what a shame!

some part of the game is good but there is a huge problem.

diplomacy/peace never exists: if you even make a peace with a country specially when your playing France, after short term there will be war again. this gets you constant manpower shortage because your at war all the time.

Great Britain naval power is crazy: after 2 years in the game time line Britain will blockade every port you have. the crazy thing about it is that you can't defeat them even if you have more ships.

what a shame that this game wasn't fixed by paradox interactive

Probably one of the most underrated Paradox Games.

No, you aren't going to be able to spend hundreds of years shaping a civilisation.

But you'll have a lot of fun if all you're looking for is a war game based in the era.

March of the Eagles isn't bad. I'd go as far to say it's actually a tad underrated.

The "grand strategy map painter" genre is over saturated, and this game in a way does add to that saturation. Especially when compared against other paradox titles like EU4 and Victoria 2.... and 3.

But this game is a novelty and while those previous games do have much more content March of the Eagles has something no paradox game has had before or after "A COMPLETE BASE GAME". Yes this game while having balancing issues, being a tad janky and being relatively uninspiring is more than functional and for 20$ you can play a completed game.

If you like the Napoleonic wars as a setting it's pretty cool too, alliances aren't set in stone (minus perhaps France and Britain always being rivals) so you can do some unique things like Ally France as Russia and split the continent. You can also play as the Ottomans and decide to help Napoleon or the Coalition.

The battles and wars are fought like most paradox games, great armies and march them into other armies and siege Providences until the war score goes in your favor. But there is something semi unique here.

- Army compositions (armies have many nation specific militias, regiments and units. meaning you can make giant armies of peasant militias or small armies of highly motivated elite troops) All the major countries, England, Russia, France, Prussia have 15-30 different units you can string into a coherent army. So in a way its sort of like a Napoleonic Hearts of Iron.

All the major countries have unique flavor and national focuses and events well.

Multiplayer works with LAN so if you want to get a buddy into Paradox grand strategy this would serve as a good introduction.
The game is also less than half a gigabyte so it's not taking any space. Works good on the Steam Deck too.

I give it 73/100.

If you actually know about the Napoleonic wars and want to play a strategey game with them then this is good. If your looking for a sandbox game and dont have any knowledge of the time period skip it. DO NOT listen to all the idiots that say this is a bad game.

So there are many promises to what "Crusader Kings: Napoleon" could have been. Sadly this game falls short on almost all of those promises, even if you get the game at 80% off the way I did

1 - Britain is stupidly overpowered in terms of navy... Yes their navy was powerful, but in the game Britain can easily have twice as many ships as all other playable nations COMBINED. If you try to go to war with them, there is literally no way it can be done because of how much naval spam there is. This immediately limits any fun you can have playing as France or Spain.

2 - Small nations get bullied out of existence. Whether you try going as Denmark, Egypt, Morocco, or some other nation, there is no feasible way to significantly grow your income or your army before running into limits of some sort. Manpower limits are usually the first, income limits shortly follow right after.

3 - Theres no feasibly way to significantly boost economy. Port upgrades, town upgrades, and even road upgrades only assist in building units faster and moving them around faster. Actually funding them though? Zero noticable upgrades. So all those lovely ports and upgraded towns you build in your provinces contribute effectively nothing to the actual amount of income your nation gets month by month

4 - Tech levels. There is a sort of tech system in the game, the problem is that the ONLY way to increase it is battle experience. Each nation starts with some sort of baseline 25 points per month (200 needed to unlock ANY tech), and the only way to increase that rate is to fight major battles. That by default means that any nation that starts out with some techs unlocked have a big advantage over other nations, and creates a catch 22 where in order to catch up to the advancements of other nations you have to go fight them, and win those engagements against superior enemies.

