls and liked S&M in my life then I would just go do those things...Please fix this as I like some of the rest of the game and would like it to open up and be fun to play...

very good game, beautiful graphics, a mixture of diablo 2, dark souls an poe, very dark, I loved this game hopefully the developer does not give up on this masterpiece, because this game has a lot of potential!!!!

be aware this game made my gpu wich runs normally not hotter then 70 degrees going up to 78 degreees in the main menu already very strange if you ask me i fixed that by lowering the effects to low

movement and combat actually felt good but the devs did the same nonsense as the guys from last epoch they separated move and attack so you move with left and attack with right click

idk why some devs think they have to change things wich worked since at least 2 decades but ok thats not all the game also forces you to farm the same enemys over and over in the same locations to get somewhere else

this is because its not your standart arpg its a mix of souls and poe i would say so what you do is kill the spiders go to town rest them at fire kill again and again and again

well some farming is ok but this here is insane after 30 minutes of spider killing i had enough (like with victor vran) yeah sure you can lure skeletons into the town guard but yeah i say it as it is i have better games to do

i may take a look at it in a year or so

Fun game. Cant wait til the bugs are worked out and new content is added, current level cap is 25. Crafting is fun.

I only played a bit of Malus but since it's EA and Alpha, stated that this is just for the player to know the concept and combat style, i'll write a review.

For me, THIS is the true Diablo replacer we were looking after so many time!

The combat will feel clunky at the begining, but after you get to it, it is really cool!
Every weapon has a different play style, but you'll be dodging all the time, especially to know the attack patterns of the opponents. Being greedy and trying to hit without dodge will get you killed easily.
Bow needs a quiver, and knockback enemy. It is slow but does good damage.
Staff has a very neat attack sequence and explode on enemy, but you must dodge when enemy gets close.

Really, combat is punishing but also very interesting, and tactical. You must plan how you'll fight on the go.
Graphics are so beautiful, the model is also very detailed!!! Love it!

All in all, i have HIGH HOPES for this one.

JUST REMEMBER, THIS IS EARLY ACCESS.
Don't buy a game without reading what it is about and the state of the current build.
Some games are released in EA almost done, others are in early states of development.

If you buy a game on EA, it is to SUPPORT THE DEV mostly, not to get a polished and fully functional game.
Don't be that person that buy an EA game and then say it is lacking features. Please don't.

With that said, the game is on the damn right track. I expect 2 years for this to really leave EA and get finished, with a decent main quest and all features. Whole pandemic situation surely slowed it down.

I'll try it a bit more and patiently wait for updates.

Early Access disclaimer states the game is not finished; no kidding! Game play is unique alright, you can't see. Do not waste your time at this point.

This is a no for me. Has so much potential but there is zip in regard to skills. All the items that drop are above your current level. The save system is garbage. You must rest at a camp fire to save anything, XP progression, what you bought, etc. It is a cheap way to add "difficulty" to the game. Sure, Dark Souls had the fact you lost your souls and had to pick it up, this game has none of that. Enemies are much stronger than you and stupid fast. I have to wait for them to attack and then roll twice only to be able to have enough time to attack once. Again, very promising but needs A LOT of work.

TOTALLY worth the 3 bucks i paid for it. Dont get into this expecting anywhere near to a complete game. The game starts with a screen saying this is an unfinished product. It is the bare bones of a demo, but its like staring at the bones of fucking greatness. Please develop this concept into a finished game so you can take more of my money lol!

Game is very much in alpha state. Despite some stop and starting, very smooth, and has a significant amount of polish for something so early. It 100% has issues and is pretty simple atm; but is already pretty cheap and worth the potential. It's certainly not Diablo 2 (yet) and is 10x more smooth than Diablo 1.

HighOfTheTiger
HighOfTheTiger

This game has so much potential, and I can't wait to see what it becomes down the road! Looking at the negative reviews, it seems there are 2 main complaints. First being bugs/unfinished game. To that, it is advertised as an early alpha work in progress to showcase the combat. Secondly, I've read complaints about it being too hard. This isn't Diablo 3, where you explode screenfulls of colorful enemies with crit numbers littering the screen and unique and legendaries showering the ground as you spam rainbows of spells and spin to win. This is a dark, difficult, tactical combat based ARPG. It really does feel like a Souls game but from a isometric ARPG point of view. You will die, you will probably have to grind some levels to get through certain areas, and you can't really rely on loot to carry you through. Its very demanding of player skill, and does not hold your hand at all.

What to expect: Currently its pretty short. I beat the available content in a couple hours at level 18. I will absolutely be replaying it, likely many times. Even though there isn't an abundance of content, its a breath of fresh air to have this type of gameplay in an ARPG with the others in the genre being basically mini clones of each other.

