I do not recommend this game. It once was something great but now the devs don't care about their player base anymore adding unwanted patches removing complete sections of the game that players use to actually achieve something in game.

It's a great game, giving us a large Caribbean pirate world to explore, fight, and conquer. I love it, and I support these guys for making it even better, and maybe even expando to the whole world. 9/10

Very bad "game" ... The developer continues to modify the economy and other parameters of the game and is not at all attentive to the players.

I got this game a few years ago and I honestly got bored and didn't play much but recently thought why not and tbh it is really fun

Don't expect Pirates of the Carribean style combat. You will need a whole lot more than a single volley or broadside to beat even a much smaller ship into submission. This game is torture. This game does not pull punches. This game cheats. However: You cán win. Just be very observant, and plan ahead. Use the tools available to you, and conquer the West! Awesome ships,, friendly community, 8/10 would lose my fleet again

I would have really liked to recommend this game. The negatives have gotten increasingly worse and the positives are slowly bleeding away. Trading is messed up, port battles are messed up. The devs continue to alienate the player base with wild, illogical changes to gameplay.

I just can't anymore.....

The Devs are being really really stupid.
The should develop the War server into a globe map and offer a more player based trade system like EVE online and get rid of the stupid unrealistic wind puffs and Loki runes. Part of the game mystique WAS the fact that the far side of the map was a 5 hour sail away.

i Bought this game when it was in the development Phase and have most of the DLC's.
if i could i would ask for my money back because this is not the game i purchased all those years ago.
The Dev's have systematically ruined this game with bad patch after bad patch.

they don't listen to the player base at all, they are alienating the people that bought the game originally
and it looks like Micro transactions are the way this game is headed,

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME !!!!

it has become a S*&T show and its highly likely its going to get worse

i bought this game at the beginning of the year at that time i enjoyed this game very much so decided to buy all DLCs to support the game and its development only to have the dev team change the game so much it was unrecognisable and was different to what was being advertised i wouldn't want anyone else to waste there hard earned money as i did to this bunch of crooks who have no regard for the players that have paid for there lifestyles and careers for years even if you are a f2p player dont waste your money on a game that looks like its about to die.

f2p is just a final cash grab before the game closes for good all that's left to do is hope that a good company come along and buy this game and save it from the incompetent dev team

NivorbiaN

(thumb-up against shadow banning)

This game has a cluncky old-fashion engine and did not evolve over time.
The management team of this game is even worse.
They made a game with huge potential into a complete unrewarding time-sink
And don't play the F2P as your character will be wiped every 3 months and it will take a casual player a year at the minimum to build up a decent base to play on.

STAY AWAY!!!

Bull Halsey

Who wants to play a grind based game with over priced DLCs where ALL your progress is removed via wipe every three months? I've never seen the kind of wanton, reckless damage done to a game as has been here. They've taken a long successful working model, thrown it into a blender, strained out all the good bits and thrown them in the incinerator. Can I recommend this game? LOL.

The Devs have taken an excellent game and instituted changes which have completely ruined the battle, trading, and clan values of the game. The clans were a vital part of the game, educating the new player in a poorly documented game. While some clans abused their power, most clans served the vital function of player development, and port development. Most of my clanmates have already left the game. This last update and the devaluation of trading goods has made me seriously consider leaving the game.

Looking back last few months it's apparent that devs WANT to kill this game. Probably so that they can shoot down servers and they don't have to support it anymore. It's really sad, as this used to be really good game, and trully one of it's kind. Well now it is dead.

This game was published in 2019 BUT the devs totaly changed the gameplay and, right now this game worth nothing. This is a real scam considering the heavy changes in gameplay from what it was in 2019. Steam should not allow this kind of behaviour. I suggest you dont buy this.

howard.rorrer

I used to enjoy playing this game, but the developers basically have stated it is their game and they can change it anyway they want to. Some of the new changes have been good (friendly clan list doesn't dictate the quality of ships you can have, you don't have to own a port to be competitive), but a lot of the battle mechanics and economy mechanic changes just ruined the number of people that play. The only players you'll really see left in the game are those completely devoted to it. Otherwise this is a dying MMO.

I loved the game even if I didn't have thousands of hours. I've been following since it arrived on steam, and have planned on returning to it as soon as I was able. Well I finally had the chance, launched up, and....The changes to combat have killed my interest for now.

I don't expect, nor particularly want, maximum realism. But the current system, is just too bizarre and uninteresting to me. I can't see how it would appeal to casual players, it isn't appealing to hardcore players, and it doesn't appeal to those in the middle like me either. All it does is make the game...not fun.

I'm not saying this to be an asshole. I love the game. But the new changes around combat (I don't mind economic changes) just kill any reason for me to be interested in progression, and turn combat from something challenging that requires thinking, strategy, towards, well, I don't even know...Not fun.

I hope Dev takes the communities pleas into account & I hope this game thrives and want to see it do well. But I cannot recommend it right now as it is.

The game has changed and not for the better, playing this now due to the significant changes has made the game far less enjoyable. The Dev's have not listened to feedback by the majority of players and still press on with changes that continue to kill the game.

