RESTLESS SOUL is short, yet it's filled to the brim with fantastic mechanics and humor. I enjoyed how the game shakes things up as you journey from town to town. The writing has many funny moments, although at times it feels like it's trying a bit too hard to be humorous. Still, the game managed to get a few laughs from me I'm a real sucker for a good fourth-wall break.

The black-and-white art style adds an extra layer of charm to the game, making it feel very unique. I particularly appreciate the "paper Mario like" design in the character models

While the story may be somewhat lackluster, the game is short, and a light game was exactly what I was looking for. Despite my disappointment in the overall narrative, RESTLESS SOUL is still pretty entertaining.

Lost yourself in the Afterlife? Goodness gracious, I bet you need some guidance, don't you? Mind banana peel room, naturally.

GAME-PLAY: 8/10

The game features a simple walk and shooting style. Alot of your time will be spent with DIALOGUE and some shooting bits here/there. I agree the game is a slight bullet hell, but the conversation portion really reins supreme here. Trust me. o_0

But the additional game-play to mention here is the MANY different mini-games that get tossed your way. They are short and fun and they do their job to spice up the variety to keep you interested. Always appreciated.

GRAPHICS : 7/10

So I know this is game is VERY heavy with its pixel usage. I don't mind that at all (pokes Undertale beneath coat). The world is nice to look at and I'm actually impressed the good bit of variety that comes from some characters. My only light gripe is that some areas feels same-y and other times I got a bit lost on what I could and could not interact with. Even then, I was still thankful at some of the fun/odd sights I got to see and just as much humoured towards how pixels were made this expressive in this style. And good usage as well despite the limited colour palette and hand. A mixed bag, to say the least. o-0

CONTROLS : 10/10

Going to be upfront in saying I am NOT an expert at Bullet Hell type games and my own lack of skill did get me killed quite a bit. Despite that, the controls are horribly simple and they are spot on to make your actions and especially your bullet do as intended. Nothing feels like it shouldn't work as intended and that is dandy enough for any gamer to ask for.

SOUND/MUSIC : 5/10

I will say to be blunt, I wasn't a big fan of the music and sound work in the game. Usually walk away from most games with at least a few tracks that I can still hear in my head, but Restless Soul (no offence) doesn't have much for variety. You'll hear alot of the same effects being used (I'm talking to you teardrop noise). Normally I wouldn't complain about it so much as sometimes they KEPT getting used constantly over/over again in the same lines of dialogue. The sound/music did its job and that was kind of it (at least for me).

COMEDY : ?/10

So this is hard to sum up because comedy is a HUGELY subjective thing to people. I don't want to harp on/against this game's usage of it, but I will make it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR there is is a TREMENDOUS amount of jokes. This can somewhat overwhelming, but others could find it the best thing to laugh so much. Some of it was very well crafted, had a good punchline/setup and some minor ones really had me burst out laughing. Other times I just found it too bothersome and once being beaten with the same corny joke every 30 seconds sort of lost its lustre. So again, there is a truckload of comedy to accompany Restless Soul. Keep note on that. *clown nose honk*

STORY : 10/10

Restless Soul really did a nice number on me (467, btw). I will say the story is incredibly simple to get. Following along as you do in your journey with no major twists to toss you around. But it's the ending and how it got teased here/there that really made me smile. I hope you get a chance to experience it too.

As an indie game with only a small group of developers,
this game excels with its humor and diverse gameplay.
Although it still has some problems (repetitive combat, can't run till late game...),
it is still worth a try.
It costs you a couple of hours anyway.

Pros:
*Game is cute
*Unique style - loved the 1920s black n white cartoons mixed with 8-bit visuals and music
*Simple controls - though they do take some getting used too (arrow pad to shoot + wasd to move)
*Gameplay difficulty was right between easy to medium. Some puzzles or boss fights took a few tries but I never felt frustratingly stuck
*Skip/fast-forward function to skip dialogue (really nice for when you die)
*Charming characters

Cons:
*There is no way to change or alter the controls... you just have to get used them.
*While I do enjoy comedy and it was charming at first, the jokes do get a bit tiring after a while (I did basically play the game in one day though. Might be okay if you aren't binge-ing through the game)
*I don't know if it was intended or not but the game feels really empty... and there are some places where it almost feels like there was originally meant to be more.
*They have a camera function for taking selfies in the game but there is little to nowhere of interest to actually take photos in the game. It'd be nice if there was more to actually do with that feature

I bought this game on sale for like $5 and felt it was definitely worth it. Overall it was a fun experience. I don't recommend playing the whole story in one go... I'd play it in two or three sessions. The best attitude to play this with is probably "This is cute. I'm just going along for the ride."

I really wanted to like this, but it was all-around disappointing. The gameplay is tedious, the story is unengaging, and the attempts at humor are very quickly irritating, repetitive, and completely fail to hit their mark. Not worth your time and money.

I'm only an hour and a half in and absolutely love the game. Hilarious writing, beautiful art, and fluid gameplay. I'm reading every single bit of text until the end of the game, and recommend everyone do the same.