There are some bugs. The worst I encountered being a movement glitch that makes your character move incredibly slow and is only fixed by starting over. It happened once at level 5, and I restarted. It happened again at level 18 when I was in the final area, and made the final boss (who is already fairly difficult) even more so.

The game is difficult, but the power increase per level feels significant, and it seems you're usually only a level or two below being able to handle the next zone more easily. If you're getting wrecked, just spend a little time grinding a couple levels and it should really help. Most of the campfires are close enough to enemies that you can do this fairly quickly if you map out a route and repeat.

Overall, would highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys Diablo style games, and anyone who enjoys the tougher tactical combat of the souls like games. Again, this is very early in development, but for the price, it is well worth supporting the developer because this could be one of the better ARPGs made in a long time when its finally done!

I am glad that I have supported this game.
It feels different in the best way. Combat is great. The small glimpse of the world we are experiencing at this moment is inspirational. Also, the game feels realistic, which is something that appeals to me and many others I hope. Overall, a game with great potential.

Below are my honest recommendations on how can this game improve:

1. Combat can have some improvements and polish, more specifically: quick response on in and out of combat animations (if you are running and want to engage enemy quickly you end up hitting them before able to draw your weapon in time); sometimes it is harder to dodge in the direction you want to. Circling around enemy should be more fluid I think, while remain realistic, of course.
2. Pathing. The overall movement through terrain should more fluid. I know that this has been addressed already and you are working on it.
3. Focus on small details first before going big. What I mean is that it is better to work on improve the
overall immersion and makes the world feels more alive, more engaging, more charismatic and unique. Some suggestions: Finding a corpse of a man under a tree. He was wearing an important note ; Finding a small cave with a relic inside ; Passing by a man hanging on a tree ; Wild animal that seems to follow you ; Ancient scrip on a rock ; Feeding a dog in the village ; having a sit and a drink and perhaps a random chat with a stranger in the local village tavern and etc.
3.1. I hope to see day and night cycles and weather change.
3.2. Every building and room should have a history inside, do not leave any rooms empty. Add furniture, scattered books, locked chests and etc.
4. Small random events that involve main character and NPCs: Villages get attacked by the monsters ; A small trading caravan traveling to the nearest town ; Adventurer who want's to hire you for assistance with traveling to near ruins and obtaining some treasure and etc.

I hope to see some of the mentioned features in the future and that this game turns into something really special.

While having never played Dark Souls and only played Diablo 3 in that series, I didn't really know what to expect. At first it was frustrating because I had the mentality to hack n slash like for example one of my all time favorites, Sacred 1 and 2 the 3rd is well...a turd in my opinion. But I love the atmosphere in this game and the graphics are excellent. Story wise, well I haven't gone far enough in the game 'cause even after 5 hrs I've died a lot :D but it still captivated and motivated me to find out more...Where does that bloody trail lead to? The approach is somewhat different with combat than your usual games of this type but not impossible to learn. Once you've reached the village and gotten your first quest go and save by the campfire if you haven't already and venture back South to kill more spiders since it will help in finding more useful and better armour/weapons and of course to level up before moving on. You can also buy and sell at the blacksmith. Anyways, other than saving frequently not sure what to say at the moment, been playing almost 4 hrs and it's now almost 8:30 am...I'm falling asleep at my computer and if it wasn't for that I'd still be playing, so yes I recommend this to all fans of this genre. Thank you and goodnight/morning wherever you are.

EDIT 2: This has been abandoned. Do not buy.

EDIT: Okay, still can't recommend but it is indeed getting there. For now the world is empty in a LOT of places. The cave quest.... don't get me started on the nightmare that empty shell is. Get ready for a one shot when you finally find your way.

No game memory, if you spend hours trying to navigate somewhere, and get one shot, you lose everything.

Movement is coming along, I don't completely hate it. Just a little.

Still have hope for this.

Old review:

Horrible movement, hold left mouse button down. Very difficult to make for meaningful movement. Wait for controller support. But do come back later, looks pretty neat.

Faaaar from anything close to finished game, more like demo.

Hardest thing in this game is it's very start. And balance is of course all over the place.
However, this game can teach AAA devs a thing or two about atmosphere.
Also, combat is a bit clunky, but still a lot of fun.

It should be approached with open mind and a bit of patience.

Super nice hack and slash game - it is a little bit hard in the beginning of the game, but later when you find out about the game, then you find out how super cool the game is - I have played it for about 4 hours now and find it super nice, the game bring backs the memory of the good old hack and slash Diablo game - the hole environment about the game is cool and a nice story, many different enemies and cool loot - but when you play the game you have to be a little bit more Strategic about your moves, don´t hush it and you will die :) over all a good game to a good price..

Timecrash

This game is EXTREMELY Early Access but it has a lot of potential. The combat is weightier and more deliberate than your usual Diabloclone. Having a more Dark Souls system works out great for making the game feel distinct and interesting. Even having blocking and weapon sheathing makes the game more immersive. The ambient music is also great.