When I first started playing this game a thousand players online would be the lowest population, in recent days when I checked there were just above 150 players and this covers all nations making the game barren unless you prefer PVE.

In essence long time players have voted with their feet by walking out the door and not coming back. Sadly after many have supported this for years with significant DLC purchases.

A beautiful game visually but now devoid of much of the life it once had.

This makes me wonder if this was the Dev's intention to run the game down to a close...

Necro (JaeLotus)

Is the game at it's peak? No, absolutely not.

Is the game still enjoyable? Yes

Would I recommend people get this game? Yes.

The active online community are very open to noobs and are more than happy to help people learn the game. I did not play this game in it's prime but it's still a fun game.

First a caveat - I'm new to this game as of a couple weeks ago and i'm not familiar with the issues many of the veteran players speak of - I do not wish to seem dismissive or argumentative of their grievances as i respect the opinions and experiences others have had.

Overall the game is generous by offering a tutorial which after an exam promotes you and gives you access to a larger crew as well as a decent enough ship. After that however, there is no real guidance on what to do or what anything even is. The one positive that comes out of this however is the amazingly friendly player base - at least in the peace server where its strictly a PVE environment. Within only a couple days of playing a veteran player reached out to me (Shout-out to ZeketheGeek) and offered me several amazing ships and enough money to let me experiment with different equipment, tactics, and the ever intimidating (and annoying) boarding mechanics. I've made several new friends in the game and we enjoy just going out and getting into fights with NPC ships. IF you pick up this game, don't let the lack of direction intimidate you as there are plenty of player made resources all over the internet that are kept up to date as well as many good youtubers who cover the specifics of the game.

Graphically a very nice game and when you are at sea it looks great, the harbours mostly look ok, sometimes repetative but fine. The problem with this game is in the mechanics and game play, it just seems to be going backwards not forwards, we now seem to have lost trading as well.

I'm no expert at this game as i have not played it much despite having it for some time and there are many things to like in it and it could be so much better.

DLC is priced far to high, they are on a level with some DCS DLC, but with far less needed detail for a game like this. I got sick of seeing the same ships names over and over again, but if you want to change your ship name or colours that costs and frankly its not worth it.

I think more time is spent on DLC to the detriment of the core game which is never good. I have not brought any DLC at all as its not really worth it, if there is DLC that you can buy that you cannot get in game through crafting and grinding then that is always a bad sign.

I hope the next update will change things but then again i said the same before the last update, so i will not be shocked if its not.

I started playing this game just a little over a month ago. It was playable with your ability to trade between ports. Reminded me of old games like Uncharted Waters. This last patch removed that, so it's pushing you more into combat than anything else. Not a fan of this patch and would not recommend this game to anyone I know.

Developers are thieves who take away resources that you have gathered for months (when they change value of tradeing goods for several times . it lowers value of these important resorces for several times). Devs will not compensate their changes and so players leave this game because they dont trust to waste their time to this nonsenss where devs can change always everything. For example people can buy rare guns for several millions or waste hundreds of hours time to kill elite warships ...and other day devs put just the must cheapest 4 pd guns to rule whole game and after that rare guns are worth nothing. Players feel himself like prisoners in the hands of allmighty oppupants.

Game was fun and recommandable but from 13th September 2022 they brought a patch to the trading in the game which is half the game and destroyed it with it. Now only play this game if you only wish to be in naval combat the whole time, peaceful sailing and trading aint a valuable option anymore. This game maybe needs to change its name to Naval Warfare.

I've played the game on and off for a year. Somewhere there was an update to the game. When I signed back in all my buildings were gone. Now, I can't even log in. The devs really broke this game. Avoid it at all costs. Its not worth the frustration.

Started playing when it was quite new.. it was ok.. but.. a heaven for griefers and bad players. the PVP server was awash with people in massive ships and loads of huge guns just ganking you the moment you leave a safe port.. this tradition carried on making PVP almost impossible to get into with this game.. if you didnt start at the beggining you are basically screwed and someone elses enjoyment.. the pve server on the other hand.. much much more fun but its a dead server. no one really plays on there now i think due to the Devs breaking the game on purpose.. and the pvp side is also dead now. just the retard gankers remain.

This used to be a top tier 18th century historical naval battles game with realistic and detailed gameplay... up until the devs decided it was the case to devolve it into an arcade piece o' trash to cater to the nonexistent "broader audience". Game's pretty much dead and devs like these deserve to fail. I want the money I spent on the game it once was back.

It is a lot of fun once you learn the ships are not race cars and it takes time to build up the ports are very nice with a wide choice of cargo to buy and sell and you can build your settlements up as you go. The ships are extremely well done as is all the scenery. You can choose to fly the flag of which country you choose or be a pirate. how you gain your wealth is up to you. but, remember the world isn't a level battle ground sometimes the enemy is faster and stronger so think before battle!

Add more ships!! I think this game would be more fun if they would update and add more new ships to craft and go up against in PVE. The PVE is such as great idea, but they need to incorporate more unique ships. What's up with these small useless updates with Diana and St.Kitts?? Useless!!

after updates when they [devs] decided to remove reals from fights they destroyed trading between players. People are leaving game with every week so on, only new players are getting fun to the time. They are disapointed they the are not in top 10 online games and don`t want to keep up servers. They destroy every aspect of the game on purpouse. This is the biggest scam in online games what I see. Just don`t buy from this studio any games even if it's good looking.

