Tiny marshmallow warriors doing battle with a variety of crazy foes while you frantically order them around a wide assortment of awesome and dynamic little rooms IN VR! what’s not to like! There are echo’s of the arcade classic Gauntlet here along with more modern “roguelikes” such as The Binding of Isaac. It starts out pretty easy, although keeping both the chaps you start with alive is tough. Once one of them died though I found it easier to manage with just one little fella to scream at (screaming does in fact not help), kiting enemies around till my little Balthasar could ping them down with his bow.
The difficulty keeps ramping up as you beat level after level, the periodic shops are a godsend with the special powers granted by hats an absolute must. You also get occasional fresh recruits to replace the inevitable losses. There is enough going on here to keep interested with different powers, weapons and items though hopefully more will be added as the early access progresses.
All in all Marshmallow Melee is a solid professional looking product, the production quality is high, the environments rich and detailed without getting cluttered. The gameplay is simple and arguably the difficulty takes a little too long to start to bite, meaning the first 10-15 levels are pretty much a cake walk. But when it starts to get hard managing your specials, using the bombs and other items that pop up and effective control of your little mellowies becomes really important. There are plenty of laughs and plenty of simple VR joy in being able to inhabit a world like this.

For more general banter and gameplay I’ve inevitably done a little vid which you can find here.

Jesus i would like to love this game but the choice of control is so damn wrong!!

you should have focus on controlling one character only

controlling three characters with the choice you've made is absolutely no fun at all and the only great moment is when you have one character only in control

please just focus on one character and give us the plain control of it (not by pointing go here and there)

The fun of Rogue like is to learn from your mistake and keep some of the stuff of the previous run

with such hazardous gameplay there is no learning to me made and you just have to hope your character will do what you want and not going elsewhere...

i'm so mad to see such adorable world ruined by just a choice of gameplay!
please juste change the control and you've got a future gem in vr gaming!!

PS : the game is plainly playable with the rift
PS : Recenter should be on a button and could be done anytime

Can I just start by saying that I love this game's aesthetic. This game just has such great character. The selection screen has you "saving" some Marshmallow men to start your climb up the tower.

This is also the first rougue like game that I've seen so far on the Vive. And I personally love rougue like games. So, this game makes me super excited.

I also feel that the price point is extremely fair (even after the initial discount goes away) but if you can get this before the discount drops all the better. I appreciate that the developer has put in the initial discount in the hopes that there will be a strong initial community. I'd love to see some of the strategies that people come up with to be able to get to some of the later levels in the game.

I would recommend watching some gameplay before purchasing this game as this game is not for everyone. The major sticking points that I've seen others make that I agree with are.

1. It can be difficult to manage your units which can lead to frustration (especially when it feels like your units died due to the controls)
2. There is no progression so far between games. Once your trip up the tower fails you start over with nothing to show. This is true for all rouguelikes for the most part, however, there is usually some progression.

But in my opinion those are both pretty minor and are likely to be resolved. (But never purchase a game until you feel it has all the features that you would like). So if the downsides that I listed above are deal breakers, put this game in your wishlist and check back in a month.

Got to floor around floor 40 before my noble warrior Bird died, may he rest in peace.
I really enjoy this game it's simple and easy to get into the Marshmallow people normally did what I wanted them to, the ones who didn't normally died but oh well that's what they get. I like how the mellow people have different names when restarting as well as the shops having different inventory.
If anything I wish I had a way to either keep their items when they died or be able to remove them from the field if they were still alive, but even then I understand why you can't.

The best non-FPS VR game I've played. And even then its probably a tie for first. A MUST buy.

It's one of those "Looks neat, let's give it a quick shot - aaaaand there goes the day" Game. Really enjoyed it so far and looking forward for new stuff.

Vent

Really great little game. Not as involved as some others you might play, you choose your guys' gear and you can guide them around but the fighting is automatic (bar using special abilities), but still a lot of fun, one of the only VR games I've played that seems to focus on making sure it is as low-taxing physically as possible - which I'm greatful for.

