Despite the fact that I liked the game too much, it is reflected in the number of hours invested on my part, it is a game that is difficult for me to recommend to the entire public, this is because the stories of the characters are not connected, and the interactions of them feel very artificial.
the playable part of the game is extremely addictive and amazing, it is definitely the best part of it, the combats are very pleasant, there are better stories than others and characters that are going to be better than others, something that I did not like is that despite the fact that the stories are independent, the game sets your first character as the main character, when in fact there are 8 main characters, since each story is independent of the others.
something very positive are the hidden bosses, which do provide a great challenge, and the final boss of the postgame is spectacular, and becomes very challenging if you reach a lower level than recommended, in everything else, including its soundtrack I do not have Complaints, on the contrary, I enjoyed the game a lot and even in some aspects it seemed short, but fair.
In my personal opinion, the best character in the game is Tressa, but it is a personal taste, apart from design and attitude, she was my favorite character, and the attributes and jobs with which she can be mixed, in my personal opinion, make her the best character in the games. 8.

Octopath Traveler is a very fun and engaging game. I really enjoy the unique story lines for each character, even if they don't really tie together beyond some vague mentions here and there by NPCs. Overall, I would definitely recommend this game if you're a fan of JRPGs and games that are pretty to look at!

Octopath Traveler is less of an RPG and more like eight mini RPGs rolled into one. The diverse character cast allows for widely different stories and a vastly different experience. It is wildly unlike anything I could have ever hoped to expect, and it would be better if there were more games like it. It is an absolute masterpiece that everyone should play.

Octopath Traveler is a love letter to those RPGs of our childhood, it evokes that nostalgia of 'I have been here before'. I could go on and on about the story but, there are probably other reviews that go in detail much better than I could.

The gameplay is fun and never gets tiring. The graphics are very beautiful even when playing in low settings (rotten potato pc), and the music. Good lord the music! There are times when I just don't do anything and just stay there listening, my favourites so far are the one's that play on Borderfall, Flamesgrace, and Primrose's ch1 ending music.

Around +20h and this is 60$ very well spent.

This game is good. It's a good RPG. It has fun characters, amazing music, and a great combat system. However, there's also a reason only 30% of people get halfway through the game. This game is a JRPG through and through. It has an expansive world with sidequests everywhere, and it takes a long time to complete. In a way, it is the JRPG experience brought to the max, with all its greats and not-so-greats. So does this game truly justify the hours you spend in it? Not really, imo. Though it is the archetypical JRPG to the max with all its charm, it doesn't innovate on it either. It doesn't bring anything new to the table. It's a good game. Good. Nothing more, nothing less.

I really wanted to like this game, but sadly I have to write a negative review.
First, the game is beautiful. It is 2d graphics pixel art mixed with some 3d effects. The combat is also decent. You have your classic turn-based combat with a twist in the weak point system. This makes it a bit more interesting, but will get boring eventually. This is okay for me. I know that these systems are limited, and I didn't expect for a game like this to be tactically interesting until the end.
The things I do expect from a JRPG are a good story, interesting characters and a world you want to engage in. For me, none of these points have been met.
The story consists of 8 sub-stories, that each have about 4 missions. Each story follows one character on a quest. Some are more interesting than others, but not one actually grabbed my attention. Each character is bland, defined by one guiding principle like: "I believe in the good in people" or "knowledge should be shared with everyone" and that produces no interesting characters. These principles are tested throughout the journey, but never doubted. There is no conflict within them. It feels like you are watching a sitcom and at the end of an episode someone says "and the moral of the story is: don't steal kids".
Also, there is no real interaction between the characters in the party. I think I would have really helped to get some conversation between. In the end, I didn't really felt invested in any of these blueprint-type characters.
Also, the stories told are pretty small-scale. You don't have your typical world ending scenarios and killing gods, which would have been okay, if the writing had been decent.
Although the graphics are nice, the landscapes are pretty boring. Woods, coasts, mountains, with no sign of creativity.

