Normally I aint too big on football, but dammit this game is just too much fun! If you're like me and not big into most sports games I'll just say: at least give this one a chance.

This game was a hilarious amount of fun back on the Sega Genesis in the mid 90's.

It hasn't aged well in the least. Gameplay is still in the 90's. Commentators are just dumb and annoying instead of funny.

Give it a look for the nostalgia factor, sure, but don't expect to spend any time in this game.

UnfedPuppy

This game is absolutely nostalgic to the old days of NFL Blitz, though unfortunately not as 'rule breaking'. The game is awesome, brutal, and entertaining. Though there is little to complain about, as what you see is what you get, the one thing that is important to note is the difficulty curve. This game is not incredibly easy and if you are not aware of certain rules the game can get frustrating..."killing refs for penalty breaking'. One thing this game would benefit from is some for of character editing...unless there is and I just haven't found it. All and all, good game.

I like it better than Madden and EA.

Oh look, a football game that's not Madden.

Mutant Football League, is a game that is compared more in a way to Blitz Football from back in the day. This game takes violence and the term anything goes a bit to literally.

We have fields with mines, toxic acid, giant snakes, etc .. you can even bribe the referee, and if the other team gets pissed, the whole team will beat up the referee.

I'd love to know how the devs came up with such unique names for each team. As we all know, they're a parody, of actual NFL teams, and not only teams, but players as well. Good job guys!

This game is very humorous, fun and arcady. It's a great game. I only have two negatives. Way to many penalty calls. It gets annoying sometimes. And it doesn't matter what difficulty you play, the AI will always have the upper hand. I've never seen so many interceptions in my life. I can throw a hail mary, and it will get intercepted. It's so damn annoying.

Pros
- very fun game with nice teams

- as hardcore as this game may look, it doesn't lose the feeling of football. Putting the violence and all aside, you're playing football. And it does a good job at it.

- humorous commentary and messages from players they all like to trash talk.

- unique fields and each with its own difficulty/hazards

Cons

- way to many penalty calls

- 9 times out of 10 you will get intercepted

- teammates die a little to often

In conclusion, I will recommend this game to anyone who wants to enjoy a football game with some uniqueness on the side.

Is this a Madden alternative? Um yes I guess! Is this game better than Madden? Um NO!

People who say this game is better than Madden are trolls. Madden is the real deal when it comes to football. You can't get any better than that. This game is football on steroids. Don't get it twisted.

Fun game, it's cheap, and it should be on every football fan steam's library.

Quite enjoyable.

It's a funny game where teams of mutants compete in a game of Football that involves explosive balls and chainsaws. However this over-the-top, whimsical concept actually provides a competitive game of Football in the end.

Plus, it's not Madden ;)

Pros:

Quick Arcade-like Gameplay
Fleshed Out Rosters
Challenging Dynasty (early on)
Power Ups and Stadium Hazards
Decent Customization of Playbooks
4 Player Local Co-Op
Online Multiplayer

Cons:

Repetitive (Needs more game modes)
No Video Playback
Repetitive Announcer Dialogue
5 Season Dynasty Limit (and no way to export team)
Some achievements no longer attainable
No Online Co-Op

Solid Game, easy to learn, with tons of carnage. Lacking in some respects, but given this is only the second game from a small, self publishing developer, I applaud the effort. I will easily be sinking in another 50 hours into this game, especially with constant team DLC coming out. Here's hoping for a new game mode or two at some point.

It's the next best thing to playing blitz the league and like if spike tv made their version of blood bowl. All and all I'd give it a solid 7.5/10

The homage to the classic Sega Mutant League Football. I played that one so much then, and I play this one just as much. The stadium designs are top notch. They do really well with keeping up on current rosters to mirror the NFL since they are all a parody. Gameplay has the classic MLF melded with Blitz feel, and it's endless hilarity.

HappyHappyGameGame
HappyHappyGameGame

It's NFL Blitz with monsters and the whole thing is a funny football parody. 10/10 one of the best sports games on steam! I prefer this to Madden most of the time, and the games are way quicker. My one critique is that sometimes the action seems like I'm being slowed down. I think the game would be better faster. And there should be a tweak on the auto-subs. Your QB and RBs are vulnerable. If your opponent has the Kill QB trick, you're really wise to start the 2nd string QB.

Should I get the DLC? Yeah!! It's like just a few bucks, and it supports the ongoing effort and creativity of the designers. Notice that Bomb Shady moves to Tampa instead of you having to buy a whole new game? Way better.