The game used to be great and pretty enjoyable. But since about 3 months ago they pretty much started killing the game purposely. The devs don't really listen to anyone and give pretty much the opposite of what people want. It used to be fun where you could just peacefully sail and trade wherever you like, but over time they started ruining trading and now there is pretty much none of it, its just a shitty naval combat-only game pretty much. I played this game quite alot, hoping it gets better but it didn't. So overall I don't suggest buying it anymore, and if you already have and you are within your refund window, return it because its not worth buying anymore.

Very fun game, but the developers have no clue what they're doing. Great concept (For PvP server), great gameplay, but the in-game economy is in shambles, because the developers absolutely and brutally murdered it. If you really want ships, the developers do a great job of cornering you into buying DLC (not a good thing!).

But yeah, the game is awesome, the developers, not so much.

Was a great game until they recently dumbed it down. I was just getting used to the game until they changed it. It was a challenging game where the ship physics and the way weapons and ammunition worked was much closer to a simulation of real life navel combat. Not anymore, everything's been over simplified and it's not fun anymore so now I've lost interest. It really was the best sailing game I ever played. Such a shame. I guess they gave in to the players complaining it was too difficult.

Naval Action. Hardcore, REALISTIC, a detailed naval combat sandbox.

The biggest pile of fraudalent marketing I have ever experienced in my entire freaking life.
They market themselves as a "hardcore" (grinding worse than Diablo immortal to reach a cap much less of that which you can get in Diablo Immortal) naval game, it's just grind grind grind.

Realistic... This is the perfect game if you're suffering from head trauma and realism equates AI ships outsailing you:
-backwards
-sideways
-any direction, as the physics does not apply to them.

Who would have known that the most damage per minute comes from the smallest amount of calibre, no matter how thick your opponents ship is, you'll out damage him by equipping the lowest calibre you can find on the market.
Who would have known that the AI ships not only defy physics, their gunners are all on steroids too!
Imagine getting the best ship you can manage, now imagine putting the largest calibres on that ship, now imagine an AI ship reloading twice as fast as you, AND doing more damage per broadside.

The "head" developer shows signs of schizophrenia, his authoritarian, rude, selfish, arrogant rule on discord is outrageously funny, he's pushing for changes that will completely mess your entire progress up, he's making changes that'll make 2-5 surrounding, relating, mechanics completely obsolete. And when you confront him about it, he go full ape, "my gameplay you have to like." and bans you.

I recommend this game to anyone who wants to pay developers to insert a huge, schizophrenic, thing in their no-no hole.
For you sane people out there, this game is dying, the developers are arrogant, fraudalent, "artists" that'll bend you over the second they get the chance to.

NA_GA

The devs do not give a fuck about the community. They treat this game as if its in early access, changing mechanics as if its nothing; undoing months of grinding by players.

Do not buy!

This game was great in 2016. It's just been on a continuous, steady march downhill ever since. Aside from new ships being progressively added, the only good change that got made during its entire development was the replacement of the placeholder UI with the permanent one.

That's it. Literally every other change made to this game over the course of its life has sucked.

We had hints and foreshadowing of how bad this developer was going to turn out when they started selling DLCs before the game was even released. From unlocking basic features that should have been in the base game to pay-to-win ships that could be reclaimed at will for free out of the best and rarest materials with no requirement to possess those materials to begin with, they showed they had no idea what they were doing and not even enough judgement or common sense to recognize what is and isn't a terrible idea.

They regularly and routinely not only ignore, but actively disparage the community, and double down on bad gameplay decisions when the community tells them it's bad. A while back, they were trying to get rid of the PvE server entirely, and when the PvE segment of the playerbase rallied to its defense and showed that they were too big a segment of the playerbase to ignore, the devs threw their sucker in the dirt and cried and moaned about how PvE wasn't the intended nature of the game and how PvE players were ruining their vision and that the decision to remove it was only being delayed and it "will exist for at least 18-24 months after official release, and will revisit this promise then", not dropped entirely. Now, they've gone and ruined the game for everyone, not just PvE players.

They've evidently forgotten that businesses don't survive without their customers, and that alienating your playerbase kills your game and your company along with it.

This game is a sinking ship due to the developers' bad attitudes and terrible decisions. The absolute last thing you should do is step aboard - you should be watching it sink from a safe distance. If you do choose to buy it despite all the community warnings...don't be surprised when it sinks out from under you.

The game rules keep changing, patches keep getting released completely changing gameplay, the changes might not be bad but its just so many changes followed by more changes to 'balance' the previous changes, it really just needs consistency.