What problems I have with this game are 100% because it's still early in development, so I won't comment on them. What's here is extremely impressive. Really looking forward to seeing this game develop.

I've spent some hours on this game and for a single person developer it's damn good. Yes the period between hits is slow but if your using a shield it's not bad. It does need speeding up between arriving at the mob and hitting it.
The graphics are nice. There is a learning curve, although not steep on which mobs you should be attacking depending on level and armor.
I've seen reviews complaining about the armor and weapon drops. This game uses crafting to make armor and weapons. If you check the crafting boxes carefully you can see a drop down menu for worn to legendary type items. You simply need the level and the components to make that item. I like it, crafting has finally become extremely relevant in a game not just a side piece to do when bored. It has become necessary to craft your armor if you want better.
At the moment it is a grindy but not overly so and there is no auto save. I can't count the times as the silly sanguine I am, did not find a campfire to save at and lost two to three levels of progression. Don't be like me. Save at every campfire when you level even if you have to travel 5 minutes to find one. This may change as the game evolves but right now manual saves are your best friend.
Some armor and weapons drop but they are usually a higher level which you can sell, hang onto or disassemble for components. So far I am enjoying this game immensely, some challenging mobs and bosses. The skills are few and simple and the talents are basically your stats. A game need not be complex to be fun.
I recommend this game even in early access despite movement, combat lag, bugs and timing issues.

Okay, Alpha. Keep that in the forefront of the mind. This (These?) Dev's are working on a fantastic idea here. I remember the wonder I felt when I first loaded up Diablo and started a game. This made me return to those days in a blink. The loot drops, the mobs, the excitement of the next encounter... Okay, back to the Alpha. Yes, once you get the hang of it it is short, real short, but these guys have brought back the feeling of those old Diablo days without a doubt. The crafting is nice too, since the armor and weapons you can make out do those you can loot at the moment, again, the Alpha thing. The main boss (again ...Alpha) is a breeze once you work yourself up enough to even try to get to him. So do I say try it and help these guys out? H E L L yes. Give these guys a chance. They are working magic here, give them the time and feed them some green. They have my support fully. This is a labor of love and these guys are in love. Grats guys, well done and keep up the good work!

Can't wait to see more!

I'm giving a thumbs up knowing it is an alpha with glitches and quirks. The game has deep potential as a diabloesque style RPG. The art direction and mood is good. I like the crafting and character progression. It needs more content (especially lore), maybe some more interesting and fleshed out NPCs, and bug squishing and performance enhancement. For the current sale price I probably got my money's worth but I am still hoping for much more.

Malus is a mix of Diablo and Dark Souls and so far it's a pretty good Alpha with a solid base and lot of potential, I love the dark and sad atmosphere (but you know who else I love ? You.)

https://imgur.com/bMshPds / https://imgur.com/eXZLlPN

The gameplay is simple and very dynamic, you always need to move, you can parry, dodge forward and backward and attack (or run away if you are a coward), you have melee attack but if you prefer distance you also can use a bow or magick (only runner / coward prefere distance) and you also have skills, so yeah it's simple but it work like a charm with good feelings and is very easy to take in hand, I found it's pretty rare for this genre

https://imgur.com/hkO06Br

The quests (for the moment, it's a Alpha) are simple and basic too but hey it's a hack'n slash you just want to kill things and become more powerfull and swim in your gold, no ? Don't worry I'm sure the dev will come with a great story / lore and enemies, I trust him

https://imgur.com/5XonQPr / https://imgur.com/vfar6aE

So let's continue... craft and enchantment of weapons and armores are also essentials elements if you want to stay alive (who mentioned potions ?) and have a better stuff, and believe me, you want it, here it is not a question of buying the best equipment from the first merchant - name's Kamilla - that you see (but if you're blind you don't have this problem), but don't worry, Kamilla has something to get you started, no if you want a better stuff to kill bigger things you will have to work with your bare hands and do it yourself (after all, it's not 21st century, and the game is not your Mama), same as the monsters, if it's not you, who will kill them ? Not me because I'm busy, sorry... so what are you waiting for ?

https://imgur.com/IqcBctE / https://imgur.com/PNkUdYS

So if you like what you just read, buy Malus and support the developer, Malus worth it, but give him time, make a game take time, make a good game take much longer especially with a single developer so... join us on Discord and wait with us, help us to help the dev to do a good game while we testing it, and play Malus to kill things with your bare hands ! (but don't forget something to wash your hands, blood is not only red, it's also dirty, and damn tasty)

https://imgur.com/wvgvafr

Also, I quote : "To everyone who wish to test out Work In Progress features of Malus, you can do so by opting for Beta in your steam settings (right click on malus and under the Beta tab, activate it) [...]" -> https://steamcommunity.com/app/1254400/discussions/0/1869497355996567001

