I'll be honest, it just isn't fun.

There are boomer shooters that allow you to use high pace movement and combat really really well, but this game performs so badly that you have to sit still and shoot enemies. Not only that, but there are so many moments where you either crash or soft lock in an uncompromising position.

I really want this to be a good game, I really do, but it just doesn't live up to it's predecessor's name.

This game is absolutely amazing. It's really entertaining and gives you the doses of violence you need, with some nice gore and flying bodyparts. As you can see I spent quite a lot of hours in a game that is meant to be rather short. I played in medium, yet I wouldn't be able to progress in certain parts because episodes 3 and 4 are fucking bugged. And I really mean it. You will get stuck in walls and lava, shoot yourself, and there is a certain gun which can lag the entire game if you right-click while using it. And about the final boss, the ways it attacks you are quite unfair and upredictable (if it gets too close and whishes to do so, it can slam you and instakill you), and, you guessed right, it is bugged, which leads to El Oscuro fucking yeeting you into lava for example and no possibility of getting out of it, even though you usually can swim a bit. Believe me, even though the last boss is meant to be hard, it can take you a long while.
Even though it is the most bugged game I have ever played in my life, it has also been one of the most entertaining, so I still 100% recommend it, especially if it's discounted.

A great over-the-top FPS game. I recommend this if you're a fan of Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, and Doom franchises.

Rise of the Triad is hit or miss sometimes. The first couple of missions are actually quite enjoyable. You move through the levels, shoot any nazis you see, collect coins if you want to, find some secrets and complete the mission by reaching the end. I wished the whole game had been like this.

Later on, many missions consist of poor platforming, avoiding boring traps and feature annoying nazi magicians who drain your HP fast and tend to teleport behind your back. I highly recommend to use quicksaves since replaying certain parts just to die at instant death moments gets old fast. Note that my quicksave function didn't work until I bound it to other non-F1-12 buttons. Anyhow, quicksaving on some maps can break skripts though, making you unable to continue playing the mission until you reload the last checkpoint or until you restart the mission from scratch. This only happened to me in the last chapter though.

The biggest problem Rise of the Triad faces are the performance issues. This is not the most optimized game and it is using high-end settings as default. Keep lowering the settings in the launcher until the game runs smoothly. Another big flaw Rise of the Triad has is that it is leaving huge log files hidden in your folder even after uninstalling the game. Don't forget to delete it manually at: Documents\My Games\Rise Of The Triad\ROTTGame\Logs

Verdict

Rise of the Triad would probably deserve a neutral review for all its flaws. However, I only spent 1.50 squid and I quite enjoyed the good parts. I'm not going to defend its weaker parts though. Proceed at your own risk.

A janky remake with love

Rise of the Triad 2013 is a remake of the original 1995 game by Apogee Software. It takes the orginial story and gameplay and converts in into the Unreal Engine to make those 90 Degree levels into actually environments and slightly more appealing graphics. The game suffers by just being janky sometimes but I'm willing to forgive that as the amount of love given to the orginial game is just outstanding and is one of the perks this game has.

Gameplay is like the Retro FPS games of old and since ROTT 13 was released in well... 2013 that means it was one of the first games to sort of reboot that Classic FPS gameplay of Run, Jump, Shoot, Kill, and Gib. Featured are 4 Chapters based on the 4 episodes of the original game each with 5 levels (and 1 secret level I think?). ROTT 13 mostly brings back all the gameplay quirks fairly faithfully such as the various weird powers, health item mechanics, and enemy behaviors. However the game isn't shy to include new features such as a extra weapon slot for magic weapons, a brand new shotgun, and reloading animations for bullet weapons that do absolutely nothing and I'm so happy they have them there for no reason.

Story? Yeah this game has somewhat of a story. El Oscuro is a big douche and has taken over San Nicholas Island and as a member of the HUNT you're tasked in invading this island to defeat this leader and all of his followers. It's the exact same story featured in the orginial 1995 game though this information is presented in this pretty nifty Comic Book Style intro.

Now I think it's time to get into the Visuals and the Jank. Now visually the game... doesn't look all that unique it honestly looks like a bunch of store bought assets that were mixed in with some orginial models and textures. It makes this weird uninspired look which is a shame since the Orginial was one of the more stand out titles from it's design and atmosphere. The movement in ROTT 13 feels... off there isn't a sense of weight to the movement which makes platforming on the new smaller GADS super annoying and frustrating. Lastly the Bosses.. Oh the Boss have been absolutely gutted from the orginial. Instead of a large enough arena to avoid fire, you have small areas with props littered everywhere to get stuck on. The NME has this problem which is such a shame as he was the Hardest Boss in the original but for the right reasons not because of the map design.

