Definitely a very underrated and unappreciated game. This is an absolute must buy seeing the direction of the game. Every big update introduces something new and it scratches the itch of a fast paced fps roguelite.

Fix the constant freezing and crashing. Playing a run for an hour just for the game to crash on the final boss is an easy way to get someone like myself to permanently cease playing.

What an extremely pleasant surprise!

For a pretty unknown early access indie game, this has got to be one of the best fast paced shooters I have played that also has a healthy dosing of the rouge-like genre sprinkled on top that easily scratches the itch I get for games like doom and risk of rain.

The maps are very accommodating for the fast paced gameplay, with plenty of platforms to hop onto and rails to slide around and help keep up the pace.

The gunplay in this game is very well done, as all the weapons feel great to use and there are plenty to select from as you advance a run and loot chests. From your standard double barrel shotguns and laser rifles, to chainsaws, mine layers and a flak cannon that is very reminiscent; this game has them all. Add on top the random modifiers that will appear on weapons and you will be hard pressed to find the exact same one twice.

Whilst the fps part is the main focus, the rouge-like part still has a good presence. There are currently four classes (with another one coming in the future) in the game that each have a different passive, ability and melee/ranged attack. As you level up, you will be presented with perks you can unlock that are unique to each class (alongside some generic ones) which can sometimes unlock further additions to previously unlocked perks in a run. Chests and shops will sometimes also offer modifiers that alongside the previously mentioned perks and weapons can create some fun synergies that make you a powerhouse like in any rouge-like. There are also permanent upgrades you can unlock for future runs.

The only downside I can think of for the moment is that the game is currently in early access; which can understandably cause some hesitancy. If that is the case however, I definitely think that you should wishlist the game/note it down as it is very promising. Some other reviews have mentioned crashes/poor optimisation but I have been fortunate and have had no issues.

Highly recommend; this game needs more attention from the public!

Edit: Just wanted to also add that the game has a nice aesthetic and an awesome soundtrack!

its a pretty fun game, but for whatever reason a bug exists that randomly temporarily prevents you from shooting or melee'ing and it honestly ruins the entire experience. No idea what triggers it but it is super frustrating. Seems devs are aware of this bug and are working on a fix but I can't recommend it until then.

honestly I've been having a blast. its scratching the movement shooter itch that titan fall left me with. the music is banging, the weapon choices are super fun, the perks are interesting and everything feels pretty well tuned. I have to physically stop myself from starting another run, its just that easy to keep rolling through runs.

and I haven't even touched the multiplayer

all in all, its some of the most pure fun I've had in a video game recently.

Slow
Slow

I'm definitely going to update this review once the full game has released, but for the early access version I can only say that this game is spectacular and it's truly worth the price and the time, even at this stage of the game.

TL:DR;
Good, fun, lots of weapons, lots of enemy types, movement feels fast and smooth, has great replayability, definitely worth the shot :3

Pros

- The gunplay feels clean and satisfying thanks to both the sound and the visual, weapons are well balanced and it never feels like using some of them cancels out the need to care about precise aiming and careful movement.

- Replayability doesn't feel forced thanks to the large amount of incredibly fun weapons, and the NG+ like mechanic which increases difficulty in a balanced way once you've beaten the former hardest difficulty.

- Enemies aren't dull and repetitive, instead they pose an organic threat that, once again, is really well balanced to keep runs both fun and challenging. Plus there are a large variety of enemy types and variations, and a lot of bosses and minibosses as is, meaning each floor feels increasingly different from the previous ones.

- Movement isn't unnecessarily complicated as the structure of the rooms and the enemy positioning don't really need anything more than sprinting, double jumping and occasionally sliding. But for how simple it is, it simultaneously feels really smooth and really fast.

- There are four characters with a lot of individual abilities, add-ons and perks to unlock and chain in every run, that often make significant changes to how every run is played.

Cons

- If you tend to prefer one character in particular, then the various perks will quickly start to feel a bit repetitive after 2 or 3 runs, but that's a problem only if you don't mind changing characters once in a while.

- There's not really a clear incentive to keep playing after completing a run other than because the gameplay is so pleasant and you get to unlock some minor upgrades. And even if that's enough for me, I'd rather there was some game-changing upgrades or modifiers that unlock after completing some milestones (something like a new game mode where you lose 1hp every second, a boss rush mode, a horde mode or maybe something crazy random where you spawn with random fully upgraded weapons and have to blast your way through rooms of mini bosses). Anyhow some incentive to keep playing other than the gameplay feeling or achievement when they come out, which I hope will be a lot tbh :P

Aaand that's it really, Roboquest presents itself beautifully and it greatly delivers in almost every aspect, so I really can't wait to see what the developers have in store for the game when it fully releases! :3

After just a short introduction to the game, I can already tell I'm going to enjoy Roboquest a lot.

The game plays very fast and the weapons(that I've found so far) are very fun to use. The character progression skill tree looks solid so far. I'm also looking forward to unlocking the other 3 classes, as they all have different traits for me to try out. Acquiring a new weapon or upgrading one with great affixes on it feels meaningful. The AI is very good at tracking you so you need to keep moving. The soundtrack is awesome, very upbeat.

There was never a dull moment really in my first 80 minutes of gameplay. I'm very impressed with Roboquest so far, knowing there's still more for me to see. I definitely think more people should check it out as a good indie FPS.

This game is very well polished for being Early Access, updates have been brought great content, and I dont really have anything negative to say for this game.

Games awesome, Lots of fun, Levels are well designed With nice hidden finds, Weapons are neat with good variety and upgrades are pretty cool ranging from drones to extra explosions. I made a build where i shot rockets with every bullet and they exploded like 4 times a piece. It was quite entertaining. Cant wait to see what the future holds for this game.

Fun stuff. Was on my wishlist for quite a while, but i bought gunfire reborn instead. I enjoy both, but for some reason I am enjoying this one more. Wish there were more players to play with. Easily worth the money. Soundtrack goes hard. Goes on sale fairly often.

