A love letter to rhythm games!

If you've ever played any of the Rhythm Heaven series and crave more, this is the game for you! If you haven't played Rhythm Heaven before then this might still be the game for you

The gameplay is very simple, yet challenging. The minigames all feature creative sound cues and rhythm, and there's a harder version of each stage as well! There's also pretty decent accessibility options to help adjust the precision requirements for newcomers to the rhythm genre. The vibes are also immaculate, I really love the dreamy theme and the somber atmosphere.

Bought this for myself and as a gift for a friend :)

This game is exactly what I needed right now, the only issue I have with it is that i wish it was longer. (not really the story ended really well if you ask me). Anywho, there are many reasons to love this game here are a few examples. 1) It can be very relatable 2)the music is AMAZING 3)the art style is very cute but not so cutely forced it hurts to look at it. 4)although its a bit silly at times it symbolizes and shows serious issues that some people are going through very well. 5) its a music game, we could all use a well made music game every once in a while. Anyways in summer I give this game 99999999999/10. :)

One of the first games I purchased on steam that I was actually really satisfied with. Kind of wish there was more maps, but it's actually a really good game for how big the team actually is. Hoping to see more progression of this game in the future!

This is a very pretty and aesthetic game. You can change the settings to adjust the difficulty of the game which is very good for someone like myself who is usually not too great at rhythm games. Very chill and relaxing.

Quick but nice rhythm game. Great music and aesthetics, and not super challenging but kinda hard gameplay. I would wait for a sale though, as you do only get about 1.5 to 2 hours of gameplay. (Unless you want to dive into achievements and hard mode, etc)

First impression on the day after release, I think something is off with the timing. When I played the first set of levels without enabling any accessibility, I found that the sound was not synchronised with the animation/perfect timing window and I was constantly docked marks for being early. This was alleviated with the Wiggle Room accessibility option and made the game properly enjoyable, but I have a few more issues I have with the game.

The practice rounds prior to some minigames give a poor explanation of what cues to listen or watch for. I somehow tended to be more confused by the the practice runs than the actual games. Desires was the worst of them in my experience.

In the Followers minigame, the input is counter-intuitive as a tap game. It makes more sense in my head that the phones are a trampoline that I must press and release a button on beats, but I suppose that might be what makes it challenging.

One more thing: I would like to see another accessibility option added to specifically increase the volume of audio cues, as some of them are very subtle and difficult to hear even with headphones.

As someone who loves the Rhythm Heaven series, it was great to see an indie take on that style of rhythm game. The overall concept is very clever, taking place in a dream. There's no need to try and explain why a guy is sitting in a flying chair while flying boxes with faces launch food at him. In turn the style and aesthetics are nice. It's definitely a very bright game, with light pastel colors and with settings befitting of a dreamscape. Each level had it's own look while still being cohesive and connected to the overall theme.

The music was great. Just like it's inspiration, the kind of music throughout the game varies. Each song is heavily influenced by the level they're a part of. Like Time has the ticking of clocks or Technology being chiptune. My personal favorite had to be Money in combination with the in-game audio cues.

The game isn't particularly long if you just do a simple playthrough of it. A single session of 4~ hours got me through it while going for 3 stars/rings for each level and a little bit of messing/testing with the settings. That's not to say there isn't replayability. Each level has the "Perfect" rank above the 3 star/ring rank which can be hard to master. I have yet to really try this yet, but I look for to my many failed attempts.

There's also the level editor. Once you've beaten both the normal and hard modes of a single level (not counting any of the final levels of a night), you'll unlock the editor for it. It lets you go in to create your own version of that level, giving you full access to it's audio cues and tempo shifts. It is a tad limited in some aspects, like you can only change the tempo to preset speeds and if a level doesn't have offbeat inputs it simply won't have them available to try, like with the Money minigame. That aside, it's a fun extra that was a pleasure to mess around with.

