Had fun playing the game, although I still am trying to finish this game 100%. I recommend people to play the game for fun but completing the game is a whole new level. Good luck XD

A very heartwarming Ghibli video game that is predictable to a degree, but a masterpiece nonetheless. I see now that I had to play this game later to really appreciate the lesson in the story!

Gameplay is unique. Music is amazing. Story is well-paced and engaging!

I wish I could give neutral review, it's good JRPG with beautiful animation and pokemon-esque combat system. but there are some flaws that make playing this much less enjoyable. Though I could still finish the story and most of post game contents, I can't fully recommend this.

pros:
- beautiful graphic, great sound and music
- great PC port, no performance issue at all
- lots of poke... I mean familiar to tame, as a pokemon fans, I approve

neutral:
- story and scenes are too bland and family-friendly, it's nice but not memorable enough for me

cons:
- sloow, the protagonist is a kid who run with kiddy speed. We won't get any kind of dash ability at all, so prepare to "run" like a slowpoke inside town/dungeon for the entire game.
- Catching/taming a familiar has some annoying mechanic: the chance to catch is completely random and their level got reset to 1 everytime they evolve. There is a way to farm exp faster late game but it's still bad system imo.
- Combat AI is dumb, and any preset (to determine team behavior) that can use abilty would make AI spam skill like a dumbass, so our mana will be depleted in no time. Choosing "don't use abilities" and invoking skill manually would be the best option.

So it's pretty good JRPG for anyone who're patient enough and want a unique experience. It's like playing pokemon with Ghibli animation but with real time combat. Gotta tame em all.

Starts with 30 minutes of plodding exposition in cut scenes. Might be good if you want to watch an average movie, not so good if you want to play a game.

Lovely art style
Good voice acting (especially Drippy).

However...
Story is predictable
The whole game feels like a tutorial
Tutorials force feed you a lot in a go at times.
NPCs take you for a mentally challenged person (make things obvious but won't let you do it and then give you solutions while basically calling you dumb, over-explaining the obvious...)
The whole familiar system doesn't work well, just adding pointless grind...
When it comes to difficulty, the whole game feels dumbed down.

There's potential in this game but when we come to execution all you'll get is a padded game to ease young kids into JRPGs.

I would like to give it a positive grade but can't do that in good faith.
3.75/10

I heard that the second addressed the issues of this one so i'll give it a try with this in mind.
It won't be anytime soon though.

If you want a good one with this sunshine and rainbow feeling, i'd urge you to try Grandia. It's a bit old but far better in every aspects aside from graphics and sound (makes sense, it's 25 years old at this point).

Absolute tedium. Boring, thoughtless, throwaway side quests with bad unending dialog. 24 hours into the game I could give 2 yaks about the characters and just wanted it to end.

I actually love games with a bit of a grind but only when there is some meaning/enjoyment behind it. Seems like every second quest is go back to the place you just were, or once you get to fast travel do a circle of every village over an over to complete 15 of the same quests. Worn tired game with little care given to the player's engagement for the sole purpose of using that spell they gave you 3 hours ago once, or just making it longer. "It insists upon itself" -PG

So glad I played 2 before this (not the best rpg but infinitely better than this) as I would never have tried it if I played this first.

I would love to play this for more time but i can not get a controller to be recognized anymore. Ive un-installed the game, done the steam repair, bought a new controller, and absolutely nothing has worked, i am truly disappointed.

It feels like I've finally entered the world of Miyazaki. For real. The world that I love since my childhood. Brilliant work of each member of creation team (just thank you all). Just a childish delight, and low bow.

Honestly pretty upset about how this game turned out. This was my first dive into the Ni No Kuni world and I was honestly pretty shocked and happy with how the game initially introduced itself. It's kinda like Pokemon with the catching and raising little monsters mechanic but it also has a Final Fantasy 12 feel with the fighting mechanics. One of the big problems is this is not a very good remaster because it has really bad graphic compatibility issues. If you run at 4k with 60fps then the game will have a slight lag every 5 seconds or so. It was really annoying but honestly not unbearable and it didn't really ruin the experience. What did ruin the experience and is also the reason I sadly have to quit playing this game after putting 20 hours into it was the AI fighting mechanics. At first you're solo and that was pretty interesting and simple, but then down the road you get one teammate to help you out in battle and they aren't the best teammate but their help is definitely better than nothing. The part where it all goes wrong is when you end up getting your third teammate bc the monsters' power right after that scale pretty high and I love a challenge, but the AI are actually just idiots. The way the AI works is you have this "tactics" option that you can use to change how your teammates approach battle, which is a cool idea and works well for other games, but the tactics you have to choose from are very limited. You have like, 7 options or so and they all follow the lines of "do whatever you want" "go all out" "focus on healing" "do nothing" but the AI themselves aren't that smart so they sit there and spam switch between companions and end up getting killed bc they keep pulling out their one companion that is very weak against the current enemy but you have no control over exactly how they battle. A horrible example is your one teammate has the best healing companions in the game... but if you tell them to focus on healing they put their companion away and manually try to heal the team but they have little to no defense so they die quickly when they do this. I'm sure there is a way to weasel out some kind of strategy to squeeze through areas alive or just farm so much you don't have to worry about them dying, but I honestly just am not that big enough of a fan of this game to put so much effort into making the game playable. I even tried looking up guides on how to effectively use the tactics but all I saw were just so many pages of people basically saying "it sucks, I just let them do what they want and I tried to solo" or something along those lines. It's heart breaking this one mechanic ruins an otherwise really cool game

I played this on my DS years ago, there are some differences - mostly the names of some places and characters. I don't understand why they changed some names, they're not anything offensive. Unpopular opinion but I think this was better on DS with maybe the exception of the combat. Touchscreen made sense for drawing spells out, and some things like cleaning graffiti in the first town. Shizuku/Mr. Drippy felt more part of your group in the DS version than in this one where he's with you but doesn't do much.

Great RPG, can get a bit challenging though. I wish the ai-controlled teammate would heal me more. Enjoyed it nonetheless.

A late review, yes, I know lol. But that said, this game is absolutely oozing with Miyazaki charm, I feel this game to be vastly superior to the second one in the series, but that's just me.

I have always loved this game since I first played the original version on psnow and love the remastered version better. I would highly suggest this if you love jrpgs and studio ghibli films because they did the animation on it and had Joe Hisashi do the music.

I know what you're thinking: It sure looks beautiful and it's Studio Ghibli, how can it go wrong, right? Well, it turns out it takes more than that to make a good game.

The actual game mechanics are pretty dull and repetitive. Whenever you come across one of those unavoidable combats, you can safely close your eyes and just hit the confirm button repeatedly until you hear "neato". Yep, it's that simple.

After playing several hours while waiting for the game to pick up pace, I ended up just giving up. Maybe someday I'll give it another go?

I really love this game its beautiful and it's got a very strong nostalgia factor for me. The main game is great and I enjoyed it. I think the story is compelling and the side quests are largely fun (expect Derwin fuck derwin) and I'm a big fan of all the characters but the post game is incredibly boring to me. It's fun to redo all the bosses at first and then you realise you don't actually like it and it's just a task you're doing and your reward for doing every boss again? Another boss. The reward for defeating the boss of bosses is underwhelming. It's just an annoying post game I didn't even find very rewarding. The main game is still great and I love it but after defeating the white witch just close the game.

