fun game to spend some time when you're bored. the spells are all fun and I can see it evolving amazingly well.
doesn't feel like it's in early access that much. very polished.

This one is really quite good already! Could use more content, but what's here is excellent and I'm excited to see how it grows!

Hi just Moth

Definitely a very fun arcadey style pick up and put down game. Has just enough mechanics in it to be intriguing to delve into without being utterly confusing.

The only thing that I hope will be addressed is just more stuff! More levels, more spells! This game is heading in a great direction, I just adore these short and sweet 'one more run' sorts of games.

Did'nt have big expectations for a $2-$3 game but have been playing it for 5 hours straight with out any loss of interest. The game is worth getting, and with it still in development i wait for more updates with baited breath. Good job Regal Pigeon!

I have played 12 hours straight now! I think I really like this game, progression feels good, combat is smooth! I am getting close to beating challenge mode 5. Can't wait for more content!

Didn't need to play for even half an hour to know. This is a masterpiece.
>Easy to understand
>Extremely satisfying animations and feedback
>Quick runs
>Many builds to try
Somehow it feels likeWizard of Legend but It looks like it could be much more fun by the time it gets out of early access.

Quick Description:
-Neophyte is the cool and new VS-Like in town. It mixes things up a bit, and feels more like a hack n slash than your typical auto-casting roguelight. It has a nice visual aesthetic, movement feels solid, combat has decent weight to it, and there is a good amount of variety in the upgrades leading towards some neat synergies. It could use some more content, but is a great addition to the genre.

Consensus:
-Solid Game (Tier 3 and makes up 35% of my reviews). I really enjoyed my time w/ Neophyte. It's pretty solid across the board, and one that I could see myself investing more time into. I think it makes just enough changes to stand out in this crowded market. If you are a fan of this very popular and growing genre, Neophyte is a steal at $3!

got some fun discovering the spells, graphics are pleasing, not too elaborated but at least they didn't go for atari era pixel art like too many indie games, a bit disappointed by the fact it's only 3 level deep, beat it on third try, may try some more to discover new spells but once i know it's only 3 level deep the incentive dissolved a bit...

its ok for the price. but it currently have to little weapons. no synergies.
the game is short you can complete it in like a hour. and there are like 12 different spells and weapons.

basically in the current form you get four fill in about 2 hours.

Excellent all around! Character movement is crisp, the spells all feel unique and powerful in the right situation. Ramping difficulty with added challenges is a good design choice. Can't wait to see what else will be added.

Very good action roguelike that actually puts you in control of the action.

This game gets all its bases right. The builds are extremely varied and do a great job of making you feel powerful, but there is great balance so runs never feel like a walk in the park. The main draw at this moment is definitely trying out new possible builds and exploring synergies between habilities and passives.

I would however love to see a more content added, as what is currently included can get repetitive. There are, as of the time of this review, just 3 stages that end with the same three bosses every time. They do a bit to add variety to the basic mobs in each ng+ (levels), but it would be nice to have at least 2 more stages, hopefully with consequential environmental elements like the poison in stage 2, perhaps make there be two possible bosses for each stage, definitely add a final boss that feels more epic, maybe a couple of random events or secrets and a bit of lore and world building wouldn't hurt either.

Those recommendations aside, the core of what they’ve crafted is already tons of fun and worth the price.

Another rogue-like game for an excellent price tag, it looks great and plays even better. However this isn't much content in game at this current time so a very skilled player can obtain almost everything in a couple hours. Yet it is in early access so there might be more content on the way. Worth every penny.

Adorable game. Loads of spell synergy. Decent difficulty progression.
Looking forward to seeing where the dev takes it. Recommend anyone give this a shot.

Envibel

A reverse bullet hell where the player actually controls things past selecting upgrades and walking around. Select the active spells you like and manually cast them while picking up upgrades along the way. What's not to like.