All these positive reviews are by a bunch of fake ass accounts the game says its a "hardcore, realistic sandbox" its beautiful but its not realistic not any more. not when you are in a First Rate (best ship class the game has 1-7) and a 3rd rate can kill you broadside to broadside before you had to use tactics and know how to sail with the wind now its who ever can fire faster

Okay, let me try and express my disgust as a new player. I know games like these take time to learn, it even says that it has a steep learning curve. Nothing new. However, the tutorial seems entirely unfit as a "tutorial", and more like it checks boxes that the game has a tutorial. I feel entirely unprepared for the exams that follow, especially DEMASTING. Oh hell do NOT get me started on the demasting exam. You're given limited explanation on how the aiming system works, a very limited amount of time and ammunition (chain shot is the only shot that can devastating as far as I can tell) and you're pitted against an enemy that is determined to refuse you every opportunity to demast. I've attempted this exam nine times. N I N E. T I M E S. Every SINGLE time I review the demasting "tutorial" to see what I missed, because it has to be MY error, right? I consider myself pretty keen at picking up what the tutorials put down, but this tutorial is, to be frank, useless. It is utterly useless. The exam is straight up impossible for a new player like me. I feel as if I'll have to attempt it a hundred times, just to get lucky ONCE. This train of thought review is one way of expressing my utter disappointment and anger at my impotence, and at how unbelievably unprepared I still feel to take on the exam. I'm off to try it again, who knows, maybe something will change. Don't buy this game in its current state, you will never make it past the tutorials.

Loved this game and had a blast playing with friends on the PVE server. But this last patch has completely ruined the experience. I went from hundreds of hours invested in being able to produce top tier ships. To being able to produce NOTHING in one patch.
Don't even get me started on the new sailing and combat mechanics. Combat went from rewarding, tactical game play, in which you could learn and progress through skill and experience to a basic DPS battle in which you can overwhelm a ship of the line with 6 pound cannons from any angle.
If I could refund I would. I've never seen such a self-destruction of a game by a developer in 30 plus years of gaming.

I am angry. This game was supposed to be what I was looking for for many years (a realistic age of sail MMO) but the devs have wasted the community's goodwill, resources and patience and, in the process, ruined the game.

Naval Action was sold as (and the current steam description still says it is) a "a hardcore, realistic, and beautifully detailed naval combat sandbox."

I've played about 300 hours and can say this is a lie and the devs at GameLabs have broken their promises to their paying customers multiple times over the past several years.

When confronted by the community about why they have abandoned realism the lead dev literally said: "This is my world and if you want to play in it you must abide by my conventions."

Over the last 5 years, instead of building a rich sandbox environment which they promised the devs at GameLabs have constantly changed core mechanics away from realism towards a purely arcade game style.
They have not added any actual content and, aside from a few trivial additions like wind buffs, the substance of the game remains almost exactly the same as it was in 2017 just with prettier UI. What they have repeatedly changed are the core mechanics, and these changes have been terrible. Away from realism and purely towards instant-action arcade mode.

These changes have devolved the game into an unrealistic arcade mess, absolutely NOT what most of us paid for.
A simple example is a 7th rate starter ship moving like a modern speed boat which can destroy a giant 1st rate ship of the line by stern camping it (this is the antithesis of realism)

In the most recent patch the devs once again adjust core mechanics regarding penetration and armor by making every cannon penetrate every type of armor at almost any range at most angles.
This means that all strategy, planning and tactics have gone out the window and most players just load the smallest (4lbs) guns on every ship because DPS is now king. No thinking, no planning, no strategy. Just go brrt and win.

The GameLabs devs recently stated that "gameplay is king" and that realism must take a backseat/is of secondary importance.
This is a thinly veiled and obvious attempt to cash in on their planned free to play servers coming soon.
They have made terrible changes to the game's core mechancis that have alientated their core players and target market (from a high of 1000+ players to the current sub-200 players, not counting alt accounts so it's probably less than 100 active players in reality)

So now, after having chased away those players who have supported them for years they are once again changing the game to appeal even more to instant-action arcade game lovers (who won't stay for very long and have far better options for arcade style arena game which deliver better instant action)

This game is NOT a sandbox and it being pushed further and further into being an arena shooter with arcade mechanics with each patch.

The devs have failed to add any new meaningful content in years (besides low hanging fruit of the "events" which they recycle every month)

-No improvement on AI logic (they just cheat and give them artificial extra damage buffs) The AI don't even attack players on the Open World map, they just sail around waiting to be picked off (even in PvP servers)

-No expanding on trade mechanics (there are only two types of ports, those selling goods A which must be sold at port B and those selling goods B which must be sold at port A, the port inventory is instanced to each player and refreshes once per 24 hours)

-Crafting has been dumbed down to such a simple level that is merely requires 4 easy-to-obtain resourcess and, in some cases, a RNG permit, to craft any ship (but you must grind like crazy to get the new navy medals to get the port bonuses to be competative in PvP)

-No logistics gameplay (all ships auto-healed back to 100% after every fight) All ammo is instantly replenished after each fight.
You can easily teleport across the map for a trivial fee of a few doubloons.

-No reason to use anything other than a 5th rate trinc/endy which is faster and better armed that every other 5th rate. They even removed varying sailing profiles which made some ships, like the pirate frigate, better in different wind situations (close haul against the wind sailing)

Their idea of "gameplay in king" is a farce. Whose gameplay? Definitely not those paying customers who bought this game on the basis of the devs promises and the damn steam description of realism.

