Not great but not terrible.

Biggest issues were story: I never really knew where I was or what my purpose was. Other than the opening segment the only real story we are given was through flashback voice overs that don't really offer much (and come across as mildly homophobic)

Enemy encounters offer little variety but are often frustrating.

The room with jumping into the vent from the pipe was ragequit worthy.

Over all it felt more like a chore to play towards the end. Decent for a one person effort but not something I'd play again.

This is a fine game for $5 and a short little return back to the Half-Life universe. The fact something of this size was made by one person is incredible. I cannot even fathom the hours put into a project like this.

Is it perfect? Nah, but it's a perfect way to spend a few hours and have a little fun.

MY RATING: 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ✘ ✘ ✘ ✘ 6 / 10

Because I've been asked several times what I think about the game and if I can't write something about it, I thought I'd write a few lines about it.
When I started to write after playing and looked at my notes, I realized that short isn't really enough.

And actually I would rather rate the game neutrally and to be honest it took me a bit of effort to rate it negatively in the end. But the negative aspects were just bigger for me and I therefore decided to leave it as it is and give the game a few more stars for it. Sure, it would have been possible to give a low-star positive review, but that would have been harder for me to explain.

Despite what is to come, Richard Seabrook's work is to be commended and so am I. In any case. I have the greatest respect for someone who pulls through a project like this on their own and it was still fun in a way, even if I was more happy about the graphics than about the game as such.

As always, after playing I read one or the other review or what else is written about it on the net and I have to say that I was partly amazed but partly also can understand very well what was written together.
This ranges from the usual praise to "Prospekt isn't worthy of Half-Life." According to references on the Internet, Prospekt is a work by Richard Seabrook that was supposed to have been for the application to Valve, which probably didn't materialize.

In the game, he uses the Gearbox expansion Opposing Force, based around Soldier Shephard, who, according to his own statement, has probably invested around 2,500 hours in the mod. I couldn't verify whether that's true, but let's just leave it at that. That is of course a considerable period of time and somehow I understand that when you put so much work into a project, you also want something in return. So the mod was initially offered for around $10 and reduced to $5 over time and then it's on sale for around $3. In itself, the latter is also a fair price, but there are mods, no matter how you find them, that are free and if they are not, they are also measured against paid games or mods.

In this case, I feel that the mod should have been either free or permanently cheaper. That might have been less of an annoyance, because apart from the, in my opinion, extremely good graphics and the really good and suitable sound, this thing here actually has zero story and a few other bad qualities.

In the footsteps of Gordon Freeman ?

As Shephard, we clean up after Freeman in Nova Prospekt Jail.

Well, and that's about it for the story, because the actual plot about Shephard and Freeman fizzles out after a short time, Gordon is never seen and it's actually all about shootouts with the Combines.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2872612308
Even the beginning makes it difficult.
You listen to a speech by a Vortigaunt alien for minutes and then walk through dark prison cells without weapons or the like for a long time and have to solve simple environmental puzzles.
And the first point of criticism here is that Shephard doesn't get the pipe wrench but the crowbar, which actually belongs to Gordon and not to Shephard. Well, one can argue about it now, but I mean, if you make a successor into something, then you should stick to the roots, shouldn't you?

Furthermore, there are no innovations such as weapons or opponents and apart from a few headcrabs and antlions, we only fight against Combine soldiers. Well, one can also say here, does it always have to be something new? No, not necessarily, but I don't think it can often do any harm.

The level design, and by that I don't mean the graphics itself, seems unimaginative and usually ends in long and empty corridors or rooms that also seem sterile and clumsy.
The balance of the game tends more towards the opponents who discover you behind barriers, partly with automatic turrets and in larger areas early and from a great distance, shoot at you and kill you quickly.
The severity is due to the amount of enemies and their unusual resilience, which means that even headshots are not always enough to take them down. It can happen that for one or two combines a whole magazine from the submachine gun goes on before they bless the time. The Combines aren't the brightest and they prove that wonderfully by constantly throwing grenades around and hitting them from a great distance and very precisely. Therefore, the focus (depending on the level of difficulty set) is rather on overly slow progress, which somehow destroys the whole great flow of the game that you know from Half-Life 2.

Unfortunately, Prospekt completely lacks variety, which has always been one of Half-Life's great assets. The course of the game is always the same and unfortunately there are no real highlights. You shoot yourself from one room to the next by pressing a few buttons to open the doors. Unfortunately, there are some really awful bad spots in the game where an endless supply of enemies appears and you don't find the exit, which is sometimes easy to overlook, and you just die (over and over) in the carnage.

From about half of the game you end up without comment on a Combine space station or a spaceship (which I didn't quite realize, but it seemed to me), on which the seemingly endless and always the same-looking corridors are repeated and then the logic of the whole thing complete was lost.

Somehow it wasn't really fun anymore to simply press buttons without knowing how and what is influenced by them, to walk through corridors without knowing where you are actually going and to do things without knowing what purpose they serve.

The game just sucks at explaining the gameplay, the world and itself.

When I read the note "Return to Xen" on the shop page, I was really happy. Well, the joy turned into disappointment because the trip to Xen is just inserted somewhere and there is only one connection with 2 portals to get from A to B, which is where I have to go through. In addition, the trip takes less than 5 minutes and is anything but a graphic marvel.

