I dub this game GASLIGHT SIMULATOR because it felt that all throughout the story, poor David was being gaslit by EVEREYONE! IN a story where youre a psychiatrist looking to help five patients discover what happened to him, your biggest challenge is figuring out why David even BOTHERS to stay!

The graphics were fine for the time period, the music was okay, and the voice acting was subpar. The gameplay was okay, but it could have been better. But the story is THE worst part, even up to the SyFy quality ending (you know, the endings that just end with little to no resolution). I CANNOT recommend this game unless you are just curious or it's on a DEEEEEEP discount!

B.
B.

Total play time is around 15 - 20 hrs.
Plus points:
+ Nice story.
+ Good audio acting.
Minus points:
- This game is not exactly a typical point-and-click game: There is not a complicated puzzle solving mechanism, not much thinking is needed, it is more of an interactive story.
- The game mechanism is not player-friendly. It is sometimes challenging to figure out what to do next, especially with the patients.

I recommend this game if you want to go through a nice story; however, I am not sure if this game deserves the full price. You can get it when there is discount.

Game was good until the last chapter where the devs decided to make one of the puzzles very unfair (it involves an unintuitive keypad and guessing a word from a previous cutscene), which guarantees that most people will have to use a walktrough to proceed further. Is it so hard to make a game where the puzzles are doable without resorting to longplays or walktroughs? How many adventure games need to follow this stupid tradition?
So after giving up and just watching the end on Youtube, I also find out that the whole finale is kind of lame and rushed, with some questions remaining unanswered.
I am really sad to give this game a thumbs down because I was enjoying it so much, but the underwhelming final scenes suck out all the fun.

One of my most beloved games from childhood!
Was very happy when i found it after all this years that it was availble on Steam!
Great Psycho/Detective game, with a lot of twist and turns.
Hard reccomend for anyone who enjoy this heartwarming old school gaming expirience of just sitting alone in your room and just playing a good game.

I would class this as a well written game which is somewhere between a point and click adventure and interactive story. I would prefer it having more puzzles and fewer passive plot triggers (by that I mean walking to a particular location or talking to someone without good reason to make progress).

Despite some gameplay issues, this is a really interesting and engaging story with some well thought out characters. It will provide a good 8-10 hours of entertainment.

The premise is that you a\re a psychiatrist who is called on to investigate 5 unusual and possibly related cases in an isolated asylum on Staten Island. The background of your patients soon appears suspicicious and at the same time the main character has complications in his personal life that make things very difficult to handle.

The downside is that there aren't any real puzzles. You have an inventory much like a traditional point and click but any puzzles involving that are really easy. The game is somewhat artificially drawn out by the mechanic of interviewing patients- you need to play audio clips at your patients and the choice of clip and/or which patient you'e supposed to be interviewing at a particular time doesn't really make a lot of sense. So you end u wandering back and forth until something happens. It gets tedious after the second chapter of the game.

Fortunately the story, voice acting and graphics keep it interesting and enjoyable.

In short, an intriguing story with good acting and excellent atmosphere only mildly hampered by a clunky mechanic.

Overclocked is a point and click adventure game from 2008, and a great example of how a good story cannot save a game. It has a decent, if predictable, plot and some excellent writing in spots. It even has an interesting stab at an achronological narrative. All of which is ruined by tedious, repetitive gameplay.

I won't spend much time summarizing the plot to avoid spoilers, it builds logically on the hook given above. It's predictable but well done, and would probably have made a good movie or novel or really anything other than a video game. The gimmick to the story is that it is told out of order through flashbacks by a group of mental patients, and from a storytelling perspective that is done well. The flashbacks build on each other and occasionally reveal different perspectives on events or answer questions raised by earlier flashbacks. What you wouldn't guess from the product summary is that the characterization is, within the limits of the terrible graphics and voice acting, surprisingly good at times. David McNamara, the player proxy and best match for a protagonist, is not a pleasant person, or the person he is initially presented as, and his character is revealed over the course of the game in a way that plays off the main plot. If the person who did the script for this game wrote a novel, I'd probably give it a look.