Chuk

This is a fun little arena rouge-like. You start with three options for a starter spell and there a good number of options for the later combinations. Winning a run still takes a bit of skill and these don't seem to be any super over powered builds yet. I think this is a pretty good balance, i'm only up to challenge mode 2 so far. I look forward to what the dev adds next while this is still in early access. Def worth the price tag

[BATT] Sreerambo
[BATT] Sreerambo

So much fun - very replayable as well. The game is simple on the surface but adds complexity via composing different power ups. There's a lot of variety that's added with the challenge levels that you get when you finish the game as well which keeps things interesting.

Kemo
Kemo

A decent arena roguelike that is in need of more content.

Another day another arena roguelike. These things have been a dime a dozen since the success of Vampire Survivors, but Neophyte actually tries to set itself apart rather than trying to ride on VS' coattails. You take a much more active role in Neophyte, moving around a small arena with four spells at your disposal.

The game is wave-based with each of three stages having unique enemies and a unique boss. Each time you complete a set of waves, you level up, allowing you to select emblems (power ups), stat boosts and switch out your equipped spells. I haven't counted, but I think it's the fifth set that has the boss fight and once you get through that you move up to the next stage. Beating the game will net you gems that unlock new emblems and spells for you to find in your runs.

Now for my actual opinion on the game. Initially I was impressed by the clean visuals, snappy animation and easy to pick up combat. The gameplay is definitely fun and trying out different combinations of spells and emblems is enjoyable. Unfortunately the game really falls down in the overall content department. Yes there are a decent number of spells, and lots of emblems, but the three stages are always the same. Same enemies, same bosses and same small arenas each time you play. It gets pretty dull and the challenge modifiers you unlock make the same content harder, rather than opening up new content. At the end of the day, it's a $3 game and the gameplay is fun so it's not the end of the world, but I would really like to see more content added (alternate stages would be particularly nice).

With all that said, if you're a fan of arena roguelikes a la Vampire Survivors, this is definitely one of the better ones and I'd recommend checking it out.

Loved it after just the first play through, more active than the usual horde survival games that have been inundating us lately and the abilities/passives appear to have some wild synergies if you play smart. Give it a try!

Osmium Night
Osmium Night

I'd say Neophyte is a little baby Wizard of Legend, but that's honestly selling it a bit short. Early Access explains the small size and the price is small to match, and there are actually a lot of gameplay differences once you get past the elemental wizard spells in a roguelike.
More important than what it's like is whether it's fun, which it totally is.

That said, the spell damage achievements aren't great - they're not too hard, but they pushed me to play the game in ways I didn't really find fun. I've done them all, and I'd be happy to not get any more.

I still have the old free Discord version...forgot about it for a year... Was looking for something else, found this again, played it to see what it was, and was oh yeah, this was cool...if it only had proper controller support so I dont have to mess with Key2Joy... Then I thought, now that I am on Steam, I should see if the game released yet and maybe its been updated...and ALAS!!! HERE IT IS!! Literally just released a little over a month ago! So excited....Then I played.... FACEPALM!!!!

CONS: Still no proper controller support....wtf....how hard is it? At least add a mouse sensitivity slider in the menu... PLEASE ADD PROPER CONTROLLER SUPPORT!!! I see how you designed it around mouse aiming, but just bite the bullet and either make it a twin stick game or ADD twin stick mode... Where your cursor stays in a tight circle around your character as you aim with the right stick, maybe clicking the stick can expand that circle but I hardly think it would be necessary since you really only need to aim at things in your immediate vicinity. Each round is quick and dirty, strategy like needing to aim over mobs in order to get ranged attackers in the back row, really never comes into play. Even though this is typically a major sticking point for me, since the game was only $3, I won't down vote it.

PROS: Kudos for adding mappable controls for keyboard at least. Lots of upgrades. Three types Ive seen. Spells: these are your attacks. Emblems: These give special effects and abilities. And Stat: These give generic stat upgrades, including criticals and cool downs and health or energy regens as well as attack and defense. Five slots for selectable spells as your attacks. Plus your dash move can be augmented to have effects. Its fun, has decent bones and was in the works well before the whole Roguelite Arena Hoard Survival (RAHS) genre exploded after the popularity of Vampire Survivors....which is a good game with all its variety, but this game HAS a DASH MOVE, so I can't down vote it.

