Exciting story and brilliant ways of solving these cases

this installment tries its hardest to distract the players from the core mechanic of the game: cracking a case. had Frogwares discard the QTEs and the unnecessary and plot-unrelated puzzles (the entire imaginary puzzle level holmes constructed in the Mayan temple is a great example of this) they will have themselves a pretty decent game underneath. why can't detective games just focus on the detective side of things (that is, an interesting cast of characters and an actually interesting case to solve)?

A lot of potential undercut by too much spoon-feeding. I love the format of this game and the deduction mechanism. However, you can solve nearly all puzzles by brute force pretty quickly or skip them entirely, and any mistake you make is either immediately reversed or inconsequential. The cases are pretty fun, although one case in particular tends to drag on due to a lot of story-unrelated puzzles. Overall not bad, but could have been great if seen to its full potential.

It's a pretty well rounded adventure/puzzle/mystery game. The gameplay felt quite diverse. Puzzles, quick time events, lockpicking, stealth missions etc.

The last case was a bit of a wtf, but I overall enjoyed most of the cases. It was my first sherlock holmes game and I had a great time.

I ran into a glitch at one point ( I kept spawning outside of the playable location and falling under the "map") it was fixed by loading a previous save file. Beside that no other issues.

I got it on sale and it was worth every cent. I haven't played any other game of the franchise so I can't compare. Controls weren't bad and the characters/stories were interesting and engaging. You can choose the deductions you make and I rly liked that. I recommend it!

Enjoyed this game so much, I like the balance between action and investigation, roaming the streets of London is the best, I just miss you could interact more with the NPCs you find on the streets.

The game holds your hand through the case all the time and leads you to the final deductions. Too easy, not much of the detective work here.

A very half-assed game. Testament and Crimes & Punishment were better games in every regard. The iconic ukranian jankiness is even more present in this release than the previous ones and it's not a good thing. It seems to me that they gave up on trying to make fun puzzles and instead fill the game with QTEs and cutscenes. This doesn't work that well because the animations are amateurish, voice acting is subpar and the gameplay is railroaded. The sudden change in Sherlock's model to a Downey Jr. lookalike doesn't help either. Plus, they keep increasing the local pricing as if this is some timeless classic.

Edit: After finishing the first 2 chapters, I can no longer play with my controller because it makes the camera spin non-stop. Again, ukranian jank at its finest. Into the trash it goes!

This is one of the game from series of Sherlock Holmes, which continues with basically the same mechanics as Crimes and Punishments: looking for clues in various locations, interviewing people, some puzzles time to time - all of that in order to create a connected web of deductions to solve the case. I knew what I was getting, when purchased the game and I got it. It may not be a spectacularly creative game, which amazes with ingenuity, but it is solid, good game, which I enjoyed. So I have no scruples to recommend it for people which have an appreciation for the detective genre.

I've played four Sherlock Holmes games so far, and this one is the best.

There are many new innovative features in this game, such as Holmes' ability to balance on a beam, clicking the mouse at the right moment to accomplish a task, and taking cover to hide from enemies. Holmes must solve five cases, all of which have brilliant plots, although the details and dialogues are often difficult to follow. The graphics and artwork are stellar, and the developers have also managed to come up with some ingenious new puzzles and booby traps that will keep players guessing and trying for hours. And thankfully, they have done away with the ghastly gore that was present in some of the earlier Sherlock Holmes games. Players can reach different conclusions for each case, and they can replay a case if they don't reach the correct conclusion at the end. And finally, the game doesn't have serious technical problems unlike the earlier games.

Now for the bad. My greatest complaint is that at least two of the puzzles are almost impossible to solve because there are so many possibilities and the clues are either inadequate or misleading. Thankfully, the game lets you skip these puzzles if you are stuck on them. In particular, one of the puzzles in the second case requires you to open the deduction menu, and the game only hints indirectly at this. Once you create the correct deductions, you will get to play an entire new level with extremely challenging puzzles and booby traps; however, if you don't even have to clue to open the deductions menu you will miss out. Likewise, it is often hard to complete some character portraits do to inadequate clues about the characters' lifestyle. Another annoying feature is that the game won't let you load the last checkpoint unless you exit out of it and go to the main menu, which is problematic because the load times are long. Lastly, the story becomes a bit fantastical at times.

