I bought this game when it was new, about 13 years ago, played it for about an hour, then forgot about it until now.
I was able to play the tutorial, but could not get a new game to start. It just crashed.
As far as the tutorial goes, the controls are not good, but the voiceover acting is decent and the Blade/Matrix style soundtrack is bangin'.
Overall not an entertaining game.

Project Freedom is a poorly designed space shooting game.

Cons:
-Crash at startup. So I have to delete all mpg files from movies folder.
-No game manual. The Steam version only provides a key chart.
-Crude UI design.
-The battle field is a mess. I can't figure out any object.
-There is no range indicator. I didn't know whether my laser cannon hit the target or not.
-Enemy fighters killed me so many time in the mission 2. I doubt those developers know how to make an easy mode.

I think Tachyon: The Fringe is much better than this one.

You will have to either replace the mpeg.dll file in the game's root folder with a dummy file you can find on PCGamingWiki, or delete all the video files from the movies folder otherwise the game will crash on startup on Win 10 or later systems. Minor annoyance, easily fixed.

I was also pleased to discover that, contrary to what some reviews are saying, Project Freedom actually DOES have (some) joystick support! It's just very picky about what it considers a joystick. It fully recognizes input from my T16000M, and possibly some other well known joysticks as well. Cannot confirm. It does not recognize the axes of virtual joysticks created by software like vJoy and JoystickGremlin unless you map it to mouse control, which is just... no.

Fun game. Absolutely worth the price.

For $3 you could do a hell of a lot worse. Sure, the writing and cut-scenes are mediorce with bad voice acting and only the occasional bit of decent tolerable dialogue, and it's a bit repetitive and short at 3-4 hours, but it's a fun, nice-looking old-school bit of space combat.

I really like this game, especially for its modding value. Sure, it's just brainless shooting, but at least its graphics are pretty good. And it runs on old graphics hardware too (albeit with low frame rates)! I'm making a mod right now, that's due in a few days. If you like to kill 20-minute chunks of time, and want a bit of difficulty, you'll like this.

Public review update: I still enjoy this game. Yes, the story is shallow, voiceovers sometimes annoying, and the missions all playing the same, but if you just want to shoot some baddies in space, it delivers. Every once in a while the in-game banter is funny. If you like messing around with game files, the game is certainly moddable. I've completed my mod a long time ago (see here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/34810/discussions/0/882960308802221978/), and although the models are in a proprietary format, I think I saw some 3DS/LWO loading code, so it's probably possible to introduce new models.

Go pick it up on a sale.

An alright game. Short, but worth more than the $3 you pay for it. Only critisisms being the movie audio doesn't play properly(theres only like 4 in the entire game), no high res/windowed mode, "W" and "S" are roll left and right.

Surprisingly good for such a cheap game.

The graphics can be awesome - if you're into Mars geography, you'll wet yourself. Gameplay is fine, it's a general arcade shooter - no targeting, just shoot in front of you. Friendly AI actually do their jobs, getting kills, getting killed, and engaging enemies you're not engaging.

Plot, music and voiceovers should be taken less seriously. The finale isn't epic, but it's still a fun game for a couple of days.

Space bits might reminder you of a stripped-down Freelancer (but it's a shooter, not sandbox), graphics might remind you of one of the X games, and the on-planet bits will definitely remind you of Rogue Squadron.

P.S. Play on easy.

A nice little indy space-sim. A little short, but the ship-upgrade system gives it some replay value. It'll keep you occupied for a few hours. Get it on sale, if you can.

Freelancer Lenna
Freelancer Lenna

It's a very linear space fighter game wherein the general idea is "crush kill destroy you are the STRONGEST IN THE UNIVERSE". You get to upgrade your ship as time passes, but that's the only customization there is; minimal replay value due to exactly one campaign and no modding. Story's okay, voice acting's generally good but has a few terribad spots, mostly where the script obviously wanted characters to be interrupted but the devteam didn't bother making the pauses between different characters speaking have anything other than a fixed interval.

