Great if you like the ND games, but on this one I recommend choosing Amateur because there is a deeply frustrating and long puzzle right at the end of the game otherwise.

Kinda wish there was a autosave feature in the game, but overall it was pretty good. Also that god damn soundtrack scared the shit out of me , I felt like someone was following me.

Engaging and fun. First ND game I've played since a decade ago. Fun mystery to unravel with good characters! Had my family play with me together for fun as well as I clicked the game. Was fun (and sometimes stressful! haha) to work together to solve problems. Would recommend!

I adore Nancy Drew games. This one isn't my favorite but I did have a good time. The puzzles weren't too hard and the story was good. There's plenty of spoopy ghosts to give you a jump scare and even what looked like an armadillo scampering across the floor at one point. The ending was a little lackluster but it's Nancy Drew, what can you expect? The game is very well fleshed out and there's a lot to explore and to discuss with other characters. It has a lot of depth for a Nancy Drew game. 8/10

As an avid player of all of the Nancy Drew games, I love this particular title. It's one of the scarier Nancy Drews, just behind Shadow at the Water's Edge. I also love the beautiful atmosphere of the abandoned, rotting Thornton Hall and all of the foggy, Spanish moss draped trees. The music in the game is top notch as well; definitely one of the best Nancy Drew soundtracks to date. The puzzles are challenging, but not impossible; the story is layered and a touch complex. The characters are well thought out and it's pretty hard to nail down the culprit until the very end. Overall, this is an excellent addition to the Nancy Drew catalog.

The puzzles were definitely harder in this one, with it being a bit of a longer game, there was a lot more to write and remember what I had done/picked up and where it all went/what there was to unlock still. I definitely recommend the game, but not for night time!

I've been playing Nancy Drew games since I was a kid, and I'm a lot more critical of the games now. This one did NOT disappoint. It had everything I remember loving about the older titles - good puzzles, engaging intrigue, excellent voice acting - but it feels a lot more polished than the older ones, with more complex characters and a layered storyline.
There were a few moments where I got stuck and had to look for a walkthrough, but not enough that it made the game frustrating or unsatisfying. Sometimes the game was a bit too dark to really see what I was doing, but other than that it looks a lot better than the older Nancy Drew games, although it retains some of that uncanniness in the way characters move (but I'm attached to that, so I liked it!)

There's nothing actually wrong with this game, but I'm not going to play it again... I found it pretty boring although it did have a good and pretty surprising ending so that's a major plus. It only took me 6 hours from start to finish and it costs almost three times as much as some of the other, older games that I really enjoyed playing. TL;DR: It was okay. Would I pay $20 for it knowing how blah it is and how short it is? No. If you're going to play a Nancy Drew game I would pick a different one to start out.

This is one of THE BEST Nancy Drew games in the series. Everything from the plot, the writing, the puzzles, and the environment is amazing. The game has a beautiful Southern Gothic ambiance and is one of the more spooky installments in the series.

It's spooky. It's fun. I craze this game for it's atmosphere and puzzles. I'm a bit biased, since I love a good southern flavored mystery. I also love ghosts. If you love the Haunted Mansion, then you'll adore this game.

I'm a little torn on this game but I would recommend it more than not. It started out great! But about 2/3 the way threw I got stuck and had to consult a walkthrough and had to continue using it for some of the rest of the puzzles. The atmosphere is fantastic, but I would have enjoyed using more of the later discovered places to help solve the mystery. You spend a lot of your time figuring out how to enter a bedroom and a crypt but get little play time in both. Regardless, if you are a Nancy Drew fan you should pass this up. The characters are voice overs are great, especially Harper! And the spook factor is up there! I really thought my eyes were playing tricks on me here and there.

Positive: As a huge Nancy Drew fan I can easily say that Ghost of Thornton Hall has the best story line since Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon (my favorite Nancy Drew). The cut scenes are really awesome and the entire family dynamic is well thought! I also liked the balance of puzzles to conversation. In many other Nancy Drew games I felt like I was always having to talk to a character or I was hit with too many puzzles and not enough direction to actually solve them.
Opportunity: I would like to see new puzzles. I recognized several of the puzzle formats from previous games. The "new" puzzle was a modification of nonograms which was even more frustrating than actual nonograms from Shadow at the Water's Edge. Which if you read the reviews for Shadow at the Water's Edge was wildly unpopular.