This is an obvious sham to attempt to cash in on as many instant-action hungry arcade game lovers as possible because they've deviated from what this game was actually sold as and have aliented their core player base.
Now they're trying to find a new group to squeeze for DLC purchases.

If you like realism and want a rich experience the DO NOT buy this game.
If you like quick/instant-action arcade style gameplay which ignores realism then it will probably appeal to you.

Devs are not wanting this game to succeed. They are destroying a game that had some little issues but don't want to release any patch notes before the patch comes out to let the player base know about what's coming out. Then the Devs say,"Its my world. Live with it or find another world to live in." This is not the mindset of the Devs that I want to be apart of in a game that has a lot of potential to be a great game.

Trading and crafting isn't really my cup of tea but it's a lot of fun to sail around and hunt other people on the sea.
It looks good, performs well enough but lacks any kind of music so having Spotify/YT open with some shanties is a must lol

If you are new do the tutorial, you'll get a proper ship to do missions in and enough crew limit to use 5th rates which are just so much better than what you get by playing with the basic cutter. Also learn how to manually sail otherwise ships feel quite sluggish.

Greetings groovy user of the internet! I am not one who often leaves reviews, but I have come to uninstalling this game and decided to leave a review.

I brought this game after many hours of consideration when it was on offer, I installed excited to finally live out my dream of being Captain Jack Aubrey and eventually captaining the mighty Surprise. But I got hit by what felt like a pallet of bricks, an non-existing tutorial, uninformative missions, and a grind that makes War Thunder look like nothing. My dreams were shattered and after a few hours of sailing around I decided that I'll watch some guides and come back to it.

So I made my return 2 weeks later and decided to dedicate some of my life to it, grinding away, joining clans and making friends having a great time!.. So I lied.. I devoted more time than I should of to a game that was boring and downright ridiculous. I grinded for 30 hours and I saw no progression simply because I had no idea what I was doing even after watching guides I still felt uneducated.

I strongly recommend new players to really invest time into watching guides before buying this game, however with how toxic most of the community are and the stupid patches the developers drop I don't recommend spending your hard earned money on this game.

I hope everyone who reads this has a good day! :D

Up until the latest update, this game was a blast to play with Friends, sailing around like pirates. This last patch has completely ruined the experience. To go from being able to craft ships and gather your stored materials, to not being able to craft unless it's the bottom of the barrel ships is quite infuriating. The new ship crafting is locked behind service medal gains, which are dominated by a 10 man leader board system. Even the rank 10 spot only gets like 2 medals. After mathing things up, it would take half, to almost a whole year of grinding medals to get even remotely close to where you were before if you're just an average player and not an in game whale.
Combat went from decently paced and rewarding, tactical game play, that allowed you to learn, advance, and actually feel like you were making progression. They decided to double the reload times of cannons, yet made ships paper thin now. Clearly the Dev's don't have a clue about their player base, which is quite evident from their official discord as anyone who spoke up to voice concerns, were promptly told to shut the fuck up and that this was the Dev's game not theirs, and booted from the Discord.
I've never seen such self destructive behavior from a dev team before. Maybe it's got to do with them being bought out. Maybe they just don't give a crap anymore. They clearly don't give a crap about the players.
If steam would let us refund I would in heartbeat. This is not the same game anymore. If it was early access we can understand things changing, but to be years out of early access, the dev's are just giving us the middle finger at this point.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME, and definitely don't buy any DLC either, it's way overpriced and there's really no point to have those extra ships anymore.

I mean.. I enjoy the game, Alot. But i only have around 30 hrs and just paid for the 60 dollar HMS Victory ship cuz i cant get anywhere with a sloop of war. but after paying for the ship that was 60 dollars i cant even man it as i can only have 280 crew until I rank up, now it just sits at my docks as i cant use it ATM so im back here again to purchase maybe a 20 dollar ship to help rank me up so i can use this badass victory ship. Its whatever really, I honestly love this game. I just hope they dont change the game and remove my purchase and then im 60 bucks out. btw you can redeem your ships you buy every 24 hrs if they get destroyed. thats a relief.!

Restore the Raj

I was never a massively dedicated player but a causal player. I was able to sail first rates and enjoyed trying to make my fleet the 1830s style Royal Navy. Painting Victory white in an attempt to imitate HMS Caledonia as best I could and making a small fleet of 3 frigates and pretend to be the West Africa Squadron hunting down slavers on PVE. It was fun and the realism added to it.

The new update turned the game from a fairly realistic but not quite simulator level into an arcade nonsense fest akin to world of warships. While There is nothing wrong with an arcade level game such as world of warship which I play quite a bit. I was sold a realistic but accessible game. Others have gone into detail about the changes so I shall not bother.

The complete 180 the devs have taken is as far as I am concerned is nothing more then a betrayal of the playerbase and a scam.
Do not bother giving money to a game that the devs are willing to completely change the nature of the game to appeal to a nonexistent wider audience to make up numbers lost from their own prior mistakes.

If anyone from the West Indies Trading Company sees this is was an honour to play with you all and thanks for all the great hours you have given me.