Basically: It's good fun, and it's incredibly cheap at the moment (75 cents) so you don't really have that much to lose by buying it.

Mister Gravity

Not an easy game, even on easy mode. However, if you enjoyed Starfox, then this is a game you'll enjoy. It's like all-range mode Starfox with great weapons and tons of enemies. The only thing the game appears to be lacking is powerups, because I keep dying. Fun, but hard.

It's suppose to be a action based Simulation right? Well it's more a lowered down version of Free lancer, whats diffrent here you think? They take away all your freedom to do as pleased and instead you are forced on each mission but before you go out on mission you can choose which upgrade you want to get upgraded from the reward and the things you can level are Attack, Defence and Speed.

You can to select easyli what upgrade to take and sometimes you get your weapon /sheild / engines upgraded. For being 3€ on steam it's not to bad... but I would recomand this game to people who enjoys being a lapdog and forced doing mission for upgrades.

Oh yeah the lock on missels will miss 90% of the time so if you are lucky with it might hit.

Pros
pretty enough for me (not hard)
control is responsive
runs smooth on older PC

Cons
mouse is not locked to game screen on multi monitor setups
voice acting is sometimes bad
friendly AI does nothing
secondary weapons are only good against stationary targets
controls are limited
gameplay is shallow
gfx settings are limited
music is repeditive and doesnt match the gameplay
"Right between the eyes!"

I bought it for 1€ on Winter Sale, worth it.

Not worth a cent. Bad voice acting, bad design, weird controls. Allies seem to think that you need encouragement every time you kill an enemy ship such as "Right between the eyes!", "Looks like we've got a new ace!" and my favourite "Nice shoot!" (Not gramatically correct). I got this game as it was cheap in the sale but even though I only spent a a pound on it, I was severely dissapointed. I won't complain about any other of the sub-par features (graphics, physics, mesh rendering) as it is an older game, however if you care about that sort of thing then this isn't for you.

The game was awesome until we got to mission 21. The end was unfinished when the after objection was complete. Needs conclusion after this, their were no promotion, acknowledgements of any kind. Just nothing really.

This game seems really simple and there is nothing big about it, but I like it. I like it so much that I beated it, like, ten times or even more. Maybe it's quite beautiful views of space around, or fast paced combat, or simplicity of gameplay, I can't say for certain. But I definitely recommend you give it a shot if you'll see this game on sale.

Admiral Frosty
Admiral Frosty

Decent space shooter with simple mouse controls. Don't spent more than an dollar or two on this, as it was a budget releaase even back in the day, but it's actually not bad. Don't expect much depth, and it's easy to play through in a day, but it's fun for what it is.

Iconian
Iconian

How does one appropriately rate a game? With Project Freedom, it was a difficult choice.

Let's talk about the good things about Project Freedom. It's pretty fast-paced, and the actual gameplay--space fighter combat--is quite enjoyable. You have several weapons available, useful for different things. Lasers are good for taking down enemy fighters. Missiles and the plasma weapon are good for targeting large buildings on planets, freighters, and capital ships. The gameplay itself is pretty good.

But the plot is pretty simplistic (Human factions are fighting each other, a couple alien races show up and you ultimately have to destroy a huge station/space ship), there are no characters, and the bare bones upgrade system almost may as well not have been included--just decide whether you want to upgrade engines, defenses, or weapons, and the game seems to choose which particular sub-upgrade you get within the category of your choice.

I can't remember any of the music, having now played PF twice. Contrast this with, for example, Darkstar One. Darkstar One really isn't a great game--but I can still remember the main theme music, and the quirkiness of the main and secondary characters.