But then the Music returns to rise this back out of the bad zone. Andrew Hulshult who is known for the soundtracks for DUSK, Doom Eternal and almost any other Retro FPS game composes the and adapts most of the original theme from Lee Jackson and Bobby Prince. While I honestly just instantly switched to the orginial tracks since that is a amazing feature that they added I still enjoy listening to these remixes. (But why isn't Hellero used for the Boss Levels? And why isn't there a cover of Boss Blow?!?!??!)

Overall, Rise of the Triad 2013 is a love letter to the original recreating the original game with more modern controls, visuals and still having a lot of the charm, however, the game does suffer from jankiest and odd design choices but I don't think this completely ruins the game just stunts in a weird middle ground of mediocrey but overall Rise of the Triad was already a hidden gem of a game anyway.

Bought it on sale a few months back and this game is far, far better than Duke Nukem Forever ever could be

The game itself is okay.

Shooting is okay-ish and the varied guns are pr kool. But the platforming can be really jank and frustrating if using a fast character. It feels like you're moving on ice, but in the air.

The reason I'm writing this review is due to the worst thing about this game. I can't say if this was the case in 2013 on release but in 2021 using Windows 10 the game is broken.
Loading a level? Crash.
Quickload? Crash.
Too much going on in game? Slow down and crash.
Die? Slight chance of crash

As much as I want to finish the game, I feel like I'm basically playing a Crash to desktop simulator with a shooter tacked on.

My view of this game is actually neutral. The original 1994 game wasn't particularly notable and neither is this remake, but both have some merit. If it's cheap and you love FPSes, it's probably worth playing.

Positives:

    • An awesome modern take on the original music
    • Fast-paced with big guns, lots of explosions and gibs, and dog mode
    • Humour, though some of it does get old quickly
    • Many aspects are true to the original game
    • The dev team made the game with heart and did a lot of work to make it feel modern (bear in mind it was made in 2013)

Negatives

    • Being true to the original game means aspects of game design that we've moved away from, like linear level design and cheap deaths
    • The checkpoint system is annoying: you often don't know when you're about to hit one and once you do you can't go back
    • Some truly aggravating platforming that's made worse by having an overly slow or overly fast character
    • The game's graphics aren't as vivid as the original's
    • The intro and outro cutscenes are budget (understandable, but meh)

SuperFly

Absolutely bonkers.
A fitting update to the classic title, ROTT'13 brings the insanity of the old game to new blood.

Comedic tones are ramped up, and the absurdity and shit-talk actually got some genuine laughs out of me, straight-away.
If you enjoyed the original, you'll probably like this.
If you like your shooters breakneck-paced and insane, with a 'throw-everything-at-the-wall' aesthetic, then this is also for you.

Players take control of different agents -- who have different speeds, durability, weapon-specialties, one-liners, etc. This does affect your effectiveness with puzzles, et al.
There's also plenty of new lore and comicbook-trappings to immerse yourself in, if that's your bag.

Nothing revolutionary. What you see is what you get.

Actually unplayably bad, first person platforming with instadeath on failure should not be a thing, also crashes to desktop frequently and within a few hours play quickloading also becomes impossible as this will also cause the game to crash.

absolutely do not buy

This game is a bit of a turd.
It crashes at the first level.
The movement is way too jittery and mental.
The game music is crap along with the voice acting.

Even though this game is janky af and poorly optimized, the actual gameplay is still hella fun.

If you can tolerate some jank here and there, then I think this game is definitely worth your time.

The Greatest
The Greatest

The good:
-Andrew Hulshult soundtrack.
-Great fast paced gameplay.
-Real meaty guns and explosions and gore flying everywhere.

The Bad:
-Regular crashes.
-Too much platforming for the imprecise controls the game has.
-Sometimes when getting shot at, it takes multiple full 360 rotations to figure out where the damage is coming from.
-Enemies are way too bullet spongy, specially in the later episodes.
-Bosses are not fun at all. They take forever to kill and have cheesy 1hit kill attacks.
-Buttons to open main paths are sometimes hidden better than secrets in an average game.