Definitely 100% recommend.

CrypticVoid

Best, VR, experience, I have had since I got the HTC Vive. After a while of playing I noticed that the remotes interfered with the enemies and made it seem like I was god but seemed over powered. Yay thank you makers of this I enjoy it a lot.

It's a ton of fun and entertaining. You might find yourself laughing at how silly the marshmallows are. The gameplay becomes very challenging at around level 50, I definitely see myself playing more of this game to get better runs without being bored.

I would love to see controls like in tabletop simulator, after playing for a while my wrists were hurting. Overall an awesome, fun and cute game.

Primatheratrix
Primatheratrix

Pretty fun game. Beat the game in total in about 3 total hours. It takes about 1 hour to get from level 1 through level 50. However, there's quite a bit of replayability. I see myself coming back to this game in the future when I want to play VR without standing.

There's really only two different types of stages in my opinion: stages with single focus enemies and stages with AoE enemies. If you use the wrong warrior for the wrong stage, it's very likely they will die. Also, there is kind of a hidden time mechanic to each stage. If you take too long, invulnerable ghosts will keep appearing and ultimately overwhelm your characters.

The special abilities each helmet gives you are critically important. The vast majority of my time was spent gathering gems to power up my special abilities while avoiding enemies. Additionally, the randomness of the helmets and weapons the store offers adds a level of chance to the game, that I'm not sure I like.

I would highly recommend you use one character at a time and use the rest as backup. Multiple characters can be cumbersome to control simultaneously.

I would encourage the developers to pursue different types of enemies and weapons for a range class. As of right now melee weapons are quite superior. There's really no reason to pick a ranged weapon, and some diversity of choices would improve the game. I would also encourage developers to further diversify the resistances of enemies. For example, on a frozen stage, I would expect my fire helmet to do more damage, and it really didn't seem to make much of a difference.

Overall this game is very well made. The only reason I would consider this an early access title is a lack of choices in strategy. A couple months worth of balancing and adding a little more "polish" (I hate that word) to the introduction and menus in the game, and I think it will be a solid pickup for VR owners.

When I first glanced upon this game I thought, “oh cute” and after playing it I am still thinking, dang, that was fantastic. I made it all the way to the top floor, but not after multiple Game Overs and many lost Marshmallow Men. My first MMO was Granado Espada with 3 character control and this brings a tear of joy to my eyes.

Make no mistake, this game is difficult! First 10-15 levels are there to give you a first impression, but if the store does not roll you somethin good… you are in for a rough time. I love the character design and love the overall level progression system.

No, this game is not finished, far from it, but i cannot wait to see what this game has in store for the future and i will be keeping up on it as much as possible. This is the kind of game i have been waiting for, good job Dev Team!

ZERGSAW

This game is so different from any VR game, it is a must buy. It is very fleshed out already, everytime you play it, it is different. The graphics are great, the warriors are awesome. Dispite some reviews, you can easiliy control each warrior, and make up some tactics. Keep up the good job devs!

Neo_Zain
Neo_Zain

Win! Graphics are adorable, the game is arcade-like but very polished.

The goal of the game is to make it to the top, 50 levels presumably, by directing little marshmellow people to fight and collect items. There is a mix of items that include catagories of consumables, food, helmets, and weapons. Consumables include health potions, bombs, and foam freeze? Food gives your marshmellow's more hp, a perma effect. Helmets contain certain special abilities, like summoning dummy mobs (arcane helm), to restoring health, to raming or spining.

Game style choices are multi control and single. You can have up to all three marshmellow people fighting at once. However controling three dudes at a time can be difficult at times, you can have two, my prefered style, where I have one range (using bow weapons) and one tank (feed it food and there is a shield weapon!). Lastly you can have one marshmellow and use the other two as 'backups'.

The tutorial isn't too helpful but the controls are easy to learn. I hope that the dev's keeping adding stuff to the game and making it more friendly and difficult as well. Overall good game, recomended.

