Why is Razz such a pushover in this? Why has he lost his character strengths from the first game?
That is fundamentally what I can't stand about this. Raz is a wussy now. Instead of the absolute determined, self confident badass we had in the first game.

Technically the game is great, but narratively it's lame.

Levels are pretty, fighting is better than Psy1 but. Man. The story is just a nose dive as far as I'm concerned. I didn't have fun. The twists are... alright but not satisfying. It could have all been done so much better. No one respects Raz at all. The other "junior psychonaughts" are just utterly shoe horned in. Sasha and Mia are still great. Your forced to go through an uncomfortable gay storyline. The villain is funny, but lame. There are really meaningless character moments. Aii.

Could have been great. Nearly was. Sadly, wasn't.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the fleshing out of Raz's family. Also, the levels were just as entertaining as the first game and I enjoyed finding every collectible, minus a few annoying figments. I can only think of two criticisms. One, difficulty in this game felt unbalanced to me. It's not impossible but enemies do insane damage. Two, it felt like the interns didn't have much of a role. They were just kind of around, although I did enjoy the interaction involving Sam and pancakes, lol.

I enjoy how they made the figments more easier to keep tract of and find in Psychonauts 2. They listened to alot of nitpicks and small issues with the first game which makes it easier for completionists. The mental health angle is a bit on a nose and obvious than the first game which I don't enjoy as much. I also personally found the first game had more interesting levels although I haven't finished the game as of current writing and these are nitpicks. This is a very faithful dream-sequel :)

While the concepts featured in this game are not quite as creative as in the first game, the level design and gameplay in Psychonauts 2 feels much nicer, so much so that I actually went through the effort to get 100% completion, which is quite rare for me in these types of games. Psychonauts 2 is a worthy sequel. If you enjoyed the first game, you're gonna love this one.

If God had to pick his favorite video game, it would for sure be this masterpiece.............. that or Earthbound. Actually, it would be Earthbound, but this would be a really close second.

Amazing game with an equally amazing soundtrack, all the areas are fun to explore and find all the collectibles you can. I would say this game is totally worth getting at both full price and on sale.

never would have expected it but wow a 2nd game.

If you seen my review on the first game then you know this series means a ton to me it is one of my favorite games i spent hours at bestbuy playing the first one just to be able to play it then when i finally got it sheeesh it was amazing.

I never thought they would make a 2nd game to see where Raz's story continues from where it left off in the first game
the art is still amazing, the new characters all have unique personalities and aesthetic. as a fan of the first game im excited to explore more of this world and learn the lore!

game-play is smoother than the previous game.

if you are a fan of these types of games check out the first game and come back and check this one out!

This game harkins back to the days of older cartoon shows, back when shows were not afraid to show some pretty dark stuff while also having fun in general. It has all the best parts of the old school collect-a-thons with all the experience of modern game development.

All in all it is just fun.

If you enjoyed the first Psychonauts, you will love this game. If you haven't played the original yet, I recommend you do that before tackling this game, as the stories are interconnected, though it isn't necessary.

Everything about Psychonauts 1 applies here too, the worlds are beautiful with the updated graphics and all marginally different from one another, making for a unique experience. The characters are endearing, the gameplay is snappy and enjoyable. The story got a massive update too and is great!

You're not getting out because you're locked inside.
I'd like to introduce you to the corners of my mind.
‘Cause I remember the first time I laid my eyes on you.
I left the window open hoping baby that you walk through.
So welcome, welcome to my mind.
I think you'd like to know I can't let you go.
And if you even try I'll just close my eyes.
Now you're locked inside of my my my my mind.
I'm sorry about your fate, but pretty baby, you can't escape.
So welcome, welcome to my mind.
It's just my mind that I'm trying to find.
It's just my mind that's one of a kind.
Kinda sounds like: a little of you, and a little of me.
Put it all together and we got “we.”
So welcome, welcome to my mind.
You're certainly welcome, and what's in store is yours.
If you'd like the talcum, just look behind the door.
‘Cause I remember the first time I laid my eyes on you.
I left the window open hoping baby that you walk through.
So welcome, welcome to my mind.

This game should be an inspiration to anyone designing a sequel; it's fun, it's gorgeous, and it improves on the original in all regards.

Be sure to purchase Persona 5 in a couple months so you can win both hearts and minds.