Melinkurian
Melinkurian

I love the game so far (played 24 hours) and am very excited about the potential here so YES! :-)
Ok, PROs first:
Crafting - lots of potential here. After getting the axe and pick you can mine ANYTHING you find and potentially make a legendary item. You can't use it yet of course but still it's cool to see what will be. As far as items being too high level to use when you start out - that is true but when you salvage them while crafting you can receive nice mats for making that special piece that you want (usually a weapon for me). Personally I would like some sort of change to weapons such as "fiery", "electric" depending on the type crafted. Just eye candy you know?
Game Feel - Yes, somewhat similar to Diablo (which I loved) and as such I felt obliged to play through the alpha game three times so far as archer, melee and mage. All were enjoyable.
Saving - I know some folks don't like not being able to SAVE whenever you like and yes, you can lose alot if you don't return to your campfire it's true. However, saving right before tough fights or even auto-saving every 5 minutes would take away the challenge here and that is part of the fun (for me) too.

CONS: there is a bit here but only to be helpful to the DEV(s) - not really a negative.
Getting STUCK - I still get stuck in a tree, behind a mountain, on a piece of grass?? and can't 'roll out of it' or use magic to get out. Loading the last save is the only fix. This is very frustrating and a "UNSTUCK" key would be most helpful. Maybe it puts you back to your last campfire - I don't know.
Crafting #1 - while I like the possibilities here it needs a little clean-up. Some items will give you up to qty 99 of each mat used if you scrap it. This is too easy to ABUSE so that you can make OP armor and weapons early on and should be fixed.
Crafting #2 - I am currently level 22 and still cannot wield the highest level staff that I can make. I like this but the levels for Magical Mastery and 2 Handed Magical are hella high. 2H is 641K EXP at this point! I am level 8 for both of these and to use the Legendary Perfected Enchanted Varanite Staff of Light that I made I would need to be level 16 in both. I guess I would need to be level 100 or so to get there?
Crafting #3 - even though there is a SKILL for one-handed magical (weapons) - there is no crafting option for an orb, wand, rod, tome, etc. I would assume that this item(s) would have a faster attack speed than the staff which would be most helpful at lower levels against the faster mobs.
Fighting - targeting (TAB key) is comfortable to use but the R-click on the mouse can fire an arrow or spell off at any random direction while you are getting munched. Can you fix this so that you are locked on to this mob you have targetted?
Inventory - please add a SORT option somehow (key or icon) so that the inventory can be cleaned up.
Armor #1 - I can't tell if there are any differences at this point in types/weights of armor to attack/movement speed or casting benefits. Light armor (for Sorcerer) doesn't appear to offer a benefit to a caster or allow for faster RUN speed. Also, no detriment to wearing the heaviest armor to the same? At this point I guess wear the best, heaviest armor you can make. :)
Armor #2 - Armor Specialization does not seem to be implemented at this time. I have used Light armor for 22 levels and the 'exp' for Light Armor still sits at zero.

Just one more thing - I am maxed out at level 25 as a Sorcerer and using the Legendary Perfected Enchanted Varanite Staff of Light that I crafted, I can pretty much one-shot everything so far. The Shades take 2 hits but I think they have one health left or something low like that after one hit. So, either Magic and/or the Staff is way OP or the Mobs need a larger health boost. Also, the Force Shield skill/spell seems to be pretty powerful as well. The Shades can pound on me with no damage at all. Just saying :-)

DEV(s) - GREAT job so far - I am anxious to see what is next. :D

I've only played for a few hours, but I can recommend this game.
Although this is listed as an ARPG it doesn't play like most where you can take on a group of enemies and barley get close to dying; here you can die to merely a few or just one. Basically, due to the combat system you can't just run through like POE or Diablo 3. When your weapon is sheathed you can move faster and regenerate health. When it's drawn you move slow, can't regenerate health, but can dodge.
Other things of note:
*You can rebind keys
*Crafting is everything - you can mine ore, chop trees, skin animals, etc. for components to make armor/weapons.
*You level up to attain stat points and skill points - as you use certain weapon/armor types you gain proficiency which you will need to unlock other skills.
*You can have multiple save files, but you have to save at a campfire (no autosave)- some people have had a problem with type of save system, but you just have to remember to save every so often or risk losing all your items again (I learned after the 3rd time.)
The main problem I had playing was having to "Find the Pixel" - I had to keep clicking around until the character would begin chopping trees or mining the ore otherwise he would just stand there or run past it.
Overall I think this will shape up into a fun game once finished and out of EA.

This game still has along way to go but the atmosphere is quite good and not one of those many shiny, brainless truck-load looter hack'n'slash games which are quite similar in their formula.
In this game you got to watch your tactics to stay alive. I hope the developers polish this diamond in the rough to the potential it shows.

