Great Steamdeck game!

Gibbing unique mobs with unique weapon counters (Doom) + flow state skating to refill your ammo (SSX Tricky, Tony Hawk) = A great loop thats gets better as YOU get better.

Once you understand the maps and the moves, it can be poetry in motion as you posterize mobs with your flashy moves that at the same time refill your ammo.

Easy to get into, but not an easy game. The game is fair and not punishing. A best of all, the rounds are quick which lends itself to in and out play.

This game is insanely good. Brush off your old Tony Hawk's skills, add bullet time and guns? Delivers with incredible style and mood.

Rollerdrome has tight, focused game design at every level, from the incredibly responsive, innovative controls to the beautiful art direction, which is a masterpiece of minimalist but evocative worldbuilding. An absolutely terrific, stylish, and deeply satisfying action game with a wonderful vibe through and through, and easily one fo the best indie games of the year.

Very straightforward control scheme; paired with the battle-chess gameplay format (where kills give you ammo) you are _always_ on the move and its always rewarding. Excellent!

This game is really fun, play with a gamepad. Not too hard to get the platinum for either.

I do wish you could customize your character or choose between different characters though, I think if there was options for maybe tankier or speedier play-styles. Similar to Tony Hawk or Jet Set radio. They even have a perfect setup because the story involves other characters that you never see who are participating in the tournament. Make them unlockable maybe...

But yeah this game rules. Definitely worth 30 dollars imo

Easily one of the most fluid, fast and fun games I've ever played. It's like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater meets Doom

What a great and addictive game. I love the shade cell style of the game and the music, physics, and gameplay are all fantastic. Runs great on Steam Deck. What else is there to know? Go ahead and buy now.

The game feels amazing to play! You really get into that skating game flow of: Pick a line, refine it, master it and then you mess up one jump and screw up your combo :D Its fast, action-heavy and always keeps you on your toes. If it's too tough for you, there's a great assistmode menu to tone it down a little bit.

Plenty of fun challenges to keep you playing for a while! Awesome soundtrack

Really invokes the nostalgic arcade like feel of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series.. but then ramps everything up to 10 by blending in action packed shooting sequences. Once you get into your groove with this game it's really quite something.

This game slaps.

It's like a far more intense JSRF multiplayer arena experience.
It's fast, there's a lot going on and it's challenging.

This game is well worth it if you like frenetic games.

Amazing game, finally a fast paced fun game that doesn't rely on boost jumping and wall running.

Price is a bit high in my opinion for what you get, but 100% worth getting on sale

Really Really Cool. Plays well, looks good, is fun. Its an arena shooter with a rollerskating gimmick, quick to pick up, but deep enough to keep you trying to do better.

This game is one of if not the most unique games ever. It puts Max Payne, Tony Hawk's pro skater, and comic books into a game and it is one of the most fun experiences I've had in a while. You even have to do tricks in order to reload. The price is dirt cheap for if you compare it to the game. This game is worth 60 dollars and they sell it for 30 dollars (it's 20 dollars at the time of writing.) Keep in mind this game is kind of difficult, so if you're a casual gamer I wouldn't recommend. If you like what you read but you won't take my word for it read other positive review (the negative reviews are people complaining about the difficulty and the controls.)

Fun game. You skate and trying to complete challenges with each level. Once you complete said amount of challenges, you unlock harder levels and so on. The skating is fun, the shooting is fun, and doing them both at the same time makes for a great experience. The difficulty ramps up quick so be prepared for that but it didn't hinder my enjoyment in anyway. I do wish however there were more tricks you can do.

played for a few minutes and really love the idea and concepts presented but the execution is lacking imo, would play more if the trick system didnt feel so clunky and sluggish for a game based around the trick system, and the overall skating movement doesnt feel as satisfying as games that are directly like it like roller champions as flawed as that game is. would 100% recommend if the movement gets tweaked a little bit and becomes more momentum based

Note: I have completed the Main Campaign, the recorded playtime may be inaccurate due to playing partially on the Steam Deck.

Rollerdrome is closer in style to Vanquish on the God Hard difficulty setting than it is to the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series. The game values memorization, optimization, and execution much more than it does creativity and improvisation. It's quite difficult, and the input for more advanced moves requires a precision that I couldn't achieve on controller after a few hours of playtime. This would likely fare better on Keyboard and Mouse.

That being said, it's a clever, well put together game and the core gameplay is very fun for what it is, just don't go in expecting the next coming of Jet Set Radio or something.

Works perfectly on the Steam Deck, aside from small text.

Love Tony Hawk? Love shooting stuff? This is the perfect marriage between the two and manages to be just that without any noticeable glitches or hiccups. The combat and skating both feel smooth, responsive, and fun. Although, there is little else going for the game, the arcade styled approach suits the core gameplay loop very well and allows for quite a bit of replayability. Easily worth the $20 I spent while it was on sale

This game embodies everything that makes one say "yes."

The style. The soundtrack. The shooting. The dodging. The slow-mo. All of it. Just yes.

I don't know of any other game where the animated trailer is exactly the same as what the gameplay is actually like and feels like.

Movement and tricks are inconsequential to get right and while that may seem to be a downside at first, it really lets you focus on what matters: Taking down enemies and feeling cool while doing it. Each level must be played at a consistent focus level to succeed, so if you start to slip up, you get eliminated. So once you finally get rid that final enemy, it's a very satisfying feeling.