Psychonauts 1 was great but to me the second game just improves on the overall experience in every little aspect.
The visuals are stunning to no end. None of that photorealistic bs that most big devs nowadays drown themselves in, this is true style and creative expression compressed into one big adventure.
The characters are well written and fan favourites are being expanded upon.

The combat and movement has tons of variety and I honestly believe that everyone will find their favourites the arsenal of options you can choose from.

The music is great and the composer improved over the years. The difference between the soundtrack from Psychonauts 1 and 2 is incredible, really.

It was truly worth the wait.

While I have problems with the pacing similar to the first game's story, I still vastly appreciate a sequel to this coming out. Psychonauts 2 improves on everything the original game had to offer with a amazing story, platforming, and art/music direction. I even give them extra points for having a Sgt. Pepper's reference in one of the worlds.

Again I do wish the pacing towards the end was better and that more of the characters were involved. There's even the matter of potentially stating they should have added the Rhombus of Ruin into the start of this game instead of it being it's own stand-alone VR title, but this still is a really good game. I appreciate Double Fine for coming back to this and I hope they can deliver more titles like this in the future.

Pretty much everything about this game is a knockout. Amazing mechanics, well written characters, fun boss fights, beautiful environments, everything is just so well thought out and you can tell that a lot of care went into making the game. If I had one complaint, it would be that the point-of-no-return in the game happens a little too soon. But that’s not that big of a deal, since after the game is over you can keep playing. Overall it’s definitely worth buying.

According to the global achievement stats almost 1 in every 5 people who bought the game found everything, unlocked every upgrade, maxed out their wallet and basically did everything there is to do in the game. That should tell you how fun this game is.

Given how long this was in production, I was going into this expecting to be disappointed. I mean, Psychonauts is one of my all time favorite games, one of the first games I ever truly loved, and how could a game that's been 16 years in the making actually deliver on the hype? Well, Psychonauts 2 DELIVERS. Still keeping Psychonauts' original quirky style and fun mechanics, while adding a lot of new characters and sincere emotion and care, Psychonauts 2 might even surpass the original.

I just wish those other interns wheren't so mean to my perfect son Raz who has never done anything wrong ever once in his life.

This game is a solid gem of the ages. The fact that I played the first one as a kid made the playthrough of this game even more wholesome for me, given the nostalgia factor and the interconnected story...There's so many great references to the first game, either through visual storytelling, the minds you explore through or related characters to the ones in the first, it's incredibly well made and you can tell the developers put their full attention, heart and soul into it; Compared to the first, the GRAPHICS look amazing! Same style, same gameplay, only much more smooth and refined, same quirky silly jokes and more upgrades, more worlds to explore, more complexity in the overall story...I was giggling and at the edge of my seat at times during the cutscenes...it's incredibly well made...the perfect sequel, really...I just wish there was more to it...feels to me like the first game world was a bit more detailed and broad than this one....The only bad thing I would bring on it is that it's less detailed in voice lines, for example, in the first one you could pick any item in your inventory and go to an NPC and they would bring out comments on that particular item and have many more voice lines on things in general...this one felt a bit more flat on that regard, because many characters would just repeat the same lines over and over when you would interact with them... there's more minds in the sequel and they feel better structured and much less confusing, though I would've liked to see a bit more of the real world to explore and maybe more minds too...When you visit the collective unconscious, it's somewhat misleading because you see so many doors there, but the game only really brings about half of them to the table...the rest are just for decoration purposes, I guess? ...needless to say, I put 38 hours in it and I enjoyed it to it's fullest...it will probably take me a couple more hours to collect the last few items in the game, since I only got the last mind to finish 100% and a couple more treasure items in the real world to find.
OH! Make sure you find Lilly after you finish the story...she has a sidequest for you which I am interested to see where it takes me...maybe there's more to the game still, though I'm not getting my hopes too high on it...it's perfect as is and I loved every second of it! Here's hoping we get a trilogy now
10/10 game...it's really a fantastic experience for psychonauts fans and any platforming fans, for that matter! A must play

What a friggin ride. I cannot say enough good things about this game. Not only did they stay true to the original, but they even managed to make it even more "Psychonaut" IMO. You can tell they really put their heart & soul into this game. Well done guys, well done!

