It plays a lot like classic Doom, and this is a very, very good thing. Shoot enemies, hit switches, collect keys, open doors, and shoot more enemies. Awesome.

It's got some pretty fluid movement and the controls are snappy. I use this game as a mindless aim-trainer.

it's just kina mid.

it's alright but it doesn't make me use my brain at all.
i was able to play for 45 minutes for my first run without dying once. it looks nice but it's just uninteresting to me.
enemies don't do anything special and just eehhhhh

I don't write reviews, but I was compelled to in this one case to get this off my chest. I love this game. I love the weapons, I love the maps, I love the feel of it, the soundtrack, the over the top gore, all of it. Of all the shooters aiming for an older style of play, this is one of my favorites. Easily up there with Dusk, Amid Evil, and Ion Fury. I'd say it actually feels closest to Doom 2016, minus the glory kills and gun side-grades. It's everything I want out of this genre. But I just can't recommend it. It has, in my opinion, an absolutely fatal flaw. The lack of a checkpoint system.
In place of real save points it has what it calls nexus points, and what they do is act as safety nets that bring you back to life when you die. They have unlimited uses. You can die in this game, but you can't lose. You do have one other option and that's to restart the level, but these are large levels. 20 minutes at least. All progress and found secrets will be lost. It's awful. You can feel all the wind go out of your sails when you die at no cost. All the enemies you killed are still dead. There's no retrying an encounter again. It feels pointless, especially at higher difficulties. Why did you even turn the difficulty up? Ever play Doom with God Mode enabled? Gets boring fast and leaves you unfulfilled.
This would be fine if it were just an optional arcade mode where you are going for points, which seems to be the idea behind it. But as part of the campaign? I'm not a masochist. I'm not looking for the game to punish me. You just have to have something. Mario can't just pop back out of the hole he fell in and dust himself off. Never have I ever played a game that was this good that also hurt itself this bad with such a poor decision.

it's like Project Brutality, but with graphics that are simultaneously upgraded in performance, and delightfully retro (8-bit pixelated here and there). So much fun.

It's like if iD had released a doom 3 in early 1996 instead of releasing quake later that year, but somehow found a way to cram in an extra 20 years of really good map design experience. The map design is really the star of the show, it's almost universally EXCELLENT map design. The level design tools and built-in custom map distribution have produced a lot of really good community maps as well.

There are two flaws though. Everyone can see the other reviews discussing the bad checkpoint system that allows for just suicide rushing through a level and punching enemies to death when ammo runs out, so I won't go over that again. But the game ends so abruptly. You get tons of tech-base stuff, then a few onyx cavern levels in the prodean dimension which are also great, then a couple levels that are tech base again but with snow now and a new weapon that kind of sucks and a new enemy that seems to have a bull-fight gimmick but is really just "shoot it until it dies", and then one level in the chaos dimension that serves as the game's only bad level, followed a final one-room box of a boss arena. The last three tilesets (prodean, ice base, chaos) are woefully underutilized and the game's ending feels incredibly rushed and underwhelming as a result.

But... I really want to emphasize, the level design in the tech-base and prodean areas is really, really good and absolutely worth playing. Interesting central concepts to every one of those levels that make them all feel unique. Even if the reported followup free additions by the devs never materialize, you'll still have a wealth of great community maps and campaigns to play too.

Now THIS is a shooter. If you are a fan of Doom, Shadow Warrior or Wolfenstein this game will exceed your expectations. I cannot recommend this game highly enough.

War Fever
War Fever

This game is, without a doubt, the most fun first person shooter I ever played. The weapons are great with chunky sound effects, the splatter of dying enemies is viscerally satisfying and the short, punchy levels are a joy to play through. Fast paced action with just enough tactical thought needed to make it interesting but not tedious. It's such a relief to play a game that's fun from the get go instead of spending the first few hours upgrading your kit until its fun. And no endless stream of boxes to open either. Old school shooting with modern visuals (or old school visuals, if that's your kink).
A triumph.

This game is everything right about the old school FPS games, but it just runs smooth and plays well on new machines. It is absolutely a diamond in the rough for any 90s kid who misses the run and gun fun of Doom, Shadow Warrior or Duke Nukem 3D.

For all the young kids out there, give this a try. Its brutal, straight forward and fun. Play it, Beat it, Master it. Learn what it was like in your parents day playing games. They were hard, and they required you to develop your FPS skills. This faithfully recreates that feel.

I love boomer shooters and Prodeus is exteremely well made and very very fun, but let's not lie to the people here. This isn't finished. This is basically Episode 1. The campaign is super short with only a handful of enemy types and about 5 hours of content. 4 of the weapons aren't even unlocked in the campaign and it ends on a cliffhanger. The community workshop and multiplayer certainly add some bang for your buck, but when you announce a "full release" we expect a full release, NOT "DLC levels" that I hope we don't have to pay separate for. Regardless, the game itself is fast, fluid, fun, violent, addictive, and completely unoriginal. I'm sorry, I get this genre is referred to as the "Doom clone" genre, but even clones had something unique to them. Prodeus is straight up Doom 2016 almost to a T. From the weapons, to the enemy types, to the movement abilities you have to slowly unlock for some reason, to the metal soundtrack, this game has very few distinct qualities. I think it was a bad move to copy this hard since at the end of the day, it's just not as good as Doom 2016. I just think there are much better boomer shooters available now that are longer, cheaper, much more original, and actually finished like Forgive Me Father, Amid Evil, Ion Fury, or Dusk. There's also much more on the horizon currently in early access that are just better even in an unfinished state like Ultrakill or Selaco. It's a solid shooter, don't get me wrong, but it's not really a FULL game and doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from its much better influences. I give it a 6/10.

Bought on a whim and have for sure been enjoying my time playing. I can only play 1-3 levels at a time cause it's just not my kind of game for the most part but I am having fun with it.

Def a combination of Doom 2016 and Retro Doom, fast paced, good combination of guns, exciting gameplay. My only real complaint is that your fists don't deal a lot of damage so I haven't used them once. I don't have any issue with the current checkpoint system because I rarely die on Medium difficulty.

I don't have nostalgia for this type of game cause I didn't grow up with it but I still really enjoy the fast chaotic gunplay this game offers. For $25 the amount of levels to play make this a must buy if you enjoyed Doom and similar games.

While Prodeus may lack depth, it doesn’t really need it. It is unashamedly a style-over substance experience and excels at exactly that. If you want a mindless, punchy, retro shooter experience with excellent level design then you can’t go wrong with Prodeus.

I'm really enjoying this game so far. It's like Doom II on steroids. The action is quick, the weapons are cool. The graphics are an interesting mix. The music is good. Sometimes it gets a little heavy and stressful...sort of a Doom Eternal vibe. Overall, this is a great game and the value is good. I would recommend, especially if you like fast action shooters with no hiding. Only downside is that some of the level seem a little bit like a chore to get through, but in the end, it's not too bad. There are plenty of secrets to go back and find too.

Where Prodeus excels is… everywhere but one area. But first and foremost, it’s beautiful combat. I haven’t seen such orgasmic explosions of blood ever before in my life. This games shotgun’s could rival the spas from FEAR. It’s enemies, setting, and story are ultimately forgettable but it makes up for it with the sheer satisfaction you get from killing enemies as well as the abundance of unique weapons at your disposal and the game’s progression system of secret hunting for currency tied to these weapons. So why the negative review? This game has a fundamental flaw. It’s fucking abhorrent checkpoint system. I literally don’t understand how people can forgive this or how the devs thought this was fine. Upon death you are essentially sent back ten feet and given full health with no consequences other than perhaps a short jog. All the enemies you killed are still dead. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea? I’m not saying every single game needs to be a fucking Ultrakill Prime Sanctums. The game doesn’t even have to be hard. But how the hell am I supposed to enjoy something that offers literally zero challenge whatsoever? I did overall enjoy my time on Prodeus but I think this flaw just cannot be overlooked. Hopefully somehow someone will mod in a manual save or proper checkpoint system. Until then… Prodeus is like a 6/10.

This game is basically what you would have expected Doom 3 to be if it didn't go the survival horror route. Quick twitchy shooting with a great variety of guns (I honestly use all of them which is rare in a shooter). Levels are great, putting a good variation between quick 8-10 minute massacres, to longer 30 minute levels where you're doing the key card to unlock the next zone things.

Oh, and the music is top notch. Really adds to the whole game.

From a guy who hasn't played an oldschool shooter in god knows how long, I really recommend this. I forgot how fun these types of games can be.