But none of that really matters, because the game part of this game is mostly, I'd say roughly 70-80% of what you do, is moving between five rooms with unmoving patients and playing sound clips to them in order to unlock a flashback section. The problem with this is that you have to do it over and over again, and in every case you've already heard everything you're playing back. This could have been a clever mechanic, but the poor signposting and the repetitive nature of the "puzzle" just kills the momenutm of the game unless you're using a walkthrough, and even then you spend far too much time jogging back and forth.

The flashback sections themselves are mostly alright. Those that have gameplay, a lot are only cutscenes, are typical point and click adventure game puzzles. Most of these are fine within the limits of the occasionally annoying camera system, and the occasional "stealth" puzzle that requires you to assume that someone turning their head slight becomes suddenly unable to see something that is still happening right in front of them.

If you like the idea of the story, and you can get it cheap, you may want to pick this up and go through it with a walkthrough, but otherwise you're better off finding a better point and click adventure elsewhere.

different concept to other games like none ive played before. Im going to say I recommend this game but only just. theres only ONE major fault with this game and its this: theres no way of knowing what to do next. frustrating. you do various things like ringing your ex wife up on your mobile or your lawyer just to see if youve"triggered" something that will forward you in the game. besides this its a good game. its a good story you want to find out more . and I like how you play different characters.

For a game of this length, there really isn't that much to the story, but it really makes you work to see those small shreds of story. Even with a walkthrough to get past all the "puzzles", it's painfully slow.

This is one of those old-school adventure games where most of your time will be spent listening to unskippable dialog, pixel hunting or trying random combinations of items. Anybody who has tried a Telltale Games adventure game, or anything as modern as Fahrenheit or Heavy Rain, will find Overclocked more frustrating than fun.

Slow Slow Slow - this game is somewhat annoying to review on here as there is no midle ground, its either reccomend or don't and to be honest, after completing it i am a little unsure.

The game it's self is quite good for the most part with an ok story and not too bad voice acting, that being said - it's very slow going and extremly repetative throughout, which in the end leaves you with so many unasnwered questions, makes you wonder why you just spent so much time clearing it.

if you want a good story though and don't mind the fact that it relies on repertition, then by all means give it a go - only if it's on sale though :)

Im going to be honest : I never managed to even beat the game to find out the ending.

A couple of things to know here :

-Terrible voice acting. Id say its pretty damn hard to feel the characters when dialogues sound as half-assed as they do.I understand they might not have had the budget to hire better qualified actors but the ones they had certainly could do a better job. That combined with how poorly they are scripted and boring leaves a very poor impression right from the start of the game (and it gets worse as it progresses)

-Soundtrack.Or id say almost complete lack of it.You get some ambient sounds now and then and a mildly tense music playing in tense scenes but thats it.You might as well put on a music yourself.I fucking fell asleep an hour and half into the game, what is this shit?

-Choppy animations. You can look past the average graphics in adventure games (i sure can) but poor character animations can ruin all your attempts in immresion. If you have to play this game i strongly reccomend using a walkthrough because the time it will take you to just run around and exhaust every option will take a huge amount of time : be it calling someone on the phone and waiting 15 to 20 sexonds to realise nobodys going to answer or unreasonable framerate drops in dialogues.

Im not going to outline the pros or cons of the plot because it wouldnt be fair since i havent beaten the game but you might get by now what my thoughts on that are.

So why do we play these games? Point and click Adventures.

Not for graphics, or intense gaming, but for a story, atmosphere, and puzzles.

Sometimes you find a gem. This one however is a turd. No puzzles, poorly written story, bland uninterested voice actors, and your usual cast of scooby doo/scream characters. It's almost like one of those interactive novels, except for the occasional "ok, what exactly am i supposed to do now"? Most of which is "why wont my character go to sleep to advance to the next day? Oh i didn't collect a letter at the front desk and have a drink at the bar. Nice "puzzle". It's all topped off with a wonderful depressing, gray, bleak atmosphere, but without any "thrill" or "creepyness" getting in the way of the boredom.

Game crashes every couple of hours or so.

Avoid if you can.