The many options this game has to offer is greatly appreciated. From your basic fullscreen toggle to a cam shake toggle and even a toggle that will change the colors more inline for a Steam deck. The audio having four separate sliders (master, music, sound effects and the in-game metronome) is nice as well. The accessibility options is very interesting. There's a toggle to make the practice circle show up during levels, the aforementioned metronome to play, for the window of error to increase to help with timing and even getting penalized less for early and late hits. These are of course all off by default and are there purely for those who wish to use it.

One big flaw I see is the calibration option. While the option for having an offset is always a must for rhythm games, I don't believe the game has a big enough calibration range. It's a simple range of 50 milliseconds of offset, either positive or negative. This is simply just not wide enough of a range, as most rhythm games I play I need an offset of around 200ms for appropriate timing. It was most apparent when I played the Mind minigame as it was the simplest for me to tell. There's also the feeling of my input delay constantly changing, though I'm still not entirely sure why that is. On some games it was manageable, but for others I was having a harder time with it. Funny enough the Time minigame was when it really made itself noticeable. As of writing, I saw there was mention of adding an input test for calibration. I hope to see the range will be increased along with the implementation of the test.

While the calibration issue is certainly one that can't be ignored, I still thoroughly enjoyed Melatonin. Its charm is captivating and the presentation is wonderful. I would recommend this game to any Rhythm Heaven fan or really any rhythm game enthusiast for some simple but tough fun.

I love this game. The art, the music, the unique levels. I love that this isn't just another guitar hero style music game. Each level was totally different and challenging, and super satisfying to play. 10/10 I would definitely recommend.

So calming. And I mean the overall aesthetics and sound with this game. I will say some of the levels got a little frustrating but that makes the game so fun! Just challenging enough to still have a very calm and relaxing time playing the game but not too easy where one would get bored.

Melatonin is a charming rhythm game with a chill vibe. Every level has its own unique twist that will keep you on your toes. Learning their tricks and mastering each level is extremely satisfying.

It is short, but... it's $15. You absolutely get what you pay for. It's a fantastic game.

I grew up on Rhythm Heaven back in the ages of DS... and Melatonin made me reminisce to that in a good way. I simply loved Rhythm Heaven. This game also has it all. Melatonin has really nice songs, and the visuals are pretty. If you enjoyed Rhythm Heaven, you will absolutely enjoy this.

Now I gotta bring out the good ol' DS and replay Rhythm Heaven that's probably been sitting stored away for years.

I don't even know where to start lol. Everything about this game was just mind stimulating. It's been a while since I've literally had my eyes locked onto the screen. The entirety of the game has been appealing from the visual effects, art, cuteness, to the rhythm, and to the entire soundtrack. This definitely did something good for my anxiety. It was just beautiful all around. You have to play it to experience it yourself.
This is a game that I see myself going back to just to keep my mind busy if I ever need it.
Bought this game on sale, however, even if it wasn't, it's worth the money.

This game is really fun! I like it and it reminds me of Rhythm Heaven, and it executes it very well. Some of the cues could be better in my opinion, but even then, the music and the colors are consistent across all mini-games. If you like Lo-Fi, and games like Rhythm Heaven, you should definitely buy this game.

What if Rhythm Heaven was purple and made you feel high:

Melatonin!

Seriously though, this is one of the best rhythm games i have played in a long time. Even if Followers makes me want to walk into the sea.

melder

A fun, original take on the Rhythm Heaven formula that has earned its seat amongst the games that inspired it.

The aesthetic of both the visuals and the soundtrack glues the varied levels together thematically, and makes the remixes feel satisfyingly cohesive. The final remix somehow made me feel nostalgia for the game I started just a few hours prior.

Melatonin set an extremely high bar and as a result offers only several hours for a casual completion. The quality / quantity trade off is definitely noticeable here - in a way that only serves to enhance the enjoyment the game has to offer.

A true must-play for anyone that enjoys music.

Now to go finish all those Perfects…

This game knocks it out of the park and scratches the itch for minigame-based rhythm game perfectly.