For me, I compared this game a lot to Golden Sun, since that is my nostalgia JRPG. And what I missed from that game are the animations. In this game most attacks are boring: You hit, stab or sweep. The magic is basically only 3 spells. And then I remember the summons from Golden Sun, where you have a meteor falling from the sky, or you summon a god to help you. And the same sense of excitement to perform an attack I never felt in this game.

Conclusion

I have to add that I did not do everything, because later there are some really tough bosses and could not be bothered to grind these. But for me, this game was a disappointment, since it did not deliver on the important points. The game does have a lot of content, and nice music, but that gets repetitive and boring. With no story to keep me engaged, it just is not a good JRPG.

i know i have right next to no play time but i really enjoy the aesthetics of the sprites it takes us back to the good days of where micro never existed but with a modern flare to it and it runs smooth as heck with hardly any gpu usage can literally run this at max on a potato and a hamster wheel and it really feels nostalgic to ff 1-4 with how the combat is just great.

Fascinating beautiful music, graphics, and their stories. My current play time is almost 100 hours and each character still has story chapters left. Walking around every town and talking with people there are really enjoyable.
Love this game.

U have never played jrpgs before, so I played this game without any bias or nostalgia.
Unfortunately I cannot recommend this game. Granted, I have just played 4hrs, but the game just feels very repetitive and grindy. After reading some more critical reviews it seems that it does not get better either, and the each story chapter seems to follow the same template. While I have not played all characters, after two characters it does seem to be the case.

The good:
-very cute and well done graphics, that pay homage to old-school games
-soundtrack

The bad:
-people praise the combat system, but to me it feels very repetitive. I play a lot of tactical turn based games, and this one is below average in my opinion and does not offer much variety, you end up using the same strategy every fight. The game also forces you into boring easy combat encounters, so you end up grinding against your will.

Great game. Very slow start but got me hooked when they let you mix and match subjobs since i enjoy minmaxing dps.

Story wise is what you'd expect from a JRPG, it's good, but some characters' story feels a bit cliched. Also the interactions between characters are nowhere near enough (They only give you short travel banters between characters that does not add to the actual story itself). So it's more like 8 characters doing their own thing with their story, the others are just extras that offer you help that you met by chance (they don't even give compelling enough reason as to why these characters are traveling together).

Hopefully the story aspect of the game gets better with the next game.

Great game! Played it the first time on the Ninetendo Switch console but after I swiched to PC I had to buy it again and especially after I saw the new part coming up in 2023. I just like the feeling of an openworld RPG with nice graphics and an awesome soundtrack. Also the story is pritty huge. 10 out of 10.

It's a pretty fun game, but it can be a bit of a slog at times. The pacing of the story, because of how fractured it is, is slow and takes a long time for things to happen- it made me think about under the dome by Stephen King a lot. As long as you're patient this is a very fun game.

The art style and graphics for this game are gorgeous. This is the new gold standard for retro role playing games. The music is incredible and very complex. I still can't believe this game lost the award for best music the year it released. If you are a fan of JRPG's and retro 16-bit era games, it doesn't get any better than this. Highly recommend.

Very fun game! Reminds me of Final Fantasy 5/6 sort of games. Combat is easy to pick up, and it doesn't "appear" to be too grindy so far as carefully using the proper units can help alleviate the need for that.

Gameplay loop isn't very satisfying - you execute each and every fight almost exactly the same way. Having to use all the party members in addition to the game already feeling rather grindy is too tedious. The alchemist job working around items is annoying and there are very few secondary jobs (mostly just reuses the main character classes).

High grind low reward. I don't mind grind games, but you would expect to obtain high rewards. And if it did, it is painfully slow. Rewards on a few bosses need to be better. It's painful to see a level 21 boss only give 200 xp. I advice you stick to a party of 4 and try not to level up/do the stories on all characters all at once. Spread 'em out through different playthroughs.

Kain

Classic style turn-based RPG that looks great. Combat is fairly generic, with a boost point mechanic which can make it a bit more interesting. I love the visual look of the game and how it makes the classic pixel RPG style stand out. The weakest part of the game is the story, or lack there of. Instead of have an overarching story, they went with 8 seperate stories that don't really weave together. Get this one on sale. It is a fun game but I don't think its worth full price

This game isn't good.

