Nice graphics and music. But the gameplay... How can jumping into an enemy be a special attack? That's the same thing you would do if you just weren't watching the screen. Particularly considering how small and constrained the play area tends to be.

Comments are off but I do accept clown awards.

A fun, challenging, and rewarding game, as someone who isn't great at platforming and doesn't deal well with 'bullet hell' type encounters, this game is a blast!

Vertical action rogue-lite platformer that is kind of a blend of Towerfall and Mega Man with hell-themed visuals and a metal score. One character (as featured in the video above) is a brawler, while the other has a ranged attack with less health but more powerful. Easy to pick up and the more time you put in the more you advance and unlock additional things to bring in with you to make traversing the many levels and various paths easier. Fun old-school tower climbing title fans of nightmarish gaming beat 'em ups will enjoy at a price point that feels appropriate for the type of game it is.

This is just a genuine surprise, really. I came in it not expecting anything, but seriously from the moment I started it I was in love. I love the soundtrack and the animations. Just a great time overall. I just died on my first playthrough but I had to come in here and say GET THIS GAME FFS. It's literally a dungeon crawler with a spicy hellish meatball on top. Totally worth it

Old school arcade game with beautiful art, animations, sounds and gameplay. Just perfect and challenging.

You can unlock some passive talent and relic, but it's hardcore mode, so you'll restart from first chapter on death.
If you complete the game, you can restart with increased difficulty and so on, besides extra modes like challenges.

Here is a full run at difficulty level 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C5K0DihNrw
(It's stuttering a bit as i had an unfixed issue)

Heyyyy this is a dang fine Early Acess entry into the ever-expanding roguelite genre.
But here we have a streamlined level design - you go up. thats it!
however, the way things happen are quite random, and you are also given choices of how to progress at times - such as choosing your next room to be the one where you are chased by fire, or perhpas you wanna try your luck at the spire where you have to leap from enemey to enemy while racing against a set of nasty buzzsaws, and a spike lined wall!
they get really creative with how they mix it up. Every part of the levels feels fun, and new.

MIx in two playable characters, " perks " you can unlock and use for your run ( only use one )
and then in the runs, you earn a currency ( let's call it blood ) tobuy perks for the run.
things such as, more inviincible frames when you're hurt, more powerto artifact weps. heal when you destroy 7 enemies in a row etc/

Rght now, the game isn't feature or content-complete. A full run will only last a bout 2 major bosses ( but it's a dang tough crawl to the top of the not-finished tower! )

plenty of progression, and incentive to push on a few moreruns.

This game NAILS the " just one more try! " addicitve loop that all the good roguelites capture.

absolutely worth buying into early access, you won't regret it.

If you're browsing reviews and trying to figure out if this game is worth your time and money then here is a quick answer for you: YES. It's a must have game for anyone who enjoys action packed platformers!

What attracted me when I first saw this game was its overall concept. I will keep it simple for you: you control a demonic creature who's mission is to escape Hell. And you gotta love the devs take on Hell in this game. It's basically a vertical tower-like place which you have to ascend in order to make your way out of this demons infested nightmare. Pretty creative in my opinion. So I guess that makes it a vertical action platformer where you fight through hordes of demons trying to ascend higher and higher.

The gameplay is pretty addictive. You smash demons left and right while trying to get to the top of some weird hellish tower. Every tower has its own boss which is pretty strong so make sure to get enough power ups on your way. It might sound simple but in reality the devs made it insanely replayable by adding the portal system. That means that every tower (sub level) in this game ends with two portals which you have to choose between in order to progress. Every portal leads to a unique tower with its own specific traps and trials. Think of them as circles of Hell I guess. Sometimes it's poison, sometimes its blades or lava (oh yeah BTW the devs seem to be familiar with the whole "Floor is lava" thing LOL). So every time you get to the top of a tower and see two portals you keep thinking where is it gonna take me now?

One thing that absolutely nailed this game for me is the awesome perk system. Yeah I know you call them talents but I like the word perks more. So yeah you earn currency as you progress and every once in a while you get to choose between 3 new talents/perks which give you a small buff. And OMG they are SOOOO MANY. And it's soooo cool choosing between them trying to come up with the most optimal OP build to simply smash the boss to pieces.