Mostly Harmless :/
Mostly Harmless :/

If there was a "Maybe" option I'd choose that but since there isn't, it's a "No". At 15-20$ there are many boomer shooters doing quite successfully what Rise of the Triad tries and sort of fails to do.

Enjoyed the overall gameplay even on an older laptop that didn't have the hardware to run it with any grace. Now installed on a brand new and loaded gaming laptop and very much looking forward to playing it for real this time.

Son Gokkun!
Son Gokkun!

pros:
-it's nice seeing that apogee logo again
-there are some throwbacks to the original (secrets, etc.)
-item sound effects are nice
cons:
-lacks the wackiness or charm of the original
-first boss battle is not fun
-poor jumping mechanics + platforming sections = not a good time
-game penalizes your score for quick loading (see above point for why this is a problem)
-enemy AI doesn't activate sometimes. enter a room and they just stand there
-if enemies collide with each other, one may end up on the shoulders of the other. hilarious, but not good.
-animations are derp
other notes:
-feels like an amateur unity project. it's like a marginally better version of Duke Nukem Forever.

An excellent and underrated remake of a 1990s classic.

The visuals are pretty decent. The levels have been remade with love and care for the source material and it truly shows. They now look like real places while still keeping the classical layout mostly intact apart from a few updates. The sound design is generally okay. The cutscenes are presented in a comic book style instead of the original slideshows, which is a nice touch I really appreciate.

The soundtrack is absolutely amazing. The game features metal remixes of the original tracks by Andrew Hulshult (Quake Champions, Dusk, Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods etc.) which stay true to Lee Jackson's iconic original score while presenting them in a completely different and rather interesting way.

The gameplay is a mix between modern and classic, with the modern elements like reloading, iron sights etc. being completely optional. Enemies still mostly keep their classic behaviours and in general a lot of the signature classic feel and mechanics have been either kept intact or updated. They even kept in the legendary dog mode!

The story is nearly identical to the original game. A cult known as Triad worshipping a mythical being known as El Obscuro has taken over an island near the coast of California, planning to destroy LA and take over the world. A special unit known as H.U.N.T. was sent to the island to stop them and save the world. The story in general is peppered with the signature humour in the style of the original and does not take itself seriously.

As for the negatives, the game runs on Unreal Engine 3, so you will definitely experience some stuttering while loading new areas and slow texture streaming. The ending was also slightly changed so the game ends on a sequel hook which will probably never get picked up on again.

TLDR;
+Graphics
+Sound design
+Classic feel
+Humour and story
+Atmosphere

-Common UE3 issues
-Ends on a cliffhanger

An underrated remake of a 1995 classic that to me defitely lives up to the expectations.

If you enjoy classic 90's styled FPS games you will enjoy Rise of the Triad, as it is in every like one of those type of titles.
Except it's a little more modernized in graphics and game-play.

This game is so unbelievable fun, when I first started in I was angry at the negative reviews I remembered is getting back when it came out. Then it crashed. Again, and again, and again.... This game is NOT stable, and this is in comparison to a lot of other games that I play that are very unstable. I've read online that a slightly older video card and/ or an older version of Windows might help with the stability issues somewhat, but even then I've heard that it's a slight improvement at best. What worked for me was to go into the advanced settings in the launcher and turn off just about all of the optional features, like PhysX, bloom, light shafts, dynamic shadows, etc... I left all of the texture and detail settings on Ludicrous and still got over 150 FPS on my 2070, and I didn't miss the extra features because this game moves way too fast for any of that stuff to be noticeable. I would also note that in some levels you just will not be able to load quicksaves without crashing the game. If you try to load a quicksave and the game crashes on you, 99% of the time that just means that saves are bugged on that level and you are going to have to rely on the checkpoints. This was especially annoying because the level that I had particular trouble with this on was the obstacle course/ platforming trials level which was so frustrating I almost ragequit right then and there. But I'm glad I didn't.

That said, the gameplay is hectically fast, and just as bonkers and over-the-top as the original. If you are looking for a true successor to the original game, this is it. If not for the bugs I would rate this game a 9/10, but honestly the fact that I've spent almost as much time going through task manager to find "Ludicrous Game" to kill than I have actually playing it, I can really only rate this a thumbs up because it manages to just tip over 5 with how fun it is. You may have better luck than I if you are running older hardware or an older OS, but even with the crashes this game has been worth playing.