Fun little game that could easily be a competitive game against friends to see who can progress to the highest point! Oculus rift CV1 seems to work fine with the game although little annoying to have to keep recentering when starting a new game although it could be an oculus thing but maybe worth checking out! Appart from that its a realy fun cute game!

I thought it'd be a fun little time waster, turns out it's incredibly captivating. Arm your little marshmallow men with garbage and throw them at orcs, and watch the show. Everything looks great, controls are intuitive and easy, all around a charming game. Well worth the money

Started with Ada and McGruber. Equiped McGruber with a dead fish and Ada with a wooden sword, then tossed them into the tower. Eventually they were joined by Smithers wielding a mallet.

Kicked ass.

Took names.

Bought stuff from mushmellow with epic mustache.

Rinse and repeat...

...Until they all perished fighting giant anthropormorphic mushrooms on level 25.

10 out of 10 will send McGruber into battle again.

DragonXR

Awesome game, had a bunch of fun and is really engaging,
random encounters will be limited but it dosent take away from the difficulty,
Items seem limited hower the more playthroughs the more options seem to be provided.

one got ya is
the Sentitive Options menu can cause loss of game data (i would change this to a trigger pull for an ok than a highlight....)
when trying to re-centre i accidently hit the "quit game", just simply highlighting will cause it to press the buttion.... very frustrating when your on a roll.

regardless of the gotya, plenty of hours expected of gameplay, yet to finish but still enjoyable :)

Big Purjo
Big Purjo

I gave the game a try but the controlls were not something I found very userfriendly.

I went into the game looking for Domina like gameplay of my guys and the enemy fighting it out while both are controlled by ai, with the goal of tying to outfit my soilders in better and better gear. This game is not that.

The game wants the player to controll everyrthing, but with three soliders and loads of enemies trying to be tactical is less about skill and more about hoping your guys do anything somewhat close to what you wanted. I can only share my experience so take my review with a grain of salt, but in the time I spent in game it was more frustrating than fun.

This game is very simple and good, BUT i really believe CONTROLS CAN GET BETTER, I hope developers can make take note of this as I enjoy this kind of games as hell. This feels like 'Battleheart' , mobile game, but in vr with adorable marshmallows, the difference is that in this one you play each time to see how far you can make it, so it have potential to have a lot of hours if it only have BETTER CONTROLS. Seriously I rather play with only 1 marshmallow fighter because of it.
****ADVICE TO DEVS****
- You have unused buttons, you can use 1 to switch between marshmallows, and then that could be one step for a better control.
Also, it wold be nice to be able to gather 2 items and toogle between them, could make strategy better.

Update 7/28/2018

The developer has abandonded this game. I would not purchase it.

.............

It's a very fun game. 50 levels and it's pretty difficult if you make a mistake.

I wouldn't say it's perfect, there are a lot of things they could improve, however, for an early access game and some updates/listening to the community this could be a real gem. It's already pretty fun as soon as you buy it.

If you are on the fence and confused about what you really do the basic premise is this...

There are 50 levels with enemies. You can control 3 marshmallow men (you start with 2, add 3 later, and they can die permanently until you get the next one)... The helmets/weapons can be bought with gems that you collect on each level that fall out of the sky randomly when you are in combat. The helmets determine the special ability. Some are a big ground pound that knock enemies off the level and kill them. Another is whirlwind like barbarian's in Diablo. One heals all of your friendlies... This is the point of the helmets.

Then your weapons have damage amount and pushback amount so you can knock enemies into pockets of lava or off the level if you have a high knockback weapon, or you can just hit them hard with damage.

You start over when you lose, so it's like an arcade type game....