Positives:
- The music is very good and the vibes fit the various settings of the minigames
- The aesthetics are impeccable, from the color palette to the art style
- Very fun rhythm games, with interesting rhythms
- Every game has a 'hard mode' for a bit of an added challenge
- The input mechanics of A + Left + Right were used in different and interesting patterns, making all the games feel unique and fun, especially when combined in the 'remixes'
- A lot of accessibility options to allow anyone to have fun with the game

Negatives:
- Some of the games were a little difficult to understand at first, but it's compensated by the addition of tutorials, metronome and hit circle to help you grasp the cues more easily
- Quite subjective, but the crane game's 'quick cue' felt a bit too fast to react to, and it feels like you need to learn the song more than the other games

I highly recommend people try this game, especially if they are fans of the Rhythm Heaven series!

Excellent rhythm game. Follows closely to the proven working formula of rhythm heaven/tengoku. Later levels can get challenging, but overall a very chill aesthetic and vibe. Excellent soundtrack. Highly recommended to scratch that rhythm game itch.

The game is amazing! I really wish there were more rhythm based games out there. This one is very addictive. I love the levels and the simple design. It is crisp and clean. The "narrative" is easy to understand even though there isn't any actual explanation. I love the journey we go on with them and it is incredibly relatable. I just wish there was more! I definitely hope that they either add to this or are working on another game along the same vein. Absolutely, if you love or even like rhythm games, you'll love this!

This game is TRULY Amazing! I haven't had a game scratch the Rhythm part of my brain in such a long time, not since Rhythm Heaven For the 3DS. My only complaint was that it was too short! Beautiful artwork and animations. Some games had me wanting to punch my keyboard like Time and some had me fully bobbing my head like Desire and Dating. I'd 100% recommend this game to anyone who like rhythm and great music! I look forward to projects by this team in the future!

I've been wanting to play Rhythm Haven forever. Never got the chance. So I jumped on this when I heard Melatonin is like that. I'm pretty big into rhythm games in general.

So, I didn't expect I'd beat it in 3.4 hours. Honestly, thinking about it, it's not a big deal because Elite Beat Agents is pretty quick to beat too.
There doesn't seem to be any kind of unlock-ables... it's like, simply an experience. Some dreams are easier to understand, but a couple are harder to read. Nature and Social Media, I struggle with the most.
Nature because the drips are harder to distinguish since they want you to do the opposite of the sound. 1 drip = 3 splashes, 3 drips = 1 fill , but the drips are the same sound and they go '1 rest 3 and' for 1 fill. So you wait for the '3 and' and find out it wanted you to splash three times. Very confusing.
The music is very soft, only one with serious percussion was Stress. Other than that, the music pretty much stays within flavor.
Overall, this was a nice experience. I feel like, the animation is reminiscent of the styles we've seen in the industry, Bee and Puppy cat, Steven Universe, Adventure time, Bob's Burgers and even the Lofi girl we see studying endlessly on live stream. Definitely meant to be a game to unwind with. Thank you!

Melatonin is a really well done and fun rhythm game with a dream thematic. Don’t be fooled by its cozy artstyle and catchy beats though: some stages can be pretty hard!

Have you ever played Rhythm Heaven? I haven’t, so you won’t hear too many comparisons to it here, but if you do know the game then I suppose it’s my obligation to tell you that lots of people are saying Melatonin is a great Rhythm Heaven-like game. But what does that mean, exactly? Well, read on and you’ll find out!

In Melatonin, you play through the unnamed main character’s dreams. Most of the gameplay is divided into 4 nights. Each night is divided into 4 levels that can be accessed via a mini overworld of sorts, and a 5th level that combines all 4 prior and switches between their gameplay. Speaking of gameplay, it has the basic types of commands one would expect from a rhythm game. You have three buttons you can press: left, right and center (which is the one you’ll be using the most). Sometimes you’ll be prompted to press left/right together, or long press any combination of those three. That’s it.

At the end of each level, you get a star rating out of 3 maximum, if playing through normal mode, called score mode, and a ring rating out of 3 maximum if playing through hard mode. You need to accumulate 8 stars to unlock the 5th level each night, and the rings are just for bragging rights. Inside the level itself, you have your typical miss, early, perfect and late ratings for each note. If you hit a note in time with the beat/visual cue, you get the perfect rating, which awards you the most points. Late/early award you less points, and missing actually LOSES you points.