Gunplay, atmosphere, music and graphics are great. But whats the point of 6 difficulty settings whatsoever, when you just spawn with full health, ammo (maybe not that) and everything you killed is dead. I got bored pretty quick because of this. There is no challenge at all. I was looking forward to this game for some time, so its quite disappointing.

It's really, really f***ing good.

It takes elements of old and new Doom/Quake/UT, mashes them together and adds a bunch of stuff on top.

Movement is fantastic and fluid.
Graphics are fantastic, especially considering the retro feel.
Guns are punchy and satisfying.
Enemies are a little derivative in places, but still great.
Story is minimal but there if you want it.

Tips:
I've also been playig it on and off with my SteamDeck. If you're like me and have zero aim ability with a game-pad, fear not! There's an aggressively good aim assist included.
I prefer to turn on the 3D models and "Always Sprint" in the menu. Ramp that FOV all the way up. You'll feel like you're going 300mph.

It's a Doom-Quake-Duke Nukem-System Shock-Thingamagiger.
Playes like a 90's shooter with horror-ish elements, a nice brooding atmosphere and a great soundtrack.
Built on Unity, looks like Duke Nukem 3d/ Shadow Warrior from the 90s, but plays very much like a modern shooter.

So basic graphics that you'll max out even with a potato card like a 1050 that I have on an old laptop, giving you a gamplay loop straight out of an old school proper shooter.

If you grew up in the 90's playing FPS games, you will love the hell out of this.

Great game!

Buttery smooth and fluid movement with cathartic combat happens while a great sound track plays along.
Campaign is a fair length and is fun both solo and in glorious co-op too.
Creative and old school map design really speaks to me with this title. Plus it has some replay value with the challenges and difficulty levels available.
Workshop maps and campaigns are available if this wasn't enough for me.
Great job Bounding Box, thanks!

Very enjoyable. Of all the "boomer shooters" I've played, this is by far my favorite. Feels great. Sounds great. Has an old-school aesthetic, but still looks very nice. Love the level design. Keeps things moving forward, and never feels like you are just moving from one arena to the next.

The best way to summarize Prodeus is this: if you don't like where DOOM4/Eternal took the franchise but you want a new DOOM game - this is the one.

Prodeus feels very DOOM-like, more so than any other recent retro shooter out there. The gameplay is fantastic. It's simple yet the complexity creeps in as new enemies and weapons get introduced - just like in DOOM. It feels like all of its gameplay elements are in sync - every enemy plays its role, every weapon has a purpose (well, almost, but at least the majority of them). There are some newer additions like dash and double jump but they do not detract from the simplicity. Interestingly both of those abilities are optional though they do help a lot in dodging incoming fire.

The visual aesthetics of Prodeus are exquisite. Much like Amid Evil it rocks big, chunky, unfiltered textures but with the addition of modern effects such as reflections. For some reason this style really works for me, it's a very good combination. However unlike Amid Evil this game has much better special effects. Not just on textures but in general. Explosions, smoke, transparency, blood - it's all fantastic. The game also uses post effects to make 3D models look like sprites which gives them a unique flavour.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the combat. Weapons are fun to use, enemies die in satisfying ways and the overall flow of the combat feels really nice. At first some situations may seem a bit overwhelming but the game is surprisingly fair if you get in sync with it.

Prodeus also does something that I really like - it features some deliciously overpowered weapons. Essentially you can get guns that are clear upgrades from earlier ones: Swarmer replaces the Rocket Launcher, Mammonth does the same for Arc Rail. However the game is perfectly playable without them. So if you want an extra challenge, you can skip them and hone your skills. But if you prefer to just have fun and blow things up - you can go crazy with those and unleash some impressive mayhem upon your enemies.

The level design is very competent. Levels range from good to fantastic and they're all fun to play. There's a mix of regular exploration and setpieces with plenty of secrets to find. The only problem is that the game is mostly set in metal techbases and the biggest changes of scenery happen very late into the game. It's not exceedingly monotonous but having the classic three episodes, each with a separate theme would have helped a lot. Thankfully the devs are working on the DLC so there's hope for more variety down the road.

The campaign itself features a neat worldmap that you travel through - sometimes you can take a detour through a weapon trial map or a shop where you can buy upgrades with Ore scattered throughout the levels. Maps can be replayed so if you miss something you can always play it again.

So what's bad about the game? I wish there was a bit more variety in level themes. Would be nice if there were no points of no return, especially in cases where they make no sense. Some people complain about the lenght but it took me over 20h to beat it so there's that. The save system is rather strange - checkpoints bring you back to life but do not reset the progress back to when you activate them so you're essentially invincible. I don't care about that too much because when I die I just restart the map but for a more casual playthrough it sort of trivializes the game. It also makes practicing difficult fights troublesome because to replay the fight you have to play the level again. There are also some options that should be toggable but they're not - like the amount of blood (which is a bit ridiculous and distracting) or that strange shadow outline on the edges of the screen. I guess I would have liked to get a bit more story in some form. Also the music is your typical generic "Andrew Hulshult metal" and I didn't care for most of it (the good tracks are Decay, Cables & Chaos and Technological Terror).

Other than that I enjoyed Prodeus quite a lot. I'm looking forward to future content from the devs and I will also have to check out the community levels. The game features what is supposedly a very neat level editor and downloading custom maps is easy so that should extend the longevity of the experience.

Very good game, my only gripe is when trying to find all of the secrets or enemies, you have to play several levels over and over due to levels blocking backtracking.

Fantastic old school style shooter. Controls as well as the modern Doom games. Pixelated 3D levels look great with modern effects, particles and lighting. Enemy character models look awesome and are fun to shoot especially when they rip apart and spew blood everywhere. And anyone not using the 3D sprites over the 3D models for enemies are doing a massive disservice to themselves. The only real negative I have is that the game could have used a little more variety when it comes to environments.

Chinosky
Chinosky

Prodeus is one of those really well-made mixes of retro visuals and contemporary design which as a result gives us a game that feels like a classic, old-school shooter but plays like something they would not have been able to design back then. So the visual side of Prodeus is excellent, the lighting, the weapon designs, the gore, some of the enemies and of course the levels themselves, most of it looks amazing. The music, even though it is not Andrew Hulshult's best piece of work, is pretty banging and the amount of levels as wells as their length is satisfying. The movement (especially after getting all of the upgrades) feels slick and responsive, the shooting and reloading sound and feel meaty and fulfilling and the choice of weapons is vast enough (but there are still a couple of weapons missing from the roster and I am not sure when the developers are planning to add them in). The levels are varied and most of them feature arenas where you are allowed to be creative with your approach towards combat instead of playing in a run-of-the-mill cover-shooter style. Even though, the gameplay loop of Prodeus is pretty damn fun it does have some critical flaws which would have been enough for me to give this a mixed review rating if i were able to, however it doesn't warrant a thumbs down in my opinion. So the elephant in the room, as everyone who played this game knows i am sure, is the nexus point system which allows you to respawn after death without resetting the enemies, meaning, every time you die if you at least kill 1 enemy, the fight is getting easier. That design choice ruins the sense of reward for people who want challenge in games like these and the developers, in my opinion, should have tweaked that mechanic for at least the higher difficulties because at this moment in time, your only alternative is to replay the whole level every time you get killed and on higher difficulties that would completely ruin the experience. What the design choice did for my playthrough is that it basically didn't allow me to get better at the game as there was no punishment for mistakes so the only time I really got good was during the final boss encounter where there are no checkpoints and guess what, that fight was much more fun for that exact reason. I also had a problem with the enemy behavior, they do lead their shots and catch you off-guard but not enough of them really chase you down and try to corner you, so you are weirdly rewarded for playing Prodeus as a cover-shooter quite frequently. Then there's the map which is one of the most cluttered, unclear map designs I've seen for quite a while and then there's the slight lack of enemy variety which is made even more apparent when you realize that most of the enemies are almost exact copies of their obvious DOOM inspirations. I have also heard that some people complain about the reload mechanic being in the game and I do understand why that can be tedious in a game like this but what can I say, it didn't really bother me as much and maybe it was because of the reload animations are so slick and badass, I am not sure. As you can see, there are some really important flaws in Prodeus, however the combat itself feels really fun and most of the weaponry (plus their alt-fire modes) give so many options during combat and on top of that, most of this game filled with some really good level designs and scenarios that you get put in so I just cannot bring myself to give this a thumbs down so I do recommend this game to everyone who is looking for some "boomer-shooter" thrills but I definitely think that Prodeus needs a little bit of an overhaul in some areas.
P.S I tried to play some multiplayer but there was 0 activity on all servers so I didn't bother to look up specific groups in steam communities to try that part of this game out so that doesn't really factor in my point of view. Also a huge thanks to the community for creating custom maps that just function as a means to get certain achievements really easily.