Why don't more people like this???
People have called this game Janky and it’s the jankiness that makes it so fun!
Mowing through nazis like grass.
Throwing one liners like they’re going out of fashion
All at the speed of light - like this looks easy but it’s actually pretty tough. And this isn’t ludicrous.
You dont want to see ludicrous
Wolfenstein on steroids
This game does not let up. It scoffs at console players and threatens you for quitting, in typical 90s game fashion.
Literally does what no other modern game was willing to do

Very underrated title. It's an awesome, fast-paced, and i mean really fast-paced, blast from the past.

There may be some small janky issues here and there but the game doesn't promise to be more than it actually is.

It feels refreshing to play a singleplayer FPS game that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's well worth a buy.

Good gameplay and soundtrack marred by bugs, problems with enemy spawning (good luck going for 100 percent level completions when you're always a few guys short because buddy decided to take a day off and not show up to work) and the annoyingly inconsistent rocket jump.

Idk man it looks nice but the shooting feels pretty stiff. The enemies will fall to the ground and die only to just completely get up without animation and start shooting. Still a lot of bugs in this one. There's nothing this game does better than the classics: Doom, Duke Nukem (even Forever played better than this), Quake, and Shadow Warrior. I can see the appeal if you grew up playing the original, but don't hold it to the higher standards of previous remakes of similar Old School Fast-Paced FPS games.

Your Tanuki Girlfriend

This game is... honestly a marvel

Shooting feels very stiff and clunky
I'd constantly get stuck on small objects in the world
Its incredibly hard to determine where damage is coming from
The game causes me motion sickness even with motion blur turned off, and literally no game has caused me motion sickness before

Professor Fondue

I got this because I wanted to see how a lot of the New Blood guys started out, and Christ you can really tell this is where they started out if you know what I mean. The people who made this clearly had a lot of love for the original but they just didn't have the experience to make it work yet.

The games preforms horribly, like the people who made it didn't know how to code yet, the voice acting sounds like developers did it, and the enemy design/ai is some of the worst I have ever seen.

I hold no ill will towards this game's developers, a lot of them moved on to great things and I respect their passion for the source material, but the cold hard truth is that this game in particular was just a bump in the road that most of us would rather forget.

Just listen to the soundtrack instead.

Greatest strength: Andrew Hulshult soundtrack

Nice: as a reboot of the original it looks pretty nice and is quite faithful to the original idea of being a naïve and surreal shooter with a cheesy story and ludicrous gibs.

Weak: I have a hard time finding the enemies. Visibility sucks. They're shooting at me, there's no cover anywhere, I'm a sitting duck taking fire and still I can't see them. Baddies with pistols have an absurd effective range and accuracy. I get lost often. Jumping is clunky. Overall, these weaknesses turn the game, even in its first levels, into something much harder than the original ROTT. It was supposed to be a more casual shooter, not something this hard.

Intro

While I do recommend this game, it comes with a big asterisk. By that I mean, it has a lot of problems and if you aren't willing to overlook most of them, you won't enjoy it at all. Considering I was able to do that, as well as look at it as Dave Oshry's first game, I could only rag on it for so long until it felt pointless to do so.

Positives

+ Dismemberment.
+ Great soundtrack.
+ Good enemy variety.
+ Steam Workshop support.
+ Very faithful to Rise of the Triad: Dark War.

Negatives

- Most enemies are boring and cheap hit-scanners.
- Last episode feels very shoddily thrown together. In terms of enemy placements and level layouts.
- There's too much platforming. Which would've been fine if the movement was made for it, but it's not.
- Most of the boss fights are bad. Which again, would've been fine if one could save in the midst of boss fights, but you can't. In the console, type 'dipstick' to enable cheats, followed by 'god' to enable invulnerability. You can thank me later.

Pretty fun and exciting, but it feels so buggy that it feels rushed.

but for the most part its fun the guns and the enemies are also not bad

except part 5

this part was nearly impossible with the monks being powerful bullet sponges the deal high damage, taking on one monk is fine but 5 at the same time sucks

but besides that its a good game and is underrated

You might have looked at the trailer and thought: "Yeah, look at that, fast paced shooter like ol'Quake or Unreal Tournament, awesome." But then you play it just to experience a special kind of hell. I was shocked to find this wasn't an in-house game engine, but instead made on top of Unreal 3. Granted, UE3 always felt a little bit off on FPS games, but this is another whole level of horribleness.