TLDR: The game is challenging and fun, great movement, it's DOOM mixed with a roguelike. The character's abilities could use buffs across the board that's my only complaint.

Preface: I have not beaten the game, I have unlocked and tried every class but Engineer. I've made it as far as the second boss.

A fun challenging game! Like other reviews have stated its similar to Gunfire Reborn, but it does not fall under the same design philosophy of that game. Where GR is more of a Hero Shooter, with a focus on knowledge of the game's systems and mechanics, RoboQuest is much more skill-reliant. While there are great synergies with weapons and abilities that can make a run much easier, it is still a test of skill. With the scratch damage mechanic the game plays more like DOOM than Gunfire Reborn. I think melee needs a bigger buff than it currently has to be a more viable play style, and same with long-ranged. Melee can take more damage than they can heal back way too quickly sometimes, and long ranged gameplay in general is punished because of how short lived the health orbs are. Both builds are still viable but are challenging. I think the crit spots on enemies should be a little bigger or more obvious as well. Classes should be buffed across the board as well, the game has got the challenging arena shooter vibes which I love, but if you're going to have hero abilities, make them a little more substantial.

This game has a lot of good things going for it. The music is phenomenal, if you don't buy the game I at least recommend you check out the soundtrack. Whoever made it deserves huge props. Same goes for the comic book styled cutscenes, I love the design and the roughness of them. The game's aesthetic as a whole is wonderful. The movement is fun and fast paced, and there is a huge variety of weapons to choose from. There is a good amount of hidden content and some light metroidvania elements to keep repeat runs interesting.

Some suggestions:
I haven't played every stage so I'll come back and edit this if I'm wrong or later stages I haven't seen address these suggestions but:
- Make the parkour rooms longer and more challenging and more rewarding to balance that change. I think the game has great movement mechanics and not having these rooms use them to their fullest extent is a waste. Maybe add secret extra rooms that require pogo stick or a smart headstomp or rocket jump to get up to, something to reward those playstyles.

- The grinding mechanic is underutilized. Maybe have a stage that has lots of airborne enemies and rails all around that you need to ride over hazards, incorporate them into boss rooms, they're nice to get around the early levels quickly but even then there are other faster methods of getting around.

- classes could use a buff across the board, the starting class's shield should last longer, recon's kit is a little underwhelming in general, I haven't played Engineer yet, and Commando needs either larger buffs or some defensive options

Absolutely drowning in potential. A few issues with sudden drops in frame rate but that doesn't seem to happen to everyone. The multiplayer is still in a rough stage, especially since net code is so hard to not make completely terrible.

Doom plus borderlands combat in a roguelite game, super fun. All of the pieces of a great game are here, all they've gotta do is make it bigger. It's fun, but each run is the same in terms of what you're fighting. The build variation is cool, but they've gotta increase the variety in my opinion, at least in terms of enemy visuals and bosses. Obviously it's in early access and they're releasing regular updates, so I trust them to fill in the dead spots where it comes to content.

EggVillan
EggVillan

Highly recommend this title, even though it is in early access there is about 15 hours of content.

Fast paced chaotic FPS action.
Close quarter battle.
Class based character selection.
Progress system, upgrades to weapons and classes.
Killer weapon / class combinations.
Many different boss battles.
Great art style.
Highly polished.
Sense of accomplishment.
Cures depression.

Develop a deep sense of power as you rip your way through hordes of enemies. Need a shotgun? No problem. Need a shotgun that fires electrified explosive ice crystals? No problem. Need a rockets up your sleeves? No problem. Want to jump on your enemies heads while launching electrified grenades across the arena? No problem.

They did a great job on this game. The game reminds me of gunfire reborn, but it's faster, it scratches that old quake style of gameplay itch that the new dooms have. While gunfire is more about accurately placed shots, this is more about keeping moving while shooting as you have to avoid enemy fire.

You gain wrenches throughout your journey that can be spend on upgrades in your base camp that'll help you progress further.

I've played it for 20 hours now and haven't encountered one bug or glitch that ruined the game.

A++++ on this title.

Only in the game for 5 hours, but it is super fun. Gunplay and movement feels amazing. Art style and animation is fun. Progression feels great. I just unlocked the last class, and they are all pretty dang fun. Combat can be in-your-face rush style if you want, or you can hang back and snipe, and the game rewards you differently depending on what you do. I haven't got past the second area yet, but I'm loving this game and see myself playing it a lot more.

A fantastic shooter Rougelike. Movement is fast and feels incredibly tight: you enter a flow state naturally while playing. If you are a fan of movement shooters and enjoy the wackiness of guns like Borderlands, this game is more than worth your time and money.

Fast-paced action FPS. Smooth combat. The game feel is probably the best around for single player FPS. The systems in the game are not as deep as Gunfire Reborn but the moment to moment gameplay is faster and more visceral.

Immediately yes!

For a game with such a mundane name RoboQuest is actually a really, really fun fps roguelike.

Movement is smooth, agile & just feels right. Fast, instinctive, fun.
The guns have the right amount of punch & there's a decent variety so far.
There's a decent amount of options (keybinds, fov, accessibility, etc.)
The visual style is charming & vibrant - I disabled the onomatopoeia (options, good!)
Sound could use a liiiittle bit more punch in certain things, but it's generally very good.
User feedback is surprisingly good. Music is excellet & very fitting.
There's one boss that's a bit of a stinker, but that can't keep me down.

If Gunfire Reborn is your shtick, you'll probably appreciate this.

Hope the developement team keeps pouring content & features into this game.
German localization wouldn't go amiss either :)

Really fun gameplay. The game's systems are just the cherry on top. I would highly recommend this for anyone liking tight shooters or roguelites! Bosses are fun, gameplay is fast and rewards skill while not forcing you to play any certain way. Continuous new weapons and surprises keep appearing even when I think I've seen it all. Game needs some polish especially in the accessibility department however I would pick it up now.