This was my introduction to both Nancy Drew and point-and-click games, and what an introduction it was! I love this game so much. From the southern gothic aesthetics to the multi-generational family melodrama to the complex and mysterious characters, the story and artistic direction of this game is possibly the best of the series (there's a reason that the image of Charlotte Thrornton's ghost in her red dress has become practically iconic in the Nancy Drew fandom). Each level you dig on this family history makes the narrative richer and more fascinating, though like a real historical family, you'll be frustrated that you can never know everything. The puzzles are fun and engaging while being well-integrated with the story. I will definitely be going back to play this one again.

Provided a few of those good jump-scares you hope for in Nancy Drew games while having you solve some good puzzles. Gonna have to take some notes to keep everything strait as you solve! Multiple endings available too!

I have played a lot of these Nancy Drew games and honestly, this one felt kind of easy and... boring? I finished it in less than 7 hours, and usually these games take me twice that long, if not 3x. For how much this game cost, it doesn't hold up to the others I've played. Puzzles were repetitive and easy, the mystery wasn't really that surprising, and the whole house was so dark that it made it difficult to find things at times. The story wasn't altogether that interesting either. Overall, this was very meh.

I've wanted to play the Nancy Drew PC games since I was a little girl, but my parents couldn't afford it back in the early 2000s. Now, 19-year-old me is happy to indulge in the early Christmas gift of the "Scary Nancy Drew Games Bundle" thanks to my loving husband. The Ghost of Thornton Hall was very fun to play, especially if you enjoy puzzles, fun easter eggs, and a couple of jump scares (I honestly thought that an older game like this wouldn't scare me, but I screamed quite a few times)! Admittedly, some of the puzzles were very difficult and I had to use a walkthrough, but the rest of the game is really fun, interactive, and engaging (I played 7 hours straight and couldn't get my eyes off the screen). Good luck, sleuths!

By far the best ND game out of the 10 or so I've played so far. Wonderfully atmospheric, great story, great characters and the puzzles were mostly fun and not too difficult to figure out while still being rewarding. I recommend playing this game at night with the lights off, you'll get some delicious scares and the music makes everything perfectly spooky. All in all highly recommended.

This game had a nice progression and just the right amount of eeriness! A few things I didn't like were the wacky character and ghost-deaths, but beyond that, the puzzles were fun, the characters were interesting, and the "mystery" was more complex (compared to others in the franchise). Overall, would highly recommend!

This game was super creepy. Not only were there quite a few jump scares but the atmosphere and background sounds definitely put it over the edge! Some of the puzzles were really difficult and it got tedious after awhile but if you're looking for an atmospheric, haunted house vibes kinda game with lots of challenges, I would recommend this one. I'm a fan of easter egg stuff and collectibles and this game had a bunch of those. Unfortunately the version I have doesn't allow for key chain collecting (or so I've heard) but there are three easter eggs to discover! One complaint was that there's quite a lot of talking in this game lol and sometimes the screen was so dark that I had to either squint or adjust the lighting (I mostly stuck to squinting) so yeah, there's that. Overall game play I'd give it a 3.5/5 and for the scare rating I'd say 5/5.

10/10 Nancy Drew game. Absolutely fantastic. Things that were great about this game:

- Everything

I'll expand a bit more. The story was spooky from the start, turning from a disappearance to a full-out murder mystery with plenty of good scares. The map was excellent, with new locations to explore spaced out evenly throughout the story. The characters were rounded and interesting, each with a dark history to uncover. The puzzles made me use my brain, which is always appreciated (the puzzles also gave me Shadow at the Water's Edge flashbacks... those nono-reno-whatevero-grams, woo!). Challenging and fun, this game kept me engaged.

a VERY good game with a VERY good story line, but its really easy to get bored in this one because the story isnt straight forward. You have to do side quests in between the main quest and sometimes if you dont do it in order some things dont trigger in the game :3

If you love jump scares, yes to this game! I've played it many times and I know the storyline well but they still have jump scares that get me! I love it. The atmosphere is nice and creepy, graveyard included. The puzzles are super fun and some are a challenge! You also have an opportunity to choose your ending, something that makes this game stand apart from many of the other Nancy Drew games.

If you like Nancy Drew games and are thinking if this game is worth it, allow me to make you get it with one simple phrase: you can skip dialogue lol

In all seriousness though, this is a very well made game, the puzzles are interesting, there's nothing annoying like big mazes or overly complicated tasks, everything is relatively simple and easy to follow. But not too easy of course. Just the right balance. The graphics are also pretty neat. Will definitely replay this game in a year or two when Ive forgotten it a little.

