I am 32 years old.

My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.

When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.

Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.

With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.

After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.

Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.

Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.

Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

Thank you.

Another nice JRPG from Aldorlea Games. Pleasant art and music, whimsical story. It is allot like the Millenium series but feels different enough I don't consider them the same game.

Allot of "bad reviews" seem to not understand that you don't play Aldorlea games in the afternoon as an adult addicted gameplayer - they are for night time for sain people (or for younger players). They are pleasant and relaxing before bed or for anytime to reduce tension or pass some time (ie, not all day). You also don't expext Enix best RPG quality when you paid $2 or what.

Difficulty - is selectable - you can play a harder game or not level up. Comments about easy battles are ridiculous. It doesn't force not winning or spending hours in the same area - that's for sure. It's your choice.

Anyone, and I mean anyone, reviewing this game negatively either doesn't play RPGs as a passion or is stuck up about minute details.

An unsurprising fact on Steam, as it's about as persistent as deceitful or lying reviews. The current top one is a stellar example. Half the people reviewing these games have no clue what RPGMaker is or how it works, needless to say their reviews reflect that perfectly, ya-da-ya-da.

The game costs 50 cents right now.
Don't act like a review shouldn't reflect price.

50 cents for a good game with a fun story/pace.
'nough said.

This game is on a level of bad that is beyond words.

There is no need to even get into the story aspect of this game. That's like giving someone on death row another 3 months of jail time. Who cares?

The level design is beyond atrocious. It's illogical, stupid, brain dead, and a huge waste of time. It takes a 10-minutes maze to get into a town/village. You'll be doing this numerous times because of quests and sToRy. The game calls them dungeons or something (I don't f**king remember, you'd have to pay me to play this game again and pay for the therapy afterwards) but it's a maze. Even though it's a straight forward maze with one entrance and one exit, it's probably designed by a psychopath who enjoys killing puppies. You'll most likely be walking for five minutes straight past multiple levels of the maze thinking to yourself "Gee, everything's going smoothly for once" before you get hit with a dead-end, because f**k you.

Monsters designs are a joke too. You can be looking at the love child of Anubis and Hades only to notice it has the strength of a zero EV/IV Zigzagoon. But be careful of some weak looking fellas, for they could possess the power that rivals 69 nuclear bombs combined.

This is the same case for skills. You can cast some insanely cool spell with so many flashy colors that'll send an epileptic person to the ER, only to see it deal 5 damage, and you can cast a spell that has the animation that looked like it's created with Microsoft Paint, and see it deal 50000 damage. Just roll the dice on this one.

You know you're scrapping at the bottom of the barrel when you're posting some (what I assume to be) German review and whoever "Jay Is Games" is. All of the positive reviews on this page have ZERO credibility, and I'm just gonna go ahead and guess half of them have been paid to write a good review, or is an employee from this company.

I would like to state one more time, that this game is SO BAD, that I am out of words to describe how bad it is. I actually went to steam support to get this game back (I had it removed on my account permanently, getting it back took me like 3 clicks) so I can write a review again to warn people to stay the hell away from this game. This game is SO BAD, that it made me wary of ALL RPGMaker games since.

Edit: Steam is now showing this review as pre-release. I don't know what the publisher of this game did on Steam to make it think it was in a beta before this, but it wasn't. It was sold as a full release, with collector's editions and everything. It is still a terrible game, and everything in this review is still valid.

TL;DR: This sort of game is the reason RPGMaker things on steam have such a negative stigma. It exhibits incompetence at every level.

I am now honestly surprised this game has net positive reviews on steam. I've been designing an RPGMaker game myself, and was looking around to see what sort of things had positive reviews on here. I have no idea what game the other reviewers were playing, but it wasn't this game.

-The writing is atrocious. It reads like a bad fan-fic of someone elses fantasy world. There is no consistency in writing or tone, nor of the world the people were trying to build. In a purely fantasy setting, why is one character talking about her CV(resume)? The opening sequence was so bad that I immediately closed it and tried to get a refund. Too bad I was past my date for it. None of these characters read like real people. The writing was so bad that the best choice the designers made was including a 'talk to party' function, so I could skip past the horrible writing and still be able to figure out where I had to go. You still have to talk to every inane, useless, and pointless NPC in town for fear of missing a quest, so good luck talking to thirty some-odd NPCs with such riveting dialogue that is important to world building such as "I love this carpet!"