Gameplay - 6/10

Its just pokemon set in Ni No Kuni-verse. Grind your team to become over leveled and everything is easy. There's a bit of twist to the mechanics which makes things a tiny bit more interesting and no, you aren't really compelled to catch 'em all. In fact, I'm fairly sure you can complete the game without using familiars at all. There are lots of familiars you can use and metamorph(evolve) but none of it really matters unless you want it to matter. You can play with any team you want and just over level them.

Story - 8.5/10

Its a bit one-note at first but the last 2-3 Acts really get interesting which is typical for JRPG stories. Its a bit slow at first and you spend nearly 60% of the game going from lone character to full roster but as things start to unravel after the 60% mark you realize that the slowness of it all has gotten you invested in the characters you're travelling with and their history and side stories and before you know it, you're invested enough to take an interest in the rest of the Ni No Kuni lore. There's comic relief and some of them are a bit mature but not so blatantly stated. If you know, you know kind of jokes. Themes are pretty serious and mature as is the signature theme of Studio Ghibli. I watched the movie before I played the game and it helped me relate to the world more and keep me engaged. If you've watched any of the Studio Ghibli movies, this game feels like watching 3-4 seasons of Ni No Kuni

Content - 8/10

There's plenty of content, plenty of things to collect, plenty of things to do, plenty of achievements to pursue, plenty of team builds to explore(but honestly none of the builds matter), the story quests are long, the side quests are short and interesting but if that isn't enough to make you do them, you are rewarded well (with items and upgrades) for doing them. I actually enjoyed doing side quests here unlike with other games where the side quests are a bit boring, too long to be worth doing, too hard to be worth doing. Side quests here are short enough and easy enough that you might as well do them while you're at it and is well worth your time regardless of what you value in them.

Overall Post-Game Satisfaction: 8/10

The Ghibliesque world is *wonderful*. The dungeons and combat are not. Think caves in Pokémon but with the enemy encounters doubled and no repels. No challenge, just non. Stop. Meaningless. Combat.

Every square inch you traverse in every dungeon and the overworld will be spent desperately hoping for as few encounters as possible and wincing whenever you inevitably run into one. Then another. Then another. Then another. Then another.

I cannot say enough good things about Ni No Kuni.

It is a truly stunning game visually and the music is stunning too. I've had pictures of various locations from the game, such as the Deep Dark Wood, as my desktop background and I've found the soundtrack perfect for all sorts of situations, such as working on a piece of writing or travelling on the train to make my journey feel way more epic.

The world - or worlds, more accurately - are utterly charming and characterful. I want to live in Ding Dong Dell and attend the tug-o'-tail tourney, and I want to visit Yule and befriend all the Tomte!

Although the feeling diminishes as you progress through the game, initially there is a real sense that you're traversing a huge and beautiful world filled with wonders and dangers. This feeling is particularly strong the first time you journey between two of the major kingdoms.

In terms of story, everything that forms part of the Dark Djinn storyline is compelling and cleverly tied together. I absolutely love it. I was less keen on the White Witch plot. In my opinion, it really shows that the Witch White additions were inserted into an existing and much more coherent story.

Equally, the original characters are awesome. Mr Drippy is obviously the best character in the game. Whereas the characters added for the White Witch get on my nerves.

I found the combat fun and had no trouble keeping up with the game's expectation for how much the player should level up the party between segments of the main story. If anything, I would have liked a harder difficulty setting so that I didn't need to worry about overlevelling.

I could get into the fury certain aspects of the gameplay can induce, but they relate to a completionist playthrough rather than posing an obstacle to playing the main game, so I'll leave that alone.

What I'd really love is a PC version of Ni No Kuni: Dominion Of The Dark Djinn. Still, that story is contained within this one and I was seriously overjoyed when Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch came to Steam

this is a hard game to recommend, for one side the story is good, and the graphics are top notch even for a game that has already some years, even with the remaster... I enjoyed it, but with a lot of issues
but the game system, mechanics and combat are on this side, also, even the story is engaging, it has a lot of grinding to be completed, a lot of backtracking and the endgame is really long, and not very rewarding to achieve the secret final boss (i have even to take a long pause since finishing the story and then completing what I considered enough for of the endgame).
like i said, a good game if you can endure it, but not very good on the mechanics and combat area.

Pros:
-Animation. I wish so much that there was more of this. I loved the few ones that we were able to see. The cheese feeding one for example.
-Art.
-Story. I though that this would only appeal to teens, but that doesn't appear to be the case. It has more depth in it than the art style lets on.
-Unique

Cons
-Grinding is quite hard.
-The character moves way to slow. I hated it. Especially since the world is so vast. And you need to backtrack in this game, especially for sub quests and if you're trying to achieve perfection.
-There should me more warp points.
-It's hard to get certain creatures for that researcher? guy since the taming chance is based on luck and luck alone I believe. Which is why I stopped trying to complete the sub quests. I really wanted to but, tis life.

Comments:
-You may need a guide on hand sometimes since there are sub quest areas which are hidden, and the speed where your character moves is painfully slow. You'd rather just be done and over it. Especially the medicine quest in Hamelin. I still can't find the forest entrance on the west side,

It's definitely not as good as I remembered it. Purely playing for the childhood nostalgia, there are lovely animated sections by Studio Ghibli but those are few and far between, most of it is scrolling through pages of text and spending forever grinding for money to either get the overly expensive coffees for your MP you desperately need or buying the armour/weapons for you and your familiars, then it's back to the same boring grind to get the next slightly better set of items or to level up yourself just enough so the damn annoying monsters stop chasing you every 30 seconds and for the first 20 hours or so, slowly walk to point A to B until you have faster transportation later into the game.

The graphical style of this game is stunningly beautiful.
Which makes it feel more like a movie than a game as it falsely says that the game has dynamic combat with an exciting battle system. Which is something developers say when they don't actually play games or know themselves what makes a game exciting and fun to play.

The game play in this game is rather meh, combat isn't exciting and rather limited and not fun.

In combat you have to flip left or right through a menu to select attack or defend and
the controls can make combat more difficult than necessary especially on boss battles as it is time sensitive when they are about to do a devastating attack you have to be able to quickly select defend so you don't lose a massive chunk of health and I find myself often fumbling with the controls to flick to defend at the exact right time if you mess up you can easily be defeated.

It's not at all like the classic turn based JRPG games which you have a whole party take turns with seperate HP and MP. This game doesn't have much in the way of team work as you can only control 1 human character or 1 familiar on screen at a time to fight which share each others HP and MP and feels very limiting.

The graphics are really good, but game play is severely lacking and I rate this as a game and how the gameplay is which is very mediocre, borderline bad.

Also a lot of the dialogue seems rather theatrical and exaggerated with terrible puns, kind of like the way a child's story is written which I do not like. So I think this game is targeted more at children than adults. The story is simplistic and linear you're just following along and doing whatever you are told, no choices or anything else or input in what the character can say or do, it feels mindless.
Overall I find the game rather meh and boring so can't recommend.
So I'd rate it 5/10.

this game is amazing although it has some things that hold it back like the combat. the combat is pretty boring and lacks diversity such as the basic attack being on a timer and I mainly just spammed like 2 spells throughout my gameplay. Other than that I think this is a must play especially if you like Studio Ghibli since they worked on the game too. Overall I would give this game a 8.5/10

Have you ever wondered what a game would be like if the devs decided to go with all the bad ideas, then this is the game for you. Every aspect of this game, from the story and game play to the visual and audio, and lets not forget the controls and combat are all terrible. I really like Level 5 games, but this is just utterly awful. I read several reviews downplaying the sequel and cannot understand what they are talking about when it was referred that this was a superior game. I will say this is a game, but only in checklist form. Not fun or worth anyones time even on a discount. Start with the second title and play that one thinking its the first game in the series.