I could go on. Long story short, those of you who were looking for a game to scratch the itch that Total War: Empire or Total War: Napoleon gave you 15+ years ago, this game is not the one to help you. You would be better off returning to other Paradox games like HOI4 or CK2/CK3, or shift more towards the Total War games for those of you who like a dose of economic management mixed in with your grand strategy war sim games

A lot like Hearts of Iron, a war simulator, more so, than a political simulator. It serves well, as this. If you can handle some border gore and enjoy Hearts of Iron, get it on sale, but don't pay full price, because it's really not worth it enough for that.

Anyone interested in the Napoleonic Wars, or if you want to see a more fleshed-out military than EUIV or CKII, should defininitely check out this game. The flank commanders and tactics system, and the fleshed out after action reports blew me away in the first few hours of gameplay.
Its a shame that this game did not get any updates from the developers; there's only a single start date.

March of the Eagles is one of the two games Paradox notoriously stopped development on shortly after release, the other being EU:Rome. Unlike Rome, March of the Eagles isn't getting an imperator, so it stands as the only representation of the Napoleonic Era besides late game EU4. I saw the bad reviews and videos and figured the game was garbage, but still wanted to give it a chance, if only for the meme. Surprisingly it is very enjoyable.

Gameplay

March of the Eagles is situated in the Napeolonic era and is accordingly a war game through and through. Diplomacy is relatively simple and economy/land management is basically ignorable in easier starts. The game focuses on the wars through coalitions that are largescale alliances that join together to fight against united enemies. The gameplay is rather enjoyable and plays very similarly to EU4, albiet with a larger focus on invidivual tactics within a battle that isn't immediately visible. EU4 seems like deathstacks thrown at each other but has a complex underbelly of modifiers. This is similar but to a more focused extent.

The larger nations in the game are remarkably easy to play if you're used to other paradox games like eu4 or vic2. At first I figured a nation like France could be daunting and overwhelming, but with essentially no experience you can totally wipe out anything in your path with them. With more experience the other nations are opened up and you realize that the game isn't actually that difficult by paradox standards. It was highly enjoyable getting my navy, that outnumbered Britian by 3-1, totally trashed, and invading Portugal in frustration. AI isn't the greatest though.

Music

This is subjective but in my opinion its the most subpar of all paradox titles. The tracks get old pretty quickly and even on first hearing aren't particularly good. This is interesting since the trailer music was actually pretty good and I was expecting some good music if nothing else. Oh well.

Design

March of the Eagles is a pretty old game, released over 5 years ago, and hasn't aged amazingly by paradox standards. If you're into paradox you'll be able to grapple on really quickly regardless, especially if you like the older titles like ck2 or vic2. If you're brand new, however, the UIs can be really really daunting. The game provides a large amount of hints to help new players along, a lot more than I ever really saw in other games as far as accessibility goes. The map also looks pretty good, has a nice rustic feel to it.

Final Verdict

March of the Eagles is a pretty good game. It's nothing compared to EU4, CK2, etc, but it holds up for what it is, a napoleonic war game. It's very fun to trash everyone as France or try to survive as Persia, so I'd reccomend getting this when it's on sale. 20 is a bit steep for this when you could get another title, but the game is well worth a lower price like what I got it at, 5. Overall enjoyable, however do not choose this as your first paradox game. You'll probably get bogged down by the older visuals and less polished mechanics. 6/10.

I enjoyed the game, the combat is deeper than any other paradox game. (I especially enjoy reading the hour by hour log after a battle telling me who did what and when)

- No war justification needed
- Hundreds of units
- Tactics
- Raiding supply lines
- Marshal Michel Ney 'Le brave des braves'
- A chance to finally bring Austria to glory
- Honestly some of the most fun I've had in a paradox game to date

however for me the game doesn't have too much replay value. the combat is deep but everywhere else it is lacking. sorely.

but yeah buy the game, its pretty kick ass.

Decent if you want a Paradox game designed solely on the battles of the Napoleonic wars. Get it on sale and you'll have enough fun to justify the purchase. The game is relatively short compared to other titles but that's to its advantage as its about warfare instead of diplomacy, unlike other titles by Paradox. Overall the game is an 8/10 but you should definitely grab it on sale incase you decide it's not what you wanted.