So all in all Prospekt is rather a disappointing performance for me, unfortunately.

To be honest, I was hoping for more.

It just looks like the game consists of levels thrown together, I find the level of difficulty unfair and the wave fights, especially in the last third, where you have to manage without much cover, just unnecessarily prolong the game.

On the shop page it says "New AI improvements" which in this case only means that the opponents literally eat the bullets, "Better game flow with better balance" which just isn't the case, let alone "Return to Xen" which only takes a few minutes to speak is just plain wrong considering what's on offer.

I'm much better off with other paid titles like Black Mesa or the free ones like Entropy : Zero 2.

Pretty neat. Not too short. The map design look great but not going to lie, often times I feel so confused of what am I meant to do or where to go. A random door that was previously locked, suddenly open without telling the player and towards the end maybe the game's going too fast in a way... like why exactly do I have to go here and press these two buttons to proceed. Does my player character even know? You just gotta do it and something happens. Not a fan of combine soldier combat to begin with but even more so when there's no cover and 15 of them come out of doors simultaneously. Ended up playing last parts on easy so I don't start malding. I think it's money's worth little adventure, though. Don't expect it to be ep2 quality.

I thoroughly enjoyed this quick game, well worth the 5 bucks. Decently but not punishingly hard, other then when it throws hoards of enemies at you without break. A tip would be to save the game often.

Nonsense storyline, unfair gameplay, boring level design.

And the dev even abandon this game so yeah, it's just terrible.

Calling this game opposing force sequel? It doesn't even deserve that title.

Don't waste your money and time on this game.

So, I recommend playing this 2-2.5 hour game but only if you can get it on a steep sale for like $2. Even at $6 (used to be $10 I believe before the dev lowered the price) I don't believe it's worth it, and allow me to explain why (skip to end for consensus):

This is essentially a Half-Life 2 mod, but you have to pay for it. There are many HL2 mods out there for free that are of considerably better quality than this game. I think if this was a free mod it would not have garnered as much negative criticism, but the dev chose to charge for it, so it should be reviewed as such. Anything carrying a price tag is held to a higher standard than something for free.

Ok, onto the game itself. Prospekt puts you in the shoes of Adrian Shepherd, whom we last saw being put into stasis by the G-Man at the end of Half-Life Opposing Force. A neat premise, but Prospekt fails to deliver on the story in any meaningful way. At the start some Vortigaunts tell you you will need to help Freeman and meet him in Nova Prospekt, except you never meet Freeman and I have no idea how Shepherd "helps" Freeman. From there essentially the only actual story is flashbacks of your training before the Black Mesa mission. These segments have good VO for a project like this, and a couple jokes, but do not impact Prospekt's story in the slightest. You only spend three chapters in Nova Prospekt, before going through some teleporters and eventually emerging in a Combine station in Outer Space overlooking the Earth. You then make you way through this and explode the core by pressing 4 buttons. Underwhelming final battle imo. You can also definitely tell the dev just gave up and wanted to finish in the last 2 chapters. They are very short, and the last chapter has two(!) separate rooms where you have to run to two buttons across large rooms and press them both to open a damn door.

The first 3-4 chapters of this game are incredibly dark. I mean what the hell, why is it so damn dark? This irritated me more than anything else in the game. There are ways to create a moody, sinister atmosphere while also being able to see the environment enough to properly play the game.

While the game has some decent level design in certain areas, (you even go back to Xen for an incredibly brief segment) all the environments save for Xen are just rehashes of HL2 environments. Very little new art or assets aside from some particle effects, which for a paid game is incredibly disappointing. There's some quality pipe platforming in classic Half-Life fashion as well as some basic, uninteresting puzzles which usually amount to pressing one or more buttons.

One good thing about Prospekt is that it does have some fun set-piece battles, particularly midway through the game with certain blue three-legged creatures.

If you actually read this whole review, you may be wondering why I'm recommending this because I was mostly negative in my review. I only recommend this to big fans of HL2 and its mods, at a steep sale price. There is some fun to be had and if you're just itching for (paid) HL2 mod content, 2 dollars is worth it in my book.

I wanted to write a long comprehensive review but it doesn’t feel like it’s worth the time in this case

I’ll spare you the details and let you know that if you’re fine with a paid game offering 2,5 hours of gameplay then go ahead and buy Prospekt, Otherwise don’t bother.

The visuals are stunning and the gameplay is decent but it’s the level design, lack of any variety and the lack of a proper story that makes me not recommend this game

A bit short, and a bit repetitive. There is some story telling going on, but it doesn't really say anything. You just kinda... go along the levels. Could be a bit longer for the money, and achievements would be nice as well. Overall, buy it if you need a HL fix. For non-HL-fans it will be most likely boring.

Prospekt should not be paid. I completed it in one sitting and only took me a bit over 3 hours to get through, and I got this game for $14.50 in Australian pricing, I know it has dropped since then but just not worth it.
Some of the fights felt cheap. Some puzzles were so poorly designed just no-clipping is more fun. Your usually getting flooded with enemies and 9/10 times you don't have enough health or ammo to get past. The soundtrack was super lame and just poorly designed.
The few positives I can say are not enough for me to recommend it. Looks good. Not terribly written story. Some puzzles were alright and okay voice acting.
I know the guy that made this has put a lot of effort in and he has been listening to what people have to say about it, I hate saying this but Prospekt just isn't a good game, but at least it is still better then Hunt Down the Freeman. 4/10.