So, Prodeus. I really, really wanted to like it. It's a retro FPS, the weapons are sprites instead of models, and a famous DooM PWAD creator (Xaser Acheron) was a part of the team. By all accounts I should have loved it, but I didn't. Far from it.

The level design was good to great. I was never lost and maps had intuitive interconnectivity that prevented backtracking. There were a few gimmick levels that were a lot of fun, and the sniper tower map is probably the highlight of the entire game.
The weapons are a mixed bag, with shining examples on either extreme. The basic pistol and shotgun feel fantastic and I probably gimped myself for the first half of the game because I had a tough time switching to other guns. The plasma rifle is far and away the best looking, feeling, and most useful gun in your arsenal. The animated sprite gives it character, it evokes the Blood tesla cannon when you shoot it (this is a very good thing), and it's the only weapon half decent at stunlocking things. The super shotgun, on the other hand, is a freaking travesty. It's a QUADBARREL shotgun that feels both weaker and less satisfying than its single-barrel counterpart. The mind boggles. The single shot rocket launcher is fine; remote det feels good. There's also an ice melting weapon near the end of the game that I have nothing to say about other than it reminded me of the alien swarm gun from Half Life 1.
I turned the OST off pretty quick. A mix of it being standard boomer shooter fare and me preferring to listen to death metal whenever I play an FPS at this point.

My biggest gripe is that Prodeus more than overstays its welcome. Steam has me at just under 10 hours for a full playthrough. That's with minimal secret hunting and not replaying any levels outside of the 90 second weapon trial things (they're fun). There's a Super Mario overworld map and tbh if the game was just the first map I think it would have been enough. It's not though, and there's 2 more (admittedly shorter) maps after the first. I want to say there's around 20 levels. It wouldn't be too many if the first 5 or so were bite-sized experiences, but the game very quickly ramps up to 100+ enemies per map that regularly take (or took me) 20+ minutes to clear. FPS of this kin, in my mind, should have levels no longer than 10 minutes outside of set pieces or finales. 4-6 hours would have been much more appropriate.

Prodeus is fine. It's got some high highs and equally low lows. I would happily recommend it as someone's first retro FPS, but if you have any familiarity with the subgenre's tendencies I would say skip it or wait for a good sale (33% off or more).

Fantastic old school style shooter. Love the Mario 3 style level select map. Weapons are all fun to use. Levels are varied and fun. The only thing that sucks is the main menu, it takes like 7 clicks to continue a game.

Man this game is awesome. One of the best modern "retro" shooters I've ever played. It captures everything I loved about the glory days of the 90's shooter genre and adds some modern touches. The graphical effects are really well done, the action is frantic and fast paced. The level design is top notch and there are many secrets to find and unlock.

The sound effects are phenomenal, really showcasing the devastation of your arsenal that sounds as brutal as it looks, ripping your enemies to pieces. Also, those reload and weapon animations are *chefs kiss*

Also, I would like to give MAJOR props to the developers for taking the Unity engine and making not only one of the best games I've played on it, but it's incredibly well optimized, doesn't have any noticeable performance issues and it runs flawlessly. I have played FAR TOO MANY bad Unity engine games and this is a breath of fresh air and other developers TAKE NOTE: This is how you use Unity.

Can't wait to see what they have in store for future updates. Anyone that loves shooters, especially from the DOOM era, just get this game. Pay the full price, and regret nothing.

FIX CHECKPOINT ENEMIES RESPAWN ON DEATH.
(See the Dark Souls bonfire for reference.)

The fact that enemies don't respawn turns the experience from a challenge to a walk in the park.
There is no risk of losing something by dying, on the contrary, dying will help you pass the area easier because the enemies you've already killed won't respawn even if you die, this feels like a level design flaw.

I wasn't sure how to start this one other than asking for the millionth time for Steam to add a mixed rating option.
Prodeus is *fine* the guns are loud and fun to shoot and the enemies blow up good with tons of gore.
Prodeus has an excellent level creator where anyone can make their own level and players can have endless content.
Prodeus is a game I would've adored a decade ago during the dark ages of shooters where your only options were 4 hour military shooter campaigns where 3 of those hours consisted of watching people talk in unskippable scripted events and watching them open doors for you. Back when the release of the completely mediocre Rage and Duke Nukem Forever made it clear how bad the genre had gotten. Back when the options for this type of game were Bulletstorm or Hard Reset which while good still left a lot to be desired. Had it come out back then I could've easily seen myself absolutely adoring this game and finishing it in two sittings like I did with Rise of the Triad 2013 and Shadow Warrior 2013, both games which while quaint nowadays with the resurgence of the so called boomer shooter - which was helped by the popularity of the incredible Doom reboot in 2016 - were a breath of fresh air back then.

Prodeus is also a game where half this review is going to be me talking/musing about boomer shooters in general since that's what it made me start thinking about during my playthrough.

I am writing this in 2022 after playing what feels like a billion of these games. Both finished and in early access - Dusk, Ion Fury, Viscerafest, Supplice, Hedon, Forgive me Father, Project Warlock, whatever else I played that slipped out of my mind the moment I finished it (I just remembered Hellbound while writing this and had to recall the name by checking my own reviews due to how forgettable it was).
Like all of these Prodeus wants you to feel like a badass with your manly character taking on thousands of enemies with loud guns and wanting to make you feel awesome about it. And like most of these once you get rid of the over the top gore and bravado compared to modern games you are left with a very shallow experience. The enemy variety in Prodeus isn't terribly interesting - you basically fight mostly the equivalent of the first Doom's monsters for the entirety of its 4 hour campaign. There's the zombie hitscanner equivalents, the imp equivalent, the pinky equivalent, their buffed nightmare counterparts (but blue) and a pseudo-archvile mini-boss. Also a faux-hellknight that shots up a handful of levels from the end and barely poses any threat whatsoever.

There's also unlockable abilities which due to how the game handles unlocks feel like an afterthought. The game has both a double jump and dash which you can buy from its shop in the hub level once you've bought enough of the weapons you can purchase using special currency found mostly in secrets, but since these are optional and players might never get them they're completely wasted. You'll never really need that double jump for anything since the levels were made without it in mind, you'll never need that dash in combat either since the enemy AI is extremely simple even having played the game on Hard - mostly standing in place to shoot or running towards you (or sometimes the AI glitching and doing nothing or walking past you).

While the act of shooting is very fun, the arsenal is also so-so with half the guns being straight up power upgrades rendering the rest pointless the further you get into the game, with the middle act being especially egregious because the buffed enemies you fight during it make using anything that isn't the plasma rifle, super shotgun and grenade launcher a waste of time. Even when you go back to fighting the "standard" enemies there isn't much of a point in using the weaker weapons, some which slow down your movement or require frequent reloading. Using them to conserve ammo isn't an option either as most weapons share ammo pools, eg. pistol, chaingun and smgs, shotgun and super shotgun, grenade launcher and rocket launcher, etc.
There's one thing of note in that way later in the game there's a gimmick weapon that can melt ice but this gimmick is relegated to the level you get it only, after that you'll probably forget about it as it's too slow at killing enemies and you're better off using anything else.

Prodeus' biggest achievement is that its entire campaign was made in its own level editor and this is also its biggest issue. Since these types of in-game user friendly editors usually can't handle complex geometry too well you can expect most levels to be extremely rectangular or square rooms, so the entire thing feels like a giant advertisement for it.
The campaign also kind of ends. After 4 hours of shooting the same basic enemy types you fought in the first hour the game it throws a boss at you in a small room then kicks you back to the hub with a text message about how the story will continue, as if after years of being in early access the developer though that was good enough and decided to release the game and add more content later - as of this writing there's blank space for more official campaigns in the main menu.

Like I said, Prodeus is fine and fun in a basic way, but once you get past the flashy presentation there's nothing interesting here. The developers of these types of games love classics like Doom and Duke Nukem and also Doom 2016's focus on aggression so they've made these games that celebrate over the top machismo with tons of blood (also from looking at some of Prodeus' art, weapon and enemy design the developer also really likes Killzone), but none of the interesting enemy variety, behavior, weapon balance and (usually) interesting level design from those titles is present in any of these and Prodeus is no exception. You point at dumb enemies and click the shoot button then they die with no skill required. It's entertaining, but at the same time rather than spending money on this or most of these titles anyone's time is better spent buying a copy of Doom 2, downloading gzDoom and playing the thousands of incredible wads made by the talented community which play better than what felt like replaying the original Doom with a Brutal/gore mod.