A classic style adventure game with a couple of interesting puzzles but you're really here for the story. A psychiatrist whose marriage is on the rocks, a detective with a chip on his shoulder, a gruff bartender and a snooty hotel clerk. The cast of characters make this a fun psychological drama dealing with tragedy both personal and global in scale. 10 hours to complete, has some classic game jankiness such as weird camera angles and hilariously bad line readings but overall a fun adventure game that covers some interesting topics and was very enjoyable to play through.

I don't know where to begin ...
Music is bad
game mechanic is very bad! You're able to call certain people only in certain areas, the animation is dull and slow, the interactions with some objects will never change throughout the entire game, some interactions are completely useless, you have to walk into a certiain room for a certain event elsewehre can happen... Characters have weird social behaviors(being held at gunpoint is a normal thing to them and not a big deal)
The graphics are dull and boring.
The voices volume is sometimes over the top and others you'll need to crank the volume to maximum to even hear what's going on.
walk around cells and playback audio clips to patients is about 95% of the game.
lots of stuff is never answered after the end, and the end makes no sense.
only good point was the structure of the storyline that was well thought out.

F This game!!!! 18.3 hours wasted!

***SPOILER SECTION***
David Never finds out who threw him off the docks
David never paid for the hotel and the bartender did he?
Never learn who killed patient #2...
ATM and the corner store are completely useless?
David seems to get her wife back even after shouting at her several times, threatning her, and showing
signs of violence toward her... but it's all fine and dandy!

I don't normally play point and click games but found a bundle of 15 games for like three dollars a year or two ago and picked this up. So for a few cents this game is definately worth it. Having your character walk around makes point and click games more enjoyable for me personally and I prefer them over the older Myst ones.

The puzzles were logical and many had to do with what recordings to play to what patients in order to violate HIPAA-- and to unlock their memories which you then play as the patient tells the story. You then violate the before mentioned HIPAA laws and share these stories with other patients.

Really the main problem and where most of the negative votes come in I think is the storyline. The first act drags on and on. The developers could have shaved three hours off the beginning. I didn't think the game became suspensful until part Four, a good five or six hours into the game.

The pacing is very strange. So the first act covers part 1-3, act two is part 4 and act three is part 5. So it has a slow drawn out start and then things feel a bit rushed because of that. The memory sequences get smaller and smaller (I had the most fun outside the memory sequences anyway). Maybe the studio was on a time crunch but if this was a movie the pacing would drive me crazy and point and click games should feel like a story.

The ending is also strange and leaves a lot of loose threads and I feel the resolution with the wife makes zero sense. I won't say if it was a happy or sad ending but it should have been the opposite of what you get. I don't want to spoil the ending, as the game is good, but characters pop up out of no where and it just requires a big suspension of disbelief.

wow, i LOVE this game, if mystery point n click is your thang, well this is really great. Am surprised ive not heard of it mentioned before, had in it my library for over a year and never knew how enjoyable it is. Bought it in a bundle and the discussion pages are barely existant, if youre like me and love to savour a damn good mystery point and click, then you will enjoy this. Also there is a great playthrough on utube by 123pazu if you need a nudge along, but its so logical that you prob wont need help. Its a decade old but apart from slowish movement , its a brilliant game.

Thumbs-up with a footnote: if Steam allowed for a numerical rating system, I'd give this game 6/10.

Overclocked: A History of Violence is a point-and-click game in the 'film noir' style. Meaning that you find the rather mundane, every-day protagonist caught up (through no fault of his own) in a web of intrigue and danger. The setting is a mental institute, and the situation is five youngsters who were forcibly admitted after a violent episode. As it happens, the patients are often catatonic and suffer from amnesia. Your job is to investigate what happened to them, and this history is revealed through the fragmented accounts of the said patients. Through their eyes, you see a story-line that is torn-up both in chronology as well as between different perspectives.

