Yoko has a weird way of telling a story but it's always entertaining and filled with surprises. His games mock with themselves and even though some game mechanics give you some boredom or cancer, you tolerate them because story is filling. Even though I didn't play the original 'version', this one is really great, it has a really slow start but when story reaches to a certain point, you can't stop playing because of the curiosity and lore is really interesting. Also this game makes you lose hope in everything, not gonna lie but at least it somehow manages to point something very human. Probably I need to revisit Nier:Automata but for now I'll enjoy the journey I had. (Except some boring gaming mechanics which surprisingly fit into the game, this one is a really good game)
Having never played this game before, and coming from Automata, I had to refund my purchase.
I was able to (slightly) excuse the inane fetch quests when I learnt that they were included as satire of gameplay mechanics from games at the time, as well as the mundane boss mechanics of the first 'boss' of the game where you just throw a bomb in his mouth over and over. Satire, I get it.
Where I drew the line, however, was fighting the giant shade on a platform hanging over an giant chasm. Not only was the fight comprised of boring, telegraphed moves ad nauseum, but some of the attacks had a knockback effect that threw me off the platform. Over and over again. After the fourth time I died, I rage quit and gave up.
This is an old game, and I feel people who haven't played it in years gone by will struggle to enjoy what I was really hoping would be more of the same as Automata. Play Automata, then read the wiki for this, this isn't an enjoyable experience
Underwhelming combat and shallow RPG mechanics are more than made up for by the phenomenal writing, ever-evolving story, astonishing soundtrack and interesting gameplay elements.
-idiotic characters
-worst side quest design ı have ever seen in a game(fetch quests, lots of them...)
-4 unique enemies for the entire game
-repetitive combat
+deep lore
The soundtrack makes every cutscene in the game hit that much harder. I don't think I've cared about loud my volume is before, but now I'm playing this game full blast with a fantastic headset on. Truly the best way to enjoy this game to its fullest potential.
although... if you are new to SQUARE ENIX games, be prepared to not understand anything up until the VERY last cutscene
I don't regret playing this game as it is pretty good, but it is also very clearly not for everyone. Hence why I wouldn't recommend it to the average person. This game has a lot of great aspects to it, but also some that stale the experience.
The game has lots of great characteristics. Amazing music, interesting lore, very fun dialogues between the characters, voice acting is really good, combat is pretty good, boss fights are cool, environment is good, and graphics is decent. It was NieR:Automata and this game's superb soundtrack that got me into it, and the music and characters that kept me.
I recommend to turn up music a bit louder than default to vibe with it much better throughout the game :)
The music's so good that on many occasions I would stop doing that I was doing, even during a boss fight just to listen to the whole epic soundtrack.
In this game and in NieR:Automata, they do this awesome thing of smoothly changing the gameplay style. Usually it's played in 3rd person, 3D, but they often switch to platformer style, top-down camera, etc. It gives it a very dynamic and fresh take on the same sort of gameplay.
However, there's some big downsides to this game. One is kinda related to Yoko Taro's directive style. He likes to have multiple endings based on the same story-line. Conceptually this idea is great, but it's a slippery slope to implement in practice. The gameplay for all "endings" are almost identical, except for some extra scenes inserted/removed here and there. While this allows you to show the perspectives of multiple parties given one story line (which is VERY interesting), it also means that you essentially must spend over a dozen hours replaying the game just to obtain a bit more lore. It wouldn't be so much of problem if not for the most common criticism of its repetitive and abundant fetch quests.
While I don't think their fetch quests are that bad and I didn't mind them too much, it does become a problem when there are too many of them, especially if you're going to be replaying the game multiple times to see the different endings. There are a decent amount of quests which just makes the player fetch materials, which I obviously avoided.
But on a happier note, I do appreciate that many side-quests give you more of a adventurous description/riddle to investigate rather than pin-pointing the exact place on the mini-map that you must go to like in most games nowadays.
There's also a stylistic cutting-corner choice which isn't too bad, but can be off-putting. Whenever the game want to transition to a cut-scene during a boss-fight, they choose to essentially "jump" the player into the right place for it instead of doing something more smooth/consistent. The ending to boss fights also end in very similar ways using the characters abilities.
The "endings" are good, but I didn't have too much of a shock or aha moment which I expect was the intention of those parts. This concern is likely more of a me thing, I'm kind of a hard nut to crack, maybe because I played NieR:Automata and hence expected this sort of lore and style.
Overall, as I have listed, there is a lot of good going on in this game, but I don't think the fetch quests and the little change between the replays of the game is worth pursuing for most people. I'd recommend this game if these issues were less significant. On the other hand, if you're interested in this game, I would strongly recommend checking out NieR:Automata.
NieR:Automata is also directed by Yoko Taro, so it's style is similar to of NieR Replicant, but from what I remember it's a major upgrade for the negatives listed in this review. The melee combat is significantly smoother, graphics is better, music is on par, the quests are on average better, and most importantly, there is much bigger difference in perspective and gameplay between part A and part B (although both follow the same storyline, so there's still a chance you could get tired of it). Part C then builds upon and glues the lore presented in the first two parts to lead to a much more epic climax of the entire narrative across all parts.
Good game. I suggest getting it on sale.
Be prepared to replay significant portions of the game a few times to get all endings.
The Nier series is one I sincerely believe young artists and scholars will be studying a century from now as one of the most important achievements of the medium. Play this game, and pay attention to everything it has to offer. Every side quest, every camera shot, every overheard snippet of dialogue. This and Automata are the kinds of experiences that change you.
If this is on sale, buy it. If it's full price, buy it. If they decide to charge you $300 for the luxury of playing it, STILL buy it.
This is a great game thanks entirely to its story telling! The combat works overall and isn't bad and the boss fight are neat but drag on a little to long especially on higher difficulties. With that said if you liked Nier Automata then you will like this.
- the story is very emotional and intriguing but there are so many plot-holes
- the characters are lovable and each very interesting
- the gameplay is mediocre hack-and-slash, but still much better than the original
all that said, this game is SO FUCKING TEDIOUS that i cannot recommend it to anyone other than diehard fans of the series
- the side-quests are simply brainless: please go kill X mobs or collect X items
- the backtracking and revisiting areas is annoying
i love the game and the series in general but man is this one a slog
Great game, its a great action JRPG with a good story and characters, but don't read too much about it before buying it, its got lots of spoilers online. on a related note, its better if you get this game before Automata, even though Nier: Automata is a longer, slightly better game, because parts of Automata spoil this one.
I got spoiled on the story myself, before playing it. It still holds up excellently even when its spoiled, but it's still better to play Yoko Taro's games when you don't know what will happen.
Dont make the same mistake i did.
Dont buy this game because you like Automata.
This game is EXTREMLY slow, boring, and normal difficulty its almost impossible to die.
you got vast empty areas, boring fetch quests and slow escort missions.
I'm a big fan of Nier Automata, I've played it on PS4 when it first came out and I really loved the game, but I can't say the same for this one
Look, I know its story is great and the soundtrack is just marvelous but I came here to play so first I will check the gameplay, and I dunno what to say about that, I tried to like the gameplay but it's so old, and the game is supposed to be a remake of the original but I'm just disappointed to see how old and sometimes boring the gameplay is ...
If u r a fan of the series and u just wanna listen to an awesome OST's and came for a good story but u don't care about the gameply or u just wanna some relax time with no much challenge in the game then u gonna enjoy this one
If looked at as a standalone game, this one is very good. ACG rated it as barely worth buying at full price and I agree. It's an older game and the gameplay, environment, quest design, ect show that. While this is an upgraded version of the base game, I'd call it more of a remaster and less of a remake. Music is great, though on my first time playing this version I became incredibly annoyed at how often some songs repeat either due to the loop being very short or how often the song is used, regardless of the quality of the song itself. For example, I love Kaine's theme, but hearing it over and over makes it lose it's impact on me. Also, some songs I prefer the older versions from Replicant/Gestalt so I'd love an option that let you have the older music play like the Halo MCC has. All in all, very good game, good story, great lore, great voice acting, great music, tedious side quests (looking at you fishing), pretty good combat.
This is actually my second time owning this game. Had it on Xbox and didn't get to finish all of the game and get all of the 5 endings. I enjoyed every single minute of playing this masterpiece. Game play is smooth with fluid combat. But the combat is just a cherry on top of what this game actually is. If you played Nier:Automata then you will love this game even more. The story is something that still makes me want more and more of it. Characters to fall in love. It's something everyone should enjoy.
There are many things I could say about videogames. They can be joyful, challenging, fun, but for NieR, I call it beautiful and it is best experienced by knowing as little of it as possible. If you're looking for that, then its best to stop reading now.