A charming little game filled to the brim with fun jokes and a really cute story that makes getting to the end super enjoyable. Well worth a playthrough for anyone that enjoys a fun adventure.

The game is simple enough for anyone to pickup and play without issues.

And for extra points you can pet the dog.

Dumb but good jokes, positive yet grounded dialog, interesting story that doesn't take itself too seriously, 4th breaking, easy gameplay, relaxed aura, very good for a simple yet very carefuly crafted game. Would buy it even if it's not on sale because it should be cheap anyways. Good stuff.

This game is FUN, you'll be laughing at the jokes all the time, it breaks the 4th wall a lot (well done, and not in a lazy way). I truly recommend. The battles are simple, and even if you die the one who killed you will usually throw a joke, I've never seen it.

ENG: A funny and amusing adventure that knows how to fill the heart.
It has bullet hell boss fights, puzzles, minigames, secrets and above all, lots and lots of silly humor. I'm looking forward to the next dev game, Froggonit, which seems to be very similar to this one. Highly recommended.

Recomendadisimo.

A cute little game with much more content to it than I expected - with rather shallow characters who still managed to be valid tearjerkers at the finale.

What the game does well is it's never boring. You constantly meet new characters, discover new locations, play a new minigame etc. I was invested into this game all the way through. In fact, about halfway through the game I somehow lost my save file - and didn't really mind starting over.

Most of the jokes are frankly dumb / childish but with all characters consistently doing only such jokes starts to sorta work. To give the game credit several interactions did have me giggling!

I must mention that the game only has one main linear quest - bearing no concept of side quests (aside from finding all "little bros" but that's just secret-hunting that completes itself, don't even need to talk to an NPC upon finding them all). Yet there are so, so many optional interactions that you don't really notice it too much.

Extremely cute, some of the humor is lame but some of it's just goofy enough to hit

Combat takes a while to get tough enough to not speed through, but it wasn't boring.

short as well. I caught it on sale, you might want to too

It's an OK game, Not among the best indies out there (I cannot recommend it to any kind of gamer either), but it's actually a well finished product. Personally I find the humor is a bit overdone, and the aesthetic (music and graphics, which I suppose where deliberately chosen for the theme) makes the game a bit tiring and boring to play for too long. But this is compensated by its short duration(< 6 hrs) and the diversity of dungeons and puzzles. Its design and mechanics are well thought but I feel the camera handling needed a bit more polishing.TL;DR If you're planning to buy it, expect a short game with low difficulty, a simple story, and way too much humor

Fun game with many hilarious lines, the tower battle was not my favorite but ok, puzzles are decent and not hardcore

But shout out to the dev, they are very nice and helpful when players have any issue or questions about the game

Doctor Bielen

Short game, but funny (not ROFL, but smirk/chuckle kind of funny) and cute. Its simple, yet does mix up things from time to time, helping it from being too repetitive. Would recommend it, especially if you're looking for something short and sweet. Will say that I got this for sale for about 3 USD.

A clever mix of adventure game and bullet dodger, with fun characters that'll keep you smiling. Easy to 100% in under 5 hours. A good game for someone interested in trying out bullet hell without being too difficult. Bullet heck? Bullet limbo? Bullet next-door-to-Hell.

I want to like this game, but it's so frustrating that the writer is constantly throwing in their desperate attempts to be funny. Literally every time you enter a new room or area, your progress grinds to a halt and you have to read through slow crawling dialogue that's nothing but lame jokes. You don't get any helpful info, and it breaks any momentum you get when exploring or enjoying the level design. You're not allowed to go room to room in a dungeon, you have to sit through half a conversation with the narrator or some asinine NPC any time you walk through a door. It's astonishing they managed to be so irritating in the short time it takes to complete this game, but for whatever reason, the developer doesn't want me to explore the world he made. If he's gonna throw in all these WaCkY jokes every half second, why not just write a book? They do barely anything with the visual medium anyway.

This games is something a Paper Mario fan would like. It has has the humor and simplistic style of the series. But its more than just ghost Paper Mario. Its fighting is different, you shoot out of your body and can do so in 4 directions which is cool. Its not too easy or hard. There are times like in bosses where it can be a little bit hard and times in the over world where it can be a little to easy to get around. No matter what this game is great

I came to this game with the expectation of something similar to Undertale base on the trailer. I was wrong. I played the game twice just to make sure that I was being serious about giving this game a negative review. The gameplay was fine, an simple bullet hell game and several small minigames, with an abundant amount of jokes and references of other games. Some of the jokes were good, while others were pretty mild. They didn't help much for the second playthrough, so what was left was the negative aspects of the game. The collectibles were absolutely painful to get, they were hidden in many places of the map that required the player to stare meticulously at the monitor just to find some minor differences to access. As a completionist, it is an absolutely painful experience. And the OST didn't help at all. The two pieces of music in the trailers didn't exist in the game in both of my experiences. What I got was a few repetitive boring tunes that slowly and painful killed my insanity and patience. There was only one tune for every battle, regardless of the enemies, including boss fights. Speaking about boss fights, they were fairly boring. Once you had all the benefits of the collectibles (which the game locked most of them at the very end of the game), the final boss was more of a minor inconvenience than an actual threat.
In conclusion, this game has so many flaws to enjoy. Perhaps it would be a good little game to kill some time if it's on sale. But I will definitely not recommend

somebody sometrash
somebody sometrash

Mixed feelings.

