You know how you have those early access games in your list that you completely forget about until one day you think "oh hey i wonder if that game is done yet"?

Well, 10 years on since the original release and the last small update made about 4 years ago, I think it's time I give it a thumbs down.

Turns out it's an abandoned project.

Please remove the option to purchase.

The game's big feature of dynamic randomly generated scares has been done much more successfully in games like Phasmophobia leaving little to any value of this past it being yet another underwhleming abandoned Steam Greenlight relic

Paranormal is a first person, "found footage" style game where you play as artist Mattel Clarke. Mattel has been witnessing strange events in his house, and has come to believe it is haunted. In an attempt to capture his findings, he sets up video cameras all around his house and utilizes a handheld camera for capturing POV shots.

Now, Paranormal was one of the first games that I ever bought on Steam. Back in 2012, the game looked promising and interesting, and I also had no concept of "Early Access" since I was new to PC gaming. Back then, the game had significantly less content than it does now... however, it has also been in Early Access for almost five years. There is only one guy working on the game, which is why the development process is taking an excruciatingly long time. On the flip side, after almost five years, you would expect a game of this caliber to be nearing completion; on the contrary, Paranormal is far from it.

Instead of finishing the game as it was, and then working on an upgraded version, the developer decided to put the entire project on hold while he transferred the content to Unreal Engine 4. In the base game, you walk around and try to trigger paranormal events. Once your camera battery is nearly drained, you head back to bed and see the cameras set up around the house; you're able to flick through them in an attempt to catch more spooky activity. Once you wake again, usually something, or rather multiple things, in the house has changed. You rinse and repeat the process until you come to an ending. It took a solid year for anything more than one or two endings to be added, and initially Paranormal was only about 10-20 minutes long, per playthrough.

Now, the newly added portion of the game is all done in Unreal 4. It has awesome visuals, great voice-overs, it's set prior to the events in the base game, and it supposedly has some pretty cool paranormal events. Unfortunately, I couldn't get that far in my play of the new content for one reason; the head bobbing is so atrocious that I seriously felt like I was going to be ill. I'm not a person who gets motion sickness at all, but I seriously had to stop playing after about 10 minutes. If this is taken out, or at least made an optional feature, I feel that the experience for some people would be a lot better. Likewise, there is still some optimization that needs to be looked at, as I did find my framerate fluctuating between 40-60 quite consistently.

The reason that I cannot recommend Paranormal at this time is, to be quite honest, I personally feel like we will never see the finished product. The developer has a lot of work to do by himself, and he has a busy life that draws him away from working on the game quite often. There's great potential to be had here, and I'm extremely hopeful that one day there will be a finished product. Until I see this game nearing release, with more of the content tied together, I can't give this one a thumbs up. If you don't mind investing in Early Access titles that are going to take a long, long time to come to fruition, go ahead and pick it up. Otherwise, just hold off for a while. I'll be updating this review at various intervals of the games lifespan, however there has been no update for over half a year at this time.

Rating: 3.0/5.0 - Average, can take it or leave it.

Very good! I played this when it was fairly new about 3 years ago and the progress that has been made is incredible! The scares are really good and you just never really know what's gonna happen each day. I would give 9/10!

Paranormal is an early access game with a ton of potential. Basically a haunted house simulator, you get two versions of the game: 1 that's a short stand alone game 2 the bigger game still being worked on. Both have a fair amount of scares and enough storyline to keep an EA game interesting.

Also the developer has been incredibly open to feedback and responsive to discussion posts. It's worth the purchase, but bare in mind it's a one man developing team and there are long periods of time between updates.

8/10 good game, i can see the game going places, places like oculus rift, imagine hearing a box move and turning your head and seeing a box stop moving in vr, and seeing all the jumpscares in 3d. i feel that the jumpscares happen all too fast and should have a very slow build up over time, for example, have either nothing or verry little happen for the first few days and then build up to 1 or 2 jumpscares a day that way people dont get used to expecting jumpscares. mabe u could sleep and wake up to find the ouiji board on the floor or in strange places and then decide to interact with it and slowly go from there. when it gets to the pre-climax mabe one of the wooden dolls could chase you, they seem to be a big fear! thats all i can think of as of now, but all in all a great game with a hopefull future.