I played Level-5's classic game on PS2 back in the day called Dark Cloud or Dark Chronicle, so I thought I'd give Ni No Kuni a try, since it's created by the same developer. Gonna have to say though, Dark Cloud was better. They should've come out with a sequel for that game...

This game is good too though just not as good as Dark Cloud 2, but the devs screwed up one important part of it, and that's Mana/MP conservation. you run out of MP fast in this game and to restore it (in dungeons) is not hard, but time consuming. Have to grind and stock up on coffees. iced coffee costs 200 G and restores only 10 MP ! while strong coffee costs 800 G and restores only 30 MP. time wasting and booooring. also, if you don't have the provisions (Coffees), all you're left with is going in battle and running around waiting for Drippy to drop those blue mana orbs. Well I guess I could run back to the waystones to restore HP/MP and save my game, but then the enemies will respawn too on my way back and forth. I think what they should have done was made it so the Mana/MP doesn't deplete so fast or just put another waystone midway through, or just made it so the enemies don't respawn in dungeons.

Absolutely overrated, brand name nonsense much in the same way as Kingdom Hearts. If Level-5 wasn't involved it would've been totally throwaway. The game felt pointless, beyond in having this childish Ghibli story to it. The combat felt redundant and the familiars were largely forgettable, although a real time action RPG Pokemon could in theory be interesting otherwise. I ended up skipping various dialogue, even though the English humor ala Dragon Quest was at least somewhat entertaining. I can see why so many people don't have the patience to finish this game. Takes up 40 gigs of space, and they want $50 not on sale?!?!

Perhaps the worst RPG to be released on PS3. 74/100

Huangdi

Much as I am a fan of Miyazaki and studio Ghibli I feel like involving them in designing the characters and 15-20 minutes or so of animation was just a bait and switch for what is otherwise a very mediocre and unnecessarily grindy pokemon clone with absolutely god awful storyline pacing.

As you can see I've played a few hundred hours of this game and at this point I barely have 15 familiars maxed out in their grind to the third form and/or max level. Which is idiotically long considering. Because in their infinite wisdom the creators decided to make familiars' levels reset to 1 from their evolution level.

So what's the outcome here? Your top familiars both attackers and defenders get neutered and then you need to invest hours upon hours of time to bring them back up to par with the difficulty of the enemies in various dungeons. Not to mention bosses.

Which as a function of seamless storytelling breaks things up. I'd be damned if I care about any of the characters anymore SIMPLY because of the grind, and the poor mechanics in fights. Such as animated abilities of some familiars interrupting/preventing actions from being taken.

And that's before I even get into the really clunky AI in this game. As a whole I would ONLY recommend this to the most hardcore Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki fans. And even then ONLY when it's on sale. Think of this game as watching "My Neighbor Totoro" except that you're forced to go outside and work in a warehouse for an hour after every 10 minutes of the film.

Stinker. At this point I'm only finishing it because might as well see how this plays out.

Right up until the end it's good, albiet middling. The very end is a waste of time.
3 boss rush battle. First two are easy, but the last one is such a ramp indifficulty that you don't get a sense of whether you need to go grind more.

Made it to the end, died to the very last phase after 30 minutes of the other two phases being average in difficulty. Waste of time.

I know I spent over 100 hours playing the game, but I don't really think I'd personally recommend the game to other people.

Pros:
- The animated cutscenes were obviously amazing.
- The music is amazing.
- The artwork and character designs were nice.
- There's a side-story I liked involving a frog prince. (Too bad he wasn't a playable character.)

Cons:
- The gameplay is super grindy and the main reason I spent this long playing the game.
- The familiar/monster summons are incredibly imbalanced. It makes you feel like there's no point in collecting the creatures of the world. There's a select few that are good, and the rest are pretty bad.
- The story was praised for being amazing, but it's actually pretty one note. It was very straightforward and lacked any depth.
- Characters were pretty boring aside from Swain. Everyone aside from Swain seemed to lack personality and much of the cross character banter was very bland as a result.

Ni no Kuni, Wrath of the White Witch is a pretty enjoyable RPG, with a distinctive and pretty art style made by Studio Ghibli. Overall, it's a great jRPG if you can get it on sale, which it goes on deep discount often. The downside is that it is tutorial overload, even things you've done dozens of times before, the game will interrupt you and try to teach you what to do. It's even worse when you're in combat and Drippy "helpfully" interrupts you for something, cancelling whatever action you're doing. Any cancelled action will be lost and the resources (mp, gold glim ultimate spell power, item use) will still be consumed for no effect.

The art style and graphics are great, with a nice variety of environments. Character art and animation are also well done. The art style is consistent and looks pretty timeless. It's one of the main draws to the game. The characterization is also decent, I quite like the main cast except for Drippy. Even though I'm not fond of Drippy, he still has his place in the story and is important for the narrative. The story does get dark at times, so while it appears to be a children's game (and the tutorial overload also implies that), storywise it's definitely not for younger kids who aren't able to understand the themes death of a parent, Shadar's mind control and terrifying abilities, and a scene that really seems like a violent abusive parent.

Exploration is OK, especially later when you have access to easy mobility. You get a number of utility spells that aid in traversal through the world and through the dungeons, and these are used throughout the game. You can unlock a jump, which the game itself says is useless but fun. It's actually quite useful because when you're using a slow familiar or in certain areas, you move faster when jumping.

Combat is an unusual mixture of turn based combat and real time. You issue a command, like fight or block, and your familiar or player will execute that action for a time until the action finishes (which can be 1 to 4 attacks usually), or you cancel out of it to select another command. It's important to interrupt the actions as you will need to block special attacks quite often. Your companions will be AI controlled, and the AI does not do a good job at using correct skills or blocking at appropriate times. You will eventually get special commands to force your companions to block or to go all out, however these commands are not available until far too late (and after two of the most difficult fights). Combat controls feel a bit awkward to use at times. You'll also need pretty fast reactions and controller inputs for some bosses, since you have very little time to cancel out of your fight action, switch over to defend, hit all defend, and get it done before the bosses attack goes off. While on normal it wasn't deadly, it did cost valuable resources if I wasn't fast enough.

One of the main mechanics is a Pokemon type of creature collection system. Each character in your party can have up to three familiars in their loadout, Familiars are obtained by fighting until they're defeated, and then it may pop a heart over its head, one of your allies can tame it if you switch to her and use the appropriate skill in time, without an AoE attack or targetted attack killing the enemy in the process. Recruitment rates can be extremely low, leading to a real frustrating experience if you do decide to go for them all. I'm not too fond of Pokemon style games, and didn't desire to do any more recruitment than necessary for sidequests and what recruits popped up for me; but if you like these types of games there's a lot to it.

Overall, I tried to put a strong melee familiar, some sort of caster sort with healing spells, and a familiar with utility skills on each character and I rarely had to switch out. Make sure to keep your character and familiar gear up to date.

There is also a crafting system, but I found it frustrating and not fun to do. While you can make some interesting things, discovering things you don't have a recipe for will require lots of retries or save scumming . Ingredients for higher end gear or healing items can be super scarce or difficult to get as well.

Game balance is not the best, there are times when you will run into extremely difficult bosses. Even with doing sidequests and keeping up with gear, you may need to grind in order to reasonably beat it without consuming a lot of resources.