A Short Description
It's been about a month since I last beat Replicant, and although I never played the original, many modern NieR fans like myself became enamored by Automata. With that in mind, I went into this game with the mindset that I was gonna have the same experience.. It was phenomenal, from the very beginning it captivated me with its premise: A brother who wants to cure his sister from an evil curse, not too bad for your standard shounen anime, so I gave it a chance. At first, I didn't find the main character memorable until the game kept progressing, along with his companion Grimoire Weiss or even Kaine (Emil is already memorable lets be honest), who made a kickass intro. Kaine was a great contrast to your typical ally in videogames, she is a woman with her own purpose, her own ambitions and has a heart for revenge. Weiss was more than comedic relief in my opinion, his presence was very much important as it was with Kaine and Emil. And Emil is as kind and fun loving as he was in Automata, glad to see more of him. This cast of unique characters semented a place in my heart as the best protagonists of any game I've played. I won't get into specifics but the game goes wild. beyong expectations of Automata, but however.. its gameplay is kind of dated.
The Game Itself
You swap from Hack and Slash to Bullet Hell in an instant, but its combat is very easy to exploit pnce you figure out the techniques, practically trivializing the difficulty. But I don't play NieR for its gameplay, but rather that It tells a story in a way that only a videogame would. truly a masterpiece. The game was revolutionary in its time from the amount of replayability the same way with Automata. One of the most fascinating aspects of the game is the music and the people who reworked the game from the ground up, changing its story even from the original slightly as well as the remastered soundtrack. In the original NieR, our protagonist was a dad, in search for a cure for his daughter, which raises the stakes even higher and makes it so much more personal, but in Replicant, you are a brother instead. The original NieR is called NieR or NieR:Gestalt. This has very important implications later in the story.
The Soundtrack
The soundtrack is the best my ears have been blessed with hearing. I'm sure I wasn't the only one that listened to the Song of Ancients and instantly gave the game a 10 for the track alone. But is the game a one trick pony with its soundtrack? not at all. The game features the most diverse songs and music you'll ever hear in any game. Each place you visit in the game, from the adventurous Plains of the North, to the Junk Pit to the East, or The Seaside from the West, the Atelier, The Desert or even the Boss Fights, they all invoke that special feeling you can get in games with such a stellar score.
The Truth
The story is very upsetting. from its premise, the setting and the state of the world we live in as well as its characters. Nobody Wins in this Game. Even at the end, I didn't feel like I won, it felt like I just finished a long lasting battle.. one hopefully I can tell everyone interested in seeing games as art.
I wholeheartedly believe I didn't deserve to witness this game, it had the same effect I had with the Persona series and its one of my top games of all time.
10/10
this game is awesome but i could drink 24 ounces of water with a fork before getting to ending d alone
I may secretly like it a bit more than automata (and I love automata). The story, the characters, THE MUSIC!
It has it's flaws but if you can get over some old-school design elements you'll have a one of a kind experience.
For me it was a nice semi-retro nostalgia trip but even I find some parts a bit tedious so some younger people may be put off by it.
I wish they sold the soundtrack on steam? It's a masterpiece that will drill itself into your skull.
It's weird playing this after NieR:Automata, 15 mins in and I'm already making connections between the games. But NieR Replicant is another great JRPG. It has a lot to live up to after NieR:Automata, but I know it will be good.
"Kyaaa hah hah! Looks like you're having yourself a grand ol' time, Sunshine!"
Keep playing until you get the TRUE ENDING.
I picked this game up because I had played Nier: Automata. I'm gonna be honest, this isn't as good as that game was, but it was still a solid experience. The level design and mission structure was very similar, and the combat was as well. Now, the combat in this game was some of the easiest video game combat I have ever experienced, so don't go in expecting this game to be a massive challenge or anything, but there were enough combat encounters and boss fights that it still felt like I had to at least try in order to progress.
Also yes, the extremely sexualized female character trope from Automata is present here as well, in case that was what interested you about this series (which I can respect).
Anyway, I think that you will probably like this is you have played Automata before. And if you haven't, you don't need to have played that game before in order to get some enjoyment out of this one. Solid game, and a pretty good remaster from what I understand (I never played the original version, I can just say that this version is very well optimized).
A fresh coat of paint wasn't enough to save this for me. It feels dated and I didn't enjoy any of the gameplay. Don't tough it out, it's okay to walk away.
Speaking as someone who utterly adored the original western release of Gestalt back on the PS3, flaws and all, this game scratches a very specific itch and tugs on more than a few heartstrings. I'm on the fence about the reworked soundtrack because the original one from a decade back remains in regular rotation on my playlists, but the visual tweaks and accelerated combat are great fun. Runs excellently on a mid-tier graphics card from 2018.
I didn't like this one nearly as much as automata the book was the best character and the whole thing felt like it was moving at a snails pace from start to finish, but its not a bad game just a weak NieR game
The game's soundtrack alone is worth the price. But there's some great characters and an emotional story as well. Plus some decent action RPG combat if that's your thing. It's not mine and normally I'd never play this type of game, but everything else made it worth it.
SPOILERS ALERT!!!!!!!!!
All contents completed. (A+B+C+D+E Endings + all side quests + all achievements other than the speed-run one)
Let's be honest, it is a piece of crap with candies added in. It is filled with outdated game design, uncompleted storytelling, and unnecessarily prolonged gametime.
For the good part, the music is undoubtedly a masterpiece. I sometimes, at least during the first play-through, stop to listen to the music and get killed by the boss. The tone fits the theme of the plot and the world settings so well that the tedious gameplay seems non-existent.
But the good part stopped here, all other parts of the game are crap.
- Outdated action game mechanics. I know they significantly upgraded the combat system in this semi-remake but it still feels bland and dull after the first few hours. The difficulties are too easy even in hard mode as the only difference is the enemies having 15X the normal health pool, which makes the already tedious fighting more lengthy. You have too many consumables and most times you are just smashing left and right click with dodges to attack mindlessly and replenish health when low. The magic is useless as they need to charge and have lower damage, only useful when the game forces you (like when hitting Boss' weak spot in range) and there is no danger in getting closer to your enemies at all. After my second play-through (including the 15 levels of nightmares), I just downloaded a cheat mod to one-hit KO anyone, as I have enough of it. Recommended for anyone trying this game, the combat has no point whatsoever.
- Tedious Side quests. They didn't amend those outdated designed side quests in this remake so they are a pain in the ass. Forces you to run through the map back and forth a thousand times and collect materials that can definitely don't come out even if you clear the whole area where it should be spawning. As the above, I just cheated the material out and finish those stupid quests to watch if there are any story came along, oftentimes no.
- Deliberately prolonged game time. To unlock all endings, you need to collect all the weapons in the game, which has absolutely no effect on the plot, just a stupid requirement set to prolong your playing time, at least they didn't require you to upgrade all of them, ha-ha! And for the endings, I praise the design to reveal the truth after playing it from a "fake" point of view followed by a real and completed one. And that's my point, it is totally unnecessary to have me play it 4 times, 4.5 if you count ending E. The endings are not mutually exclusive at all! They can definitely limit the endings to 3. The first one is without the dialogue from the shades, as Nier is a blinded self-proclaimed hero WITH the Kaine losing control together! (Ending A+C) It makes no sense that they can't be combined, just force you to kill Kaine and watch ending C plus A's cutscene, why not? The second one can be B+D, with the dialogue from the shades revealed, saving Kaine by erasing savedata. That makes no difference from now and I only need to play it twice! (AC(1)+BD(0.5)+E(0.5)=2)
As above, I turned on turbo cheat after the second play-through to boost the game speed to 10X the normal speed to fast forward all the stuff, just to watch the endings. (One hit KO + Unlimited material/money + Game clock 10X, that's how desperate I was)
All of the above points exhausted and annoyed me so much that only a magnificent story could save this game. So, did it? Yes and No.
I've not played Automata and I planned to, so I decided to try this prequel first without knowing anything about the story except it has multiple playthroughs.
The first playthrough, is just an old-fashioned 'hero save the world' story. However, it felt wrong to me as everything seemed weird, I knew some important stuff was missing. Halfway through, after I know about Emil's past as a test subject plus the world is 1412 yrs later, I suspected the shade I had been fighting all along was indeed human transformed, maybe have lost consciousness after years of transformation. I started to think if I was really a true human, what if I am just a replicant/android or some stuff created by humans. The plot is fascinating so I really enjoyed it and was looking forward to knowing the truth. I suspected Devola and Popola to be the mastermind of the whole thing as they didn't age. No surprise to see them at the Shadowlord's castle. And they told me my guessing is near the truth, I was indeed not human. Then the game end without any further explanation. I expected to know all the details after I have run through all the endings.
The results were, so damn disappointing. All the new information I got from the following playthrough was just the dialogues of the shade I defeated, no backstories whatsoever! What causes the creation of Gestalt? What happened to the Project in the past 1000+ years? What were the twins' duties? Why aren't they telling me the truth? Why isn't Yonah (the one who is supposed to know at least something about the world) say anything before committing suicide? She could talk my language, come on! WTF! What happened after the end? Does Yonah got cured? Who is the administrator? How do I suddenly revive? So many questions, all unanswered. I don't mind stories having a bad ending and all the hard work the characters have done mean nothing. That provide a sad and sensational feeling after I played. But this? The story is just not finished! I expect an explanation and it provided me with more mysteries! WTF?