Obidus
Obidus

Edit - Currently abondonware. If development ever continues again, I may change my review back to recommended. In the meantime, seriously don't waste your money on this.

Original:
This game has amazing atmosphere and a lot of potential. The gameplay and visuals are great. As an older gamer, I don't much like having to get to a fire to save my game. Life comes up and I have to deal with things, I can't wait 5 or 10 minutes to find a fire or risk losing my progress. However, I respect that that feature is important to the dev. I'd really like to see it become an optional feature, instant saving. I see that a save is now created when you enter a dungeon, and you go back to it if you die in the dungeon. I appreciate this.
I really hope the dev continues developing this game, as I think it will be a wonderful addition to the genre if it's able to be fully realized. I also understand that it can be extremely challenging to create a game of this calibur as a single developer. Keep up the good work, Rahman!
If you like the arpg genre, give this a shot. It's worth the money even in it's current alpha state.

Brilliant Game! it has its own dark eerie feel to it, has a crafting system which is interesting. Diablo 1 vibe with dark souls in the mix , i cannot wait for the next update! interesting to see what the story is .

I'm really loving the atmosphere and the early mechanics so far. A blend of runescape, skyrim, diablo, with a splash of dark souls in the mix. The combat system (while a little clunky) will take time to learn but I have no problem with that. This is definitely a diamond in the rough so far. Can't wait to see what they do next. My main concern so far is being caught on random patches or objects. When you do get caught up you're only option in to re-load your save(It's in alpha what can you do?). This can set you back a lot. Being able to run at the cost of stamina while having your weapon wielded would be nice(Not having to sheath weapon a bunch just to run between a few kills). Other than that it's a real trial and error kind of experience. explore, die, learn, grind.

As an experienced d2 modding enthusiast and general genre extrimist I find this game dissapointing, even being in alpha and thus expected to be with some flaws, I simply do not see anything that can grab me and inspire me to play it. On the other hand on each step I see blunders, flaws and lack of total optimisation, not to mention any clear artistic approach. Sorry if I am being too critic, but the devs must either sharpen their pencils or just release this product for free as of the current state.

The game is great! I'm really impressed what this guy has come up with. It's very unique with a really cool atmosphere. I'm baffled by the quality of the game in its alpha state. Those that moan about it have no idea what they are babbeling about. They cant appreciate art when they see it, and they don't realize that not every genre is meant to appeal for everyone. If I don't like a genre, I don't give reviews. This does absolutely not speak to the Path of Exile zoom zoom kill 5 screens crowd and that's a good thing!

I've bought the game and tried it out. the battle is quite clunky. gathering is difficult since your character rather run into them instead of interacting. sometimes nothing happens. the animations are ok but it doesn't feel dynamic. it's been sitting in my library for awhile waiting for a few hotfixes and updates. there's no updates happening for this game at the moment. i'm not sure what's going on with the game's development.

This game is great. I haven't played that many hours yet but so far I think the combat is more interesting than most games in this genre, and the atmosphere of the place is absolutely amazing. The sheath mechanic for weapons is cool, I find it more immersive. I like the way you equip a lantern to see at night and the light source is very beautifully done. This game is really marvelous for the fact that it is in alpha and afaik the dev team is just one guy?! Fully recommend giving this a try, I think it has so much potential.

love this game, even in its early clunky state. The old school simplistic approach to character development feels so good, and you you feel the progression with every level and attribute point used. Cant wait until its finished. I am having a blast even after doing the one quest "The beast" just roaming, harvesting and crafting. GREAT WORK SO FAR!

It has the starts of a good game if not a great one, has some issues here and there which is expected of an early access. Game is difficult enough to make want to get better but not so hard that it makes you want to quit.

READ:

Malus is an indie title that will see much attention by virtue of it's genre, rather than hype. The world will always need an RPG. But, I am writing for a completely different reason.

On the sales page, top line in Discussions, there is this Review that could not be further from the truth. I will re-post it after my rant. Trust me, I keep it real, because "lies ruin the truth" (feel free to use that in the future). I am not calling anyone a liar. I am simply pointing out the truth...Read what we all see on the sales page:

““At first glance, we see another Diablo indie clone, but in fact it is a fairly high-quality RPG, which even looks very solid in early access. Looking forward to further updates! ””

Which one of us does not want a Diablo clone? or a 'fairly high-quality RPG'? Malus is an RPG. It is not in the same class as Diablo...nor POE...nor Grim Dawn. It is an Alpha RPG that is playable...that is it. Dropping a name like Diablo on an indie sales page is simply heartbreaking.

The author makes no excuse for the state of the game. The developer does not place itself at the top of a well-earned RPG genre list. And so, I am clearing this not true statement concerning a "first look". IMO, first look, the game reminds me of Helbreath, a very popular and successful RPG title. Whom here did not like Helbreath?