Even though, this game is supposed to be an Opposing force sequel, in terms of gameplay it feels more like blue shift.
Neither new weapons nor enemies were added. Also Shepherd is wearing HEV instead of Hecu vest. Just using CS: Source hands would be all right. The level design and puzzles are good enough but most of the times you just fight combine soldiers over and over. The game is missing some dynamic. It’s not a terrible mod, I think that voice lines are somewhat good for a fan made project, but it’s just not that great like other mods in store.
It’s just average or a bit above average. It has some potential but it’s not quite there yet.

K usually I don't do serious reviews but I'm gonna do one for this game because it has so much potential. This came out in 2016, and the last time we heard from this was when the price was dropped. No word since, so now we're stuck waiting for updates.

The Good:
VISUALS. Everything in this game is beautiful. The lighting is super well done, and Although Nova Prospekt doesn't look that stunning, it is immediately made up for with the amazing combine architecture on the space station you later board.

The Voice Acting. It's amazing. What else can I say about it?

The soundtrack is easily one of my favorites from any Half-Life Mod. Will definitely give a listen.

The Bad:
You play as Adrian Shepherd, yet you wear a greyish hev suit for some reason, and use a crowbar.

Some encounters with the combine are pretty terrible, as you find yourself cowering in cover at 14 hp with no ammo while getting shot at by like 15 soldiers. There. Are. So. Many. Soldiers.

You move all over the place. Enter one portal, fight combine for 15 minutes, then go into another portal. It just feels like the story is going nowhere, and you just go from one environment to the next. The pacing is terrible.

There's no story like, at all. It's super barebones.

How things can be fixed:
If they just tuned the amount of enemies in some areas, then a lot of the gameplay would be fixed.

Instead of teleporting from place to place every 10 minutes, why not save a teleportation element for a specific and important moment? Instead of being in Nova Prospekt for a bit and then getting into the teleporter from hl2's last nova prospekt level, why not go through Nova Prospekt a bit more, and saving the teleportation for the other giant teleporter that you enter a bit afterwards? If that is done, then it has more importance in the story, or what is supposed to be a story.

More story elements. More characters to interact with. Maybe some prisoners in Nova Prospekt that say they are trying to achieve a goal, so you actually have a purpose and a goal to achieve. Sure, you have a core to destroy in a combine ship, but that is never presented to you or taught to you. Opposing Force was all about the HECU, and the different soldiers around you backing you up in encounters. What if this was done in some way? I could go on and on, but there's just too much to cover. So much potential for a great story to be told here with levels servicing the story.

Welp that's it. I hope we get updates soon, because the potential of this game is just gigantic.

10/10 would hecu again

IGN Note: too many hecu

This game was a Wild ride, Now Listen, I know you have questions, Is it worth the price? Yes. Is the Game-play exciting and story make sense? For Sure. Now for the final question. Would I recommend this game over Blueshift or Uplink, Maybe even portal? Yes, I would. But I would be mistaken if i didn't tell you to play opfor first. SCT, For making this, You have my respect and thank you for the experience where i carried a rock that i named muble to the first teleport which i couldn't get it through, I feel like this is gonna be the end of Shepards story, I wish it wasn't but valve just cant count to three. Don't know why the hate. This mod was at least as good as I'd hoped. It's not perfect, but the combat and level design are satisfying, the story is entertaining, and the difficulty (on normal) was successfully balanced. So this is apart of a larger review following my decision to go play and review every entry in the Half-Life franchise. While I probably won't be playing 'Hunt Down the Freeman' anytime soon I thought I would still include it in my larger review and due to this game also being a paid spin-off of Half-Life I thought it was only fair I included it too.

Prospekt :

This game is advertised as a sequel to the original games first expansion 'Opposing Force'. And if you wanna really understand this game you gotta understand OF. You play as Adrian Shephard who is apart of the special forces who come to wipe out those who were of a witness of the resonance cascade. The original expansion takes place concurrent with the events of the base game and has some pretty neat tie-ins that makes the story feel interconnected. The game has a lot of mechanics that aren't in the base HL and an arsenal of weapons that differs from Gordon's. Overall OF gives you not just more Half-Life but also shows a perspective that's worth showing in which the follow up 'Blue Shift' while still has its place (especially with the context of HL2) isn't nearly as intriguing. OF also develops a relationship between Adrian Shephard and the G-Man in more of a way then we ever get in Gordon's story where you are actively working with him to add to the destruction of the Black Mesa facility. In the end, the G-Man detains Adrian keeping him alive because he "reminds him of himself" but believes he's a dangerous witness. Regardless of how odd that sounds, it is a pretty well made spin-off and fits right in with the original HL Collection.