-The battle balancing is also atrocious. You can be walking around a dungeon, fighting enemies that look like Hindu gods and Chimeras, and one shotting them easily, but 'deadly snake' can nearly wipe your party with repeated paralysis attacks. No warning or lead up, but I'm so glad that snake was tougher than any boss in the game I fought. You get no indication of what enemies are weak to or what spells work, so whether you choose attack or spells for a new enemy is entirely random, and so many of the clearly 'physical' characters have tons of useless attack spells as well, and quite a few casters don't get any attack spells for several levels that are of any use. You have so many spells to dispel an enemy's buff, but never run into enemies who actually buff themselves.

-There is a fundamental level of incompetence in the coding itself. A spell that casts 4 fireballs, will also tick you for poison damage or regen for each fireball. An item that says 'revives and restores 100 life points' will revive and restore you to 1. You will clip right through cliffs and forests in maps. You will cast spells and wonder if they actually did anything, or if the fancy animation was the intended effect alone.

-Map design is utterly ridiculous. Almost every map consists of 'overly long corridor, leading to dead end or to the next area, good luck picking'. Several -towns- are behind these dungeons, as well as quest items hidden in the inscrutable mazes that take hours to traverse. Thank god encounters aren't truly random, because I would have quit long before I did. Better finish those quests the first time you are in town, otherwise you'll have to treck through the whole dungeon again to get back...oh wait, the quest makes you do that anyway, because part of it is outside town. Several things are hidden in a dungeon, without any warning that you can never go back once you are finished, including quest items and summons.

-The 'deluxe' edition has the official guide, which probably includes maps. I wonder if it also includes the developer laughing at the fact that you bought a 'deluxe' edition of this game.

Do. Not. Buy. There are far, far better RPGMaker games for free, and even better ones available on steam.

i dont care if this game is another final fantasy! moonchild is one of the best rpg game i ever played so far. espeacilly storyline!

Faudraline
Faudraline

I've been looking for an RPGMaker game with a cheesy story that would offer some enjoyable dungeon crawling in my library and Moonchild seemed like an appropriate candidate. You know, the ones that you wouldn't spare much mental RAM for... and I've finally found it! Moonchild is a cute game that hails from Aldorlea Games - a really promising RPGMaker based developer team - that will easily offer you 20 hours of gameplay.

In a medieval fantasy realm, Queen Calypso's only daughter, Moonchild is abducted! Our honorable knight Gabriel was able to detain one of the heinous criminals, but the man apparently lost his memory. We start our journey to save Calypso's daughter. The word is that Moonchild isn't the only young noble woman who was abducted: daughters and wives of other local monarchs are missing too. During our travels, we'll consult the wisdom of elves, pass frozen wastes to find a Gifted in the ancient arts of mind, infiltrate the domain of our sworn enemy and even find a common cause to work alongside them. What kind of danger a mother wouldn't risk to take to save her child? It seems none...

Graphics won't present you anything extraordinary, yet I found environment design to be fitting and beautiful within the limitations of RPGMaker. The game rewards exploring obscure dead ends, so nowhere you explore is an actual time loss. You always find some interesting item or a power up. Soundtrack is pretty, yet it becomes annoyingly repetitive after a while, so I strongly recommend muting the game and playing your own soundtrack in any of these 16 bit games - with some exceptions like ASM or FF series, of course.

Someone said gameplay? Oh, it's nothing unfamiliar. We have a 16 bit party of 4 characters at a time - in which we can arrange and alternate with other characters anytime outside of a battle - , turn based battles with basic strategies, enemies with different immunities and weaknesses. We battle, we gain experience and level up, we search for new items to power up and complete a side quest here and then. See, it is your basic RPG. The world isn't that big, neither that diverse, but the main story itself would present you a nearly 20 hour gameplay and its engaging enough. The game also comes with 3 different difficulties for you to pick based on your experience with these kind of games.

I'd consider one minus to be achievements. They are mostly based on one specific character having a certain number of kills. It becomes boring to farm characters just for the sake of achievement, and it's a strategic dead-end. You'd already have a party formation that you like better by the middle of the game anyhow.

Another thing from the horse's mouth: the ending WAS an unexpected one for me, which is seriously rare in these 16 bit games. I didn't expect that outcome, not at all! You'd like a basic RPGMaker adventure with interesting enough story and cute characters? You've got it.

Now this is a cute little RPG, with a rather nice story and unique way of going about quests - although I must admit the twist was fairly obvious.

Overall the mapping was nice, only complain was the lack of a quick-travel option through dungeons, meaning you'd have to trot through the same long, windy dungeon several times to complete quests.