Combat takes on a plan and execute vibe where you have to time your tricks and position with longer range enemy attacks. This happens constantly because the level design and enemy placement is ever so slightly different for each interaction. As a result, there are no dull moments.

SuccHunter

A short but amazing game. Indie studios just keep delivering Ws in an era where triple A studios takes Ls up the ass like Yagami Light in a Death Note fanfic.

Pros:
+The premise is already pretty awesome. You have a pair of roller skates and some guns. You roll into an arena full of people hired specifically to kill contestants like you in as many ways as they can. You will dodge sniper bullets, mines, rockets, laser beams, pools of acid, and everything else under the sun as you try to kill everyone before they can kill you. Yes, it is just as frantic, chaotic and breakneck as it sounds. This game is the patron saint of the "think fast" school of game design, and you're gonna be mopping up buckets of sweat after each session with it.

+Gameplay is extremely fluid and tight. This game is a textbook example of good game design. Not only is the movement fast and responsive, the shooting is also very snappy and satisfying. The shooting and roller skating are intrinsically linked together, as you need to perform tricks to get more bullets to keep shooting. Although this takes some getting used to at first, soon you'll be flying through the air doing flips and emptying entire clips into the enemies. The devs really polished the core gameplay loop to a mirror sheen, with no real flaws or complaints I can point out.

+The story is somewhat barebones. This is a definitely a game where the gameplay was conceived first, and then the story was written around it to establish the bare minimum context for the gameplay. I think this is a good thing, because it allows Rollerdrome to focus mainly on its gameplay loop, which is the best thing it has going for it. The game sprinkles just enough story here and there so that you'll understand the setting, the backstory and personality of the main character, the stakes, and why she's participating in a blood sport. I like this approach to storytelling; it's not overbearing or intrusive upon the gameplay when it's not that necessary or not that good, which is a mistake I've seen many other indie games make. Rollerdrome knows exactly what it wants to be, and it doesn't try to overreach in the story department.

Cons:
-If I had to nitpick something, I'd say the way you unlock new levels kinda suck: you need to do challenges for previous levels that force you to play a certain way, which is kinda annoying in a game that encourages you to "think fast" and spontaneously do shit on the fly. The game grinds to a halt when you haven't completed enough of these challenges in the previous levels, so you have to go back and grind them for a bit to unlock new levels. However, there are some upsides to this: it's pretty fun to revisit the earlier levels of the game that gave you trouble before and absolutely style on them. It's an extremely satisfying feeling to see how much you've improved and mastered the game's mechanics, and these things no longer pose any challenge to you. Secondly, the challenges are pretty forgiving as to how you unlock them. After you've completed a challenge, you can simply exit the level and it will still remain completed. You can simply get into a level to complete that specific challenge then peace out, so at the end of the day, grinding for them is not too bad.

-Maps get reused towards the end of the game. However, the game does change them up a bit and make them feel just "new" enough to be a new level, albeit being the same map. Rollerdrome is an indie game anyways so I'll let this pass. It's actually pretty cool to see how much mileage they got out of 4 or 5 maps total throughout the entire game.

Verdict: 9.5/10

Some small nitpicks aside, Rollerdrome might very well be a perfect indie game. It's fast, fun, and extremely well designed. It might take some getting used to at first, but by 2-3 hours in, you'll no longer be struggling with the game; you'll be styling on it and doing some of the coolest shit you've done in a video game in a long time. This is the kind of shit that you saw in action movies as a kid and thought "damn I wish I could do that too." Well, buy Rollerdrome then. It's probably one of the best indie games this year.

I was just thinking about how much I want a game that's easy to get in and replay when I want to just sit and play something. Came across this game looking through the sales on steam and I'm more than pleased. gameplay is easy to learn and fun to master, soundtrack is nice and the style is cool. Nothing like dodging 4 consecutive missiles and placing a slug in those pesky snipers.

Incredible 11/10 game. Beyond perfect gameplay and aesthetic execution. I imagine I'll keep coming back to this as it's very satisfying to replay the levels and to push my scores higher.

I **STRONGLY** recommend ignoring the game's recommendations and playing with mouse and keyboard. I put dodge on my thumb button and never looked back.

There may be some state of the art techniques that I can't execute with M+KB but at the time of this review I'm in the global top 10 on a few of the levels so I would say that for most intents and purposes this game is very playable with mouse and keyboard.

This game is fun as heck! The enemy variety and difficulty does indeed level up, but so does your arsenal. Following the challenges also makes for improvement even if they can be grindy. "Defeat an enemy with two weapon types before the shield deploys" is posed initially as a challenge, but really the game is telling you that enemy's weakness.

The graphics are crisp and makes the game extremely approachable and fluid even on oldish hardware (7500, 1660 S, I'm getting >144 Hz EASY). The controls admittedly do take some getting used to, but that's to be expected when playing something that balances Tony Hawk and Max Payne. Soundtrack is excellent -- I mute most soundtracks when I game and opt for my own but I couldn't put a better vibe to it if I tried, personally.

This is genuinely some of the most fun I've had in a videogame.
Getting a perfect dodge and then getting Super Reflex mode is one of the most satisfying feelings I've had in a game.
Doing tricks to reload is an interesting concept and I think it's handled beautifully here, as you can do a trick, dodge, enter reflex mode, and then shoot your target.

Extremely satisfying gameplay, I wish more people would cover it.

First of all look to other reviews that actually talk about this game, and it's gameplay - I am here to gush about my purchase. Secondly this game should be a requirement before the word "Game" can be added to one's vocabulary. Roilerdrome is awesome in every regard. As soon as I saw other reviewers liken this to stylistic shooters such as "Wet", and "Max Payne" I immediately purchased. No regrets here.