So I think the thought process behind 'Prospekt' was do 'Opposing Force' again but during the events of Half-Life 2. The issue is where the original Half-Life takes place within the huge and vast facility of Black Mesa, each chapter of the sequel has you visit new and different areas of City-17 and the surrounding country so instead they decided its narrative would take place during a smaller section of the game where Gordon Freeman has to go through the Combine ran prison to rescue Eli Vance. It's definitely one of the most interesting locations we get to visit and the idea of experiencing it again had some general appeal. On top of that having a follow up tie-in story-line where Adrian Shephard who once was tasked to potentially kill Gordon Freeman was to now in-directly help him actually sounded pretty cool and gave our silent tritagonist some interesting depth. But this game isn't that. It isn't any of that at all.

This game starts off with Vortigaunts talking to Adrian giving a brief summary of past events and whats going on now. You see the G-Man very briefly which is something that just randomly happens throughout the rest of the game, and not in a traditional Half-Life way, it's literally like a jump scare. Somehow the Vortigaunts take Adrian out of stasis and place him in the longest hallway within the prison. There was like a hundred dead Ant-lions which I guess is a nod at the fact that Gordon uses the Ant-lion army during this section. Immediately it becomes abundantly clear that the creator lacks an understanding of level-design and how to ease a player into things. While I know this may be a dumb thing to criticize because in a way everyone playing should of already played HL2, it's still fair to say someone out there may play this without doing so for it being a standalone game instead of a mod that requires a copy of HL2. When you figure out the little puzzles blocking you from just walking through the halls you will eventually be greeted to endless enemy ant-lions. Very early you will have pretty much all of Gordon's HL2 weapon set. You are also greeted with very confusing and abstract dialogue sequences where the screen becomes super saturated and you hear just random and pointless banter from what I understand are other members of the special force group prior to the Black Mesa incident. This is something that also just keeps on happening until the very end of the game and not one second of it seems relevant. I didn't know when Adrian was talking or if he was ever actually one of the voices I was hearing. There were some your mom jokes, your wife jokes, and a back and forth about the G-Man checking out Adrian with some great gay jokes about it. The voice acting is very very rough and felt so goddam cringey, yet was the only form of storytelling the game offered. While Half-Life has always had a weird way of telling its story and isn't necessarily something worth harping about its never been done in such an abstract way and I'm just so confused by this choice. After the huge swarms of Ant-Lions you eventually start battling more and more waves of escaping Combine members, it always seemed like there was an extra 6 guards in every fight with some showing up at random times. There's a small section with some Hunters which is pretty annoying in an enclosed space, but was a nice little break from the same two enemies over and over again. But after this section was the huge drop-off point for me and any potential of a cool HL2 tie-in is lost. There's absolutely zero indication that what you did had any effect on Gordon's adventure and you just end up getting teleported to a random Combine ship. After this the game just becomes a repeating cycle of huge open rooms where you have to fight way too many enemies at once, where as soon as you think you killed the last one four more would come in awkwardly as if they missed the original cue. The puzzles consisted of just pressing green or red buttons until something changed with sometimes having to wait for long periods of time for it to happen without the player even knowing its happening. I got to a point where I felt like I was playing on auto-pilot but due to the way fights always turned out I still had to try, constantly telling myself "I've made it this far." The ending was by far the worst part and was the breaking point of both the game and myself. You enter a room with four sections with a button in each one and for whatever reason I experienced a 15 minute sequence of either the game breaking or the developer running out of ways to extend this games length. I would press one button where the section was green -> Combine units come in -> I kill them -> nothing happens for 30 seconds -> the section turns green again -> repeat. I went through this seven times until eventually more combine units came swarming in and I was knocked off the railing where I then opened up the console, turned on Godmode and Noclip. Killed all the units pressed the button for the 8th time, and something different finally happened. THE GAME ENDS. The G-Man just looks at you briefly and uh thats it.

I really don't wanna be that harsh because I'm sure the creator did it with nothing but love for the original game but I just don't understand why this is being sold and advertised in the way that it is. Its the weakest parts of Half-Life 2 amped up to eleven and it doesn't really capture anything of value. If you have the random urge to play through this like I did just don't have any high expectations. This is nowhere as bad as the colossal failure that is 'Hunt Down the Freeman' and if you enjoy other Half-Life 2 mods I'm sure you can find enjoyment out of this one, though I wouldn't encourage charging for them when things just don't seem to work and there is no long term plan on fixing them.

Hans-Dieter-Karl-Heinz-Holger
Hans-Dieter-Ka…

First of all, it took me 1.8 hours to finish the game. I'd say, that I can accept that for the discounted price I paid.
Second, I did not care for the protagonist at all. Why? His memory filled background story was coated with just cliché soldier attitude and did not cath me at all - I have no idea how that (I want to say US Marines) propaganda bullshit is connected to the HL universe.
Moving on to level design. Boy, oh boy. I loved the concept art of the combine levels. Really neat details and that alien-esque feeling with blue and green colours, blocky design as well as a perfect texture mix. BUT, and that is a huge but, those maps are way too dark in total. From the beginning on I always needed my flashlight, not being able to see enemies, though I cranked up the brightness already.
Unfortunately, the game was, for the most part, really linear. In the beginning there were almost only "find shit in the darkness and climb that" tasks, whereas after that first part it was "run there, press one or multiple buttons and use the next elevator to your convenience". In between all that, it was mainly Combine encounters - could have used a some spice, since those were almost always wave based - or Combine were just waiting for you.
I am a bit torn. But I think, that if it wasn't for that aforementioned "soldier propaganda" circus I'd recommend it. Because you have a decent base on which you can further develop your skills - and I hope to see the day when that happens.
Other than that, I can't full-heartedly recommend this game.
Keep up the work!