Sick game. You gotta love these devs for keeping it fresh with the updates. Movement is spot on, shooting is fun. A lot of variety with weapons, I'd like to see more gadgets and a couple more classes.

Honestly it's hard to pinpoint something wrong with the game, I don't even remember how much I paid for this and I can't be bothered to check right now. It's a great game, get it!

Do yourself a favor and get this game.

On sale? Get it. Not on sale? Get it. Wasn't expecting to have so much fun with this title, but for an EA game there is a lot there. I'm still discovering weapons, and still have environments to unlock.

It's tough, but rewarding, and the music bangs. If you like roguelites akin to ROR or Enter the Gungeon, with the locomotion and pacing of DOOM, this is for you.

Ventasis

I'm enjoying it so far, if they play their cards right the final version could rival or even surpass similar games in the FPS/Rougelite genre.

For constructive criticism, I'd like to see improvements to the classes, right now they don't feel distinct enough from each other and I think the main reason for this is their primary ability. Abilities are more fun whenever your character does an animation themselves but it feels like all 4 of the main skills are just *press button and see something else happen*. I like classes where their primary skill feels more involved, an example of this is Qing Yan from Gunfire Reborn, he leaps forward and kicks enemies himself instead of a buff/summon/quick shot. None of the 4 primary skills feel fun to me for this reason. Also there should be more perks when you level up because I keep seeing the same few every time. Additionally, some of the "items" you can buy with power cells feel too horizontal instead of vertical (power wise), for example the one where you gain a 2% chance to be stunned every time you're hit is too harsh. Finally, enemy variety is severely lacking, but it looks like they're addressing this in the current updates.

Anyway its a good game, looking forward to the full release.

safetake
safetake

Cool game.

Doom movement and shooting. Good amount of gun variety. Good rogue-like elements, if you get lucky you can get some pretty OP builds going. Class variety is pretty meh. Feels like there's some nuance and some classes are better than others but they don't feel dramatically different vs something like Borderlands 2.

Enemy variety needs to be increased, not really in the types of enemies but just the look. Every run begins to feel the same when you always fight the same dudes.

Relics do very little, sometimes, rarely the mesh well with something but otherwise I never really noticed any of their effects.

I hope they add a lot of content before release, more enemies, more levels, more weapon affixes. If they do this they could go from a pretty good game to a truly great one.

I was sold on the idea of it being a better FPS Gunfire Reborn and it is. It just came at a cost of Roguelite elements.

The reason Gunfire worked so well for me was because at some point, usually quite early on, it didn't matter you are slow or don't have pixel-perfect aim. If you are smart with your scrolls and know what to look for in weapons you will win. It is a "character building" game first and FPS seconds.

Roboquest is FPS first and foremost and a really good one at that. Obviously not DooM good, but better than most. But at the same time it is so restrictive, so "balanced" and so not fun when it comes to run progression. There are synergies, combinations etc., but they are secondary if not tertiary to just pointing in the right direction, strafing well and shooting.

I will be asking for a refund, but not because it is a bad game. I actually think it is really good. Just not what I was looking for.

Avernalism
Avernalism

Some hard working devs, every time i turn around theres a massive amount of updates and it just keeps getting better. Its more an fps than a traditional roguelike, in that it will test your reflexes and situational awareness more than your ability to character build but it still plays a big role. I prefer something like this as an fps junkie. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a game where they can jump in and get shooting.

『Garunga』
『Garunga』

This is an absolutely fantastic game with so, SO much potential. In its current state, it's already one of the best singleplayer FPS games I've ever played. The movement feels good, your character has enough weight to feel like a powerful metal warrior, but is light enough to let you play like a powerful metal warrior. The guns feel great, very responsive, and super satisfying to use. Game very much has an Overwatch feel to it, but is faster paced (Which are both positives). If you like shooters and/or roguelikes, please do yourself a favor and play this hidden gem. You'll get a great game, and support the devs so they can continue improving their masterpiece

Lieneil

One of the best FPS Rougelite you can play right now, this game has improved a profusion after recent revisions and updates in contrast with the older version since it was first released under early access, though runs feels short and sweet, Roboquest needs to expand it's content more.

Shongololo
Shongololo

So far it looks like a well polished title, not sure why it's in early access. Great fun solo or multiplayer. Nice mix of Borderlands aesthetics and Gunfire Reborn gameplay. Would be nice to have an option to save progress in solo as you need to restart a run when life interrupts you.

Very good game for the price, despite lacking content as of now. You will not regret anything. More weapon archetypes and affixes, more enemy types, more varied environment would be awesome. Still, nothing short of an amazing, fun game.

Vitinho Gaming

Sometimes the game is just BEGGING ME to use a grenade, could really appreciate a grenade option and perks related to it, that change with each class or appears as an option when you lvl up. I also think there should be some kind of momentum when you jump off rails, big fan of the rails tho! Also a dash would be great

ASTROCHRONIC
ASTROCHRONIC

I kind of want to not recommend for the following reasons:
So far that I can tell there is no grenade throwing action.
Doom style shooter, no LT aiming...I hate that. Not sure what LT is reserved for, so far it has no action.
Aesthetic is bland AF.
Overpriced for early access even at 25% off.
Upgrades are pretty skimpy and formulaic.
No dodge roll or dash move. 'B' is crouch or slide if you are moving but the slide is awkward and unsatisfying.
So far, no lock on enemy ability that I have seen.
You never run out of ammo (which is a plus but...) so there are no ammo drops, but also it kind of makes switching guns pointless until you find distinctly different types, like one for sniping heavy damage at a distance, and another for large AOE damage, otherwise there is no reason once you pick your first gun right at the start, to ever use the default hand gun again.
Balancing seems a bit...motley.

Reasons I am going to recommend:
It's fun.
Music and atmosphere is excellent.
Gun action feels good and there is lots of variety, and upgrades between levels.
It is still early access.
It has online multiplayer.
Challenge is aggressive but fair and rewarding...sort of. Could be more rewarding.
Its an FPS rogue-lite.
I am on a gluten free diet and not feeling as irritable as usual.