And of course you simply can't forget about the crazy metal soundtrack. I don't know how to best describe it. I'm just gonna say that this mixture of Gothic Metal, Power Metal and Black Metal is absolutely what this game needs.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to say this game is flawless. I see a lot of room for improvement here: for example the combat system could use some variety like combos or something. However considering how small the devs team is and also taking into account that this game is still in early access I physically can't nitpick. If any indie projects deserve a chance it's this one!

sakuragirokutaro

Loved the simple, yet challenging gameplay. The artifact weapons are fun to use, without being too OP. Hellbreak system is really fun, especially on the levels where you have to climb fast.

well i just recently boot up the game and when first run i trough suddenly i'm hooked up with the game, it's feel responsive and tight when i'm controlling my character, the pacing of the game also so good you can hack and slash enemy with fast or more careful approach all decision in your hand, design character also good and look badass, the music just my taste honestly so that's good. but with all of that there some room for improvment for this game first variety, not just amount of enemy but also on attack pattern on them, second some projectile attack it's too small and sometime blend with colour in the level i dont know it's just my eyes or something but i hope they check that. ok for now just it honestly and i'm not long in the game but have defeat curently last boss. this game not yet a masterpiece game but it's have big potential to be that.
and when i know the dev from my country indonesia i fell so proud on them, just good luck guys..

By god are the controls awful......you see in the options the control scheme and see that there is a distinction between jump and attack.....there is no difference, jumping is the attack.....its god awful. Hideous to say the least. A double jump wont work lots of times and when trying to hit a grounded enemy that is right beside you....you of course jump in the air first.
I hate it.
Doesnt take long to realize that, the game is not for me due to the controls.
Definitely getting a refund and have to say its no good in this state. Reviews stated the awesome metal music and that its a blend of Towerfall Ascension and Binding of Isaac, its nowhere near these two, both in quality and genre.
Metal music? Its not in this game. Valfaris has awesome metal music, this here is more Castlevania like, not bad at all, but no metal.

heavy metal! not just the soundtrack - the whole game. nice pixel art and lovely hellish-themed (dante's inferno like). yes still in development but already nice to play. controls with ps4 controller work but as others already mentioned - sometimes they're clunky. double jump is sometimes hard to accomplish which can be frustrating at times. hope for lots of future updates & content and polish of controls.

I've enjoyed it, but at some point in time my xbox controller doesn't seem correctly compatible with it. Both jump and attack function simultaneously, regardless of the button I press. I can't rebind the button config therefore it's unplayable. I've tried this on two separate computers now.

I know this behavior is incorrect as it works fine on the keyboard.

in general I like the game, it has potential. but I have some criticisms. I would like to see more content, as in more chapters. bosses, and warriors. also i'd be nice if they could fix all the various bugs iv'e only encountered a bug with the Helberos mini boss and the false judge(yes I know the game is still in development and they are going to fix bugs and add more content it's just the game gets boring fast and I want to play more of it). also the game is confusing because there's no tutorial, the different bad-ass names for everything(except for the bosses not the mini bosses), and the Grimoire doesn't explain how the enemies fight or what there states are. also I know its supposed to be slightly rng but like iv'e noticed that the further I get in a run it either gets harder or more likely easier. when it gets harder it's because I get a room with a lot of hazards and I run into them and take a lot of damage or something like that. and because I don't know what the names for the different rooms or levels or what ever there called I sometimes chose a room that I suck at and then I take a lot of damage. again I like the game and my main complaint is that I want more of it and for it to be polished(which I know should eventually happen).

I am between giving this a thumbs down and up , dont get me wrong , the game is pretty good , but lack of content is a problem , I understand that the game is still early access , but I played it on version 0.94 .. thats pretty close to 1.0 , and at this rate , I do not think the final release will have enough content. I will revist the game when its released , right now the two problems are : 1- lack of content (already said) 2- There is no RNG whatsoever in the game , the levels are not randomly generated and the power ups always appear in the same sequence 3- its quite easy being a rouge like , the diffcuilty does not get harder much when finishing the game again and again like in deadcells. the incriments are quite very small .. I finished the game 4 times in a row without dying once , I quite after that because I found it very repetative and quite easy.