I initially enjoyed this game a great deal when I started playing about a year ago. I left for a while then came back.

Now the game is completely different and while a number of reviewers are pointing out various serious problems, what got me is that round shot doesn't damage masts anymore.

How is that realistic? How does demasting work now that you can only damage masts with chain shot, which is limited? How are you supposed to capture ships (which have to be slowed down to board) without being able to demast them?

The whole thing is baffling to me.I'm not saying the old game was perfect, but these sweeping changes did not seem necessary and the developers have outright said they are moving away from realism. Because why would someone enjoy really learning the tactics and skills needed for 18th century naval warfare? Like people with an interest in the Age of Sail would play a realistic game, amirite?

I really think I'm done with this game, sad to say, unless there are some serious changes.

You don't fundamentally change the game post-release after players have purchased the game and DLCs. You especially don't make wholesale changes that no one wanted and no one asked for. The developers of this game seem to have contempt for their player base. They give the players what THEY think that they want and not what the players ask for. When the players complain they are either rebuked or ignored. Furthermore, the developers have no imagination in creating new content for the game. It is always the same old tired events that they run week after week and month after month. These guys seem to have forgotten that the idea behind a game is to entice people to play it not compel them to quit it. Dead game and don't expect anything different when free to play comes out.

Not many people playing much since the big patch. Things are a bit backwards... you do more damage if you put the smallest guns on your ships, even the first rates. The community liason for the game just shoots down comments about this stupidity by saying things like, "So sail smaller ships. This isn't a Dreadnought game." Yet they made and sell an expensive 50-60 dollar 1st rate Victory DLC... hmmmm....

'Naval Action is a hardcore, realistic, and beautifully detailed naval combat game immersing players into the experience of the most beautiful period of naval history'

This couldn't be further from the truth, the only realistic thing is the ship names. After recent update its turned alot more arcadey rather than relisitic.

Considering this is no longer a beta and then doing a massive turn to an arcade game shows how the developers listen to the community

Will try again and change review if issues are addressed, but I'd highly doubt dev's would listen

CowanSim

Ah this game.... What a state it is in, the devs are monopolising the DLC, They do not listen to the playerbase ( Which is under 700 peak these days) active about 250 max. Lets face it unless this game goes free to play and they go back on all the changes to the realistic gameplay then the game will die. As a Naval combat fan it hurts to see the amount of potential this game has being washed down the drain. From successful kickstarter to back stabbed player base

I would not play this game unless you get it free. I have seen a lot of fake reviews that really stick out like a sore thumb.

RIP Naval action

The general idea of this game is very good, the graphics are acceptable too but the devs 'emself make this game so bad its not fun to play...
Recent updates like the removal/discontinuation of the clan investments in ports are horrible and just kill the game.
I was lucky and bought it when it was in sale but on the current price its just not worth it.

I still hope that the devs turn this around and add some stuff, like new ships or new mechanics... but PLEASE dont make changes to the amor and pen of line ships like it recently happenend even though its more realistic.
To ensure that beginner dont get high br ganked every time and lose EVERYTHING a change in the br limit would be good or just that u dont loose everything....

For me the first 90h where very nice and i liked it, especially together with friends, but then the changes came and it got worse and it was only grinding just so you get ganked and you loose like 10 or more hours of grinding... VERY FRUSTRAITING

Jigsaw
Jigsaw

The story of a dying game in what was once filling a void in the MMO genre.

Drastic changes were made in an attempt to improve gameplay over realism. The changes just served no purpose other than to make life even more difficult for all but those that have time to dedicate 3-4 a day on a grind. Combat feels weird and upside down now. Smaller caliber guns do more damage than larger. Demasting with ball ammunition is no longer a thing. Chain shot to sails does little to bring speed down and grape shooting down over half a crew doesn't seem to really slow opponents down all that much anymore.

The devs appear to have taken on a my way or the highway attitude with players. Most long time players left almost forcing those of us that were going to give the new changes a fair shot to leave too. There's just no fun in playing when there are 90 people on in what used to easily draw 600-700 people on a good night.

As much as I'd like to see the developers make a course correction on this new way of doing things, it doesn't appear it's going to happen. Even compromise between the old way and new way seems out of the ballpark.

I can't in good faith recommend someone purchase this anymore as it will likely prove disappointing.

DO NOT...I SAY AGAIN...DO NOT BUY THIS GAME OR ITS' DLC

I have almost 1200 hrs spent in game. I've played on both the PvP and PvE servers. I've seen countless times where the developers just flat out tell you that they do not care about their player base. I had and made some good friends in this game and I wish I could leave a positive review...but it is not worthy of your time, consideration, or money. Kill this game by starving it of funding and attention. Show the devs that their careless actions and hatred for the community only hurts themselves in the long run.

I personally will be waiting, hoping that something better comes along to replace the love of the sea I knew that was once true Naval Action...