EDIT: Years later, still love this game. Love the new updates. Could we get a few more halftime minigames? A little mix up there would be nice.

This is by far the best modern football game on PC.
It doesn't have all the features that I wish it had (custom plays and instant replay are the two at the top of my list), but it feeds the "madden itch" quite well, and doesn't require jumping though 50 hoops to install and mod madden '08.

This game is better than Madden, it's cheaper, and it has a lot more humor and of course violence to it, as it doesn't take itself too seriously. This is definitely the best football game I have played in a long time, and I can't wait to unlock and buy all the other teams.

Extremely fun American football game. It's got monsters and crazy powers but also a great franchise mode. If you turn off the powers, it's a fun 7-on-7 simulation game that lets you create a new, customized playbook from the plays of defeated opponents.

Remember how BS NFL Blitz used to be? Yeah....that's this game. It's fun but total BS at the same time. Worth it for nostalgia if you remember the original and can get it cheap but overall it will frustrate you. I'm 50/50 on the recommendation.

Very fun, fast paced football game with intriguing Dirty Tricks and very fun gameplay. The Commentators make this game! Very much enjoyed this callback to the old Genesis games.

NeroTheAngel

First of all the game is pretty good and a lot of fun. It feels like the good old games on the PS2. Loud noises when you scroll through the menu, the graphics like back then, cool music etc. The main thing is that everything has a big impact. If you come from the PS2 era, you'll love it and maybe even get a little nostalgic.

However, while the game itself is really good, the Dinasty mode is very frustrating, even though, as far as I can tell, it is the core mode in the game. There are a few other modes, but I think everything rests on the Dinasty mode.

What is the Dinasty mode?
Basically you start out as a team of rookies and have to work your way up, win games and become the best team in the world by winning tournaments over several seasons. Players can be injured or can even die forever. So you have to buy new players and improve your current players to get better. That also costs money, which is why it hurts more when a player dies who has been around for a long time. But THIS makes it so fun.
So far it sounds very cool and entertaining. BUT there is a big problem. Because, based on the story, you start as a loser team. So you start with an overall team value of 45. This shows the average strength of your team and you increase this value by improving your players. But unfortunately all other teams start with their normal team value. As in every sports game, there are ready-made teams, which vary greatly in strength. There are teams that are better and teams that are worse. Depending on the team, it's Team value is between 65 and 95. It's pretty unfair and very frustrating, because if you're not a pro in this game, you just keep losing, buying new players and your money slowly falling towards 0. In my opinion, the mode still needs to be overhauled so that the other teams also start weaker and just keep growing in strength with each additional season. Or the value of the opposing teams should vary with the level of difficulty.

As I said, this game is very cool and lots of fun. Since you can unfortunately only rate the game "positive" or "negative" and not "Its ok", I am giving a negative rating here in the hope that the developers will see it and work on it. I recommend it for everyone who wants to play a fun fantasy sports game or with friends for fun. But if you want to have fun with the title for a long time, you have to go into Dinasty mode and this has to be overhauled first. So please see this review as "Its ok" rather than "bad".

NFL Blitz with mutants and murder! LETS GO!

Clarridge42
Clarridge42

Reminds me of Blitz from back in the day. the unique team abilities are cool and can dramatically change the game. Good selection of teams and variety of player types (orc, skeleton, alien, werewolf) that all seem to have slightly different base abilities and affect how cheap certain stats are to upgrade in dynasty mode. Dynasty mode feels challenging but as I near the end of the first season, it feels like each win is really earned and I'm not just a football game you can play in your sleep. fields have unique hazards that can injure or kill your players as well, so some plays work better when in certain areas of the field. I'm having a blast, and honestly would look forward to similar titles from this company in the future. If they could capture all the missing feature the Madden franchises have ditched over the years, I'd double down on this series even harder.

Recreation of the original Megadrive game. If you liked that, buy this. Just do it.

For others, 7 a side american football game with mutants (obvs), chainsaws and mines. Awesome fun. Genuinely end up, most games, in tears of laughter. My favourite play so far, using a special Ginormous play (while on defence), killing all the CPU players on the pitch and then accidentally running into a mine while my team followed me to the endzone. Result: 14 players dead. Awesome fun. 10/10 would run into the mine again.
The commentary humour is pretty good the first few times round. Graphics are good. Music is awesome. Sound effects great. And its pretty challenging game at higher difficulties. Very suitable for quick 10-15 minute sessions. To be honest, if you like American football or dark humour, pick this game up.

