I liked this game up until that stupid boss fight. Maybe if I'd be able to use a controller I might stand a chance but I'm not that good with a mouse and keyboard and I can't beat that stupid boss Marduk. He deals WAY too much damage and his high jump is just insane. Why is he THAT OP!? The rest of the game I could deal with but THIS BS!? NO! SCREW this game!

I originally purchased this after watching Josh from "Lets game it out". While I have to admit that it was an enjoyable experience across the board, this game has essentially been abandoned by its creators. This had potential, but unfortunately we will likely not understand why this had occurred. As much as I would like to bash this for the devs leaving, I will still leave a positive review since they had at least presented something that could be functional.

TLDR; Dead game, devs left to get milk. Look elsewhere, or watch people who have played it.

Although there haven't been updates in a very long time, and most players have declared this game as "dead" or "abandoned," it is very playable and the story and everything is implemented nicely.

*SARKASM ALERT* The game is probably inspired by Hitchcock. If you meet birds, you are dead :)

I am giving thumbs up for good idea and I hope, the game will be polished. But currently the fight is frustrating, especially with birds. Who does not have strong nerves, avoid it yet.

Video (gameplay + commentary):

Short Version:

A solid 2D survival/crafting/base building game that also feels slightly early access in that it seems like it has a lot of room to grow BUT is already very fun to play. Tight controls, logical crafting/building, village management, and a neat overworld tying it together.

Longer Version:

I had a fun time checking out Rise of Ages! Even in early access the game feels like it has a lot going for it and tons of content to play.

As a survivor of your tribe, you have to pick up the pieces and start anew through building your own village(s) and recruiting women and men wandering around. There are also missions to connect you to neighboring friendly tribes. As you evolve through the stone age, you will be able to unlock things like fire, agriculture, and more.

The game's farming and crafting reminds me a lot of Terraria, and to me that's a good thing as it's generally easy to understand and guides you appropriately for all the things you may want/need to build. If you dig deep into the earth you'll also discover a network of caves which can be fun and fruitful (and dangerous!) to explore. Early on you're introduced to the overworld which connects you to many different areas, many of which are immediately accessible, even if some are meant for you to visit when you're stronger. I really like the fact that you can try anyway, though, and it gives you something to work towards for going back and trying again once you've built new weapons and stronger armor.

I found the game graphically charming with sharp colors, smooth animation, and to me, a charming art style. For some the art style may be an acquired taste, so definitely look at screenshots first to see if its style is something you'll enjoy.

If this sounds like the kind of game you're looking for, it may well be worth checking out! I know I'm glad I did.

I'll start by clarifying three things,

Firstly, I recommend the game both because it's already pretty solid in it's current state but also because I believe it is worth the financial support early access can bring

Secondly, I have a soft spot for games like this (for better or worse, such as terraria/starbound and too many others) but I think there are some refreshing trends/additions to this game that could make it quite special

Lastly, as with all things the game is early access and very much feels it. But, and I say this because I'm one of those ''ooh this could have potential'' kinda dopes when it comes to early access games, I genuinely love where this game is already going.

The game itself feels fresh ideas wise (for what it is, yet another side scrolling rpg'ish game), the big features that will bring this ahead of its contemporaries would be:
1: There is a tech tree - you advance from the prehistoric/stone age into a future era and then can explore space
2: You can build a tribe, hire people and give them jobs, equip them with items and even lead them into battles (making the game sorta hybrid RPG/RTS'ish)
3: I noticed there is a DNA button that isn't implemented yet :P that could be all sorts of fun (likely generations)
4: You can travel around the planet, different areas and different biomes all of which can essentially be claimed for your tribe (and eventually into space!)
5: While other similar games have this, there is already a pretty extensive storyline already in place, bit painful in its current state but definitely heading somewhere.

As per early access, it's not all there yet but it sounds pretty juicy. What is currently implemented is solid, showing the capability of the dev's and leaving a lot to look forward to.