So please do not take this comment personally. It is something that needed to be cleared in my mind. Malus has a strong chance of being marketable, pending the work put into it by the developer. We play what they build.

My recommendation is No. Even though I purchased this title on sale, $4.99, it is my intent to support the developer. The fact that it is on sale leads me to believe, based on my years of STEAM experience, this game will develop too slow for this current day and age.

Wish I could properly rate this game but as the mouse is so unpredictable, I haven't managed to even grab hold of the lamp at the very beginning so for the time being I have given up.

Watching reviews on YouTube does show the game does have promise, but for now I wont bother any more.

Looks very promising.
Bought on sale to stimulate and support.
Can turn out to be great game.

Just a small suggestion:

Make less complications on the fighting gameplay.
The dodge technique is fine, but no need to have 2 type of dodge, front flip and backflip, just 1 dogdge will be fine in relation to the direction you are facing.
Also the sheathing of your sword and drawing it out, could be made automatic, much easier and less irritative when forgotten to do.
and invest more on skills, attributes and item sets.

Okay, let me start by saying, that this game can quickly and easily become my favourite. I've just started it a few hours ago, and time just flew right by, so in that sense, I believe, in its core, this game is already a success, as it's got the loop right down to its core. Now, don't let that fool you: this is clearly and strictly, a diamond with rough edges, as there's plenty of bugs, improvements ant content that are needed to truly fulfil this games' fantasy. However, if the developer, who currently seems to be a single person working on it, does continue to support this game, and so do you, I truly believe this may end up as a titan of an indie action RPG.

1) The game looks great. The aesthetic is gorgeous. You can feel the Diablo 1 inspiration. As far as visual atmosphere goes, I actually think Diablo IV could take a few notes from Malus. (I'm not saying Malus's graphics are directly comparable with Diablo IV's, but the way everything comes together in Malus hits the right tone.)
2) The combat is fun and unique (and again, you can feel its inspiration plainly in Dark Souls). Fights are challenging without being overly complex or relying purely on a skill bar, which is refreshing for an ARPG and something that I enjoy.
3) The music is perfect, and the sound effects overall are great (including the voices).

It's worth $5 and a bit more as it is. I can't wait to see where this goes.

Overall the game is good. Skill leveling is awesome. Fighting feels fluid. Progression is fine. There's only one flaw and that is Clipping into a large tree and losing ALL OF YOUR PROGRESS. If the Devs could fix that issue the game would be solid overall.

awesome game, needs work, more content ect but overall really great game with lots of potential, and its all done by 1 person...insane work for a single person literally working on a game as a side project. Grab it. Its something to wait for as in content wise but worth a play nonetheless.

UPDATE: i recently tried playing the game and there is a bug at the start, right after the shore, as you do the first task of collecting, the moment you try going out to the grassy area the character gets stuck, no way to get out. I'll update again as things get fixed.

It's early access so keep that in mind. It's fun. You can level quickly and if you get the right stuff you can craft pretty good armor and weapons early on so fighting gets much easier if you develop your character. There are crazy tough enemies if you wander into an area you are too weak for and since you can only save a campfires that will piss you off badly. I got to the swamp finally and it did autosave in the hut. So I guess it autosaves on transitions where you see the loading message. It's diablo ish souls ish? Hopefully more comes for this game as it has potential. My biggest gripe is the controls. And god help you if you walk too close to a mountain that is on the bottom of the screen. I clipped into a tree once as well and had to restart due to being stuck. Early access though so issues are expected.

Definitely like whats here, there doesn't seem to be a lot of variation between quests though. The game is being made by one guy so i wasn't expecting a whole lot, but what is here i like.