Ok I get the idea they were going for I truly do. I was born in 1985 so I grew up with the classics. Chrono Trigger, FF6, FFT, Wizardy 5, Breath of Fire 1/2/3, Valkyrie Profile, Shining Force the list goes on. I've been gaming for 30+ years and this game isn't it.

I'll elaborate.

I truly understand what they were going for here. Eight strangers meet "by chance" and form a party and eventually work together for a common goal. However the way it's presented in the game is so bad I cannot recommend this.

First major problem. The characters don't talk to each other outside of generic banter. No this banter does not excuse poor writing nor does it excuse these characters not interacting together in a cohesive plot. Every chapter you do for whichever character you pick feels like JUST that character is doing this entire storyline with nobody else present. Nobody else gives their input, nobody else interacts with any NPCs involved in the chapter other than the character who's chapter it's for. Nothing. It's just lifeless.

Second major problem I have with this game is scaling. For whatever reason Square Enix decided to scale monsters with the player yet not give bench experience points? So not only are there 800 million random encounters but I have to grind my benched party too? No. Stop doing that. Not only are there WAY too many random encounters they are just quite tedious and cumbersome. The stronger you are the easier it is to run from battles but isn't that unintuitive? If you refuse to fight the battles you'll just not progress the game obviously.

Third major problem with the game. Some characters are just WAY too strong. Some of these characters are just flat out better versions of other characters. A few examples. H'aanit is just a straight up better version than Olberic. H'aanit sub jobs warrior is just flat out better in every circumstance. Alfyn the alchemist is just flat out better version than Ophilia. 3000 HP heal for entire party at the cost of like what? a 100 gold item? He's insane. Blasting the entire party with full BP and or speed ups and or other ATK/DEF ups at the cost of the most accessible and cheapest materials in the game? That character is absolutely insane. The merchant I think her name is Tressa? 30,000 gold and you 1 shot nearly every boss in the game about 70% of the way through. I watched a speedrunner do it and I thought jokingly "This can't be real" logged in and instantly killed whatever boss I was on doing the same thing. How is this in the game? No 30k isn't expensive. It's rather easy to come by for anybody thinking it's difficult. The dancer character was just bad and the mage character is O-K I guess until you can subclass the mage class onto the merchant girl and then it's just GG the game just plays itself.

Fourth major problem I have with the game is the dungeons and overworld. They really are just long hallways with tiny "Oh no theres a hallway behind this black wall that gives a chest!" kinda of thing right? I could understand if this was just a Chapter 1 thing all around but it's not. I'm almost to chapter 3 for all characters and it's still literally the same copy/pasted formula why? It's such lazy and uninspired design I just can't force myself to slog through another "Run down a hallway until you see a merchant and save point!"

The art is decent. The soundtrack is average. The combat started off well enough but ended up being just tedious. The story is very bad for above reasons. The graphics and the Unreal Engine with 2D sprites on a 3D plane was a nice touch. I really thought that was awesome how the game looks and feels.

I have other major problems with the game but I'll just stop there. Those were the huge ones and for those reasons and otherwise it's just an average RPG with lackluster storytelling elements with 0 character interactions (besides generic banter that's forgettable) I just can't recommend it. I really wanted to like this game but I've gotta be an honest man. This game isn't good.

Awesome game. I feel like it always kicks my butt in terms of being strong enough for bosses. I really need to grind to keep up with the recommended levels for the story. All in all still a fantastic time with a great soundtrack to boot too!

Solid JRPG that dares to experiment with new ideas.

Pros:

+ Art style - gorgeous pixel art style using 2D sprites on 3D back drops with good use of particle effects, motion blur, and depth of field.
+ Combat system - a fresh take on turn based combat, employing resource management, staggering enemies, and creating burst phases using buffs and debuffs.
+ Character design - characters feel somewhat unique even towards the end game.
+ Sound track and sound design - an excellent sound track and overall good sound design that employs dynamic sound transitions and effects.

