This is a set that contains both Panzer Elite Action-Fields of Glory and its expansion,Dunes of War. The game isn't too bad and seeing as you get both the game and its expansion there isn't much to complain about regarding the cost. There is three factions in the main game, Soviets,Americans, and Germans. There isn't THAT much tank diversity and a lot of the models are pretty shitty looking. The game's graphics serve their purpose but are by no means great. The Tiger tank models, for example, are abysmal. The turret on the tigers isn't even there. This is a pretty noticable problem seeing as you will be fighting a LOT of these and in one mission you play as one. Also, the tank treads are not even animated. They're static textures. One thing this game does incredibly well, however, is the environments. You fight in a multitude of battlegrounds such as invading the dunes of Africa all the way to helping out the 101st in Bastogne. The AI is abysmal. The friendly tanks will just run into you and,on occasion, shoot you in the back. The enemy AI will sometimes just sit there as you obliterate them. Another problem is the tank handling. The tanks handle like Go-Karts. You may be trying to round a corner and then all the sudden you flip over. The voice acting is suprisingly good. There is absolutely no strategy involved in the game. The battles are just a rush for the repair station and then you deal with the enemies. You are able to use commands and order friendly tanks around. However, these are never very well explained even in the manual.
TL;DR
Lots of potential here but between terrible handling, graphics that leave much to desire, abhorrent AI,and the repair-rush battles this game was quite the let down.Dont buy unless you are extremely tolerant.

In the event you can actually get the game running (which for me took a considerable amount of attempts with DGVoodoo) it is quite fun. The missions are quite lengthy and variety of tanks is pleasant. The missions are similar but vary enough to still be engaging, from fighting against B1s in France to taking on Tigers with Sherman Fireflys. The AI is quite good compared to some other games. Though the main strength of the enemy AI just sheer numbers for most of the missions.

The physics of the game are definitely uncomfortable to get accustomed to, tanks cannot run over stone walls and can become stuck on various obstacles. All of the tanks go the same speed forward, hull traverse is incredibly fast, as well with turret traverse.

This feels like a predecessor to all three of the modern tank games, Armoured Warfare, World of Tanks, and War Thunder. Though it has significantly less polish than those games do, there's no different ammo types, post pen indication, or K kill capacity.

The game definitely needs a remastered edition, one compatible with modern PCs and with improved graphics, physics, and sound design.

Is this the next block buster game? Is this the new cool tank game we all have been waiting for?

No, probably not, but due to the fact that there's not much choice when it comes down to tank games, especially on Steam..It's worth your while.

The graphics are okay, although a NOT animated track is pretty bad, the gameplay is easy and fun as long as you take this as a quick tank shooting game between lunch and work.

It's nothing special, although you can see a certain amount of dedication that went into the creation of this game. Probably more than in to the creation of this shitty review after downing a bottle of Sake...

Anyway, get this game if you've got too much money on your hands, or if you just like to drive around in a tank.
But, don't expect the next Tank of Duty game.

While this game may not be graphicly impressive or very realstic, but i have had more fun with this than i have had with other tank games out there (namely WoT and War Thunder) the lack of track animation is slightly annoying, there are bigger problems with the game. at certian times it will freeze with its loading animation in the center of the screen, but a quick restart of the game fixes it right up and you can start at the latest checkpoint. As i play through more, diffrent tanks are arrive so that compleant is gone, now i see somthing that is really...quite amazing, the voice actors TRY. your Russian crew sounds diffrent from your German crew (mind blown). Even better are a few changes in the missions (which are long BTW which is fun) in one of the German missions you encounter KV-1s, which are difficult to kill, but they do NOT become the main tank for the rest of the mission (like most games would do) because, as your crew says, they are expermental and not 'battle ready' yet, which is really cool. still, i love this game, and i want modders to find this and make it even better than it already is
lets break down the review

gameplay-9/10
Story- (its WWII and you are common tankers, so) N/A
Charicters- 7/10
graphics- 6/10 (2007, i can't blame it too much but, it could be better)
Difficulty-8/10(can be changed)
amount of tanks 9/10 (no game can be perfect)
overall-8.44300194/10
This is not a game changer in the world of tank games, this is fun, simple and great worth grabbing just for some tank action (or Panzer action, or for those that are good at tanks, panzer elite action)

If you want realism, go elsewhere. If you want graphics, go elsewhere. If you want a fun goofy little tank game, then you've found one.