I actually enjoy this game more than hades. Not that either game is bad but this game certainly strikes the nail on the head with what it is doing. the gameplay is fast and quick combined with the music and sounds from hits its solid. Gameplay is good and overall things feel polished. For this to be an early access game and what i've so far played im really looking foward to seeing how much more is in the game as well with what will come out next.

game is good for someone who like me may not have allot of time when i get home after work and instead of investing time into something more consuming. Any body can easily pick up a controller and look at the simple controls and immediately start playing. no need to worry about how much time i can invest and whether or not it would be worth it because id just end up having to stop playing about the time i was getting into it.

Also i picked this game up during the sale for about 10$ i believe it was well worth it.

this game is amazing. the gameplay is fast and feels awesome, the pixel art looks incredible, the music is amazing, and the three different character's all play different. my only problem is that the game doesn't have enough content. i put 5 hours in and beat the final boss with all three characters. it feels like a game that's halfway through early access instead of 90 percent. pick it up on a sale or once the game fully comes out.

Responsive controls and fun game play.
Upgrade system .
Choice to do challenge.
Characters: Different attack style and base stats.

-
Too easy, finished all levels/bosses on first run. Cleared the game on all characters in 110 min. (add game mode on start to up the ante?).
I couldn't figure out what the Re-Run did. (what was the point of doing them?).
Maps all look and feel the same, procedural generation could help a lot. Try to up the biome changes between levels.
Upgrades always follow the same progression, some randomization could spice things up (more of the wouldn't hurt either).
Challenges too easy, I always choose to do them.

Great base of a game, but unfortunately fall short on the content.

ps. If I've missed something the meny was a bit haphazard.
pps. Didn't try out the challenge mode.

Fallow
Fallow

Amazing game but you cant use mouse controls
Edit: after not playing for many updates i thought id redo this...
This is basically just a super hard platformor/fighting game, if you're into casually playing games i would not recommend this, id also recommend that the devs add a "Practice mode" where you cant die but it doesn't give you any blitz, i think it would make the game fun for everyone INSTEAD OF AN ANNOYING RAGE GAME WHERE YOU KEEP DYEING TO BEELZEBUB BECAUSE MY GOD THAT GUY IS ANNOYING AND OVERWHELMING HARD (speaking from personal experience) I still think this game is amazing
I give it 8/10

Rising Hell isn't so much your typical Rogue Lite as it is an exercise in vertical catharsis. Every aspect of this game has been crafted not to be refined, sleek, and elegant; but rather to be loud, bombastic, and satisfying.

Explode your enemies, tear them to shreds without a care in the world. Do not fear death. For it is merely the gateway to greater heights in the future. Rise warrior. Hell waits for no one.

Reminds me of a lot of arcade games I played when I was younger. It really gives you the feeling of battling your way out of a pit full of demons, and I love the heavy metal music. Rising hell is approaching 1.0 soon and i just discovered this game, its a Devil May Cry mixed with Celeste type feel and the combo works really well. You play as some badass who looks like the Doom Slayers long lost brother who is a die hard fan of KISS. The soundtrack and menus and the announcer make me feel like im playing a quarter sucking arcade machine and i love that type of feeling. This games great and does a good job at making you feel like an absolute force to be reckoned with, you have to make your way up through hell with platforming challenges and enemies shooting at you, but the enemies are just a glorified bounce pad because most of the enemies on the earlier stages are just a jump boost for you.

Overall the game is pretty good and im looking forward to seeing the 1.0 release

I've been eyeing this game for a while, waiting for it to enter full 1.0 release. I bought it immediately, and so far, I am so, so impressed.

The core controls are simple: you have your attack, you have your jump (which doubles as a cool aerial finisher), and you have your i-frame dash. It's simple, but it works; movement and attacking is buttery smooth, and opens up the real core of the game: the platforming and movement. The platforming and environmental design is simply wonderful. You'll be double-jumping and wall-clinging around as you endlessly climb upwards, using enemies to bolster your height as you dodge saw blades, spikes, and burrowing thorns. As a huge platforming fan, I'm very pleased to see it have such a strong place in the core game design, especially on special zones like the Slaughter Spire, which has you rushing upwards using enemies as platforms while a row of saws rises quickly beneath you. It's challenging, it's frenetic, and, most importantly, it's a ton of fun. It's also worth mentioning the aesthetic is great, too - backgrounds, enemies, and traps are very detailed without becoming cluttered or unclear.