But, once again, the gameplay is pretty solid. PF didn't really have major flaws--there's just not much meat in this package. And in consequence, I only spent something like $3 or $4 on PF, and once I bought it, it only took ~5 hours to beat the ~20 missions. So even if there are a few annoyances, and a general lack of interesting content . . . it won't last for very long, and during that time you have nice, fast-paced space-blasting melee. And how much different is that from, say, Counter Strike? Except, CS is replayable because it's multiplayer and has tons of maps. So it was kind of hard for me to say No instead of Yes on this game.

So I'll say this. Don't go into PF expecting a whole lot. If you're fan of space shoot 'em ups, go ahead and buy it, but make sure you don't pay much. Go in, blast some baddies, and get out. (That's what I did, yes, TWICE, since that part was pretty fun, and I kind of wondered if something might jump out at me the second time around.) If you want something that's a lot more amusing, colorful, and enjoyable and has a decent amount of meat, buy Darkstar One, for example. But I don't think your average player will find a lot of interest in Project Freedom.

5/10.

Old fan here even before getting it on Steam, so nostalgia got me biased but i have to admit that it is funny how all the negative reviews have barely 1 hour played in the game. Devs really outdid themselves, for the time it was released it's awesome, it has a great story, exceptional voice acting and stunning graphics.

Fomin
Fomin

Fun, simple basic game. If you tried X Rebirth or Parkan 2 like me and immediately got lost, this is the game for you.

The controls are mostly good but the ones for roll were a bit idiosyncratic so I re-mapped them. Be advised that in this game if you want to remap buttons, you have to make sure that you are using buttons that aren't already used for another function. This means that if you really want to change the controls, you have to first assign actions to buttons you don't use, then assign the actions to the newly empty buttons you want. For instance, I wanted to move the roll buttons to A and D rather than W and S so I had to first set strafe controls to buttons that I didn't use, then assign roll to A and S, then assign the strafe buttons to buttons I wanted to use.

Remapping the controls felt a little bit like doing a sliding squares puzzle but after I did, I was able to get a control set up which I liked really well.

It was a very enjoyable game... until I got to the ending. It just ends. No congrats, no cutscenes, no story it just ends when you destroy the last objective in mission 21. I couldn't believe it so I looked it up online and saw that it is actually supposed to be like that... wow! It just ends...

Then I found out that there were apparently cutscenes which were never ported to the Steam version of the game... really sad to see a potentially awesome game let down by the developers like that.

Flight with space ship game.. I recommend this one beause its some what fun on a scale to 10 I say 5. It has great keyboard & mouse control setup for easy game play. Its low end so far are the graphics.

DarkSpookyPumpkinCapybara
DarkSpookyPump…

Controls are great although I had to shift mine from the typical wasd over one key to the right... The default for tilt left is W and tilt right is S. Makes no sense. Also there is one speed, no coasting, no stopping, but eventually boosting. Flight control is spot on with mouse aiming. For $0.50 cents its worth it(you have 37 hours before it goes back to full price). Its almost up there with Descent in quality.
No achievements, no multiplayer. So its like Skyrim... in space.

Goro Majima

A short and fun flight.

+ Your ship is constantly improving it's weapons, armor and speed.
+ The game feels more like something from early 2000 than 2009.

- The soundtrack is so bad I had to turn it off after my ears started bleeding.
- Although I didn't care for the story at all, I was kinda disapointed when the game just brought me back to the main menu after the final level. :/

Time to finish: 3,7 hours

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE STARTING:

Go into the game folder and cut/paste or move all the movie (Mpeg I think) files to a different directory. You can even watch them with a media player if you want. Just don't let the game use them. Also, the highest resolution seems buggy.

BUT, if you get past that it's a very fun little space shooter.

Project Freedom being game from almost 10 years ago, looks pretty good but ultimately failed to deliver solid gameplay. The plot is derivative, the action is derivative, and even the missions are kinda meh. Graphics are above average, but being that old, lacks widescreen support, and ultimately the UI will be stretched if you hacked it.