Finally, I go searching for information online to get a thorough understanding of the story, at the cost of spoiling myself some content in the Automata (Human extinct eventually). The story is indeed touching and very well-written. It can definitely leave a mark on my heart. But the game itself failed to tell me anything meaningful, I might as well go watch videos online from the get-go or after the first play-through. The following content is boring, repetitive, and most importantly, meaningless. So, judging solely on the game's story, it's an uncompleted piece of crab.
So, final verdict. The game is bad, even if you only need a good story like me. I recommend you just watch a video online. If you, unfortunately, bought it for its over-the-sky price ( I bought it half price but damn, I want a refund), I suggest an immediate refund. If you really want to try it out, turn on easy mode and auto-fight, maybe a cheat mod.
I am so disappointed now that I doubt if I should buy Automata. Maybe I should just watch a video to save my money.
Damn!
the game has been out for a year and a half and those mfs still wont even release a patch to anything
I really liked this game but why the hell did you make endings like that? It could be changing with our decisions. Why am i need to finish the story like 5 times? Its so absurd... Anyways
OST is a masterpiece
Story is a masterpiece (What an emotional story that was)
Characters are cool (Especially Weiss and Emil)
Gameplay is meh (For a 2021 game but nevertheless its fun)
Awesome game with great music and good characters that make you feel depressed but interested in their backstories 10/10 for me
Nier: Automata is a far better experience. If you're a new player I highly suggest playing Nier: Automata first despite it being the sequel. To explain I'll have to go into more depth- the most basic explanation I'd give is that I played through Nier: Automata TWICE with a total playtime of ~58hrs. The comparative gametime for Nier: Replicant was a single playthrough at ~42hrs and imo about half the amount of emotions I'd felt with the sequel. Automata does everything Replicant does, but better- and in half the time. I played this because I wanted more content and feel like I didn't get anything more out of the series.
The big issue is that in Replicant you replay through the second half of the story in Endings B, C, and D. Then in Ending E you replay through around 2-3 hours of the start of the game. For Replicant, Kaine is like an afterthought and we get some small contextualization for each Shade fight- but a majority of them (3) fall flat. The only two that try to dig some sort of emotion from you are the Robot Shade and the Ship Shade. All of the Endings also aren't the greatest- as none of them feel like a conclusive narrative- especially looking back at Ending D being the original end end of the game. Ending E for it's limited span was such a breath of fresh air after repeating the same scenarios so much. Comparatively in Automata you only replay through the first game scenarios in Ending B, but lean MUCH more on 9S as the Narrator. Endings C and D have some minor overlap but I don't think are comparable to the suffering that is Replicant. The endings there are just entirely better overall whether you want to choose C, D, or E. Automata covers similar story beats but just does everything so much better. To me Devola and Popola fell completely flat in Replicant- and I don't think that's just because it was spoiled for me- as the characters didn't get me emotionally invested to care. Which I think is an issue with every character IN Replicant. I think there was potential to be had- Kaine's backstory at the start of Ending B was the only one that won me over.
My 'big' issue is that the characters suffer from stiff face syndrome. I laughed at some cutscenes when a character was SUPPOSED to be super upset but their face was blank.
Even after completing the game fully and almost getting 100% achievs I still want to replay this game a year later. The type of game where you enjoy it, you'll miss it and will want to play again.
This game is just beauty in it's purest form. Everything that transpired just left me in sheer awe of the story that was being told. YOKO TARO and his team are creative geniuses who deserve every once of praise they get. I recommend this game to anyone, and you don't even have to have played Automata to understand the story. 10/10 game.
Square! You dumbass! How can someone with such big final fantasy money give us both Niers but no Drag-on Dragoon!? 'Oh automata, I love you automata! Come over to FF14 and give every WOL a big sloppy kiss automata!' Now pull your head out of your goddamn ass and start fucking porting Drakengard 3!
Its a great game with a ton of content, you definitely get your moneys worth. it is a great game with a very compelling story i definitely would recommend you playing its very thought provoking and has many twists and turns and a roller coaster of emotions all the way through.
First play through, yeahh die you monsters!
Second play through, hey guys can we have a talk about it?
Third play through, maybe i can do something different, maybe there's a hidden path?
One of the best game ever, thank you Yoko Taro! The side mission kinda annoying a little bit, but other than that everyone should play it. Plus there's kaine, what's more to ask?
Compared to NieR Automata I have to say I liked this game way better first of all the leveling didn't feel to overpowered like it did in Automata (wasn't able to oneshot the shadowlord like I did Nines) secondly the combat felt so much better I since in Automata without a controller its incredibly tedious to control the camera and dodge. I enjoyed the characters in this way more than Automatas and the music was far superior to Automatas. In conclusion this game is a 10/10 while automata is 7.5/10. P.S. Lousie Fight 3 hit hard!
The game is good. The bosses are a highlight though the common enemies do not have much variety. But all the different ending really adds a good amount of replayability to the game. 3.5/5 for me
Game is pretty decent and worth to play if u buy it on sales. It is not that good like Nier Automata (imo) but still u can give this game a shot. If someone don't care about achievements and side quests (side quests are really boring here) will finish the games quite fast. From the other hand if u want do some achievements and see whole story that u can find here better prepare (especailly mentaly) yourself for little grinding and repeat few times in a row excactly the same part of the game. That was annoying and should be changed a little but I was really satisfied when I finally reach to the end story cutscenes:)
When I beat NieR 7 years ago, I knew then and there that it would be one of the reasons why I would continue to play video games.
If you think this will be like Automata, you won't be wrong, but not right either. The combat and having to go back and forth throughout the game is tedious. Some of the remade voice lines have worse delivery than the original, same with some of the remastered music (except Blu-Bird imo.)
The remaster isn't perfect. The game isn't perfect. But it's special. After all, I'd rather experience something meaningful and genuine by someone who made it, than something perfect for money...
An amazing storyline coupled with one of the best casts I have ever seen in a video game. Highly recommend.
Yet another masterpiece of Yoko Taro's design but this time remastered. Definitive way to play the game now.
Combat 5/10
Combat felt bland and repetitive: most of the enemies have one or two attack patterns (bosses maybe have 3 or 4) once you get the shield power up you can pretty much tank everything including the bosses.
I only really enjoyed two bosses the Aerie boss, where you have to platform around to hit the weak spots because its so massive, and the Underground mansion boss, where I just felt like the attack patters where more unique and well thought out.
Side quests are tedious and 95% of the time don't reward you with anything except money, which you don't really even use that often. I remember doing 3 hours of grinding just to do the contractor side quest. In order to upgrade a weapon it takes at least an hour of going in and out of the same area to get the parts you need. Might as well just use that time to progress enough to get a better weapon anyway.
Story 6/10
Story is nice, some of it is cute and sweet while other parts are heartwarming or show how some of the main characters each had their own challenges to overcome. It would be considerably better if there weren't a book with an English accent bouncing and wiggling across 70% of the cut scenes. I really felt like the book ruined any semblance of what would've been a deep or emotional part of someones story.
Areas 4/10
Some of the areas where quite enjoyable to play through, the Aerie had a spectacular boss fight (as mentioned before) Other areas like Fan-fiction forest; where you have to read through paragraphs of random stories you get quizzed on, Handicap temple, where you have to complete the same room over and over but this time u cant jump or dash and Resident Evil 2 Mansion with the fixed camera angles where less than favorable in my opinion.
Graphics 8/10
Graphics where fantastic, the graphical quality of the cut scenes was phenomenal and for the most part I very much enjoyed the beautiful eye candy that was each individual environment in the game.
Take this with a grain of salt as I only ended up playing through Neir's Character ark before I decided to leave the game. Maybe it improves with Kainé's ark but I simply don't know.
Overall my experience was a solid 5/10 was really expecting more from a Nier game that was $60 but that's just my opinion.
I would highly recommend waiting for this to go on steam sale before you get it
The age of Replicant shows, especially when compared to Automata. That really is the only complaint I have.
In typical Yoko Taro fashion the world and story are revealed in layers, each pass through part 2 is a little different and if you aren't paying attention you will miss something. It is so very subtle, but it doesn't take long to start questioning who is good and who is evil...and the answer is just as complex as it is in real life.
Except for ending E, you are only ever in control of Brother NieR, while dialog and cut scenes will appear for the member of the party whose story you are playing.
Speaking of ending E, make sure you get 10 good looks at her secret as this is the only chance to do so.
As a hack-n-slash-n-cast action game this is decent, but you are either playing this because it came recommended or because you played Automata and want more context.
I can't call this an RPG. A core part of being an RPG is player choices shaping the PC & the world, like in the Pathfinder games, The Witcher, or even Skyrim. The choices here...I'll let you play and leave that for you to discover.
This game is a hair pulling, alright time. Oh you played Automata and want to get to get to know Yoko Taro a little better? Well, get ready for a slog of a time. Multiple endings? That's absolute BS and please make it stop I don't want to fish any more. The fish, they are screaming, I don't want to be here. Oh gosh! Why am I fishing? I don't want to look up a guide but it's so terrible. Oh, the old factory music makes me want to tear my skin off. How long have I been trapped here? I don't even know how long ago I played as young Nier. I hate you Popola and Devola. Kaine is mean and bulge and magic and swish, swish, stab.
