I want to let everyone who has become, for very good reason, wary of CoG games because of their political propagandizing this game is a Godsend. it is well written, with MUCH more impact choices, and as it will tell you people are treated differently based on sex and race, which they should as that makes for a good story.

I've also played CoG games in the past where on their third more modern book does a 180 on this and suddenly starts propagandizing, and I can tell you. That is not the case with this series, so feel secure for now that this is a great tale and one I am now enjoying a second playthrough through the whole series, whereas I played through the third book 3 times, I'm not enjoying to play through the whole series for a second time. So, do buy this game if you enjoy what you've read about the story, and if you enjoy this type of gaming experience, as I do.

Do not get me wrong. The writing is good, but the choices are not. The choices you make impact essentially too much, you can back yourself into a corner without knowing it and have no clue what you did wrong, and have no chance of surviving.

CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH
It's the first in a current trilogy. With a 4th book now under way
The writing is superb and i'm captivated every time I play through it
It's a Choose your own Fiction story set in a low/high? Fantasy Napoleonic wars era.
and arguably the best I've ever read
the Author is very very VERY talented and draws me in every time I read it

Fantastic beginning to a longer-running series. While this one doesn't have quite as many branches as the later games, it does a great job of taking you from nobody to a minor somebody. The choices are fun, low risk, the characters are understandable and relatable... Really, if you like this genre, try it

what a dissapointing exercise in a failed skill system

getting locked into -20 loyalty before you even fight, in addition to every single check raising loyatly afterwards being around 3-5? yeah

great when the first actual check requires loyalty to be quite high for you to not autofail instantly, completly ignoring every single thing that happend before, including the entirety of your character

riveting

friend of mine sang his praises about this game, but getting snubbed after one choice, the only wrong one apparently, left me feeling like my choices weren't worth anything unless i picked the correct ones

other than that, i didn't feel invested in this setting/genre that didn't draw me in as much as i wanted it to, it felt a little bland

ChaosEvolution

Ehh, personally I think the game is too focused on making you some kind of superhero, jumping head first into every battle rewards you while approaching things more coolheaded leaves you with nothing.
I finished the game with basically a penal legion with low morale and low loyality, which was an interesting experience but it really feels like that the game is not meant to be played this way.
For example learning the language of my enemy, which I thought might prove useful, was utterly pointless because all it got used for was a single occasion with little to no importance.
So yeah if you want to play a hotheaded soldier with plotarmor go for it, but if your objective is surviving the war and not glory then you will notice that the author simply didn't account for that.

Edit: After some testing it seems like the game is specifically made for charisma and strength characters, while intelligence gets mostly ignored, or better said without charisma you don't get the opportunity to even use your brain:
At one point my character was like :"I have a better plan!" , and the commander was like "I don't care, I just want everyone to agree that my plan is the best."
So yeah the game was written for a very specific playstyle : "Command grabbing glory hound"
Additionally there are choices that are simply wrong: saying "a pleasure" is rude ... you need to say "at your service"... which leads to a completely different reaction.
How would I as a reader know how your fictional nobility works?

Ultimately there is a "right" way to play while the other ways are pretty underdeveloped which invalidates the whole "choice"-aspect of the game.

Never written a review before but this game deserves one. I have so enjoyed Sabres, that on completion I brought the second chapter.

So, to start, I have just finished Sabred of Infinity for the first time, so if you want to know what its like to play through it 5 times, ill have to get back to you (because i do plan mulitple playthroughs)

I hardly ever write reviews for games on steam. For the most part, i think someone should be able to judge how they are going to feel about a game based on the general description of the game and its overall reception. Most people, i think (including myself), even if they look at reviews, go into the reviews with a certain disposition towards the game one way or another and tend to discount the reviews that dont already side with their own pre-formed opinions.

This game is uniquly special though.

As there are not a lot of good, modern text based games these days, at least that i know of, i feel the need to review Sabres of Infinity.