Naturally, this kind of story-telling can be the recipe for either a fumbles mess or pure brilliance. Overclocked is neither, I must say. Though the plot is interesting enough to keep playing, it never really catches you off-guard and in the end, feels kind of anti-climatic. The game raises suspicions (there is more than enough fore-shadowing), and then simply confirms them. Keeping the plot going is often simply a matter of walking to the right location and adressing the right person. Together with the easy puzzles which allow for fairly little interaction (Overclocked is somewhere between a game and an interactive story), it never really manages to draw you in completely.

By no means a bad game, but simply one that never moves beyond the mere 'alright' or 'adequate'. Pacing, voice-acting, puzzles, graphics, plot twists... they are never really bad, and also never very good. Still, fans of the genre will probably not regret buying this game on sale.

Story:
Dave McNamara a DC psychiatrist was sent to a New York Psychiatric Hospital to try and find out what caused 5 young adults to end up patient’s under nearly the same circumstances.
Dave/You will interact with them all recording the sessions and re-playing them for each other to spark memories that become Flashbacks. Flashback’s start with a Cut Scene then you control each patient through their many memory sessions.. (quite fun)

As you keep playing and record sessions with them everyone’s lives begin to intertwine and the pieces start to unravel.. Dave’s own life unravels as well!
Edge of your seat stuff here people..
I’M NOT KIDDING!!
This would have been a great movie!

The storyline was fantastic! Had me fooled so many times..
I thought I had the ending all figured out by Chapter II--Not even close!
I had every single person as the “Bad Guy” at some point..
------
Casual 3rd person point and click maneuvering and easier to use inventory item’s .
Most of the game required a lot of thinking, listening trial and error! And then there were the WTH moments where I had to save the game and look up what to do, or how to do it often!
One puzzle entering a code in the last chapter really required memory from hours past and that still didn‘t work for me.. Had to cheat-more then once!
------
Con’s, Sort Of:
We should have had some way to re-call dialogues (like a diary) when Dave loses his PDA permanently.. Otherwise you need a Steele trap or photographic memory for the ending!

They did such a good job on graphics for an older game except when Dave’s glass at the bar doesn’t come anywhere near his mouth it looks like he dumps all his whiskey in his lap.
-----
Tid Bit’s:
I noticed something right away that I thought was a clue.. In the patient files everyone was sent there by a Judge. It say’s Hon- for Honorable so and so on everyone’s chart except for Cell #1 it just had a name. Either the developers did that on purpose to fool gullible people like me, or it was a blooper!

This game reminded me of some Nancy Drew games in that you might want to take some notes.. I did..

As with the last 3 games I’ve played by Adventure Company they inserted playing computer game’s into this one, made references to playing and put some of their own work in this one as well. The Poster by the bus stop is an ad for "The Moment Of Silence" by House Of Cards..

1. Funny thing I missed the first play through.. Keep an eye on the car in front of Dave's hotel!

I really wish there were 100’s that play like This one..

Despite what the screenshots shows, this game is not compatible with modern 16/9 ration screens. (720p, 1080p, 1440p etc)

The image is distorded and flatened with two black bands up and down.

Badly conceptualized because in 2008 16/9 screens were already a norm.

This is an pretty solid, above average point and click game that I think any fan of the genre will enjoy. It suffers from many of the same flaws games in this category face (awkward, blocky animations, clunky mechanics, and the story definitely grips you but kind of falls flat at the end), but nothing so horrible that I would say avoid it. It definitely introduced some interesting story telling devices and provided a solid challenge that outside of a few weird puzzles didn't have me running for hints.

This was a riveting story; I would say that the game play was minimal but in my opinion, this didn't detract.
The characters were all believable and well rounded...they didn't seem like run of the mill game characters.
That is, except for the female characters whose physical figures were totally ridiculous.
In this respect, the age of the game shows .
However, the voice acting was fantastic.
The graphics were very good too; not just the incessant rain, but other details, such as the water at the ferry dock and the landscapes....
I recommend this game....

pros

+ great looking and detailed 3D graphics and beautiful pre-rendered scenes
+ highly detailed and well made character models and animations
+ believable characters with realistic characterizations
+ well made cinematic cut scenes
+ gloomy atmosphere
+ suspenseful musics
+ a intriguing, mature and suspenseful story which slowy unravels
+ puzzles are enjoyable and not too difficult.
+ there are a total of six playable characters.

cons

- there are no Steam achievements
- game doesn't drop cards
- the voice acting varies in quality

Overall, this is an pretty good psychological thriller adventure game. i think game is verging more towards interactive movie than a old school p'n'c adventure game so i really enjoyed and recommended!