All that about the platforming is not to say the combat isn't good, too! Your attacks, while simple, feel good to use, and you'll find fun temporary upgrades, like an artifact that temporarily turns your claw slashes into sword strikes on the melee character, or a triple shot attack on the ranged demon character. A combo meter and pulsing music keeps the pace fast with a fun arcade feel, too. Since it's a roguelite, there's also a ton of passive buffs and upgrades to find and buy during your run, as well as permanent unlockable relics which alter your gameplay that you can turn on/off before starting a run. There also appears to be a Heat/Ascension-type difficulty climb, too, which is something I always appreciate in a roguelite.

The enemy and boss design also marries the combat and platforming together well, as you'll be jumping around to dodge laser beams, projectiles, and demonic slashes of your foes. Attacks from enemies/bosses are fairly telegraphed, and bosses seem balanced - they have enough HP to demand sustained focus without being damage sponges.

Overall, I'm having a ton of fun so far and look forward to spending much more time with Rising Hell. If you're a roguelite or platformer fan, you'll like this; fans of Scourgebringer and Black Future '88 will also particularly enjoy it. For $10, this is an absolute steal, and totally worth your time!

Edit: Just wanted to edit this review and say that, at a bit under 6 hours in, I've won my first run, and I've adored every moment spent playing! There's still so, so much content I haven't touched, and there's a Slay the Spire Ascension-like difficulty climb present here (called Agony), so I have plenty to keep my busy. Once again reiterating this is worth your time and money!

I quickly found myself hooked to Rising Hell. Simple game mechanics yet takes a while to master. Unlocking the reward Satanic really helps to finish the game.

The pixel art, the presentation and the metallic soundtrack bring back memories of games from the 90's. The comic book style story telling also adds to this flavor.

My only complaint is that the game feels too short. In the devs' defense, the game did just come out of early access, so I guess we can expect a few updates to expand on the story. Maybe even rise up to free Lucifer and keep going higher to conquer the heavens? *wishful thinking*

Rising Hell is an action roguelite where you ascend towers and fight bosses at the top. The games primary protagonist is Arok, a sinner with a power to kill demons. Your goal is to rise up, defeat the devilish hordes, and escape hell. However, there are to other playable character to choose. Each with unique moves.

The pixel art graphics are wonderful, in particular the character and attack animations. The combat is really satisfying and features a combo system to rack up high scores and collect more souls.

Red souls serve as the in-run currency, which you can use to increase your attack power, health bar, or soul drop rate. Another collectable, blight, is used in between runs to unlock artifacts that modify your starting loadout.

The game features three distinctly different worlds, broken up into levels, with challenging bosses waiting for you at the end. It’s pretty short, but the there’s a challenge mode to encourage replaying parts of the game. Great game!

Teetotaler
Teetotaler

Quite a short but fun roguelike. The mechanics are really simple but the game makes you feel really awesome playing it. You can just brute force your way through the game's level but the bosses need some strategy to beat them. Interesting level design too, where each level offers different gimmacs, like an autoscroller, toxic gas room, room full of spike, etc. Top notch pixel art and animation with headbanging heavy metal music, this is really worth to get.

This game just absolutely owns, I couldn't be happier with it for what I paid which was quite affordable.

Beautiful and vibrant pixel art with dynamic backgrounds, a cool and unique mechanic, a killer guitar-solo-heavy soundtrack, fantastic and varied enemies and stages, tough boss battles, this game just has it all! Really needs more exposure because I know for sure that almost everyone who likes 2D action games and roguelikes will enjoy this one.

ScorpionSupreme
ScorpionSupreme

This is a fun retro arcade action game and definitely worth the price. Calling it a "rogue lite" is a bit of a stretch -- the order of the levels is random but the variations are so small that you won't notice. You do however unlock new artifacts and powers as you play, so there's that. The controls are tight and the "metal" theme is fun and different. Definitely worth your time if you like pixel platforming and demon monster slaying.