Each level can be played in four modes: tutorial, score, hard and editor. Score is your standard game mode, and hard is pretty much the same stage/melody as score, but harder and with variations in the patterns. These are the gamemodes that award you the star/ring rewards, and in fact, you need two stars in any given level to unlock its hard mode. Tutorial is basically what you would expect: it teaches you how to play the level. See, each level boils down to a rhythm game, sure, but they have different melodies and patterns coming at you, and the tutorial aims to teach exactly that. The game does a really good job at tutoring its player, which is great because… the game is pretty hard.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2902723871

On the standard accessibility settings, once you play on the “real” gameplay modes, which are score and hard, you don’t really get help. You don’t get an indicator on your screen telling you to press A at the right moment, no no no. You HAVE to recognize audiovisual cues and react to them at the right time, which is precisely why the tutorial is so important. And at the same time, it’s also why the game can be so hard. You can easily see examples of this in what are likely to be your very first levels played: dream about food and dream about shopping.

In dream about food, you have boxes of different types of food throwing, well, food at you. They have three attack patterns, all of which are, in fact, timed with different beats of the song, but you can also just as easily click A when you see the food pretty much on top of your character. That’s how I got through both score and hard mode with pretty good ratings.

In dreams about shopping, however, you have objects falling in a specific order with specific timing between each object. Once the full collection has fallen, you have to then swipe your credit card following the same timing in which they fell. Unlike the food dream, that shows the food reaching the character, here you have to rely on your feeling and on the beat of the song. This made things a lot harder for me.

Some levels also have obstacles such as clouds that show up and cover part of the screen or visual cues that randomly leave the screen for a while, which makes things even harder depending on the level. I fully acknowledge that this is a me issue, so I’m not complaining. I’m just saying all this to illustrate that each level is quite different from the one before and after it, and unlike other rhythm games like yakuza karaoke, you can’t rely on getting prompted to press a button around the time you need to.

If the game is too hard for you, you CAN go to the menu and turn on assists. There are 5 different assists. All of them can be individually turned on and off, allowing you to fully customize your difficulty. The options are: visual assist with the timing circle, audio assist with a metronome, increasing the window of time you can hit the button to get a perfect, less penalty for early/late hits and controller rumble, on by default. There’s honestly no shame in turning any of these on: at the end of the day, what matters is that you, as the player, enjoy yourself, especially with a game that looks and sounds this cozy.

Melatonin was hand-drawn, and the result is absolutely incredible and fully fits the dream aesthetic they were going for. The game looks amazing, and I can not stress this enough. But even better than its looks is its soundtrack, which is a relief given that this is a rhythm game. The tracks are vibrant, and they mostly work really well with the levels. I won’t lie that there were a few moments in which I felt like beats didn’t align with when I had to press the buttons, but I’m pretty sure that’s on me and my apparent inability to properly perceive sounds sometimes. Seriously though, words do this soundtrack no justice, so go watch the trailer!

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2902723888

You might notice that so far, I haven’t spoken on the game’s storyline, and that’s because… it’s not really a focus in Melatonin. You can infer a lot about the main character via his dreams and the little cutscenes you get between nights of him and his room, but that’s about it. While it IS really cool to learn about him via his worries and desires and the environmental storytelling of his room, the fact is that the story is mostly there to introduce the gameplay, which is absolutely the focus here.

As for issues, I didn’t really run into any on the technical side of things. I did, however, feel a bit of a disconnect between the mood of the game and its difficulty. I was absolutely expecting a comfy and cozy experience by the beats and the visuals, but instead I was massacred by a lot of the levels. This isn’t an issue, mind you, as you can adjust difficulty via the accessibility options I mentioned, but it was still quite a shock for me. And if you have epilepsy, beware, as the game does contain flashing lights and an epilepsy warning.

The level editor, which is the fourth option you get when accessing any level, also leaves a lot to be desired. There’s no effective tutorial for it, it doesn’t allow you to switch songs, you can only use the set pieces and obstacles that are within that specific level, and you can’t even export your levels. There is a chance they will update the editor to make it more universal, though, so check back in a few weeks!