Despite the drawbacks, this is a must-play game. I would rate it 8.8/10. Can't wait to play the next installment in this series !

This game sucks. There's no difficulty settings, so I end up getting stuck in a sequence loop with no way of getting out without exiting the game and looking for a walkthrough or tips online. I've tried to get through the forest/swamp a million times to no success. So I guess that's where the game ends for me. That whole sequence is the antithesis of fun. The reason I buy a Sherlock game is for the puzzles, not the QTE sequences. There should be a way to skip those scenes.

This one is a direct sequel to the events in "The Testament of Sherlock Holmes". That one was....ok?...but this one is downright bad, the worst of the series (at least at the time when it launched)

If you want a sherlock holmes game, go buy Crimes & Punishments (which I cna assure will give you the "true" sherlock holmes experience, or if you want something more story heavy get The Awakened, or Vs. Jack the Ripper.

I enjoyed the challenge of this game. You collect all of the pieces and make it fit together. Each of the cases were complex and required attention to all the clues to make the right decision. It also didn't directly say whether your deductions and moral choices were the accurate and ethical which made it more immersive. Not the longest game though. And there were times I felt frustrated by the controls or trying to figure out what was missing.
Good game.

this is a good game, the sound is not bad, I give 7/10 (if there is a background music, it is better for some scenes) beautiful graphics for 2016, although it is a game that is 6 years old, but the graphics are quite good, realistic, the character is depicted quite realistically and clearly, i scored 8/10 plot: good, makes us deduce like 1 real Sherlock holmes - however some details are a bit confusing and i don't know what to do next, but all is fine after that) 8.5/10. is anyone considering buying this game? then buy and experience, especially for those who like battlefield (new versions) or hitman should experience this game.

Total BS. I usually never leave a review unless I'm mad. I've wiped the side of the Underground Electric Railway car like ten times in Chain Reaction and it never takes. I've even watched a video on it. I've noticed other tricky areas up to this point also, Some places you have to do the same scene 10-15 times just to get it perfect to advance. Funny thing is most of the scenes don't have anything to do with being a detective. Only fun area so far was the Mayan Pyramid area thing. I would give the game a neutral if I could so I guess it would be thumbs down.

Pick this up on sale. Its a fun puzzle type game where you solve some mysteries. The story line is decent and the graphics are ok. At the beginning the mechanics are hard to get used to but they get alot easier with time. The loading times are also fairly long. Its a very forgiving game. Extremely easy to 100%. PS. It was decent. A bit short and the title storyline felt like something they forgot about until the end of the game. The ending was very odd and definitely didn't have the emotional impact they were going for. Most of the puzzles felt dumbed down and tedious. Other than the final chapter, the cases themselves were interesting enough and there were some funny sequences. I would recommend Crimes & Punishments over this one, but this one is fine if you've played other games in the series and are looking for more of the same.

This game started off with a really good 1st case and I was excited to keep playing. 2nd case was not too bad. 3rd and 4th progressively worse with nonsensical puzzles and deductions. The finale was an absolute let down and I couldn't wait to exit the game and delete it. Not worth the money or time.

Some rough edges notwithstanding, I confess that I quite liked Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter; building on the strengths of Crime and Punishments, it felt like a more fully realized game in many ways.

Times are busy for the detectives of 221B Baker's Street. Taking place after the short story, "The Final Problem," Holmes's days of criminal investigations are made more complicated by the presence of his adoptive daughter, Katie Holmes, and a new neighboring tenant who knows that Kate is actually Professor Moriarty's daughter. Though the bulk of the game concerns five separate investigations that are otherwise unlinked, the tenuous relationship between Holmes and Kate does a lot to create a more holistic experience, adding a thematic backbone to the otherwise procedural affairs. Admittedly, this does cause the game to fall firmly in that oh-so-maligned school of games derided for their "dad-ification" of the medium, but it also works here to both make Holmes feel more human and to escalate the stakes of the overall narrative.