There will be two reviews in one on this because of a previous version of the game and the Unreal remake of it.

The previous version is very promising in terms of what the unreal version will produce. Despite the graphics, getting stuck randomly and the look of items and rooms the game was enjoyable. The story was good but due to getting stuck and jumpscares not always appearing or something stopping them the game was harder to complete.

However, I have just completely playing the unreal version just now. Everything that gamers of the original game wanted is getting completely. Although updates are slower than other games, the updates are vast and add whole new details to the game. I appreciate that it now takes a little longer for the scares to start happening which I found enjoyable and likeable, to establish the setting and tension. Even with more scares, the game is really good.
Things to work on are
- The game rapidly drops in frame rate to 60fps down to 12 fps when I go near the fire or there is a lot of light even with light settings turned down
- More scares (that’s coming)
- When answering the phone, the camera battery would often die down very quickly meaning I would have to go to bed. The issue with this is that the audio continues playing and the protagonist continues talking in his sleep
- The SD card capacity reaches full amount and then I don't know what to do with it
- The subtitles at the introduction of the games start were too small and didn't notice them until mid-way through the whole speech.

EDIT: The game now works with your microphone. You can speak to the demon terrorising you!!!!

Other than that would 100% recommend while the game is cheaper and it is good to have an audience voice with a dev that cares.

don't buy this game, it's been on early acces for ages and it doesn't seem like it made any real progress at all since i played it the last time in 2013.

still the same shitty graphics, soundeffects and pretty lame scares, with only a few new things added, like the cringeworthy voice acting on the radio in the garage.

not worth 10 bucks and absolutely not worth your time

July 2017 Update, let's see what's changed... oh... okay...

I'm so sorry it's taking so long to come out with an update, guys. I've been working hard on Paranormal, fighting depression, and being a dad. I can't help but feel like I've let a lot of you down with the very slow updates. I apologize for that. I WILL release an update soon. And it will be great.

Welcome to adulthood kiddo, being a dad is not an excuse to do a piss poor job of finishing what you started, regardless of what Donald Trump does.

April 2020 Update, this guy...

I've not given up. Things are very difficult right now. Paranormal does not bring in money anymore, so I have to prioritize my time accordingly in order to support my family. Updates will come when they're ready. I'm done throwing dates out for when they'll be ready because it's not fair to you guys when I don't meet those deadlines. Stopping the game from being sold would not help in any situation. The game already contains two games, one of which is complete. If me having to take a long time to finish the second game that the single 10 dollar (usually less for most people) purchase contains is enough for you to justify removal from sale, I'm sorry, but I'm just not able to see how.

One of those titles that never leaves Early Access due to upgrading the engine and not working on it. See those sweet gameplay videos, no? That's because there isn't any gameplay. Unfinished, untouched for years.

I downloaded this game and only played it for a couple of minutes... Now, I know what you might be thinking, "How can you write a review with only a few MINUTES under your belt?!" but hear me out! I've played my fair share of scary games. Outlast wasn't as bad as this. Random scary shit happened that made me uneasy. The "I no longer want to play this game because I'm too much of a big crybaby bitch." uneasy. The whole atmosphere was unsettling. I had to put the game down just to catch my breath. I'm totally going to play this game more and hopefully beat it. To all others, I highly reccomend this game! If you can handle it, that is.

John Brown's Ghost!

I've had this game an EXTREMELY long time, the developers missed the boat on these types of games.

I used to be able to play this game, I don't know what happened but I can't anymore it just crashes.
I enjoyed what I got to play.
There's also the issue of the intense visual noise going on, it's not spooky, it sucks and looks shitty.
those reasons are enough to validate my point
maybe they'll finsh the game and maybe they'll figure out how to ake it good, at this point, don't count on it.
made up rating of 6 "squelps" out of a possible 91.