TingusPingus
TingusPingus

It's definitely a great game but it's very frustating that exists this one bug that occurs while on fights with archdemons, where sometimes in a transition from 1 attack to the other or between phases if you do a hellbreak it freezes your character in place and even though it makes you invincible you also can't attack and there is no way for you to get out of this state, this has made me lose very good runs just because of RNG

Yes! Buy it! It's a no brainer for me. Under $12 for a game that plays and looks great with loads of replay value. If you're not a huge rogue like fan I think there's still good value here for you to run through and beat the campaign once. If you are a rogue like fan or speed runner I believe there are many hours of game play here. Music is good, visuals are good, controls are tight, buffs are powerful and satisfying. Opportunities for many different builds and paths to completion as well as a few game modes to fiddle with. Just get it. For the price you absolutely can not go wrong.

Beat the game on my first run and under an hour. I was flabbergasted if this was all the game had to offer and after examining the achievements, yep. That was it. No other last bosses or anything. Just "challenges" I suppose but there are plenty of other games that are actually fun while doing challenges i.e. Crypt of the Necrodancer.

Trash mobs can be just spammed and instant killed the entire game. Every boss felt like a tutorial boss. Roguelikes typically have replay value if they hold enough difficulty or at least some skill. For a roguelite this should be even more apparent that the game is trash. Roguelites typically have you grind a bit before you're strong enough to beat the entire game...

I haven't tried other characters because it requires you to replay the game to get currency to unlock them, but with only an attack button, there is not much customization - not that any are needed. Trash mobs instant killed before they can attack and boss patterns are overly simplistic.

It would have been cool if there were last boss versions of each character you beat the game with due to the ending.

A fun little game who's fun derives from mercilessly slaughtering demons for your freedom, the mechanics aren't clunky, some demons have special traits like having to use a specific attack in order to even hit them or being able to block certain attacks. The talents allow for many different play styles whether it be artefacts, healing, currency or just more damage it's fun to play with and experiment as you unlock new talents. the bosses are also very fun, they all have different focal point whether it's being a tank or damage based even in-between whereas the final boss is all of the aforementioned points with extra powerful minions and an array of chaotic attacks that makes for a very fun fight, if you're going to get this game then look forward to it. Thank you for reading, i hope it helped :)

Don't know whether to recommend or not really. The music is great, and it is fun, but I beat the whole thing the first time through half an hour. I was kind of expecting to die more and struggle through for a while.

I like it. Wish there was more content though.

as far as a value prospect goes, its not amazing. the game has 3 main playstyles, two of which are fairly similar, all 3 of which will probably end up playing very similar due to a universal mechanic. each has 3 subvariants based on universal collectible items called 'artifact weapons', those being green, blue, and red. these last for maybe a minute or two depending on which character you are playing, but they do make you feel truly strong in that moment. generally each boss guarantees you'll see one, but as far as i can tell, only one, through the course of the fight. each subvariant is unique to each class, and all but maybe one are strictly more useful than having no artifact weapon, that one being the green weapon on rogue, which seems to substantially lower your dps in favor of concentrated damage.

Moving on to that universal mechanic i mentioned earlier, its called hellbreak, when used on a normal enemy, it results in an instant kill, you perform it by jumping onto an enemy and having your collision box collide with a part of the enemies, regardless of up or down momentum. doing so will refresh your tiny secondary jump every successful time you perform the action. It's what youll use most of the time. it completely negates everyone's damage variance in favor of a unique universal mechanic, that while fun to use, never made me feel encouraged to master any class specific abilities. you can use this on minibosses and bosses too, and you definitely will, it isnt an instant kill there though. its still fast, safe, and high damage, especially compared to the pea shooters the ranged classes have.

another universal mechanic is the perk style upgrades you buy with red souls, which function as your main currency, though you can buy red currency for health at the tricksters store, making health somewhat of a secondary currency, it doesnt automatically regenerate, so its a fairly important one, meaning you may want to purchase artifacts to fix that specific issue. they only really work when killing enemies for the most part though. the most powerful one seems to be the 'kill multiple enemies within 7 seconds to heal' one, the others tend to manifest as bonus drops or bonus drops under circumstances. meaning health is valuable, but only really during bosses if you have the multikill one. other ones tend to manifest as simple damage and range upgrades, with the ability to unlock more with continued play. a few are unique, enemies exploding into more damage on kill is a common theme, so they individually aren't that unique.

the main way you seem to differentiate characters is via special artifacts that you can equip prior to a run that trade a pro for a con. i mostly used the jump height and move speed in exchange for taking bonus spike damage, in large part because i felt like it was free. it makes the game more enjoyable, so i consider it the default playstyle now. the characters arent slow, but the artifact makes them fairly swift, which is important when every jump kills. it isn't important that i do anything but dodge and approach, and it helps.