Most movement feels completely off. You get constantly stuck on minor objects and there are invisible walls everywhere (even between platforms you should be able to easily jump across). Besides this, you'll have to fight a thousands bugs along the way. This includes invisible walls that should have been scripted out when you open a door, but remain there, which too many times forces you to reload checkpoints/maps.

Also, because you don't know the layout of the maps (and the level design frankly isn't good at all) you'll be wandering around for far too long in these strangely claustrophobic over crowded maps that also look too bland for you to spot enemies in. Speaking of, the enemies are also awful, I had a little chuckle with Big John, but everything else was terrible spongy nightmare fuel filled with weird eldrichian animation and movement that is too fast and wobbly. The weapon selection is also rather weak, as much as I might approve reloading being purely aesthetic.

This is the first game made by some of the New Blood folks, and they tried their darnest to recreate one of the earliest Doom-clones. And with their new name they've also changed gears. Wherein now they preferred less bombastic visuals, diverting from modern shooters, going to more blocky and retro style, and spending their dev time on gameplay, level design and balancing the whole spectacle - frankly a much wiser choice than what we see here.

RISE OF THE TRIAD!!!

A so called Rebirth of the orginial game though I have never played the classic version.

A fast paced high action FPS / Arcade Treasure hunt game, you will be blasting through soldiers and finding secrets as some levels can have double digit secret rooms containing collectible coins to get the highest score

I really loved the time spent with this title, little to no bugs on the whole play through, highest settings were very fluid (100+ Fps) and the weapon types are really really fun to use, absolutely ludicrous! 🔫

The things I hated which almost made me rage quit this game was the platforming.. its a fast paced game so your jumps and movement is extremely sensitive..

The Room - Episode 2 level 2.. honestly F*ck this level.. no seriously you have 4 puzzles you need to complete with no quicksave and they are probably the most insane platforming I have seen in a FPS.. would make Mario seem impossible... I was stuck on this shit for 40 mins not shooting or having fun..

Ok Rant over because I still had an amazing time with this.. fun old schooling feeling FPS with great humor thrown in.. F*ck the platforming though

8/10 as I bought it 90% off and had a great time

An old-school inspired shooter that could be seen as the precursor to today's boomer-shooter renaissance. It keeps slavishly to a lot of the aspects of the original, modernizing a few aspects (such as the knife always being equipped or allowing magical weapons to be equipped alongside the heavy explosives as well) while forgoing changing things that were less than well-received such as iffy platforming (though nothing as egregious as Extreme ROT) and very obtuse secret hunting as well. While I've praised the game so far, and will continue to do so, I will state that there exists a plethora of issues that just hurt the game too much. It makes sense that the current score is mixed because this game is, ultimately, a mediocre game to play a good bit of time.

Pros:
-The shooting sections are genuinely fun, classic run and gun with gibs and a wide variety of weapons to utilize.
-The visuals and aesthetics are pleasant to the eye and keep things varied, helping to avoid the repetitive environments of the classic ROT
-The soundtrack is phenomenal and helped to put Andrew Hushult on the map, remaining faithful to the original soundtrack while adding his own unique flair to the remixed tracks. Game even has the option to enable the classic music too for those who may prefer it.

Mixed:
-The platforming isn't always good, often being too specific and being too punishing at times as well. But some sections are fun, just not enough.
-The enemies are usually competent but are often somewhat brain-dead and can be exploited to kill them as they stand silently.
-They kind of improved secrets compared to the original, but it is still a slog and clues are sparsely given.
-the design of the levels themselves can sometimes be too big or empty, but is often enough tolerable and even enjoyable into the harder areas, with some clever areas spread throughout.

Cons:
-While the game can play well thanks to the patches, it still has issues with its framerates and can stutter occasionally.
-Besides that, the physics are real rough and it is too easy for players and AI to get stuck on the geometry even when the area is relatively flat.
-The bosses are dreadful after the first and never get better, only getting worse and worse. Too much damage, too many attacks with low windup, and arenas that are not good for the fights themselves.
-controls needed ironing out, even with mouse and keyboard it can be messy (and this is coming from someone who beat Doom Eternal and it’s dlc on Ultra Nightmare).
-The game over guy is annoying and cannot be muted nor killed, I hate him and I just want to say I beat the game on ludicrous with a controller.