If you've played the original Psychonauts (there's also a VR mini game to bridge the first and second game - haven't played it) then this is beyond a worthy successor to the first. I could go into all of the nuances of the game, but to put it simply, this is beyond a worthy successor. The atmosphere, theme, and implementation mirror that of the first, but with the added flair of modern graphics. I am truly impressed with all that were involved with its production. You don't often see platformers in 2022, but if you're looking to develop one take notes from this game. This is premiere platforming, with great story and character development. Beyond impressed. Hats off to the devs and teams working on this. As a person enjoying the game, thank you so much for creating such a memorable piece. I remember playing the original on steam (I didn't play this as a kid because in the Blockbusters shop it was distributed in I didn't want to rent a "dangerous" game") a few years ago I was warily delighted that there was to be a sequel given the timespan. If you loved the original Psychonauts, you should absolutely play this game. It's like you never left. I'm thoroughly impressed. Also to add, if you're coming here as an original Psychonauts fans, the original plots hinted in the first are more fully explored here. This game is truly a treat, and one I wish I could play again for the first time.

Some parts of the game just dragggggged on and there were lots of frame drop, frame lag/staggering issues.

Some of the game mechanics were cool, but some were just annoying. Oh, and turns out not having a sprint button is very annoying as well.

Nice art design and some very cool level design.

All in all...a decent game at best...just thought I'd like it more

Easily top 5 best platformer collectathons ever made. One of the most clever games I've ever played. Found myself multiple times throughout the playthrough saying to myself, "this game is *bleeping* amazing." Art style is unique and creative, dialogue is hilarious, plot is so fun, gameplay is very smooth. Can't recommend this game enough, even if you didn't play the first one.

Its kinda like the game Psychonauts, but two. Great stuff. I can't find the words to tell how much I loved the different levels and the writing in this game. The tone is a bit more mature from Psycho1, but not in a grim way.. just like, the game has a lot to say. And it manages to find a very special, positive, healing feeling to it all. At 19 hours of gameplay and a ton of minds to visit/fix, I´d say its a bit too much. I took like half a year pause to finish up. But glad I did, since the last third definitely pays off. And there's even post-credits gameplay with small snippets of new dialogue... one of the scenes there got me a bit emotional, even.

Unbelievable. I have not finished this game, but it is absolutely incredible how closely it follows the steps of the first. The mechanics, the gameplay, the art style, the imagination and humour. Word to the wise, you can enable in "settings" the ability to, after you double jump, press "space" again to start gliding, and then you can press it once again to hop on your ball, just like the first game. Greatly improves mobility. Highly recommend, absolutely stunning

Psychonauts 2 wasn't what I expected, but I loved it anyway. An incredibly creative and fun experience, Psychonauts 2 hits the nail on the head when it comes to graphics, level design, and story. In fact, the story is easily the most impressive and memorable aspect of this game, and I honestly can't think of any other game with this level of writing. The concept of Psychonauts is so god damn incredible and genius, and in my opinion, it's a series of games that truly captures the essence of what make video games special, a feat only a few other games have accomplished. It combines a beautifully written story that perfectly touches upon mental illness with gameplay that literally takes you into the minds of the characters. By connecting the game's story with the gameplay, Psychonauts is able to create an engaging blend of the two otherwise conceived separate concepts. This was mind blowing when it was introduced in the first game, and in the modern times, it is just as incredible. My only gripe with Psychonauts 2 is the combat. I like it more than most, since I feel that Double Fine really made each psychic power feel useful in combat against certain enemies, but as the game progresses, it gets more and more mashy as multiple types of enemies get thrown at you. Still, each power fulfills an interesting niche and becomes useful in several puzzles instead of being weird, inconsistent, and ultimately unuseful powers that are only used in one or two puzzles, an issue I had with the first game.

TLDR: If you're looking for a 3D platformer with fun collectathon elements, stunning and unique graphics, and a mind-bending, humorous, and deeply emotional story that touches upon real mental illnesses and issues, Psychonauts 2 is the game for you. It's also very accessible, with several options that allow younger, older, or otherwise handicapped players from enjoying its wonders.