The game itself is pretty gorgeous, I found myself quite surprised and pleased by the simplest of things. The animations don't feel sluggish, the backgrounds are very attractive, when lightning strikes during a storm It scared me sh*tless but looked great and while it's all very simple. It definitely kept me wanted to see all the various areas (different biomes).

There is plenty to enjoy about this game, and while the sad truth is that the majority of early access games similar in nature to this don't tend to make it very far, very fast, I believe it's worth the wait/support.

Now, the fact that it's early access is obviously going to be clear but there are some quality of life improvements needed pretty much immediately.
1: Water/food need go down a little too quickly. It's not so bad foodwise but with water you have to basically drown yourself to drink and finding water (considering you have to walk from one edge to the other of every map, and they're fairly big, is a little painful) which is needlessly time consuming.
2: A lot of the current 'quests' have you moving between areas and there is no (as far as i can tell) quick way to leave the nodes/areas without walking to the very edges and that is again. Horribly time consuming.
3: This game will make you hate birds..the combat is quite alright. Again the animations aren't clunky (and you can cheese enemies and attack them through walls) but the endless harassment in every area get's tiresome quite fast. Left me feeling rather frustrated.
4: Not really a big issue at all but the english needs touching up here and there, overall the writing is okay.

I'm sure there could be plenty of little gripes but it's more than likely it'll all be adjusted as time goes on (with feedback etc) and it's again, early access.

Overall for the state it's already in, there was enough to keep me exploring for 4 or so hours and there was still more to do, I'm going to continue enjoying this game and bought it to support development.

:D

In my opinion this game most definitely shouldnt have been released the way it is, the game mechanics in general are to old to even enjoy playing. The first 30 minutes of playing this game was very boring and tiring but I think with a bit more effort this game could become somthing like starbound and/or Terraria or atleast close to them or even better. I hope to see the progress of Rise of ages change for the better and not just a cheap made game for a quick easy buck like most game companies do now a days.

Perfectly playable in its current beta state. Quite a different game with a nod to various games on the market such as terraria, starbound etc. The developers seem to be on top of everything and listen to every comment posted which is always a massive bonus. I'm looking forward to seeing where this game goes and am happy to pay £12 gbp to support this great game and fantastic develolpers. Recommended even in this early stage as you can get engrossed for hours on end easily.

if it looks like u like this kinda game..... u probably will.

building is about 1 to 1 so its going to take a min to build a large city/base

combat i thought was fine, but apparently many ppl have issues with it.

the quests make u unlock tech, and u learn by watching others do things... very neat idea.

im around 18h in and believe im at the end of CURRENT ea content. i cant wait for more!

Early access
The game is far from finished.

It is a relativly fun building/Survival game, set in the stone ages where you over time and through quests advance the technology your character has access too.

There are a few things that are annoying, water is crucial for survival but this is two technological advanced away to store it in bottles, there should be some primitive alternative or at least make fruits like tomatos and oranges restore some of it while eating them. Regardless this is most likly going to be changed as acquring water is a pain in the behind. Aside from that there are the common early access bugs with crashing and other problems, but nothing to serious, you can definatly enjoy the stone ages as it is now. and I cannot wait for it to be finished.

lufialunar
lufialunar

Its a good game, I dont think you can advanced farther then the stone age atm. you can have end "STONE AGE" equipment in about 90 minutes. though to unlock all the other technologies like agriculture, and fire is to advance the main story. IMO the spear is the BEST! the range is more versatile then the BOW. reason being is that your attack is based on where you strike not where it lands. so you can easily use walls(ceilings) as obstacles and nothing can hurt you. Killed a mammoth with a stone spear. took alot of attacks to do it but then I have his SWORD LOL 1-2 shot all enemies. Just finished all quest i can do. lots of running back and forward with no "real" way to know what to do next to progress. I was set after 3 hours. yet game limitations prevents you from really enjoying the game. it has potential just waiting for it to grow.

At current content i think you can do everything within 10 hours.