I loved this game as a kid. I THOUGHT I'd at least enjoy it a little as an adult. It;s horrible. the computer cheats so unbelievably hard on NORMAL. That's without the cheats on. You want exciting football where your players are constantly double teamed relentlessly where if you pass it's an interception, or try to move from ther pocket and throw an interception or get sacked? this game is for you. It's terrible, the AI is terrible, and I'm going to do my best to forget I ever played it

Very nearly great. I loved the original, and while I'm old and find the slowest setting still too fast (this is Blitz, not a strategy game), this is a great sequel. This games got skeletons, robots, demony boiz, xenomorphs. It's wild. It makes for a very fun game that can be taken as seriously or goofy as you like. The RPG mechanics/Team progression is very good while also being light-hearted and high energetic fun.

Considering the price a very good value football game. You can play it as an arcade football or you can ramp up the carnage and enable "Dirty Tricks" like the ball carrier clearing his way with a shotgun or defenders becoming electric and inducing a fumble upon a successful tackle.

Most teams are parodies of actual teams and their "Scouting Reports" contain some good jokes at the expense of the state of the franchise (at the beginning of 2020/21 season).

All in all, a fun and reasonably priced game. (with the added bonus that it saves from having to do business with that other publisher of sport games)

CTRLhasESCaped

Not as good as the original Genesis game I put too many hours into as a kid, but it's not bad. For an arcade football game, I personally would just prefer an NFL Blitz remake so it would be a little closer to actual football. That's just me though. If you like bad comedy, zany events and arcade football games, you could do worse.

the Terminator
the Terminator

I like it. I used to play the original back then and occasionally the last decade. This game is very true to the original imho and makes some good changes. It feels a lot like madden (UI, controls, etc.) but is quite different when it comes to gameplay. It's a bit more "arcade" if that makes sense and you also have the mind games and strategies around dirty tricks which give it a nice kick.

For me the dynasty mode did it. Franchise mode basically. You got 3 years to play in the Mahem bowl with a team of rookies and some cash for new players. I really loved the format.

Sure there are things that could be better or more diverse when it comes to commentary and animations and things like that. But overall it was a good buy.

Player names are quite fun. You have to pay for some teams, but it’s not much and I like to support small developers too.

If you are looking for a serious football game, that is a perfect simulation of the NFL - skip this. If you want an insanely silly, hilarious game, where you will have just as much (or more) fun 'killing' the opposing team and making them forfeit because you have killed all their quarterbacks while the announcers embrace your inner 14 year old's sense of humour, welcome to your new favorite game.

Finally a good football game that isn't made by EA sports

it has the classic feel of nfl blitz, with the spice of being set in a post apocalypse

with parody names of nfl teams that are honestly a bit clever in some cases

And there's a demo so you can try the game out before you buy it, which is always a big plus in my book

The game is a lot of fun to play. It is simple arcade football action that is both fun and engaging. It controls really well, which doesn't sound like much to rave about, but it feels good to play. The players are very responsive to your inputs, which if you're coming from Madden will feel amazing because Madden players control terribly. The game's art style is likewise simple, but it is inviting and enjoyable to look at. And the commentary by the announcers is great! I laughed numerous times hearing their banter.

All and all, this game is well worth the purchase. I can't wait to play the sequel. And I'm hoping we'll get a Mutant League Hockey out of them eventually as well!

Crassius

Yeah its fun. But the Ai and playing against it is silly. My O-Line is solid yet pressure on my QB is constant to the point where it feels like the AI is cheating. The dynasty mode with its limitations of upgrading players is extremely flawed. Cool, I can only use a certain amount of points each week. Why? Just let me upgrade my players with my available capital. The info on how the mechanics work are also extremely limited. This 'Time' style approach is no good. Feels like a mobile game. The visuals and voicework are solid. It bugs me a bit that I had to pay for extra teams. Micro transactions are lame, just give us the content we paid for, or raise the price of your base game. OR have a roadmap so we know that there will be extra costs down the road. Whatever. My biggest complaint is the balance in Dynasty Mode. I already have the worst team in the league, now my starting QB gets killed in the 1st play on normal? How the F am I supposed to progress? Better AI and a more balanced approach to Dynasty (with maybe some deeper options. Let us make our own play schemes!) with FREE team DLCs and/or higher base cost for MFL II. Overall I do recommend this game because it does capture the feeling of Mutant League Football, is Arcadey fun, and looks great.