This might be one of the best games i have ever played.
If Sabres of Infinity was 19.99, i would tell every one of my friends to buy it.
There are plenty of books that cost 10-20 dollars, and this is essentially an amazing book that you get to be a part of.
The writing is amazing, and while i usually hate games that force me to play as a specific person (i love to create my own original character) this game makes you truely feel the pressures of the role you must undertake, and it makes you enjoy it.
Its quite a respectable length, especially for its price, and they choices you make all feel like they have weight and influence over the course of your story. I have only finished one playthrough, so im not 100% how much can change, but it seems like there are a lot of different options, and i have already seen several choices that i made that i know caused certain decisions later down the line to either succeed or fail.

If you are someone who has played games like Baulders Gate, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Kotor 1-2 (#Bioware Fanboy) and the best part of those games was the story, dialogue, and decision making, you WILL enjoy this game. Its not quite the same as any of those, because obviously there is no "Combat" or controlling your character on a screen, but the decisions are just as real.

It is a deeply immersive and well described and drawn out world, with characters that feel real, where every choice you make feels like the most important choice of the game. For the quality of content you get, compared to the price of the game, they are basically giving this out for free, because i would pay a hell of a lot more for this game than they're asking. 10/10, Im off to buy Guns of Infinity

Cryptar

This is an enjoyable choose your own adventure book and has a rich lore that can be absorbed at the reader's discretion - it is not forced upon you making the "game" more accessible. The main negatives I would point out is that choices do not usually affect the story as a whole, only your standing in it. It is also debatable as to how much effect this has. And some choices seem to be mandatory to prevent an early end, however much some do not make sense to me that I will avoid mentioning due to spoilers. The biggest complaint I have is the consistent negative nature before your character, although I enjoy bleak scenarios and the idea of a steady climb up the ladder of command, nonetheless your gallantry seems to be all but ignored at most points. However, if you can get in the feel of the story and enjoy such negativity this is the game-book for you. I have always loved choose your own adventure and this is the closest to a streamlined version we can get without forgetting those who enjoy being lost in lore.

This is not an elaborate review, however they enjoyment and excitement I have been able to crop up from this game with only a couple of hours is astonishing. It's a steal at this price point, including almost 2 full 20$ novels due to the nature of the varying paths and decisions available. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a love of reading, of role playing games. If you would like to check out some of the gameplay available, I will leave a link below to my channel, where I play through the game. Spoilers beware, although your playthrough will not be the same as mine.

I loved chose-your-own-adventure books as a child, and maintain fond memories of placing finger after finger between pages, if only to keep some track of the trail of the tale.

Sabres of Infinity far exceeded my expectations of a similar, if digital, experience. I didn't die on the first run-through, though I did twice on the next. Five successful game completions down, and still, I had not gained a simple steam achievement. Though I have yet to play as a coward or, simply, the juxtaposition of myself, in which the seemingly most stupid decision is taken. One day, perhaps I shall, if only to see where it takes me - other than death.

In regards to the lack of Decorations, perhaps I am simply playing a longer game than in necessary, in that where I could not myself decide on a course of action, I was guided by the simple question: 'What would Raj Whitehall do?' His was the longest game of all, but he would not, I believe, have been out of place in this realm.

For now, I, undecorated still, retire as a Captain, and a Knight of the Red; eagerly awaiting the sequel. I hope it ties in with the decisions I have made in this game.

10 out of 10, the price is low, the writing is godly, i recommend to any reader because this is that good of a novel, and the best is that there is enough variation for you to feel that the journey is your owm.

-I am going to be plain. This is a book. A book with choices in it that draw you into the story and lore of the world more so than a normal book.

-So yes...I do recomend this. I loved the story because I felt like I was that Dragoon officer. They don't exagerate the whole "VAST UNSTOPPABLE POWER! OF YOUR IMGANATION" thing.

-This is a great story to get sucked into.

-10/10! Books are cool again!

Sabre of Infinity is a long worded game which can take up to hours to complete. I believe it should be condenced somehow just so you don't have to start again everytime you exit out the game. Also the saves should be closer to each other.

Subjective Review

I like the setting, real world and fantasy wise.

A bit hard for me as a veteran of these games to gain good stats. [Saying this due to carrying into the next game]

Very complex choices which all matter in expected and unexpected ways.

Carry your character over and continue a'la Mass Effect.

Amazing writing, Top shelf writing and choice management. Few/no illusions of choice.