Ever since I discovered the ND games, I was hooked. I just love them. They are totally my kind of game - the gameplay, the puzzles, the stories, even the humor (yeah, it's there ;)) is exactly my preference.

When you think about playing ND, you should be aware that it is a linear game/story. There is no variety, you can't choose your own story or ending, but have to follow the steps the game wants you to. There is either win -- find the perp -- or lose, which however doesn't end the game. If you die (yep, possible), you simply start from a few moments before your wrong decision and try again.
Tipp: Go ahead and make the wrong decision. You won't regret it ;)

In that regard I suppose the game is pretty harmless and simple. It's not exactly challenging. If you are not much of a gamer, only play irregularly, like detective games and need some light entertainment, ND is exactly the right choice,
Which isn't saying that these games are bad; as mentioned before, I really like them. But I know there are many people who will complain that the puzzles are too simple etc and yes, maybe they are, when you spend your days doing nothing else and know how such games (and puzzles) work. If not, go ahead and have fun sleuthing :)

This has been my favorite Nancy Drew game I have played thus far. I find the Nancy Drew games are huge hits or misses. I liked how creepy this was. There were a couple of jump scares that actually freaked me out more than I would like to admit. I thought the puzzles were challenging, yet doable. If you're looking at re-playing the Nancy Drew games, I would recommend this one.

This is not one of my personal favorites, but it is well done. For me, the newer games are more difficult in a way that is overly complicated, to the point that I have to use walkthroughs to get through the game at a reasonable speed. I'm also not a fan of the "scary" games as *spoiler (kind of?)* the ghosts are never real, and knowing that going in makes it a lot less scary. But, if you're into that, it might be worth spending $20 for a point and click :)

This story is a bit more mature, I enjoyed most of the puzzles and the characters all had depth. I also enjoyed the spooky parts. I found the end a bit confusing and a few things were left out but the player has a choice in their ending. I would forget where things were if I took a break from this and would've liked a book that had a map of the areas. Overall it was a good game and I recommend.

This game is fun, mysterious, and a little scary. It's also got some beautiful scenery and rich backstory. As with other Nancy Drew stories it is not open world and it is appropriate for any age, which may put off some more mature players, but I personally have enjoyed replaying the Nancy Drew games every few years well into adulthood for a little bit of challenge and fun. Moreover, like most other Nancy Drew games, there is educational content as well. It's not for everyone, but if you like point and click adventure, you will probably like this.

One of the best Nancy Drew games: interesting puzzles, challenging without feeling unfair, and very good at nudging you in the right direction but not holding your hand the whole way. The characters are interesting and well-written and the setting is delightfully creepy.

I have played many a Nancy Drew game, and this one is just barely at the top spot, a difficult choice to make since they are all so fun and good. Ghost of Thornton Hall is a spooky mystery adventure with interesting and deep characters, a dark plot with many creepy twists and turns, and a haunting ghost who has left a stain on the creepy Thornton Hall. There are many unique and clever puzzles to solve, and a few hidden objects to find. Keep your wits about you and don't forget your trusty notebook, and you'll have tons of fun. I can't tell anymore how many time's I've played this game, which is definitely a testament to what a masterpiece it is.

emirene

I really liked the game, but was disappointed that the creators went to such lengths to avoid talking about the issues at the core of the narrative: slavery, race, and class in the United States.

Thornton Hall is conveniently established in 1866, at the close of the Civil War. I wonder, where, in 1866, did the Thorntons get enough money to buy an island estate? Who built the estate? The cotton gin casually thrown into the Showroom hints that the family's wealth derived from participation in chattel slavery. So the game takes place on a presumable plantation and centers a slaveowning family, which is problematic as is, but also does no work to unpack white violence and the trauma that white people have caused and continue to cause.

The creators instead elected to tell the story through a white feminist lens. One item in the game lauds confederate spies for being women in a male-dominated field. It's giving "girlboss" - women using their oppressed status to deny their status as oppressors. Exploiting historically marginalized groups (in this case, enslaved African people), is never feminist.

Just recently played through this game again to complete its achievements. I grew up playing Nancy Drew games and personally this game I feel was a good continuation of the series when it came out. It was spooky and the story felt really interesting and unique. The puzzles were cool and for the most part obvious on how to complete them. And the visuals were pretty well done too. The dialogue was good too. For a detective-style game great experience!