Don't play the computer, you'll just lose to AI shenanigans. Score a touchdown to pull ahead? Too bad, you get a penalty for no reason. I only get a limited amount of the Dirty Tricks, but the CPU gets to spam them? Seems fair. The commentary gets old. This game was fun for an hour.

Félicette

I haven't had this much fun with a sport game in ages. MFL scratches that football itch and so much more :

Gameplay wise it's a perfect mix between brutal arcade violence and strategic decisions, both in offense and defense. It's immediately fun to play, but it does seem to have a good learning curve with deeper mechanics. I would recommend to read the PDF manual of the game, which is well written and quite explanatory for beginners.

The dirty tricks are surprisingly well thought and really add a more in depth strategic aspect to the game. I found the gimmick a bit goofy at first, especially the refs bribing, but I have to admit that it really adds some value and is well balanced overall.

The rosters are pretty cool. I wasn't sure about purchasing the different DLC at first but the added teams and stadiums with various on field hazards are really a nice touch to an already generous game content wise. You'll recognize many NFL teams and players presented with cheesy puns.

I haven't tried to play online yet, but single player modes are cool though, especially the Dynasty one.

Overall I'm having a great time, I highly recommend this game.

If you miss NFL Blitz, hate the way Madden is going, and want tricks traps and murder in a football game, then this is for you. Also has updated roster support and the old announcer from NFL Blitz and NBA: On Fire Edition with uncensored commentary. Worth the $15 I paid for the Dynasty Edition and all the add-on teams so far. They don't have all the teams from the NFL parodied, but that may change if the Bengals win it all this year. Has a season and a challenging Franchise mode. Great game.

A return to the era of fun arcade style sports games that is greatly missed, offensive humour included. Really hope this team gets to do more sports titles in the future.

Update: Game has a deceptively steep learning curve that is very off putting for new players. I have learned the game is very dependent on your AI teammates & a lot of the time bad plays are entirely out of your control. A lot depends on team/player stats, so if your teams overall is 20 points below the opponent expect a loss. Expect a lot of frustrating interceptions you cannot prevent. Hope its sequel focuses more on a more fun & old school arcade design.

I'm not good with football games whether it's Madden-related or even the old school Mutant League Football since I'm more of a baseball/hockey/wrestling type. However, I picked this game up anyways because I really loved the Mutant League series in the Genesis era of gaming. It tags a lot of what made Mutant League Football as good as it was. Things like bribing the referee, killing the referee, the over the top names for teams and even field plays. It's all here in spirit which I can only give it lots of points for.

It's also nice to hear the commentator who sounded familiar to me at first, but it turns out he's the commentator for the MLB Slugest series. For anyone who remembers them.

Really a shame that this game didn't really gain a lot of yards (oh a football pun) in it's crowdfunding efforts, but kudos for pursuing the goal anyways. The right person for the job did help make this game, the original designer from Mutant League Football so it stands to reason why this successor retains a lot of it's spirit.

Some of the things that could pull you a little out of the moment in this game, is the animations where you can tell they just insta-snap to the next animation like when a player goes to throw down another. I think I even saw a kickoff where the player's foot didn't even touch the ball.

There might be a limited appeal of this game since it's kinda niche, when most sports gamers just want to play whatever 2K or EA shovels out every year. I have a soft spot for novelty sports games like MFL that just want to do something a little different for once! We need more unconventional sports games.

I'm sorry I couldn't really delve into much of the gameplay, to me it's just football with carnage as an added bonus. The real perk is that it's Mutant League Football just modernized. I really really hope there comes some day, the Mutant Hockey League.

If I had to play a sports game I would choose this. The game is an arcade style football game mean't to parody NFL teams and player rosters. If you are and avid fan of the NFL i think you will get a kick out of the roster list names. The trick plays add to the sheer chaos in the games with my favorite having to be this sticky ball play. As a stand alone game is blows EAs Madden games out of the water in creativity and stability while also adding its own unique flavor to football. - Overall 8/10

The only way to make American Football remotely interesting enough to play.

if you're familiar with what this was inspired by, it is absolutely worth it. If you aren't, give it a go and see if it is up your alley. but if this rings 90's SEGA Genesis vibes for you, then yes, this is what it looks like. I'm so happy that this exists.

Honestly, a lot more fun and funny than Madden. Just the right mix of fun, humor, and violence. If you ever enjoyed the old Blood Bowl games this will be right up your alley and if you're just a football fan, this will probably still be a good time.

A modern take on a classic genesis game. Dynasty version is worth it, makes it more fun to progress a team through a season.