That said, resources can be scarce, money is in short supply most of the game and it's hard to keep up with healing items if you don't get ahead of the EXP curve. Another issue is that the AI does not manage your allies MP well. Even if you set Esther for instance to concentrate on healing, she'll still waste MP on low value buffs. The only option is to turn them off completely, but then you have to micromanage all their skills and combat can get hectic. The rapid draining of MP your allies do certainly doesn't help with the resource scarcity.

Finally, the game doesn't explain it very well, but there is a trick to get the glims (little healing and mp restoration balls that pop out of the enemy). They spawn from countering a bosses attacks, whether or not you get hit. Hit with a fast melee attack just after a bosses attack goes off and you'll spawn the orbs. This can greatly help with resource management in harder fights.

If you love Studio Ghibli than this game is a MUST!!! It's a pretty nice RPG and I love the combat style. I played the original game on the PS3 and enjoyed it as well as playing the remastered version on PC. It has gorgeous graphics and scenery. The story line is just beyond amazing! Oliver and Drippy are adorable characters, all the characters in this game are fantastic, it won't get you bored. The animated cutscenes were obviously outstanding and also the music was unbelievably amazing as well. The familiar/monster summons are very good, they put a lot of work into this game you can tell obviously. You won't get bored by playing this amazing game!

its like Studio Ghibli meets pokemon and the story is very good.

Beautifully made, charming and often fun, but to get the most out of this game you need to look past some fairly significant gameplay flaws and haphazard storytelling.

I'd recommend this game just in certain cases.
It really depends what you are really looking for.

Pros:
*Graphics still look good (Cell shaded)
*Art Style (Studio Ghibli)
*Story (depends, could be a negative for you. It's more like a long fairy tale with that feel all over.
It doesn't tackle deep issues or new themes so pretty standrad but it fits the artstyle and combat.

Con:
*Combat (The combat isnt bad per se but it isnt deep enough.
You have your monsters you can collect and level and equip them with items and skills.
But it isnt complex and doesnt go further than just blindly leveling them.
I stuck with the monster i got in the beginning and even though elemental affinities are a thing enver bothered even for boss fights.
The combat imo is all in all better than the one in Ni No Kuni 2 but still not good enough.
*Ending was kind of underwhelming.

All in all i would recommend it if you already played all major jrpgs you really wanted to play and want to try something different style/story wise.

Diamond Arcana
Diamond Arcana

A storybook in concept, a marathon in execution.

Ni No Kuni has a fair few flaws, but its strengths ultimately shine through enough for me to make a tacit recommendation of it to any JRPG fan. The initial premise and Ghibli wonder wear off before long, as the emotional hook of the story is submerged by far, far too much filler, but it still resolves in a satisfactory enough conclusion to make the journey worth seeing through to its end.

I used to play this game for hours and hours at a time back as a kid on the PS3, finished the game on switch, and I'm extremely excited to continue playing on PC! The story is rich and I have strong attachment with all of the characters, and I recommend getting the game if you haven't already.

Loved the game, did the story + sidequest in 56 hours or so. So its possible to say that the game have a good length.

But even after finishing the game I felt the need to keep playing, there are some really good sidequests in the endgame that contains more information about the worlds. The lore is nice and really emotive, the characters give moral lessons that we take for granted, the story itself is light, there is no dark themes like in persona's saga for example.
Another thing to talk about is the art of the game and the soundtrack, both are amazing.

This is a must play for JRPG fans

The games story is pretty simple and wholesome, but the game play is miserable. Too grindy. Some of the bosses in the are too fucking hard unless you grind levels and I even looked up an efficient way to farm xp and you cant even do it optimally till about half way through the game. And the ai is pretty bad and the tactics are pretty lame and they wont defend or evade ever which kills them and leaves me all by myself. so that is why i rate this a 3/10

Dbentzjr

You get to play a Studio Ghibli movie, literally. It is grindy but I can appreciate this, although the grinding is probably not for everyone. The artwork, the animation, the voice acting, the music, all absolutely fantastic quality. This is going to be an amazing adventure.

Curious

Having basically 100%d the game I can forgive most of its flaws except one. The combat system is fundamentally broken, and its down to the behaviour of interrupts which are either bugged or very badly designed. Every big attack from enemies interrupts both casting and channelling of spells, casting refunds your resources and just wastes your time, but getting interrupted channelling generally deletes the effect of your spell while consuming MP/items and putting abilities on cooldown. You can cancel casts to avoid getting interrupted but you cannot stop channelling (your cast has completed but you are waiting some additional time for an effect). To make matters 10x worse your own teams attacks, buffs and heals can also interrupt your casts (not always it depends on whether the ability has an interrupt).

I could recommend this game despite its flaws if they took the time to patch interrupts, your own team should not be interrupting you, and imo enemy attacks should not be able to break channelling and remove your resources and the effect. This one bug causes the majority of negative play experiences in the game and I don't think the developers have played their own game enough to notice.

Controller support is so bad it ruins the initial play experience. The game fails to detect controllers connected after the game has launched, requiring a relaunch. Once launched it ignores all controller input if you leave inputs idle for a few minutes, controllers have to be unplugged and reconnected to regain input. This is basic quality assurance and controller support that hasn't been done and is not especially difficult or time consuming to achieve, all developers have to poll new devices in DirectInput and the documentation includes examples.

The game is tolerable on mouse and keyboard with just one bad keybind for cancelling out of attacks. It hinders switching to defence to block some attacks but the flaws in the combat system are more of an issue. The gameplay is close to a good experience but lacks polish, poor AI behaviour, bad timing windows, wild difficulty swings into boss fights, and a general awkwardness in the realtime implementation of a turn based system just hold it back.

The story swings wildly between the excellently written and directed Studio Ghibli sequences and absolute garbage filler created by Level 5 to pad out mid-sections of the game. Its unsurprising Ghibli lost interest in working on the sequel when their story was butchered by what is probably programmer written sections with Level 5 thinking they don't need to pay a writer. Its unfortunate because from what I've heard of the sequel Level 5 may have learnt from their mistakes with this game.

TL;DR
Great game overall with a great story, great combat system, awesome art (especially if you're a ghibli fan), and nice music.

Story

The story has great kicks to it. Even though it revolves around the "hero saving the world" theme, it didn't feel dull to me. It also beautifully captures Oliver's point of view as a kid. Some side quests stories also connects to the main story in an interesting way. It sure is not the best story out there, but it's engaging enough for me.

Combat

Combat feels nice and rewarding. The loot/exp drop are generous enough to kept me going without too much grind. You don't need to grind levels if you are strategic enough in battles and are patience enough to wait for timings. They also implement a reward system if you make a good move (i.e. blocking enemies' attack).
The battles involves creature collecting system which unlocks later in the game as you progress through story. You can mix and match familiars (the game's term for your creature/companion/pet), tho leveling them up in the early game might be frustrating. It's better to stick with what you had at the moment until after you reach mid game when you can easily grind levels.
Boss battle feels challenging enough to kept me trying when I failed and never really force me to grind levels.
The battle do feels a bit grindy and boring at some part of the game since some boss might be hard if you don't have appropriate familiars or equipment at the ready, tho you can always brute force them by spamming consumables.

Art & Music

It is literally design from Studio Ghibli, it didn't need much explaining. The highlight for me though, is that It didn't feel like there are any "lazy design" in the game; everything feels carefully crafted. The battle scenery are varied enough so that it changes if your surrounding is noticeably different even when you're still on the same level/area. The music brings a great atmosphere to the area/level. The sound effect bring joy to battles and helps bringing the world to life.