Mechanically, things are familiar for fans of previous Frogwares games. Playing primarily like a point-and-click adventure, players collect evidence in the environment by logically deducing how clues fit together and through a variety of sundry minigames. These minigames are... harder to ignore this time around, though, and I suspect that's why many players have a more strongly negative reaction to this game than the previous title. You can smell money being spent on the cinematic presentation here, and there's no sequence that the developers don't attempt to spruce up with a minigame or lovingly animated cutscenes throughout. That said, they suit the more bombastic tone of the game; The Devil's Daughter feels much more like a penny dreadful than the previous Holmes title, which erred closer to the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle short stories and novellas.

And there, perhaps, is the rub. This Sherlock Holmes game is much louder and more energetic than its predecessor, and with that come the narrative complications that upset matters. While everything feels more broadly escalated, the pacing is also more abrupt and everything is presented with a more explosive quality. These faults and deviations in presentation do a lot to grab the player's attention, but I personally found them to ultimately be in service to the much more tightly scripted writing. If the previous title struggled to justify the name Crime and Punishments, this sequel earns its title through and through.

Honestly, I think I may go against the grain here in saying that this title is slightly better than Crimes and Punishments, even if I do say that recognizing my own personal bias towards more melodramatic plots. Though it makes a lot of very deliberate tonal choices and concessions to a more casual audience of mystery games, I think it ultimately sticks the landing. If you've enjoyed other Frogware Sherlock Holmes games or are just looking for a compelling detective game, my recommendation to try The Devil's Daughter isn't just obvious - it's elementary.

Too much Indiana Jones, not enough Sherlock Holmes. Quick time events aren't fun, the temple platforming puzzles are terrible, and the characters just don't feel true to the previous games or the books.

A perfectly enjoyable experience with varying levels of detective, puzzle and light action elements.

Most of the puzzles are fairly simple, but it has an interesting deduction mechanic that made the investigation feel more interactive than what you get with many other games of its genre. As someone who doesn't have much patience for stealth, I also appreciated the choice to opt-out of some of those segments (even if I ended up doing them or going back to them later anyway for that sweet sweet 100%).

I got the game on a sale, and it was definitely worth it for that price. It's not incredibly demanding, but engages the player pretty well.

A fun detective game consisting of 5 cases where you investigate, combine clues and come to your own conclusions that may be right or wrong. The voice acting is good and the overarching story interesting enough to keep you going. The puzzles are mostly fun, though overall a bit too easy. The only thing that bothered me was that the stories and cases themselves were often wrapped up a bit too quickly and you jump from case to case without much of an overall conclusion or epilogue. Still a definite recommendation if you are a fan of investigative detective games!

Doomcloud77

A fun game that I bought on sale for like two dollars, so absolutely worth it! Far shorter than the games I'm used to playing, but I really enjoyed the cases. I selected the hard mode, so I don't know if some of the mechanics are supposed to be easier in Normal mode, but the plank walking minigames were the absolute worst. The other puzzles were enjoyable, and the only one I skipped was the lawn bowling tournament, which I redid after I completed the game. A solid 7/10 in my opinion.

Very good game with good self-deducting skills. You really need to make your own choices based on the information you have. Graphics and gameplay are very good (even for the game's age). Since an entire playthrough is done in about 10 hours, the price is a bit high. So I recommend buying it in a sale.

Storywise it is great (5 mysteries to solve with an overarching story), where all your actions have consequences. I also especially love that you don't have to have all content played (you can ofcourse, but that's a choice) to solve a mystery if you have the right information.

I recommend this game, because I believe it displays Sherlock Holmes' brilliance perfectly. While some puzzles might be challenging to complete, having a written walkthrough by your side makes the game fun. This feels like it should be cannon to the original books, or to the Robert Downy Junior Sherlock Holmes movies. However the story itself is not worth buying some of the other games, Sherlock Holmes the Devil's Daughter and Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments make me want to put on my Sherlock Holmes hat while playing.

“The name is Sherlock Holmes, the address is 221B Baker Street.”