I bought this on launch discount of 19.99, but I am telling you now I wouldn't have hesitated for an instant at full price. This title is that good. I feel that everything done in Rollerdrome is completely original, fun, and respects the players time.

I give it 13 out of 5 stars. Yep you read that right!

I didn't play for long but I like it already. Some say the longer you play the more repetitive it gets - well I play a lot of different games so it won't matter to me. Dope art style, smooth controls, genius idea. If you want to support great devs, well then here's your opportunity. It's a shame that only so few reviews - hope the thing jumps on a hype train very soon.

Most reviews on here say that Rollerdrome is a mix of Tony Hawk with Max Payne. And considering the game-play is all skate, jump and grind while rocking some insane bullet time shooting, they are not far off the mark.

There isn't too much of a story here, just some light commentary about a dystopian future that can be explored in between levels. The visuals and sound however make up for what the game lacks in narrative. Each level feels unique and is a pleasure to look at due to the rich cell shaded pastel art style. The music in particular does a great job of complementing the 'Running Man' type setting while complementing the intense game-play. And the game-play is where this one shines. If you do love the old skating games, except with no risk of stacking it after trying to pull of a massive move set combo, you'll be happy here. That doesn't mean this is an easy experience though as the gun play will keep you on your toes from start to finish. The overall control scheme and shooting mechanics makes it a dream to plan each combo across the arena, making for a satisfying experience overall.

I think the best way to describe this one is Jetset Radio with guns. And if that sounds appealing to you, then the price is right. Even though it isn't a lengthy game, there is enough challenge and incentive to keep you coming back for plenty of fun.

DBtheWelder
DBtheWelder

Hilariously over-hyped. If you want a game entirely devoid of length, story, progression, smooth mobility, and personality... all while playing a they/them character blasting guns on roller skates for whatever reason... then maybe this is for you. I don't know.

Mondo Duke
Mondo Duke

A weird hybrid of Tony Hawk and Jet Grind Radio with shooting. Hard, but not frustratingly so. The movement system is a little weird at first, but you get used to it and it feels good to do sweet tricks, do a perfect dodge, hit slowmo and kill a guy all the way across the stage. That being said, it can get a little frustrating when the controls aren't working like they should and you start doing a backwards wall-ride. I'd wait till a sale to buy it.

OMGxxBBQ

Played this on Steam Deck and it ran flawlessly. The gameplay is really satisfying. The game does a great job of slowly introducing more mechanics as you progress through the levels so when you replay past levels to finish challenges you will be amazed at how much better you have become at the game.

I have no problem saying this is a 10/10 game.

Got it while it was on sale for $19.79. While a bit short, there still is a fair amount of content. Honestly, it's for a specific type of person, those who like Max Payne bullet time combat, and those who enjoy the Tony Hawk game franchise. The game movement is smooth, responsive, and rewarding for those who are skilled enough to play. The soundtrack is also pretty decent too, story is a little interesting as well. Well done guys :)

This ain't gonna be as easy-going as you might think. The challenge is there. But the controls are tight, the attacks well telegraphed, if there's a mistake, it's probably yours. Rarely have I gotten into a clusterfuck big enough to seem unfair.

So before i go any further, this is a great game, intriguing graphics and fun mix of combat and "tony hawk" style tricks (and great music.)

The reason i'm not recomending this game is that the level progression is locked behind challenges that seem far too difficult (and too large in number requirements) for your average/below average gamer, especially in this specific style of game. I consider myself a "decent" gamer, not good, not bad, but decent. I beat the 4th match, but because i didn't complete enough challenges (and they aren't easy for a casual gamer like me) i was not allowed to progress, despite the fact i did in fact beat the level. Now if this is intentionally a hard game and not for casual gamers, OK, but it would be nice if there was a disclaimer for that. Personally, i think the challenges should unlock new/better gear, new weapons, better armor, skates, perhaps abilities (passive or otherwise.) Things like that, the challenges should be a "secondary" objective to make the game easier as a reward for completing them, not a requirement to progress, beating the level should be the requirement to progress. This way if you are a completionist or you just want better gear, grind out those challenges, if you get stuck on a level and need better gear, grind out those challenges, if you are doing well enough as you are, then just keep beating the levels. I also think the challenges should be more generic, some point oriented ones (get X amount of points per challenge tier,) dodge enemy attacks X amount of times, don't take any damage for the level (this should be in all levels, etc.) Things of that nature, not weapon specific challenges, because what if you don't feel comfortable using that weapon type, or that gear type?

Again, if the game is meant to be geared towards a specific crowd, OK, but otherwise, for the casual player, it's way too hard as it stands, at least as far as I'm concerned. I came here to spend a few hours and play a fun tony hawk style combat game, and it was fun while it lasted. But, for me at least, it got too hard too fast, i'm just not that talented at gaming and i don't have the patience to pour hours into a single level.

What do you get when you combine Tony Hawk's with The Matrix? Rollerdrome.

Buttery smooth gameplay that just feels so damn cool to experience. Nailing that transition between slow motion shooting and scoring tricks is very satisfying.

Campaign itself is short but the levels demand to be replayed. Whether it's to complete challenges, chase a high score or just jump in for a quick session.

The only let down for me were the boss battles — made sense for the campaign story but felt lacking compared to the main gameplay loops.