The beginning was bad, had me concerned.
The middle majority of the game was pretty good, and gave me hope.
The ending was awful.
As people have been saying, it looks and feels like Psychonauts. It looks like it could have been made after the first game, say 2009. It's pretty fun.
But upon reflection, everything beautiful about the game is just memories from the first game. There are no moments that stand out to me from the story. No levels that pushed any boundaries. No emotions carried out of the game. It was merely nice.
The characters exist and do some fun things, but there is no character to them. Raz makes some references to the first game and your heart sings. Then he changes back to bland as ever: a sudden change of personality this game. Some new characters can be amusing at times. The rest of the old characters are also flat and lifeless.
The story falls extremely flat by the end. A lot of the moral dilemmas presented in the game are suddenly solved in simple, brutish, half-baked ways. People suddenly change heart without explanation. And there are no lessons learned by the end except, be nice? Everyone is secretly evil? Don't let it show? (see alan parsons project)
I give it a thumbs down because the ending and the takeaway from a game are most important to me, and this game delivered only disappointment.

It is a faithful continuation of the first Psychonauts with not only the story but the art style, combat, and comedy. The level designs and platforming are done well with come challenging moments that keeps you on your toes, though there are some levels that may make you feel squimesh. Overall great game would recommend!

Psychonauts 1 was one of my favourite games growing up, and I am happy to report that Psychonauts 2 did not disappoint. Absolutely adored the level design and gameplay, albeit the combat was kinda clunky, especially during the last boss, however, that should not deter anyone from this picking this gem of a game up. A solid 8.5/10 from me.

Great game! It manages to simultaneously feel like it's been 20 years and just a couple days since the first Psychonauts game. It also really feels like the people making the game have matured, while staying essentially the same. I had a little bit of PTSD reaction when the Aquato Family Circus music started up, but fortunately there is no equivalent to the meat circus level in this game! It deals with more mature issues than the first game, in a more mature way, but is still outrageously fun and weird. I'll definitely be replaying it regularly.

Psychonauts 2 is the type of sequel that greatly expands and elevates the ideas of its predecessor.

Visually the game has improved on a technical level, of course, but it still retains the same overall art style. There is a shift in focus between the first and second title. Environment are much bigger both in the overworld and within levels. There's also more obligatory verticality which is nice. The levitation ability has been nerfed which is welcomed because it makes platforming more engaging.

The first game was a blend of platformer and adventure game, while Psychonauts 2 is firmly a platformer. There is an expanded focus on combat with many more types of enemies as well as specific weaknesses for certain foes. Abilities are also upgradable in an order that you choose. They can allow customization in how you go about combat.

Story and plot take a focus, continuing off of the end of the first Psychonauts game and their VR-only adventure (I suggest you look up a playthrough if you don't have VR and want to be informed on the plot). Returning characters are present but not the focus with most of the screentime dedicated to introducing and developing the new characters we meet at Psychonauts headquarters. There's an engaging mystery, callbacks to the first game, and a couple key memorable moments between Raz and the characters from the first game he idolizes.

As for critiques I have there's one big gameplay one and one big story one, both spoiler free. The gameplay gripe I have is the pin system. It feels needlessly restrictive to have only three alterations to your abilities via pins active at a time. Some of these are just cosmetic and should not occupy a slot. Pins are also expensive so unless you spend time grinding for currency as well as prioritize the pins that generate extra income or earn discounts you won't have access to even half of the pins before the final levels. The story gripe is that specific characters are neglected and could have had more screen time. Returning characters have a lot to do at the start of the game but for most of the rest of the game they stand around in a way that feels quite static. The new characters like Raz's new piers are more dynamic but we don't get as much time to spend with them as I would like. There are also far fewer than the large cast of campers for the first game so there is a slight feeling that headquarters is somewhat underpopulated.

Despite small criticisms, it is an amazing fact that this game exists. After the financial failure the first was and the decade it took to get another game the fact that this game isn't a cash-grab or a pale retread but rather a shining examplre of how to make a sequel shows that there genuinely is a spark to this franchise that makes it unique. Psychonauts 2 delivers not just on the premise of being more Psychonauts but also a solid 3D platformer in this age of the genre's revival.

Psychonauts - the predecessor, was one of my favorite games of all time.
This has surpassed it.

You will not find a game that marries narrative and gameplay as well as Psychonauts.

Plays like a more refined version of the first game. The story's pretty damn good and both old and new characters are well written and voiced. I wish the interns had a bit more involvement with the story though they kind of just vanish towards the end of the game and are overshadowed by the psychic 6 you get to meet. Controls are FAR better than the first. Good game would invade russia again.