BarbaBro
BarbaBro

A well written and intense military story reminding of the 18th century and focusing on partly forgotten values like honor and on climbing (or not climbing?) the hierarchy. A setting with very little fantasy elements beside the world and characters.

Very good story telling. As with every game of this kind/genre there could be more decision making but still totally worth the price.

Nemesis 2002
Nemesis 2002

It's gripping, it's tense, it's above all very-well written, I can't recommend this enough to those of you who like a good old chose-your-own adventure playbook.
In this first episode (quite lengthy), you have a wide array of choices ensuring high replayability, and your choices are imported to the second episode (Guns of Infinity).
The writing is credible, you can feel the author has researched actual veteran's memories to give an account of war that you can buy into.

Where to start with this game.

Firstly i have to say that the writing was absolutely phenomenal, Paul Wang is an extremely talented author. I was impressed by other title Mecha which is also an excellent game, but i believe this game is better.

Yes this setting is more niche than mecha but i implore you to give this game a shot i promise you it is a fantastic read and at 4.99 well worth the price tag.

GET THE ANDROID VERSION INSTEAD!

This is a brilliant game, but honestly - it's not particular computer friendly.
You have to pretty much play the entire game in one sitting - where on on the android version, you can shut down you phone and reopen the app, and it picks up right where you left off.

Rating: 8/10
Budget: Extremely affordable
Replayability: Medium
Length: This is a fairly long text based game - it should take most people few days to get through it.

I would have given a higher rating if:
There had been pictures, background music and perhaps a few sound effects.
Also, the Android version is honestly SO much better.

The game is more or less described on the steam page. You play as a Junior Officer in a cavalry regiment in a fictional world resembling ours in the early to mid 1800's, but where Germany has apparantly been replaced by an Elven Nation, and the rest of Europe appears united against, what I deduce to be Slavic nations.
There even appears to be some reference to Colonial America in some of the provinces held by the European-Equavialent nation.

The technological is prior to the invention of revolvers and proper artillery platforms.

The game features minor magic - all nobility in the game are referred to as "bane blooded" who have the innate ability that they are sensitive to magic. Some can even cast spells through runes, used for healing and killing on the battle field, as well as forging magical weapons and armor.

Banecrafted armor and weapons are very rare in the world though - reserved for particularly elite soldiers and Knights of the Red order.

Banecasters are also fairly rare - only on few occasions do they become relevant in the actual game.

The game is continued in a Sequel called Guns of Infinity, and your save-file can be transferred.

I was disappointed that certain choices leave very little impact in the game, and other choices leave no impact at all - where as it often seems to be some of the more unlikely choices that seem to have lasting impacts.

There is a balance act to the game, but ultimately your story will always be different depending on your chocies, which is very interesting.

I can't wait for the third installation.

Dottoman
Dottoman

I tried to play as a high-minded, noble officer. In the end I got to CHOOSE to make a last stand, vastly outnumbered and outgunned, just to give my allies a chance to escape and regroup. The important thing to remember is that this amazing heroic action isn't forced on you. There is an alternate path (a couple, actually) where you can pack up and run away.

So few of these games that claim they're all about meaningful choices actually contain any. Sabres of Infinity isn't one of those.

TenchiSaWaDa

Hell of a story that had me laughing, invested and thoroughly engaged. A great time with so many choices and differences that it was a blast. Everything felt meaningful. Save system is a bit rough but it makes it impactful

Redfren

Of all the choice games I own this was by far the least enjoyable one I have played. I would not recommend this to anyone, It's beyond irritating, and the very fact that your choices seem to have such little effect on the game makes it feel like your reading a story and not taking part in it.

ElSuperGhosto
ElSuperGhosto

Nurdbot
Nurdbot

A fantastic 'choose your own fantasy gun powder officer career' adventure, which I enjoy from beginning to end.

For those concerned about people stating the shortness of the content, It is apparently part 1 of 4. The 2nd game Guns Of Infinity is already out and the 3rd one is currently in production. Some of the choices you don't think matter will be carried over in your save games to the next one.

Give this one a chance.