Much of the quality of Rollerdrome is wrapped up in game feel — you really need to play it for yourself to understand what makes it so good. Would fully recommend.

Lonesome Yogurt

Mark this down as another "I wanted to like it, but..." review - the basic idea is so cool, and the art style is so unique, that I was ready to put this on my Game of the Year list by the time I finished the first level. Unfortunately, the designers decided to lean in *hard* on difficulty over pretty much anything else, and the result is that most levels beyond the first two or three are a tedious slog. Getting to the end of a level isn't impossible, by any means, but doing so requires that you play in a very specific, ultra-defensive style that actively undercuts everything that makes the game fun in the first place.

A huge example of this is the way snipers work. You spend probably 75% of the game, no exaggeration, with a sniper trained on you, waiting for the laser sight to turn white so you can get a perfect dodge. As a result, there's no real way to line up jumps, because you can't commit to *anything* when you're always only a few seconds or two away from having to dodge sideways. Over and over again, I'd have a great jump in view and start heading towards it, only to have a sniper land on me and force me to roll away and lose the opportunity. It's extremely frustrating, and it trains you to never go for anything more than a second or two away. I see a lot of comparisons to Tony Hawk, but this game is the exact opposite when it comes to that feeling of setting up a cool little route across the map; instead, you just learn to head directly towards whatever ramp or half-pipe is closest and pray you can get a little air before another sniper lands on you.

There are a lot of other enemies that throw a wrench into the traversal too - one chases you with a laser beam that leaves a trail of flames wherever it hits, which is *another* example of artificial difficulty that limits where you can and can't go rather than rewarding you for finding fun and novel routes across the map. This whole game is a classic example of a design philosophy that makes having fun and doing well mutually exclusive - over and over again in this game, I found myself thinking, "Well, I *could* do this really cool thing... but my score will be higher if I just turtle up and take potshots at everyone while zipping back and forth across the map in a straight line." I got about halfway, completing all the extra objectives for each map, before just getting tired of it. A huge disappointment, all in all.

Tony Hawk skating and tricks, Max Paine bullet time and sharpshooting, and a brilliantly simple art style, so you can parse everything while moving at 100mph.

Rollardrome is a white-knuckle, uncompromising thrill ride that will make you feel like an absolute god in a way very few games do. With gameplay so above and beyond anything else I continue to play levels I have 100%ed just for more game.

Rollerdrome is a truly excellent game. Don't let any naysayers discourage you. If you want to grind for challenges, you'll really have to push yourself (I just finished the out-for-blood difficulty as of writing this review, and it can be truly brutal at times), but regardless, this game is just pure arcade-style fun. When you perfectly time the dodge with an enemy's attack and get the bonus damage, it literally feels like bullet time from the Matrix. Even just experimenting with the gameplay sandbox by replaying levels is awesome. As far as I can tell, the skill ceiling is pretty much endless since you can continue to improve your combo awareness and mix up trick usage in a level playthrough, and optimize damage with weapon swaps.

Even the story and world-building, while not amazing, is still intriguing enough to hold the campaign together and hold your interest between levels. Couple that with a beautiful artstyle that just pops off the screen, and you're easily looking at one of the top 3 best games I've played this year. Do yourself a favor and just try it, full price or otherwise.

I've seen others complain about the controls in other reviews. I have no idea what they're talking about: this is an incredibly responsive and smooth gameplay experience. Sometimes doing special command input grabs/grinds can be harder with an analog stick, but that's probably the only control scheme-related problem I've encountered. I've also only seen one or two gameplay glitches in my entire playthrough; it's a well-constructed video game in almost every way. The control scheme is also somewhat difficult to master if you want to fully take advantage of your character's abilities, but the basics are still very approachable for casuals. While the game is very punishing when you reach the harder difficulties, in my opinion it's never unfair.

I've also seen some people complain about how campy the game feels, and how you have to play defensively. Absolutely not. Certain weapons in the game actually reward you for using super reflex time effectively, and if you time your encounter with a close-quarters enemy, you can actually charge up the Z-11 to snipe full-health enemies all the way across the map. Similarly, you can time a sniper shot super reflex to make short work of enemies closer to you. There are so many ways to customize combat given a particular situation; you're never forced to play super defensively or super offensively. You can get punished for lingering in one position for too long, but that's pretty much it; it's very free-form and fun to experiment with overall.

There are only two real complaints I have about this game: first, the reward for completing the final level of out-for-blood mode is basically nothing other than a steam achievement. Would have loved to see a bigger reward for quite a difficult accomplishment.. Second, while the replayability is there from a combat and combo perspective, I do wish there were more maps to play around in.

Roll7, if you're reading this, PLEASE add DLC maps, or a level editor. I will happily pay full price for both of them.

Worth playing but wait for sale.

Good formula of hitting dope tricks and swagging out on enemies while spraying them down Max Payne John Wu style with dual wield straps and a shotty.

The few issues that hamper the gameplay somewhat are some of the later level designs and enemy types, which make you feel less like a badass and break up the rhythm of your combos.

Additionally, the protagonist wears the same outfit throughout and it's hard at times for me to sexually objectify her in the bland red jumpsuit, though I do manage. Shawty needs to get better drip.

afroKatsu
afroKatsu

Fantastic game which needs more attention. You'll be completely zoned in and pulling off 720 triple air-flip snipe combos nonstop once you get to grips with the controls. Each level is an arena begging to be replayed and mastered like Doom Eternal or Hotline Miami. While locking story progression behind challenges can force some tedious replaying-but-only-to-do-this-one-specific-thing, it does make you explore the levels more and often subtly nudges you into learning new ways to defeat enemies.