QliphothicFear
QliphothicFear

It's a great game, but some of the clues are a bit out of order. Sometimes you can collect different pieces of the clue set\tools before it's time. If this happens, you'll have to work a bit longer to put things together.

One of my favorite Nancy Drew games. The spookiest among the games I played so far. The visuals are scary but beautiful at the same time. Loved the family secrets and drama revealed little by little. I enjoyed nice variety of different types of puzzles and cryptic messages, and there were a lot of puzzles, which is a big plus.

Raven House Mystery

Not one of the better games in the series. The creepy tone is undercut by layers and layers of puzzle solving that just slows the whole mystery down.

TheDeadliestSock

I played the games growing up and as a returning fan, I enjoyed this game. Some of the puzzles can be tricky, overthinking and making them more complicated than necessary doesn't help. I enjoyed Harper's voice acting. Why does Wade pronounce "adios" the way he does? That is the real mystery. XD

I've been on a Nancy Drew kick lately, and this one is my favorite so far. It's not the hardest one I've played in a good way. This one felt challenging but more doable, and it was just the right amount of spooky.

I like Nancy Drew (Thanks to my Wife), despite all the forced plot elements in most games. But I rarely would rate any game in the series above 7-7.5. This one is 10 out of 10.

Helen_NZ
Helen_NZ

I bought this mostly because of the positive reviews, and in hindsight I should have paid more attention to the fact that nearly everyone talked about how much they loved Nancy Drew games and this is the best one.

Maybe this is the best Nancy Drew game, idk. If your point of comparison is puzzle games like Myst, the Room, Obduction and so on, or detective games like the Painscreek Killings or Kathy Rain, you are going to be disappointed, and also fairly pissed off if you paid anything close to full price.

The good points were a genuinely creepy atmosphere, and the mechanic of being able to talk to people (in person and by phone) which shouldn't be a big deal, but which is weirdly rare in first person puzzle and detective games.

Bad points, which collectively made me give up on the game:
- everything happens at night, usually in a badly lit room, and there is no way to turn up the contrast in the game. So half the time I was just blindly mousing around waiting for my cursor to light up in the sea of black and dark brown.
- some of the puzzles aren't solvable until you've found the relevant clue. For example you can't interact with a particular machine in any way until you have been given a clue in anagram form and physically rearranged the letters on a written note. Because obviously magically moving written letters around is more intuitive than just solving an easy anagram in your head and going to the machine.
- dialogue is clunky and silly - there's no real dialogue tree so conversations happens in an order which makes no sense.
- you have to charge a phone through a puzzle which is simultaneously too easy (you literally get given instructions) and too difficult (one of the components is lost in the murk). Then the phone starts charging... and you have to wait for it to finish charging. I wandered around a bit, thinking that usability would be triggered by going away and coming back. I sat next to the computer playing on my actual phone for 10 minutes waiting for the in game phone to charge. And then I quit out of the game entirely and wrote this review.

This was a good game. I feel this was not as polished and well-rounded as some of the previous games, but it is a fun one. A great spooky one! This is also a very dark game, as in, there are dark colors, and I felt like I was constantly trying to turn up my screen's brightness. It is best played in a dark room for sure.

xingxing.2193
xingxing.2193

This game was not as good as I expected it to be. It's pretty short and the mystery is pretty intriguing but it doesn't really dig so deep? Or maybe because there's not much investigating, since someone drops hints for you to get the story going.

It's advertised and said to be scary but tbh it kinda fell short on the scary aspect. Sure there are a few slightly scary parts and some areas in the house are a little spooky but it's not exactly scary if you compare it with The Curse of Blackmoor Manor. I'm someone who gets spooked easily so this game honestly isn't that scary at all to me.

Puzzles-wise I think they're mediocre. I won't say I didn't completely enjoy them but overall not the best either. Not one of my favourites but not one of the worst either. I think it's still worth playing but it's not one of the top ones in my books.

If you love mysteries, occasional frights, solving a variety of multifaceted puzzles, and single player games....this game is totally for you! This is definitely a thought provoking game. I'm a note-taker and solve problems by working them out on paper. By the end of the game, I had 10 pages of story and puzzle notes! The ability to take in-game photos on Nancy's phone came in very handy and I highly encourage taking pictures of things you think might be important later in the story. I found that the in-game hints didn't help me much, because I had already figured those aspects of the puzzles out. However, it helped to step away and think about the puzzle from a different perspective or just coming back with a fresh brain and set of eyes. Stepping away was hard though because the story totally drew me in and made me want to binge the game. Money and time well spent!