Rostropovich
Rostropovich

The game has gone through several pretty major changes in resource flow over the course of early access, and in the last few versions they've really nailed the core gunplay and combat feel. Shooting is satisfying, dodging can be demanding, and there's a wide variety of weaponry with several classes and upgrade setups.

If I had to pick a close comparison, I'd say it's a pretty good distillation of a Destiny-style RPG-FPS into a roguelite shooter-FPS, and that's intended as a compliment.

Love this game!
I'm a huge fan of Borderlands, Gunfire reborn and Risk of rain, elements of which this game seems to be able to combine together for a nice FPS Rogue-like experience!
Some of the highlights so far:
- Guns feel good and fun to use
- Large variety of guns
- Nice maps which offer good amount of verticality
- Neat perks which build on top of each other for different builds
- Soundtrack bops

This game combines the gun feel of borderlands, action and speed of Risk of Rain 2 and structure of Gunfire Reborn.

Roboquest is a very promising project in my eyes and I cannot suggest it enough if you are on the lookout for a new FPS Rogue-like.

I had added this to my wishlist like, a year ago maybe?
I had saw it on a video of roguelikes to check out, or maybe it was through steams queue thingy!
But anyways this game is great, ik its sometimes rude to compare but I think of this as a compliment when I say its similar to Gunfire Reborn, it has the same amazing feel with a whole different artstyle, a sick af comic backstory, and I love the comic "pew pews" that pop up when shooting your gun, its enough to see them, but they don't block the screen, and thats so nice.

The more I explore the map, the more i'm excited to see how each area will look in the future! The citys are big, bustling, and fights become chaotic fusterclucks by the end, a mix between "should I jump down there for HP?" or "Should I kill everything first?"
The game heavily HEAVILY relies on you being good, enemies deal much more damage than they can heal you back for, so if you're dying a lot its quite literally a skill issue, and your best bet is to just keep playing till you get good at it.

Some of the upgrades feel a tad lackluster tho, like for instance some of the upgrades are just "heal completely" or one thats a dice roll to get more of the games currency once

I'd give this an 8/10 so far, I really really like it and hope to see it be really fleshed out, seeing the last update was from the 8th of oct. makes me really hype for the future of it :3c

I am incredibly impressed with this game. Any fans of FPS games with good movement mechanics, co-op shooters, or Doom should buy this game.

Every mechanic the player has at his disposal was made with deliberate care in order to make you have a lot of fun and feel powerful:

The guns feel great to use, especially when you find them with alt fire modes. They've got stats alá borderlands, but they are stats that actually make a difference. The weapon types are really well executed and all of them are fun to use. You've also got infinite ammo, and your guns automatically reload over time when unequipped. Your melee attack has a very short cooldown, and depending on your class and upgrades, can feel incredibly impactful.

You can powerslide in any direction. If you jump out of a powerslide you gain speed, if you crouch while in a jump close to the ground, you enter a slide again, and keep your momentum. You chain these together and you end up going really fast.

The game does away with annoying roguelike/roguelite conventions, and takes only the best parts from the genre. You're not scrounging around desperately for health pickups because you accidentally took a little damage. You never feel like you had a terrible run because of RNG. The upgrades are incredibly good. They aren't like those worthless ubisoft-style '+2,5% more fire damage when underwater' upgrades. When you get a good synergy going, it feels like a roguelike god-run.

The enemies are varied, and have their own quirks and attacks you need to learn. There is a good variety of bosses to fight, all of which feel unique and are fun to fight. Some of the fights you can make significantly easier if you experiment a little. All of them drop healing orbs when they die (more drop if you melee them to death), which promotes an aggressive, but deliberate playstyle. You notice that as you get better you leave fights with more HP than you had when you entered.

The co-op worked flawlessly for me. No hiccups, no problems.

All in all, a 9/10 for me.

The game seems fun and all, but it seems the engine itself is holding the game back.

What's the point of an FPS where strafing causes the game to bug out? It's infuriating when your gun stops shooting as soon as you strafe or swap weapons or what other things might trigger this. From what I've read it's been an on-going issue since 2021. The fact that it hasn't been fixed, although it seems to be on UE and not the developer, is seriously off-putting and is currently the sole reason I do not wish to play any longer.

I would recommend this game to play when you are bored but i have been having an issue with fps imbalanced and fps drops recently. I updated the game and it started to stutter here and there, almost unplayable in some areas. I don't know what happened, i tried to search any fixes but to no avail. Overall before the issues, I played this game for hours on end. I would turn off my brain and blast music while playing the game and the enemies and bosses were fun to jump on top of. I wish there was a fix to the issue so that i could keep playing the game.

"Promising, But Needs Work"

I've got a lot of strong opinions about Roboquest-- And I want to make it clear that the game isn't 'bad', per se, but some kinds of players won't really enjoy it like I did. Where some games have a level of depth and challenge in them, Roboquest is really that ultimate stereotype of "run and shoot at the bad guys". It's very limited, it isn't very deep, and hasn't held my interest too well.

So much of the in-game design elements feel contradictory, and ultimately feel far more punishing than they are rewarding. I'll elaborate on some of my main issues with the game;

The Health System
The health system is on the right track with making some good progress on where it should be, as it stands, there are two types of damage you can receive: Scratch Damage and Hard Damage. Scratch Damage is recently received damage that can be healed quickly. Hard Damage is more damaging wounds that take longer to heal.

Health is restored by defeating enemies who drop green health orbs. This is all pretty basic stuff, but the problem that lies is that EVERY enemy is a shooting enemy. There are no melee characters or fast moving or rushing characters, they all shoot. This makes moving towards a recently killed enemy to recover more health incredibly punishing since you have to fight through the fray in order to get to them. Melee attacks and headjumps prove themselves almost less than useless since you just lose health to regain it.