Even though this game lacks features and content found in either EU4 or CK2, I always had fun while playing it. It gives justice to a small but great era for games, the Napoleonic Wars, which is one of my favorite periods in history. And in my opnion it provides better military gameplay than that of EU4 or CK2.

This game is not for you if:
you think it will be crusader kings in napoleonic times
you want a game where you can build your empire for many years

This game is for you if:
you want little and fast game
you want something like crusader kings but only the army and war part in napoleonic times

This game is - little - fast - good - about the combat and battles and war in interesting way

only people who think this game is bad are people what were expecting bigger game - so everything you need to think about is - do you like napoleonic wars? - are you ok with the price?

i bought this game in sale and im happy with my choice

I played for a little while and had fun doing it, i honestly like the combat system, it isnt HOI level, but its more in depth than EU and CK for sure, and the game is honestly better than people say. Sure, it is not perfect, Diplomacy is the worst out of any paradox map game, and the limited time period takes a lot away. Dont buy it full price though, wait for a sale.

I am a big fan of Paradox games in general when they are in the same vein as the EU, CK, or HOI series. Unfortunately, this game is not one that I can recommend based on my personal preferences. It is a very short time frame compared to the others, but unlike say HOI which is in a similar length of time, there just is not anything I found to keep me playing.

Graphically, it is quite nice, using the same engine as the most recent entries, but as strange as it is the primary focus being combat was just not satisfying in my mind. If your preference is focusing on the combat from either EU IV, or Victoria 2, this might be a good choice. Otherwise, I would stick with one of the other two (or four).

This is just my personal opinion though, as it should be noted that when I first purchased the game, I was looking for something to really bridge the gap, but as I said, it just was not for me.

March of the Eagles is a very good computer opponent that is versatile and even does dirty tricks like hiding British forces under Spanish Units to play hide-and -seek evasion from the French, disappearing when chased and reappearing when the French pursuit halts due to the British units' "disappearance". Timing of dispersion and concentration and rapid marches are crucial. You must pick your technology and tactical advances carefully. The different capabilities of the leaders are significant in choosing division and corps commanders.

Transforming Europe into map-gore through spectacular battles. MOtE is truly a strategic battle royale. It's like "Always War Mod" for Europa Universalis III but as an individual game. You have to fight everyone and backstab them suddenly. Be sure they will do the same to you.

Pros:
- Epic!
Cons:
- Too short timespan
- Too little nations to set free as puppets
- France
- Diplomacy is lame, nevermind what you do, they will backstab you anyway

I'm giving it 9/10.

This is one of Paradox' inbetweeny games. It's really only focused on the Napoleonic era, and there isn't as much depth as the other Paradox games. If this hadn't been a Paradox game, it would have gotten a positive review, but all the other Paradox games surpass this in different areas, so unless you just really want a Paradox-esque game specifically focused on the Napoleonic era, there really isn't much here.

Noblington
Noblington

Despite the memes, its actually not as bad as you might think. Its on sale at time of writing, so give it a whirl, you very well may find something youll enjoy here

Superficial Stuff:

Music: I really like the music here. While it doesnt have many tracks, the few it does have are really great. They fit very well with the game, and the battle tracks are very, very good. Give the OST a listen on YouTube, if you like the style, you wont be disappointed, 8/10

grafix: On par with other games Paradox makes. Definitely not bad, but not great either. They serve the purpose they should be serving, and they do that job well. 6.5/10