This game is really cool! The concept is awesome and the atmosphere truely frightening. The first couple nights will seem uneventful apart from a few unsettling changes but the game gets super scary as time goes on. I love the paranormal activity feel to the game. A real gem!

THIS GAME IS AWSOME...... The fact ONE persone is making this blows my mind. Early Accsess game are always cool, because the game get better and better. To me I could care less how long it takes them. In fact I love watching games grow and Early Accsess give players the chanse to help and watch a game being built. A game you wate for and just buy takes time too but you dont see it like an Early Accses Game. So, if your getting Early Accsess games then you singh up for a long haul, so dont conplaine.
To the dev keep up the good work you have a really good game going. I say take your time this is yours and thank you for letting me be apart of it. Congrats on all the new life changes dont forget to enjoy that too. I am excited to see what you come up with next.

WARNING: This game has not been updated in over half a year, and the last news was of a delayed/late "major" update; an apology for it being delayed; and a clearly broken promise of more/faster updates. This game is likely another dead Early Access game, and you should not expect further improvements or more content.

Disclaimer aside, this game is suitably creepy for one of the first to jump on the Amnesia "pacivist 1st-person horror" bandwagon. Not the best of the lot, far from the worst though.

Its fun if youre looking for a quick jumpscare. Im excited to see what the creator does with it and admit Im impatient. My only wish is that there were more things to interact with or pick up as opposed to just running around the house and sleeping all the time.....

Update: 7-22-2018

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! It is abandoned!!

An entire year has gone by without any updates. The Developer made a few posts in the forum a couple weeks ago to say the same thing that he has been copy/pasting to his customers for the past 6 years and he has already vanished again.

It is a never ending cycle of him making excuses and then disappearing without ever working on the game. I would NOT recommend supporting someone who has no sense of personal or professional accountability.

Update: 3-26-2018 (6 EFFING YEARS IN EARLY ACCESS)

Save your money until the game is finished!

Spoiler: It probably won't ever be finished so you can safely just avoid this altogether.

Its fun for about 5 minutes, then it gets really fucking boring. This game is also horribly optimized. Youtuber bait if I've ever seen it, and I regret spending 10 bucks on this back in 2011 or whenever I bought it.

Seriously, skip this and watch a bad scary movie, you'd be better off by a country mile.

Soooo... Here's the thing... I want to like this game, I really do.. I love the concept, the story's cool i guess.. but it really needs some bug fixes, i can barely make it passed the white noise title screen of the game without it crashing, and I can't play the two other maps of the game yet, I can only play the house, and it seems to still need work.. Fix it bro, I want it to be good.

I'm not one to write reviews, let alone negative reviews even when I intensely dislike a game, but this particular situtation has been bothering me for awhile, since I really liked the idea and hoped that it would succeed. I'll get right to the point, this game is about as close to being abandon-ware as you can get without the project being offically abandoned and I cannot recommend it to anyone, even for the ten dollar asking price.

I'm not going to accuse the developer of anything malicious, I simply think it was mismanaged.

That said, I fully understand why some people are upset, considering the original early access pitch. When Paranormal first went on sale, it was protrayed as essentially finished. A haunted house sim that would recieve new scares/updates on a regular basis, and it seemed to be going well. Nothing like the current early access pitch, clearly, but there's a reason for that.

Instead of finishing up Paranormal, the developer opted to stop all progress and start over, with a new engine. This would have been fantastic, except for two things. First, it's not what we paid for, and second, the developer did not have the time or resources to actually pull this off in anything resembling a timely fashion. The result has been a game that, despite the very limited premise, has made little progress for three years. There was ONE update in all of 2017 as of this review. As it stands, it's been about five months since that update and the promise of more frequent smaller patches has not been kept.

Stuck in Early Access Hell.

Came out in 2012, with 3 maps total being promised in 2013, which are on the menu screen but over four years later two are still not selectable/playable. More story (and scares) keeps being promised, but has barely changed since launch of early access.