Solid

It shouldn't be on the top of anyone's wishlist. It's a bit pricy if you're only interested in the singleplayer standard campaign. [list]
• Has a good roster of enemies, goes for quality over quantity, though still the recolored enemies with double health and damage seem cheap;
• Too many weapons I'd say, I started unbinding some to make it more manageable. All of them feel great and have niche uses, but 13 in ammo-sharing packs of 3 is a lot to be switching between in the heat of battle;
• Game was fairly easy even on Ultra Hard and Very Hard, apart from some sections here and there;
• The campaign has a good length and variety. Some people rushed through it in 6 hours, I took 24 by seeking every ore and secret;
• The checkpoint system didn't bothered me all that much. It certainly should've been better programed and it did casualized the toughest encounters, so buyers beware.

Amazing, hard-hitting FPS that ends a bit too abruptly.

I love Prodeus. The gameplay is smooth, fast and intense, the weapons are powerful and meaty, and the level design and progression is fluid and satisfying. However, it does feel like the game just sort of... ends. And right as things are getting REALLY good.

SPOILER ALERT (not that there's that much narrative to spoil):

Once you leave the initial overworld map and head into the Prodeus dimension, the game starts to introduce levels that shift and change as you progress through them, as well as give a bit more insight into the apparent conflict between the Prodeus and Chaos dimensions. Some of that even makes itself apparent in the gameplay as both chaos and Prodeus enemies fight each other before either one winner or another turns their attention to you. Add to that the different classes of energy weapons you acquire throughout, and the game sets the stage for some really amazing gameplay in the later levels that really begin to make you use your entire arsenal and acquired tactics in the moment to moment action.

And then... it just sort of ends. And right as the game begins to really fire on all cylinders (not that it wasn't giving its all before then, mind you). And seeing how the Prodeus energy weapon class has two slots that are still unused, I figure they are preparing those two remaining weapons as future DLC. However, for as good as the game is, and as much as it ramps up in the later levels, it just leaves me wanting more. In a good way, of course, but I do wish it didn't wait until the very end to start introducing even more unique situations for us to play through.

This game is incredible, and I commend the team on their artistry and expertise in crafting this amazing throwback shooter.

BottomOfTheSpiral

Game looks and feels amazing. There's a really, REALLY solid base here. Unfortunately, there is a baffling system in place where the game doesn't penalize you for dying whatsoever. Not sure where the challenge is supposed to come from there. Also, as fun as the multiplayer is, it's dead and there aren't good systems for finding games. You can't even join a game in progress if you do happen to see one, which is laughable as that's been a feature in boomer shooters for decades.

RoosterJuice
RoosterJuice

This game is awesome, but I don't understand the checkpoint system.

It is the same system that Bioshock infinite uses, which is the worst designed death system of all time. You die and literally just respawn infinitely and receive zero penalty. This removes any sense of intensity or care you need to take while playing the game.

As a Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal veteran, this makes the game feel way too easy even on the hardest possible difficulty.

Why not bind this zero penalty system to the easy modes, and create some penalty for the hard modes?

The sound and graphics are absolutely amazing, but the game just doesn't provide enough challenge due to the lame checkpoint system.

Boomer

Prodeus is fun for the first few levels but after that, it quickly becomes boring and repetitive. The enemies are very uninspired Doom clones. Weapon reloading does not belong in this game, you constantly have to reload and it becomes more of a chore than a fun part of the game. On the later levels, too many enemies are placed into a small space and you have very little room to run around and dodge attacks. Also some of the guns are pointless compared to others. For example, the regular shotgun becomes useless once you obtain the super shotgun. It's a decent game but needs a lot of improvements.

This game feels like Doom to me if it didn't have quite the production value of ID's newest titles, but still had the soul and fun factor of them. A huge recommendation to anyone who loves Doom or old-school FPS games. Secrets to be found in every level, slowly upgrading yourself and moving through a SMB 3 style overworld, it's come a long way since EA. The gore is gushing through my screen whenever I step into the fray... its absolutely glorious. 100% worth the price of admission if you're craving more Doom or oldschool FPS.

The game rocks. But it took me a few levels and a fair variety of weapons and enemies to start feeling it.

Combat Pros:
-The movement is fast and I like it. I might go a step further and give players the option to keep sprint on (or maybe I missed that toggle option in the settings).
-I love the fast weapon swap, something I've gotten used to from other recent games.
-I'm used to games without reloading, so this took a minute to get used to. It is a fun challenge to keep track of which weapons have been reloaded amidst quick-swapping. I like engaged combat, so while this game doesn't have CC, grenades, and "glory kills", I need the additional stress of reload management to keep my attention.

Combat Cons:
-The lack of grenades or crowd control. Something that I could do during those moments when I have to reload. Maybe something shoulder-mounted would be cool.

Other Pros:
-The levels are creative and unique (particularly after the first few).
-No fall damage.

Other Cons:
-There could be more enemy variety or update some of their behavior. Like the soldiers with shotguns that seem to lumber around as slowly as the zombies.
-The flashy portal of light when enemies spawn is a bit too long. It feels like an eternity before I can see what enemy it is.
-The explosion of some of these enemies is a bit too big and lasting and can make it hard to see what the other enemies are doing. This only became an issue in the later levels when combat was more hectic.

Production on the game is incredibly slow and updates don't come out often. But what is here I believe is more than worth the money. This game is fast, frantic and adrenaline inducing. It makes great use of colors and feedback when you hit enemies is awesome. The weapons all feel great to use and fire and everything about this game is satisfying. There is also a good amount of levels here and you will probably take you at least a few hours to clear. I'm sad that updates are slow but this also means that when they come out they come out good and polished.

Highly recommend.

I haven't even played this game for a full hour at the time of this review and I can already tell it's fantastic. The visuals and environments alone sold it for me, but being a Doom fan this game is a huge treat for me and I think it will be for many other Doom fans, especially those that like the classics, and other classic shooters. For me personally, I found Doom Eternal a bit overwhelming mainly because of the sheer amount of weapons, alternate weapon modes, power weapons, other offensives abilities, movement abilities, and enemy types. The point is is that it was just a lot and it made the game feel very chaotic and paired with the somewhat convoluted and large environments, it took away from the experience for me, and it's for that reason that I find Prodeus extremely refreshing because its more in line with Doom 2016. Both games pair that classic shooter gameplay with the polish and feel of newer games. They also have similar weapon rosters. The weapons in Prodeus feel extremely good, they are effective and fun to use. I like that in Prodeus already come with their secondary functions if they have one, unlike in Doom 2016 where you have to unlock them over the course of the game. I also like that the weapons in Prodeus don't have multiple secondary functions, which I feel would add needless complexity. One other comparison is that unlike Doom 2016, Prodeus's weapons need to be reloaded, which I actually really like, it adds to the flow of combat because you can't just constantly fire your weapon and its a factor that helps balance the weapons. I look forward to the devs completing the weapon roster because the weapons. So far they are all fantastic, and the shooting is extremely satisfying due to many factors like the blood and dismemberment, the amazing sound design, and the great looking weapon sprites. Dispite the fact that the weapon roster so far are all classic weapons that appear often in other shooters, such as the pistol, pump shotgun, super shotgun, dual smgs, minigun, rocket laucher, and plasma rifle, they feel feel perfected versions of themselves, and it's refreshing to have more grounded weapons after many shooters lately have tried to hard to break the mold, such as Doom Eternal IMO. The pistol can be fired full auto, burst fire(while ads) and semi auto(as fast as you can pull the trigger). It's also very ammo efficient and very effective against the smaller enemys. The pump shotgun is just a beast, you get plenty of ammo for it and it reliably kills small enemys in a single shot and medium enemys in 2 to 3 shots at close range. It also has a charged incendiary shot that is accurate and can be fired at a much longer range and is very lethal to one target. I have not yet used the super shotgun, but from what I've seen from gameplay it's incredible, rather than being a double barreled shotgun it's quad barreled, and can fire 4 times before reloading, or ALL FOUR SHOTS AT ONE TIME. It's basically a compact futuristic version of the doomstick from Killing Floor 2 which is amazing. The dual smgs are pretty much what you'd expect, they burn through ammo fast and are pretty inaccurate but have crazy high dps, same with the minigun, the difference being the minigun is more meant for consistent high damage vs the smgs which do crazy high damage in shorter bursts. The rocket launcher is slow firing but fires an extremely fast missile that has a very large aoe, which is more in line with the launcher in Doom Eternal as apposed to Doom 2016 but I could not be more happy with it, it's superior to the launchers from both games. There are more weapons and many more weapons on the way but since I haven't used them I won't mention them, but I really look forward to playing this more and what it will bring when development is complete, especially multiplayer and custom maps which I think will be a huge hook for fans of the genre and possibly even attract new fans to the genre. Some things I would like to see in the future is more punishment for dying. As of right now you just revert checkpoint but all of the enemys you have already defeated remain defeated. I would like to see them respawn to force you to have to beat the encounter without dying, otherwise it would feel too easy. I would also like to see some changes to the way you select weapons. I would like to have an option to bind all of the weapons of similar type to the same key, like pressing 1 to swap through pistols, 2 to swap though shotguns, and so on, and having the weapon you have selected persist if you select a different weapon type and swap back to the other, rather than reverting to the first weapon in the set, this way you can sort of select what weapons you want and have them stay that way till you switch it out. I know this review was super long but I couldn't help myself, this game is amazing and it excites me. It's a must play for fans of the genre.