Yeah it was an aight time with an alright story and good characters. Play only if you're dedicated to these kinds of games and have a high tolerance and patience.
Unique gameplay and story. Unforgettable characters. Nice graphics. A story about the lengths a brother would do to save his sister. Nier is a must play for jrpg players. Playing this is totally worth it. :)
Great story. I was told that I should play this before Neir Automata and supposedly that one is better than this. This one is amazing so I am really looking forward to that
Nier Replicant and Automata have the best story you can find in any video game. For gaming, it doesn't get any better than these 2 games, this is the peak, it only goes downhill from here. Unless Yoko Taro gets enough money to incentivize him to make a 3rd nier game.
Good story, Great soundtrack and amazing characters. I really couldnt stop myself from finishing the game from start to end and get every ending, admittedly it is not perfect, the way the story is laid out and the constant backtracking to get every ending is exhausting to say the least, but I personally found it to be worthwhile.
I can respect that they mostly stuck to the original Nier game despite its flaws. At the same time they worked to improve on some of the elements of the game that the players complained about. However, even the flaws in the gameplay give it a sort of charm and the experience does leave you wanting more.
I played this after Nier:Automata and of course because of that I cant help compare the two, admittedly Nier:Automata did a better job of telling the story, it kept the players attention and even though there was backtracking in the game aswell, it wasnt exhausting and retained most players attention to the lore. The criticism of the backtracking here is fair, but if you can get over that and play the game patiently from start to end I can guarantee you'll have a great experience.
Overall, I give it a 8/10.
I was not expecting that kind of ending. If you want to enjoy an escalating story with fucked up twists. This is the game for you. Loved it
Story - 9/10
Mechanics - 7/10
Gameplay - 7/10
Entertainment - 17/20
Overall - 8.0/10
Comments: A lot of backtracking and repetition which unfortunately disrupts the flow of the game. However, the story really shines when it wants to.
Overall awesome game, finally got me into the Yoko Taro verse of Drakengard series (which I hope gets a remake as well). Gameplay is very fun, and somewhat of a hot take, I liked it more than Automata's due to various styles of magic and thinking of creative ways to defeat them. The game in normal mode (never tried hard) is a LOT easier than Automata though, though due to loose connections between the games and the 7 year gap makes it seem like an entirely different game. Story wise, the narrative is peak Yoko Taro and never once felt bored of it. Side quests aren't all that much, but if you really love the game go ahead and play like I did. I'm just glad a niche cult hit is now getting more recognition and getting more talked about in the fandom because it is after all one of the best remakes to a game, did it justice in every possible way. Hope everyone that reads this enjoys the game as much as I did!
This game told everybody on my friend's list that I was trying to 'Save Underwear Girl' and now they know I like buying used underwear.
Great game, very tedious with quests that go back and forth between places just to be sent back, but hey the story, gameplay, music, and characters certainly make this a worthy game to play and lose yourself into. I played Nier;Automata first so coming to this really has me seeing all sorts of references from this game to Automata.
This is an excellent video game. This is an upgraded version of the original NieR back in 2010, but specifically the Japanese version known as NieR Replicant, in America we got NieR Gestalt. Both versions are like 99% the same. The only difference is that in the American NieR, Square Enix thought for some reason to make the character an older man who is a father saving his daughter, whereas in Replicant, the protagonist is younger and is a brother saving his sister. Replicant is the canon story, so they chose that version for this remaster. I finished all 5 endings (A, B, C, D, E) and this is one of the best stories I've ever seen in a video game ever. It's a very unique experience and I won't say anything here because the best way to play is completely blind. The only thing I will say is that I STRONGLY recommend doing all 5 endings for the best and most complete story. The soundtrack is also one of the best, if not then the best, I've ever listened to in a video game. The gameplay is really fun but nothing too crazy, it's a fun time. Overall this is one of the best games I've ever played in my life.
This game is overall really well made, there are a few really awkward moments in writing but the story is really good. the characters a memorable and the plot def. keeps you on your toes. The side quests have decent story to them but the back and forth nature of them makes them less enjoyable, the combat gets a bit too easy once you get high enough , i recomend playing the ending a few times to get them all because the full story is worth it. overall 8.1/10
For the love of god please play this game blind. I just did and I don't have the words to express just how amazing this game was. Play through ending E, just do it. I can't express how much I think everyone should play this game.
If you are a single-mode player, love incredible music and like to find secrets:
this game is for you
absolute emotional rollercoaster
Story is 10 out of 10 with no doubt, soundtracks are also absolutely 10 out of 10. I actually didn't want to say this game is S Tier worthy, because it has some flaws to it. But ever since I shed some tears for three times during my playthroughs I may have to revise that thought. At least concering the story.
BUT as I said, it comes with some flaws: for non-lovers of the NieR-series I would rank this game lower, because as good as the main quests are on one hand, side quests on the other hand are absolutely boring and uncreative. Also farming materials for weapon upgrades is absolute pain.
All in all just skip most of the side quests and buy the strongest weapon "Phoenix Spear" as soon as you can so you can miss on trying to upgrade your weapons. Rest of the game is a masterpiece.
Final, important note if you consider buying NieR Replicant: The story contains multiple endings that can only be unlocked through multiple playthroughs. I recommend you play it at least twice to unlock new cutscenes in the 2nd playthrough that are in my opinion essential for the main understanding of this game. No worries, you just have to replay a part of the game after your first completion.
This game is so much fun so far the story in this game is so good same with the fights ive been so into the story that 3hr went by before i knew it it was worth the money
Very good story. Combat is also a bit more fulfilling in this title than in Automata imo. Highly Recommend.
This game is so incredible!!!! Im gonna wait for drakegrad remastered
The story is unique and interesting. the gameplay and mechanics are incredible and it feels smooth.
Just sitting in front of Devola... Money well spent.
yoko taro good director/writer
A good story concept, backed with a great lore (patch works from over decades of work turning into one interesting huge lore background), but totally ruined by bad story telling and boring repetitive game play. If you are a completionist, be prepared for a long torture of filler filled game play just to get a few interesting story going.
For those who played Automata before playing any of the Nier series, this one here is exactly the same story pattern of Automata, simply replace Androids with bio-engineered human replicants (from the 1982 movie "Blade Runner") and replace machines with gestalt human. So the whole Automata is just a repeating "history" of replicant with different actors. But it totally lacks the good story telling Automata has and ended up with filler quests and force the player to repeat exactly the same game play over and over again just to update a few bits of information into the multiple endings... and it gets boring real fast. To be honest, the 1967 Short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" did a way better job at telling about Gestalt minds, and it's clear that the game writer copied a bunch of its ideas directly into Nier series...
Now that i've 100% it, i can safely conclude that i do not enjoy this game most of the time and it drives me to sleep a few time while playing it... only recommend to people with insomnia... it really helps put you to sleep. If you are only interested in the story.. i don't really recommend playing the game, go get the books or watch it somewhere on youtube to save you the frustration and torture. The game never did tell you the full story anyway even when you 100% it, you will still need the books to get all the story patched up.
I will bleach my a$$hole for Kainé. She can do unspeakable things to me... anything bro.
Played this after Automata, and honestly found the combat and story to be a little underwhelming at first. I was mainly just motivated for lore reasons and not really because I found the characters all that moving. I powered through it though, and eventually came to love it. Endings C, D and (especially) E were the parts that made it all worth it for me.
This game is incredible, It's like if you played a Zelda game but your reward for beating it is emotional damage. The characters are so well written and voice acted too i will never forget them.
I'll rip out your goddamn eyes and piss in the sockets!
Hussy
great game but the sequel is better
was half of my first evening with the game to get controller to work on the game
played it with no mods and it was a blast
didnt looking into any of the mods tho and was told that they do a lot of good QOL inprovements
Good game, would look up Kaine's skirt again
I do recommend this game, however there is 1 important thing to note. Don't replay the game to get endings B, C, D, E. Ending system works different than in Automata, which got me totally confused. Gameplay in paths B, C/D is the same as in the first playthrough. There are new, story important cutscenes that are maybe up to 2 hours in total + ending E with about 40 minutes of gameplay. Imho, ~3hrs of fresh content, are far from worth it. All the fresh cutscenes could easily be included in the game and the whole multiple ending gimmick would be gone. Also weapon hoarding requirement is pain. Nevertheless, story, locations, costumes, soundtrack are all great! Just don't go for NG+, watch the new content on yt instead, and forget weapon hoarding requirement.
25+ hours of Yoko Taro laughing at my depression.
Oh and Kaine was there.
”Move... Move... Come on, you stupid arm, move! We are incomplete. But our friends make us whole! We are mocked, abused, and hated. But our friends keep us strong! That is what keeps us going! Do not stand in the way of our lives!”