Overall, it is a fun but flawed game. If you like shooters like me and can tolerate the flaws, it'll be a decent time. But for everyone else (and even those who can tolerate it as I was getting fighting the final boss), it will likely be a slog even on the lower difficulties (played and completed it on ludicrous).

Between the terrible default mouse input, crashes, general performance issues, and hours of stress trying to rectify those things, my initial impressions of Rise of the Triad were not good. By the time I actually got to the game, I was too burnt out from all the hoops I had to jump through to make it playable to stomach any more platforming. I went through the campaign on various difficulties with various characters, sometimes cheating through hazard sections out of spite, all the while muttering to myself "wow this game is shit". And you know, in a lot of ways, it is.

For starters, platforming and navigating environmental hazards are key elements of the gameplay, yet two of the characters are so slow they can't actually get through some of these sections without rocket jumping. That is to say, if you even have a weapon capable of boosting you that won't instantly gib you. The air control isn't godawful once you get used to it, but not intuitive at all. Like, for some reason walking onto a jump pad backwards propels you further. Maybe that's a vestige of the code they used to get rocket jumps to work. Who knows.

Beyond that, most of the enemies you face do not have proper audio/visual cues to let you know when you're being attacked and where from. The generic hitscanning soldiers blend in nigh perfectly with the terrain, and are often positioned on several different floors in several different corners of the map. Their gunfire does not make much noise, nor does it have easily traceable rounds. It makes you have to take special care to locate and dispatch them, but by the time you do so, you're probably almost dead. The original RoTT was similar, except not at all, since you could clearly see the enemy sprites against the environment.

Anyway, at some point after my initial playthrough, I decided I wanted to go back and do it "right". And... my game wouldn't start at all. So I tried to uninstall it, and while I was uninstalling it, it actually booted up, and by some miracle read my .ini files properly and fixed my mouse input and crashes. Amazing.

I threw caution to the wind and picked the highest difficulty and the fastest most fragile character, and it really put things into perspective for me. This game isn't meant to be fair. It isn't meant to be possible without getting your shit kicked in on a blind playthrough. It's a memory game, a brutal trial and error puzzle, and it's exponentially more fun once you vaguely know where, when, and what to shoot. It is extremely satisfying blitzing through nameless mooks with explosives that'd make Build engine protagonists blush, picking off stragglers with sustained MP40 fire, doing everything just right, and still almost dying because you forgot that one guy or stepped into a grinder in your moment of glory.

All of that hassle, all of that strife, all of those (by all rights) bad design choices, and somehow at the end of it I had fun. Is it Stockholm syndrome? Is the amazing soundtrack hypnotizing me into liking the game it has as a backdrop? Did I just finally see what the game was going for and learn to appreciate it? I can't say for certain, but I am glad both RoTT games exist. For better or worse, everything about them is just a "little" off-kilter from convention, and it makes for an interesting experience. They are truly unique amidst a sea of copycat shooters, no matter the era.

I will preface this and say that it is a fun and stupidly violent game in the vain of the original. My only issue with it is that there are at times places were you have to navigate jump puzzles whose reward for failure is an instant kill. And on top of that, reloading to a previous same can cause a crash to desk top which makes these kind of puzzles even more infuriating. If you're good with timed jump puzzles on moving platforms above substances that will instantly kill you then I highly recommend this game. If you're like me with the reflexes of a drunk gold fish, it's probably not for you.

Up there with one of the most frustrating boomer shooters I've ever played. It has a couple of small issues like weak gun sounds and confusing level layout but I can deal with those. What I can't deal with is being constantly killed by enemies I cannot see. The visibility in this game is atrocious. It's very difficult to see or spot the enemies who blend into the environment, and yet they're constantly shooting at you with obscenely effective range and accuracy and you have nowhere to take cover. You pretty much have to take damage first so you can identify where exactly the shooting is coming from. Awful design.

This game has it's fair share of flaws. Some of which are quite annoying sometimes, like getting caught on random geometry in the levels and get stuck so you have to rocket jump yourself free, or the constant flickering of the skybox on most graphic settings, or the fact that you set the graphic options in the launcher and not in the game, which makes it very tidious to try out a setting that works for you.

Despite all the shotcomings, I can not hate this game. In fact I enjoyed playing it and when I was done with it after 40h, I had collected all achievements except four. There is something about the fast paced rocket action of old ROTT 1995 that has been transfered into this reboot in a good way. You don't care about the story, you just want to gibb some enemies with overpowered firepower.