The physics are a bit wonky, the Tiger I doesn't render its turret, and the graphics are pants.

But hell, its cheap and its fun.

*Bit of an edit here. I'm not sure this game is actually finished. I think they ran out of money and just shipped it.

The M4 rolls when you turn it, the IS-2 seems to be in a constant state of "Falling in hole", and the tigers don't have turrets until they're dead.

This is a pack of two games (Panzer Elite Action "Dunes of War" and "Fields of Glory") with lots of potential but excuted poorly in several ways. First, the Tiger tanks are rendered without their turrets in both games. I can't believe that wasn't caught in their quality checks. Second, the tank physics in several missions is like more like a beach ball than a multi-ton armored vehicle. If a tank from your squad runs into you, your tank is bounced off the ground or spun around like a beach ball. In one mission I was bounced into a mine field and blew up. In the D-Day mission, the Sherman rolls over easily at the slightest slope of beach. Third, the tank treads are not animated. Let me also summarize every mission: Shoot waves of enemy tanks. Expect anti-tank guns to ambush you around every corner. Find health. Find ammo. Repeat endlessly. If you are looking for strategy or variation this is not your game. Gameplay gets really tedious, especially in Dunes of War. It becomes a question of "Can I find health?" not "How can I out-think my enemy?" It's a shame really because the graphics are not bad. The voice actors are pretty good. The historical vignettes with old movie footage are pretty good too. Gameplay is OK. There are no on-screen instructions in Dunes of War so play Fields of Glory first so you learn the keyboard commands. I am still looking for that magic, amazing, well-conceived tank game you can play over and over. This is not it.

This game has a lot of good qualities, but many of them are nullified by the utter crap that is the AI and lack of diversity in gameplay.

Many of you will enjoy the feel of commanding your own tank force, as well as knowing that your air force are fighting furiously in the skies above you, and I good thing to notice is that the skybox literally looks almost like real sky.

However, know that every main gun you get behaves the exact same way, such as my 20mm Kwk having the exact same effect as a 75mm Kwk. Every shell also appears to be HE, which is something that drives me away from liking the tank combat.

From what I can tell, the part of your tank that a shell hits has an effect on how much damage you take. However, many times the AI tanks will charge you, then immidiatly turn around, exposing their engine (which is a 1-shot kill) and running away.

It's worth noting that in-game models seem to be made with care, as I was quickly able to distinguish a ZiS gun from a PaK gun. You can also see the differences between infantry models, as well as the weapons they carry. The tank models, however, look made in a 640x400 resolution. Seeing as how the game can run in 1366x768, they just plain look ugly.

The missions aren't very diverse. It's always a mix of "kill everything that moves," "go here," and "don't die." Thus the game gets boring very quickly. The few siege missions are set up very, very poorly. They allow you to camp around your repair and ammo supplies and kill the oncoming enemies as quickly or slowly as your little heart desires.

Overall, this isn't necessarily a bad game, but it's most certainly not a good one either.

I had this game years ago on my dual core windows xp machine, true the Tiger tanks turret is not rendered so I zoom in and use FPS style views. Will steam please do a fix for this as the Tiger Tank is my favourite.

Don't buy if you have Windows 7/8, this game is not compatible with these OS.
Tracks don't move and the tank are poorly rendered, they glide on the terrain wreaking any immersion.
I have the boxed version of Fields of Glory and Dunes of War was tempting, I bought the game again but the immersion is broken.