All things considered, Melatonin gets my recommendation to any rhythm game fan. It’s a joy to play through, provided the difficulty doesn’t frustrate you and you’re not too proud to turn on the accessibility options. If you’re curious about the length, the game took me about 3 hours to beat to the end of the “story”. I did not get 3 stars/rings on every level, and I turned on the help for some levels. If you do end up getting the game, let me know how you like it!

I played the demo for this game and put it on my wish list. I was very excited when it got released and immediately picked it up. I really like the art and music for this game. I love lofi music, and every level was right up my alley. I enjoyed my time with this game.

However, I do think that this game is somewhat easy for those who are able to count beats, which also makes the game rather short. The level editor could make this more fun, but I'm not sure there is a way for players to share their levels with each other.

Also, one of the things that initially drew me to this game was the concept of playing through a dream, and I thought it would get developed more in the full version. I was disappointed to see that there was no storyline at all, and we learn very little about the person whose dream we're in. Overall, if you are a fan of rhythm games and lofi, I would get this game, but maybe get it on sale.

Amazing Rhythm Game with simple minigame mechanics.

Best thing about the game is probably the overall vibe and amazing Art/Animation. Everything looks nice and clean

Some minigames are better executed than others.

Pros to minigames that:
-Use contro tempo cues
-Use visual distractions
-Use tempo changes (would be cool if they included signature changes aswell)
-when music rhythm and minigame mechanic are well mashed together

Cons
-Some minigames have way too similar audio cues, making the game very hard to predict only by listening (some minigames that suffer from this problem are Time, Stress, Nature, Desire)

Other games doesn't give you enough time to react, cues are played too close to the button press (Time, Stress, Desire) but this can be fixed by doing different audio cues for each action (maybe adding a little secondary audio cue before the main cue that warns you that something different is gonna happen, like the lava raising in Stress or the fast lever in Desire)

Other than this is a quite enjoyable game

What I hope for the future support:
-Minigames having more actions (especially in hard mode)
-More sets of minigames (4 Minigames + Night Remix)

It would be nice if the game gets well supported to get more Set of games (Those either being free update or Paid DLC)

Overall great game if you want to test your rhythm capacity or having a different experience from the usual rhythm games

It's a piece of art, you have to experience this game more than play it! ♥️

rhythm heaven if it had an aesthetic theme to it. saw this on the micro trailers and picked it up on a whim, glad i did!

btw devs please add some sort of warning or grace period to "Mind" for the tempo changes 'cause i read that on another review and didn't understand until it happened. then i UNDERSTOOD. not great :')

Let me put my negative feels about this game first:
The artstyle is nice and good looking, but only for the first night of the game, after that it's tiring to see the same bright pink color everywhere. There's option to adjust the contrast so at least you can adjust how bad you want that blinding colors hurting your eyes.

For the "rhythm" part, the core gameplay feels tight and accurate, sadly the mapping for the beat is kinda underwhelming. Sometimes I feels there's too much blank or bridging part for no reason (very apparent in Nature song). There're some sound cue that I can't tell the difference but that was my skill issue. Mostly the sound cue for differentiating left/right/double hit.

For the song/soundtrack in the game, it's not memorable at all, ALL OF THEM. The Lofi/Chillwave genre for the theme didn't help at all. I'm sure I won't remember this game if I ever heard one of the game soundtrack outside the game. This whole soundtrack opinion might be just my very personal taste, but I truly feels underwhelmed with the whole soundtrack.
If I bring the rhythm heaven comparison, if I ever heard one of its game music I can really tell that it's rhythm heaven music and which minigame that song belongs, some of them even making me unconsciously tapping to the beat of the minigame. But yeah, it's unfair to compare.

As for the positive:
The gameplay is really fun, tight, and feels good to play. And I can see how passionate the dev about this game. There's even level editor with custom song promise for future update, I'm sold with just the "level editor" promise.
There's lot of accessibility option to help if you're having a hard time with this kind of game.

I'm still recommending this game for the fun of its gameplay, and depends on custom level implementation, this might be one of the good value game for its replayability.