GoshMan

An excellent romp through a fantasy-influenced world broiled in Napoleonic warfare or mass slaughter. Highly recommended.
I own Sabres of Infinity on the Chrome web store and have read through it at least a dozen times. It's been an inspiration for myself to get involved with writing, and has reinforced my love for the historical fiction and historical fantasy genres.

Now, if you are expecting a visually grandiose game to play, perhaps Sabres is not for you, but if you enjoy deep storytelling and reading well-flowing prose, then you should definitely pick this one up and at least give it a chance. Interactive Novels are a slowly growing market, there's more and more coming out each year, and this one belongs on top of the pile of must-reads.

I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
I wanna good mount when the bugle sounds and I hear the cannons' roar
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war

I wanna horse in the volunteer force that's riding forth at dawn
Please save for me some gallantry that will echo when I'm gone
I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long

I'd not a good foot soldier make, I'd be sour and slow at march
And I'd be sick on a navy ship, and the sea would leave me parched
But I'll be first in line if they'll let me ride, by god, you'll see my starch
Lope back o'er the heath with the laurel wreath underneath that vict’ry arch

Let me earn my spurs in the battle's blur where the day is lost or won
I'll wield my lance as the ponies dance and the blackguards fire their guns
A sabre keen, and a saddle carbine and an army Remington
Where the hot lead screams with the cold, cold steel let me be a cav’lryman

Let 'em play their flutes and stirrup my boots and place them back to front
For I won’t be back on the rider-less black (jack) and I'm finished in my hunt
I wanna be in the cavalry if I must go off to war
I wanna be in the cavalry, but I won't ride home no more

SoI is very well written, but ultimately, it has a linear plot that feels more like trial and error problem solving than actually choosing your own adventure. Your choices aren't about customizing your game ending, but about figuring out what it takes to move forward. There are some endings that are better than others, but ultimately, they all end up in the same conclusion.

As a military man, myself, I absoultely loved this story. I grew so attached to this story that I found myself physically reacting to the events as they unfolded. I'm now incredibly eager to get onto the next one. The game surpassed my expections, both in the quality of writing and the immersion. I liked it very much.

However, pleeeease put a proper saving mechanic into it! I had to play one long session way beyond my normal waking time, so as not to loose my progress. This really doesn't make any sense and shouldn't be too difficult to make it possible to simply save the game when you feel like it.

I bought this alongside its sequel "Guns of Infinity" and how Sabres ends definitely has an impact on the story of Guns. Even if you don't end up as the most decorated and successful officer, it's still a wild ride regardless. Recommended for those who like reading, role-playing, and military themes with a pinch of low fantasy.

the_walking_kyle

Paul Wang is great at creating immersive worlds you want to play in. But while the world is interesting, the story, your story is painfully average. I really felt like I was a soldier in this war, but I just never had enough to do.

There's a few different ways you can play. Mainly it's: How much do you sacrifice to get ahead in your career? And what is the best way to end this war?

Pros:
-Long story.
-Fair mechanics.
-Chapter saves.
-Can improve character stats over time.
-Earn money and buys things.
-Earn reputation and use it to get things.

Cons:
-9/10ths boredom, 1/10th pure terror. Too few decisions, but with big impact to stats and/or story.
-Story really needed something to give it more entertainment value. It has no romance, very little intrigue, and too few decisions.
-The combat consists of long pages of text with 2-3 decisions that can heavily decide the fate of the battle.

Final Verdict:
-It's just too boring and average. It needed something to spice it up or keep you on your toes. Instead you just wait... and wait... and wait.... then misread something and screw yourself. I just can't recommend it.

For me: the best of his genre:
-long enough both in terms of words and in terms of story
-quite a few game mechanics for the genre (attributes, health, troop management, money ...)
-NPCs with different facets who evolve
-interesting themes (honour/ruthlessness/ambition)
-even if you die, I find it always make an interesting story

For a game with few images and no real "gameplay" it really makes you feel immersed as a soldier who works his way up the ranks however he chooses. Are you an honorable hero? A dastardly coward. Or maybe a coward with a good heart, who wants tries his best but it just isn't good enough. All is possible and more. This game really lets you feel the weight of your decisions, to the point where while i was playing i would feel sadness everytime some of my men died, and i worked as hard as i could to keep them alive. This payed off as by the ending of the game against overwhelming odds i told my men that any who wished to retreat could with no repercussions, and not a single one ran. The game is the price of a coffee, and provides a far more enjoyable experience then a coffee. Buy it, you almost certainly wont regret it.