Final word: NEEDS PROPER CONTROLLER SUPPORT!!! PLEASE!! For example, 20 Minutes Till Dawn did a very good job implementing proper controller support and no one complained about no longer being able to aim at things on the edge of the screen....albeit, a different less bullet hellish kind of game, but regardless. The mechanic for twin stick utility should have been considered in the development of this game at its foundation.

Who knew a game I never heard of until the other day would quickly become one of the most fun games I've played all year!

The combat is frantic and fun. The music absolutely slaps. The difficulty level is right where it needs to be.

I highly recommend this game at the $3 price tag. Just get it

Splankniktease

Overall this is a really fun game! I'm excited to see what the updates have in store for us. It's great that you can play this in 20-40min chunks, put it down, and come back when you're ready to be punished or ready to dish out some more punishment.

My only critiques for the game atm are that it could do with maybe more powerful passives and stat upgrades with each level completion. It feels that each incremental power increase feels insufficient especially as you increase the difficulty on subsequent runs.

Otherwise, great game at a great price with good replayability. Would definitely recommend it!

Ieuan
Ieuan

Good value for money. The game is fun, but could maybe stand to go for longer. The extra challenge levels are enjoyable, but the 'invasions' challenge would probably be better suited as your first unlock. Seems like a fitting reward for beating the game for the first time, but also it only really adds difficulty when it comes to fighting bosses. The potential builds are quite fun, but more control of what abilities you get upon clearing the final challenge level would improve replayability. That being said, the player may as well be given free choice of primary spell as you can just restart if you don't get the combination you wanted. Still, the game is worth supporting.

I love this game. I saw splattercat playing it months ago and bought it on itch.io right away.

I played it for hours.

I was sad it wasn't getting updates, but then I saw a Steam release was coming and I was so excited!!

I was happy to pay for the game again, it's well worth it.

There is lots of new stuff, and it sounds like more new cool stuff is coming.

Now, on to the details:

At first glance you might think this is just another survivor style game. Loads of enemies you have to kill, spells, updates, etc... but it's a quite different.

The game is a bit slower and more tactical. Casting spells either stops or severely slows you down, and you are going to be aiming everything and choosing when to cast it. The spells feel really unique (they aren't just fancy colored guns), and there are loads of fun different builds you can try.

My favorite part is the way the upgrades and spells interact with each other to incentivizes you to change the way you play. Rather than a twin-stick spam fest, it feels more like a ...MOBA?... where you develop a suite of spells to deal with all of the different dastardly enemies and challenges ahead.

I could go on and on, but just buy it and play it. Give it some time, it can feel a bit slow at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's a blast.

Perfect for a short or long gaming session. Even when you mastered everything, it's still fun to try out different spells or find broken builds.

Props to the dev, and release some cosmetic DLC or something. I'll buy it.

This is a fantastic Rougelite that you should not miss if you are a fan of the genre. Think SmashTV but with magic. Fully recommend this game. Just stop reading here and go spend the $3. Seriously.

If you still need convincing:
This may seem like "yet another Vampire Survivors clone" upon first glance, but this game is very different. The only similarities are really that you fight hordes of enemies, there is good pixel art, and the price tag. Otherwise, the game is structured very differently in how levels are handled, abilities are given, and it is more of a classic Rougelite.

For example, you actually have to cast all of your spells and abilities, most of which feel great to use. Each spell is unique in its ability, appearance, and play style. Spells can compliment each other and the stats you gain let you go on a bit of a power trip if luck is in your favor. You'll be blowing everyone up with fire, chaining lightning, and just good ol' punching things in no time. To me, this alone makes this game much better than VS could ever be.