So, First things first- What Im enjoying about the game so far,
1. Its an ARPG, I generally enjoy arpg's and i figure most people who enjoy them will enjoy this when it eventually gets out of EA.
2. The crafting system, I personally feel this is a crafting system at least as good as Diablo 3's but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to do with it yet, it will however probably be very necessary late game.
3. The stamina system feels like dark souls, which is a weird thing to do in an arpg, but in this it feels natural and dodging actually gives i-frames which i wasn't expecting from a one man dev team.
4. The atmosphere feels amazing, the dark dreary ambiance and the really good boss music is fantastic.
5. I like the variety of weapons available, and while they don't always work how i want them to they feel mostly very satisfying, possibly due to the fun rag-doll physics.
6. The size of the world is great, and i hope its more populated in the future.
That does seem like very few items to enjoy, but I'm taking this game with a grain of salt cause like i said earlier this seems to be being made by one person.
Now, things i think could be improved.
1. The weapons don't always work; There was a few times when i tried attacking and either nothing happened or the character did some weird stutter animation. Not sure if i was trying to attack too fast, but it's something to work on.
2. The unknown recommended level for an area or quest, i think this should be at least implemented for the quests so a player can plan what direction to head next, cause there has been more than a couple times when i've gotten wrecked simply by running into an enemy that one shot me in a new area and i lost a bunch of progress cause the save system designed so you can only save at camps.
3. Spells/Skills have to have better targeting, for instance the fire ball spell which says its designed to use at a distance you can only really hit anything when you're surrounded by enemies, because the spell simply launches the spell into the air at a very high arc and then dissipates. I ended up basically using it as a super close range nova spell.
4. The quests, quests are generally designed to do a few different things. First, they give the player something to do. Second, they introduce the player to new monsters and/or areas they would have otherwise passed by. Third, they introduce new npc's that the player can rely on in some way (possibly for more quests). Fourth, they progress the/a story in some way. My problem with the quests in this is that, at best they are rudimentary in their ability to pass any of these qualifications. For instance the first quest where you find a package on the road and take it to a person in the starter town was great that it introduced you to the first shop, and it led directly into the second quest to hunt a boss mob, but there was no follow up. Now its plain the dev wants an open world, but if there is no game interaction there is no reason to continue to play. I ended up finding a quest giver by exiting the town out of the north exit, where they asked me to do an escort quest. And then they got hit by a random mob and died, now I'm not sure if this was scripted or not but that doesn't make sense. The only reason i continued was i was curious but and escort quest either has to have an invulnerable npc or an npc who has a chance at survival other wise there is no reason what so ever to continue. After i went to the cemetary to clear out the skeles which is what the quest was about the quest didn't complete so my guess is i had to keep him alive.
5. The player model is weird when going down a hill, the legs bend backward, please fix this, it probably means the model needs smoother collision physics, but thats just a guess.

Hope this helps

i really really like the idea i´ve semi enjoyed the game so far, its full of bugs getting stuck in the middle of nowhere with no wall or mountain to get stuck into. i see se concept and believe its good, a dream will be to add some survival (hunger, thirst etc) the combat its good has a good concept of it, but movement doesnt register sometimes, whenever you fold your weapon, same thing doesnt register a proper clicking. i believe this game with a good team and effort could be great, so sorry the current state of it is not that "optimized".

its cheap, give it a try if you are into old diablo vibes and soul like the mixing its nice believe, or just don buy the game yet w8 for malus to have most of the stuff fixed then buy it

Twitch.tv/weekendwarchief - watch my Malus gameplay.

Likes:
1. It's Rust meets Diablo. I enjoy all the gathering skills. Build your gear.
2. Class neutrality, I like that you start with no particular class but can build toward a specialization.
3. Great sound effects, I still get chills from the wolves howling.

Dislikes:
1. No Multiplayer, no online experience.
2. No real story, the game has small story lines to push questing but what is Malus about?
3. Very somber music/atmospheric sounds, I get drowsy playing the game

Update: 09/17/2021: 6, almost 7 months, no updates. Developer deleted the update log so you can't see when it was last posted but some of us still remember. Disgusting developer trying to hide tracks of when this game received their latest updates to make it seem like it's still under development.

Update: 06/11/2021: Game seems to be abandoned, no news on both Discord and on Steam. Last known update said there will be a update hopefully mid march, it is now 3 months later and not a single word or reason of absence. If this was a business, this employee would've been fired.

Will be requesting my refund soon because of this. I've waited 3 months in hopes that the update will polish the game to what it could and should be, but instead I am left neglected as a consumer. As any consumer, you should invoke your consumer rights- don't use your rights, you lose it. Developers get away and act up and fuck us over. The majority of us have worked jobs, we know how it is if we don't perform... Why should any less be expected from developers.

I'd like to point out some game breaking bugs that have prevented me from getting past the wolf boss.

1) Sometimes the wolf boss will disappear, making it impossible to finish the quest and progress.
2) Sometimes after finishing the boss and whatnot, exiting the dungeon suddenly crashes game.
My experience regarding 1 and 2: I had ran into the boss the first time and couldn't find him, ran around the dungeon to find him but could never find him. I wasted about an hour doing that, then I decided to just look him up on Youtube breaking my immersion. I then reset my game because apparently he disappeared somehow. Then, I end up going to the dungeon and fight him, finally. Fighting him- I proceed to full clear the dungeon (I'm a completionist) and leave- when I do, game suddenly crashes.

I do this again- same thing, crash except this time I didn't full clear cause fuck that. I do it again, crashes. I stopped playing this game.

Other notable bugs.

3) Going up stairs sometimes doesn't work, you have to roll to get unstuck off whatever it is I'm stuck too.
4) Sometimes walking on walking paths made of planks will get you stuck, you either have to walk backwards or again dodge roll to get off the plank that you get stuck too.
5) Sometimes clicking a mining spot, tree, or otherwise, won't work and I end up staring at the item until I walk away and click the said resource again.
6) When going down a steep hill, sometimes the game registers your clicks at the upper terrain and makes you go backwards. Very annoying sometimes, making me miss combos, dodges, or otherwise sometimes mid fight.
7) Sometimes approaching camp too quickly from the left side of the campfire area will make you get stuck and unable to get off, unless you use the unstuck key where you hop out of the ground- ruins my immersion.