Psychonauts 2 is a masterpiece of a sequel, doing everything that a sequel should do, while also standing proudly on its own.
This is one of the most creative, original and (at times) even profoundly smart games/stories I've ever experienced. Extra points if you're into psychology and understanding the way the mind works and the unconscious. Very very well done to the developers for taking complex concepts and bringing them to a wider audience, disguised in the cartoonish, light-hearted feel of this game.
Characters really stand out - everyone is so memorable also because everyone is just completely different and unique in every aspect. The story is quite good and interesting, though by the end I thought the twists and turns started following one another a bit too quickly and the ending didn't feel like it had any consequences on our quirky cast of characters. But that's fine, overall, and didn't detract me from enjoying the narrative and fascinating world.
If you loved the first one, you'll adore this one.

If you are like me and played the first game in preparation to play this my god how have we forgot how bad was PS 2's graphics.

Psychonauts 1 felt like a Ren and Stimpy style cartoon. Psychonauts 2 feels like Muppets all went insane the graphics are so extremely detailed while the art style pretty much left untouched. There are levels in this game that feels and obviously intended to be felt like an LSD trip. It is unbelievable what good art design and technology can accomplish.

People who never played Psychonauts are nowadays swearing at people in pubg or doing discusting dance emotes in fortnite. I am glad I had the chance to play the original and I am glad I had the privilage to play the sequal. My only regret is I didn't play rombus of ruin game which is kind of frustrating but no damages.

After completing it the first time, if everything worked, it would be 8.5/10

I was denied 100% completion after hours of extra grinding because for some reason, at rank 102, I was 1 point short from buying the last power. Many people have complained and there has been no fix other than to replay the entire game for rank 102 again.

I've waited 16 years for this! Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY!

It's been very long since I've been so impressed by a video game as this one. It retains the same surrealistic and creative level design and wacky storytelling as the first game but also modernizes it to the next level with superb controls, amazing animation and beautifully crafted stages! This kind of design is what really missing from today's video games: every stage is unique and memorable, super weird yet tells a story of the person's mind and thoughts, and evokes strong emotions while also pointing out the very serious issues of mental problems. You'll never know what to expect from the next stage and it legit surprised me in many ways all the way till the ending. I can easily say, PSI King's Sensorium is already in my Top 5 stages of all time list of any video game!
Huge praise also to the writing, voice-acting and music, everything is super high-quality, you can tell everyone did their best and took extra care for their parts.

The only few gripes I could find are: the combat is a bit wonky and chaotic; changing powers is a big pace-breaker; many platforming sections could've used a more visible drop-shadow; the story ending is a bit abrupt, yet opens the way for another possible sequel (maybe?); the final unlockable power (which pretty much breaks the game) is pointless as you need to 102% the game to get it anyway, so there's nothing to do after it...

I rarely say this, but this game is a truly 10/10 MASTERPIECE! I had a fantastic experience with it for all the 31 hours and I can recommend everyone to buy this (along with the first game)!
Can't wait for Tim Schafer's next big project, even if it'll take another 15 years...

Short, but sweet. You 100% the game in about 20ish hours, which for a 60$ game sounds like a ripoff, but the creativity, visual art style, and humor is well worth the price tag.

Simply a mind blowing game. The level design is stunning and the music fits perfectly. It feels like an improved and extended version of the first part, but it's not a problem if you haven't played the first part though, as the controls and skills are reintroduced step by step. It has exactly the same feel and charm as the original Psychonauts.
I love games where there is a lot to discover and you have the freedom to explore without pressure. I also appreciate games where you can make tangible progress in some way. Psychonauts 2 offers just that: Incredible levels to explore, tons of hidden items to experience achievement, and a bizarre and entertaining story that continues when you're ready.
The game plays well with the keyboard, but I would definitely recommend a gampad.

I'm going to make an art project out of reviewing this and Psychonauts 1. Tim Schafer is genuinely an idol of mine, he's a fantastic writer that makes games so enthused with creativity and ideas that you can't help but love them, at least from an broad-view artistic standpoint.