The Guns
It's pretty clear that the guns took emphasis over any other element in the game. There are almost too many I would say, disproportionate to the amount of levels and enemy varietals there are. Most of them as well are completely pointless, where Hitscan weapons are always going to pose more useful than projectiles, since projectiles move too slowly or have way too small AOE to do anything useful.

The game also has a goofy progression system with the guns, where you can choose to level up guns to have better stats-- but better guns often just drop as you go, so leveling them up has little to no use. That or you start runs with a poor weapon and the dropped ones are always better.

Alongside this, just about all weapons reload incredibly fast and have such good output (even with me playing on Heroes, the hardest difficulty I could play as) that they work throughout all of the entirety of the game. I hardly ever use a secondary weapon because my primary is always good. The maps aren't large enough to warrant a Sniper Rifle, or Complex enough to warrant an Assault Rifle. So if I find a Shotgun or SMG, I'm set for the entire game.

The Enemies
I mentioned it earlier, but every enemy is a shooting enemy. Not just that, but they're all medium to lightweight enemies, or a turret. There are hardly any melee enemies or heavyweight enemies that they all just blend in together. And some of the enemies just have some of the most annoying moves that just slow the gameplay flow. Tethers, Stunlocks, and Spike Damage are just about everywhere with enemies.

The Movement
When the game says "Fast-Paced" It isn't referring to movement, but more in how the game goes along. Everything slows your character down. A quarter of the arsenal applies a 25% movement slow, your character moves slow as is, jumping slows you, railgrinding slows you, groundsliding slows you, everything feels that it makes an effective deterrent by slowing you down. There's next to no proper movement skills or anything to make it feel like I do anything. In most engagements, strafing and shooting gets me through.

The Progression
Probably the more broader but bigger issue, but the Progression in this isn't good. Where other games are focusing on making you more powerful and introducing equally powerful enemies to match, every upgrade and power has a negative effect to balance it. Making multiple levels just have your character have a really strong power in one regard, but incredibly weak in another. You always have a weakness.

Since there are so few enemy types, the game doesn't send more powerful enemies to fight you, instead it just sends more grunt enemies instead. So your first encounter will have 5 enemies in it, and three levels later will have 30. They're the same enemies, there is just more of them. It feels lazy and bland.

Five hours into play, I've already discovered just about all the secrets, unlocked all the classes, found all the weapons, and played just about all there is to play. For a Roguelite, it's hardly replayable and doesn't really keep you in for that long. And for a game that has been out for 2 years already, content progression feels very minimal and don't offer really anything.

TL;DR

As it stands, I don't recommend the game. It's full of nonsensical choices and for a randomized game, every run feels ultimately the same. There are too many guns, with too few classes, and bosses. There are too many enemies, but not enough variety in them. The game needs to make drastic changes if it wants to actually perform and be a relevant Roguelite. Otherwise, it's a good 5 hour experience you won't really play again.

You really dont need to play this game long to see how much the devs care. every action somehow feels really good, especially the guns, or weapons in general i should say. If youre thinking you wanna wait until the game is fully out, id say, dont wait. this game has a lot to it and the gameplay feels equally challenging and fun as all hell. cant wait to play more

9/10. An INSANELY fun time

I've played a lot of good roguelites, from Darkest Dungeon to Risk of Rain, Hades to Enter the Gungeon. This is already by far among my favorite roguelites, and it's still only in EA. It's actually incredibly complicated, with a very high skill curve.

So that's the TL;DR part, for more details, I'll continue below.

Guns

The guns in this game are extremely diverse, and each one feels unique and has it's own character. Each gun has it's own style that it wants to be played, and playing the guns the way they like feels satisfying, and rewarding. You've got

    • Mag-fed guns, like pistols, rifles, SMG's, and shotguns
    • Energy-based guns, like several types of plasma/laser cannons, plasma/laser type rifles, stuff like this
    • and weapons that don't really have a type of source for ammo, like a bow, throwing knives, crossbows, etc.

Each of these guns can have a variety of special effects that can completely change the way they are played, the quality of the gun will determine what kinds of enhancements (called "affixes" in-game) can be applied (at random), though some guns have properties guaranteed to be on them.

Classes

There are currently 4 classes in Roboquest, and to my surprise, and much satisfaction, each of them are totally unique to playing in different styles. You have the main tank class of the Guardian, THE premier damage class of the Commando, Recon, the stealth based class, and Engineer, the definition of "war of attrition". Each of them plays drastically different, and each of their unique level-up bonuses makes them play the game drastically different. But the key takeaway is that each style I've played of them, is all FUN. I've never sat there wondering how to do this, or why doesn't this just work for me. All of the classes knows what they want to be and doesn't do anything else that contradicts what they are and the better you get at the game, the more efficient you'll get at clearing the maps and the more satisfying it feels to get thrown into utter chaos, knowing you got it.

Enemies/Bosses

I'll cover a little more about these on my Nitpicks/Change/Balance Wishlist towards the bottom, but rest assured, you won't really be disappointed. There are probably some 30 or so enemies in the game currently, with more on the way with the Autumn 2022 planned update. And there are 6 bosses. Each enemy actually fights differently, causing the player to think on their toes and take down the enemies that are the most problematic first, taking out the lesser issues later. Each boss is different and feels unique to fight against. I've never felt that the bosses were just CopyPasta'd together for "content". It all felt planned, well thought out, and creative.

Final Thoughts

I've played Roboquest now for almost 23 hours, and as long as more content is coming, I foresee myself playing even more to come. The game is FUN, and that's what counts. The devs here have made a quality game and I just wish there was more content.

Nitpicks and Changes Wishlist (WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD)

(Oh, and as these are nitpicks and some changes I'd like, I don't really count them against the overall rating.)