Actually Important Stuff
Gameplay: VERY fast paced. If you like that sort of thing, this is the game for you. Unless youre playing as a smaller country, you will likely be at war for the majority of the game. Think HoI4, but World War II starts in August 1936. This game is no where near as in depth as EU4, but it wasnt designed to be, and doesnt try to be something it isnt. It is a war game, no two ways about it, 100% war focused. It can get confusing at times, there are a million different brigades you can make, but a lot are virtually identical to eachother, and so can get ignored. The ideas system that was in previous games is expanded and changed to something more like EU4's system, and its in a transitional period. I think EU4's idea system is better, but overall it does serve the purpose its supposed to serve, i.e. allowing nations to specialise in certain things, and giving nations extra flavour. The game is not for everyone, if you like fast paced, basically battle royale style games, then this game is great. If not, id suggest a different title. I enjoyed what ive played though. 7/10 for me, if HOI4 is your favourite game, then its probably around an 8, if your favourite is ck2, then probably a 3 or 4

Stability: Note I am playing on a shitty laptop from like 10 years ago, so you will likely have a better experience than me, but this is what i experienced. This game runs fine, a couple serious frame drops, but generally pretty smooth, and i get good speeds when at speed 5 (not something i can normally say, my EU4 speed 5 is probably your speed 3). I have had a few random crashes though, so be aware of that. If you care about your game, save fairly regularly. 6/10

Overall: Not nearly as bad as the iSorrow bandwagon would have you believe. There is definitely something to be enjoyed here. 7/10

TL;DR Good music, good enough graphics, fast paced, HOI4 x10 style gameplay, and i had a few random crashes. Give this game a try if its on sale.

This game is fine. Pick it up on sale. its like a really really really light Hearts of Iron 3. In fact, I actually think that the idea of putting the HOI razor focus onto a different historical setting is a neat concept. However, it falls apart when you realize that the ww2 era saw some of the most exponential growth in armament, industrial power, and political climate in history ever, and armies were being moved with heralding precision in operations that spanned thousands of miles around the world. The Napoleonic Wars didn't have any of that. It's one of the prime reasons that there isn't a Heart's of Iron specifically centered around World War 1, not enough changed during the war. The Napoleonic Wars move in little increments, you take some territory, get a little boost to your country through ideas, invest a little in civil development, and then bite off another chunk. There is no development of the nation or major shift happening in the world. Napoleon really does fit better in Total War than in Paradox. Still, when on sale for like 5 bucks, its worth the effort of a quick campaign or two at the least.

I actually really like this game. Even though it's a bit clunky and it was mostly designed with multiplayer in mind (as far as I know), it actually does a great job of simulating most Napoleonic combat on a grand strategy scale. You don't just make 3 units like in EU4, or have very basic versions of the 19th century units like in Victoria 2, in this, virtually all the different troops are specific to each country and each country has unique units. Some countries are a little hard to play certain ways, such as France as a naval power, or one of the smaller countries as a land power. I haven't played it to completion, but, I really like the fact that everything is simulated and some things are more realistic than I first realized. For example...Even though I had a massive fleet of huge ships as France in several battles, when it was relatively close, my admiral simply wasn't able to win against a better admiral. I really like that, even if it was frustrating, because it shows that this isn't just a doomstack competition. Sieging is pretty indepth as well...Instead of fighting your opponent, you can choose to hole up in a fortress and fight it out that way (But it still plays out as a battle!!!). Much, much better than the crazy way it happens in EU4, or the weird occupation thing in Victoria 2. The attrition is *very* rough, especially if you do a naval invasion, but, it is what it is, I suppose. Thankfully, the combat *is* dynamic and isn't just a ton of dice rolls, the generals you pick for each flank in your army will actively try to choose tactics to counter their opponents (you can even set them to fight a certain way), and sometimes even really lopsided battles can still result in massive casualties for the winner.
I *am* a Napoleon enthusiast, so, let's just say it's nice to see this era get more interest. I'm sorry Isorrow doesn't like it, I think it's a great game honestly.

Once I got through the tutorial sessions (which covered the basics) I found the playing was fun, even though I still feel like a toddler learning to walk. I'm a few hours (9) into my first campaign, I'm using the very easy setting whilst I continue to master the more intricate details, but there are plenty of tool-tips to click on and help me.