I'll say right now that i could not defeat the second boss, i reached its third phase and decided 'i should stop playing this game before it gets tiring'. the first boss is relatively simple, being a beholder thematically, it is stationary and fires eye based beams. it is a good introductory boss that telegraphs well and spawns enemies in to refill your health a bit in the middle of the fight. the second boss is perhaps 10 times tougher. It has random acid it shoots out from its top, they are clearly aimed at the player, but often, they feel like they come from no where, still, this is the only real chance you have to attack during phase one and two. the telegraphed laser is incredibly hard to see, especially as it blends into the bronze parts of the boss in a very poor contrast way. beyond that he has a slash attack he rarely uses, that ones hard to dodge, but i dont see it often, so it doesn't factor in. those are his phase 1-2 attacks, after that he starts walking around as a spider using a flamethrower attack in addition to his former abilities. I was fairly depleted both times i reached the boss and essentially through in the towel after the second time.

the game alternates between too easy and too hard and i just don't think that's a style i enjoy, i don't plan to attempt a refund or anything though, there's a lot i like here, its just a very microgame sort of experience currently. with 3 characters, i expect varied playstyles, but instead i have varied jump height and max health, everything else is solved by jumping on enemies like mario. i assume that changes, but i'd rather it didn't if it demotes me to using pea shooters.

all in all, i'll recommend the game assuming new content will be added in the future. If that doesn't happen, i wouldn't buy it.

if clearing the second boss doubles the amount of unique content in the game, i'd certainly have egg on my face, but hey, i doubt it!

i got so many indie games that with some few moments i can tell if the thing is good or bad. at least for my taste. despite this having a very positive rating for all reviews, i have read some bad reviews before buying this game, and now i agree. it pains me to do a negative review, but this is not early access and the game.... well here comes the hard part:
- i bought it cheap, but there are a lot of cheap games better than this
- the mechanics are now shallow: are inexistent. the dash... i didnt even used it. you can jump into enemies and destroy them like it was mario bros which is ABSOLUTE sh!t.
- the scenarios are all exactly the same
- the enemies are all the same in the different scenarios, no variety, nothing interesting.
- it gets boring after 5 mins of doing the same thing, because in one minute you do the same stuff all over and over and over and over
- the metal music is generic

this is good at best, mediocre if im completely sincere. i dont like to give bad reviews, but the fact that sometimes games have ratings above what i consider fair is something that goes beyond my understanding.
this is my opinion. try the game, perhaps you would like it more than i do, and i hope you do

Not much to say here, a lot of roguelike tropes done well and not a very high (starting) difficulty. No revelation here, it's just a lot of fun.

A pleasant vertical "roguelite" with a nice art and good song. The game is short and highly random though. A few things to keep in mind:

General:
* Art is cool and you can add display effects (retro tube? why not).
* Song is good, but it's the same one for every run.
* Game is incredibly short. I've seen people rush it in less than 13 mins. It took me nearly 20 mins to finish a run.
* Game is incredibly random. Took me 8 hours to actually get a build that was worth finishing a run.
* Since the game lacks a lot of roguelike mechanics you will get bored eventually.
* You do have challenges and monthly challenges with a leader board. Not sure if you get anything else besides being at the top of the board though. :-/

Mechanics:
* You can only customize 1 relic. Meaning you don't have a build outside a run.
* You get more relics as you level. It usually takes 2 or 3 runs to get a level and I have seen no difference as levels goes up. It really depends on how far you reach in your run.
* Bosses are ok. Belial is annoying. Everything else is doable.