The gameplay is on the easy side. Simple, fun and varied enough. There are collectibles cleverly located all throughout the world, the characters are likeable, nice graphics and art style and okayish soundtrack.

The humor is pretty clever and lighthearted, and I've actually laughed out loud at some jokes (which is not common in me). BUT. I've also rolled my eyes at some. And some left me indifferent. And I've fast forwarded some of them (this option was a nice detail). That's because each and every dialogue, interaction or event led to a joke, so while playing I frequently wished for fewer jokes but more plot. Ah, and expect no 4th wall AT ALL.

That said, Restless Soul still has a lot of charm, and I would recommend it if you're okay with comedy being the core of the experience.

Nice indie adventure about going, or try to go back to life. From afterlife. So, you are a soul. Explore towns, help others, and fight the bad guys bullet hell style.
You can die, but don't worry. You are in afterlife, after all.
This game is great for entertainment purposes after a stressful day at work.
Chill sounds and beautiful art.

- Could have really benefited from QOL improvements: You can interact with some characters more than once, but there is no indication of which ones have more dialogue. The low quality sound for voices grates after a while. The 8-bit characters are cute, but for a game that's so heavy on dialogue they don't emote enough, so a 16-bit imitation would have worked better for the game. Wish there was more detail and interaction from the environments.

Probably one of the funniest games I have every played while still having a touching story in the background.
The pacing of the game feels good and doesn't overstay it's welcome or drags on at any point.
Not too hard but it has a few challenging sections that you may have to repeat.
The music goes HARD in some areas.
Full story + 100% achievements took me around 8 and half hours.
No glitches or bugs experienced.

Definitely worth the full price imo.
I don't have any real negative comments about the game.

game crashed in the final area causing pc to freeze and deleting my save, now opening the game does nothing except stay on the loading screen even after verifying game cache uninstalling etc (only way to run the game is opening the exe file as administrator) disappointing since the game was fun.

This is a great game, short but sweet. I love the artstyle and music, and the gameplay and combat is fun, i never had a moment where death's felt unfair. The story and dialogue has humor rivalling that of Undertale. 10/10 game!!

Restless Soul has some of the best comedic writing I've seen from a game in a long time. After only the 1.7 hours of playtime at the point of writing this review, I've legitimately laughed out loud dozens of times, with plenty of other jokes giving me small chuckles, which is more than I can say about lots of other comedy games. I did my best to scour every inch of the regions I was in to find all the jokes, but even still I can't help but feel I might've missed some. And while some people might think that the density of jokes in the game seems to high, it really doesn't feel that way. To top it off, even if you don't find one of the jokes funny, they are usually kept to one quick instant that you can just move on from. It isn't dwelled on or drawn out in a "see how clever and funny we are" way. All in all, top notch writing from the devs!

As for the gameplay: it's alright. It's not meant to be some in-depth, action packed game, but there's some nice variety with puzzles and shooting. It mainly serves as another medium to tell jokes from, and it does that quite well. I'm sure more mechanics and things will be introduced as the game continues, but as of where I have reached at the time of writing this, I still feel satisfied enough with it.

If you're in the mood for a hilarious game, then I can't recommend Restless Soul enough.

The Crimson Chin
The Crimson Chin

It's an interesting premise, but the colourscheme, music, and constant flow breaking interruptions as you play add up to quite a frustrating experience.

Pretty much every room has forced dialog in the beginning and it gets really annoying fast. The movement feels just a bit too slow, and there are a lot of little quality of life problems. For example when you enter an empty room you have to stand still while the room fades in and you can't just run from the beginning.

The humour is pretty good, but there's way too much of it, so you don't get any space to appreciate the jokes. If there was more spacing and flow to the game it has the potential to be amazing!

The music is interesting, but again it gets repetitive fast, and I know it's meant to be an afterlife game but rather than coming off like a spooky quirk, it ends up feeling boring.

Hope there are updates to the game because it has potential, but for now it really didn't feel worth the higher indie game price.

Idranel
Idranel

Haven't beaten the game just yet, but my first impressions have been nothing but positive.

I absolutely adore the Pokemon on the classic gameboy aesthetic, the Pixelated 3D structures, the goofy conversations between the characters, I normally don't care much for 4th wall breaks, but these ones were pretty funny. Bullet Hell gameplay has always been a bit hit or miss (Heh) for me, but the game feels forgiving enough but also challenging enough in some areas, dying doesn't feel like bad luck but just human error.

I think people from both casual and more hardcore audiences can find enjoyment out of this.

The game isn't all that expensive give it a go!

Edit: So I 100% this game and it's been great from start to finish, though I'm not sure if it's because I haven't looked hard enough, but doesn't seem like there is much of a post game. Which, for what this game is, that's fine.

Still, I highly recommend this game if you want to try out a goofy indie game.