Cons:

    - Poor writing - questionable dialogue, lack of over arching story, and minimal character exploration.
    - Lack of character bonding - the characters rarely interacting with each other makes for a very immersion breaking experience.
    - Shallow exploration of fields and dungeons - each character's chapter is very formulaic in progression. Furthermore, there is not much to do in fields and dungeons aside from opening chests.
    - The grind - a lot of people have said that the game is grindy, but not something I felt personally.

Octopath Traveler has all the makings of a great JRPG, but falls short due to some glaring issues. Still a good time and certainly a game I'd recommend to fans of the genre.

not your usual JRPG at all, but at the same time, your usual JRPG.
a treat to your senses, a good enough story (eight histories) and also a build your own path like no other game in a while.

totally recommendable if you like FF SNES series or any old squaresoft JRPG game.

The game is good. It's your typical square enix RPG. If you like what they do, you will probably like this. The combat is fun and the secondary job system is interesting. My only real issue is the story. Since the whole game is built around 8 people, they all sort of have their own mini stories. This leads to some lackluster moments... You don't ever really feel like you are a group of friends out on a quest for a main goal, and that to me is what half of an RPG is about. I do think it is worth a play, I just wish they would have had more centralized character moments and dove into the characters companionship more than the occasional 5 lines of dialogue between each other.

If you don't play Octopath Traveler, I feel bad for you son.

This game is seriously amazing. I have not played a turn based RPG in over 15 years but instantly fell in love with this beautiful piece of art.
The sprites are gorgeous, the stories are intriguing and immersive, the locale's are seriously stunning visuals, the combat is glorious and takes decent brain power to succeed successfully.

If you are thinking about getting this game, DO IT. BUY OCTOPATH TRAVELLER! give it an hour and half of play and decide for yourself!

But I love this game!

OVERRATED, OVERPRICED.

1) Eight characters, different mediocre (mostly trash) SHORT STORIES which has NO RELATION TO ONE OR OTHER.
2) Poor UI, poor item/skill description.
3) Poor terrain navigation. Your vision will get blocked by terrain, no see-through when character is behind terrain.
4) For a turn-base combat system, this is very poorly made. No strategy (positioning), poor stats scaling, awful job skills, stupid shield system.

Genso Suikoden from 20years ago is still so much better than this shit.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this game.

It is probably my favourite game of all time and that's really impressive considering all the other great games I'va played so far. It looks amazing, very simple but awesome at the same time. The story, well, could've been better, but I love all of the eight different stories either way. The battle system is nothing new really, and still feels very fresh. The boost point system and the shield system work great and the further you get the more strategy you have to have. If you just go full attack you will not win your batttles in the third and fourth chapters. The ending quest with the secret final boss is just amazing. Whilst playing you hear some names a few times but the resolution tops of everything else by far.

All in all: 9.5/10, would recommend

SoftSnow
SoftSnow

A charming 3D pixel style jrpg with a very good combat system. There's a total of 8 characters that can join your party and each have their own individual story and people-interacting ability. It gives an open world vibe since you can actually explore all the areas connecting the villages and towns and anything in between.

Art: 8/10 - Gorgeous old school with a new 3D flare. Could improve with cut scenes and more story telling graphics.
Battle: 10/10 - Not complicated, yet deep. Planning even in simple battles is rewarding.
Freedom: 9/10 - The game allows for high flexibility. You pick your own path, play at your own pace, with your own preferred team.
Music: 8/10 - So far so good. Fits the vibe.
Story: 7/10 - Have not cleared yet but it works well enough. No wall of text to bother people who hate stories also. Although, for people who do love stories, wish the heroes would interact more between them.

In summary: Octopath traveler is a charming gaming experience. Simple yet efficient. Totally recommended for all jrpg lovers out there.

I have soft spot for those retro games but even as this one could be hit decade ago, it feels pretty much as just overrated and fairly overpriced nostalgia abuse.

Since the beginning of game I was still trying to figure out what is so good on this game and after finish I have to admit that I failed to find out.