    • Dr. Turret, one of the bosses of Area 1, seems a little overpowered for what you're most commonly equipped with. At least if you're not playing as the Guardian and can just shield the mortar strikes he does. It seems to track the player a little too well and the fact that he blocks off about 1/3 of the arena you fight him in with the flames makes this just a little bit of a headache. Either reduce the amount of the arena he covers in his fire DoT, or make the mortars hit the ground a little slower.
    • In Haven City and Corrupted Haven City, I'm fine with the way you beat the maps, by clearing objectives or killing mini-bosses, but I wouldn't mind there being indicators of where to go next. If you hold TAB, you already see where the mini-bosses are and in Corrupted Haven City, there's literally only one way to go, but it's just strange to me why there aren't arrows on the HUD showing where they are so you're not running around with the big map overhead. I've probably wasted like 45 minutes on my first time there just trying to find the next mini-boss.
    • The stunned mechanics is just frustrating. I can understand it being this difficult if it was hard to get stunned but the enemies that do stun, like the generator looking enemy in Oasis and the small purple bots you find from the Power Plant onwards, have INCREDIBLE tracking abilities, like INSANELY good tracking. It's some of the craziest tracking in games I've ever seen, they somehow know how to track me trying to dodge their stun attacks. If it just built up a meter that went away outside of combat, where say two of those attacks will stun you, it wouldn't feel as punishing. That stun mechanic is literally why I NEVER go to the Oasis area. EVER. I'll usually go to the Ruins. "
    • Lastly, I would really like there to be more damage variety for Commando. The only big damage increases he gets are for his primary ability (the rocket launcher) and his melee attack (which is a shotgun), when his class wants to be using close range, bursty type weapons but strangely enough, his class upgrades just doesn't care about the guns you find much.

DocMcStuffin
DocMcStuffin

A solid roguelite that you can put 40 to 60 minutes into per run.

Movement is solid, fast, and feels good. Double jumps add additional mobility and some forgiveness. Also, you can goomba stomp, but it doesn't do much damage.

The healing mechanic is fantastic. You heal by collecting green orbs dropped from fallen enemies, but they disappear pretty quickly. So, you have to balance collecting them versus the risk of taking damage.

Enemy design and level design is both colorful and distinct. Enemy difficulty ramps with more shots, higher accuracy, and more unique weapons. For the most part, it all feels manageable to the player.

The weapon choices per run are mostly good. Sometimes you get lucky with a good one, sometimes you get junk. The developer has struck a nice balance by letting you upgrade a weapon to a higher level. So, you're not entirely a victim of the RNG.

Most of the bosses are challenging yet satisfying.

It does require multiple runs to level up your base, gun choices, and character bonuses (I guess you'd call them bonuses).

Overall, there's a lot things the developer absolutely nails, creating solid and satisfying gameplay.

Man, let me tell you, this game makes me feel like gaming still has a future. It makes me feel like I'm good at video games again. All it needs now is more raw content, but when the raw, core gameplay is this good, it's going to be a breeze.

Pretty fun and charming game. It's an fps roguelite but with some bullet hell dna. The game is pretty hard though imo but the latest updates as of writing this made it a bit more fun. It's currently a bit unfinished but i would say give it some time, rn you should perhaps wait for a sale. Still, pretty fun and has a lot of potential!

This game is pure fun with solid gun mechanics from which AAA titles should take lessons. Despite being in early access with mechanics changing all of the time, this game is worth getting and playing with a friend (2 player co-op max). I just checked off the highest difficulty as of right now (Hero+6) and look forward to more challenges in the future. My only complaint is that I cannot play with more friends at the same time (although I know it's not possible given the current maps).

Amazing visual style and gameplay mechanics are extremely fun. Already beat the Heroes difficulty with a Rank A, but definitely going to go back and get a way better time (I was slow checking all the nooks and crannies lol). Time really flies because you're just so engaged in this game in an amazing way, it reminds me of when I was younger and I could truly, genuinely, unconditionally enjoy games. Now, it's a bit hard due to external stressors, but I could see myself picking this game up on my lunchbreaks WFH or something.

Pros:
+ Cute music, fits the levels
+ Cutscenes are very interesting and provide backstory, love the style!!
+ Likable characters, dialogue is not the main focus which I like. Because obviously I just wanna loot n shoot!
+ Interesting enough backstory, although it doesn't affect much of the gameplay other than provides context for who you're meeting
+ Weapons are all very fun, great variety (from crossbows to auto shotties to rocket launchers to flare guns!)
+ Vendors are very simple to understand
+ RNG element keeps it interesting and provides very high replay value!
+ Levels are designed pretty well, although I would always like to see more speedy rails or other fun boosters :)
+ When you pause, the game pauses with you! Not all games do this, and I'm sure a lot of people care about keeping their amazing run while they go do other things.
+ Enemies are highly visible against the environment
+ Visual style with the comic, the comic-style onomatopoeia, the outlines on characters, the flat coloring... it's all amazing and refreshing versus a lot of the "realistic" shooters that are out lately. PLUS, for those who do NOT like all that stuff flying around everywhere, you can customize reticle, damage numbers, how and where the damage numbers show up, and you can even toggle the onomatopoeia off if you want. There is also colorblind/accessibility options if you please.
+ Weapons reload after a short time in your holster! Love it. Really adds to the fast-paced, arena-shooter type gameplay. Also love that there's a visual on the reloading in the weapon icon frame in the corner. (However... please see con about this)
+ Multiplayer already available! I know you can currently co-op in the story, so it's PvE coop, but I haven't checked it out in full yet. Will update my review if there are additional multiplayer modes I am currently unaware of. But I wanted to get this review out ASAP because of how amazing this game is! Seriously.