It's creepy, it's immersive, it's not crashing (too much). The characters are believable (considering most are mentally unstable), and the mafia/politicians/businessmen mix is so spot-on, I would think they made it politically correct for at least one country I have lived in

Honestly, the story has a good buildup, the mystery is solvable and it just flows nicely into the gameplay. It's one of those hidden treasures I have ignored for far too long obviously.

The best way I could summarise Overclocked would be to say that the game was an absolute repetitive drag to play, but the story, the characters and twists and turns still made it an entertaining experience. I stopped playing around half way and was debating wether I could come back to it. The gameplay consists of a very predictable rinse/repeat nature. Much like real life in a sense. But the story and questions I had would ultimately keep me coming back to finish it.

GOOD

+Gloomy and atmospheric environments and lots of rain on the city streets make for a great backdrop to this noir thriller.
+The music varies from top tier cinematic and emotive pianos with strings, to a more distorted and industrial rock during the patient recollection segments. Music is stripped back for most of the game where the good sound design peaks through. It's an immersive sound experience on headphones.

+The story is probably the highlight of Overclocked. Which unfortunately is hard not to spoil in a review. The game only really ramps up around the half way point. Our main protagonist Dave McNamara, is a psychiatrist who has been sent to work at a mental hospital on an island. You are to use your expertise to figure out what happened to five mysterious teenagers who all have signs of severe trauma/PTSD and are mute for the most part, they also seem to have violent/aggressive tendencies. The majority of the game is spent in these patient recollection flashback sequences. Which I think are probably the weakest part in the gameplay side of things. The mystery is pieced together through these recollections between the five patients which is sometimes out of chronological sequence.
The other aspect of the story I personally found more interesting. To put it simply without spoiler territory, Our main protagonist has a lot of personal issues in his life outside of his professional career. He has a very short temper and likes a good drink or ten. His wife and friends seem to have a perspective different from the one we have as the player. It starts out quite mundane and seems to be just a bit of backstory and nothing more but it becomes a major turning point in the main plot which I don't believe Iv'e seen before in a game like this.

+ The voice acting was good, although some of them were not so good. Dave McNamara our lead was quite believable in a sort of every-man way (think of Guy Cihi's performance of James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2 if you've played that game.) He really gave it his all in some scenes.

BAD

- Unfortunately as far as adventure games go, this one isn't the strongest in terms of gameplay. There are 5 days working on the case. Each day you wake up in the hotel, look at your phone, talk to the hotel porter, take the ferry to the island, and then talk to the five patients in the mental hospital. The patients are pretty zombified, and so as an effective way to bring back certain memories you use a PDA to record each of your sessions. The PDA is essentially just your mobile phone which you record police interview style voice recordings to log your discoveries throughout the investigation. The PDA sucks, it controls terribly and it takes a long time to scroll through each individual voice clip. To get a patient to recollect a memory you must play a relevant voice clip from another patient. If you choose the wrong voice clip you have to wait for it to play out. There are a lot of sequences that can't be skipped which should be.

- The flashback sequences will have you take control of the five patients in a rundown and abandoned army facility somewhere unknown. These short but irritating levels are usually plagued with bugs, doing mundane or boring little tasks which eventually make sense but in the moment turn out to be nothing exciting. Some of them are just cutscenes and when that happened it was genuinely a relief. These parts have much less direction on what it is you are supposed to do, so you might find yourself wandering aimlessly for a long time. Again, without spoiling the story it's hard to go into but they were really slow and difficult to get through.