I have had faith in this game, but I truly do not see it going anywhere anymore.

Dr. Ubershadow M.D.
Dr. Ubershadow M.D.

Paranormal is a haunted house simulator. You play as Mattel Clarke, an artist who owns the haunted house. At the time of this review, the game has a day and night where you explore the house, night being the more active time. I liked this game when it first came out, it was a good game with spooky jump scares. But the developer promised a haunted town to explore, 6 years later we're still just exploring the house. The house has been updated alot in this time, but they also updates the screen shakes like in a shaky cam movie which makes me nauseous to play. It's good for some jump scares, but being in Early Access this long and lack of any noteable updates I can't recommend this game. And I give this a 5/10. 6/28/18

This is probably the worst game I've ever bought.. It's 10 Euro, not worth it.. The game doesn't even start properly, it just goes black and exits the game by itself, when I get into the game with some luck, my camera just starts spinning in circles, can't do anything. The other version of the game in the totally different house etc somehow works fine but get's boring after 3 hours.. The game hasn't been updated in a year, not worth your money.

it already but somehow it keep doing the manquinn when i enter day 4 or night 4 and it goes back to the main menu and it needs a new background and needs to be longer and it not very well made at all it kinda boring doing the same thing and it always keeps quitting me back to the main menu and i have to restart the whole thing again

Update May 16th, 2020: Developer admitted on the forums not to care about the game anymore as it does not generate enough revenue for him to care.

Avoid like a plague. DO NOT BUY THIS. DON'T GIVE THE DEVELOPER MONEY FOR SOMETHING HE DOESN'T WANT TO INVEST TIME INTO.
_________________________________________________________________________

Tl:Dr Don't buy this abandoned early access game stuck in alpha stage at best

I'm sorry, i really wanted to like this game. I really do but empty promises can only keep one around for so long. It's been over a year now since the last update. Promises in the patchnotes were made that the game will receive smaller but more frequent updates in the future. That was in July 2017. Not much has happened since. Barely any signs of life from the dev, the only sign of life you'll get is by checking the official paranormal twitter account. There you can see tweets going in and out on a daily basis that have absolutely nothing to do with the game in the slightest but are rather personal...
The dev doesn't even seem to be that active on Steam anymore which raises even more suspicion, if this game is going anywhere or if the dev even cares anymore. There has never been a roadmap of the game, so that leaves the player to guessing and hoping what will happen next, if there is ever going to happen anything in the forseeable future. Communication is next to non-existent and if there is, it's just a copy-pasted message, which makes it all the more frustrating and seem like a punch in the face.

Worst offender in this whole situation is that it's still sold under the early access tag for 10 bucks. The dev doesn't seem to have ANY intention on working on this game anymore, despite it's interesting premise, which is all the more saddening.

Cool concept but execution of said concept has stopped entirely.

Beware. Do not buy this vaporware. I bought this game back in November 2013 it is now February 2019. The developer keeps promising updates that never happen. The few updates that he did do a few years back added nearly nothing to this outdated buggy mess of a game. The story that is pretty much non existent is barely cohesive and could have been written by a 10 year old kid in 5 minutes. The graphics are outdated. I have given the developer YEARS to earn the money I gave him.

Hazode

I bought this game for my 20th birthday. I am now 25 and this game has had less than 15 patches. It's almost the same as it was when I first purchased it, except the developer took the unwise decision to port the entire game over to UE4, meaning he essentially had to start over. Don't waste your money, I forsee this game either dying, being abandoned, or leaving early access in an unfinished state.

UPDATE: A year after I posted this, and still no updates or patches. In SIX years this game has had 13 patches, with the last one being November of 2018. The developer constantly excuses it with issues in his personal life, which sure, fair enough - but he is still trying to sell the game, and still charging money for it. I give this game another year before it's officially abandoned.