I really enjoyed this game. It managed to keep the same energy and feel as the original game while also tackling and going more in depth with different mental health problems in a very well done and tasteful manner. I easily had many long play sessions without realizing it. I found the story captivating and loved the characters (old and new alike). My only complaint was how they nerfed the levitation ability (compared to the same ability in the first game) but it was fine after I got used to it.

WOW!
Fifteen years later, this game came out again, and it revived my interest in the Psychonauts series. After I downloaded the game, I found that I couldn't stop playing for 4 hours. What makes me happiest is that Double Fine made the game available to Mac players so I could play it. The plot and gameplay are completely new, only the characters have not changed. Double Fine has made huge changes and improvements in the new game, which makes Psychonauts 2 so much fun. The gaming experience on the Mac is very good, and it can be said that Double Fine plays the most part in all aspects of the game. I'm very much looking forward to the official Chinese translation of Double Fine, and I'm very much looking forward to improving the game in the future. All I can say about this game is that I'm amazed, it's a great game and it deserves an award. The only suggestion is that it would be better if it could be played in mutiplayer or split screen.

Meh...

First of all, this is not a bad game. But if you expect it to be a worthy continuation to the first Psychonauts game, you may be disappointed as I was. I'm just glad that i've bought it on a 50% off sale.

The story, while interesting, is a bit drawn out. The levels are decent for a platformer, but quickly get boring. The enemies are plain ANNOYING, especially the boss fights. I've had to use the invincibility option to skip the final boss fight, because I couldn't be bothered to endure it after failing for the fifth time.

And the humor.... yes, the game is funny. But again, it falls short of the first part. I recall re-playing the first Psychonauts after completing the game simply to hear all the dialogue lines because their stories were so funny. Psychonauts 2 is a "play once and forget" game for me.

The game is great visually and really pulls you in form the beginning. It's easy to play and has enough differences throughout to keep you entertained and prevents the game from being repetitive. I cannot praise Psychonauts 2 enough- it's been so incredibly long since I played the first game, but PN2 has been able to suck me in completely. Every single part of this game is just oozing with personality and humor and emotion, from the incredibly express character facial/body animations, the extremely inventive and unique levels that are chock-filled with details reflecting the characters' minds, to the well paced and very personal stories being told and interwoven with each other.

The only thing I can complain about is that some movements are finicky- e.g. jumping when pressed right up against terrain objects that aren't perfectly vertical (because the environment is so stylized) can fail, and sometimes jumping while climbing depends too much on the camera being mostly straight behind your character. Beyond that, this is simply a masterpiece.

If you liked Psychonauts 1, you'll like 2 as well: A bunch of intriguing and quirky mental levels with their own interesting themes, funny conversations and exchanges, and story that continues and deepens from the events of the first.

If you felt frustrated by some gameplay portions of the original, don't worry: The sequel does not have the same difficulty-spikes, and contains features to let you play much more casually, to focus just on the narrative, characters, and humor.

For completionists: After finishing the campaign, you have free reign to revisit old locations, as well as an additional exploration tool to help you locate "that one dang figment I can't find anywhere." AFAIK the only "missable" content involves NPC conversations or conversation-choices, and in those there's never a "wrong" conversation choice except perhaps for ones that end the conversation.

This game is beautiful, engaging, and also a lot better than the first in my experience. I am not the best of gamers, so I kinda got lost in the first game, but I never once got too lost in a way where I couldn't figure out where to go on my own. Controls are great and smooth. Lighting is amazing and blew me away. The collectibles and level up system actually compelled me to actually work towards 100%ing the game, and the story was a lot more engaging to me as well.

I have never left a Steam review, I felt obligated after completing this game. The combat is just challenging enough, the plot is captivating but doesn't take itself too seriously. I'd say both are equally good, I was slightly disappointed at first but after replaying the first game I actually prefer this one now. I think aesthetically the game is on par with the first, had a fun mystery plot and hub world.

I think overall the characters are better in this game even if is they aren't unsettling or weird like the asylum characters from the first. Bob, Gristol, and Ford especially all are probably my favourites.

If you're someone who appreciates aesthetics, characters and world building over game play in video games than this is probably the best in the platforming genre to do it in my opinion.