AI is bad and some missions are poorly built, however the pleasure was in driving and battling tanks. Now even this is lost.

Update
- tracks don't move
- no turrets on Tiger tanks, you drive them for a few missions, and later you'll fight a lot of them - no one has a turret
- bumping into another tank makes your tank spin round and round
- walls fliker during the Stalingrad missions
- Sherman tank overeturns at the slightest left or right turn, you have to stop the tank, turn, and then move forward

This game should not be sold without a warning.

Enigma

Tanks - Check
Tanks that appear to be made out of lego - Check
Tanks with painted on tracks that don't move - Check
Tanks that seem to weigh next to nothing - Check
Tanks that bounce off of everything in the world and do gnarly 360 degree spins - Check

Overall if you like looking at the back of a tank while the tracks slide along the ground.
Whilst the cannon you are aiming at the enemy.....doesn't aim at the enemy.
Whilst listening to terrible voice acting
And liberally topped with graphics like a 90's console game.
This game is for you.

If you like games that are playable and you can throughly enjoy.......
Well you may be better off looking elsewhere.

If you want a shoddy arcade experience akin to the old 3DO Army Men games then this is for you. If you want something fun or even competent look somewhere else. The tank tracks aren't animated so you are essentially floating on the ground and you can powerslide a 30+ ton tank.

It saddens me still to this day that there aren't very many Tank Sims in the market at all and this is always my favorite. I played through it originally when it was on CD and other than some minor annoyances, mainly having to do with the game thinking it was an illegal copy it still holds considerable ground. It's groovy man.

I thought this would be more like Panzer Elite. I'm guessing the creators were counting on that. The turret model rendering for the Tiger Tank is broken, meaning no turret graphic when you're driving the Tiger. (maybe this won't apply to you?)This game would be fun but the physics of driving the tank are very poor. The Pz II in FoG is so hard to drive, it is almost unplayable at points. Since the physics are off, the tank driving is "unique" at best, and the "Tiger Bug" has no patch or any ETA on one, I'll have to give this 2 stars. No something I would recommend for fans of WoT, Pz. Elite, etc.

This game was one of my favourite games of my childhood and I loved it, so you can imagine my surprise/excitement when I saw it on here. My eagerness to play an old favourite quickly turned to dismay. The model details in this version are shocking (tracks aren't even animated ffs) compared to how they were on the original version I played all those years ago. I don't know why this version is so different and disappointing. 2/10 childhood fave ruined.

After the awesome that was Panzer Elite, the addition of the work "Action" to the title is a sad step backwards.

The missions are very linear and very repetitive, with no opportunity for long range spotting or gunnery for the most part or room to maneuver, but it doesn't matter. The enemy AI will blindly and foolishly charge you with a suicidal enthusiasm and their tanks never seem to be a match for yours.

All the cool penetration and damage mechanics are gone, replaced by a simple hit point style system.

There is no system for modifying your vehicles and repairs and rearming are arcade-ish.

If you want a light game that requires no thought and happens to feature armor this might be good for a few hours of distraction. If you are looking for something like the original Panzer Elite, you might consider something more along the lines of T34 vs. Tiger.

Panzer Elite Action Gold Edition, the one you will actually get, is a totally different game from Panzer Elite, the one you are able to see on the store page. (For example, track in screenshot seems able to move but become just a pair of fixed blocks in the game.
The shortage of this game which I found had already been written in comments by others so I am not going to repeat them again.

If Panzer Elite is a game between good and fair, in my opinion, Panzer Elite Action Gold Edition would be bad for sure.