Solid AF retro-inspired shooter.

There are custom levels, fanmade campaigns, and a length dev-made campaign.

Enemy design is great, as is gunplay. Similar arsenal to what you'd expect in like Quake 2, or Doom 2.

There's this one fantastic level where the level of the slime in the map changes many times, exposing / covering new platforms and areas. Feels like the map is transforming, even though it's not. I also thought that one mission where you have to carefully take cover while being shot at by snipers, was really great. Very creative map design.

Haven't used the editor, but I've heard it is quite easy to use, similar to DoomBuilder. Lots of gore in this one, and lots of great lighting design, as well. Honestly, w/ the amount of content you get already, (in early access) the game really is worth $28.99 CAD even in its current state. Next time there's a major update, I'll be sure to return to this one - the gunplay is lovely.

I don't normally pay for Early Access games. I've been burned too many times on them. I broke this rule for Prodeus, and I'm so glad I did. The art style is a noteworthy blend of pixels, shading and gore. The gameplay is fast paced and brutal. Level design is clever and memorable. Dare I say this is a better Doom and Eternal was.

This has to be one of the best indie retro shooters in recent years.

It has the perfect DOOM feel, look and style and manages to not come off as a straight up copy. It manages to give you the holy grail for these types of games: a great movement system that feels very response AND genuinely amazing weapon/shooting mechanics.

And all that accompanied with a great soundtrack. Hoping the full release keeps up the genuinely amazing work

Agent_Vealckowsky

Someone asked me if this game is really as good as people claim. Well yes, yes it is.

Prodeus is like getting a handjob from Satan himself: sexy, unapologetic and excessively bloody.

It balances oldschool and modern visuals with considerable grace, which really was no easy task to accomplish. Enemy models and player weapons seem to be 3D models converted into 2D sprites on the fly by the game engine, so you get pixelated retro look along with modern lighting effects. You can even toggle that effect on and off.

Gameplay feels very, very familiar to original Doom, spruced with Brutal and some weapon mods. It's simple, fast, responsive and rewards you with endless showers of blood. Almost all enemies are Doom counterparts and you can feel the inspiration at every corner, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Weapon roster also consists mostly of well known classic guns, but has enough fresh spin on them to keep it interesting with the addition of alt fire.

Campaign level design is perfectly competent and the music score fits the action extremely well. You can also download new community made maps in-game for extra mileage, and some of them are really impressive.

The difficulty is more on the casual side, though. Even "ultra hard" doesn't feel particularly challenging and the checkpoint system just simply respawns you, while everything you killed so far is still dead. It makes coop very smooth, accessible and stress free experience though, as you retain all your weapons and can spawn or teleport next to the other player at any time. It won't please tryhards, but perhaps will be tweaked in the final release.

In short, this is the Doom 2.5 we never got. I unironically had more fun playing Prodeus than playing Doom Eternal and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to every retro shooter fan. Worth every penny.

Amazing graphics and art-style. Took just the right inspirations from the sprite based fps games.
Music is great too, looming and dark.
Not a negative per say but I would have loved this to be a fast paced arena shooter like doom. right now it s technically an arena shooter but there is no urge to keep moving for life preservation.
You can defeat hard enemies with patience. That should not be a feature in arena shooter in my honest opinion.

gameplay is fast and feels doomey. architecture visuals are pretty good, enemy design only works if you turn on some of the "classic" filters, the designs are WAY too generic for an end product. they feel like example assets. This game combines classic and modern style and gameplay. It has something from classic doom and quake, as well as from modern doom, and at the same time has its own charm.

Pros:

- Overall, the gameplay is fun and fast paced.
- Gunplay is very satisfying.
- Excellent level design, I enjoyed exploring maps.
- The game has style and is pretty atmospheric.
- No stupid plot. Just some brief texts like in good old days.
- Soundtrack!

Neutral:

- For me, pixelating the image so much feels unnecessary. On the other hand, it fits the game style well.

- In two locations the game lagged a lot, the frame rate was like 1 fps or something. This was the only bug I experienced despite the game is early access.

Cons:

- Checkpoint system. When you die, you respawn on last checkpoint, but killed enemies do not respawn. While it helps to keep the pace fast, it drastically reduces tension, at least if your goal is just to complete campaign rather than achive highest score. It's not ruining the game, but it makes it worse.

- A bit inconsistent difficulty. I completed about a half of the game on very hard and it wasn't hard. Then suddenly I had to lower difficultly to hard, otherwise it became too annoying. And finally I was able to beat the last level only on very easy (not even medium or easy) because I didn't want to spend hours on it. Fortunately you can change difficulty at any time.

Prodeus is awesome.

Every time you shoot a gun, a lightning strikes somewhere in the world. Every time you kill a demon is like taking a blood shower. Every time you reload a weapon your muscles grow.

Prodeus is a Doom of its own of the 90s. It's a simple yet very delightful comeback of the classical 90s shooters. Developers know exactly the game they're crafting.

The guns feel and sound beefy, crispy and satisfying. I don't remember the last time I used a handgun in a game after picking up a shotgun. In Prodeus, however, I used it regularly because it is a menace. In fact every gun felt awesome to use and it did feel that a lot of time, love and care went into nailing the sound design and the feel of the each gun. Of course, the 4-barrel shotgun could sound a bit punchier.

Andrew Hulshult's soduntrack is stunning. He knows when to rock you and keep you on your toes with punchy electronic music.

This game is a work of art and love for FPS. Definitely an easy recommendation.

I haven't finished the game yet to be honest I don't have many points to say but I have two important points I want to talk about
1- I can't describe how amazing the weapons feel, the shooting in this game is satisfaying AF when you kill an enemy his body will blow up and the blood will scattered everywhere Even the room will turn to blood and its have a cool sound design this is the part that prodeus really shine its just feel so great to shoot

BUT
2- what i really dislike about the game is the checkpoint system when you die and respawn every enemy you killed they won't come back
and This thing kills the element of challenge and makes death worthles i hate it a lot thats make the game without challenge i hope the developers change that soon
but overall from what i've played i think its cool game and its worth playing

The amount of trauma and hopelessness that every gun in this game can produce is quiet simply "Unmatched". The moment you pick up the shotgun, you become an artist. Before purchasing Prodeus, you should be aware of how its checkpoints work.

The game has an unusual checkpoint system which I think most retro FPS fans would consider cheating. The game does not explain how the checkpoints work, so you may end up cheating without realizing it. It is a very unpleasant feeling.

Here's how the checkpoints work: throughout each map there are several blue checkpoints. If you die after touching one, you are given the option of continuing which respawns you at the most recent checkpoint with the health and ammo you previously had. That sounds fine... what's the problem? Every time you continue you recover your health and ammo, but the entire world stays unchanged and importantly the enemies stay dead. So you effectively have infinite lives and infinite ammo, while your slain enemies STAY dead. None of this is explained.

This ruins the difficulty of the game as any map can be completed on any difficulty by mindless attrition. I think this is obviously cheating. And I am a player who save scums every 5 seconds in Doom.

To be clear, there is no way to save your progress in a level other than checkpoints. This means you have 2 options: either cheat or complete each level with no deaths. I spent hours THINKING I was completing levels, but I was actually cheating by using checkpoints. I had to restart and do no death runs for all the levels I had previously "beat" under false pretences.

I understand it's not feasible to make major technical changes late in development. But if the game didn't have any checkpoints at all, I would have no problem. It's the combination of them being enabled by default AND not explained that is the problem.

I can think of two ways to fix this:

1) Make it TOTALLY clear what happens when you use a checkpoint. Make it clear to the player that they are using a cheat assist. Turn them off by default.

2) If you use a checkpoint, don't restore health/ammo or have a limited number of lives.

I know it's still early access, but the game comes out very soon and there is little sign this will be addressed in any way. The devs have recently disabled Steam discussion, but you can still see the older archive and there you'll find many people bringing up this checkpoint issue and the devs seemingly ignoring it all.