The game runs nicely, and I was thoroughly pleased playing it - I finished it in one go (ouch) without all sidequests, as I couldn't find #10, but I'm planning on getting the last few achievements at a later time.

Definitely worth your time if you like these kind of games!

Firstly, I must say that I like RPG maker games and my first impressions of Moonchild were pretty good. The characters had strong and captivating personalities and the plotline was intriguing.

But as the game progressed, the massive grinding and the unbalanced levelling system made me drop it at some point. I really felt unmotivated, even though I wanted to see how the plotline would evolve.

If you really like RPG maker games and is looking to play a new one, this is a "ok" one and you should give it a try - even with all it's flaws. I hope you won't get bored as I did.

Story isn't that great, pretty generic rpg with mediocre writing.
It uses default assets and isn't polished, having several bugs/inconveniences (collision detection: invisble walls, clipping through walls, unobtainable summons, rpgmaker poor xbox controller support/no d-pad, not enough analog deadzone, etc)

Pros: Nice maps
Different 'styles' to play the game in.

Con: Writing is piss poor, grammar and spelling errors on top of just horrible story/lines.
Game doesn't play well with steam can't shift tab to do anything else, often crashes when you alt tab.
No screen settings to change how big the game is, fullscreen or super tiny.

Another one of Aldorlea's games. This Steam version has some new unique art.
While the story in the game is not too compelling, it has enough pace to make you want to see how it unfolds.
The game has a few really powerful and, in my opinion, unbalanced spells that could potentially spoil the whole game for you if you get them early on(one of which is possible to get right at the beginning of the game).
Those aside, if you are looking for a few hours of fun, go ahead and buy it!

I wanted to complete the game before I reviewed it, but it just seems to be fighting me at every turn. The stats and mechanics are poorly explained, battles seem to run the gamut of effortless or tedious, with nothing in-between, and the dialogue is relentlessly awful.

That last point is what gets me the most, actually, so I'm going to go in-depth a bit on that:
1. Every character seems to have some little snark to throw in to every situation, regardless of relevance. This is tiresome.
2. It takes about 6 text boxes for 1 text box of information to be conveyed. The rest is fluffy, unfunny babble.
3. The dialogue has no mind for tone - hamfisted attempts at humor are thrust in everywhere.
4. The *actions/emotes in asterisks* are the worst. They're lazy. What they're attempting to convey does not even require custom sprites, and could be conveyed with halfway competent writing and eventing.

My only reprieve from the tedious, pointless battles is the aggravating dialogue (and vice-versa). This game leaves me feeling more stressed than a leisure activity should. It is not fun, and it is not even a tenth as funny as it thinks it is.

I'm Sorry What Did You Say?

I actually found this game to be kind of fun. It had a lot of ups and downs to it, but I would definitely recommend it for a good few hours of pretty laid back entertainment.

Enarius_Paradox

First off, if I didn't have annoying voices imagined for each character, especially the protaganist, or from what I've gotten so far, maybe I'd be more towards this game. It is also very cliche, at least from the start. Typical rescue agenda, with no idea of where to go, so you aimlessly wander until, surprise, you stumble across something. Another thing would be how RPG titles shouldn't do the map in that way, as it can become a bit disorienting, as you're suddenly going from normal scale, to you're pretty much a giant treading through things, and I'm not sure why she said she needed to get the horses? I never saw any- But irregardless of my views and certain wants for a game, this is a decent game if you have the time and patience for it.

Skip this title and go for better RPGmaker games.

I'll keep this short: Early game is awesome. Good action and decent writing. Later the usual JRPG grinding and massive dungeons come into play and it becomes a test of endurance. The #1 review of this game lists very accurately the bad sides this title has. (and i am being much more lenient here on the writing)

Oh i know fans of JRPG just love this but for me once the interest starts to wane it doesn't get better by throwing more of the same and harder in your face. Let me remind you that on Steam there are some terrific titles here that can either bring you good writing, good combat or both done better than this. Don't settle for sub-par garbage. RPGmaker games partially deserve their bad reputation and this game is here to remind why that is so.

I love Aldorlea RPG Maker games, because the developer is extremely detailed oriented and take great care in designing and implementing the games. Moonchild is a great example of such a game.