If you aren't able to keep up with the game's hectic pace, there are accessibility options available like reducing the game's speed, getting rid of challenge requirements and infinite ammo so everyone can get something out of the experience.

What a fantastic game, It blends the best parts of Tony Hawk movement with blasting people and it works amazing. You have very low ammo count and get ammo by doing tricks, so shooting bad guys while upside down in midair ends up feeling like a part of the string of trick moves. To get a good score you have to continuously kill enemies, taking too long or taking too much damage between frags will end your 25 kill streak and tank your score.

This comes off as super stylish. Sure, you could carefully go do a big flip+grab to fully restock your ammo before making a safe attack run on each enemy but it's fun to try to pull off outrageous stunts that keep the kills coming in quickly one after another and keep your score combo going up.

If you like what you see in the gameplay videos in terms of visual style and music you should get it as the player movement, enemy and level design all come together to make something special.

My Dad
My Dad

Feels like an indie game, the character's movements are stiff and a bit awkward. The game looks like a lot of fun, but when you get down to the nitty gritty, it's about pressing "shoot" while auto-aiming in slow motion until the level is over. And they attempt to entice you with objectives to accomplish like "Kill an enemy while doing a backflip", and the levels begin to feel like chores. If you love games where the amount of fun you have is dependent on how much you like "getting the high score", this one is for you. Otherwise, its mechanics and levels make for a pretty shallow experience.

Really great gameplay premise and an extremely appealing art style. There are several things that hold this one back for me, though. The ost is very middling and I think its the biggest thing holding this game back from being absolutely stellar. A huge component of the old Tony Hawk games is the soundtrack and does a lot of heavy lifting with regards to getting the player into a flow state. The enemy designs are also very so-so. Kara Hasan has so much character expressed in her simplistic design and I would have loved to see the same qualities put into the other enemies.

If you're looking for something fun, definitely pick this up because its extremely enjoyable to play.

This was excellent I put in a short amount of hours but I felt like I was mastering the game as I advanced. true progression at its best where each level helps you with the next and even the last as there was this never ending urge the further I got to go back and try the older levels again as I was "a lot better now than I was before". loved this

I found myself going for challenges, new tricks, and high scores, like this was a Tony Hawk game.
I planted myself on a few leader boards and proudly glanced at my scores for *several* seconds.
Feels like a return to an arcade classic, combined with a PS1 game, but with more polish and fun than I ever could've expected from looking at it, initially.

Easily recommended.

Buttertop
Buttertop

Very fun, challenging game. Perhaps one of the coolest indie ideas I've seen in some time. Its a great feeling sniping an enemy across the map in bullet time after doing a 720 grab. The soundtrack feels completely on point as well.

My biggest gripe with this game is progression. I think they were going for an old school feel of locking levels behind completing challenges in earlier levels, but it feels like a bit of a drag if you complete a tough level and want to be rewarded with the next one only to find that you have to grind challenges. A more minor gripe is that while theres a story, its almost too minimalistic, and ends up not really leaving an impression.

At the discounted launch $20 price, its a solid recommend, but should have been the permanent price. $30 feels like its pushing it a bit on this one.

Nevertheless, great game that deserves more love.

This game caught me off guard. This is definitely one of the best games of 2022, hands down! It's non stop action, the physics are amazing, the graphics are what they are supposed to be, which is comic book/cell shaded.. It's like Tony Hawk physics meets 3rd person shooter in the Matrix.. slow down time in mid flip off a kicker ramp to aim and shoot your opponent.... with rocket launchers, shot guns, dual pistols, while dodging rockets, snipers, frozen laser beams, and much more. The soundtrack is perfect for this game, as it is much like the futuristic tech slammer music that the 80's inspired. This is a must have, and the price is great for what you get! I consider this a must have, this game could have saved the long dry spell of games in 2022.

Brief and fantastic. Finding out the most efficient ways to tackle each enemy is core to doing well. Soundtrack is also enjoyable with a visual style that's smooth and clear. You don't have to worry about this game not being well constructed, it's rock solid and I experienced no bugs or oddities. Fast pace, fun dodges, and cool roller skate tricks just to add some style to your performance.

Final Contra

Rollerdrome has basic 3rd person shooting mechanics made much more fun by making you have to skate around, dodge enemies, and do tricks to refill your extremely small ammo reserves back up. Unlike most similar looking games, it's actually impossible to bail when doing tricks. This may sound like a knock against the game but it is balanced heavily towards requiring you juggle attacking and dodging to stay alive so just landing some basic tricks between the madness evens out the pace. It's a fun formula that works really well.

My only knocks against the game are that the tone of the barebones story felt a bit off and the THPS 1-3 style challenges on each stage feel a bit like an afterthought since they only come into play when unlocking the very last level and for an achievement.

I beat the main game in 3 hours and that felt like just the right amount of time for what it had to offer. For those looking for more, you can still 100% all challenges and play the Out For Blood mode after you beat the main game which in my opinion is better than the main campaign. Out For Blood trims down the challenges per level in exchange for doubling down on the number of enemies trying to kill you at any given time. I was able to beat that mode in about 2 hours before going back to 100% the challenges.

I'd definitely recommend checking it out when it hits a price you feel is fitting for 3-5 hours of entertainment for just the main game and easily 10+ if you're challenge/achievement hunting.