I have not really played this game for years now (since beta).
But it's quite crappy to see that the issues causing me to leave this game, still persists.
What it used to be was something fantastic, until the devs wrecked the game completely.
I spent close to 500h on this, and that's 500h of pure grind, just to lose everything by the next "genious idea" of the devs. We were promised time and time again, that this wipe will be the last, but looks like they're keeping it up :(

Lots and lots of sail time. Most dangerous areas in PVP server are near ports. Watch some youtube videos to help you play the game as there is a massive learning curve to the game. It is rewarding though, and making money is fairly easy once you learn how to trade between ports.

Ship battles are fun, but its much easier to fight PVP over NPC as NPCs can maneuver their ship in ways you cant and they ALWAYS hit with their cannons unless you are a far distance away.

Boarding battles are in a script like prompt and not a live battle. You just set your strategy every 15 seconds and wait. I wish you could see people board and sword fight, shoot muskets and pistols, and deck cannons at each other.

I wish you could see the ships before you buy them, its more of a menu and text. You can mouse over and see the stats but not the way a ship looks before you buy. Alot of my decision making on buying a ship is what it looks like, (obviously I buy better stats ships too) but I like to sail ships that look appeasing to me over how their stats are.

One bad this this game does is how sails and mast damage are handled. It takes a full 3-4 broadsides to even do 1% damage to enemy sails. Dont even get me started when it comes to the limited amount of chainshot youre given per battle too which also does almost no damage as well unless to shoot and hit masts going stern to bow or bow to stern. Even then its not much compared to what would happen in real life.

Sadly this game became garbage.
I started back in 2016 when a lot of mechanics worked differently. i came back this year to play it and at first i fell in love again, but after a short period of time i realized that the devs just dont care.

Gameplay:
back in the day, damage in battle was transffered into the open world where you had to repair manually. so just hopping out of a pvp and retag to your advantage was not possible and fleeing was actually skill, not calculative. i know it was kinda to hard so a nerf would have been ok. instead they removed it completly.
with the new wind modell they made AI tack through wind like a Red Bull F1 car is taking Pouhon in Spa. So trying to rear shot is waste of time. instead they want arcade sailing next to each other and repairing, where you need no skill or knowledge. AI advantage is stupid after the armour changes.

Ships and armorment
The nerf on thickness was quite hard, but not necessarily bad. they could adjust it a little so angling is a little more possible. but thats ok for me.
But the rework of the ships mean all 4th rate and lower ships are completly the same in stats. there are no individual ships anymore except the guns. so its only the woods which are changing things up.
the new leak system is nice.

Crafting
nice thought, bad execution. Naval medals are to hard to get. I work fulltime and sometimes even 48 hours in a row over night. i dont have the time to play constantly to get those. So building is a privilege now and not possible for everyone. and the more you upgrade with those you can farm them more easily and the others wont even be able to catch up.

conclusion:
They should convert some damage of battles into the open world so you have to plan your pvp again in advantage and not just engage where you want to. Change sailing back to realism instead of arcade. This game isnt World of warships. its charm is realsim and thats why people play it. Listen to the community!

The menu system in the market resets after each item you buy back to the start and you have to scroll again, such easy things could be fixed. but instead we have maintanence every day and nothing happens.
if the devs dont care, they should stop selling it

i do not recommend new people to buy it or any dlc unless stuff gets fixed.
there are no new events, always the same shit and there is no effort of the devs to change that

The graphics in this game are wonderful and the detail of ships and sounds amazing. It is almost worth buying just to observe. But you would be getting only a small fraction of the game you paid for.
The developers force you to become proficient in battle before you can play the game even if you want to choose the non combat trading aspect. To get beyond this initial battle can take many many hours. I haven't yet and I am an experienced sailor with a RYA yachtmaster cert. But this is sailing old square rigged ships which is more challenging. Even if you master this the complications of trading, buying, selling, the different currencies, crewing etc are so complex you would need to go on a week's full time course to learn it all. I would like to play casually, almost like a sailing simulator and visit harbours around the Caribbean but I am denied all of this unless I pass the battle test ! Most of the game I paid for is inaccessible because the developers will not let me bypass the initial battle.

Unless you have hundreds of hours to spare playing this game don't bother with this unless you just want to watch one battle over and over.

c3r3al
c3r3al

The developers have killed this game and they do not care.

With the latest patch they introduced individual investments for ports. This on its own is actually a good idea; however, the execution was atrocious. A new currency was created to facilitate these investments called Naval Service Medals. Getting this currency is extremely time consuming, something which the average casual player will never be able to make any realistic growth with.

On top of that, the developers have constantly neglected comments made by their community and have entirely stopped responding to questions posed to them on their Discord server. After this patch, a large portion of the playerbase has left, leaving a minimum of roughly 85 players at the lowest point during the day. The devs don't seem to care, and have even considered making this free to play.. completely ignoring their more veteran players in exchange for a hoped influx of new people to go and buy more DLC.

EradicNightmare

Captain Obvious

First and foremost, this is not a Sea of Thieves clone. This is more of a 'Escape from Tarkov' 18th century naval simulator. Any ships you have on the sea are liable to be attacked, stolen, and sunk.

The wind dictates your logistics, the factions are all against each other, and even people on your own faction can hinder you, so there is a learning curve higher than your average boat game.