I played Moonchild approximately two years ago, and had a wonderful time. I spend 44 hours playing this game, and had a fun time getting all the achievements and exploring every little corner of the gameworld. I had an enjoyable time recruiting a diverse team of 9 characters, all of which have different skills sets. Out of the 9, I grind my group of 4 (only 4 out of 9 are involved in fights) until they reach very high levels of 40+. I love grinding and there are always lots of things to do and lots of side quests to work on in Moonchild.

I would like to highly recommend this game to any old school RPG Maker enthusiasts who likes a great storyline and a detailed game world with lots of things to do. You will love this game.

This game is what one would expect from an Aldorlea game, as in it has a good plot, nice characters, and is fun. The Moonchild of the title is an 8-year-old princess, who is kidnapped. Her mother, Queen Calypso gathers a bunch of friends to search for and rescue the child. As well as punish those behind it.

If you go into this game not expecting more than the usual, you should be fine.

Where to begin, where to begin? This like Dreamscape is yet another RPGMaker title from Aldorlea. In which I will concede this game for what it is, is pretty darn good. However this game unlike the other Aldorlea titles I've reviewed has one thing that is a bit bad about it, this game has no sprint. Which compounds upon this games mazelike areas rather harshly.

Despite this I find the slowness of the walk more engaging here. Since this game has a far more serious tone. And albeit its a simple story, I find it wholly enjoyable compared to super complicated ones. That and even though this is my second time through I will say that the final plot reveal at the end of the final dungeon surprised me still after trying to find any way to connect the dots.

That being said one of the other things that is a bit of a complaint is that the first 80% of this game speeds on by, and the final dungeon is a major slog. Mainly since there are so many side paths. That and unless you grind for enemies, getting all the achievements adds and extra I'd say 4-7 HOURS onto the game. I'm not kidding about that either, I would have made this review hours earlier if it wasn't for the Calypso 1k kills and the Om 600 kills achievements.

That brings up the other reason why I didn't make this review after my first playthrough. I completely missed Om. Yep there is a missable character! What's even more odd is despite this and how good he is (if you equip him with an evil shield he has no vulnerabilities) plus I believe he's naturally immune to every status effect. He has less than I want to say 40 boxes of text the entire game, and that'd be if you include the boxes for completing quests! He has virtually no impact on the story!

But overall I still say this is worth playing, and I hope this gets around to more people, so as to release stuff like the Laxius Force and Elendia Ceus onto steam.

Moonchild was the first JRPG I ever played, and I still consider it as one of the best of the genre. The story is about a queen whose daughter has been abducted and she goes a long way around the world to save her. On her quest, she is joined by a retinue of companions with diverse abilities, both martial and magickal (you can always have only 4 characters active in your party out of total 9 available). Combat system is not too difficult – even at the highest difficulty you should be able to push through most of the common enemies on auto-combat, but with tougher and unique opponents you’ll need every iota of your characters’ skills to win. I also liked the environment with richly decorated scenes, and the manga-style artwork fits the game nicely (thankfully it’s not overdone). Music is nothing special, but good enough to listen to during playing. To sum it up, Moonchild is a great JRPG game, and I can strongly recommend it to all fans of this genre.

TLDR: Progression feels very padded. Flat characters. Thin tropey plot. Uninspired dialogue. Detailed maps but the mazes are over-extended making navigation slow and tedious.

This comes across a lot like Princess's Heart. Except instead of an dislikable protagonist you just get a concerned mom having to solve the abduction of her daughter. Seems like it will veer into prophecy territory as more than one child was aducted and they have name like starchild, moonchild and whatnot.

You can tell whoever designed the maps had more fun than you would ever have playing it, the maps probably look great in the RPGMaker toolkit but when playing them the corridors are too long, dead ends are frequent. The dev tried to make up for it by adding some easter egg items that add +stat but since immersion and attachment to character is absent it is hard to care about those.

Itemization was a tad botched with everyone seemingly being able to equip mostly everything and the engine not doing a terribly good job of assigning specific roles and skillsets to specific characters.

Character sprites tend to overhang on top of the combat area which is presented first person which leaves it visually confusing and amateur in terms of polish.

Given the sheer mass of samey encounters you will have to wade through to get to the next plotpoint this game is best played on Casual and just standard attacking your way through.

In an hour and a half I managed to solve the amnesia of the initial plot hook and have to go an errand fetch for more missing child after. By then I was pushing near level 20 and I still had little to no relation to the sidekicks. The initial guard who accompanied me had seemingly defected on me without so much as saying goodbye. I was now straddled along with an elf and a scholar whom I dont know from adam and that follow me because they have a vague interest in what I am doing.