Af first this game felt graphically inferior even for a 2013 title. I remembered that nearly ALL objects and items except the weapon and food pickups were shootable in ROTT 1995. So I was sad to see that that was not the case in this reboot. It hadn't hurted to have the coins and braziers shootable. However a very pleasant surprise was that you could shoot the concrete casing off the walls in some levels. That really added to the cheesy action movie feeling in my opinion.

This game is not for everyone. It is hard, even on easy, with all those platforming elements in some levels. But that is in a way also true to the source material, so I let it pass without bashing on it.

If you want to finish the secret level "Escape from the Vomitorium" you need to set the graphics to low, turn on V-sync and strafe left all the way down the slide or you will never make that jump.

A game that changed the course of history.

Demonstrated new viable game development way: Developed by a remotely working team of specialists from around the globe.

Art: people behind this project really put their souls into locations, models and animations. Breathtaking various levels taking the most out of available assets. Impressive weapon models.

Game design: an improvement of original 1995 masterpiece. Way above your average shooter. Enemies can steal your weapons and play dead, creating stunning unexpected situations on the battlefield. Unique decision making: should you throw all your rockets at this crowd of bad guys or save some for cooking priest porridge to make it give you more health? Pick up a Powerup or a Powerdown, and your situation will dramatically change.

Impressive kind of Ludicrous: everything, from enemy behaviours and cutscenes to occasional bug or glitch organically comes together and forms very entertaining and funny First Person Shooter experience.

Development Kit: a set of modding tools is available. It's not over after the credits roll. New adventures are at your disposal:

This is a very faithful reboot of the 1995 classic ROTT. It keeps the same run-and-gun style, excessive violence, crude humour, platforming, secrets, great soundtrack. Its all there, spruced up to the modern age. It doesn't really reinvent anything, and if you aren't a fan of 90's shooter you probably won't like this. But that doesn't change the fact that its well made (not without some issues, and it can be rather unforgiving - particularly so on hard difficulty). And the soundtrack is exceptional.

The developers owe me a personal apology for making this game.

It kick started the modern retro-FPS trend, but this singular game is just awful. All I felt was pain and regret.

Let's be 100% real here, this game is bad. The devs themselves agree that it is, there's really no denying that this game is game is an absolute mess. However, it's a very fun and charming mess and I have a hard time hating it. There was so much passion behind the creation of this game and you can tell the devs really loved Rise of the Triad as well as other classic FPS games and just wanted to make something fun for the fans. The only issue is they didn't have the skill or the budget at the time, so what we got is incredibly buggy and unpolished.

What Rise of the Triad is is a singelplayer linear FPS, it's very arcadey and has lots of platforming and a big focus on powerups (most of the guns in this game are even powerups!) it's got a nice sense of humor and doesn't take itself seriously at all. It's pretty faithful to the original game and features most of the same gameplay elements but with reimagined levels and enemies. Everything has a nice layer of jank to it though, it genuinely feels like a fan mod of Serious Sam or something at times. You'll clip through objects or your guns will just disappear sometimes, jump pads will fling you in odd directions or you'll get stuck in the wall unable to move, that kinda stuff is very common here.

It's really not something I can recommend to most people, if you're a big fan of the genre however it's interesting to play because Rise of the Triad 2013 was the first true classic-style FPS game we had in the modern day resurgence of the genre and it's partially influential in that way. Before DOOM 2016, before Shadow Warrior 2013, there was this and back then it was the best we had lol.

You can tell how a game was made from it's spirit, from the way it feels. Some games feel like they were made on an assembly line; perfectly functional but bland. Other games feel like they were made by people who poured their heart and soul into it and despite it's flaws, the game's character is what endears it to you. ROTT 2013 is the latter, a labour of love. Unfortunately, rather than hard work or competent voice acting or QA testing, the things that Interceptor Studios loved was burps and farts, and making fun of the player every time they die in this dumpster-fire, barely-functional game, Truly, the game literally says "You suck" after every few deaths. They certainly didn't love their fans at the time. This game is not hard, I breezed through it on Ludicrous difficulty and got the speed run achievement on my first try (although to be fair that's because the achievements, like everything else, are broken). 90% of my deaths were from broken physics, broken platforming, and sometimes from thin air as I walk past a flame chute that had subsided but then killed me instantly even though I had a 100% durability asbestos armour. The other 10% came from the bosses, which are so poorly designed and broken that they can only be beaten by cheesing them and exploiting their AI (and I'm not just talking about the final boss, either)

I would say that I would take the bland, assembly line, functional game over this heart-felt turd, but that is a false dichotomy. There are many games made by the AAA machine that are innovative and full of character, like the peerless Doom Eternal, and there are many games that are built rock-solid on a small budget by genuine creators, like Undertale or Into the Breach. I think the people who made ROTT 2013 just didn't care about quality, or didn't have the talent to make a quality product.