Game's Downsides/Cons

    • There are some features in the game that feels pointless or too complicated to be useful. The creature collecting part is nice, but some (or perhaps, most) creatures feels very inferior to others to the point where you don't really need to collect lots of creatures. Some creatures feels really strong when you fight them, but feels weak when you catch and train them personally.
    • There are spells that you (Oliver) technically know but can never be use in game, even after you finished the game. I'm a bit disappointed by this since some spells that are usable can only be use at very specific time/area/context.
    • The game features a "combine items" mechanic but render itself useless since it required much time and effort getting the ingredients needed. It's faster to just grind the money and buy the potions/items directly from shops rather than getting them through this mechanic. The equipment you can get is not worth the time required looking for the material. The only time you'll really need this mechanic is when you need evolution item for your familiars.

Other Notes

• I think it has around 40 to 50 hours of gameplay content. I bought it at 70% discount and completed the game plus the end game content which unlocks after you complete the main storyline in about 60 to 70 hours (the extra 10-20 hours are from me trying to get some of the achievements or trying to catch some familiars I find cute).
• You don't really need to grind levels, and if you do, there are places where you can get exp real fast (check out this guide from Dylan).
• There are some boss fight that I didn't expect, so make sure you save the game often enough to avoid feeling regret.
• If you're an achievement competitionist, this one is going to take a lot of your time, so be prepared.

Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch Remastered is a role-playing adventure game where you play as Oliver, a pure-hearted boy who crosses 2 worlds. The objective of the game is to defeat a great evil that has threatened to destroy the world for over 10,000 years, yet has never taken any concrete steps to destroy it. I am a bit underwhelmed because I played Ni No Kuni 2 which is significantly better than this.

Gameplay-wise, I think a controller is essential.

Conclusion, it's ok to try NNKWOTW. I'll add more later. I'm glad I tried NNK 2 before NNK1.

CONS

1. Storywriting is Horrible
In general, the story writing is weird. Who are writers? It's horrible.
a. The comedy show at the Fairygrounds was so cringey.

b. How did you manage to see Pea?
Pea is Cassiopeia. Your mother is Alice. What's the link?

c. Time Travel in Hamelin
Don't you think the Prince would have remembered you? Despite the 15 year gap?

d. 10,000 years of doing nothing
Cassiopeia had 10,000 years to destroy the world.

2. Story - Gallus and the Council.
I get a feeling they were meant to be part of the game but someone deleted them because they couldn't make them in time.

3. Controls
The controls are horrendous for real-time combat. E.g. To completely defend against a boss attack, you have to press SQUARE, move the joystick left x2 and press X to choose "Defend".

4. Bad Translation from Japanese to English
How did Elder Duke become Zodiarchs? How did Holy become Sanctify?

5. Disjointed Parts

6. One Time Use Spells
Poison Apple - Only once to enter the grave
Broom Broom - Only once

They take up space in the menu.

7. Creature Menu
One menu to change their equipment and tricks. Another separate menu to feed them. Why?

8. Pea
I think Pea was meant to be a playable character. She follows you around after the Iron Wyvern. Instead of getting Pea, you get the Prince of Hamelin.

9. Spell System
Unleash is weird. It is a sub-menu that appears as a single spell within Oliver's spell list. However, you get it late in the game after defeating the Blizzard Wolf. By then, you would have killed at least 6 other Guardians. What's the point of summoning them so late in the game?

10. Jumping
Why does jumping not do anything? I thought the Havok Physics Engine would allow you to jump all over the place.

11. Playable Characters
I was wondering if it was Pea and the Frog Prince. I thought those 2 would have been better as playable characters. Instead, you have some shabby man called Gascone as the 3rd playable character.

12. Character Selection in Combat
Why do you need to choose your character? Why do you need to swap the characters?

13. Zodiarchs are Imaginary
12 bosses that followed the Chinese Zodiac; Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. I thought I would have to fight 12 bosses that represented the unique aspect of each animal. Guess what?! They were all imaginary illusions created by Cassiopeia.

9.5/10

Positives:
> Really good story, brings back the inner child within you
> Pretty laid back/chill gameplay
> Easy but still interesting RPG elements; alchemy for making potions and equipment
> A lot of things to do around the world
> Casino mini-game (platoon) is simple enough but still really a ton of fun.

Negatives:
> Sudden difficulty spike
> Grindy gameplay, although this is not a problem for people who likes JRPGs
> The RPG elements; alchemy, wizard companion is a must do so it may lead to confusion to new players with the JRPG genre

Review:
The gameplay is overall laid back and pretty chill for a JRPG. Also the fighting mechanics are simple enough for beginners or people who are new to the JRPG genre to grasp. Overall good gameplay mechanics. One nit-pick that I have is the sudden difficulty spike in the third area of the game.

Overall the game is good to have a relaxing fun time. Although, I can't suggest this game for people who DO NOT LIKE the grinding aspect of a JRPG. If you are trying to find or looking to a more grindy game far from beginner JRPGs, this game is for you. Grindy but still isn't as much as other well-known JRPG titles.

P.S - Deducted a point because of the sudden difficulty spike that can throw off players. Also I still haven't finished the game yet as of posting this review.

The graphical style and the general quality of cutscenes and such are absolutely stunning.
If this was a movie itd be great, however its a game.

The combat system is horrible, it feels like you have barely any control over what happens.
It feels like you are telling your little brother whos holding the controller in a fighting game what to do.

Still, if you wanna get it during sale, the 10€ i paid were worth it, full price might not be worth it simply because the gameplay of this game sucks.

First of all I understand this 'negative' review does not reflect the view of everybody, but I sure hope it is represented in some way.

This game is very good on its own merit, the only flaw is they merge real time battle and tactical battle in ways that are not really the best. Final Fantasy does 'ATP' (active time battle) a lot better and easier to understand long time ago. The story which I have enjoyed so far is great.

But why the negatives? This studio, or developer, or publisher, harvest the success of this game to produce ni no kuni cross world. I don't know if NFT is the way of the future, nobody knows that lets be real. I am fine adults tried it out, you try it out if you are adult. But not ni no kuni, it is for kids. Why put REAL LIFE experimental ideas on a kids game? To extract money from them? No thumbs down, bad company, bad bad.

Do I expect everybody to thumb down with me? No! But among the sea of positive review, do I want a thumb down to stink these greedy companies? YES definitely.

Huge Studio Ghibli fan here, so visually, I think this game is amazing. I didn't play far when I had it on PS3, and I haven't gotten far on PC yet, but from my experience, the only thing I don't like is the combat music. What an amazing game. Never before has a game made me truly feel like a little kid going on an adventure. I loved almost every aspect of this game with only a few minor hiccups along the way, mostly having to do with the combat of the game having a couple of issues. The most annoying of these issues being that enemy attack animations can cause your own attack animations or item usages to be cancelled. What this can sometimes do is cause you to use the mp for a spell without actually casting it or use up an item without actually gaining its effects. The other biggest issue is that items take a long time to use, so you will use an item then nothing will happen for 5 to 10 seconds and then the item will do something. This can get very frustrating when you use a healing item but a party member dies before it actually decides to go off. Also I'm fairly certain they coded drippy to only use his aoe healing the second after a party member dies.

Yoshida Sakiko
Yoshida Sakiko

The game graphic is beautiful and amazing. But again this is another JRPG. Nothing against it though, just that these kind of games tend to describe and explain every single little detail to you (like you're a kid who can't understand a thing), to a point that makes you want to yell "just stfu and let me play already!" Regardless of how rich this story may be, you really need to sit down to spend time and focus. Overall I like the game and again the graphic is great and enjoyable

starcrescendo
starcrescendo

To reiterate what everyone has said: The graphics are great, the story is intriguing, the music is stunning, the characters are cute and likeable, the setting is interesting, the the charm is unmistakable, even for an older game.