Rollerdrome has a killer soundtrack, a very unique style of gameplay, and a pretty sweet artstyle. It ramps up difficulty perfectly and unlocks a Dante Must Die style difficulty mode after completion. A 5 hour campaign is definitely on the shorter side but it's replayability is insanely high without being a roguelike or anything like that. And with a story that manages to be intriguing without being overbearing or overstaying it's welcome. This is easily one of the best games I've played this year. 10/10

So apparently I REALLY like sports games... under the strict condition that the player character be given a firearm to use during the competition. So because of this knowledge I elect that the next football series made by EA in order to replace Madden should include an underground market where I can buy my team AR 15's, so they can roll out onto the field with as to dominate anything and anyone standing between them and those over hyped superbowl rings... this game is good.

So it looked like it would be a cool knock off of Roller ball the movie from decades ago. It was, but it was a badly done knock off. Where are all of the other team members and the opposing team. Even tho it is a violent game, It is not at all like the more violent version of roller derby that the movie was. For me to play such a short time in a game and leave a review, means that it really disappointed me. Hell even the name looks to be there to invoke the memories of the movie by us old dinosaurs, yet failed in the execution of the game itself. Get rid of the name for a start if you want us to like this game and maybe I might change my mind.

Probably Jamie

I am yet to finish this game, so consider these early thoughts but i think its so good that i wanted to say something.

Those describing this as THPS x Max Payne x Superhot are right on the money - if that particular combo attracts you just buy it now you will love it.

For everyone else Rollerdrome is a single player, arena based, shooter/skating game. Those familiar with the tony hawks series or any of its copy cats will feel right at home with the controls and the skating itself feels good with a y large number of tricks you can perform. The overall gamer structure also mimics the orginal tony hawks games with each stage having a list of objectives designed to be completed after multiple runs. These can vary from the general (high scores, collect all the tokens) or the specific (do x trick here).

What sets Rolledrome apart is the shooter elements and how they are weaved into the skating mechanics - the shooting itself is good enough, with most weapons having lock on mechanics that make shooting feel cool but actually manageable whilst skating and tricking. The real genius is that you need to do tricks in order to reload - but you only earn points and combo through kills. It means each side of this hybrid is entwined with the other and leads to a very addictive loop. Add into that a generous slow mo ability (further enhance by a dodging system) you can soon go from dying on a level to completing it in one un-ending combo.

This is all wrapped in a beautiful Mobius-inspired cell shaded aesthetic and just enough of a dystopian gameshow narrative that doesnt overstay its welcome.

A wonderful, wonderful game.

This game is NOT a shooter with quirky movement; it is a better Tony Hawk game than any other modern iteration. Buy this if you're interested in a classic arcade-style game with great movement and a combo system.

It's missing that little bit of extra polish and features for me to consider it GOTY material, but it's very close. I loved this game and I'm hoping for some DLC or a Rollerdrome 2. Don't let it meet the same fate the current Tony Hawk Pro Skater series has met.

Hubb

There is going to be a few good similarities that this game will have with certain other games, outside of that however the game overall is excellent if you enjoy doing the cool and crazy thing.

If you are worried about the gun part, the game makes it easy to use and have a slowdown mode that allows you to breathe while taking the shot, in fact it is encouraged to use it as you are rewarded in game by utilizing it. The challenges for each stage are easy to understand and you don't have to worry about 100% them all in one go, once you complete one, it's off the list even when you lose which is a welcoming sign if you are having trouble with the stage.

If you understand the concept of "flow" you will enjoy what the game has to offer as the difficulty ramps up in later stages, I'm only at the halfway mark in game and it's throwing a lot at me but they are not cheap shots at all.

Highly recommend this game if you are familiar with character action games.

For around 20$, it's nearly a crime how nutty the game is, absolute banger there.
If you wanted a Tony Hawk game with some insane gunplay added on top, just get this game already.
Nice style, absolutely good OST, interesting artistic slow paced lore sections thrown between insane action packed moments of the game and an interesting way of mixing tricks and gunplay to make them work together.
Controls are a bit hard to get at first but when you go removing your training wheels, you're zooming and feeling absolutely free.
Truly stands out without being like anything else I saw among other 3rd person shooters.

Reaving Raven
Reaving Raven

Decent concept, wonderful art and style, interesting world, but in practice the game is simply far too congested and clunky

I really, really appeciate what the developer was going for, and the game is fun in the opening stages, but it quickly becomes far too much to manage, with the controls feeling limiting and constricting when compared to the stylish, free-flow nature of the game.

As many other reviews have stated, it's like Tony Hawk mixed with Max Payne, but the issue is that the skating and shooting both feel much clunkier than either of those titles, and with an extremely fast-pace, very small arenas, and a ton of enemies, it quickly devolves from stylish, slick fun to a mash of buttons struggling to remember how to do anything at all.

I have played my fair share of games with complex controls, and I'm sure there is a hardcore crowd out there that this game appeals to, but for me, the controls were simply far too clunky and slow to respond to what I wanted the game to do, and when combined with the frantic nature of the game it just became frustrating. I would love to try to improve my skills, I love games like this, but to me it feels less an issue of my understanding and moreso the timing/animations/targeting, etc that are all working as intended, just not smooth enough for me, personally, for this style of game and combat. A real shame.

Just hundred percented the game and I enjoyed every moment of it. Beautiful art style mixed with smooth gameplay. I really love the steady increase in difficulty as you get further in the campaign, and the challenges make for nice replayability. If you stick with it and continue to clear each task, you can really feel your own improvement as later levels become easier despite increased enemy count and variety.