NieR Replicant… Oh yes! Keep em coming! Another console-exclusive JRPG finally made its way to Steam. And after I was blown away by the phenomenal game that is NieR Automata, I just had to try this one out! Plus, the new remaster lets you play as the brother of Yonah, unlike its counterpart NieR Gestalt, where you play as the father. After playing for a few hours, I must say, It looks incredible! Not only that, but the story also checks out. I am once again blown away by the series.
Now, about the game
In a nutshell, the reasons I'm particularly fond of NieR Replicant are these:
• Colorful cast of characters, with the addition of excellent individual growth
• Beautiful, new and improved visual compared to the original PS3 release
• Superb gameplay that kept me hooked for hours
• Heart-wrenching story, with excellent buildup
• The soundtrack is out of this world
An ashen-colored world, devoid of life
A little fun fact before the actual review; the event in NieR Replicant is the direct result of an ending from an even older console game called Drakengard, which Yoko Taro also directed. It makes you wonder about how extensive the series lore is. The story began with a young man struggling to stay awake in an abandoned convenience store when apparitions made of a mixture of yellow and black particles attacked him out of the blue. With the intruders defeated, he breathed a sigh of relief and ran to the other side of the aisle to ensure his sister, Yonah, was fine. Not long after their short reprieve, another wave of apparitions appeared, and luck wasn't on his side this time. During his struggle, he got hit to the point of nearly losing consciousness. At his wit's end, he decided to borrow the power of an ominous grimoire, which granted him power beyond belief and allowed him to turn the table on this seemingly endless swarm of apparitions.
However, fate can be cruel. What awaited him after his fight was the epitome of despair and hopelessness. Not knowing what to do, the young man cried out, but no one was left to help him. Then the scenery zooms out to show you what's left of this desolate earth, a world blanketed by ash and ruin for as far as the eye can see.
Time progressed a thousand years into the future. What was once a cold and bleak ruin was replaced by warm, lush green scenery. And the two youngsters who battled for their lives now reside in a strange, tranquil village. However, Yonah's illness persisted, motivating you to start looking for an elusive cure.
What I love about the intro is how it perfectly depicts the MC's feeling of hopelessness, and the abrupt switch to a world filled with warmth adds more mystery components to the story – mad props to the devs. Furthermore, the game features excellent character development and epic soundtracks, which I can confidently say are also one of the main selling points of this NieR Replicant.
However, As much as I love to keep singing songs of praise for NieR Replicant's story, there are times when progression feels repetitious. The game has five endings; each one unravels a mystery regarding the hidden truth of their world and how tragic it can be. Along the way, you'll also learn the backstories of your party members. Here's the kicker, if you want to play the additional content, you'll have to clear the original four endings first. Well, the good news is after your first clear, you don't have to start all the way from the prologue; the bad news is certain routes have no additional content aside from the different endings. So yeah, bummer.

Despite its flaws, the sidequests have some of the most lovely stories
I'm not going to lie; the sidequests in NieR Replicant are incredibly tedious to do. Most of them involve running around looking for a specific material or forcing you to go from one end to another end of the map. And just like many other JRPG protags, this one also loves meddling with other people's affairs. But that's not the issue! My main gripe with these quests is how hard it was to find some of the required materials. There was this one time when I needed to find an eagle egg for an old lady in the shopping district, so I went to the specified place mentioned in the quests; after multiple sweeps through the map for an hour, I still couldn't find it. I decided to check on the wiki to see where it drops; as it turns out, you can only find it from one specific gathering point that I didn't know existed! I shifted my focus on that one specific point, and after another round of back and forth (around two hours), I finally got it. Spoiler alert! You need five eagle eggs to reach 100% completion, good luck.
Even so, there are some reasons why I couldn't help myself from completing these quests. While some are the standard "get me that and be done with it," others hint at the strange accidents happening worldwide or simply a heartwarming story. And completing these quests made me realize that, despite the recent horrors, there are still people going about their everyday lives. Take The Promised Gift quest line, for example, where you'll be treated to an ordinary meal by a lovely couple upon completion. And as you progress through the story, you'll notice that "ordinary" is a concept that has been missing for quite some time. That's why I couldn't help but smile or weep as I watched those scenes every time there was a quest with that kind of story.

Solid gameplay with some minor speedbumps
NieR Replicant has three difficulty levels, and I strongly suggest you avoid playing the game on easy because that mode is a no-brainer. I'm serious – you literally only need to press one button to win. After a few trials and errors, I find that playing the game on hard mode allows you to fully utilize all available tools and resources. Plus, the battle mechanic is solid, well, almost. The targeting system, that part is a bit clunky, and parry that still leaves you vulnerable to hit, which is a problem when facing mobs – stick to dodging; it's safer. Everything else is a-okay.
The other thing I love about the gameplay is that each boss you beat directly impacts the game overworld, which implies a more profound meaning – and it is mind-blowing!

Overall
NieR Replicant is definitely a solid A for me. And it's one of the greatest remasters I've seen in a long time. Sure, the game has some flaws, but the developer compensates with first-rate story writing, improved gameplay, and epic OST that both new and old fans will appreciate. If you're unfamiliar with the NieR series or searching for an excellent JRPG, this is a must-try.
While the gameplay and graphics sure could be better compared to today's standards, the remaster did an amazing job compared to the OG one. For both versions, the game is still awesome. And the lore simply is incredibly beautiful yet tragic. Hits right in the feels. A very fair amount of side quests are also very well made. The soundtrack is just as beautiful and fits the game perfectly. 11/10 would recommend to everyone who has time to play games (since this one has a lot of content).
I love this game. I would play it again and again happily and I did more than I needed to. I will play this game again in the future. Perhaps I'll play the original Later on! This game is a beautiful piece of art!
The saddest game that I have ever played, but one that I am grateful to have experienced. NieR Replicant is one of those games that, as you play, transcends the medium of video games and becomes something more. This is a game that wants to have a discussion with the player. Not the playable character, but YOU as the person playing the game. The story is a tragedy that had me in tears so many times I lost count. One moment specifically in the second playthrough RUINED me. I don’t know what else to say about this game that hasn’t been said and i suck at writing. So if you like tragic and dark stories and JRPGs, play this game.
Love the vibe, not as good as Automata, but I personally would still play this over most modern games.
Shit is on another level 10/10 Writing, Plot and gameplay
nah fr that game is a must play. Its so unique. The Story progression. The Characters. Everything makes sense. Every Quest every action you take makes sense. The loading screens are so lovely. The Dialogues are so well made. And that 5 Year time skip, everything is so good. You can see that the creator has put his whole Heart and Soul in the Game. I got the game on sale but its worth the full price. Play it you wont regret.
Also the soundtracks, 10/10 easy
Gameplay is repetitive when dealing with the various endings, but the story makes up for it.
You must see the ending E!!
this game have a great soundtrack, character design, and of course great story, but to much grinding for 100% achievements I think....
great story and soundtrack.
this game is a full improvement from the game it has been remade off.
gameplay is similar to nier automata, which is probably why you're are.
most of the side quests are a fetch quest. however there some that add to the story and give a charm to characters.
overall i highly recommend it
This game is beautiful, i wont spoil anything major in the game but just make sure to enjoy, its a good story and the symbolism behind it is even more powerful.
Much like NieR: Automata, NieR: Replicant is a masterpiece. I can't recommend it enough.
JRPG side quest simulator, with amazing music. The battle is also very difficult when you have tears in your eyes.
and, ah, it's time to harvest the flower again...
the characters need therapy and now so do i - 11/10
Played this game after completing Nier: Automata. So, can recommend Replicant for fans.
What is good:
Cool main story, characters and fights.
I like different game play approaches in some places.
What is bad:
Side quests are not fun and simple.
All routes are pretty much the same except one, so the game could be shorter.
Locations are empty.
The most boring and tedious speedrun simulator with a clunky combat system in comparison with Automata, but at least Kaine's made my PP got hard so 10/10, thanks Yoko Taro.
That Yoko Taro sure can make a video game.
Very good game. Grinding was hell, though.
Nier replicant is really a masterpiece of a game . I played through all of the endings and still wanted more of it . Highly recommend this game to newcomer of this series and old fans of nier automata as this game took place before automata
Gameplay
The gameplay for this game is actually pretty fluid and fast pace . The combat is very similar with nier automata combat but more simple then automata . I still prefer the combat style in automata than replicant because of the lack of combo i can do with just a single weapon . Automata combat is more stylist and replicant is more simple .
Plot
The story of replicant is one of the strongest points of this game . Im really enjoying the way they tell the story and give more information as i played through all of the ending . And i highly recommend play through all of the ending as it will give you more information and more context . As for the ending all of them is really well written and enjoyed all of them .
Music/Soundtrack
10/10 the music in this game is something else if you have played nier automata you could already know that the soundtrack is going to be a banger .
Side mission
The side mission in this game is just like any other game they will ask you to go fetch stuft for them . But some of the side mission really deserved your time as it gives some extra side story to the world of replicant such as old lady at the lighthouse and many more .
In the end i really recommend this game to anyone . Im really glad they decided the remaster this game and hopefully they olso decide to remaster the old drakengard series in the future .