This is the first game review I have ever posted. My overall impression of this game is positive. I am posting a negative review in hopes of alerting others about this issue. I think casual players and game journalists won't have a big problem with this system, but it's something my fellow geriatric boomy shoot fans would DEFINITELY like to be aware of.

Honestly, playing the game on Hard with no saves is totally manageable and fun. I just wished I'd known to do that before I wasted 3 hours being GASLIT into thinking I was actually making progress!!

Bread in the fridge

This game is a mess
The enemies are fine for the most part but some of them are really annoying (Chaingunners, Pain-elementals, lost souls and that dude with the big hands/fingers) I also find the blue reskin enemies pointless
The arsenal is a cluttered mess why have a chaingun when the duel machinegun serves the same purpose without slowing you down and you can have steady aim with individual fire Why have a grenade launcher when you have a devastating rocket launcher why does the super shotgun use a single shot for its primary fire it should be a double otherwise it makes the pump almost worthless
I seemed to have alot of trouble spotting who was shooting me sometimes the enemies really don't stick out when far away and most of these maps are pretty big although i seemed to stop having this problem when switching to models instead of sprites
The reloading just gets in the way this isn't a tactical shooter it's a DOOM clone
I really don't like this games approach to difficulty and death the lower the difficulty the less damage you'll take (enemies also have less health) and the more supplies you'll find when you die you reset to a checkpoint but everyone you killed is still dead this doesn't even seem to effect your score (it didn't for me I always got 80-100K)
Also not all of the weapons have key bindings which is just awkward

Morgoth Of WA

First off; The checkpoint system sucks imo but its optional at least.

Tries to be a blend of Dusk and Doom 2016, fails at both.

Enemy feedback is basically not there and weapons feel awful because of it, shotgun is an offense to shotguns in the retro games it hails back to, look at how Blood and Dusk fixes that. Enemies and player character have no identity WHATSOEVER; doom roster clones with mildy different additions to their attacks/movement/hp and the character is just a static face that shows how much hp you have by turning into a skeleton. Levels look beautiful and the art is generally good, but the gameplay is where these kind of games need to make their bottom line and sadly Prodeus comes of as just 'Mid' in that regard.

TL;DR if they fixed enemy feedback and made the dismembering of enemies limbs actually matter, make enemies have their own unique sounds/dialouge, making the enemy player at least have an animated portrait, and most importantly, not having such a slow start to the campaign.

One of the first games I tried on Linux Mint and Steam. It runs amazingly, and is a great FPS for fans of fast-paced, run-and-gun shooters of the 90s and early 2000s. Yet, it also has its own style and atmosphere that goes beyond a simple Doom-clone. Fantastic performance, game-play, level design and music. Excellent work!

More satisfying than the last few Dooms. Plays more like the older Dooms too. Well until you get to the blue aliens. Now its taking a turn for the annoying. Electric balls flying at you constantly and all ammo coming from ammo refill platforms make you have to stop moving to pick up ammo. Its slowly getting less fun, but its still ok

Perfection does exist.

Its name?

PRODEUS

Prodeus scratches an itch I and many of you won't have had properly scratched since the Wolf3D, Doom95 and Unreal Tournament era. It does everything my "Future Dreams" were at tat time, A happy marriage between 2D and 3D, 144FPS, HDR, 32:9 Super-Ultra-Wide aspect ratio? Full modding support?
Prodeus has it all. It is guaranteed to bring back fond memories of high octane, gorey first perssson shooter combat the way that it originally was conceived by ID, GT Interactive, Infogrames and Digital Extremes. Names most of which have gone from being at the very bleeding edge of gaming, to becoming names that we remember from a distant future.

Bounding Box Software ICW Humble Games have brought us something to bridge generations with. And wow, what a flawless execution thereof.

Get this game, you're not going to regret it.
Unless you're chicken, of course. 🥺

Really great game- revisiting this one after some time off. I love the art style- just a little old school, with some cool chunky new-school polish, and some options if you want to make it grungier. The gameplay is fun, and the weapons are really cool. The maps are great, and there are excellent community maps available. There is a good search system for finding award winning community maps too.

Only complaint is the checkpoint system- if you die, you go back to the last checkpoint, but everything stays dead, so it isn't much of a setback. Ultimately this is a very minor gripe- you can avoid the checkpoints or restart level on death if you want to be really hardcore about it. It's certainly no reason not to buy the game.

Playing on hard, as a slightly below average FPS guy, is not too stressful (there are two higher difficulty settings, never fear...) although I may revise as I get deeper into the game.

First review ever, seriously contemplated it considering it's still in development. But I gave my honest critique on weapon balance fixes (namely with how weak the minigun and quad shotgun felt), and opinion shared by others and found that in response my comment was deleted and the thread locked. So my hand has been forced.

First the positives. The music is amazing, and many levels show off some immaculate game design.

However, a fundamental issue with the game is that the pacing of the weapons is really disproportionate, and the power scaling makes no sense. after the 3 hour mark you have a bunch off different firearms with different ammo types and everything is great, But then you can spend the next 7 hours playing 14+ levels and never receive any new guns, upgrades or anything else even though supposedly 2/3rd of your guns are available later. Even if this is remedied in future levels the "drip feed" of new weapons and tools is completely inconsistent. Supposedly their are upgrades? I'm more than halfway through thew campaign and haven't seen a single gold bar or upgrade.

Then there are the weapons. The shotgun and pistol are amazing. Almost too amazing. A single charged shot from your basic pump action shotgun can one-shot a "pinky demon" with a headshot, but the "Quad shotgun" found much later in the game can't do the same with me unloading all four rounds point blank at the same pinky demon. And the quad shotgun naturally has a lower ammo capacity and slower reload, but none of the power to back it up.

Same goes for the pistol vs the minigun. IT's faster and more economic to use 12 rounds from a pistol to wipe out a cacodemon than it is to spend 60+ rounds from a minigun to do the same thing, and your slower while moving and it takes longer to fire those 60 rounds. Even in crowds, bunny-hopping around firing a miinigun hoping to shred through all the the low level threats is foolhardy since you'll end up using all bullets well before you clear out a room of basic goons.

Also while I praise the environmental storytelling and ease of navigation through the levels (unlike the labyrinthine levels of doom), later levels tended to rely way too much on either killing me in unfair traps or teleporting in enemies in behind me, which I would have no way to respond to unless I knew in advanced. There are also sections where you have to accept unavoidable damage from hit-scan style enemies Whether it's fall in a hole in front of a minigunner, or walk through a portal and receive a fireball to the face.

Really wanted to like this game, but Prodeus is like a an amateur chef getting some of the best exotic ingredients, then microwaving it, setting the kitchen on fire, and somehow serving half cold slop. You can do way better, the passion and the resources are clearly here.

That's why the level and campaign editor give me hope. I'm old, I have work to go to, I don't have time to figure out how 3d game design works. But if there are young gaming pioneers who want to show even the developers how it's done, this is your chance.

TLDR; Solid art and amazing music; very retro doom style gameplay ; Complete lack of progression in terms of weapons and upgrades; the "uber" weapons are actually really disappointing:
Would have given this game a mixed or Yes review, but the devs didn't want my feedback so... Big thumbs down.

when you kill the enemy they blow up like a melon, its crazy satisfying

Having played the first level and a user-made map on medium difficulty, this seems to not really do anything worth seeing.

- Weapons feel inaccurate and weak, with pointless gimmick alternate fire modes.
- Enemies can soak up some fire, but are tactically uninteresting.
- The level was very cramped with completely non-obvious progression.
- The music is far from Hulshult's best.
- The automap's pan and zoom speed were so low as to make it useless.
- If there's a plot, I failed to notice it.
- The game fails to maintain any sense of immersion. It seemingly makes no effort at narrative or atmosphere; feels a bit like a simple shooting gallery. Unfortunately so far the shooting isn't really interesting.

Maybe the later levels will turn it around somehow, but at present I really don't see the appeal.

-most satisfying FPS I've played in way too long. (since Doom Eternal)

Nibble My Ear Plz
Nibble My Ear Plz

I'm kinda torn on this game. I really want to like it, but there's way too many things I dislike or bug me a lot while playing it. I mostly played on the Very Hard difficulty which makes what I say vary from person to person, so keep that in mind.