The amenisac guy belongs to a Protector clan which is at odds with the abducters whom have a name that starts with Z. The elf area is called Elevenia... Most characters you meet will either comment on their sprite (e.g. Im guard because I have large muscles. I dont have pointy ears as an elf because im still a child.) or their immediate surrounding (this stall is empty because im poor -- the bandits dont attack because they fear our leader).

Although this helps to contextualize the world a tad and keep it consistent, it also does not come across as very credible dialogue and almost feel like temporary placeholder text that the dev would had left in there to make sense of his map.

This is par for the course for Aldorlea games however. I sat on a chair in a dungeon and I got scorned with a random attack accompanied with a: Who dares sit on the evil throne? dialogue box.

At some point there is only so much repetitiveness one can take with such thin and weaksauce story. The combat trades quality for quantity and the maps albeit ambitious just are not very time efficient and are too padded, also since they go on for so long you end up seeing the same assets a LOT, they are intelligently reshuffled and the result is convincing, but still...

Conclusion: This simply does not really warrant soldiering on, I am assuming that at some point you track down some more children, maybe rescue some, but still are missing your own kid, or maybe you find the bad cult hideout and bust their ritual, or you have to prevent the end of the world. Then then good guys win, maybe the amnesia guy ends up dating the elfgirl because the game mentions that he likes her here and there. Thats what I expect and even if there was the odd plotwist in there it would be in the same tone and depth as the rest and would not be worth putting up with the product as a whole.

Removed local content permanently and hiding from library for declutter.

Overall I give this game about a 7.5. I'm judging it based upon other RPG maker and Aldorlea games. Basically, the plot in this one has a few clichés and overall the characters could have been developed a bit more. It's a pretty short game for an RPG, I beat this one in about 15 hours, on hard difficulty with not too much grinding. Note that I mostly played this game in offline mode, that is why my hours are low. What I really enjoyed about this game was the combat system. It was very smooth, fun, and strategic. The worldbuilding was excellent, as always. There's several large dungeons with lots of loot, the world map is fun to explore with lots of secrets and the side quests are pretty interesting. The fights are fun, I think that's what matters. Music was just average, no tracks stuck with me but nothing was horrible either. Overall, I would say this is a decent Aldorlea game, but if you're new to them I'd recommend starting with the much more epic and character focused Millennium Series first. 100% Achievement hunters do be aware that a few of the achievements are pretty grindy, but not impossible. One requires winning 666 fights with a character you get rather late in the game. Also of note, I used the DLC guide and I found it was worth the money for the maps and sidequest info. Hope this helps!

I have not completed the game because I ended up just giving up, so this review may not represent the entire game.

The story is fine, I like the idea. The characters could use a bit more background story to flesh them out, but that may simply be because I did not get far enough in the game (8 hours in).

I did not give up because of game difficulty or story, but because of the pointlessly horrible level designs and lack of any meaningful fast travel (at least at the point in the campaign I reached).

What specifically made me give up, was how tedious the levels were to navigate, usually consisting of large mazes with dead ends. You can argue that it's like that to hide treasure, since there often were that, but I feel like most of my play time was just hurting my thumb navigating the long small corridors and around unpassable obstacles like a flower. The pathing using mouse movement is basic at best; as in a straight line unless there's something in the way (which there always is), so I used a controller, which worked fine with the usual rpgmaker setup (although I couldn't remap the buttons for some reason).

If you have the patience to navigate the game world, then at a discount, I think I could recommend it for the story. For me, I just ended up more and more frustrated while trying to get to the story, until I just sighed for the nth and put down the controller.

Every game they make, this dev tries to do something new with the JRPG genre. This time they have given all items a weight value, which negatively effects the wearer, similar to how weight works in Dark Souls, so almost everything you equip is more like a side-grade than an upgrade, and you are encouraged by the game to think carefully about what you buy and equip.

It would be nice if they also removed the easier difficulty settings, since you can bypass the games interesting mechanics by just playing on easy, and for me I find that undermines the experience.

Nice waifus, and cheap as chips, it's hard not to recommend this. The devs really seem to care about the games they make. Give it a chance.

I found the game to be super slow, really plodding as you constantly grind against the ever respawning enemies. I wasn't grabbed by the story enough to make all the tedium worthwhile.

This seems like a pretty good game with nice graphics, but it seems like you have to wander around a lot trying to figure out which direction you are supposed to be going in. Right now I am trying to travel to the elven village from the palace where I started the game and it feels like it is taking forever.