I'm an experienced turn-based player (such as Total War) so this style of play takes a little adjustment, but I can still pause the clock whilst I make adjustments to my politics, economy, creating units or military movements.

I've had this game (and others from the same series) in my Games folder for a few years. Wish I'd had patience to try this game sooner. Great fun, but be aware that time flies quickly when playing this game.

There is room for improvement. the game itself is breathtaking even tho i played for only 1h you could already see that it is immersive and well thought out game. AI makes minor mistakes but it happens to all games. Where this game truly shines is when player fully utilizes the really deep and well designed battle mechanics which no other paradox game could really provide even up to this day. I recommend it to anyone who really enjoys doing battles and utilizing complicated strategies to dominate the map of Europe.

The game is a stripped out, shortened version of Europa Universalis. It's a recreation of the Napoleanic Wars with a time frame too short for nation development, so playing as a minor power is not recommended.

Definitely the BEST Paradox game. It has really deep economic and diplomatic mechanics. It's historically accurate and fun. It's a great game to continue a mega campain after EU4 and just before Victoria 2. Obviously the game is worth it's price but the gameplay gets kinda repetative unless you have the British Units Pack. Oh my! I could look at these models for hours! There's only 1 inaccuracy I spotted while playing. On the map there is a place named "Denmark". From what I know, there is no land mass there, just sea. But maybe it's like an alternative history of some sort or something. Who knows.

Don't look at my playtime tho. I just play it on another account and I have 1000 hours there, I promise.

Paradox has an amazing lineup of great strategy games. Best there is to be found. This game... is not one of them. I cant't believe they are willing to keep their name on this piece of junk. Despite having similar interface to the Europa Univeralis franchise, March of the Eagles is nowhere as deep as EU4 and is much more war-focused. If you want proper grand strategy stick with EU4. If you want the satisfaction of conquering the whole map in Napoleonic era (which March of the Eagles does allow you to do) you're better off with something like Total War Napoleon which has tactical battlefields rather than a fancy version of Risk. . .

Do you like Napoleon? Do you like by any chance Paradox? If you've answered "yes" to both questions then I have a newsflash for you. You'll love it. It is a game with simple mechanics and people already familiar with Victoria 2 will certainly feel at home. the time span of the campaign is that of Napoleon's Grand Campaign but you have the option to play over it (it comes in the form of a decision at the end of the assigned time period). If at sale, this product is a good option.

And trust me when I say it that it is funnier with friends (the multiplayer is dead).

It's difficult to find a Napoleonic game that lies between eye candies like NTW, with great visuals but little deep and realism, and the insanely complex and chunky AGEOD titles. I think March of the Eagles partly succeeds in this. It's a pity they haven't developed further the tactical phase with more control on the battles for the player. Moreover there is no road system on the map, however this is partly compensated by the minute subdivision of the map in provinces. All in all I'd recommend it if you are interested in Napoleonic warfare - at least at the present discounted price.

Widely considered as the best paradox game ever created, March of the Eagles focuses on the Napoleonic conflicts right before the events of the Victoria series. In March of the Eagles you have many choices of great powers in Europe such as: Great Britain, Prussia, Austria, Russia, Great Britain, The Ottomans, Sweden and most importantly France, But aside from these relatively strong and interesting starts what I recommend most is playing as one of the romanian minors. In the starting position of a romanian minor you get to experience the great events of the ottoman empire unfold around you as a side character. Most of these such events are getting pile drove by Russia and Austria over the span of 10 years while you have to watch your army get stack wiped over and over and over again. This is what truly made me fall in love with march of the eagles, the sense of hopelessness and despair that you rarely find in the modern video game market. that is why I recommend march of the eagles to any avid paradox fan or a new player looking to tackle and enjoy the massive paradox library of map games. Thank you for taking the time to read this review and remember, fuck the turks!