First off, the difficulty on Very Hard or Ultra Hard gives enemies more health, which is a lazy way to improve the difficutly in the first place, especially since that makes certain weapons not effective at all later on. Yeah, enemies' attacks are faster and you take more damage, but adding more health to enemies in combination with those modifiers makes it a pain in the ass to fight when enemies group up or when your focusing on one. Very Hard isn't too bad since headshots increase damage, but when your fighting a group, you can't sit there with grace and care all the time. I wished that the harder modes would have just more enemies or more stronger types included instead of the health thing.

The weapons on higher difficulties start to lack for a few of them. The pistol isn't that bad it's pretty accurate and can get headshots if your good at getting them. Its alt fire blows though (just shoots a burst of three shots). Maybe give a powerful shot that does high damage but eats five bullets? Idk. The Dual SMGs are the go to weapons (decent accuracy when firing one, more damage less accurate while firing both). For some reason if you first just one of the gun, it eats the whole clip and you have to reload both guns? That needs to be changed to when you run out of one of the clips in the gun then you shouldn't be able to fire it. Also feel like 40 bullets is low for SMG so maybe raise it to 50 bullets (25 clips for each gun instead of 20)? Chaingun is the worst gun so far to use since the damage for it is ok at best but then you move more slowly while using it. It's less accurate then the other guns too, so what's the whole point of it then? Either make it do a lot of damge at close range or just remove the moment penalty for it. The shotgun is the runner up for bad weapons since it's only uselful at close range. Getting a headshot helps kill weaker guys in about one hit, but you need to be too close for it to do that making you risk taking damage. And it takes like 2-3 shots to take down most normal monsters if your a mid distance away from them, making it take too long when you could of switched to the SMGs and shot them rapidly in like 10-12 shots without much trouble. The alt fire is nice and makes up for that, but that takes time to charge up and when enemies move fast, you don't have time for that. Feel like tightening the spread of the gun could help it since the quad shotgun just does more damage at close range (it can one shot weak monsters WITHOUT headshots). I think the devs did tighten the spread a bit but it's not enough. And the alt fire should be changed to having it charge up on it own and ready to fire when it's charged up. You can even not change the spread of the shotgun's normal shot if you could instantly pop off the alt fire shot since it's more tighter anyway and then you could combo the normal shots with it. Quad shotguns works well as it was intended, shoots bullets that does high damage at closer range but ONLY at close ranges. Sucks balls even at mid unless hitting a fat enemy. Alt fire is a "delete mid type monsters in a single blow and hurts stronger monster a lot, leaving it up to a weapon switch combo of your choice (typically a rocket shot will finish it off though quicker). Rocket Launcher shoots a rocket without falling from gravity (makes me use it for more aerial monster). Alt fire just explodes the rocket wherever it is which I never used since if I wanted splash damage done I would shoot the ground with it. Perhaps give it homing alt that moves slowly or maybe it can make the rocket move slower but do more damage and have a bigger AOE to it. Grenade Launcher is used for closer range and grouped up enemies since you can shoot 6 of them instead of the rockets 1 shot. Think it does more damage then the rocket if I remember from playing Ultra Hard for a bit. Think the alt fire was sticky bombs or it cause the grenades to bounce around walls before blowing up but I rarely use it (hence why I can't remember well). Energy Rifle is pretty solid it's slightly stronger then normally bullets. Shoots fast and has a nice clip size for it. Alt fire locks on to a wall or enemy (if you hit them) and cause all energy shots travel to that spot. Kinda gimmicky, but certain monster like the chaingunners or the monster that shoots a wave at you that homes in makes it so you can attack behind cover or while moving away from them. And the chaos gun is good too. Only some of the weapons need changes but it would help much in the long run.

Another thing that bothers me is trying to read enemy's attacks. Since on higher difficulties enemies shoot faster, projectiles move faster, you have to read their attack quickly to know to avoid them. But it seems like the animations aren't matching to when their attacks are coming out, so sometimes you just take hits you feel like you can't avoid much or if at all. The imps try to attack by predicting your movement (which a nice change of pace of them just shooting to where you used to be), but the imps will make a small movement and a ball comes out of nowhere. They have a few different animations but some are just not much of a movement at all. Fast moving enemies will close the distance quick and you can't outrun them and probably will take a hit. Combine this with pairs of these enemies in small room (or even when they get buffed or buffed to be mostly invisible by Hunters or other enemies that buff, and your in a world of hurt. It just feels like you simply need to peek at enemies or just outgun them before then even spawn in to avoid as much damage before they kill you, and it gets old pretty fast.

Finally the last one is how checkpoints work. I don't mind how checkpoints work since it adds tensions to the fights (although I normally reset when I die cause I like to try in one go and get a nice high score), but why when you die and go back to a checkpoint, why are the monsters you killed prior to that checkpoint stay dead? There no sense of challenge or rush when playing since dying doesn't really effect the game only your high score. It makes the fun of playing lose steam and no chance in trying to get better. To my knowledge, most people already talked about this in their reviews so it's odd that this game has been out for a while and has not changed that.

I do love how this game looks and sounds. The music is a banger (it's from Andrew Hulshult so no surprised there). If you a casual person looking to get into FPS games then I could see this working out better for new comers, but I feel like adding more changes to the weapons, difficulties, and animations will vastly help this game in the long run. At the end of the day, I DO like this game, but I hope there's more things to come cause it hard to sit and play through for me at the moment.

So they made an extremely violent shooter with sprite work that they put way more effort than I have ever seen people put in before to emulate it being 3D without it being 3D?

There are times when after a hard day, a girl just wants to sit back and shoot some monsters. This game is perfect for that. In all seriousness, the guns are great, and enemies just disintegrate and paint everything red. AND I didn't get lost once. That's saying something as I easily get lost in everyday life and when I play Doom. Not that the levels are straight. They loop back on themselves, but the design is such that you know where you have to go. Highly recommend it if you are a fan of Doom and Quake.

The game is pretty, with interesting set designs and things that happen in them. Respawn points are placed randomly throughout maps because the dev doesn't know how to properly supply the player with health and ammo at the right times/places while scaling enemy difficulty and placement, I think? Sure felt that way up to where I stopped, anyway.
The whole game, once you stop collecting runes at the ends of levels, has no context or reason for why the character is where they are, or why they're even in the level if there's no rune there (but you still get a rune after finishing the level even though you never picked one up in that level, against previous levels where you did?) . Many of the objectives that come up after that point don't really explain themselves and you just have to guess at what the hell you need to do to go to the next unexplained area where you need to do something else you don't understand... Yeah, this game could really use some objective trackers a la borderlands, and a whole lot more context for quite a few levels... as well as a waypoint or even a mark on the impressive automap telling you where you need to go.
As for the slander on the enemies and balancing.... If you play on Normal, you'll find that certain enemies have a lot more hp and do tons of damage, while others are tiny and do lots of damage, or have little hp and little damage. It's a little too simply done, oddly enough, and they seem to just be randomly placed and selected for the most part.... But, then the respawn points are there and it just... Confuses me. You get a Nexus Point when the dev feels like it- sometimes in arenas, sometimes not, sometimes before big fights, sometimes not. The same goes for health, armor, and ammo, it might be placed where the player might find themselves needing it, it might not.
Then there's the death counter, ingame timer, and being able to rate the levels after you complete them, like there's some collectible or achivement or something, I don't really know... and this game has an overworld map and Trials, like a Crash Bandicoot or Donkey Kong game. There's a lot going on in this game, but not a lot of sense or direction to go with it. Hell, while I'm at it, there's three slots for "upgrades", but nothing ever gets brought up about that, and there's a counter for what looks like gold bars on the map screen, but, once again, no explanation of what that is or what it could do.

Do you like games with a great storyline? Do you like games that spend the first 20 minutes trying to force you to care about the universe the game takes place? Do you like cutscenes that explain to you what's going on, why you're the good guy and why the guys you're going to be killing are the bad guys? Do you want a half hour tutorial that holds your hand as you begin the process of learning the game controls with instructions like "Okay, now LOOK TO YOUR LEFT"? Do you like complex game systems that force your left hand into impossible shapes with hard to remember key combinations so you can POWERSLIDE and ATOMIC CROUCH UPPERCUT enemies as you WALL RUN and SUPERDASH your way to victory? Do you like relaxing bluegrass banjo music?

If you answered "yes" to any of those, this isn't the game for you.

If you want an old school shooter feel that comes without all the frustrating backtracking of old school level design - if you want a game that is totally dedicated to being a GAME without aspirations of building a cinematic universe - if you want to blow the hell out of some cool looking enemies with simple, easy to use systems and weapons that feel and sound awesome - and if you want to do all of this with some awesome metal music playing behind the brutal, punchy sounds of your gunshots, then this game might be your thing.