Pretty cool story, tone and main cast of characters
Music is top notch and arguably stronger than Automata's
The sub plots across each region are tear-jerkers
As much as they improved the gameplay it's still pretty awful. Play on easy or normal and enjoy the ride. You gain nothing from hard mode and it's not even worth testing your skills; it's just a damage sponge simulator and does not respect your time.
I've played through the second half of the game three times now, I'm going insane.
beautiful graphics it makes my eyes watery , soundtrack so good it'll make you addicted, the storyline is great with many details, this is the best prequel to play after Nier:Automata . I recommend this game to any one who likes RPG games as well as storylined up games with elements of decision making. Definitely a 10 for me : )
I'd give this game a neutral rating if I could. The main problem is that you have to replay things too many times, a lot more than you had in automato. The core of the game is good I've enjoyed it, but playing after ending A you gonna have to replay quite a lot and you get some extra information in return. And I mean it still helps you understand the story more which is pretty good and ending E was solid, but still at the end I felt like I had to repeat too much for too little reward. You might want to consider just getting ending A and watching the rest on youtube.
this game breaks my heart with how uninteresting the story is. i understand it came before automata, but games just weren't so boring back then. the gameplay aspects are solid but i couldn't keep playing due to the story being so uninteresting. 6/10
Watched gameplay of all the endings first and now playing it myself, def a 1000/10 in pair with Automata.
One of the best games ever created, highly recommended
Grimoire Weiss is so based. I wish books were real.
Kaine chrushing me with a lot of punchs by a pervert archivement, is great
A game which is just objectively clunkier, more tedious, less packed with robots than Automata but still manages to be supremely kino, extremely comfy and tells a fantastic story. There are many quests that revolve around just going from A to B to A to B to A again, and whilst the game acknowledges this, bad thing bad on purpose doesn't make it good. No copium, the game still fucks though. If Automata is a 10, this is like an 8-9 depending how much you mind the design of the quests.
On a side note, if you're playing on ultrawide like I did get ready to work for a bit to get it working properly, but after 1 hexedit, 1 installation of special K, some configuring of the settings and downloading an outdated version of the game.exe, the game will run ultrawide with no black bars @ whatever FPS you can push.
One of the best 3rd Person, Open world, Action Adventure, , hack and slash, bullet hell, hacking, open world brawlers, with RPG elements.
Great Action RPG with fantastic music.
Yoko Taro can run me over and I'd apologize
ending 1 finished, i am broken emotionally. fantastic writing and the combat isnt BAD its just BLAND, also the story is more than meaty enough to give you something to mull over between characters chatting, which always feels natural.
loved this
combat 9/10
story 9/10
gameplay 6/10 lite irritating with all the back and forth jobs you did but this is only the side jobs not then main story the main story was 9/10
fishing 10/10
charaters 10/10
bosses 10/10
The best story and music i have ever seen in a video game. The combat is really fun and the world is amazing. This game is the most interested i have ever been playing a game in my life and i wish i could replay the game again from the start. The side quests in this game are also amazing, most of them are fetch quests but the story in them are really good. The aesthetic of this game is super interesting also and every ending and play through is more interesting than the last and it blew me away how good this game is by the end. This game really took me by surprise even though i already came into the game expecting a really good story and characters. This is a 10/10 game for me and it will probably always be my favourite game.
Nice Animation ,Awesome Musics ,Good Character design and story + SHIT GAME PLAY.
The In-game mechanics is terrible especially is quest design(including main quest), transition between map is bad ,most of the time you have to walk to the destination.
Last, I want to say ,35++ hours that will be minimum time to reach the final endings ,4 time of repeating playing the same story.
Almost a masterpiece, but the combat is only fun if the game is on hard difficulty and don't expect to know the story without doing all the 5 endings. The only bad part about finishing the game is not having any new Kainé scenes, I really miss her fashion sense.
This game seems to take a while to warm up I'm 10 hours in and still not really feeling the magic yet.
I've got faith though!
Kaine is just sooooo cool. I wish she would beat me up and spit on me like omg. Also I want to ruin Weiss's pages, if you catch my drift, if you are picking up what im putting down ;)
i was conflicted as to whether i would thumbs up this game or not for a good while, but eventually i decided to thumbs *down* it, only because i *personally* didn't really like it.
TECHNICALLY speaking, the game itself is pretty good! i don't have anything against the gameplay, the fighting mechanics etc. everything that makes the game from the technical sense, is good, but... again, this is my personal taste, it could very well differ for probably everyone else.
while it's true you don't need any previous knowledge of the lore itself to enjoy these games, but for me, it's just with the way my brain works i guess, if i don't understand the "what" and "why" of what is in front of me, it takes a good chunck of my enjoyment of anything!
so playing the game itself i didn't really have much against it, in fact i was enjoying it (otherwise i wouldn't bother going for 100%ing the achievements), but when i finished it, and THEN looked more into the lore because i still didn't understand anything yet, after that i realized i don't really like this game, nor the series in general anymore....
that's not to say i HATE them, it's just the fact i needed to look up many things, and STILL need more research because there's just so much i don't understand (whether there IS explanations for my questions or not is another deal) it considerably lessened my liking and appreciation for it all.
that's all.
of course if you don't care about the overall comprehension of the world when you consume your media, you won't care at all for my complaints, so do give it a try for yourself.
Simple Wished i Knew about this game sooner, loved the gameplay, charaters, music and story.
i felt a real connection to the charaters their woes hit me as hard, i dont normal do muitl endings but this game i had to do them all and it was the best use of my time, fully worth it.
10 out of 10 just simply buy it and play it. it speaks for itself.
The full and best version of this tear-jerking masterpiece. Kaine best character.
My top game of 2022 so far. I only picked it up a year after its release so I am late to the party but I can honestly say its the best single player experience I have had in a while. If you liked Nier: Automata, this is a must buy. If you like amazing soundtracks and impactful storylines, again this is a must buy. Well worth the price of admission and one I can wholeheartedly recommend.
Weirdest story ever but also very sad, uuhh 8/10
If you liked Nier:Automata (or otherwise JRPG*s) you will probably like this one. Not the Happiest game (got some serious topics), but playing is fun mainly and the world feels very unique.
Anime but game style. Very good game. Play.
Great story and music, but side quests are quite boring. The combat is easy to understand. 4/5 for me.
A must have for music and story telling. All action RPG fans will love this game. The combat depth is arguably mediocre but doesn't hinder the game at all. I enjoy the Shoot-em up side scroller elements of the game. Voice acting is top notch. I played the original US Release of NIER on PS3 and was so happy to pick this up all these years later and hear the beautiful soundtrack again, all the good memories come flooding back. This "re-make" "re-release" whatever you want to call it is faithful to the original game and even more enjoyable with updated graphics. 10/10 Do recommend.
Definitely a must-play. Soundtrack in particular is just stunning. Only major critique I can give is that bosses definitely are way too weak and should definitely be way harder.
I actually enjoy this game much more than Nier Automata. The gameplay both in and out of combat is much more expansive and in depth thus making it much more fun. Just like Nier Automata this game has well developed characters and a well written story. The major contrast between this game and Nier Automata is that this game is in a fantasy setting while Nier Automata is in a post apocalyptic sci-fi setting. Nier Automata is a decent game but this game much better and much more fun
One of the best games I've ever played. Fantastic story, amazing visuals, and cool characters tied together in multiple ways. Excited for automata
This game is a masterpiece. Absolutely amazing story, very emotional and beautiful. But patience is required to see all the benefits of this digital Universe. 5 endings, A, B, C, D, E are worth to check all of them. Yoko Taro is a Genius. Respect and thanks for dozens of hours of strong emotions, sadness, hope and almost tears. Characters are very easy to fall in love with, their destiny is interesting to observe and live through. Love and death, loyalty and pain to handle just for surviving and kicking, there are so many existential topics that are touched and that are being thought through during a gameplay. Intricate experience and probably unforgettable. English voice acting, it is a pleasure for ears. Good God, voice of grown Yonah is like from Heaven, so much beautiful, ideal. I am not English native speaker, but beauty of this game voice acting is one more proof that studying English was worth all the efforts.
This game gave me depression. But brilliant music and story, plus brilliant dialogue with the book and the hussy.
9/10 there was a song at the end
EMIL IS SO CUETJHAGAKJLHAJKHAKJSKJHAKJHAJK
enjoying it, looks amazing and runs extremely well! unfortunately the back tracking to the same areas half a dozen times and farming for hours on end to find something is just simply rubbish. 7/10

Just finished ending A. Hearing about ending B from other players makes me wonder. How am I gonna survive the brutal blood-gorging life-ending soul-stealing infernal catastrophic unholy draconic permanent defilement of my mind and a** that is the rest of the game's endings?
good game so far c:
This update significantly improves the presentation and voice acting of Nier, and it makes it feel like it's very similar to Nier Automata. Aside from these, the combat also gets a lot of love, and it adds a lot of texture to the world.
Great game and story. I just don't want to play the second part 4 times...
really enjoying this game! Some of the music reminds me of the Tales series. Loving the vibe, the art style, and the story.