Also the soundtrack is overrated.

Never really knew about the original until much later after I'd played just about every FPS and Doom clone out there. While this game pays homage to the original in the sense that it is extremely violent with plenty of gibs and offers a variety of predominately explosive weapons.

What ruins this game for me is the platforming. It's like an arcade version of Super Mario at times. Lot's of moving jump puzzles over surfaces that mark a insta-kill if you fail in your jump timing. Furthermore, the game suffers from some annoying crashes that more often then not crash to OS. So if you were white knuckling it in some jump puzzle and the game crashes then you get to try again. This alone ruined the experience for me which is kinda sad because the game had all the makings of a classic shooter.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! This game is utterly broken. Like broken in the sense it just doesn't work on any piece of hardware I've ever tried it on. Very seldom do I feel like I literally threw away my money on a game, but this is one case where that's absolutely the situation. It's almost 10 years later, playing with specs well above the recommended requirements & the game still runs at unplayable framerates on the lowest settings. I can't honestly even "review" the game itself because despite the nearly 90 minutes playtime you see on my account? That's all been spent in the settings trying to get the thing to actually work.

Es un re inicio del juego para DOS Rise of The Triad: Dark War, lo recomiendo, los jefes mejorados y los niveles excelentes, un juego de mucha acción.

Love this game. There are no political agendas. Just pure Ultra Violence.

I like it simple. Give me a selection of weapons to kill bad guys with and I'm set.

The music is also pretty badass and gets you in the slaying mood.

Running around as a bunny hopping ninja armed to the teeth is true entertainment.

Highly recommended if you love any classic shooters.

Reminds me of Wolfenstein as well as Quack.

For Interceptor Entertainment's first game, this was incredibly inspiring and enjoyable. I am a big fan of the original ROTT and this was worth it just to experience their reimagining of the game's first mission. Good fun.

I had some fun with the game but it's such a janky, glitchy, unpolished mess that I can't recommend buying it.
Grindy achievements, broken AI, imbalanced final boss, enemies glitching through doors, you getting stuck in terrain, constant freezes and crashes, broken saves...
Most of the shooting levels are fine but then they force you into extremely difficult platforming levels with barely any checkpoints, where you can't quicksave because it breaks the door triggers and makes the level unfinishable.
Jesus.

Never played the original, but this Rise of the Triad: Dark War remake holds true to Wolfenstein 3D style gameplay. Four episodes, five levels each with a final boss on each episode. Fair assortment of guns, plenty of gore and gibs, secret areas, and a mildly entertaining story. It's not fantastic, but it doesn't suck either.

Game was okay, final boss was annoying. Just wait for a sale.
I played this game last April, and uninstalled it quickly afterward.
As of writing this in October, I stumbled across a 12 GB log file left behind in my Documents folder. Thanks I guess?

I'm only recommending this for the nostalgia, when it's on sale.

Platformer sections are nightmare, and quicksave is your friend. Combat is so simplistic it could be fun but it isn't with skills enemy have like constant barrel roll, stealing your weapon or throwing net at you. Enemies often bug and just stand.Just run through and abuse everything you can, overall it's Bad game.

Overall, if you want to experience the mid 90s, play the original. If you want a decently fun, simplistic modern shooter that reminds you of the 90s, play this.

Update: Having issues w/ quick saves getting corrupted running under Proton on Linux. Not sure that's an issue on Windows but be aware it can be extremely frustrating, especially on the platforming parts.

This is the worst game in the boomer shooter genre I've ever played.
Would be more playable if it didn't crash every 40 seconds. I bought it for the soundtrack.

I thought this was a lot of fun. It's an over the top FPS like the 90's boomer shooters. It's not super well optimized, but if you are looking for a super fast-paced FPS that is super gory and still has a sense of irreverent humor, you can't find much better from a game post circa-2005 when the Call of Duty craze kicked in.

Haven't beaten the game entirely yet but so far I've been having lots of fun!