If you're on this page, chances are you are interested in these sort of games, just don't know whether this game is worth it or not... It absolutely is! The story is amazing, and your choices do actually matter (that is, to some degree), so if you want to enjoy a good interactive story, I couldn't recommend a better game... I'm rewriting my review because the third book is coming out likely within the year and I replayed the game a couple months back. Honestly the game is really really good, the setting is detailed and fascinating but not so cumbersome to be boring, the writing is evocative in ways that make you feel present in whatever scene is described while also doing a great job of making you feel like an officer in an army. The choices are seriously interesting too, with your options ranging from ending up a disgraced officer with little renown or one of the most prestigious up and comers in the army. Really good stuff and the second game only gets better.

*I played this game in the Hosted Games omnibus app*

A regular reader of my reviews advised me to check out Paul Wang's Dragoon Saga (also known as "The Infinite Sea," after the world in which it is set). "It will change your life," he promised. I was skeptical. I'd always figured I would get around to it eventually, but it had never stuck out in my mind as exceptionally enticing. "The career of a young military officer in a quasi-historical setting" isn't the most original premise - the first CS game I ever played was about exactly that - and war fiction has never been a genre to which I was particularly drawn. But I decided I would give *Sabres of Infinity*, the first book of the Dragoon Saga, a try.

I don't know that it's changed my life, exactly, unless you count turning me into a Paul Wang fan. Fortunately, he's one of the more prolific CS writers, having written four official CoG titles as well as *Sabres* and its sequel, *Guns of Infinity*. That all should be enough to tide me over until the third volume, *Lords of Infinity*, comes out - whenever that may be.

*Sabres of Infinity* is such a polished and mature work, it's amazing to consider that this was Wang's first published game, the product of a college student in his early twenties. The world of the Infinite Sea is grounded in European history and military tradition in a way that speaks to a depth of knowledge born of hundreds of hours of research, but it's not just the Napoleonic Era with the serial numbers filed off. Wang has obviously constructed this world with meticulous care, in terms of history, geography, cultural norms and values, societal roles, traditions, and even socioeconomics.

Despite some understated low-fantasy elements, *Sabres* is easily one of the most realistic war games I've played. Wang doesn't contrive reasons to put his wet-behind-the-ears PC at the center of major military decisions. The character spends at least as much time taking orders as giving them. He begins his military career patrolling a remote outpost, long months of tedium punctuated by occasional bloody skirmishes. And yet, the choices he makes as he carries out those orders - his priorities, his recklessness or caution, courage or cowardice, assertion of will or mindless obedience, will determine the course of his career. He can build his reputation and rise through the ranks, die in battle, or - perhaps worst of all - settle for mediocrity. The ending I got, although it would probably be considered a "bad ending" in gameplay terms, was so in keeping with who my character was that I couldn't even complain.

Wang's treatment of war is richly nuanced, in a way I think most of the soldiers whose memoirs I've read would approve. There's glory in it, and excitement, and also sadness and atrocity. It's about the battlefield, but also about politics and discipline and morale and the camaraderies and rivalries among men. It is primal and raw, humanity at its worst and occasionally its best. A lot of people on the CoG forum have mentioned avoiding this game because it's genderlocked to male. I understand why that might be unappealing to players weary of the oversaturated male default in the gaming world, but I would like to suggest this game may be worth a try anyway.

*Sabres of Infinity* is an amazing game. I'll be very excited to see what comes next in the world of the Infinite Sea.

Worth it for the bad ends and elevated by its sequels.

There are a select few perfect ways to play this game and you will be doomed to failure if you don't follow them - you'll miss out on many experiences you'd otherwise have. It doesn't matter if you think a certain decision your character could make might work. The author has a clear idea on what they think is right and wrong.

It's also unclear that you'll miss out on content by making certain decisions. Being successful can actually punish you by locking you out of content after you seek to raise rank.

There is no romance until game 2 and it's only 2 options. The third game has yet to be released.

Overall, a linear story with merely the illusion of choice, IMO.