Cons:
- Not finished developing! Need more levels!!!! :)
- Wish there were more gadgets to pick from. Most of them I don't even find mildly useful, such as crouching to reload then mega-jump. This game feels very arena-shooter-type and crouching is the last thing you'd want to do in such a tight, action-packed space (especially in later levels). Plus, there's jump pads to get an extra jump boost. That's just one example, so I'd love to see some more options!
- Wish the upgrades for your basecamp were a little more interesting? Maybe instead of a 1-path upgrade system for each module, perhaps each one is a tree? That *might* make the game a little less appealing to beginners, but it could even be an offensive tree vs defensive tree, or DoT tree or something. This game would be a great way to introduce beginners to the future complexities of FPSs, movement shooters, arena style games, etc. etc. And because ~Ikea Effect~, choosing your own path is always fun and can help people stay engaged!
- Speed rails are a little hard to get onto? The level of clearance you need to have above the rail feels just a hair too high, but maybe that's just because I'm not used to being such a tall character? Just a personal con, might not be a hassle to everyone
- Only mildly challenging on "Heroes" (hardest) difficulty as an FPS vet, so I wish it was actually difficult, or there are additional unlockable difficulties. I think upon completing Heroes, I unlocked a harder difficulty? But I will update my review of this game if I find that it is actually hard/if there's more past even that unlocked level. EDIT 9/12: So, upon completing "Heroes", I unlocked "Heroes +2", beat that, then unlocked "Heroes +3". Looks like it just keeps going up, though not sure if there's eventually a cap. BUT, it looks like checking out the "Heroes" description that it is an additional TEMPORARY challenge for Early Access. Not sure what that means once it's developed further, if it will be replaced or completely removed. Hope it's replaced by harder difficulties/progressively harder difficulties.
- Not necessarily a con, but kinda weird: By default, F is bound to drop your weapon in your hands? Kind of weird, especially because it's so close to the movement keys that I have accidentally hit it twice now mid-firefight. I ended up unbinding "Drop Weapon" and instead putting F as cycling to previous weapon.
- So, it is told in a gameplay tip on the (very short) loading screens that weapons reload in your holster. Very cool! I wrote a Pro about that. HOWEVER, I wish it was in the tutorial instead of lurking on a loading screen! It completely changed my gameplay, so thankfully I saw it towards the beginning of my journey so that I can adjust and fight more effectively. Or, put it on both the loading screen AND the tutorial! I just feel like it takes a backseat for no reason, because it's an amazing feature you don't see that often as a default. Usually it's an add-on or perk or modification to a weapon instead.

Personal notes:
I love this game to bits. I've been telling everyone I know about it, and even suggesting it to my friends who aren't super comfortable playing FPS's but want a fun, casual way to get into them. I love that there's 4 different levels of difficulty at the moment, which makes it great for beginners. The Discovery mode (easiest) is geared towards those who maybe aren't FPS veterans and want to focus more on traversing the map and enjoying the level design. While the Heroes difficulty (Hardest) is decently challenging, I would like to see more difficult modes, maybe other gamemodes even? (But please not another battle royale lol, I'm thinking TDM or CTF or even KotH!)

I would recommend this game to absolutely everyone if they asked me what game they should pick up. Plus, for the price, this really feels like a steal!

After this new Summer update, I can definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes roguelike FPS games. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and having tons of fun with the gameplay. really fun, up to hero +6 difficulty and completely maxed except for the wrench converter upgrade that costs an absurd 600 wrenches.. even if i have a ton of power cells, there are only so many places to spend them. i consistently reach the last boss with a lot of excess power cells already

First things first... does the music in a main menu need to go this hard? In my opinion, absolutely not. But. Do I like the fact that it does? Freaking yes! It does set pretty high expectations for the rest of the soundtrack, but that goes even harder which to me is ridiculously good.

So now that I've got my gushing about the music out of the way, let's get to the game proper.

If you'd tell me this was not an early access game I'd believe you without a doubt. The gameplay is so smooth, the action just flows, the controls are so responsive (I'm personally missing a dash move though) and the gunplay feels immaculate. The amount of weapons and stats for them is also amazing and, at least to me, gives a ton of incentive to keep doing more runs to experience everything that is available.

There is a bit of a learning curve but nothing so far has felt unfair or undoable. Just takes some learning. The better you are at fast paced shooters the easier time you'll have, obviously.

The perks could probably use some more additions to enable even more varied builds, but even the current situation is already decent at the very minimum.

On the technical side of things the game so far has been rock solid for me and my friend. Zero crashes, zero glitches, runs smooth and no problems with multiplayer. Would like to be able co-op with more than one friend at a time though.

Overall to me this game is well worth the money I paid for it, and I can't wait to see where the developers take it in the future.

This game is amazing for an early alpha. I've beaten as far as you can go currently on standard level and i gotta say for what little there is, it already has seemingly limitless replay-ability. It is an Arena-looter shooter with rouge-like qualities and because of that it pushes the boundries of all of those genre simply by combining them. Not to mention it wraps it all up in a neat little bow by givng it a fun comic book feel and an amazing soundtrack. Props to Noisecream for the bumping beats to bonk bots to. Best words to describe would be unfun and boring. My biggest deception amongst all the Roguelite FPS I tried.
Gameplay is just mindlessly shooting in the general direction of generic ennemies with a generic weapon mashing your generic class ability key, after a while you just wait for the end of the run mechanically playing the game.

The way life works forces you to play distance and not commit, there is nothing pushing the player to play fast, its Half-Life more than Doom Eternal, shoot, hide, reload, shoot, and there is like 3 different types of ennemies, in always the same rooms, so its just a chore, and the "Fast paced FPS" thingy is a LIE, there is not even a pace.

Go and check Gunfire Reborn if the concept of a Fast-FPS-Roguelite with a Borderlands style cell shading and abilities seems promising to you, but dont expect it to be done well here in Roboquest, the devs dont know where they want to go and it shows, the game has been reworked X times already, yet it still goes nowhere and has no content.

Never have I seen a game completely revamp all of its system so many times. Go ahead, read this game's patch notes. It's truly amazing to see a team of devs so ready to accept that some core systems of their game just aren't that great, and to take the time to revamp them and make sure that they're the best they can be.
I still haven't played this game all that much all things considered (although considering that the runs are very short, 5 hours does mean quite a lot of runs), but every time I boot it back up I'm impressed by how much better the game is compared to the last time. Admittedly, this does mean that the amount of content present in the game isn't increasing all that fast compared to some other EA titles, but I'd definitely take this over any game that rushes out to the finish line and never takes the time to actually make sure that all of their systems are good, fun and balanced.
Good job to the dev team on this game. It's one heck of a roguelite shooter!