One could jokingly call this game Down-hell as a joke, given it's theme and obvious Downwell inspiration. But there's a tad more to this game than you'd think. Not to mention, just like that game this is a rogue-lite/endless runner hybrid. But while the similarities don't end there, THANKFULLY Rising Hell has enough differences and its own "flair" and tricks of its own to stand up as its own game with a similar feel rather than a ripoff with just a different coat of paint. The ways it does it are as follows

At it's heart, Rising Hell takes the concept of Downwell and puts it into a Doom esque situation. You are a character who literally got lost and ended up in hell and wants to fight his way out, but obviously, rather than descending down, you are literally fighting your way up, the game literally and figruatively goes in the opposite direction if you will

But that isn't what makes this game an enjoyable one and what makes it different from Downwell, what does is that the games combat almost makes it feel like it has some light brawler/beat em up elements and feels like it has more emphasis on feeling arcade-like given that it has the likes of different floors/routes you can pick as you go as well as a bigger emphasis on getting high combo chains in order to get not only a good score and better unlocks, but also as a way to get currency for items in the shop rooms.

It may not sound like much, but when you also consider that this is all done while having a bigger emhpasis on combat and learning enemy patterns (via using two attack types one melee and one ranged) and Rising Hell also takes elements of a hack n slash into its formula

To put it simply, think DMC or Bayonetta or Dante's Inferno, but if they were arcade games

Last but not least is the bigger emphasis on boss fights, this almost feels like it takes notes from Castlevania or diablo, you'll fight many different evil demons and original monsters as you eagerly claw, shoot, and slash your way to freedom

Does this make this the best game ever? No, but what this game does nicely is that it takes (in my opinion) some unexpected elements from genres that wouldn't otherwise be present in this kind of game and the overall "mishmash" so to speak ends up being a fun game with likeable character design/art choices and quite a banger of a soundtrack as icing on the cake

The game has fast combat, heavy metal, and what feels like a more grotesque appraoch to Castlevania's art mixed with the color pallete and vibes of Doom.

This, is what makes Rising Hell an unexpected but interesting and enjoyable romp, and while no award winner, I can easily recommend it as a fun time killer with a an approach to design that goes shockingly nice

You know the game design thing where the game is made to be more forgiving. Stuff like Coyote time. Or making the hitbox smaller than the sprite. This game takes that to an extreme, every action gives the player a benefit of the doubt. That's true at least for the first character, maybe other characters are made to be less forgiving, but I doubt so.

Well, the game is not bad for one evining, preogressing difficulties are boring, new perks/artifacts are meh. So if you wanna 1-2 evenings of brutal demon smasher, this game is for you. But if u thought, like me, that i would be interesting evolving roguelite, thats not it :)

Remembered that I had seen Mori Calliope play this game a while back on Youtube and afterwards I thought that I would give this game a chance since it looked fun when she had played it.

The game is pretty straight forward with breaking out of Hell. To start off the OP breaks through the gates of Hell, you kill all kinds of crazy creatures that reside in the burning depths, you choose paths that could get you killed, and fighting bosses that are in your way. One thing that I would like to mention is the great soundtrack! The gameplay is addictive but the music is beautifully composed and keep you playing to hear more!!!

In my opinion, it's has an okay story, great gameplay, and the best soundtrack for a small game title. Would recommend people giving this game a shot!!!

I wanted to like this game because of the novel visual and music..
But the game itself lasts 1 1/2 hours really not much depth out side of dash and AOE limited weapons, and basic relics that more or less time unlock your strength for progression, rinse repeat..

https://howlongtobeat.com/game?id=82171

I gave it an hour its Ok, but its way too samey

:sadcthulhu:

My advice is if you want games like this that look and feel like that then Support them, but when it comes to playing it ..

It feels like the Phone app where you run forwards and tap punch over and over..

My advice to the devs

It's really as beautiful as it is it feels very samey..
The mechanics of attacking with limited items feels good; but without more use of mobility it's just too tightly packed like closed in.

The artifacts on perma unlocks are clearly for level progression.
The items are basic health and stat tweaks with rare unlocks that make the replay value feel outside of punch punch dash for a bit..

If there was more environment ways to explore outside of Dante's inferno tower that just goes up, it would feel more like a maze inside a tower..

It just feels like I'm doing the same thing & dying to progress.

I want to feel like a badass tear through, but I also want to feel like..

I'm hitting more than 2 buttons over and over..

The art is freaking astounding, clearly a labor of love and the music is like if oldschool doom appeared in the modern age..

It has Power and Soul but, it just lacks the spirit of replay value.

The story is just that basic, I want out of hell I fight hell. I want to take hell over I fight hell.

There is just that religious trope that many people fall into Ascend we go Up.