I had Prospekt on my wishlist for almost 5 straight years. I was always interested, seeing as I love the Source Engine, and figured that considering the asking amount for it, there must be something good here. However, I was always put off by the negative reviews. I finally picked this up for about $5 AUS during a discount, and played through it. So, what do I think?

It's hard to recommend Prospekt. It's very clearly janky, and not quite finished, and unfortunately, it will never be finished. How unfinished is it? Well, let me give you an example. The developer commentary, the one listed on the main menu as a primary option, front and centre? Doesn't work. Oh, the files were recorded, sure, you can locate them within the games steamapps folder, but upon launching the mode, you won't find nodes anywhere, because there are none, because the game wasn't programmed properly. Same with the achievements, that is to say, there are none. Oh, sure, there's a list, and a menu option, but it's empty.

So, yeah, those negative reviews weren't just fucking around, huh?

It's a real shame, since I would've liked to see why the developer made the choices he did, but without appropriate context, that ain't happening. Outside of things like that, there are several moments within the game that just feel off. Climbing ladders and entering vents can be much more difficult than in HL2, due to how they are placed. You tend to get stuck near the top of ladders, and need to jump off. There's a situation in my mind that really suck out where a vent was placed just slightly above "ground" level, but you couldn't just walk into it. You had to perform a jump crouch into it, which isn't that bad, but you only expect that to be a thing for vents placed up high, not a vent placed only a few centimeters above ground level. It's very weird, and can really kill the flow.

Now, that's kind of a small issue, really, but the game does have bigger problems. At times, there is a bit of a lack of direction, where enemies will continue to respawn and will continue attacking you until you run away, but this isn't made very clear, as in most cases, there isn't an immediate disaster happening, and at times, you are in a perfect position to hold out. Only after wasting all your shotgun ammo do you realize "oh, guess I was supposed to leave, huh?", and you finally decide to fuck off. Speaking of a lack of direction, the first part of the game is exceptionally dark, like, annoyingly so. Flashlight use is a necessity, but this brings up another really weird game design choice. The flashlight lasts for a really long time on a full charge, and recharges extremely quickly. After experiencing it for a while, you start wondering why the flashlight needed to have a battery in this game at all, as it no longer feels like a resource you need to manage, but just an annoying thing that stops working for a few seconds every now and then.

What about combat? Well, it's... acceptable, I guess? The weapons all behave the same way as they do in HL2. As for the enemies... well, do you like bullet sponges? Because that's what happened here. Enemies were made far more tanky. I'm not a fan of this. Simply increasing enemy HP is an extremely lazy way of upping the difficulty, and makes combat less satisfying. Thankfully, this is at least a little negated by the fact that ammo for strong weapons is relatively plentiful, but that doesn't stop the fact that it often takes 2 shotgun shots at close range to take down a basic combine soldier, and even a double barrel may not be enough for a combine elite. Hell, even the goddamn revolver takes 2 shots to take down a basic soldier. I mean, seriously? The hell is up with that?

Combine are the primary enemy here. There are a few zombies at the start, a few antlions, and a few manhacks, but otherwise, it's all combine. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about that, but the fact that the level design doesn't really allow the AI to take advantage of their surroundings means that it can all feel a bit silly sometimes, with hordes of combine coming down long hallways, one after another. It can feel rather amateurish at times, but isn't offensively bad.

Now, I've been fairly negative so far, but there are positive qualities to this. Voice acting is overall quite good, and though the story integration, at times, kinda sucks (stopping you near dead in your tracks to let audio play out), it's clear that an effort was made to be engaging. Though level design doesn't facilitate great combat, in most other regards, it's quite good! Environments look nice and well put together, several sections are quite fun to navigate though, and, again, it's clear that effort was made to make things look nice and fit together sensibly. Credit where it's due. There's nothing exceptionally weird or out of place, and going from located to location is fairly interesting.

The game is also fairly short, at around 2 hours or so to complete it (and longer if you get stuck on what is kind of an awful final battle that has an extremely easy solution but doesn't make that sense at all to do), but it doesn't outstay its welcome, and never really feels like it's wasting your time. It also comes with some additional "stealth" bonus maps, but these are... well, it's basically the most primitive sort of thing you can imagine. Small maps where you stay in the shadows, wait for enemies to walk past, and reach the exit. Not worth bothering with.

The question is, why am I giving this game a positive rating? Well, despite everything I've said, I do believe the game carries enough value, particularly when the price is low, to justify spending some of your afternoon to go through it. It has at least a few interesting moments within it, and, again, the effort put into it is clear. It's not offensively bad (like Hunt Down the Freeman, for example), but it is certainly not very polished at all. If I could give this game a neutral score, I would, but since I have to choose, I'll be nice here.