Once you pass the learning curve, the Reals are there for the pickings. Main factions I recommend would be US, UK, Pirates, Spanish. Those are the most active and therefore the most receptive to questions and assistance.

Some DLC's are worth it, don't spend your money on ALL the ships. And only get DLC's when you're sure you're going to be using them.

Naval Action: a 2 out of 10. Was a great game at the start of it life and the only good Navy MMO but quickly went down hill over the year as the dev need to make money long term found it was easier to milk it player base for money then make the game better and get new players. Ship look great and core of the game is fun but hardcore. spend hours sail your ship to join up with the rest of your nation fleet to attack a harbour. Or sail a trade ship for hour to a town to sell your good at the best price they got you cover. So much so much potential wasted

I'll be honest, I like playing this game. Even in the current state. Its not for everyone and seasoned players will tell you that its gone downhill, which is true. But I haven't found a sailing game that I've been able to immerse in more than this one. I like AC4 sailing and gameplay but it wasn't realistic enough for what I was looking for. SOT is fun, but only if you have people to play with. Most other titles are either too cartoony or very outdated for the gameply I'm looking for. Do not buy this game. I have played for over 1200 hrs and it was fun and the game was great ,but the game was dying with daily numbers slowly dropping. Recently the developers have been doing "updates" and tweaks" as if the game was still in alpha and not a fully released game. JestersCap

Do not waste your time and money on this absolute disaster of a game.
1) There are no players. 80 to 200 players online on the PvP server depending on time of day. With many alt accounts online at the same time the game has probably less than 100 active players at the time of writing this review.
2) The devs broke the game completely. The updates basically made good and well equipped ships worthless. Everyone sails around in stock basic ships with the smallest canons available due to idiotic reload statistics of the canons. The canons mechanic is completely broken. You cannot level your ships against NPC ships of same tier because they are too strong. Gaining the necessary experience to level up and unlock all books for a ship almost impossible in a reasonable amount of time. This broken status has been going on for months now with no fix in sight.
3) Getting the necessary marks to build out your resources and shipyard is equally impossible. Especially hard pill for veteran players who earned and built out all their buildings by grinding money and doubloons just to lose all their built out shipyards and resources such as wood in the update.
Summary: Devs are completely incompetent and don't care. They broke the cannon and ship mechanic with their update. On top of that during the update the devs reset and took away all the built resources from experienced players who did the work by grinding for the money and doubloons. The new marks necessary to rebuild your resources and shipyards are almost impossible to obtain in a timely fashion. This resulted in an large exodus of players from the game. The game is dead. Move on to a different game. Don't waste your money and time. The devs don't know what they are doing at all.

Great game. Its a sailing simulator. Very high learning curve but nor only for sailing!
Just to learn to comfortly "play" with others in aspect of "battle instances" You need to:
1. To move/sail using the turn capabilities of masts, masts - forward, backwards, turning, pause in turnings and so on.
2. Firing from cannons and hit being stationary.
3. Combine the sailing and shooting from cannons.
4. "Discover" wind and understand the use of it.
4.1 Discover Perks and how they help.
5. First now, you can effectively kill NonPlayerCharachters(NPCs) without using repairs.
6. Start being able to see where to shoot to do more damage, predict movement of NPCs.
7. First now you can be somewhat usefull in battles with friends vs NPCs not being in the way of your friends,
not get stuck in the wind(in irons) and not get boarded by NPCs all the time.
7.1 Learn the sailing profiles of the specific ships.
7.2 Learn which are the most common ships used by players, how the sailing profiles ships work to be able to
evade/run inside the battle or to catch other ships inside battles.
7.3 Using unlocked slots on ships to put rights books on right ship to see how it helps your goals in battles.
8. See your "path" inside a battle and slowly start using the map in battle instances.
9. First now you can start learning to fight vs other players without being in the way of your mates and simply try to
stay alive thru the battles.
10. Make hits into other players and survive.
11. Hit players who should actually get hit (focus fire) in battles.
12. Share damage taken by your teammates with your ship too, not hiding far.
12.1 Meaning now you learned how to angle your ship in order to lower damage made to you.
13. Learn to hide your ships hull under the waterline, and use battle sails in Player versus Player(PvP) battles.
14. Again "Discover" the battlemap to see where is everyone and where are they heading and in what shape.
15. Learn to cover your inured teammates ships, finish-off heavy damaged enemys.
16. Glue your ship to enemyships and copymovements, steal wind with help of the windshadow model.
17. Evade dead spots in battleinstances in PvP battles and finally count as a viable teammate in PvP battles.

There is still a lot of other moments to learn.
In open world you have to learn where are the biggest game hubs. Where you can or can't sail at what time in what ships to be safe or to be able to run away. A lot of other stuff there too.
The best advise is to find and join a clan. Normal clan. Clan will give you ships for free and a lot of advise for gameplay in TeamSpeak or Discord, which will spare you a lot of hours. The more active you are the more the clan will give you!

I am new player and have nothing to do with veterans , but i cannot recommend this game , because in last patch they made all cannons same, no matter of the size. It's like you can snipe long distance with MP5 and have same result as with 50cal specialized sniper rifle.

That is ridiculous, sorry