PF feels like a derivative of the Star Wars games; Rebel Assault and Starfighter. You fly by pointing the cursor in a certain direction, and the craft will fly that way as well as shoot that way. You have 3 secondary weapons aside from your cannons: "air" missiles, "ground" missiles, and "plasma" shot. Air missiles obviously are for against enemy fighters. Ground missiles are against ground structures and slowly moving ground targets, and finally, plasma is good against something directly ahead and/or stationery enemies (such as capital ships or ground structures).

The missions comes in either space type or ground type, just like Rebel Assault / Starfighter. Fly and try to shoot down bajillion fighters (okay, up to 20+ at a time) and bombers, and ground targets includes AA guns, missile launchers, SAM tanks, SAM walkers, and whatever structures they say you need to destroy, including shield generators, power plants, radar sites, comm towers, and so on. Same idea, they just look a little different.

There are no score kept, damage count, or even a kill board. You either advance, or not.

Your craft have shields, but obviously it won't take too many hits to bring them down. Your ship has some additional reserve energy to handle collisions, but after that you're toast. Your ship can receive upgrades between the 21 singleplayer campaign missions, and you can choose among firepower, shields, and speed. If you upgrade the speed first, you will eventually get access to "boost", which is basically afterburner that regenerates its fuel.

The missions are not particularly difficult except for Mission 15, where you suddenly had to escort a friendly ship while being overwhelmed by 20+ bandits. Why would they put the most difficult mission at 15 (out of 21 total) is anyone's guess.

The enemies are tolerable, not particularly bright. There is no "radar" per se, but then your interaction with the environment consists primarily of blowing stuff up, much of which is actually optional, as most structures on the ground is destructible, yet only the defenses and designated "targets" need to be destroyed. To destroy the ship, you shoot all its componets, like multiple engine pods, bridge, and other hull modules. WIth the ground bases, often you need to take down the generators to drop then sheilds, then destroy the shield projectors around the structures they're protecting. Then finaly, use your plasma and ground missiles to achieve the destruction.

The ground missions are barely tolerable. You often get fly in the canyons that you can't fly over (just like Rebel Assault!) so you're basically doing "trench runs". And you can't stop your fighter, but you can slow down a bit.

Controls are not that good, and the mouse can roam off the screen if you're running multiple monitors, forcing the game to stop and lose focus. Fortunately, it's relatively stable that way, as switch back to the game will resume automatically.

There is no automatic save game. You have to save manually after each mission, and it will even let you save in the middle of a mission (with quicksave).

All in all, this is an "also-ran". Either play the Star Wars versions, or play some true classics like Wing Commander or Freespace. The modern equivalents look and play better. Even at the low-low price of $2.99 it's a bit hard to recommend.

PizzaTime
PizzaTime

Got it on sale, but I wouldn't have otherwise.

It's simple and fun enough to get a nod, but it doesn't quite flesh out what it could be in its genre. Quick arcade shooter that will make you miss games like Wing Commander/Privateer/Freelancer more.

The guided missiles dont actually guide for piss.

SandWormJr
SandWormJr

It's a very decent old-tech space shooter for a buck or less. Your fighter is equipped with several types of blasters and missiles and slowly upgrades as you get through missions. Point and shoot, and try to stay alive. 8.5h to play through the entire campaign on 'explore' mode. NPC chatter gets repetitive. Decent bit of entertainment for a decent price.

Monroe
Monroe

Worth the 50 cents I paid for it. The voice acting is actually kind of funny, so often these cheap flight sims have terrible storylines and acting but this one made me laugh at the quips a few times. The secondary weapons are kind of useless and you get a lot of ammo but overall the combat was nice. I just wish it supported a joystick or game controller but a mouse works alright.

Spencerio
Spencerio

A very fun if unremarkable space shooter. For $3, and on sale just 89 cents, you really can't go wrong. Controls are simple, and you will occasionally be killed by missiles if you aren't careful. Missions are sort of wave based but the actual missions themselves do vary a nice amount. Honestly, quite a hidden gem as for an older game the graphics have held up quite nicely and framerate is amazing (On my 2013 laptop with 6gb ram and integrated graphics I got >200fps), and the game mechanics are entertaining. Solid 7.5/10 overall but on sale 10/10 for value.