Take Doom 2016, give it the Borderlands guns and look, the gameplay loop of a roguelike and you have this absolutely fantastic FPS. I cannot recommend it enough, and its not even finished yet.

good game, can be very annoying to head somewhere expecting something but then find its still being built but when it does release i have high hopes for this game

Picked this up a day or so ago and it's already become one of my favourite games.

A great mix of Borderlands gun mechanics with Doom-like movement and combat tied together with fair and natural progression, even in its unfinished state the content here is well-worth the money.

Very fun , nice flow of gameplay . It feels very rewarding during the frags and upgrades. Took some time away from the game. I came back , and was shocked how much this dev has done since my last play. Impressive

Bought this game on somewhat of a whim when I saw it on sale, and it seemed to be right up my alley.

Boy was I right!

I love roguelikes, and FPS roguelikes especially and this game really satisfies my craving. Tight, snappy controls, excellent guns, fast combat, interesting and varied abilities, plenty of content...everything you could want from a game like this, really.

As of right now, you can't even save your progress, which means that either when you die, or when you leave and come back to play later again, you will start RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING. What's the point?!?!?!? Don't make a game look promising and good if you can't even add basic features like saving and loading.

Until they come with a saving feature, I won't recommend this game, and if it never comes, I want a refund.

***WATCH YOUR CPU TEMPS***
***VERY CPU HEAVY***

I have a Ryzen 5-2600.

Great game but watch the CPU temps. I kept black screening and didn't know why. Entire system would shut down except for the tower. I tried everything from drivers, back ups, system restore, and eventually a full system wipe of my entire PC fearing corrupted files or worse. Was 2 days of pain with less then 10 hours into the game. Eventually through DE-BUG lights and research I realized my CPU was running at 95 C while in the game. It pointed out a flaw in my case where I did not have optimal air flow and am currently fixing it. Will play more once case is upgraded!

This game is that fun that even after doing a full system wipe and a case upgrade....just to play this game. If your system doesn't do well with CS:GO or Valorant. Set settings to low.

Don't let the art style and cutesy robots fool you. This is a fantastic shooter with very satisfying and kinetic combat that harkens back to classics such as Quake, Doom and Unreal Tournament. Every gun feels unique and just so damn gratifying when you start blasting away swarms of enemies especially in the later stages of a run.

And the soundtrack by Noisecream? Just sublime! It gets your blood pumping even before you enter the combat portions of the game. Kudos to the artist!

They just recently updated it with much needed reworks and added a lot of new content too. It's honestly one of my favorite first person shooters that i have played in recent years. I am looking at you, Doom Eternal! No weapon juggling or ammo micromanaging in this. No jungle gyms either. In fact, every one of your guns has unlimited ammo. None of that aforementioned nonsense. Just great gameplay!

That's right! Unlimited ammo! Shoost away at your heart's content!

So you mean to tell me my favorite part of the borderlands franchise which is running around like a madman shooting guns nonstop is now combined with a lack of modern garbage writing made by spiteful losers and ear drilling voice acting, AND combined with the ability to jump around the environment with strong Doom vibes?

Sign me up....Wait.....is THAT a minigun that freezes enemy robots? But my bullets already light people on fire....I can light them on fire WHILE they are frozen? Say no more

As of the summer update, steady progress is being made through basecamp expansion and new mechs. Quickplay matchmaking was a great addition, feels great to play in co-op (although bosses seem somewhat easier compared to SP). Roadmap looks promising with more content to come before release. This is one to look out for when it launches!

This is extremely fun and addicting. Like a 3D version of Shoot Many Robots. Many different ways to play the game depending on your style. I recommend try everything no matter how stupid it looks or sounds, especially guns.

great game, fun and challenging gameplay that will make you feel like you're playing Doom. Great progression of difficulty where you don't get instagibbed and mistakes are usually how you die. Looking forward to future content!

Fun DOOM style gameplay, with Borderlands loot style, mixed with a rogue-like progression. Similar to Gunfire Reborn. I am experienced with rogue-like shooters, so it is maybe too easy. But there are higher difficulties and it looks like the devs are active and will be expanding it. It was very worth the ~$13 I paid.

Its too early but I like it a lot! Give it a try.

While the game isn't done yet, the core game play loop is extremely polished and satisfying. The team who made this clearly knows how to make a good rogue-lite shooter, and there is enough polish, levels, weapons, abilities, and variety here to recommend it even during early access.

If you like boomer shooters, the quick pace, satisfying and diverse weaponry, and interesting abilities are synergize very well.

The rogue-lite elements also work very well, providing a satisfying upgrades that also don't completely nerf earlier levels. Instead of boosting health or other upgrades which can quickly make early levels a slog, the upgrade elements instead boost the chance of receiving better quality loot during a run.

Finally, while the levels are clearly procedurally generated, the different pieces all fit together very well, and each mini-arena has enough shortcuts, rail grinds, and verticality to keep the pace fast and fun. The later levels are sprawling interconnected mazes crisscrossed with rails and jump pads.

I look forward to where this game is headed.

This might be my new favorite game. This game looks and feel great, its hard to believe its still just in early access. There are sometimes connection issues when playing multiplayer but other than that I have very little to critique. 9.9/10

pls add a sledgehammer or mallet :)
fists & revolver are my favorite and the replayability is fun.
original base is ok. (super bland area/doesn't really matter though)
base upgrades are ok.

It is a little lacking.
I want more chaos/more stacks, it's a little too easy and it lacks in roguelike features compared to others in the same genre. I do enjoy the game though.

Visuals are charming,
the soundtrack is good,
weapon variety is fun.

pls keep updating and keep a fast pace.

This game is still in its early stages, but I personally think its a hidden gem that definitely needs more attention than it currently has. I have no regrets with my purchase, solid 9/10 imo.