Zarok

At this point any "update" seems a year between at best and it seems to be difficult to find what's actually new. Despite promises that it will be finished again and again the game seems somewhat far from ever getting done. Buying early access is always a risk and this game is a clear example of that. Buy this game you may be buying a game that will never get finished and if it does well who knows how long that will take assuming it will even happen at this point. Honestly I'd be surprised if we ever end up with a finished game because it seems no closer to being completed than it was years ago.

Personally I really enjoyed this game. I love everything about it. the idea, the gameplay and the mechainics however there are a few things that i DIDN'T enjoy about the game such as

> Instant death if you approach the entity in the kitchen
> randomly dying after the entity appears in front of your bed
> the randomly locked door? Whats it for? The keys for it clearly on the table next to the door but you can't pick it up.

Good points
> Nice story. Very creative. Not going to spoil it.
> random events. no two playthroughs are the same
>the jump scares were well done and gave me chills

This game is awful. There are two versions. The "original" and the alpha version. Both are simply terrible in every conceivable way except the premise itself. The premise is fine. This would be great if it were done by someone who knew what they were doing. The upshot of this though is a pervasive feeling of Baby's First Unreal Game. This is tutorial levels of amateur. It's buggy, the triggers don't always work, the graphics are very bad, the story delivery is often hamfisted. The original's camera is grainy and low quality, the alpha's is shakier than Blair Witch. Even basic things like selecting options is badly designed. It feels like a bunch of assets were downloaded, hooked together badly with stock triggers, then given a once over and set loose on the Steam community. This isn't worth money. The entire experience feels like I'm play testing a new mechanic in an amateur WIP level for a friend.

This has been "in development" for close to a decade.
The developer thinks that he should just rake in money for an unfinished game the entire time and since everybody's already paid for it that he's okay to just give up on it and do other stuff.

He tries to say that "There's two games here and one is finished" but keeps the game in early access so that he has an excuse for how unfinished it clearly is. He'll ask you for $10 in exchange for a finished game and then when you don't give him $10 next week too, he just leaves.

I think it's surprising how much anger there is in the forum about this game not being completed yet. My question is how is the guy even supposed to make a good, fun game when getting flamed so much online in his game forum? If anything that WILL make people abandon their project that was once a labor of love and is now just a chore and a job. This was once a fun game being updated back in 2014, so you could say I've been waiting 7 years for updates, It does seem like it may never get finished so right now I can't recommend buying this game, as it seems financially irresponsible to me, but all that being said I do hope the dev is being sincere and that maybe one day this will still get an update. Either way good luck to everybody out there who reads this, take care because others care about you, even if it seems like nobody does sometimes.

Man what a disappointment, I bought this game back in 2013.
Back then during the golden years the game was good and the dev could interact with us.
Now it's 2021 and I have been waiting patiently for almost 8 years.
I think its safe to say that the dev had abandoned his game.

What irks me most is people will continue to buy this unfinished mess of a game.
For 2021 the price simply isn't worth it for the content you get, STEAM please change this price to $1

from all the discussion this game seems to be dead (last update from dev was over a year ago). save you money and play Visage or Infliction

I bought this game in like 2013 I think? I played it today in 2021 and it still takes me back. I'm still waiting for the full release of this game and I understand what has happened to the developer over the years (I believe in you man, this game is still good). It is still pretty fun to play and I do recommend people play this if they like spooky stuff.

When I first got this game, it was so promising. It was spooky and had a lot of randomization and interesting events. Sadly the developer has moved on from the game so I cannot recommend it any longer. If it ever does get finished then I'm sure it'll be an amazing game though!

The game has been abandoned, simple as that. Don't buy it.

I remember watching Yamimash playing this back in the day, man his videos were the best. Seeing Yamimash play it made me play it, and I don't regret it. It brings back so many memories for me :)

As for the game itself, it's pretty good compared too alot of other horror games out there. I'd still rather play this than modern-day horror games such as Visage etc.

8/10

Abandonware. It's a ten year old game in perpetual Early Access. Even if it wasn't abandoned, it's certainly not worth the asking price.