I cannot fathom or put into words just how amazing this game is; It oozes creativity, originality, humor, passion, everything! The developers over at Double Fine wanted to give fans the ultimate sequel and they achieved it in buck-loads! A TITANIC of a video game that wasn't hold back due to any pressure, no crunch, nothing of the sort. The platforming is the only thing I could criticize a bit as it doesn't feel as precise as say a "Mario" game but it doesn't need to be Mario Galaxy 3, this is a game that was conceived by one of the greatest minds within our industry and this is their magnum opus. I recommend playing the first Psychonauts for the full story and character attachments but it still explains the story of the first game through a short video sequence at the beginning. A MUST BUY.

there are no words for how perfect this game is even on its own, but it is an absolute gold standard for continuing any piece of cult classic media. it's very clear that the team that worked on this game not only loved what they were doing to death, they also listened very closely to what the fans loved about the first game and then expanded on all of it. in fact they learned from and fixed so many of the short comings of the first game (seriously the conveyance in the first game is a mess. i didn't have to google a single thing just to finish this one, though!)
its hypocritical of me to say since i waited for a sale but i think this game is fully worth the $60 price tag. (maybe knock off 10 bucks for the goat vomit though)

At first I was worried this game wouldn't live up to the hype, or even to the level of the first game in the series. I must say I was delightfully, completely wrong. The writing and creativity continue to blow me away (even more so this installment), the graphics and character animations/expressions are *completely* stunning, the voice acting has no business being this good and the fighting system was greatly improved, it actually feels fun!

Even though as of writing this review I only completed the first (besides the tutorial) mission, I can say with no doubt in my mind that the creators poured their hearts into making this goddamn treasure. And to this day it is probably one of the only 2 games I would deem worthy of their $60+ price tag (the other one being Zelda BOTW). Getting it for half the price now feels like a steal, at least in my opinion.

Edit: 100%-ed the game and I stand by what I said.

Presentation (3.5/5) - visually creative settings for a game with creative world building and theme. Cartoony 3d style with some scattered 2d textures mixed in. Music is pedestrian, sound goes well with the graphics and also has character. The visualization of mental health concepts as enemies to fight is cleverly executed and rather amusing. Voice acting is good, sometimes overenthusiastic to a fault.

Story/Dialogue (3/5) - Heavy on exposition at times and backstory briefly explained in still images. Story and dialogue resembles a merely above average children's cartoon with hit or miss humor that overemphasizes puns and gross gags. Story seems oddly paced because its progression centers around 'let's get into this person's mind'. Sometimes game does get into very dark territory though without matching visuals (let's have a crying pursetag while discussing death or alcoholism). While the story is likely great for most, I found myself disengaged and even checking my phone at times.

Gameplay (3.5/5) - A mix of adventure and platforming mechanics where you gain a larger number of skills as you progress that can be exploited in some platforming scenarios, These skills also have their uses in combat, excelling in specific circumstances. Boss fights are complex and require you to adapt to what is being thrown at you. The gameplay is in other words adaptable, if a bit easier than it should with no difficulty options for a bigger challenge. The gameplay suffers from having too many cutscenes, often interrupting the flow.

A game that had a lot to live up to. The original Psychonauts was a fantastic game with a creative premise, interesting and funny characters, and great art direction. It was criminal it wasn't more on more people's radar. When a sequel was announced, I was very excited as well as a tiny bit apprehensive. After all, revisiting a project you did more that 15 years ago always runs the risk of missing what made the first game great by relying too much on nostalgia and playing it too safe.

Thankfully, Psychonauts 2 avoids these pitfalls, and improved upon the original in every way. The main story is more streamlined into every level / brain seamlessly, the comedy feels better than the original and the themes hit harder. The old and new cast are great and a higher emotional and philosophical depth is achieved. The combat and platforming are a massive improvement. The visuals, sound and level + World design are technically and artistically brilliant. Two smaller things to add is that it's a breath of fresh air that the team making this game were not subjected to crunch times, and they knew when to delay the project to avoid it. And the LGBTQ+ representation was handled really well.

Overall, it feels as if the second entry blows the original out of the park, and cannot recommend enough.

So I’ve been playing this for a while and getting 100% achievements is super easy since all of them ask you to just play the game. Appreciate the color blindness setting, was a huge help for me to find figments. There are tons of options to make the game harder or easier depending on how you want to play it. This game caters to everyone but doesn’t stray from what it wants to be, a 3D platform collectathon. Story is good with surprising twists. Not much to complain about, even the price is decent for what you get with the game. It’s comparable to a AAA game.