There is 8 characters, 8 stories that are more personal for each character, there is not any real interaction or connection between chars beside some generic banters which make their adventure or making the party somehow without proper build up to make interest for player. I appreciate there is not any "save the world" narrative, however not single of stories was interesting enough - some like Dancer`s had good moments (even reference to Godfather..) but overall it was too childish and naive for my taste, probably should keep remind myself I am really not into those poor japanese melodramatic plots.

The world is in similar manner not very interesting build up, the side stories are fetch quests without much invention and easy to forgot (+they require player to remember every single NPC in the world and be good detective to based on one cryptic sentence realize he is supposed guide old woman from other corner of the world to man in another city)

But what was probably most disappointing is the combat mechanic that take major part of gameplay - almost everything is highly unbalanced starting from given jobs or progress zones and gear reward. Levels/grind XP is almost completely irrelevant as huge majority of stats come from gear, that on other hand is rarely from bosses and dungeons, but can be just bough/stolen from shops and NPC, making sense of progress and beat challenges quite unrewarding. That said there is too many random encounters that feel eventually too bothering, repetitive and tiring without giving anything valuable (beside some cash). Really hard to recall any other game of this type where having 20 levels (out of some 99 cap) simply dont matter AT ALL.

This become better by end of the game where optional dungeons finally give good rewards like OP secondary jobs but it is time where player is already exhausted and have no much reason to not just wrap up everything and go. Design of zones is not something memorable either, all have conveniently save points marking entrance and boss locations + plethora of halfways with chests (that msotly contain total irrelevant reward - if you expect to be excited by fidning powerful weapon in the dungeon - no luck, rather visit your local store.. or steal form your neighbor)

Combat itself is just about break enemy defense by using correct damage type and burn the damage while outhealing the one taking. There is no positioning, no strategy, almost no defensive tactic or tools, all is just about deal damage faster and more efficient than enemy which is mostly given by having right party members/jobs with correct damage type and saving proper usage of combat boosts.

Art and music is fine, I eventually enjoyed this part, even though it is repetitive in time. But it is not enough..

Overall, even fpr 50% off it feels quite overpriced (in comparison to many other RPGs out there), not sure who is the audience praising this game, but it was miss for me.

Octopath Traveler is a JRPG for fans of the early entries of the final fantasy series; bravely default, dragon quest and similar titles.

It's core stats & mechanics: every character has HP, SP (Skill not mana), P.Atk/Def, E.Atk/Def (Elemental not magic), Accuracy, Evasion, Speed & Critical stats. They also have XP & JP (Job XP). Each job allows a character to equip 1 or 2 weapons, learn 8 active skills & 4 passives. The first 2 active skills are given by default; 3-7 can be unlocked in any order with #8 being reserved for last place (job Mastery).

In combat your opponent will have 2-5 weaknesses; these correspond to the 6 weapon classes & 6 elements of magic. They will always follow the same priority sequence; i.e. physical first, swords will be listed before daggers. Hit the enemy enough times with attacks they're weak to and they suffer broken (reduced) defences and a 1 turn stun. You will also be able to earn 1 boost point per turn, to a max of 5. You may spend up to 3 points in one go to unleash a flurry of basic attacks. You can get bonuses for not being hit; finishing the battle in 1 turn and breaking the enemy defences. Combat occurs by walking around the world map in hostile areas. There are no sprites to indicate where enemies are located.

Outside of combat each character brings a unique skill to conversations; there are 4 pairs of skills (buy/steal; challenge/provoke; inquire/scrutanise; guide/seduce). The 'noble' skills are successful or no attempt is made; the 'rogue' skills have a percentage chance to succeed. 5 failed attempts with rogue skills will cost you a reputation reset fee. The fee increases each time you need to reset the same town.

The world map has 3 'circles' of difficulty. All 8 characters start in circle 1 and migrate outwards to circle 3. Every time you enter a new area you will be given a danger level rating as a brief warning. Too high = instant death.

Nostalgia aside, the game itself just wasn't for me. A bit dialogue heavy, no real clear story after 13 hours, and an unexpected steep difficulty curve made it seem like it was turning into a grindfest to progress. I wasn't invested in the characters or story to do that, so I decided to quit.