This games is, of course, the second game to Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishments. Between the two games I have to say the first was much MUCH better. The cases within this game are okay, however I feel like the first installment just had a bit more umph to it... if you get what I mean. The puzzles were decent and at times were annoying, if I am being honest, as well as repetitive. There is some mechanics that were in the first game in this one with a sprinkle of something new. SO if you are looking for something BIG and DIFFERENT from the previous game... this ain't it. BUT if you want more of the first game, this could be for you.
For the Achievement Hunters out there, you can get all the achievements in one playthough and are mostly easy. HOWEVER, there is one achievement that can mess that up, which heads up it's in the second case. Not gonna say more than that.
I do recommend this game IF you want more of the first game... kinda like a DLC you could say. Also, if it is discounted, which I did get it discounted. I just don't remember for how much.

Finally, you get to employ a very very important person in your case that was in the first game. No, no it isn't Dr. Watson I am talking about. I am talking about WIGGINS!!!

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter is a third-person mystery game, where you play as the legendary detective as he solves several mystery cases. Due to the loosely-connected stories and character design change, it's hard to pinpoint where the events in this game took place, or even a reboot, but it seemingly took place after The Testament of Sherlock Holmes as it follows a plot from there.

Gameplay is really interesting for me. I would describe it like it's a point-and-click mystery game, but in 3D. You explore places, observe items of interest, and talk to people. You can almost freely roam the places back and forth, and there is fast travel. There are some puzzles and minigames as well, and you can skip those, but I'd advise against it as some of them are fun and you might miss out on some achievements. You can change Sherlock's costume and make-up, which is sometimes required as a disguise, or if you just want to make him fit better or look silly. You can also freely switch between third and first person cameras, which can be helpful when making out smaller details.

There are 5 cases, but sadly only cases 1-3 feel like a "proper" case, with the free roam and all that. Case 4 is short and feels like an intermission, while case 5 is a short, linear finale which makes sense why the game has that name. It would be a lot better if the game was longer and has more proper cases, since I was enjoying the gameplay.

As in any investigation, you can have more than 1 suspect, and Sherlock can either condemn or absolve them. While this mechanic provides more player choice, I think there should only be 1 suspect, as Sherlock is supposed to be a master detective, but you can still condemn or absolve them. You can accuse the wrong person, and the story still continues. It should be a game over. Most cases also lack a good resolution, as each chapter ends after Sherlock accuses the perpetrator, no arrest scene, protest, or whatsoever.

I think Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter is a great game as it combines mystery and exploration, while also having a great story. If you like games with those elements and a Victorian England setting, you will love this game. This is my first Sherlock game, and I will surely try the others.

The cases are engaging and the replayability is decent. The deduction system is improved from Testament. There's something of a "morality" system, only in so much you get to choose how you handle the suspect, on top of choosing the guilty party. This adds to the replay factor, and makes the overall story more dynamic. This one has an overarching story to it which is interesting and humanizes Holmes more than the other games do.

I just bought this game because I just finished Sherlock Holmes Chapter one and appreciated it very very much. I'm 78 and suffer from Essential Tremor. In most cases, this does not interfere seriously with my ability to play even some pretty intense FPS and 3rd person games games, But in THIS game I cannot handle some of it's minigame requirements to coordinate mouse and keyboard. Fortunately, you can skip many of the minigames, so I did that a few times when they were unplayable (for me) or bloody boring (I'm talking about a series of different floors with dangerous tiles).

So with that said, YES, I recommend this game, and if you like this and haven't played Sherlock Holmes Chapter One by this same company, you owe yourself a treat - it's close to a masterpiece.