Overall, this game is an 8/10 for me in its current state. It has just enough to keep me hooked, but definitely has more room to grow with what is here. The developer seems to be active in supporting this game, and I believe its only going to get better from here.

Also, did I mention its only $3? Just buy it.

For a very new game it is extremely polished. There is a lack of contents as it is still in early development, but what there is now is amazing. The rougelike elements help with replayabillity for now until more is added. I have not been this exited for a games development in a while.

I do like the game! Its fun, the price is fair - get it if you like games like these :-)

BUT why a negative review then?
To make aware of certain thing i feel like have to be the absolute minimum in 2022 - which are:
- Fps capped at 60 - (i want higher fps in those games for snappier controls)
- no options vor vsync - (can force it in drivers but has to be in a game, too)
- no partial controller-support - (at all!)
If those points get fixed i will change my review.

And the arguement "its only 2,99" does not count for me because other games for that pricetag can do it too!

For 3$ it's definitely worth it for at least a few hours.

The only thing I would love to see is controller support as I love playing these kinds of games with controller, other than that it's a fun little game for when you don't have a lot of time to play more time consuming games.

Note: Controller support isn't as easy as some would like to think. I'm a developer myself, not a game developer, but playing this game has made it clear to me that finding a good solution would be challenging, especially since it's only one person working on it.

BRILLIANT GAME FOR A BRILLIANT PRICE!

Neophyte has that perfect balance between little details and big obvious details that make me both enjoy the game as a simple minded bright color and noise enjoying cavebrain, but also enjoy the game as a sophisticated cheese eating wine drinking knobhead.

Instead of an arena battler where your skills auto fire, you are granted upgrades after each wave and spells after a few waves, which you can put into your spell book and constantly change around!! Start to see items that increase fire damage? Well equip the fire spells you gathered in the run! Or simply reroll the item ;p

The game is very fun, the dev is very invested and listens to his players feedback on new spell, and adding new characters, you get a a lot of bang for your buck with this!

A really promising arena fighter. After a couple of hours, I ulnocked almost every skill and passive. And started thinking is there any variety in the runs? Yep, it is really early in development, but what can it add more. And in my surprise, different builds, different passive and skill combs make a difference. I enjoyed every run since then, the choices you make in the drafts feel importand, and the fighting is engaging and satisfying. It takes some brainpower use in higher difficulties, but I like it this way. The enemies/bosses are interesting also, not just hp sacks of various sizes.

Generaly a really fun game in my opinion, with a huge pottential. I have high hopes for Neophyte :D

Currently, the game has three small battle rooms and about 2hr 30min of content(amount of time it takes to get all the unlocks)

I can't speak for what the game will be, only what it is at the moment of this review. It lacks synergies with the skills and is primarily % based on increases. This leads to largely uninteresting choices as you get new skills/power-ups. Its enemy variety is sparse, and the game mech you must deal with is on the simplistic side. Very little will change from run to run that will push you to change how you play.

I wouldn't say I am very good at these games, so I was surprised that I unlocked everything with only one death(that had more to do with a lack of attention due to boredom). Of the horde-style games that are coming out every other day, I would say this is probably one of the weaker ones. It's good if you want to complete the game casually, but it will not engage or challenge you after a few min of gameplay.

Ok, so.... I like this game, just a little tho, i mean, this isn't the type o game i would pour hours o my life to get all the achievements, or complete all the difficults, just a little fun, playing 30 minutes. Yeah... sorry for the sarcasm.
Being real now, i love this type o game, every run is different from the one before, even if the game doesn't have a lot o different spells for now it has a lot of combinations, the moment i noticed that i could have infinite attacks using revigorate, teleport, lava chakrams and the clock that you need to get to refresh your spells faster i was in awe and demolished everything in my path. beautiful game, fun, and very replayable.