It's nothing special, it's janky, and there are much better free mods out there, but it's not quite bad, and has at least a few sections which were genuinely interesting and well made. If you go into this with the expectation of playing what is essentially an average map pack for HL2 (albeit one you have to pay for), you'll be happy enough, but if you raise your hopes any higher, disappointment will quickly set in.

It's not actively bad, just uninspired. i recon the game is worth checking out.
while it seems half-lifey, really the game is a lot of the same boring bits. darkness does not mean its atmospheric, and seemingly pretty but same looking corridors are just same looking corridors.
its missing very basic responsiveness. what you need to do isn't stupidly hidden, but its not naturally obvious. what you've done by pressing a button is for some reason a puzzle. combat is, again, all the same and the maps aren't made for good combat. constant headglitching, npcs not given opportunities to do anything interesting, not great visibility at times. hard mode is hard, but in a dull 'spam him with enemies' way, something easy doesn't fix.
i couldn't beat the last core fight initially, the level seems just slapped together quickly to look neat. it would look like you could defend a station to the side of you because there is a clear view to the console, but the elite combine stands to the side so you just barely can't hit him. the way walk-throughs do it doesn't seem to be expressed in any way in game. maybe that's just me not getting it, but either way it all could have been just more tuned and involved and more interesting.

A short but really nice game in the good old Half Life 2 universe. It has it's share of action, spooks as well as a lot of puzzle moments. I liked the level design past the nova prospekt part, especially up until the end. Ending levels in my opinion could easily be a part of the official HL2 or episodes in terms of fun and believable design and overall feel.

Pros:
- Cool level design in mid-up until to last sections of the game.
- Actual voice acting and music.
- Fun puzzles.
- A nice level of overall polish (no stuff like NODE_GRAPH_OUT_OF_DATE like some games like to spam on each level start).
- General feel and atmosphere in my opinion comparable to that of HL2 / EP1.

Few cons:
- In my opinion the intro sequence is a bit too long with the vortigaunt dialogue.
- In the first few levels it's sometimes hard to get where you should go (usually tiny vents that are not really marked in a way that can be easy to spot).
- Too short of course, as is every half life game :D
- It took me a sec to understand that the player is having some sort of flashback-internal dialogue but that could be just me.

It's a really nice indie fan game to spend an evening on if you're a fan of the HL universe.

Now, I read the reviews for this mod. It made me skeptical. Reports of bugs, low quality voice acting, bad story. However, the developer stated that he had released an update for this year's summer sale, I had hopes. I can gladly say that I was far from disappointed. This Mod is one for the ages and I feel does our boy Adrian well. Worth the price. I'd buy it again, honestly.

I saw people keep comparing this with Hunt Down The Freeman.
As a source enthusiast, I can't deny the effort that both of them put on the game. Source Engine is a tough thing to work with. They both are great games to play. But something that differs Prospekt from HDTF to be more loved, is the great technical development and the incredible map design. On the other side, HDTF brought a new style to the Half-Life community. New mechanism, Cutscenes and New weapons (that most of the community members prefer the legacy style games/mods) along with LOTS OF technical issues and the awful level design. They tried to make the game like half-life, to make the player find the way and complete the objective without needing any journals/minimaps, but the maps are designed pointlessly huge. So you keep hating the game more and more while you progress into next chapters. But in this case, Prospekt showed off the ability of the developer - Richard Seabrook, and the reputability of continuing Half-Life: Opposing Force Story with some adorable flashbacks that preserves the origin of the lore. This game is more like a master level pack for Half-Life 2 and got no new mechanics like HDTF, making it praiseworthy for the OG fans of Half-Life series. But it might be a platitudinous pick for someone who has tried all of the free mods on Steam, or boring for the new fans. And also, Prospekt can look much more better if Rich used an image upscale app or sth like this to increase the quality of the textures and wipes out the 2004 textures with the modern looking ones.

Just imagine how amazing HDTF will be if both Prospekt devs and HDTF devs would have worked on it.

If you're looking for a Half-Life 2 entry that is mainly focused on combat, and you don't mind sterile levels, short story and simplistic narrative, then you can give Prospekt a try. This mod offers many arena-like maps which Combine soldiers gladly take advantage of with their improved AI as they try to corner player more aggressively and unpredictably, providing some unique challenge not seen in the base game.
But it's the only positive I can say about this mod. The rest of its aspects, although structurally correct, are sadly too bland to be memorable.

¤ βℓооđч ¤ Nico-Kun!

Prospekt is a Half-Life 2 mod that's gotten a commercial release, and it starts with an interesting premise. Set during the events of Half-Life 2, you play as Adrian Shephard, who's been freed from G-Man's grasp by a group of Vorts in order to assist Gordon during his raid on Nova Prospekt. Sounds cool so far, right? After all, I always wanted a spin-off Half-Life game that had Shephard go on his own adventures in the timeframe of Half-Life 2 (though personally, I think the G-Man would've used Adrian as an asset during the time he couldn't reach Gordon). Anyway, I digress.