If you're too attached to rhythm heaven, I will recommend to look over to "Bits & Bops" by Tempo Lab Games. since their game retain more Rhythm Heaven charm even almost feels like total copy (A great Copy!).

Finsihed it in 3 hours and it was totally worth it.

Have not tried custom levels yet, looks like the map editor offers extended mechanics not found in the story.

Its rhythm heaven with sleep deprivation. The music is fire af, around 2 hours of playtime going through the normal and hard stages. Do make sure that your brain wont kill you because there's flashing lights. Banger game.

Whether you think you are good at rhythm keeping or not this game will test you. It is fairly simple and straightforward but can be challenging too. Nice chill game with some nice head boppin beats. animation style is nice too, Gives me Adventure Time vibes. Play it, it's fun.

Melwing
Melwing

A beautiful game, hampered (ruined, for me) by inconsistency in what it constitutes as early or late. It seems to totally vary by each individual animation, making it take far more brainpower than I want to devote to something like this (which is admittedly not much- that's why I got the relaxing looking game called Melatonin).

I was looking forward to this for a very long time, but it was clear to me right away that this is the sort of "rhythm" game that's really just about pattern memorization, not rhythm. Watching for patterns to do twitch responses to is not anything to do with music, to me.

I suppose this is more an issue I have with the modern rhythm game genre, but I digress. I'm personally very disappointed in Melatonin, enough so that I'm giving it a thumbs-down even though I think a lot of people will really like it.

+Very cute game!

Great little rhythm game with a nice soundtrack. Has a nice variety of cute very random rhythm games. Only took me two hours to beat the game :( It's rare that I can actually complete a game within the refund time limit and I can imagine that coming back to bite them. I hope that they add some more content, otherwise this works out to about $7.50/hour of entertainment which is significantly worse than you can get for other games.

Working night shifts when this was released, but decided to hell with it, I wanna play it already! The game is called Melatonin by Half Asleep so I figured it'd be fitting to check it out for a bit while being tired after a night shift before catching some Z's.

This game is really fun! I love seeing the creativity in how they come up with all the mini-games. Very Rhythm Heaven like. I was so hyped for this and still am for Bits and Bobs too. This one did not disappoint so far. But... I think next time I will play it when the only melatonin present is the game itself. My timing will probably be a bit better, heh.

Valpnos
Valpnos

Great game, although quite short and quite easy if you've played rhythm games in the past, but it's a very well polished experience and the art, music and design is top notch. If you get the hang of the levels the hard mode feels a bit too easy at times, I feel like they could've gone further with it. Getting 3/3 stars (or rings) on all levels is not too hard, but perfecting every level (having perfect timing on every action and not missing) is a different beast which will take you a really long time and a good challenge for perfectionists.

I think any fan of Rhythm Heaven and/or lofi vibes will have a fantastic time with Melatonin. It's a super neat twist on a tried and true formula with tons of great stages. I found the whole experience very pleasurable from start to finish. Didn't go for any perfects, but I did just about everything else and I definitely plan to revisit it down the line!!

Between this, Rhythm Doctor and Bits and Bops, it feels like we're having a little rhythm game renaissance. I'm so here for it!

YESSSSS!!! This game is amazing! If you were a fan of Rhythm Heaven, or Rhythm doctor this is in the same vein. There are visual clues that are shown on the screen, that you have to repeat to the beat. The art style is absolutely stunning, and the music bops! Highly recommend grabbing this if you like these types of games.

It's a pretty short game, you can get it done in less than 2 hours if completion is all you're going for. Obviously more if you're aiming for max scores on everything.
But that's fine, because this game is an absolute treat. Soundtrack is pure vibe, levels are intuitive and satisfying to get a hang of. I think the final level (even if it's logical that it gained such a form) was a great send-off. Just go and get it. NOW

It won't show it on this review but I played the shit out of the demo for Melatonin, and I can happily declare that the full game did not disappoint. While I wouldn't mind a bit more rhythmic complexity in some minigames, the fundamentals are well done, the art is clean and very nice, the music is a banger and that's all I need