FYI There is a stage-crashing bug I'm getting at the end of the last stage, essentially once you complete Stage 21 it doesn't save. Will look into because I'm not sure if there's supposed to be any final scene or anything. Anyway, 11 hours of fun out of a game I got for less than a dollar is incredible value for money.

Also as someone else has put, it will either be incredibly comical or incredibly annoying to constantly here "Right between the eyes!" and "Hey, we've got a new ace here!". For me it was amusing, but I can see how it could be cumbersome for some.

rogerdodge9
rogerdodge9

This game is actually really good fun, I would love if they would fix a few issues like proper 16.9 support and maybe add rumble feature, or even better a remastered version... but its great as it is especially for the price and I have made it look pretty good with some control panel tweaks - sharpening - and registry tweak for resolution. I would highly recommend this if you like space shooters.

TotalGyros
TotalGyros

Nah. It's a bit of a waste of time. Controllers don't feel natural and the aiming has this weird jittery quality, because of the aim-assist. Friendly AI is useless, which can be a problem during more complex objectives where they're supposed to be covering you. It's a very repetitive on top of all that. It's stupidly cheap on sales, but it's not worth your time.

Zero

I bought this as part of a "bundle" from STEAM. At first it did not work. But after a little research I got it working. I can say, after only playing on easy level, mission 11 so far, I like it. It is a very easy game to understand and the controls are easy to use with mouse/keyboard. My only negative, is, on easy level, the laser cannon NEVER runs out or overheats (may be this happens on later levels, or on a harder difficulty). Basically, it is too easy to fly around with cannons blazing and fire the odd air-ground missile in every mission (so far). I will say.......This is a good game. Now I'm off to play it. Take care all

If you´re looking for an arcade spaceship game, this is a great option.

Good graphics, lots of complimentary dialogues, even a quick save option. Cool techno soundtrack.

No sandbox, only a series of missions with very specific objectives.

I´ve been looking for nothing but space ship games in the last four months or so.

I´ve completed five of them, ditched four, and am currently playing this plus six others.

Of the six I´m playing now, this is the most balanced in terms of graphics, story line, game play, soundtrack, challenge, and variety of missions. (one game has more story but way less graphics; the other has greater graphics / complexity but is super hard and has no story... and so on)

Plus it´s cheap.

P.S.: it´s in indie games, so expect some glitches, like enemy tanks that can move through rock walls. Also, I remapped some keys and now I cannot strafe or boost

P.S: the boost is an upgrade, I managed to use it later in the game

Got this for around a dollar during a sale, and for that much you can't complain. I originally played the disc version several years ago when this was known as Starmageddon 2 / Space Interceptor, so I'm pretty familiar with this game. Story is pretty linear and ends abruptly, but the gameplay holds it up. Only problems with this game is that the music while good, gets repetitive due to the limited soundtrack, and the AI is broken at times. Still worth the price nonetheless.

SUGGESTED ON SALE ONLY
A simple game but fun game. Even now in 2022. The graphics is dated but the gameplay is very good. Very pick up and play game. Not complex in any way. The story is interesting.
Only issues I have is I wish the research reward system was better explained (with more details of what you'll get)
And the very annoying bug with videos in steam (easily fixed by removing the movies from the steam files).
FURTHER UPDATE
Finished the game and the story does take you to new places. Although it all just culminates in an alien attack on Earth. Fun short game. Not much depth in it though. And the video bug kinda spoils the game alot especially crashing the game at the final cutscene.

Great game, runs smoothly on old and new Pc's (tested on Win 10 and XP), game its self was and still is great fun, but game feels short after compleeting it. One minus i felt that steam version does not have Polish dub (which rocks btw). Overall great game for its price, i recomend it to everyone who has some spare money, and has free weekends to play it.