The game starts, as I said, with a really cool premise. You're in Nova Prospekt, you know Gordon is somewhere tearing shit up alongside Alyx. You come across Antlions, Combine soldiers, and headcrabs (even Zombines!), and then... The game does nothing with said premise. Not even halfway through the game (which, by the way, is very short), you get a callback to Opposing Foce: you reach Nova Prospekt's teleportation room just as Gordon and Alyx left, and are forced to go into the portal yourself, only to be teleported... Somewhere else? After a brief teleportation mishap montage (which takes you to locations such as Isaac's lab, a church, and what looks like the Borealis), you end up at some Combine facility. And from then on, you fight Combine soldiers after Combine soldiers, going through dozens of hallways that look mostly the same, while Shephard keeps having these weird auditive flashbacks of his time in the HECU. There is a few interesting set pieces, but nothing that really makes you think there's a goal or purpose. The game feels extremely monotone.

Graphics-wise, well, it's a Half-Life 2 mod, so it looks as good as Half-Life 2 does. The gunplay is exactly the same (you get all HL2 weapons besides the Gravity Gun and the Pheropods), and the sound design is decent. Still, I just can't recommend this game, not even with a discount, as it just feels underwhelming, with no sense of story or plot.

This mod will let you be Adrian Shephard from Half-Life : Opposite Forces once again, and now fight for Gordon Freeman then humanity.... yep, that for short. If you see this game base on Half-Life 2 story and expect it to be fun and overflowing with stories as Half-Life 2 been then you may disappointment because story and even gameplay is gone beyond that line.

You will find that only 1st chapter that closest to "that what is Half-Life been", from 2nd to the lastest chapter, game experience change from Half-Life to be like CoD, most time you will have to run and gun, and you will often found yourself is in killing zone and being forced to survived to go further, and that isn't complainment because I had fun with it.

For game story, there is less then nothing told you what going on, you will found that you may ask yourself for many time like "Why am I here?" or "Why I did that?", only first chapter that have some story to tell and.............. yep, it really slow, you may even get little annoying with it, after that, it have only voices of Shephard's teammate from time to time till the end which is no relate to actions in scenes.

Overall, if you like to try different taste of Half-Life 2 that it could be then I recommend you play this mod at least once, I sure you somehow will happy with money you paid. And for people who never play in hard difficult, especially who never play this mod, I strongly recommend to play in hard difficult, I ensure you will found yourself in a lot of "WTF" situations tills the lastest chapter.

I have mixed feelings about this mod. There are parts that are fun to play, and others where the only way I could progress was to noclip through doors that would not open. It isn't always clear what you need to do, and I found myself running around (and then noclipping when after watching a walkthrough realized that a door wasn't opening). It's obvious a lot of care went into making this, and overall I enjoyed it more than detested it. Would I play it again? Maybe.

A couple of things. First, the fact this was created by one person is nothing short of amazing. I get some of the criticism, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this was a huge project for one person to undertake and the execution wasn't bad. Second, this isn't the Opposing Force sequel you were hoping for, but it's the closest we're gona get and you know what? It was still really fun.

There were a couple parts that were buggy, and a few times where the soldiers didn't acknowledge the player (these were rare and usually after several other soldiers already spawned and fought the player). Some parts became repetitive and as much as I loved going through the Combine architecture it began to blur together after a while. That said, I personally thought the voice acting was really great (especially the flashback voiceover moments), the new Combine units you cross are cool, and the atmosphere set in each major setting was appropriate and immersive, albeit a bit repetitive.

TL;DR - it's worth a playthrough especially if you miss Shephard and gunning down Combine elites. Cut the developer some slack, it's not perfect but it's really well done for a solo project. I thought it was good fun.

This game is a banger, and really tough on high difficulty. It's a standard FPS arsenal (crowbar, pistol, smg, shotgun, grenades, AR, and launcher) but it's pretty well rounded as it is anyway. You run the gauntlet against waves of enemies and are replenished with armor and health in between, as well as hearing Shephard's marine buddies' voice flashbacks. Certain sections are designed to be incredibly challenging to assault and very easy to die in. Others can feel cramped and claustrophobic paired with the types of foes you encounter. It gets hellish. Sadly Shep doesn't get a light machine gun to sweep with this time. 8.5/10

However, this is not a story-based or even puzzle-indulging journey, except for a few minor escape-the-rooms. This is a straight bullet fest through a dark metal prison, only obliquely spiritually related to the Half-Life franchise, a bit of light fanfiction with recycled assets from HL2. Shooting things is fun. Don't worry about it, really.

Prospekt was a mod that interested me for a while. Sure, the YouTubers were a bit harsh on it before the update but it's really not a bad mod. But at the same time, I don't think it's worth $5.99 with the number of flaws present. Don't think I'm saying the mod is bad, because it's got a lot of potential. People who compare this with HTDF are just insane, because while HTDF was a failure that didn't even try, Prospekt at least tried and did very well in a lot of areas, but does have some of it's issues which can be improved.

The story was confusing to follow along with, especially after entering Nova Prospekt. Why are we going back into Nova Prospekt after Gordon Freeman had already destroyed it after leaving in the portal with Alyx? What are the Vortigaunts having us destroy and why? It left me with quite a few unanswered questions.

And as another reviewer mentioned, the Xen part was an extreme letdown. You're only in Xen for not even five minutes, and you just jump from some floating islands to another, activate another teleporter, and leave Xen. Then we're on some...orbiting Combine base floating in Earth's orbit and we have to destroy some core? I really didn't get it.