If you are jonesing for a turnbased RPG I would suggest Battle Chaser's: Night War or Ruin King (both from dev Airship Syndicate).

The characters' stories do not intersect or matter to each other at all. It's a very basic game that offers nothing unique or interesting. Rather than the characters complimenting each other and enhancing the story, their existences undermine each other and they have no reason to be together.

mut

This is one of the worst games ever made. It has a completely hidden "main" story line. Without going to the internet or playing an astronomical number of hours doing tertiary quests, you will never find the actual ending. The game will end early, convincingly, with 10+ minutes of unskippable credits to try to get you to think you've arrived at the (incredibly mediocre and abrupt) ending. If you stick through it, you get deposited back in the game at whatever point you were at. Then you will assume that you just need to wrap up all 8 side quest story lines and the "main" story line will continue. Well, it won't. head to the internet to figure out which exact side quests you need to accomplish, go get those done, and then go through to the end.

There the writers will tease you with the story line interactions you were expecting the whole way. Of course, it's all tangentially tied together through a character that does not exist in any of the 8 side quests that make up the bulk of the game.

This whole thing is sloppily put together, it will let you down at virtually every single important moment, and the big moment where all the story lines coalesce never comes. At every moment possible this game will leave you feeling let down and unfulfilled, and by the time you realize you've wasted 50-100 hours of your life on this empty box it will be too late to refund it.

No one should play this game.

Beautiful 2D sprites and 3D background, and the gameplay reminds me of earlier JRPGs like Suikoden and Final Fantasy. Combat mechanics is unique to others with a little learning curve. Just not that interesting: story is extreme generic RPG, and combat is standard. The interesting hook - that characters all have intersecting storylines - disappoints because there is almost no interaction between characters and it plays pretty much like a bunch of standalone stories.

Octopath Traveler is by far one of my favorite games! I'm a huge fan of old-school JRPGs, and the plot + battle system + HD-2D really felt like a modern take on the classics.

First, the plot. There's 8 different characters, each with their own plot split into 4 chapters. As you explore the world, you visit new towns and play through each character's chapters. The plots are pretty standard JRPG plots; not super intense, but nice and entertaining. The characters are voiced, and while the voice-acting can be a bit off at times, I felt like it was a nice touch

Second, the visuals. The game world is rendered in a beautiful HD-2D way, feeling a bit like the SNES JRPGs, but with stunning colors and light effects. It feels like how you remember the old-school games through nostalgia goggles. I was absolutely dazzled

Third, the music. I'm a sucker for good JRPG music, and Octopath does not disappoint. It's orchestral music renditions are so beautiful, and they really set the tone for each of the different environments. I found myself humming the desert music long after I finished playing (in a good way). Definitely a soundtrack I'd listen to on its own

Lastly, the battle system. It has a great turn-based battle system in which each enemy has weapon-specific and/or elemental weaknesses, and if you can hit the right weakness, it gets incapacitated. Once you find a weakness, the monster forever displays the weakness under it (even in future battles), so you don't need to worry about memorizing them. It also shows the turn order at the top, so you can strategize how exactly you want to attack/defend to maximize damage and prevent enemies from attacking. I love turn-based combat, and I really enjoyed this system; it just felt right

I played this on my Switch when it first came out, and then I played it in 4K with maxed out graphics when it came out on PC, and I *highly* recommend this game. If you like SNES JRPGs, you need to play this game

I can't recommend this game

The story is all over the place as you dont play it in one sequence you play it in parts, but thats not the worst part , the worst part is each party member acts separately from each other. This is bad because lets say for example someone gets hut in another characters story , you cant help them even if you have a party member that could specialize in that situation. The game is void of any soul and the grinding and combat put me to sleep. The only good part is the music.

If the game was 20 dollars i could understand but its a full priced game that's trying to bang with games like Elden ring at the price point its offering and you're not getting your money's worth with that price point

Play something else like Library of ruina

Got this game on the Switch and because Im a tortured soul, I bought it here too.
The music is the best thing about the game bar none. Probably the best video game OST I've personally ever heard.
The gameplay and battle system is really fun, the boost system adds just that little more thinking than the mindless attack get attacked.
The story..... A couple of the stories are good, but the rest are just..... they leave a lot to be desired.
overall, Id give it a 7/10. But, without the music itd probably be a 6/10

Played it for 6 hours but still wasn't pulled in. Maybe it's the graphics or the random story of each character and how they don't seem to be related to each other. In fact the characters don't really interact together or with anything apart from their stories.