Before writing review about this game, I want to let you know (dear comment's reader) my 2 main expectations for "Early access indie games":
- short story with "to be continued" perspective
- lots of bugs, which are not affecting the main story

So, what we have here:
From first point of view, you see graphically improved "Terraria" / "Aground", where pixel's graphic replaced with beautiful textures. After ~4 hours of playing you understand, that here is nothing to do with building, because seems, that even developers don't know what is for this option presents in early access.

After additional 6 hours of playing you understand, that most of the time you basically running from point A to point B, chatting with friends in facebook in parallel by keeping pressed right or left keyboard button.
Moreover, there no highlights for NPC locations during the missions, so be ready to visit the same location for 10+ times, trying to continue main story or find NPC.

However, the main problem is, that for 25+ hours of playing I was not able to complete the main story, because my games was freezed on some moment (no new missions appeared) and even workaround provided by developers, which helped me before, was not able to solve this issue. In conclusion, I would like to say, that game includes a lot of promises, which are still in progress (I hope) and I do not recommend this game in current state.

Thank you dear comment's reader for your attention to my overview, and sorry for my chicken english.

I loved the game. I have played little time, but I love these types of games so I really want it to go far. I will start with the pros and then the cons :)

- The art is beautiful, I loved the drawn style and the amount of detail is incredible. The weather changes are very well done, with thunder, rain and very strong winds that bend the trees ( I found that great and sooo atmospherical ). The lighting is also very nice, very smooth, torches look very good.

-It is clear that the developers are puting a lot of effort in creating a more original crafting and technology system. The game feels unique, even though I have played a lot of Starbound and Terraria. I see a lot of future in this game.

CONS:

- There is no fast way to respawn on the same area you just died, and it is a chore to walk every time all the way back. I suggest a way of fast travelling like Realms of Magic, where you select the places on the map instead of walking.

-I hope they add in the future a tool to dig more than one block and place more than one block, and faster too.

-I like the simple combat system but it feels a bit clumsy, and the enemies need a rebalance ( the birds are too agressive and lethal ). Right now there is no reliable way to avoid being hit, the hitboxes on everything are too big and you cannot block.

As a suggestion I recommend removing the backwards jump botton ( and allow double tap D and A ), and also a botton for blocking with weapons in general to make the game more skill based ( Also as Realms of Magic or Starbound, which for this game could lead to a more rpg character progression route; to damage, defense or agility if they wanted to implement character traits or stats ).
Make the hitboxes better and fix the dodging mechanics, because it is not responsive enough and not efficient in a fight. For me, the closest to ideal responsiveness and tools handed to you to win a fight with skill is what Dark Souls did ( I know it's another type of game and comparing might be unfair, but I really want to see this game stand out, I like the concept )

CONCLUSION

I recomend this game because it feels original and has a lot of potential, and could be as big as Terraria and Starbound when all the ages are developed. I really want to support the development team , as you can really see the effort they are putting in the game, in the textures, the systems, the amount of content there is already in. It is a very solid build of the game for now.
I just want really hard for them to tweak the combat system, I like it, it is resposive and tight, but control wise and animationwise it is a bit poor and clunky. It's hard to twitch fight ( fight precisely ) like in Starbound or some lite rogues you can find on Steam )

Edit: I had to change my recommendation because I came back to this, and saw it was abandoned. I can't in good faith recommend this game no more. Stay away from this one. If they come back, I'll gladly change my opinion. For now.. No!

This game is a blast. It reminds be of Terraria with really good graphics. there's tons to do, tons to explore and tons of creatures to take on. if you like Terraria, this is a great game to have.

RISE OF AGES - REVIEW!!!

----------

While this game is in its infant stages, I would still recommend the game. So there is that.

This early on, of course, there are expected to be some issues and some bugs that need ironing out, none of us can expect to see a final launch quality out of a Early Access game.

I would like to list for those who might find it helpful, my opinions, both pros and cons, before you consider buying. Also some bugs (or at least I think they were) I ended up noting / running into myself.

----------

PROS:

- Despite some of the harsh reviews I read about this game, I found hours and hours of fun game play in this -- Rise of Ages.

- There are lots of places to explore and full maps of resources and items to discover / use for crafting.