My only qualm is the fact that basically all female characters have their ass, tits, and panties showing. Like sure, im all for it if that what other wants. but could we have a clothing option at the beginning of the game? Like, at some point it is purely pandering for a male audience and Its super awkward.
Edit: ok, so there is a free dlc pack with different outfits. Only one seems to cover Keina properly, but its a shame her eyes are covered. : /
I knew a lot of NieR Replicant's story and lore going in despite Automata being my first Nier game. That didn't detract from the story at all though. It was still entirely engaging, heartwrenching, and beautiful.
The combat is different from Automata's but it works just as well and feels great too. The only complaint I have is the amount of sidequests but hey, it's a JRPG, it's expected. Some of the sidequests did add to the lore and story though, so it's not all a meaningless grind.
If you're unfamiliar with Nier, This would be a great first title to get into.
A good game despite annoyances.
First I am torn between which game to recommend playing first. This one or Automata. Playing this game will spoil a major plot point in Automata and the other way around if you actually read the notes and things you can find plus knowing the characters in the game. The stories are separated by a time gap but are linked. Minor spoiler Emil, Devola, and Popola are present in both games. If you play Automata first, two major plot point will be revealed before they happen in Replicant. I guess I would have to say play Replicant first since both games kind of spoil plot points for the other.
Keep in mind this is a remake so even though it is newer than Automata, it is not as polished. It also has content the original did not. The game still looks good but like the original it is substandard for its release time. It is entertaining and not too difficult. The "hard" difficulty is basically just over inflated health and strength of enemies.
This game has a few minor annoyances you just have to get past to be able to enjoy them. I will say that one of the main characters in this game made it almost to the point I wanted to play without sound. Aside of a few quips, he is the most annoying character across both games.
There is a lot of back and forth is this game. Go talk to this person, run across the map to do something trivial, then run all the way back. This wouldn't be all that bad if not for the unnecessary loading screens. What makes this worse isn't always a loading screen such as a small cut scene when walking through many doors. For instance, there is a section of the game where you are tasked with some puzzles to advance rooms. Each and every door you walk through it plays a video of the door open, close, magic barrier sequence. Then plays the reverse sequence after the barrier is down. What makes it worse yet is you come back to this area several times and have to go through that each time. I know it is trivial but I feel the sequence adds nothing to the game.
Something trial and I will add a spoiler tag but it isn’t a story spoiler. After defeating a boss, there is a finishing attack cut scene with a powerful move that annihilates the enemy. Why bother with the fight in the first place if he can just destroy the enemy this way? I get it... Some people will try and explain the value of it as if you don’t understand it. A common one is “it had to be weakened first”.
If you are a completionist who likes to earn achievements, be aware some of them can’t be completed if you watch the cut scenes that happen mid battle. The timer is still running while the scene plays and some of them are almost as long as the time limit itself. Also be aware that there are points of no return in the game. Quests will become unable to be completed when you move past a certain point of the game. Mainly moving from part one to part two.
One of the things I liked about Automata was the chapter select option after you completed the main playthoughs. You could go back and get things you missed without having to play the whole game again.
Despite the minor annoyances I would still recommend the game.
Beautiful story, beautiful gameplay and beautiful endingS. Story is very frustrating when you know what repercussions Niers' actions have.
One of the most beautiful games Ive ever played
Prepare to cry all over again......
This is not a souls like, do not expect one. This is an action JRPG, expect to grind, expect to rush through repeat play throughs, and expect to see a lot of cheeky antics. Will this game light a fire under you? Can't say, but if you meet it half way, you will enjoy your experience. Come devoid of expectations unless you played the drakengaard series.
Protect Yonah at all cost.
(PS: Play the series in order, save Automata for later and play Replicant first.)
It's decent, but not worth 5 playthroughs, just to see all the endings.
Story draws you in, artful aesthetic, great music, cinematic sequences and lots of action
Story makes you cry, music doubles the tears.
Picked this up, after Nier: Automata, didn't get into it for a few hours, but when I finally started a new game and embraced everything it has to offer, it's a really good one!
Just be aware, there are a few novel segments that are kinda long. Means reading, a lot of reading.
Also, you cannot skip the credits and they will be displayed a lot of times.
WARNING! STEAM WILL IGNORE YOU WHEN YOU ASK FOR A REFUND OR EVEN HELP WITH GETTING THIS GAME TO OPERATE PROPERLY!
I want to like this game but I can't even get my controls to operate as they were intended to. You cannot play with mouse, only keyboard (and only psychopaths use exclusively keyboard), so of course I tried using my Xbox controller. I'm not sure who programmed this trash but when you finally load in to where you can "control" your character the game acts like you're holding the block button the whole time. You will also find that NONE of your buttons are mapped correctly (my Start button was mapped to R3 of all things...) and half of the buttons are completely unmappable (LT, LB, RT, and RB cannot be interchanged with ANY of the other buttons). Of course I tried remapping what I could and I tried changing every setting available, and restarting my game, computer and controller in every possible combination. Nothing worked. I searched the internet for answers and found nothing that helped me fix it. Square Enix's own support website didn't even have an option for help with this title!
After 42 minutes of in-game tinkering (and another 20 out of the game), I decided I don't want to play this game badly enough to waste any more time fixing what should have been required to work before the game was even released. I put in a refund request with my play time well under one hour total. Steam won't issue a refund because I bought the game over two weeks prior to all of this, even though their verbiage states that I still qualify for a refund with fewer than two hours of play time (see the word "OR" in their automated denial response).
If you buy this game, make sure to download and boot it up right away to see if it works properly. If it doesn't, put in a refund request immediately because otherwise Steam will basically tell you to GFYS.
A pretty good game with good game play, voice acting, animation and soundtrack. All around pretty neat.
I will say though, it is a bit grindy at points. If you want to finish all the side quests or upgrade all the weapons, you'll need to farm your butt off.
Oh and as a spoiler free hint, keep playing after you finish it. It is once of those games you have to keep playing to get all the endings.
Really enjoyed my time with this game. The music was absolutely phenomenal although I slightly prefer the feel of the some of the tracks in the original Nier. The story was really well executed and felt kind of like playing a fairy tale for lack of better words. While the combat was not quite as smooth as Automata (not many games can stack up to Platinum for this genre), it still felt pretty good, especially when the weapon switching mechanic is unlocked. The world was just large enough to give a good sense of scale without feeling empty. My biggest complaints are the invisible walls in a lot of places, particularly the village area, as well as the redundant gameplay required to achieve endings C-E.
game was fun but somewhat disappointing in the story a bit
This game was not ONE of the best games I have ever played. It IS the best game I've ever played.
The sound design in this game is some of the best in any game I have ever played.
The gameplay is enjoyable and fluid. My attacks really feel like they have weight to them.
The story was a heart-warming tale of a boy who wants to save his sister from a fate she didn't deserve and finds unlikely allies/ friends.
All of the bosses are unique and fun in their own way even though each boss always has a charge attack most of the rest of their attacks are different.
True to a Nier game, you don't get the whole experience from just one playthrough. If you beat the game the first time, you will be given a prompt to save the game, and then if you proceed to open that save you will go back to an earlier part of the game where some things will be different. ( I can't say what is different because of spoilers)

An amazing game with an enthralling story line and great writing.
i paid 45$ for this shit The reason why I finished the game and did all the ending becuase i can`t refund it.
everything in this game is average not worth the 45$ for a 2010 game and whats making me sad is that everyone giving the game a posittive review- weebs- they only want to look it kaines butt.
go buy kingdom hearts its the same story but better.
it was better when you got to play as the dad
Absolutely amazing game. 10/10. This game warmed my heart and broke it at the same time. Loveable cast and amazing progression in the story. Anyone who says this game is bad is wrong. Just make sure to take your time and pace yourself properly rather than blitzing the story; thankfully everything but one sequence in this game is voice acted so you'll get enjoyment from it all. I don't know if it's the drinks in me but holy shit the voice actors are amazing.
Great game, didn't really bother looking into the whole soundtrack being "automatified" stuff since I didn't really hear the "difference" people were talking about in the other reviews, although that could also be something to do with the option to set the game's soundtrack to Automata's, but then if that's the main issue I'll just ignore those comments lol.
There's something of a downgrade when it comes to the combat, since in the original game there were different heavy attacks for most of the weapons, but if by losing that we get a better overall combat, since now it's way easier to link magic with regular attacks, then I'm cool with it.
The biggest reason I can recommend this review is because the game finally has a conclusion (as in the story), and that fifth ending is also great, fucking made me cry like a bitch.
I can't recommend going for the 100% because fucking Yoko Taro approved of an RNG system that NEVER drops the item you want, like, "oh, do you want a uncommon grade item that drops from that bitch of an enemy that roams around in packs of 100? Too bad man, we'll instead give you 50 rare grade items", WHY?
I didn't get to experience the Yorha DLC because I only remembered it existing in ending D, and just then I realised: "Why the fuck do I have to add a free item to my account if the thing is already free to begin with?".
Overall rating? Beat the game 5 times, it's great, I fucking love it.