Not a bug, but balance issue...

Fighting low tier enemies sometimes drops level 12 items which you can salvage for materials even though you're not even at that level. Example, my character is level 10, I'm still at the first boss, and I'm almost max equipped and have super high tier items upgraded.

Last and final bug mention- There is a bug with quiver where the upper most tier is the same as the lowest tier. I will never understand that- and there's not a lot of quivers available.

Last update was 5 months ago. Not enough content, mechanics, stability to be worth buying or playing currently. Appears to be going the way of abandonware. Always sucks when a new entry into a genre a lot of us get very excited over ends up like this. One would hope the developers use criticsms as feedback to feed their motivation to move forward.

If this game is abandonware at this point devs should consider refunds. Even if you buy a game in early access you are still doing so with the expectation that devs aren't giving up and abandoning their project they listed for real money on a storefront. That expectation is valid. Hopefully will prove its customers wrong. Seems unlikely at this point.

Game have a lot pf potential. But also need a lot of work. Graphic is well polished but the control is not. I hope the developer is not neglecting the project. Working alone making a game can be overwhelming, find some friends to help work on the project and ask friends to test the game specially is they are a gamer that love Diablo like genre and listen to their opinion. When you think everything is well polished and low bug. Try to find a game publisher to help you releasing the game. I'm sure publisher will be interested in your work even on the current state. Don't give up

Honestly, they may be on to something here, but perhaps no game suffers more from being in "Oily Excess" than this one. There are a lot of good ideas, but they're implemented in their infancy. This feels like what you'd get if you were REAL excited for a game and it got cancelled, and then the devs released "what they had".

I'd like to see more of an autosave system than just "when passing by a campfire" or whatever trips it. There's nothing like harvesting an ass of resources, only to find yourself two-shot by something you're not meant to be tangling with yet while trying like hell to un-lock from it or roll or drink a potion or do ANYTHING but get "hit hit dead".

Currently there are like a handful of skills, and they're all your goofy ARPG fare, "smack the ground to do a little shockwave", wiggle your staff to shoot a fireball....... and that's your lot. There are no skills for bows, like four for magic, and the rest are just sort of "there". You can buff your armor class briefly, kick stuff in front of you, swing your sword in a big arc, aaaaand that's about it. No "classes" to speak of, just you, your sword, the ability to roll forward and backward, and a series of things that are going to rip you a new one if you fail to do any of these things.

I bought the game at a $5 price point, and I didn't hate the time I spent with it, but I think I'll wait until they add some more substance to things before I pick it back up.

It seems really fun but I can't get the second quest. When I get to town, no one has anything for me. I think, from watching a youtube video, Nora was supposed to send me to some stranger.. Well, she just sends me on my way. The blacksmith doesn't even speak with me only wants to trade and Bjorn I can't speak with at all. That's the towns people, and none of them advance me further. There's some pretty annoying parts about the game which you can work around. Night starts at like 5pm or so and your screen goes black. You can turn your gamma up and play in the fog lol. Come 7am it's okay again. Sometimes when running to your screen, if a mountain blocks the view, you can't just click behind you through the moutain. I just rolled until I could click the ground behind me. Since the guy doesn't seem to be able to fix anything anytime soon and is going through some legal issues, i'm just going to refund. It'd be great in a year or so when he has time to work on it

Ambitious, detailed, and fairly smooth considering it's early access state! And it's one of the first hack n' slash games that has broken the barrier between itself and similar ARPGs by bridging the combat to be a little of both. I'm also very impressed that the terrain is entirely scaleable, albeit a little rough at certain points (Rocky mountainsides, wooden paths cause hangups) - And by scale, I mean the man can walk up mountains, and fall forever without dying.

I will say... The autosave feature.. Doesn't make sense. I played for 50 minutes and saved once, and the autosave never triggered.. When I died, neither available save was anywhere near where I was.

Again, I know it's early access and wipes are a maybe, but it'd be nice if the autosave feature actually autosaved :)

Great game otherwise, I'm loving it. Keep up the great work!

Initially I thought this was a game with potential until I discovered that only a relatively small area of the large map has anything going on. There are 3 missions and then appears to have nothing more. This game was supposed to come out 2 years ago and it is still early access, plenty of bugs to fix and polish to apply. Now it feels like it has been abandoned. If I hear further development has been done, I will come back and check it out again.

Not a bad concept. I liked the slow pace of the game. No maps for the caves, so its easy to get lost and wonder around for a long time. Still some bugs in the character movement and glitches overall. With more work this could be a great game.