- Lots of individual and unique NPCS you'll meet along the way, holding their own unique quests and dialog to help you unlock tech and important clues.

- There are fun events you can attend or watch unwind if you take the time to read the text bubbles / do the side quests.

- The techs are fun to unlock as they are done through the requirement of questing, and not just handed to you.

----------

CONS:

- Combat system needs a bit of an overhaul as it seems a little buggy and glitchy. I would suggest a better key that is more accurate and prone to work, more than just half the time, than spacebar. Either double A or double D tap, in the WASD configuration would be advised, it depending on whether the opponent is on your East or West side respectively.

- From my experience, there is no true way to dodge some of the larger beasts assaults. Dodging can be hit and miss at best on the Bear and the Rhino. With the Rhinos incredible damage and high knockback and its ability to plow through massive amounts of both dirt and rock, it's way to easy to die when attacking it, especially early on when you're looking for its loot drops, needed for essential crafting of better tools, the player can originally be three shot with no real way to escape.

- Monsters do not give up chase, even after running an entire length of the individual map.

- The Devs noted other game modes but upon starting the program, there is only one true game mode right now that's even player accessable.

- Water / Food meter, in my opinion, still decreases a little bit too fast.

- No beginner tutorial explaining to the player, how they should start out building, and what things are most important to focus on, at first.

----------

BUGS:

- Some of the quests still have the wrong information for the player and erroneous dialog, and quest loopholes, that can lead to incompletions and not having a certain NPC being where they are supposed to be for a quest turn in.

- Sometimes when a group of NPCS are zoomed in on, you cannot see both of them when their dialog commences, leaving the player to miss a lot of crucial detail, sometimes very relevant and important information you'd need for getting futher in the game.

- Some of the return areas on quests do not list the Question Mark properly on the map, leaving the player to wonder around aimlessly until they find that specific NPC again.

- Unintentional Tribe Fights break out between your assigned villagers if they get to close to each other, swinging their weapon in defense of the city against attackers, causing them to kill each other.

- Upon working on a quest called 'Old Friends', I arrived to the point where the Festival of the city was to be held at night. The hero is taken by the city guard on either the West or the East side of the map, the party ensues but NEVER finishes. There is an NPC there with a question mark by his chat bubble, but his dialog does not further continue the quest given, and the player just waits in the city, prepared for an 'endless night'. Talking to the chieftain of the tribe merely gives three options of dialog, again not furthering their event ... (I myself have tried eating fruit in the coffer offered and talking to every NPC at the event, but eventually due to being stuck inside of the city walls, as I found both gates are locked during the Festival, the hero runs out of water and or food, dying, resetting any progress that might have been made in either furthering or finishing the 'Old Friends' quest).

- I found GOLD at the bottom of the 'mine'... What is it used for?
*POSSIBLE SPOILER END*

----------

That being said, I would also like the devs to consider filling out some holes I believe still exist in the game, after my discovery of playing for more than 15 hours.

----------

SUGGESTIONS:

- Make a notation somewhere for new players, explaining why they can't use a basic campfire to cook raw meat. I as a player killed my 'hero' several times before learning there was an actual Primitive Cooking Appliance.

- A small tutorial explaining gauges and crucial things, upon first starting, IN GAME! (Not every player takes the time to read the community boards for help, leaving many players to refund their game, instead of finding interest in furthering their play. The average player will simply drop the game for lack of instructions and frustration, which is very bad for the Devs and the money it takes to fund a better project / further chiseled out program).

- Further smooth out the English used in the 'chat bubbles'. Currently, some English is missing all together, leaving things important in meaning unexplained. Examples are the original tribe name of the 'hero' in some instances, as well as the connecting words very often used in proper grammar and common paragraph structures.

- Some of the maps are considerably larger than the other ones. I would suggest even further detailing the location of the NPC for quest returns, not only in the world map but also on the individual map where the quest return NPC physically resides.