I played the original Panzer Elite upon release and even purchased the re-release as there are not many Tank Simulation games.
This Panzer Elite Action Gold Edition is not a Tank Simulation game either.
The game play here is exceedingly simple. You drive along, you shoot at the enemy in a very arcade style manner.
The voice acting is not bad, and there's an attempt to make you feel you are part of a tank crew.
The main, and unforgivable problem, is the physics are absurd. Your tank can't go up an incline, you will roll over your tank so often, the game actually has built in code to flip your tank back upright automatically. You aren't rolling your tank because you approached an angle incorrectly, but because you turned on flat ground too fast and rolled your tank over. Your squad will also accidentally ram your tank and flip you over.
You can run over any tree in existence and barely slow down, but you can't travese the smallest of steps.
I finally had to stop "playing" to see if it could get any better, when my force of tanks was spread out and we were being attacked (as usual) by overwhelming numbers of enemy tanks (that never do anything other than drive straight toward you, then turn to create rear kill shots) and one the tanks in my group clipped me, that bounced me into another one of my units tanks, which bounced me into another one of my units tanks, which bounced me into another tank, and because I'm not driving forward, all the tanks stop, so my command tank is literally bouncing around like a pinball off of one tank to another tank, while spinning like a made top.

If I didn't pay 3$ (sale) I would ask for a refund. It is that bad. Does not feel like a tank game, u drive and shoot but it all feels very boring. Panzer Elite Action is basically leveraging the existing assets and engine, but making an action game out of it, and while Panzer Elite is an anthentic WW2 tank sim, PEA is an action title that had you blasting dozens and dozens of tanks during a single mission, not to mention infantry, antitank guns, and more.

As this is action title, you get a third-person view, and you drive with the keyboard while aim with the mouse. Unfortunately, dualstick is not possible, as this is an older title. (If you have Xpadder, use it to emulate keystrokes) And you get bases on the screen that can refill your ammo or repair your damages. If you get killed, you can respawn at the last checkpoint, which is pretty frequent so you don't need to repeat a lot of the kills.

You get both German, Russian, and American action, with the tanks, and there are even AI teammates to help you, and generally AI teammates are very good in assessing threats and eliminating them, but they have several weaknesses: they don't do anti-air (and you need to use your coax MG for anti air in several missions) , they don't do long distance shooting (whereas you can), they don't know how to use a repair depot (you can order them to if you're close), and they cannot do destruction (i.e. take down a windmill as per objective). Try not to let them die, as playing alone is sometimes rather painful. There are some missions where you suddenly lose control of your AI team mates and you need to go at it all alone, which can be a bit scary at first.

Beyond that, squad controls are simplistic: forward sweep, or group formation. Pressing each command repeatedly will toggle through some options such as pincer, scout, attack, and wedge, line, column and so on.

As this is a tank, you can choose to do EASY DRIVING, which lets you steer toward the turret aim (but only if you are moving forward or backward), and left/right still means turn / strafe, or use the WASD keys to maneuver the tank independent of the turret.

The mini-map will warn you of approaching forces, and/ or defenders if you are attacking, but just general vicinity, not exact position. You do have binoculars for scouting and if available, call in air support for some bombardment.

So while the action is still fast and exciting, there is some tactical component to it, such as taking the high terrain, flanking the enemy, engage at range, and so on.

The AI isn't so bright, as they rely on rush and ambush, but they can be a challenge on higher difficulty levels and on tight levels such as Stalingrad, where you get ambushed left and right. Fortunately, the depots are available quite frequently and you can always backtrack a long ways to repair and rearm if needed.

All in all, the game is rather fun to play, if you can get it working. It seems the bink libraries included doesn't work right on Windows 10. Disabling the BIK files seems to allow the game to run properly. If it's for a few dollars, it is worth a couple hours of your time.

TIE Pilot

Fun game but could be better. Make the campaigns longer would be nice, also some more info on how to command tanks with you. Throwing in some "what if" scenarios would be great as well. In other words, if I win at Stalingrad as Germans, make some more missions for that campaign. Also playing with a Tiger sux because depending on the version of windows you have, you wont have a turret.

This is a pretty good tank simulator of ww2 i mean theres no inside veiw and it is arcade like as far as re arming and refueling and repairing damage there a supply dump where you drive up to it hit a button and resupply etc but other then that the missions are beleivable and the feel of it is good and controls handle well with arrow and mouse movement its defintly a fun a big game well worth the purchase in my opinion.