But this isn't a movie, its a game. And as it game it completely and utterly fails. If it was easy enough to the point that it was a "walking sim" that would be fine, but they are marketing this as a JRPG game and it is a catastrophe.

The combat and gameplay is awful. Absolutely dreadful. It is hard, unforgiving, clunky, unintuitive, and bad. It is like they took a standard '80s JRPG but then actively thought "how can we make this even worse?" They threw in having to massively grind to be able to even keep up with the story because you go right from point A to point B, even fighting anything that comes in your way along the way, and you will be severely under leveled and have to go back and grind again. Restoratives are impossible to find and you will use up any that you have in the opening area of the game, and then find you can't afford anything so that you can support the endless grind. The battle system is clunky with wide hit boxes for you, and tiny narrow windows for foes. The controls are haphazard and might as well have been presented in greek. You never feel in control, so you're constantly getting chunked for damage while you wrestle with the controls to try and do what you want. You move at a snails pace and enemies close in with speed half of that.

I gave this game a heartful try attempting to see what others found "fun" about it. I really like the story, I'd rather disable all combat and watch the story, but that isn't an option. Instead its almost like they crafted a great story as a reward for slugging your way through this horrible game. If the powers at be hadn't designed the graphics for this game it would be sitting on a shelf at a 2.0. But, because of the graphics studio behind it, it unjustly sits at a 7.0-8.0. I would not recommend this game.

DOCTOR BITCHCRAFT
DOCTOR BITCHCRAFT

In simple words: frustrating, unforgiving and dumb.

It's been 3 years and I still haven't finished the game - and don't plan to, really. This is only considered "good" because it has Ghibli's name plastered all over it. This game is very good in both gameplay and story and I'm happy to see it ported on PC! The creativity and world building is astounding and the boss battles are very fun as well! If I had to give any critiques it would be that traversing through the overworld can feel kinda slow, especially at the beginning of the game. Also the reward for getting all the prizes at the Casino is a little underwhelming.

--SPOILERS--
The post-game content is very interesting although I think the part with the conductor might be new to the remastered version because there's no cut-scenes which is a real shame because I was hoping for some final dramatic or heart-warming cut-scene to neatly wrap everything up. Also the car you get at the end is fun to drive around in but feels a little bit useless since you get it at the end of the game and by then you have Tengri so it's pretty much irrelevant as soon as you get it. Probably my biggest issue though would be that Shadar feels a little underutilized. There's tons of build-up around him and he's a spectacular antagonist but everyone just sorta forgets about him after the White Witch appears, which is a shame.
Those are all just small nitpicks, overall the game is still very fun with a very enjoyable story. I'd give it a solid 7/10

I found this game during one of the most isolated times in my life so I really appreciate this game being the suspension of reality that I needed. One day, I decided to go on wikipedia and see everything that Studio Ghibli has worked on for no reason. I noticed that they worked on a JRPG. I was pretty surprised, yet intrigued. I see that they partnered with a studio called Level-5. The name ringed a bell on the back of my head. Then I thought, "Oh yeah, they made Yokai-Watch." I remember loving that game many years ago. I checked the reviews of ni no kuni, and most people loved the game. Good animators, devs, and reviews. I got the game.

God damn, I loved this game.

Since Studio Ghibli is involved, it's pretty much a given to have good animation with anything they make. No difference with the game.

The story is pretty predictable and cheesy. Doesn't make it bad though. During my play through, I was joking to myself sometimes of what happens next. 5 Seconds later, that exact thing I thought, happened. Something that supports the story a lot is the characters. I loved the characters a lot, especially Jerome (Steam card named Swaine, Jerome. I thought the name was pretty funny so I called him Jerome). Unrelated note, I watched a movie recently that has something like this called "The Bad Guys". It had a predictable story, but it had really good characters which carries the film.

Another given is Joe Hisaishi. He's my favourite composer for a reason. The reason meaning is that he makes constant bangers for each media he works on. I loved the soundtrack so much that I downloaded it. (Wish it was on Spotify)

In terms of JRPG, the gameplay is really good. Like many other games, you gotta grind a lot. You could do that in this game, or you can strategize. At first, the game was really tough for me because I didn't understand much stuff. Then I utilized moving around the battlefield. Things were starting to click, and I was barely dying. Instead of grinding, I used basic ass familiars and beat the game 15 levels under the recommended level. Level 45 The game teaches you each mechanic pretty well, as I understood pretty much every technique by the end of it.

I really got nothing negative to say about this game.
Next, Im'ma see if the second game is also fantastic. It was made 7 years later, so maybe they might have better visuals since the first one was made for the PS3, and this one is for the PS4.

A classic JRPG with no lack of charm. If you're a fan of Studio Ghibli's work, you'll likely enjoy this title. Starts out a little slow, but I haven't been able to put it down once things started rolling and I got accustomed to how the battle system works.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is a story driven JRPG with a compelling story and features mechanics reminiscent of Pokémon. This is most definitely aimed at younger audiences and is a game you could definitely spend over 100+ hours if you wanted to. If you like any of the Ghibli movies but with a Pokémon battle mechanic you'll love this.

Story - 10/10

The story follows Oliver a young boy from Motorville on a journey to save his mother by travelling to another world filled with fantasy, beasts and familiars. The story kept me hooked from start to finish, with a lot of twist and turns, comedic moments through out, that feeling of a grand adventure and a solid overall finish to the story that was satisfying to watch. The cast really came together at the end, as you would expect from a Ghibli style story, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Characters - 10/10

Oliver is one of those characters that any young boy could self insert to, he's often ignorant or clueless at times but it makes sense since he's still young. But the simple fact that he has so much potential and he realises it, enough to even change the hearts of his friends or foes.

Drippy is the heart of the game, blimey eh? He has the best lines in the game, goes through some cool development showing what he's truly capable of. If Oliver is clueless, Drippy is always there to guide him through and pretty much the game would lose so much charm if he didn't exist.

Esther is the first party member you get and is a main stay and she compliments Oliver by providing a great female lead, not only does she have the pressure of measuring up to her father's sage status but is also the only way you can capture new familiars to use.

Swaine is an interesting fellow, he is one of the rough around the edges type of characters but with a heart of gold. Despite all his appearances, he is always finding a way to make things right. Being older than the other two, he provides a good voice.

Shadar being the main antagonist for a large portion of the game provided that sense of impending doom, he would always get in the way of the party and he would win. Causing the party to be setback. He has a compelling backstory to tell and is integral to the flow of events in the world.

White Witch is always watching your every move and it always feels like even though you are progressing there's that nagging feeling that you still haven't gotten close to her yet, when you finally do she also has a great backstory and in the end is a great antagonist.

Many of the other side characters, including the sages, leaders of nations were all interesting and overall there was never a character that I truly disliked.

Gameplay - 8/10

The game has a lot of great rpg elements: puzzle solving, crafting, literally collecting every familiar, fixing broken hearts, side quests. A decently engaging battle system with a lot of possibilities, physical attackers, magic attacks, tanks. Even the playable characters get a lot of skills they can use and later on Oliver gets some kickass magic attacks to play around with.

The battles can be very grindy however, most of the gameplay will revolve around capturing and training familiars to battle for you. Capturing familiars have a set chance they can be captured so there is a chance you could be grinding the same spot just to get the familiar. This is especially evident with a researcher side quest in every region where you have to capture a specific familiar, sometimes multiples of the same one to finish their quest.