- Make a floating / stationary minimap somewhere on the screen with an arrow pointing either East or West of the quest in question and or the Return NPC. A player is not always going to remember the exact building the NPC is in they had found minutes / half an hour / to an hour ago, or the quest they were on, depending on their exploration desires, and what ever other quest they decided to try and complete. It's easy to forget the last quest one is on when exposed to new information, a new game concept and new things to explore, all together. Without good directions the player is prone to more unwisely use their play time, wondering around far too much, likely as a result, quickly finding a large disinterest in the game.

- Label each building with a note by the door, or a signpost by their property, of important NPC'S dwellings / homes.

- Consider programming a more advanced AI for the followers / villagers. They currently have a possibility to drown in the water of even nearby claimed cities.

- Have a villager who is assigned as a guard actually attack a hostile creature automatically for further improved city defense, rather than sit there in front of or behind the 'hero', watching them die, eating a bowl of popcorn.

- Further enhance the combat system, perhaps every now and then, giving tips or tricks, maybe offered by other nomads and cities in your travels, on what a player might do to more easily fight a complicated wild animal / NPC enemy.

- Increase the distance the 'hero' moves away from an attacker when trying to dodge incoming attacks.

- Decrease the amount of stamina required for dodge or at least give a player more stamina as they progress throughout the game. You could even make them earn it!

So far its been fun, the restrictions on building via the tech tree is lame but it makes you atleast follow a storyline. This IS a good game with GREAT ideas, but it's shortfall is that it's dead as for now. So, on that basis, I don't recommend people buy it until further notice. I tried reading up about the publisher and developer dispute, but couldn't find any straight answers. But who knows, maybe with the call to get it out of the pit, another publisher might invest in it. I've played and watched enough gameplays to enjoy the charm of this game. There are a few bugs and missing assets, and the fact that only the Stoneage is available in its current build too. It's a shame because concept is an amazing idea, going through all the eras and evolving. I hope the game will be one of those dark horse games.

Hasn't been updated in a long time. Found other comments indicate that they are not even getting replies back from the developers Buggy, some in game items don't work. Should be removed from Steam but since it makes them money, they will leave it here. Is it worth $17. No. Maybe $1.

Game appear to be dead complete radio silence.

Abandoned game. It should be 1/5th of it's current price for how much content there is.

This game appears to no longer be in development. Be aware that you are paying for a game that is likely never going to be finished and has not been updated since 2019.

It's a great concept. But unfortunately, as many others are saying, it appears to be abandoned. As such, don't pay full price for it.

There are several bugs, the gameplay is only a small fraction of what it was supposed to be in the finished version, and overall the gameplay probably isn't enough to keep your attention to be worth it.

Maybe if the game ever does end up getting finished it will be worth the price. But, unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's ever going to happen. Perhaps in a few years I'll come back to this game and update my review then.

Unfortunately, this is a dead game. I have 82 hours in this game.. I would have loved for it to have kept going. I really enjoyed what have played of it. It really sucks to support something that later dies. Save your money. Maybe they will change the price.

Developers forgot about the game while full of bugs. Played once, couldn't finish the game due to a quest bug. Played it again, got a different bug and couldn't finish for the same reason. Don't waste your money.

Dead Game. Also pretty sure there are bots inflating the good reviews. Either that or a bunch of brain dead idiots.

I like what had been done so far... sadly it would appear that the game has been abandoned. I would wait and watch to see if anything more goes one with it, but as of right now, there hasn't been a peep from the devs; not even on Discord. I would say to give this game a pass and let it quietly die in peace, but follow it to see if it every gets an update. Hopefully it gets picked up again, in the future.

So just to put it out there I give this game a 1.5/5.
I really wanted this game to be a project that got finished. I got it not long after it first came out. Sadly it was last updated back in march of 2019 so i'm assuming that its been dropped.

I am writing this review while my refund is pending. Let me state that the game is fun for what there is however I cannot recommend a game that has not had an update in two years while being in early access. The devs promised several ages and from what I can gather, have abandoned the game and fans. Honestly I know there's warnings about early access games but after two years and no development the game should be removed from the steam store.

Though this game can be pretty enjoyable, it's littered with bugs and glitches, and is generally really unpolished.
I cannot recommend it