There are a lot of things that can be improved upon, but the first run I went through took me about 1 minute per level and I died at 23/50 (trying to control three at a time is very difficult)... It definitely was fun and I was sad when my main marshmallow man wielding a mighty metal hammer and whirlwind barbarian helmet died. May Curtis rest in peace.

minion kurwa
minion kurwa

Surprisingly immersive. Very entertaining and somewhat difficult. You are a bit of a slave to RNG since its random what times will appear in the shop. I beat it on my second run when I was able to make a really tanky melee marshmallow and have two healer/archers support him. The controls can be a little overwhelming at first; it's not easy controlling 3 marshmallows at once but its doable once you get the hang of it.

adorable little marshmallow minions to do battle with little monsters/robots/mushrooms (lol) its great game, one of my absolute favourites that i have bought for my vive. highly recommended

This really is an adorable game. You get to outfit marshmallows with weapons and armor. Then you get them to fight through 50 waves of badies. You're job is to micromanage them, to help them beat each wave. It has a lot of randomness to it. So expect that some runs you will get some key items early on, and others will be a struggle. One recommendation for the devs would be to have the store be available at least every 10 levels, 5 would be nice, but may be a bit much.

This game will take a couple of runs to get how it works down. A big hint is all the helmets give them special powers. Some are key to beating the game. It is very beatable, but takes some skill. I'm looking forward to seeing what else the devs add to it.

Rykker
Rykker

Oversized helmets, teaspoons and fish skeletons for weapons with squeaky lil naked marshmallow men... what more could you ask for???? This is the first RTS that I feel was actually built and meant for VR... unlike other RTS' with wierd controls and trying to be traditional RTS with VR features added... There's no scrolling/zooming out/changing view angles etc etc. as everything is placed almost perfectly for viewing the game and controls... Each battle is played on a simple diorama like room that's randomly generated, and controls are quite simple and straightforward, your inventory and character stats are cleverly built into the environment as are the treasure and shops between levels that really bring in the VR sense of immersion...

I love how cute and fun it is. Just makes me want to snuggle them. I wish they sold stuffed versions. I hope they continue to add more cool and silly weapons, and a easy or invincible mode so that people like me can win all levels. I’d also like to see a controller co-op support so my hubby can control one marshmallow and help me.

Natti_Lin
Natti_Lin

I love this game!

One of my favorite things is that this game allows you to use your custom controller skins, something I don't find often enough in VR games.

The Developers are actively taking in any feedback and listen to their community. You have an issue with the mechanics or a bug? Let the devs know, and they'll talk to you about it.

But about the game itself:
-Acquire adorable Marshmallow People
-Equip them with weapons
-Throw them onto a monster-riddled platform
-Control where they go and who they attack
-Sell old weaponery and buy/earn awesome new weapons and helmets
-If one of your Marshmallows dies, you can earn a fresh one!
-Defeat Wizard Steve on level 50 to beat the game!

Pros:
-The graphics look fantasic and the monsters and weapons are very detailed.
-Devs are listening for feedback and apply updates
-While the game has an over-all cute feel, there are some less than cute monsters to keep the level of caution balanced
-Levels seem to be randomized every playthrough, adding to the replay value
-If you don't like a monster picking on your Marshmallow, you can throw a bomb (or a fist!)

Cons:
-The feeling of dispair when a Marshmallow dies
-If you take too long on one level, ghosts will appear and sap your health
-Thanks to the random level order, sometimes your low-ranking Marshmallows are overpowered early on
-If your Marshmallow dies, you lose the equipment they had

Granted, those last two Cons help attribute to the game's difficulty. I personally think the challenge makes the game more appealing, due to the greater satisfcation you get from beating it.

so, i already finnished this game. my thoughts. DEVELOPER PLEASE READ. the funnest part about this to me was picking up and throwing the little people and giving them weapons.

i found what the stoire sold to be rather limited, there are also some vary usfull glitches like being able to bludgeon the enemys to death if you walk out of bounds and stealing items from the store. if you where to make a more rpg like vertion of this game I WOULD THROW LOTS OF MONEY AT YOU. just imagen, there little marshmelow citys, and being given the option to destroy them.

Picked this up on sale this past week..Great game, love the design and character controls. Would Love to see more sophisticated levels with puzzles and more traps. But I love the foundation you have so far, it is alot of fun. Keep up the Great work! I see some potential for a good 2 player coop experience as well, though I admit this would likely require more sophisticated larger levels......