2007 game, yet tracks and wheels don't move and other graphical anomalies appear, that on newer operating systems after Windows XP, even when the store page clearly states Windows 7 and above are supported, this is a known bug, affecting many, and nothing has been done about it, also PEA.exe crashes many times and intro and in-game videos might stop working.

Pure and utter scumbaggery! If you can't or don't want to update a game for newer sytems, don't advertise it as such, don't lie and mislead people, nothing but a a scam if you don't game on a now ancient and unsupported OS like XP.

It took 13 years, but someone finally oiled the damn tank treads!

Yeah, give or take it’s been over a decade since I first played this game, albeit under questionably ethical means due to me being a broke teenager, I have to say it was refreshingly nostalgic to play this game with the right fixes( hell, even the invisible Tiger turrets got fixed)! But does this arcadey tank Simulation (and I say that with massive air-quotes) still stand the test of time or am I just looking at this with massive rose-tinted glasses?

Yes and no! Allow me to explain!

Panzer Elite Action follows 3 campaigns that takes the player through some of the largest tank battles to ever occur in the European Theater during WWII. Astonishingly, the characterization of each tank crew is deeper then teenage-me could have anticipated when I first played! The German tank is led by a blunt but caring middle-aged captain who grows to treat his subordinates like kind-hearted school boys, the Russian tank crew is led by a bright-eyed farmboy who along with his squad enjoy lambasting Stalin and the Communist party from the safety of their tank and the last campaign features a Cynical Drifter who slowly develops friendships with his high-strung brothers in arms. Their banter is better written then it has any right to be considering how blunt the gameplay is and I found myself avoiding combat at times just to hear their banter, even if some of their characteristics are one-note at times!

But above all else, Panzer Elite Action is a tank game. You aim, you shoot, you drive from point A to point B and try not to die. Simple, easy to remember. Unlike any other tank simulation on steam, this game is super straight-forward and beginner friendly. Gameplay isn’t very deep but by golly is it filled with crap to blow up. I’m serious, you fight thousands of tanks by the end of the game and at some points the game feels more like Serious Sam then a tank game!

And this gameplay hook is where you will either love or hate this game.

You see, there isn’t much beyond this. Go here, go there, blow shit up, rinse and repeat. You can call in air strikes occasionally and can command a squad in some missions so if that’s your bag like mine, well, kick back, don’t think much and have a ball. But be prepared for some issues.

For one, the difficulty is uneven. Many times there are straight up kill-zones on harder difficulties so you have to be extremely nimble… in a tank! Speaking of which, while you do have a large variety of tanks at your disposal, some of them are top heavy and roll like SUV’s if you take them over hills, which the game thankfully rights you upright if you get stuck but they also bounce around unevenly and I was punted into direct enemy fire by my own squadmates a frustrating number of times!

Bug-wise, many folks have had issues both graphical and stability wise. There are fixes for some of the more glaring issues, such as the issues I mentioned above that made Panzer Elite Action somewhat infamous but your mileage may significantly vary with newer Operating Systems.

Yet, here I am, recommending this game. The graphics were lackluster even for the time of it’s release and the tank physics are just as arcadey as the action, yet the atmosphere is fantastic, the sheer tank destruction is off the charts and the levels are gargantuan in size. It may be a cheap relic from a time long past but hot damn is it a fun mess of a game!

If you are willing to put up with some extra leg-work to get Panzer Elite Action up and running, then give her a go! It’s basically Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor and you know what? There ain’t anything wrong with that. Steam has enough Tank Simulators, time to kick back with a few beer’s for a change!