Oh and the final message that's displayed in the options menu when you finish ending E, man, my eyes started sweating.
it's like nier automata, but worse
A beautiful game that has an amazing story attached to it, I would highly recommend NieR to anyone.
The most depressing part is that you have to go through the entire Act II for at least 3 times to know the truth, but still this is a good game with a deep story plot. So Drakengard remastered/rebooted/reworked when? This game feels like there are still something that is not introduced.
A downgrade from the original in every way except the music.
The voice acting was HORRIBLE, didn't seem like any of the actors really cared or tried. The poor voice acting completely killed any hope of immersion.
Very disappointing.
It's great that this game got remade and ported into PC but it really does have its very dated elements. It's a great game and I had fun with it for a good amount of hours but at some point, I really only kept playing for the story. It's tedious and I really only recommend this if you have the patience to play through the same 2nd segment of the game AT LEAST 3 times. Also it says 27 hours but I played offline a lot so I actually played around 34-37 hours.
Pros:
-Nice cast
-Great soundtrack
-Great story
-Anyone can beat it. Difficulty is out of the question for this one
-Can be light-hearted when it needs to be but isn't 100% edge when it's serious
-Character design so weird you grow to love em
-Not very heavy on your system
-Cool looking abilities
-Unique camera and story segments
Cons:
-Ok combat. There really isn't much complexity in this one. For a game where you fight if not running around, the combat can get p boring. You can win simply by spamming. No enemy in the game makes you rethink your strategy aside from maybe getting a bit more defensive. Dark Wall trivializes the whole game too.
-Bland world. Something about the game's graphics seems off. I'm not obsessed with good graphics but I think the whole world is somehow stuck on a luminosity that's a bit too high while also being undersaturated. It makes everything look dead and highlights the dated graphics of the game.
-Dogshit side quests (usually). I don't care if they're poking fun at typical RPG quests. They're still dogshit.
-Very tedious to get to Ending E
-Can't skip the credits
Overall, I more or less enjoyed the story but I feel as if Route B and Route C could've just been merged into one route. While it's a bit dated, I would've given it an 8.5/10 but due to how repetitive it got, I'll lower it to 7.5/10. Great game, get it on sale. Not worth full price imo.
I too like when my game is locked at 60 fps *not sarcastic*
Feels alot like a Zelda game with a Final Fantasy touch, very fun to play! ^^ It even has a legit Zelda reference in the desert.
A really solid game. I am glad that the creators did a remake because it was definitely worth it. It had a good story with additional lore being revealed the second time you play the game for the other endings. Combat is very fluid and really fast-paced. I usually enjoy hack and slash games. Honestly, you can spend run the whole game to get to the ending pretty quickly. I just enjoy doing all the side quests, which were very funny within this game. Hence, why it took so many hours to complete. Overall, I would recommend this game.
awful pc port still not properly patched. do not recommend

I've been playing this game for 45 hours, I can tell ya, besides you will cry, is THE BEST GAME EVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER.
It was FFXIV that ultimately got me to play this game plus the reccomendation of my Free Company but it was truly a great experience in the end. It's in that category of RPG that not only is great the first time but that you feel nostalgia for later on and thus the desire to replay every once in awhile. It's not just any game that can include that last part and it's how you know there's truly something special about it. That intangible greatness.
Every time I played it left me with feelings of melancholy
Runs way better than the first one... Don't even need to know if the game is good
After playing Nier Automata, I had to play this one :)
Hands down one of the best experiences I've had with a video game.
It may not be the best game out there, with a ton of repetition, mostly in the side quests, but the core game is an experience in of itself. The story is rich with melancholy and the characters are all interesting, having their own engaging motives. The twists were shocking, relenting. (Probably not the right use of that word)
To put it simply, this game filled me with so many emotions and brought back memories, where certain aspects of the game felt familiar to something I've experienced in the past, be it a Sonic game or a visual novel. I may be over exaggerating here, but this game really did hit me right in the motions and I couldn't be any more thankful for it.
Oh and that hack and slash combat is pretty smooth too.
I look forward to playing Automata, whenever I will get to that, but for now, I will cherish my time and memories that have been spent with this game. Thank you, Yoko Taro, Thank you, devs. Thank you, Square Enix. Thank you for an absolute masterpiece.
Without dragging time, this game is great
I really loved this game, so well done
LOVE. THIS. GAME. Played the Gestalt version on xbox 360, this one has everything the last one had and more, gestalt version had you playing as the father which made so emotional, but in this one your the brother, not sure what to expect but I have high hopes. Great characters, Amazing story, combat is your typical hack and slash but the magic system makes it cool as shit, lots of weapons to choose from, Incredibly sad moments that we all love, and mutliple endings so more play time, and best for last: the MUSIC, omg the music, i'dd recommend playing just to listen to it. All in all 9.5/10
cant stop listening 2 the shadowlord theme
Pretty good fishing simulator but idk what all the other stuff was
Decent game, too bad the game kept crashing on steam.
Is your time limited? Then skip this one if you're after the whole story in its entirety. I beat it once but could not stomach completing the game from the half-way point again to progress the multiple endings; the gameplay simply doesn't have that kind of depth to warrant that. It's an interesting concept however, but is implemented poorly here unlike NieR Automata, where you get another character to play as, among other changes that make the effort worth it and not feel like a slog. Not to mention certain side-quests which have no respect for the player's time, and the garden. That god awful "garden" mechanic. I left it a field of dead plants for Yonah to enjoy whenever she looks out the window from her bed.
There's a lot to say about world building however. There was clearly a lot of thought, effort and passion that went into this world and its cast of characters. In spite of all the despair and melancholy (or maybe because of it), the setting successfully captures your attention and gets you invested in the story. The music compliments this achievement through and through. While some songs are overused or get repetitive despite their various versions, damn near every other song captures the mood of the scene or setting with gusto.
It's therefore unfortunate that the aforementioned issues turn this game into a flawed gem in my eyes. Had the endings been handled better and the side-quests been less grind-oriented, then I would have recommended this title. Some might contend one ending ought to be enough to satisfy but, sadly, the real creative side of this story lies within the alternate endings.
All in all this game is essentially a stepping stone towards Automata, with many lessons learned and acted upon in good measure.
That moment when you realize Kaine is pronounced Kai-nay ...
If you like empty plains and lots of walking, this might be the game for you.
Introducing a game with modern day graphics and loading screens as if you are on a playstation 2. Enjoy the wonderful experience of walking from home to a library and then walk back home and then back to the library to then exit the library and go to some temple. In that short commute you will experience a total of 7 loading screens.
If you want to play a good game play Nier Automata. Now that is a masterpiece
Really Enjoy this game but until they remove the forced troll the player text section I cannot recommend, if you fk with the player it works both ways :) only it costs me nothing to ruin your reputation. If removed I will change this review to positive your move troll devs since you insist on these games :) real shame its not a work of passion and love like Nier Automata.
running simulator with classical music with occasional fighting.
Nier Automata is much more enjoyable
do you like redoing literally hours of the game over and over again? yeah me neither but apparently you have to because, f u c k you i guess? its not that i want to save scum but things can happen and that can result in replaying a mission over and over again, im looking at you you stupid temple to save the facade prince
mf think he kyon tell me your real name bro
Wont get you on the same level as automata, but its worth a play through at full price.
Is NieR
I miss how old games were made
Just started playing and it would be very nice if they made mouse buttons compatible for the controls. great game and recommend Nier:Automata
Performance issues made this game unplayable.
Yoko Taro is the fucking GOAT as always also trans rights
poor story + repetitive gameplay
"i came in to cure depression only to get more of it" the game
YES! Just yes! You could argue about the backtracking and the repetition but all of that is trivial. Instead focus on the way this game delivers its story. You have to play it for yourself to get that fuzzy feeling with every little revelations shown to you in each playthrough and how it all comes together in the end. I only couldn't bring myself to get the ending C.
P.S.A. : Do the sidequests with the easier requirements, they're the most story rich. The grindy ones (as in gather 10 of an extremely rare material) are mostly for the gold reward (except for one).
KEYBOARD/MOUSE/CONTROLLER worked only on first launch, and has since ceased to function outside of game menu. Internet is flooded with reports of this issue.
Great game! Interesting story and the combat seems to have a lot of room to grow after the first 3 hours of the game.
it's nier so expect unreasonably hot women
Coming from Nier:Automata I was expecting big things from this game regardless of it being a prequel, and it delivered adequately. Overall I would say Nier:Automata is a better game all around, but I also acknowledge that that is an extremely high bar.
Nier:Replicant's gameplay, characters and especially narrative are still extremely good, and far better than your average triple A game. Overall, I highly recommend both. They're both experiences that deserve to be played for people passionate about good single player games.
The only thing that truly annoyed me was that cutscenes mid boss fight ate into the time for the boss speedrun achievements, I want to be fast but also get lore at the same time :(
It is one of my all-time Favorite games of all time played Neir automata back in 2017 and loved it and this best game ever. The music and the storytelling are so good I will never hate this game or the series
I like the game a lot,but i cant get a stable 60fps on any settings,,,,,