Very good

A fun and pleasing game that can help pass the time.
I was looking for a fun rouguelite and I definitely struck home with this one. The graphics aren't too pixelated or minimal that it looks cheap or too ambitious that one could see how much time was spent overdoing each sprite. The scaling is really decent but I found that 3 stages is not quite enough to have a fun time. After defeating the final boss once, I was able to repeat the process easily using Lightening and Burst. I look forward to further development of the game and gladly give an 8/10 rating. (message to the dev: You can up the price to like $5*, its a pretty decent game...)

Aesir

Very fun game. Takes 30 minutes to beat and you get faster as you progress through the abilities. There are definitely broken combinations and they get more broken.

It's okay to lose as it spends the gems you've earned which unlock more abilities. The better abilities come as you play the game because after you beat the game it unlocks more difficult modes. In 1 sitting I ended up clearing 4 out of 5 challenge modes then I left to make dinner.

I'd recommend this game. For $3 you'll enjoy an evening/afternoon of fun. It's still in alpha so I assume there will be more levels, abilities, etc. So it's a nice purchase for the additional content I expect.

RectalLeadPoisoning
RectalLeadPoisoning

Fantastic little game and especially for the price. I think the developer could charge a couple more bucks and it would be justified.

As good as the game is I have some criticism, because I think it could be great. I'm very happy with the last couple hours but don't see myself returning to this game again as it has now become a little repetitive and mundane and I think it could be adjusted to allow for a TON of replay value.

Criticism:

The difficulty scaling is what kills this game from having any replayability. The last round where you beat the boss doesn't feel that much more difficult than the first round of the game.

Because the enemies are so easy, this would make any real advancement of the spells/skills overpowered. If the enemies are more difficult this will allow for the spell/ability/skill advancement that this game needs to feel fun, exciting, and have one round be completely different from the next.

Skill advancement in the game feels more like taking your daily vitamins than like picking up the chainsaw for the first time in DOOM. Yes, it is helpful, but not even really that necessary. The only skills you will ever need to improve through tomes is Life regen and Mana regen. 103% attack speed in round two is exactly the same as 100% attack speed in round one and feels pretty much the same as 150% attack speed in the final round of the game. (you would be LUCKY to get 150% attacks speed by then).

Imagine if you could get to 1000% increased attack speed, and imagine if the enemies were difficult that you NEEDED to be that strong?

If you look at a game like vampire survivor, when you start out in the game you are weak, puny, killing a single enemy is difficult. 10 minutes later you are like Gandalf with a shotgun, busting thousands of enemies up and so you really FEEL those changes.
From the first round to the last round I don't feel much change in this game. I just pick melee punches spell, fire chakra circles, hold down mouse one and two, and space bar dash around the board. This does not change in the last round vs the game boss, i'm still doing the same thing and the only difference is I can cast more fire chakras.

Another smaller issue: the pace of the game. I want faster, harder rounds. Mopping up some of these waves or even just the last few weakling baddies feels like a chore.

I respect that the developer thought of a lot of great ideas for emblems to do different strategies. There's all kinds of cool things you could try. Corner yourself, create an earth wall that blocks enemies and then shoot piercing spells through all the enemies, then teleport to another corner of the map and do it again. Hey, that's cool, but you will fail 10 times trying to make that work and you will win easily, every time with punches + fire circles that you can get right away every round.

Some of the spells require a lot of synergy to have a chance of being effective, but two of the most basic spells that are available right away work perfectly almost regardless of what you do the rest of the game.

Thanks to the developer for making a nice little game. I hope my review is helpful and I hope when it comes out of early access it's a big hit.

Absolute steal for the price.
Very polished, cool skills + great animations.
Interesting traits.
For a £2 early access, this game's a solid 10/10.

If this game had a few more bosses + more traits I wouldn't hesitate to spend 10x more on it.

You can be an electric melee wizard, so pretty good.

This is probably the most fun i have had in a long time, really good game. But this could be 1000x better if it gets more levels and more unlocks.