This game is a fun little VR game that I enjoy jumping into! It isn't complete as it's in early access but the team is working hard on it and pushing updates to keep it moving so if you find a bug, odds are it'll be fixed pretty soon! Great work guys!

I bought this game thinking i wouldnt really enjoy it. I mean it just didnt seem like there was much to it gameplay wise but after spending time playing it, i got to say i really enjoy it. It definitly has flaws that bug me, the one that comes to mind the most is how hard it can be to get the little mashmallows to do what you want them to. Example: say one of your guys gets low health and is about to die, due to how the game works you have to constantly tell the hurt fighter to run away from enemies since if you dont tell him otherwise he will auto attack anything near him with no regards for his safety. Doesnt break the game but little stuff like that can be frustrating. Overall it is an amazingly tight game though and fun to play with a good amount of replayablitity, i keep coming back even with the frustating mechanics i mentioned before.

Makes me want a full blown little dungeon crawler type game with diablo esque loots.

Pikachu
Pikachu

Bottom line: It's a cute fun game that is silly and challenging. I believe with continued updates and polish it will be a really good VR gun. The concept I dearly enjoy and the characters are adorable. This is a perfect game for kids and adults alike, easy to get into and hard to stay alive, but the challenge is good. Sometimes the RNG isn't fair (the first run through I got to wave 20 without any shops spawning for me so stuff like that needs work) but when it all works out, it's a good game. Get it.

This game has made me laugh so many times. Today I really, (again) laughed out loud as I saw the "pre-owned". Dev's, you have a sense of humor. thanks for this game, I enjoy it. :)
This game for me has been really great, simple yet challenging. I can easily go forth and beat Steve, with a few dissapointments along the way, this adds to the the title in my opinion, (a sense of revenge). 'Cause why would the enemy kill one of your cute, badass 'mellows? The wepons get a little repeatative, as do the helmuts, but this lets me know what those three marsmellows are packing, knowing roughly how well they will do. Hours have flown by with this title, this really kills time, ( what? food is done already? I had an hour set on it!) example. The recent changes most definitly added to this. With 103 hours logged, minus the 10 or so spent out of the head set, have been worth every penny.

FastLawyer
FastLawyer

I did not think I would like this game at all. It looked like just another tower defense or lemming type game or a very simplified RTS. In fact, it is none of those things at all.

It's a third party dungeon crawler. You're basically the boss of your crew that automatically attack anything near them. You're job is to keep them alive by any means possible. That usually means having them run away at the appropriate times and using your own powerups where you can swing the tide of battle in your favor with bombs or health pots.

You upgrade your little guys as you go along. Each playthrough is different. Battles are real-time. My main complaint about this game is that it can be very tough to control your guys. Especially when one is low on health and you want to keep him or her away from battle. I wish there was just a little more intuitive control over them. Just a tad bit more is all that's needed to keep the frustration away.

This game is a nice change from the FPS VR titles were used to getting. the dev team has a special game here. its like they know what VR really should be. its a unique style of game.

this game is a rouge doungon game. every level is different with each play through. every so often you get a vendor offering you differnt perks to buy(weapons, armor, HP boost). you dont really control your troops so much. you can give a little direction and also activate their supers but really you are there to observe the outcome. i would like to see some more control but thats just nit picking. (maybe like a gamepad take over the marshmellow and fight for the character) just a thought.

(Update 12/18/19

so its been quiet from the dev.. reached out a few times but nothing. the game is good but it still needs some tweaking to be a great game. pretty much abandoned by the dev. if you catch on sale then its a great pick up.. still a nice change of pace from the usual VR games

This is diablo with a silly team of marshmallows. Where you give them weapons by handing it to them before you physically throwing them onto the battlefield. Little marshmallows get names, bob and jill only get weapons after they have earned their kills.

You control their movements by directing a path, like drawing a line, they tend to do the rest.

Don't get too attached, like drago said, if he die, he dies.