This is actually the first JRPG I've played fully since the first final fantasy and i have to say it lives up to the genre greatly. It's got the characters, it's got the world map which is really big for a JRPG, it has great JRPG action and pretty good item and skill roster. Now i have to give credit to the art style as well. It's something that's a good blend with modern tech and classic pixel art that makes a great combo and it lives up to that and more. Oh and i forgot to mention the soundtrack is phenominal as well, the composers and artists did an amazing job as always. My final rating is 9/10 which is play this game and you won't regret it

Stop bully me
Stop bully me

Game is fun, it's super chill, you can watch something in between story as the fighting is turn-based and not reliant on your undivided attention. The chapters are amazing and the characters are a joy.

That said, i grinded both teams up ready to fight the 'final' boss. They're overlevelled by at least 10 levels each as far as the guides mentioned, skills unlocked, support skills all set up ready.

Attempt 1 my team got wiped because i used my 'main/physical team' on a magic fight which i didn't know to be fair, the attempt 2 took me 35 minutes with my magic team and when my main team gets to the final phase they get wiped in turn 1. I lost interest fast because to attempt the final boss you also have to kill the 8 other bosses and regardless of which team i pick took me around 2 hours to kill off all of them.

2 hours a go just to attempt the final boss is a severe downside and why people get put off JRPGs to begin with, there is no harm in having a save point after killing the 8, the developers just seemed to want to put that in for story which is great, but realistic it puts off gamers who didn't spend an extra full week grinding up to level 85-90. I've seen people and videos of them using a cheese setup to clear it but those since are not possible anymore.

Great game, but can't put in another 60 hours just to farm all my characters up more for a single achievement.

This is a really great game that is a modern take on the CRPGs of the 2000s. I think games like Golden Sun, Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics were strong inspirations for the creation of this game. Which is fitting in a way because Square Enix is the game's creator and they had a hand in the Final Fantasy Tactics franchise in the past and have a deep resume on making CRPGs. Octopath Traveler is one of their better titles in recent years.

The combat of Octopath Traveler is straight forward: Attack an enemy with their weakness which can be a specific weapon type or magic type to break their guard. When their guard is down you press the button that amplifies your attack damage and let them have your full force when they are left vulnerable to attack. Rinse and repeat throughout most of the storyline. There are some fights where the game will force certain circumstances on the player where they will need to improvise around this tactic but for 95% of the game you can fight every fight this way and be fine.

Octopath means 8 paths which reflects the 8 characters you can play as. Each character has their own unique starting location and story arc that you essentially travel the game world trying to solve. And each character has their own fighting style where they only have access to a maximum of 2 weapon types, one magic type (excluding the mage character) and potentially a unique combat tree where you make potions or use captured animals to fight for you. And every character has their own non-combat skill they can use with NPCs to either obtain information, obtain items, gain an NPC as a follower for use in combat or you can just straight up mug them. Those are the 4 outcomes of the non-combat skills and you will have 2 versions of each of those with some minor differences. Those differences can be probability based vs level based, haggling vs stealing and dueling vs proxy fighting. But those non-combat abilities can solve quests outright, find hidden items and give you more diversity in your combat repertoire.

Each of the 8 playable characters have their own story lines. As you progress through their stories the other 7 characters will exchange dialogue with the character whose story you are progressing through. I liked the exchanges they had because it allowed the outside characters to comment on the actions and choices being made and it showcased how every character had their own story lines. That choice to add that in gives the characters depth and makes the player have an emotional connection with each character.

But as good as the combat and the storylines can be, I think my favorite part of the game is the music. It's very reminiscent of Final Fantasy in this regard where some of the music tracks and character motiffs are catchy and enjoyable. And there's dozens of people out there who have taken the liberty of making cover versions of the in game music, so if you're into video game sound tracks this is a good one to look into.