What little story there is proves interesting but I definitely wouldn't pick this up solely for the narrative as it's on the lighter side. It does what is necessary to service the gameplay but other than that, it's mainly set dressing, and it doesn't need to be anything more.

If you ever liked the Tony Hawk games, Jet Set Radio, Devil May Cry, or any Bullet Hells, you will eat this up.

RileyX

the graphic design is beautiful, the music fitting and the idea is pretty cool.
but the controls are idiotic. you always have to press 3 buttons at the same tiime during each jump, cause the more complex the tricks are, that you're doing, the quicker you get ammunition. cause thats how you get ammo in this game. meanwhile you shoot people with LMB and activate slow-motion with RMB, so theres a lot to press in this game, which makes it hard to play on keyboard. Seems that people with controller have less struggle with it. So if you dont have a controller, don't buy it!

GeoPin

I love this game, I knew I would, I was one of the 1st to post on discussion and one of the last before the sale ends to review it. The Tony Hawk and Max Payne connection, has been well documented, by the wonderful players. I think if you like those games and hobbies like skating, skateboarding or shooting games. There is a reason to try it and find the love this game has.
The Matrix Like Bullet time effect, is the best tweaked version of it I have seen and lends heavily to the action and game play. The cel-shaded art style is incredible work in itself. The weapons all feel good and fun, the tricks you perform are a blast and have a lot of variations in them, that you can pull off. If your a game technical master, you will love this game for the hardcore. If you are a free flowing, free form player, who just wants to have fun, then this game has that, for you as well. Many options in the menu, from game play settings to visual display and a nice control interface, where you can change the game, to how it fees good for you. Overall, this is my game of the year choice and the most innovative, let's take a chance by a developer in a while. There gamble on uniqueness, has paid off big time and all these great things come right out of the box. A very well thought out game, by the developers in all aspects. This is the closest thing to a Rollerball like experience and I cannot wait to see the future of this game! I want to add one more thing, if the developers can make a high quality game like this, with the Unity engine, I cannot imagine their potential, with a bigger budget and a bigger studio. Kudos to the devs, for the level of quality of their work.

It is not every day that you find a game that happens to challenge you in ways you never thought to expect, so when finding this game's premise absolutely "Dope as shit", I just had to play it. However, this game has a difficult learning curve that one may find difficult to follow. I myself am only halfway through the game itself and it offers all sorts of challenges (personally, the timed challenges always seem to get me) from the insane tricks and point scores you can get to the practice of ammo efficiency when killing goons (and how to refill ammo). I'd say that this community, however small it can be, actually can be learned from in terms of methods and efficiencies that will take you from an A-rank player to an S-ranker, if you take the time and practice your hands with them. Overall, this game can break preconceptions of how a game can challenge and push you towards becoming an excellent gamer. All of this should be expected from a fully-fledged 60$ game, but this in itself is a testament to the glory of new blood in the gaming developer industries. I hope to see more of this franchise in the coming future!

This is a great game, ignore what the dumb games journalist people are saying. Controls may be a bit hard to get a hold of at first, but you'll learn fairly quickly especially if you have experience with some form of skating game. I will say it is a pretty short game for the price, but it does have a good bit of replay value and the initial run through the game is VERY enjoyable. You feel unstoppable once you have the skills down to reliably do tricks, dodge and hit enemies. Big thumbs up. Visually very fitting.
Some changes I would have made: more foreboding and intense music for bossfights. Final (and second) boss should be harder and more different than the first boss. Arena visual themes should be more varied, even if it were just the color schemes. Some color selection or unlockable outfits would be appreciated.
Again, big thumbs up.

It's not like Tony Hawk's where you're trying to stick the landings, it's all about making it flow from one target to the next while maintaining a combo. This makes it endlessly replayable as you constantly devise new ways to tie it in smoother and more efficient

Wake up skater, we have a Rollerdrome to shoot.

You go fast, you shoot fast, you jump high, not too high though cause you might not be able to avoid those lasers. But otherwise i won't be able to do Coffin 1080 which i need. How do i do it? Nevermind, a sniper is aiming, you gotta go fast, a guy is going to stomp your ass, you better jump, but the lasers are still going.

But in midst of all that chaos, the FLOW is born. You lose yourself in the game, in getting better, in pure enjoyment, just like the good old days. The combo is getting higher, stakes are rising, things are exploding, bodies are flying, slowmo is there for you to chill out the thrills. And then...

At the time of writing, I have not played enough of the game to know if it's truly a top-to-bottom masterpiece or a GOTY contender. MaxPain999
MaxPain999

Tony Hawk meets May Payne gun play. At first felt like a fun little arcade game that admittedly has a little difficulty spike about half way through. Sure the trick roster is small, and the gun play ain't all that complicated but play enough and suddenly it'll click and you'll be performing areal bullet ballets, prioritizing enemies by how easily they can get you to that active dodge, chasing those high scores.

In short, fun for a quick romp, but if it hooks you and you get over that difficulty hump it's becomes an addictive chase to the top of the leaderboard reminiscent of popping quarters in an arcade machine.

GarbageMunch
GarbageMunch

7/10 I would recommend playing through at least once

The combat is the best part of the game, most of the time it is fluid and gives the feeling of being a fluid machine that can wipe out the competition without breaking a sweat. However, at times the smooth, fast-paced movement did conflict with the gunplay at times, but is nothing too extreme.