Not only that, just like Pokémon the familiars can evolve, some once but others twice. The issue however with this is that they go straight back to lv 1. With lowered stats than their previous evolution at lv 20. Evolution is mainly to increase the stat cap and also access the higher tier moves. But the sheer amount of grind you have to do, for all 9 familiars in your party can be quite time consuming. Not to mention if you change up which ones you use later on, you'll have to grind them up again. Your best bet, like I did would just to google the best ones off the bat and when you finally unlock air travel capture them and then grind.

There is a specific grinding spot where you can hunt Tokotoko, which is the best spot for exp and even that takes ages. So when you do reach a specific level to evolve you will need a stone, either sun moon or star and the way to obtain these items can be quite tedious. You can find specific locations with a shiny that can give you a drop or the more reliable method: You'll have to use steal on Swaine and that has a long windup time.

This goes for the entire crafting system, to be able to make certain items you'll have to hunt down specific familiars, locations and rinse and repeat. Crafting is unavoidable as you'll need to use it to get better equipment to beat stronger enemies and bosses. Crafting however can be very satisfying once you figured it out, being able to bring out your shiny new spear to replace your old one and getting by with ease really made the journey worth it.

Apart from the huge grind fest the game can be, the puzzles were really fun to solve and the was a great incentive to do all of the side quests to fix every person's broken heart. Almost every npc you can interact with in this way and it really a gave a sense that Oliver really was saving the world. One of the best things about the broken heart system is that certain important characters will be heart broken and the only way to save them would be to go back to Motorville and find their counterpart. Going back and helping the people in Motorville really cemented that not only was Oliver just helping people in a fantasy world and when he did finally return home it wasn't a forgotten memory, but he would be able to see the real world effect of his actions in his own hometown.

The whole way they intertwined the worlds even though the vast majority of the time you were in the fantasy is an amazing gameplay idea and it kept every major npc relevant and important.

Another amazing thing they had was the Book, not only does it act as a tutorial, magic or recipe list but it has many hidden lore and puzzle aspects to it. One such puzzle would be to decipher the ancient language you got and there would even be hidden messages within the artwork of the book. This meant that the book never felt like it was just there, but you were actively interacting with it. You could spend a ton of time with just the information the book provides and solve all the puzzles or side quests to your hearts content.

Undead Gambling. Hell yeah.

Art - 10/10
Every area is unique with a wide range of interesting and colourful environments, they have a regular fantasy type kingdom filled with cat folk, am oasis kingdom with a cow as the queen, a steam punk area but everyone is a pig, the fairy god mother. It brings the elements of many Ghibli films to life in a single game; cat returns, porco rosso etc. It could only really be 10/10 for art direction. The graphics still hold up to this day; timeless movie like visuals.

Soundtrack - 10/10
Joe Hisashi composed the soundtrack and another stellar job here, every track just fits perfectly. Obviously if you do spend
a lot of time on the world map, that theme can get repetitive and stale after listening to it for the 100th time in a row but I think that would happen with most tracks anyway. My personal favourite track was drippy's theme. With the fairy ground as a close second.

The voice actors did a fantastic job on the English dub, whoever they casted for Drippy, that was perfect and he really brought so much life to the scenes, he was stealing most of the show. The other voice cast did a great job too.

Overall - 9.6/10
Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch is a must play for JRPG fans, or anyone looking for a Ghibli movie but as a game instead. Do note the grind fest. Anyone who's played Pokemon; this is right up your alley.

Ni no Kuni is a sensory delight. The graphics and soundtrack are wonderful, there's no question, and the voice acting, while variable has some real highlights.

Unfortunately, that's basically where the success stops.

The game's storyline is uneven, featuring moments that are touching and poignant, but relying mostly on "visit a string of great elders and have them each enlighten you so you can go beat the big bad(s)." The lazy writing also extends to the characters, which are hit or miss. A few sidequests are humorous, most are lifeless fetch quests.

Until now, I've avoided discussing combat and traveling, which is odd, because that's where you spend most of your time. The reason is that they're awful. Combat is a mish-mash of FFXII without the control (your AI-controlled party members are complete morons, and you can give them only the vaguest of direction), pokemon (but catching things is completely random), and stat-checks (meaning grinding is a primary answer to your problems). There are also pseudo-quick-time-events on bosses. Traveling is slow. Sloooow. SO slow. You can try to avoid enemies to speed things up, but 90% of them are faster than you, and the game's "stealth" mechanic (sneak up on or sneak by enemies while their backs are turned) is extremely unreliable. So you end up fighting a lot of battles. Each area has 3-4 enemy types, and a minimum of a dozen battles. This includes overworld travel between areas.

Overall, this is a game that desperately needed to stop looking backwards at "how JRPGs used to be in the 90s" and start thinking about what would make the most enjoyable JRPG experience possible. If you can wade through the tedious walking, heavy dose of repetitive battles, and ignore the boring parts of the story there're visual and audio delights to enjoy while experiencing the better plotlines, but your time is almost certainly better spent elsewhere.

The amount of tediousness that occurs throughout the game is actually absurd. Where most RPG's (before and after the original release of this game) will let you do an action in the right spot as long as it's the right action in the right spot, Ni No Kuni says "No, even though you know exactly what to do, first you must have this conversation that you don't care about and will forget immediately and is way too long, and then you can perform the action, but if you choose not to perform the action, you need to have the conversation again." One example of many, which causes a very bloated time in the playthrough experience that could probably have been cut in half and still feel like a very complete game.

With that said, I still think this is actually a very very good game. There is definitely a lot to do, the Wizard's Compendium that you get in the beginning of the game, while also an addition to the tedium, is actually a very interesting way to incorporate a game guide without needing a game guide. The dialogue is very juvenile, but the story is your typical JRPG story with its own spin that is done very well. If you want to be more immersed into the experience, the game even has an option to toggle off the mini-map so you can actually feel like you're in the world instead of just doing a walking simulator.

The combat is different, and I think my opinion of the combat system is that if you actually build your characters properly, combat isn't bad, but if you build your characters remotely improperly, combat is EXTREME pain. You may give yourself some spoilers if you look up combat guides, but I almost think it's worth it (or you can just play on easy mode which as someone who always tries to play every game on their hardest difficulty would not think it shameful to pick easy difficulty).

I'm not quite done yet, but I'm definitely far enough along to be able to recommend this one for people who are looking for a classic JRPG experience with a unique take. However, if the bloated tediousness is enough to turn you away, I would for sure recommend the The Legend Of Heroes (Trails of Sky and Steel) series which have plenty of length, and almost feel like you're taking part in a multi season anime.

Nice story with cute animations and lovely/unique characters! But it's quite a bit of grind in it which I didn't expect and the combat mode is kinda weird because you have to scroll through many menus and choose a attack in real time, but it's still a 9/10 game for me

My Experience:

Tidy mun! :D

ART/GAME DESIGN: 10/10 Beautiful World and characters, love the Studio Ghibli Animation and Music. Japanese sub its perfect.
STORY: 9/10 : It's a beautiful story, the ending expands from the OG (DS version) For the extra villain, which is fine, just felt it ended abruptly , left me feelings like that it? But there is a lot of lore and supporting characters that expand the ninokuni world as well as the real world which I enjoyed. World building alone is greatly and its worth exploring.
BATTLE SYSTEM 7/10: Pokemon Hybrid situation, evolutions and all that plus you have the main characters fighting and their own familiars;most of the time you are on your own while they do nothing; took a bit getting used to but ok. I played on easy for the story (what little time life allows me), chile, I have never had to grind so hard on easy mode lmao. But I can see what they were going for, just a wonky execution but workable.