- The repetitive and underwhelming nature of the gameplay hurts the game a lot. The story is quite a slow-burner and doesn't really kick up the notches til about half way. Which would have been all well and good if it was fun, but alas it wasn't. The item selection, combining items and interacting with people in the world is all functional and serves it's purpose but there wasn't much going on. You will see the same handful of environments for the entire game which gets very stale.
- The puzzles in the game are almost non-existent. But when they are present they can be either nonsensical and frustrating or easy enough for a toddler to solve. The most difficulty I experienced were parts where I had no direction of what to do and just having to slowly suffer through the PDA voice clips until something new happens.

I am having a hard time recommending Overclocked, because the whole point of a game is for you to have fun. But I am still going to be giving a thumbs up regardless! I think the sharp turn in the story and strong character development from the midway point of the game really impressed me. And much like a good crime drama or a book, I was hooked from there til the end. The ending was satisfying and at least for me it was enough to make up for the less than exciting gameplay.

The game is not bad, but it has lots of shortcomings. Although the story has some inconsistencies and the mechanics are riddled with artificial limitations, I would still commend "Overclocked: A History of Violence" for the style and the effort the developers put in it.

That was an experience I spent 8 hours on.

Um... good story I guess. I liked the build up on discovering the mystery, but the pay off for me was kind of disappointing. Once you see the thing that started the plot, it becomes a predictable timeless message that's been said before. I may be reading into it, but it almost felt a bit insulting. I feel like the developers could of come up with a better idea. Disregarding the little problem with the plot it was alright. I had fun and you may have fun too.

The acting is stiff. Everyone is either acting well or reading their lines without a new take. The sound mixing was also troubling in some areas on how it was used in the story. Sometimes it felt like it needed a amusing sound effect afterwards, because of the bad timing.

The controls surprised me a bit. It's still a point-&-click game believe me but there was some moments where I could aim the characters action, which was really cool and different. Although the game didn't much after that, it still wasn't bad with the controls.

If anyone brings up graphics in reviews then they're silly. This game was made in 2008 and for 2008 it looks fine. Some of the character models do look a bit weird though, like david's buggy eyes.

It really is just painful and depressing, with the limited scope of the engine and format really detracting from some of the big reveals. The previous game by this developer (The Moment of Silence) has some of the same feel but is somehow, in my opinion, much better.

A very good game from 2007 with an interesting story. You play David McNamara, a psychiatrist, who is investigating patients in an abandoned hospital. Slowly, you get behind the horrible past of the patients by reliving their stories. You basically play the story of the patients and see their past trauma and slowly collect the pieces. You record all interactions with the patients and need to re-play them to other patients to help them with their memory. In this case, I often peeked at the solution because I did not know the order in which I had to play each recording. Apart from this, I didn't need help to solve the game. There are not many locations, and you can only look at objects / things that are relevant, so you don't have countless monologues about furniture or decorations that have no relevance. There were very few objects to collect and interact with compared to other Point-and-Click adventures. The puzzles were not hard to solve. The music and animations were done very well considering the age of the game. Overall, a pretty good game.

Since there's much better, or at least much newer, adventure games in this style to play (such as Quantic Dream games) censoring it takes away some of the reason(s) to actually purchase/play it.

Overclocked: an Awkward Subtitle has a history of being a frustrating adventure with tedious mechanics.
This is only true to a point.
While there is some very awkward design in regard to the five patients you must interview, (they are referred to only by their room numbers in your notes and files and it's easy to confuse which patient is in which cell sometimes,) the mystery beneath is a fairly well plotted (if generic) in-reverse thriller scenario.

If you are a patient gamer with the logic skills to follow the key aspects of the dialogues, it becomes a satisfying challenge to unravel.

Also of note is that many negative reviews mention un-skippable dialogue. Most dialogue IS skippable, particularly the recordings you must play repeatedly to the patients.
One key bit of advice is that the player character will make an utterance if the recording is correct. So, for example, if you play "Day 3, morning" to patient 5 then cut the tape short and then the player says, "Hmmm..." or "Interesting..." that clue allows you to progress. You do not need to play out each recording in its entirety. [That said, there are many tapes and each runs from a few seconds to several minutes long.]

If offered at a deep discount (I purchased it at 80% off) it's entirely worth a couple of afternoons to figure out, especially if you enjoy classic Eurojank adventure games.