This is a good game, just not great. My main complaint is the lack of innovation. If you've played a ton of retro-styled first-person shooters, there's honestly not much else to see in Prodeus. This game tried to be a combination of Doom (2016) and Brutal Doom. The enemies in Prodeus however are nowhere near as fast or well animated as they were in Doom (2016). While the music isn't terrible, it can get a little repetitive, it seems to go on a ten second music loop for much of the level consisting of instrumental heavy metal music. I'm not saying you shouldn't try this game, just don't expect anything you haven't already seen. This game is kind of like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, we know it's a good game, it just didn't introduce any new ideas, it was just there to progress the story. However, since this game is currently in Early Access, I will update my review as more updates get released. The combat is good, the weapons are fun to use, it's a good game, just not a very original one.

I can't rave enough about this game... it's so perfect for what it tries to be! It's what the original Doom and Doom II wished they could be. perfect balance of dungeon crawl... anticipation... and full guns akimbo blazing action! You can play it as you want it... cautious bullet management...or just run in and blast away! check your corners and move carefully... or just pull out your minigun and say "come get some!" The music and atmosphere is perfectly dark and engaging and draws you down a rabbit hole filled with traditional FPS goodness. And if that wasn't enough, the level design is clever, and although the graphics are rather outdated by modern standards (yet still awesome looking!), the game shows you repeatedly how none of that actually matters when you smell the gunpowder and feel the heat of fireballs exploding against the ground beside you! A MUST HAVE for any tradition FPS fan!

BUY THIS GAME RIGHT. NOW.

I bought Prodeus today. I'm a huge fan of boomer shooters. This game... Jesus christ. Buy it. If you're a fan of boomer shooters, buy it. If you're a fan of Doom, buy it. If you're a fan of ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF BLOOD, GORE, VISCERA AND BODY HORROR, this game will make you incredibly happy. The game looks, sounds and feels incredible. Absolutely phenomenal. The music is God-tier. The sound effects are to die for. The guns are all SO DAMN CHUNKY. The shotgun is easily in my top 10 fps shotguns, up there with Blood and Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. The Pistol feels incredible. Like so chunky that I'd use it over practically better weapons just for the feel. The shredders are so satisfying, albeit situational. And the minigun. Oh. My. God. The minigun itches every scratch I've been needing from recent games I've been playing. The sound is incredible, it's so chunky, it looks amazing, and it's incredibly effective. The level where you unlock the minigun presents you with a massive murder montage at the end of the episode, where you get max ammo, pick up the minigun, and then the game feeds you more and more ammo along your path as you go through hordes of weak enemies, shredding them and painting yourself and your surroundings in blood, gore and viscera. I've felt like a god before in games. But I've never felt like I could FIGHT god in a video game. The rocket launcher is incredibly satisfying as well. Just like all of the other weapons, upon first firing I audibly gasped and exclaimed how good this game is. In my 2 hours playing it today I probably have recommended it 20 or so times and can't stop gushing about how good it is. I've audibly voiced my pleasure in mowing down hordes of enemies. And I keep catching myself talking to myself as well, just saying "This game is so good" "This game looks amazing" "Oh my god that felt awesome". Buy this game right now. It's an absolute gem. Genuinely worth the $25 just for the 2 hours I've played thus far, and I'm not even 10% through the campaign.

BUY THIS GAME. NOW. IT'S SO GOOD AND THE DEVELOPERS HAVE EARNED EVERY BIT OF MONEY I CAN POSSIBLY GIVE THEM FOR THIS OR ANY FUTURE PROJECTS.

This game FUCKS. I have been rock hard since starting it. The soundtrack is like a proggier, more synthy, Doom-esque approach. Andrew Hulschult, the composer of the sountrack, is an absolute force. In fact, I didn't know this game existed, one of the tracks popped up on my spotify metal playlist. This game does such a phenomenal job of bringing all of the great things about the FPS of old into the modern gaming world. I didn't know how badly i needed this game. Those fellas in their early 30's, late 20's that grew up on DOOM, Unreal Tournament, Quake, etc. will absolutely fall in love with this game. The fluidity of the gameplay, the 2d sprites, the amount of gore, the speed, the chaos, the level design and platforming. Yee

Retro, that's pretty cool. First-person shooter, that's neat. It's fine. 3+ out of 5.

However! What is this "log in failed" all about? Won't let me create an account?

Reminds me of Doom Eternal in game play, put not as challenging. That was kind of a let down, even on the highest difficulty. There's a whole wack of options that let you tweak the visuals, and even make the characters 2D or polygonal. The map was easy to understand, but hard to navigate with the keyboard and mouse, so I ended up never really using it. The weapons were all very enjoyable to use, and I know it's a retro shooter, but I kinda wish there was a melee attack. Often you are cornered by enemies and they'll end you while you are reloading, so it would have been cool to create space with a couple of jabs. I enjoyed the game very much otherwise and have recommended to everyone I know.

Great enemies and weapons. Feel like a kid again.

This game isn't bad, but it has many flaws

The game is like if DOOM 1/2 was remastered... except it has its own maps and weapons, making it unique.

But even though it's unique, it suffers from the same flaws as DOOM 1/2. It's a little too easy.

Actually, in this game, its EVEN easier because enemies stay dead when you die, and the hardest difficulty is nothing

Slapping some fancy graphics doesn't fix nearly 40 year old mistakes. It's basically a Doom mod with a price tag

If you liked Doom 2016 as much as I did, this is absolutely the boomer shooter for you. The visuals are excellent, the gunplay is excellent, simple but deep, movement feels excellent, the levels are very well designed...I could go on, but instead you should just get this game. Even at only 4-5 hours to finish the current campaign its worth the asking price, but its going to get even better and there's tons of levels you can grab from the community too!

This game is crack. Hold down shift to sprint and shoot everything. The game is visually appealing, like something from the past but made to perfection. Fast, nice level design, amazing sprite-work. Can't really complain other than the obvious "very DOOM-like".

The Doom clone to end all Doom clones.

The gameplay is fast, frantic anxiety inducing and excellent. I haven't even finished my first run through and it's still in early access right now but I love it. I find it to be a mix of Doom, Doom 3 and Quake.

The music, the atmoshere, the gunplay. There's something else about this game I cannot quite put my finger on, but putting my finger on the trigger and pulling is the one of the most satisfying feelings. I literally moaned in pleasure when I ran into a group of those deamon things that rushes at you as I had just found the minigun and needed and excuse to use it.

Speaking of guns. All the guns have their advantages and disadvantages. Pistol is great for taking outr basic enemies at range. Shotgun utterly obliterates at close range especially with the charged shot, but you can also use it at mid range in a pinch. The shredders are great for fast elimination of groups at close rage but while controlling your shots as to not waste ammo. The minigun is for groups of heavy close enemies who need more damage output. The rocket launcher is perfect for sniping heavy enemies while the charge rifle is awesome for both hitting multiple enemies or sniping other snipers who use the same weapon.

Walk into a room, throw a switch, and get ready to asses your enemy types, your terrain and what weapons you will need to focus on depending on your ammo. I played on medium difficulty, but now knowing what I know, when I play again it will be at a higher difficulty to up the adrenaline.

The other thing about this game is the visuals. They mastered the mix of old school pixels and modern day lighting. I'm not sure how to describe it, but they made it look unlike any other game I have ever played that tried to do the same thing.

What I would like to see from this game is a quick melee. So far the only melee is your fists and they are a seperate weapon slot that really only work on the most basic zombie types and during the later game you really don't have time to be whipping out the dukes to take em out unless you leave them for last after wiping out all the bigger baddies. It would certainly help with conserving ammo, especially in the higher difficulties. Maybe they could implement a kick that does some damage and some knockback on the smaller horde types. I dunno. Not a complaint, just a thought!

Anyway, this game is awesome, if you love retro shooters, you will enjoy this, nuff said.

The weapons, art, and music are really cool but unfortunately the level design is comparatively a little boring. The community content makes up for it though. I personally don't hate the save system, it makes Prodeus very easy but its still a fun game.

OMG! What an awesome shooter!!!

I love playing this game.

So many nice details.

You really get into a flow and really in every level.

Extra bonus: Playable on Mac OS Monterey (runs perfectly fine on Macbook Pro M1 Max with external WQHD display)

Big thanks to the developers!

If u like the aestetic and u are big fan of fast paced shooters, i can not u recomend this more. Despite beeing in early acces it looks polished, music is great. Everery weapon i picked up (6 until now) feels amazing and fun to use. This game is already great but it has even more potential for future development. If u like challanges u can try your strenght in leaderboards. The difficulty is in a good spot. Im playing on medium but im going to try ultra hard after im going to fisnish the game.
GO BUY IT, U WONT REGRET !