Some areas of level design were a bit confusing as well. Certain doors or vents had no indication (or even slight landmarks indicating their presence) at all, so I actually had to use noclip a few times to find my way around. The worst thing about the levels though, were the elevator speeds. Some of the elevators move so slowly and tediously, I end up noclipping to the next level or area. A few of the puzzles were repetitive as well, like the parts near the end where you have to press buttons in certain rooms to open one central door, a puzzle repeated 2-3 times.

The game doesn't explain things that well, which is a shame, cause Prospekt has a lot of potential as a mod. There were parts of it I enjoyed, and parts I didn't.

Prospekt is a good mod, sure, don't think I'm saying it isn't, because I'm not. It's a good mod, but it has the potential of being great, and never really unlocked that potential.

Yes, it is nowhere near well designated as Minerva but honestly it feels like majority of negative publicity caused because that is not a free mod, rather a retail game. Prospekt.... What do I even say about this game?

The level designs, puzzles, gameplay, are all just.... no.

The 40 minutes of this game that I played are the minutes I want back (same as the money i spent on this game)

For me, this game didn't have a "Half life" feeling (other than what it is based on), but it was honestly cool to play as Adrian Shepard because it was something new and different from playing as Gordon freeman.

But although the concept is decent, they didn't execute the idea very well. I don't feel like playing the rest of the game because I feel like II'm going to have to right another long review as this one already is.

WJMacGuffin
WJMacGuffin

I'm impressed with all the work that went into this game, but I'm afraid I cannot recommended.

Doorways are oddly tight, like they're just wide enough for my body. But if you don't approach dead on and right in position, you hit a corner and s l o w d o w n so much that, if anyone wants to shoot you, they will. Don't mind dying, do mind dying because touching a door frame means going slower than a sleepy toddler.

The ammo and health packs are much more rare than in HL. Some gamers love having almost no ammo and health for most of the game. I am not one of them. You know how you wonder sometimes if you should reload a save and see if you can get through with that much more health and armor? Now, do that after every scene.

Running doesn't run. I have no idea why. I hear that distinctive whoosh noise, but either they nerfed running to make the game harder or I cannot remember HL.

I absolutely love the concept of this game, so I hope whoever is working on this keeps at it and polishes it up.

It is OK. I got it on sale, so I only spent about $5. Too many dark maps which makes it difficult to play. There are a lot of maps where you are crawling through the duct work, which gets tedious. Once you get past the first 2 or 3 levels it gets better.

It feels like an unpolished mod that has some good ideas hidden behind all the flaws. Unfortunately the game simply wasn't fun to play. A lot of vent hunting, weird platforming and overall fairly poor at guiding the player where to go. Timed instant kill lazer puzzles aren't very fun either.

Some arenas looked like they could be really fun combat encounters but then then nothing happens. Throws a lot of enemies against the player but isn't very creative with it.

Some of the Combine architecture looks great nd some teleporters are visually spectacular. Other areas, like Xen, are very unpolished and mediocre looking. I think this could have been something special with more playtesting and polish.

Creature
Creature

Despite the reviews being mixed I enjoyed this game. It wasn't the sequel I expected, but I wasn't disappointed. Yes, I did get stuck on a few sections and the performance was occasionally a little poor, but I have to say that the combat encounters and level design, although a little bland sometimes, still managed to be decent. I also thought the soundtrack and picturesque environments elevated the experience quite a bit.

Kinda saddens me, aeons ago there was an announcement for another chapter for the game called Black Forest. Too bad, this game deserved better. I'm just a sucker for HL2.

Despite its length (as well as waiting sections) I found this game very enjoyable.

If I recommend this game?

Generally no, but for fans of the Half-Life/Portal universe it is worth a playthrough for the sake of experiencing this story.

Is it for this audience worth the price?

For the sake of supporting the creator the price is fine. If you still have concern, make sure to Follow the game so you get notified whenever it is on sale.

My thought about the game itself:

Starting off in Nova Prospect, the puzzles are interesting, although some places are a tad dark and one struggles to see what to do and where to go. Despite seeing closed-off corridors everywhere, the feeling of linearity is still ruining the immersion due to the lack of actual locked gateways and doors and such.

The story goes on without actually doing that much in Nova Prospect before we for some reason are jumping into a Combine portal and leaves the place, and that is not even half the game. The rest is endless combine structures and endless combines to be slaughtered.
At a point we actually.... how to put it without spoiling the story.... the combine gets an opportunity to actually murder our character just as they have been trying to do throughout the game, but for some reason they don't???

At the end we get a last fight with the objective to cause a core meltdown for the sake of eliminating a combine base, and it's that unoriginal that it's not even worth hiding in a spoiler. The objective from Nova Prospect is long gone, and what we do stopped being interesting a long time ago.

Every night this weekend I spent a little time working on the progression of this game.

Brilliant puzzles, good storytelling, eerie atmosphere, and just enough fight scenes that it's not repetitive. It was also a great homage to "Opposing Force".

Good job, Dev! :D Been meaning to play this one for a while. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Pretty boring and repetitive. Unless this gets updated, I couldn't recommend this. There are better mods that you can download right here on Steam for free, such as Entropy Zero.