Damn this is fun. Not to be confused with a simulation it is rather a cinematic depiction of tank warfare.
The controls are a bit funky. Both A & D cause the tank to turn so it is easy to swing in a complete circle whether you intended to or not.
And then the mouse turns the turret. Between the two you can be facing the wrong way and swinging wildly to line up a shot.
.
One thing I would "correct" is not being able to fire when you have the binoculars up.

freyman

it's not simulation (far from it), this is not strategy, a simple shooter where you drive a tank (or lead tank platoon), the physics are sometimes laughable, the game has issues on post-XP systems, but if you can get it cheap it is really worth it - a lot of fun

borderline

Panzer Elite Action is about an uninspired and thoroughly mediocre as you can get. Where do you start?

Every single vehicle feels exactly the same, which is to say, they all feel like RC cars made out of polystyrene. If you collide with anything, you tend to bounce off like a beach ball. You can flip them easily. They spin like they're driving on ice. There's a basic third person camera, no gunner optics, no interior views, nothing.

There are no shell types, and only two weapons; cannon (LMB) and machine-gun (RMB) which operate and sound identical no matter the vehicle. There are no ballistics, no shot drop, but there is random spread, so it's entirely random and not remotely skill based. A legitimate tactic in this game is just to charge forward, since the enemies can't hit you and you can fire accurately at full speed. You can cheese every mission this way. Very historically accurate!

Missions are linear, restrictive in playable space, and dull. Half the time I just charged forward and shot anything that wasn't friendly, and that was all I needed to do.

I wouldn't call it an ugly game, but it's crazy to think this was released the same year that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Gears of War released. The tracks aren't even animated -- the previous Panzer Elite game from 2001 had animated tracks! It obviously looks dated now, but even judged by the standards of the time, this is a pretty graphically unimpressive game.

There's just nothing here to sink your teeth into. There's no challenge whatsoever. You don't have that fun of learning to control the vehicle, learning how the weapons work, mastering and getting better at controlling a tank.

Go over to GOG, and pick up the original Panzer Elite instead. It's cheaper, and it's an actual tank game, not an iPhone game, like Panzer Elite Action feels like.

It doesn't work on Windows 10. How this game is still 10 dollars beats me.

Not a bad game given how old this is.

I was able to get this to run on windows 10 by changing the compatibility settings to XP service pack 3 and setting DPI settings to application, then checking disable full screen optimizations.

despite having "14 hours" on this game none of which have been spent playing because it won't load and i need to restart my computer for steam to shut it down

This is a terrible game. And even though it went gold for some strange reason. It's far from that. My experience with both games left me shaking my head on 7 and 10 when after a few seconds on the main menu, the game would lag or minifreeze every several seconds for as long a 4 second intervals. There exists no articles for such terrible performance lags, and I'm left guessing that maybe the game is constantly searching for a controller i do not own, (Come on, I'm a pc player), or it just doesn't like my 3090. (I couldn't even get out of the main menu for a chance to enjoy it.) So with adeux, this game is made of the brown stuff. It is a broken product only few can or would have the patience to enjoy. Wait for Tank Squad if you're looking for that singleplayer (Not WOT) experience..

The Game doesn't run on windows 10 from build 2004 onward, no dev or community fix, had to install windows 8.1 on a partition I created specifically for this game, my laptop didn't like windows 7 for some reason and not all drivers exist for windows 8.1 on my laptop which is why I don't have WiFi, the dedicated GPU causes the fan to spin non stop so I'm using the iGPU (UHD 630) which uses an unsigned driver since no official driver was released for windows 8.1 though it runs at 1080@60fps so ....yeeeee....I guess?

And for some reason, I can't find a way to play the Dunes of war expansion so ...Yaarrrr

I paid $1 or $2 for this game when it was on discount which even someone like me in a third world country consider cheap, so I don't plan to refund it in hope that someone fixes the game someday.

So, here are the hoops that you have to jump through if you want to play this game, it's not worth getting it at full price considering all the hustle it takes to make it run, so better wait for a discount or a fix.

This is not working for me under Windows 10, and I haven't found a fix for it, don't buy if you're using newer operating systems. I hope this comes out on GOG at some point in a fixed version that properly works (they almost always do a better job making retro games work on modern OSes).