I think the levels needed to expand on a wide tower, something that feels more like blasting through castlevania where there is level progression, but also various weapons where you have a heavy attack, a mid attack, and a light attack..

Think of a 2D DMC where you have combos and you have weapon types like a thorn whip for mobility for corners walls & ledges and attacking.

You also have elemental arts for like fire ice ect.

You have swords scythes added speeds and varieties..

Pair it with this art style create a labyrinthine world that is a maze while just going up make it feel like I am traveling in a lengthy spiral winding Hellscape outside of this Dante's Inferno paradox towering inferno that everyone seems to read into.

But its just up jump punch punch dodge over and over.

This game's greatest strength is its simplicity. Jump, kill, dodge, kill, jump.

It may not sound too exciting, but the devs have made sure that this formula is ceaselessly fun. Gameplay feels fantastic. It's not the most in-depth game you'll play this year, but that's alright. It's fun as hell.

Decent Mid-Tier 2D Roguelike Platformer

Rising Hell is pretty fun for a few hours, but lacks staying power

In Rising Hell's main mode, we play as a character from the pits of hell who wishes to escape. It's hard not to draw parallels with Supergiant's game Hades, which was released right around the same time this one was, but Rising Hell has a completely different vibe. Rising Hell is a hectic, high-energy game, featuring four playable characters with different stats and playstyles. The fourth character, who has a sort of ninja-ish vibe, was just added in a recent free update. It also has very stylish, busy pixel art, and an in-your-face soundtrack.

This is a vertical platformer. After picking your character, you will fight through three sections of hell, moving constantly upward - there's a dark-cave-dungeon sort of section, a poison-swamp-jungle area, and a futuristic-metallic-industrial zone, which are further divided into subsections. Each area seems to have about a dozen or so possible subsections, and in a given playthrough, you will encounter about 5 or 6 of them. Generally, each of these subsections has myriad traps and enemies, and every few meters, there are one-way barriers which prevent backtracking.

Gameplay is very simple. You have access to one attack, which auto-combos, and a dash. There's no light/heavy attacks, and no shield, block, or parry mechanics. There's no down-attack, either, which seems like it would be really useful in such a vertical game. There is an upward attack, though, a sort of spinning jump called a "hellbreak", which is easy to execute and is strong enough to one-shot most non-boss enemies. It's a pretty OP move that you are likely to abuse quite a bit, as a hellbreak is several times stronger than a full melee combo, which makes these characters in some odd way feel like a reskinned Sonic the Hedgehog. The controls are generally pretty fluid, though navigating some of the more trap-heavy rooms can be very punishing. Occasionally, a special, limited use weapon may spawn, which grant powers like shock or bleed - these are powerful and fun to use, but there's only three such weapons in the game.

The game is designed as a roguelike, but the execution of this element is pretty basic. The layout of your run is randomized each time you play, but the areas all feel generally pretty similar, without a huge amount of variation. Similarly, at the top of each section, there's a store which will allow you to buy one of three random upgrades that will assist with your run. These upgrades are useful, but tend to boil down to various flavors of attack, vitality, or luck upgrades - there's nothing that wildly changes your playstyle, and no OP synergies to pursue. If you are successful, you unlock "agony" mode, similar to ascension mode in Slay the Spire, with the ability to climb out of hell again and again with increasingly tough modifiers.

There's a bit of persistent progression, too - each run contributes XP towards a global progress bar that slowly unlocks new stuff, usually optional double-edged run modifiers or access to new upgrades during a run. Playing on easier modes disables progress towards this total, and even on hard modes, it's very slow. I've completed all achievements, and still have over half of the progress levels locked, which means that there's 20 or so artifacts/upgrades I was not able to test out.

In addition to the standard mode, there are several other game modes. Mastery of these modes is necessary for many achievements. These modes include a shinobi-esque time attack where killing enemies grants extra seconds on the time limit, a boss challenge mode, an arena survival mode, and a 1HP ironman obstacle course, among others.

Overall, this game has offers some good platforming, and it's got a lovely dev team that seems to be listening to feedback and making regular updates. I had good fun with it for a few hours, but after that it started feeling a little thin. It doesn't help that I really don't enjoy the 2nd world's boss, and you have to fight that sucker a *lot*. Still, it's an overall thumbs up from me.