The visuals are good, no complaints there.

The story has no impact on the game and is a generic evil corporation taking over the country/world idea presented in a myriad of cyberpunk/dystopian stories.

The length of the game is too short, the Out for Blood mode offers nothing exciting once you complete the campaign. You can finish the game fairly quickly if you are not trying to complete every challenge.

I only experienced one glitch where I fell out of bounds. I had no frame rate issues running this on the Steam Deck.

Overall I did enjoy Rollerdrome but I do not know if I would revisit.

I want to share my thoughts as an aggressive rollerskater in real life. From the first level, this game is a work of art both in design and mechanics. The skill, style, and range of options in the controls is immense, and everything feels fast and responsive. However, the game does leave me wanting an experience closer connected to modern park skating. The tricktionary borrows skateboard-specific terms like nose-tail instead of toe-heel (understandable from the developer's past titles), and while modern skaters accomplish grinds by customizing wide trucks and slide blocks beneath their plates, Kara accomplishes these on narrow trucks and plates (not impossible, just much more difficult). It's a minor gripe, as it feels like a missed connection to an under-documented yet fast-growing sport with little rep in gaming, but doesn't really hinder the gameplay or setting itself. Ultimately, Rollerdrome is a dream come to life and I hope it inspires more extreme quads in games.
(also I'm landshark_errant on instagram if anyone wants to see my amateur reels, look for me in 2030 haha)

Very fun core gameplay-- which the game leans too much on.

The core of the game is incredibly exciting. the combination of tricks and slo-mo and combat is really nice. Turning on my playlist and just flowing with the music, in and out of slo-mo is the kinda feeling I love. Same feeling I get on my bike irl. However there are some areas where I feel the game is lacking, narrative delivery, stage variety, and boss fights. The game is very fun, don't get me wrong. But I can'a hel but feel a little disappointed it didn't reach its full potential.

The narrative should be more integrated into the gameplay. The first person sections were cool. They took me back to being on the football team, waiting in the locker room, pre-game, hyping each other up, definitely cool sections however it would be cool to see some narrative delivered through the action gameplay.

Stage variety was also missing. Having some transition stages with no enemies- or more of a race/goal oriented level would have been great to break up the constant arena after arena.

On top of that the lack of boss fights was sorely disappointing. There is only one which is then recycled for the last level. It's a very fun boss, which really makes me feel like not having more exciting large, ride-able enemies was a missed oppurtunity.

But ye- in conclusion the core of the game is very fun, however I feel like all that surrounds it isn't quite robust or varried enough.

Imagine if you were playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and whilst doing a 900 Christ Air on a halfpipe, you're getting sniped at by somone but then midair dodge, pop bullet time, and snipe the other person from all the way across the map while midair... yeah, that's exactly the type of feeling you get from this game! If you dig games where you can enter that sweet flow state of perfect dodging things and being overall stylish, by all means pick this one up. The only thing I'd knock it for is that while it's not frequent, occasionally movement while get a little awkward depending on your camera and/or the way you intereact with walls and or rails... sometimes it feels like you get the opposite direction that you intended to get, but it's never been to the point of frustration and admittedly it could be my own personal skill issue, I dunno, but otherwise everything feels great and I've never been frustrated from dying... in fact, it just kept me coming back for more!

Outside of the levels with pits and easy-to-reach-out-of-bounds, I've been enjoying the game a lot. Once you're not going for challenges and instead just focusing on score, it becomes extremely fun.

I really want to like this, and for a little bit I did. The first couple stages feel so good to play and replay. They all feel like they're really tightly designed with an ideal perfect route. It's a really satisfying stylish power fantasy with some really striking visuals. I liked it.

I got to the 5th stage and they introduce a new enemy. This enemy teleports if you shoot them to a random spot on the stage. They always have a ton of health so you will have to chase them at least 2-3 times to kill them. They teleport as far from you as possible each time and target you with a long tracking beam that also leaves a flame trail along the ground. On the 5th stage they added maybe 2 of these enemies and it was a little annoying.

Stage 6 introduces what feels like at least 6 of these enemies simultaneously on top of multiple enemies with shields or who raise shields upon being shot, each of whom ALSO have really high amounts of health. Within about a minute you're being tracked by 6 different slightly differently timed lasers, multiple enemies shooting rockets, mines everywhere, lasers usually making unavoidable trails immediately below ramps, and huge hitboxes off these shield guys hitting the ground

It gets way too hard WAY too fast and due to the enemies who constantly move at random in particular, it really quickly loses that flow and tight designed feeling the early stages gave. I found it so frustrating I decided to just refund while I still could. The devs don't understand what's actually fun about their game. It's a bummer.

Worth more like $20. I haven't complete the game, but based on the 3/4 stages I've been through, it's not fleshed out enough to be worth $30.

Actually fantastic. Game play is excellent and there is insane replay value. Perfect steam deck game too.

I like the visual style and general gameplay idea of this game, but the game ramps up in difficulty where it becomes less about being able to do cool, stylish things in motion to keep the momentum and instead sitting a lot of time in the bullet time mode, jumping from end to end of the map to chase down teleporting enemies, dealing with glitchy snipers that only leave you a millisecond of perfect dodge time before you get shot, combos broken up by awkwardly bumping into walls and falling into pits in the stage, and just spamming tricks in order to reload your weapons against increasingly spongy enemies.

If you're really interested in the concept, I'd wait for a discount after watching some gameplay videos of some of the later levels to understand what you're getting into.