For a game where the runs usually only take around 30 minutes or less this is a pretty dang solid roguelite time-waster. The gameplay is challenging yet rewarding, the art style is unique and charming, and the music and sounds are pure retro goodness. My only real complaint is the lack of content the game has in it's current state. I imagine runs could get a little repetitive after a while, as all the game has in terms of gameplay variety are optional challenge modes. That being said it's always hard to judge a game by gameplay while it's still in early access, so I'll let it slide. I'll still recommend this game to anyone that is in need of a unique roguelite to get re-immersed in the genre. A+ debut, Regal Pigeon.

Really polished and satisfying. The visuals are good, the soundtrack is great, and the gameplay is tight/responsive. I don't know how fun it would be in the long run in its current state due to the lack of variety and linear progression, but at $3 I really cannot complain.

So first thing I want to say is the game is pretty amazing so far and I am looking forward to future updates. Art and music are great, difficulty felt easy at first but picked up nicely, the core game play loop is pretty addicting, and I did not run into any bugs at all. There are few things on my mind that I personally think would improve the game a bit if added. I think it has been said before but controller support would be very nice but is not a deal breaker if it isn't implemented. Also it seems like we have the fire, earth, electric, and arcane elements; it would be a nice addition to have a water or ice element as well. Also having elements synergize with others would be a nice touch as well. Maybe these suggestions are something you are aware of or are already planning to add later but I just wanted to get my first impressions out on the game. Overall a very easy recommendation.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this game.

This is NOT a vampire survivors copy. It is genuinely different and a great game. You go through waves of enemies that spawn while you're trapped in a room, slinging spells while desperately trying to not be trapped. There are unique bosses and many arenas. Give this a try

Great game with tight core loop and a really nicely designed reward phase.

The kicker about the rewards is the way they force you to scale numerically (by forcing you to choose two "tomes" each round) while also giving you neat new passive abilities. The abilities are almost always interesting, can be leveled up to gain power, and often prompt an entirely different playstyle. Of course, synergizing your spells, tomes and abilities is the heart of the fun.

Would love to see more content in a patch or DLC, but in the meantime this game is a good, cheap bet if you enjoyed Vampire Survivors, 20 Minutes Till Dawn, Just King, or (to a lesser extent) Isaac.

Good but there needs to be longer runs so that we have time to play with the build while still being challenged at the end. I am looking forward to seeing where this game goes

Very satisfying gameplay and progression ; good music and sound effects. Doesn't feel too easy nor impossible. Hope it gets more content because it's 100% my favorite survivor roguelike just from 71 mins of gameplay.

Edit: Unfortunately don't feel it has much replay value after you do all 5 challenge runs. Wish there were more rooms/enemies and spells (although there are a good number of good/cool spells.)
On that note some spells/emblems are just horrible. Storm Bow in particular has no upside , deals less damage, less dps and costs mana whereas you could play a primary skill and do more damage without wasting mana. Apparition seems op at first but when there are more enemies/they have more hp it's the second worst spell by far.

Anyways I genuinely recommend this game still but don't expect to play it for many more hours.

Somebody played PoE, took me 5 hours to beat all difficulties, some builds are heavily gated behind single perks that make them function. Pretty good bang for the buck.

Very enjoyable game so far, music is good, i like the animations and sound effects for spells, you can make some very interesting builds (And i haven't unlocked a lot of spell yet).

For the price it's hella worth imo.

Only downside for me atm which will probably change, runs are pretty short-ISH, i think an average run goes for like 20-25 minutes, and for most people this is fine, but i would love to have more time to develope and polish my build over the run a bit more.

Noy The Devil

Completed the game without dying once, wasn't too easy, but would like even more difficulties. Great game though, solid foundations.

qistickle

fun and satisfying roguelike. you go through each level and choose upgrades in between. you fight with spells, which you can assign to four slots for quick access.

it feels like the spell system was supposed to be something greater than what it is right now... but it's certainly good enough as it is. some spells are especially satisfying to pull off.

pixel art and animations are simplistic, but they are still charming and create a sense of clarity in terms of gameplay, which might seem slow at the beginning, but soon enough it gets pretty hectic.