Héxié
Héxié

This game did everything the first game did and took everything to a whole new level. Stunning visuals, genius level design, stellar story, and the soundtrack is phenomenal.

As you control Raz once again to explore people's minds and fight their inner demons, a mystery unravels. With each level you go deeper and deeper into the psyches of traumatized individuals to try and help them move past their worst memories, and accept them, growing into stronger people in the future.

The level design and the story go hand and hand. You may start a level in a sunny kitchen and wind your way through until the house becomes more and more dilapidated representing both the real struggle the character faced and the deep depression which resulted from their situation. You will hear music shifting fluidly to match the themes of an area, seamlessly undercut by leitmotifs which tie it all together.

The collectibles are an obvious feature of any platformer but in this case they also further the story of various characters. Each character has their own story and demons, but they are all very much united in a wider plot and fit in a role which perfectly matches them. Everything about psychonauts is AAA and cutting edge, to include surreal spaces and non-euclidean spaces that make no sense, but they make perfect sense.

This game is superb and I will definitely be looking forward to future work from double fine if this is what they're putting out, and I sincerely hope they will revisit psychonauts one day.

bmod

Doublefine did it again!

If you've never played a Tim Shafer game, this is a great one to start with.
There is _very_ little I don't like about this game. Let me think.... sometimes the platforming is a little janky and takes a couple of tries, but nothing to really break the flow. Oh and there's some places where the signposting got me confused, but not enough to really annoy me.

Other than that: Falling into pits cracks me up everytime, I can't unhear Invader Zim's typical voice screaming. The acting in this game is just GLORIOUS, a cinematics cut of this game would already be worth the time.
Did you notice this game is WEIRD? Just when you thought it couldn't get any more outlandish, something stranger happens, but somehow it's all grounded in familiar themes and so recognizable at the same time.

Anyway, what a fun game, I want to play it again, just buy it and have a good time. :D

3D platformers were all I played as a kid, and I've felt like the quality of those games have really declined over the last decade (looking at you, Yooka-Laylee). It Takes Two was a great game for me because there were so many nostalgic elements that had been re-imagined in a modern way. But I've yet to find the crude humor of Jak and Daxter, the creativity of Banjo Kazooie, or the memorable characters and general badass-itude of Ratchet and Clank. That is, until I picked up Psychonauts 2 on a whim.

I love how lively this game is. Walking through the headquarters, there's heaps of NPCs having conversations with those around them. The environments aren't stagnant and quiet, waiting for you to interact with them to trigger their dialogue. They're bustling, full of witty and weird conversations for you to stop and listen in on + I haven't heard a single NPC repeat their dialogue lines. The humor is there — I'm not laughing out loud, but I give an occasional chuckle (and that's a lot more than most games get out of me). The characters are morbid and dark, but they're whimsical, dry, and interesting. It's been a long time since I've played a game and have been able to list off character names, but these ones are so memorable that it's easy.

The level design is great. Each level is inside a character's mind, which means they're all unique, messy, colorful (or sometimes bleak), and bizarre. The platforming puzzles aren't particularly difficult, but if you're a completionist, they're the most difficult I've faced in a while. Some areas you have to come back to once you've gotten the right advancements, but how can you know that? You have to explore and try everything before you can make that judgement, and it's fun to not always know the answers. The game map is also surprisingly big. You spend a lot of time in the HQ and in people's minds for the first bit of the game, but you're not restricted. The game is fairly linear, but the side-quests span well into different corners of each level — revealing entirely new sections that are as big as the main areas.

The bosses are fun and quirky, very similar to the bosses of It Takes Two. They're often related to the environment, and it's more of a puzzle/platforming fight than a skill-based hack and slash. The bosses are typically based on the mind's negative systems and it's interesting to see them personified. The general enemies aren't particularly unique, and I feel like that would have been the icing on the cake, but I think exploration is the primary theme of this game over combat.

Overall, I'd give this game a 9.5/10 and I recommend it to anyone who misses the old days.

Much like the first Psychonauts, it's a great 3d platformer. Movement feels super satisfying and the level designs are deep and clever, the beatles-inspired level being by far the best. The first game was charming, but it's movement system and combat were a little unrefined (It is an older game, so it was actually a little ahead of its time).