Other things to note is a lot of fetch quest, like it is integral to the game as merit points but I did not mind them again because it expanded the story of the world and their residents. There is cool things to do with alchemy and collecting pages for your Wizards Companion and other fun things to do along the main story-line. All in all I recommend this game, a nice jrpg that really delivers in art, story, music, and lore. Be prepared to put in a lot of hours.

The game is a fun romp and a beautiful RPG with a wholesome story. The problem with the 'remastered" version is that it was not brought up to the minimal standards of today's games and as a result, it is disrespectful of the players time. There is no quick save and save points are spread thinly so if you are looking to pause the game to do something else... tough luck... keep playing... there's no save point around. Either that or lose your progress. Is there a tough series of fights in the overworld... did you die? Tough luck, game over, lose your money and your life and your progress.

I don't have time for games that don't respect mine.

Ni No Kuni is a 10/10 well written JRPG. The story starts off strong and ends strong. Altho the middle is tedious and wearisome. I am CONVINCED the person or people who wrote the beginning and ending sequences of the game did not work on the middle. Its that bad. I forced myself to play the game during those segments while bitching to friends and I am glad I did because the payoff was tremendious. Even the ending, without spoilering anything I was expecting a forced "good" ending but the game ends satisfyingly without betraying its core themes.

Now in terms of gameplay tho, its a 7.5/10. Simply because the "Pokemon" creature capture mechanic needs to be adjusted. Adjusted to make it easier to capture the "pokemon" and get the upgrade gems without spending LITERAL HOURS to get 1 "pokemon" or upgrade gem. Levelling up should also be made easier. Yes you can grind on Toko's but it is very time consuming. So I would increase the encounter rate by 2.5x to compensate for this.

Honestly the reason very few people finish this game on steam would be because levelling and capturing your pokemon is a MISSION so there is not enough time on a casual playthrough to experiment effectively. And there is the middle section of the game that is lack lustre.

A potential 10/10 that is a solid 8.5/10 game that would need an hour of coding to fix the gameplay and a month of rework to fix the storytelling for the mid-section of the game.

Note: I have not touched the post-game so anyone who has finished the game, please advise if I should complete it on a later date. I however do not want to do it because as I have mentioned, the gameplay with the "pokemon" mechanic needs work.

Context before reading it: the last JRPG that I've played is FF7 on PSX, so Ni no Kuni WotWW is my first JRPG after that, and it blows me away. This really feels like the classic 90's JRPG that I've been missing all these years.. with monster/familiar collecting done so well it'll surprise you even after post-game! The game might be hand-holding you for something new but only for 30-40% and leaves the rest at your hand. The fighting mechanic is a mix of turn-based and real time combat but think of it as you commanding your familiars rather than directly controlling it (yes you can directly control their movement but that's it), which really makes sense for the battle mechanic. plus the story is very, very good... nicely wrapped up towards the end. the symbolism of a boy's coming of age journey is greatly felt here accompanied by Joe Hisashi's soundtrack. It is honestly a 4.5 out of 5 for me.

Fibulator

I loved Ni No Kuni: Revanant Kingdom. It's in my top games list.

This, however, is hot garbage. I have no idea who their target audience is. The main character is 7-9 years old, and the story, characters, and artwork seem heavily targeting 7-9 year olds... Then you get to the combat. It's dark souls level difficult. Right out the gate. First boss fight was so absurdly hard (I was doing essentially no damage, and it was hitting me for 50% of my max health, while my heals only healed for 25% my max... and he'd hit me twice while I cast the first heal... killing me) that I thought I was *SUPPOSED* to die. Each and every fight is like that... unless you're over leveled... then it's trivial. Stats are almost identical... but apparently there's some hidden mechanic that *WAY* over emphasizes level. This is made dramatically worse by the fact that when you catch familiars, they start at level 1. Even worse, is every so many levels you are supposed to "evolve" them... which takes your level 20 pet... and send them back to 1.

Then the story just gets... stupid. *Small spoiler* You have to go in some fat woman... and help coax her babies to come out... I kid you not. These fights are so out landishly difficult, I switch difficulty to easy. My very first fight after setting to easy: I was party wiped before I could even pull up my combat menu. (And there's no pausing for you to make decisions. They will pummel the **** out of you while you're trying to find the menu item you're looking for.) That wasn't even a boss! That was a trash pack!

After using tons of items, I managed to get past it. Then... the boss is up next. It summons 10? more... each of these hit for about 25% of my max health. Ya, I couldn't spam heals fast enough.

And don't even get me started on spells. "Oh look, a new spell... hmm it might help a tiny amount... WTF?!? It costs 40% of my max mana? For an inconsequential amount of boost?" Ya, all the spells are like that. Attack spells that won't even make a pixel's worth of damage... 75% of max mana.
Again... ON *EASY*.

Supposedly you're just supposed to grind for *hours* to level up to make it trivial. *facepalm* No amount of tactics makes up for bad game design. And this is probably the worst I've seen of any game, ever.

Everything else is dumbed down for toddlers. The "familiars" are so simplistically designed, they resemble miniature telly-tubbies. Story: Written for toddlers. Graphics: Pretty... for toddlers. Cutscenes: Great... for toddlers.

So, unless you have a toddler that's beaten all the Dark Souls, knows how to read, and is a master of chess... don't get this game.

Most beautiful, atmospheric JRPG I've played in a long time. JRPGs are usually a hit or miss for me, but the charm, interesting gameplay, music, and of course the Ghibli story and aesthetic bring this to a whole new level. The combat system is awful 90% of the game, if you don't play on easy mode you'll spend another 40-50 hours grinding per region to catch up to the mobs around you, your teammates are useless and don't know what to do half the time forcing you to either micro-manage or solo the boss fights frequently, the story is pretty nice and art/music is amazing of course, but stereotypical of all ghibli movies, definitely worth if its on sale, otherwise I wouldn't spend the whole $50.

I adore this game very very much, and it's right up there with it being one of my most favorite JRPGs. I've played this numerous times on PS4 and once on PC. If your a big fan of Studio Ghibli and classic simple JRPG elements, you'll love this game. I'd would defiantly recommend it and I'd give this game a soild a 9/10. The story is very gripping and emotional that will leave you want to keep playing until the very end, it starts and ends very satisfyingly. Not only that the level design, the characters, world design, post game, and the music I thought was fantastic. Though, the gameplay and the difficulty settings has some flaws. The battles and bosses can be very frustrating. First off, playing on "easy" mode is basically playing the game on normal, while "normal" mode is hard mode. It defiantly does take some time getting used to the combat, but once you get used to it its easy. It also requires a hell of a lot of grinding and can take hours if you want to take on the post game bosses. Aside those flaws, it's a really great JRPG and I'd recommend this to all JRPG and anime lovers out there. Definitely worth the $50 or even better when its on sale.

I really really really wanted to like this game. I don't care much for the Ghibli art style, but I really truly like the core gameplay. characters and story are ok, they are written very simply, like for children's media. my biggest gripe: GRINDFEST

it is way too grindy because:
- there are a lot of seemingly random difficulty spikes that you HAVE to grind to get over, period. not fun.
- if you want to own every familiar (because imo they are the most interesting part of the game), GOOD LUCK. "taming" the familiars is luck based and of course some have obscenely low tame rates. THIS is why my playtime is so high, not because I really loved the game.