This is a good buy for anyone who enjoys good CRPGs, a good soundtrack and fluid combat. If you have an itch to play games reminiscent of Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem or Golden Sun then this game could scratch that nostalgia bug for you. This will be a bad purchase for anyone wanting a mature CRPG game since the overall tone of the game is overly optimistic and leaves no opportunity to not be the good guy fixing the lives of everyone you meet. And while you can replay the game, I think if you try to "full completion" the game you can do so on one save file.

Still in Chapter 1 but so far this game is great. It runs great on PC and on the Steam Deck. Do yourself a favor and get this game.

This is a good game albeit a shallow one.

Combat: The combat flows nicely & doesn't get stale as the game encourages one to mix up their party frequently & use different skill sets. The information displayed allows one to set up a sequence & think above who'll be doing what. Some of the bosses are incredibly fun & well designed. However, the normal enemies have almost no real mechanics so getting to the bosses can be a bit humdrum at times.

Story: It does eventually culminate into a crescendo where all 8 story lines intersect; however, this is not in the main game - this in the post game activities. I think it could have been more organic if the post game sequence and story was shifted into the main game with more character interaction & banter regarding it.

Music: Wonderful music. Very whimsical & excellent use of strings.

Voice Acting: Some stand out moments and nothing that felt out of place. Class act job.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium. There is no difficulty slider & some of the encounters may stomp you once or twice - But after you know what the boss does the game gives you all the tools to form a winning strategy.

To be honest I feel the game isn't quite finished, was forced to be released early, and had the potential to be more; still, this was a very enjoyable time.

Too much linear
Characters do not interact with other characters' stories
No clue to solve ANY secondary quests (impossible without following walkthroughs on the net, boring)
Stories / Dialogues : FinalFantasy-like for 10 years old child

Very disappointed, i give up :(

Art style, soundtrack, story, characters, and just everything about it is perfect.

The art style and 16-bit graphics are reminiscent of Final Fantasy classics, while the perspective and modern particle effects (to include the lens flaring and focal length effects) offer a novel approach to this JRPG style title.

I would argue that it perhaps has a non-ideal default keyboard layout for controls, but a game pad or controller make this one fluid and VERY difficult to put down once you pick it up.

It's addicting, immersive, original where it counts, and one I can't wait to share with friends! It's made this 30+ year-old excited to sit down, de-stress and play a well-written story in my (now) rarefied free-time!

9.5/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Only 1 of many attacks work effectively, and it's the attack of her pet. I choose the female hunter, btw. There is no feeling that I'm the one playing. It's just a powerpoint that requires me to click 1 button to advance the fight.

Also, characters talk and talk and talk and nothing is really said. It's like they like to hear the sound of their own voices while they say "thou" and pompous stuff like that. So lame and boring.

So you have a bad gameplay with bad story. And the game is expensive. F' no! I'm refuding that sht right now lol

I would really like to recommend this game, but i cannot. the dialogue boxes and amount of skip scenes in the opening for each traveler is abhorrent. I found myself skipping up to 9 scenes in a row just to be able to move to the next screen where i was met with another box of verbal diarrhea lasting up to 6 skips later. this is to much just let me play the game.

They're not bad stories by any means, but they have worn their welcome out in my heart. That being said the music and turn based strategy is through the f'n roof. Not to mention the obviously dated graphics that write an artistic love letter to the snes rpg era.

Both artistically and musically this game is a work of art, the sprite work and themes of this game really resonate for people who enjoy this style of RPG.

I would not have known this game had a final act (or a true final boss) if I did not have prior knowledge of it and would have figured that the game was over once all eight tales had reached their conclusion. While it is hinted at through the various traveler's tales, it feels rushed and cobbled together. The characters that are focused throughout the conclusion to the story are side characters you run into no more than 3-4 times throughout your 40-70 hour play through, but at the same time are pivotal to the conclusion of the story and who's importance are only made whole and clear via a post boss rush infodump before the final encounter.

I got my money's worth from the journey, but the destination did not feel worth it.