As a fan of this series, I have played almost all Sherlock Holmes games so far (probably just Mummy's Curse and Chapter One left) and this game is ok for me. It's a worse version of Crime and Punishment, but a better version of Testament. The Alice-Kate story was a little rush to fit with what was ended in The Testament, but the story of each different case was good. Puzzles were on the up side, as some of them are definitely harder than Crime and Punishment (I found the stealth walking in The Infamy and the carriage accident rebuilding were the hardest). Overall, it's a good game but not the best in the series. Looking forward to play Chapter One!

lars ?
lars ?

gameplay wise this was probably the best game in the series thus far, everything was more fast paced and refined, but theres many flaws to point which make this one of the skippable games for me

first off the puzzles were not nearly as fun as they were in the awakened, jack the ripper, the testament, or crimes and punishments. some of them were just an unfair drag to get through while some of them were just not puzzles at all but terribly designed forced sequences (like the man with the rifle shooting at you in the forest near the end of the first case)

that being said, i did enjoy the majority of the four cases, but the entire alice charade was kinda cheesy and felt like something out of a bad 90s horror movie, seeing moriarty back as just a voice in holmes' head was cool tho

and speaking of holmes, his character was just off here, he wasnt the way he is usually written espeically in the older games whatsoever, and one of the useless mechanics was the semi open world, just a bare empty london, people standing frozen in one place and doors that you cant enter, no side activities to do or anything

i would defo skip this one if im playing through the series, to put it simply, it didnt offer much story wise and was just not fun to get through

Good looking graphics, with beautiful scenery!
The gameplay was okay, I liked the minigames more in Crimes & Punishment (like opening locks). But the cases are all good!
Really liked the athmosphere and music of the game. What bugged me a little was, that I cannot set the audio on english and the rest of the game in german. This was possible in Crimes& Punishment. (Or I just did not find it out in the settings..)
The Story telling itself was good, the last part was a little bit to short! I would loved it if the last case would be a little bit longer!
Had some Minor bugs like game crashing once or twice, did not bother me at all.
Rating: 8/10 :)

An excellent and exciting Sherlock Holmes adventure from Frogwares.
The player is waiting for several stories that at first glance are not connected in any way - but as soon as you dig deeper, everything takes on a completely different look.
The ability to customize the character - will help create Sherlock in the form of Robert Downey Jr! Interesting and sometimes difficult puzzles are mixed with action scenes - which do not let you get bored.
Nice graphics, a large research map, achievements and collectible cards - spice it all up with a good soundtrack and you'll get Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter.
I recommend this game for purchase and passing, to all lovers of puzzles and a good story!

I don't usually write game reviews, but this game had me so disappointed I couldn't help myself.

After masterful Crimes and Punishments I really had high hopes for this one, but apparently Frogwares took all the wrong lessons from the success of the previous entry in the franchise. Few things make sense in this one - Holmes and Watson have been made much younger and edgy, but somehow still this is a direct sequel to the story of the previous games? And a reboot? At the same time? They clearly tried to make the game resemble the Guy Ritchie movies even more, but it turned out cringe more than anything else.

The amount of cases to solve has been reduced from the last game and they are not nearly as satisfying or well thought through as in C&P. The resolution is almost always painfully obvious or straight up doesn't make any sense. Important clues are being ignored when it's inconvenient (what in the hell happened with the steel statues?) and some conclusions are reached in ridiculous ways (there's a whole sequence in a South American Mayan temple, except Holmes didn't travel there but just imagined the whole thing along with puzzles and cliche action sequences inside like escaping a huge boulder Indiana Jones style. All based on seeing a miniature model of the outside of the temple. The whole thing didn't make any sense at all.)

This game was clearly intended to be more fast paced and action oriented, but the series really did not need a change of pace and the end result is just a shoehorned series of QTE's and tedious stealth segments which don't fit the atmosphere of the game at all and are a bother to go through. You get the option to skip all of them, but if you want to get achievements, play on a higher difficulty level or simply play the whole game you paid for you're for the most part stuck with them.

The advertised 'whole districts of London to explore' are for the most part just empty mazes of streets which seem lively at first with a lot of NPC's doing various tasks, but quickly lead to a realization they're all static and there is nothing to interact with except street name tags and closed doors giving generic responses. They only serve as a buffer to slow down the player getting to the next objective or as a backdrop to another inevitable action sequence. The only exception is Baker Street area which has a few references to older games and pointless mini games scattered around

The game definitely had it's moments - I enjoyed faking an exorcism or seeing the irony of Sherlock getting annoyed by Orson's ego or him quoting the original works of sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but even then it didn't really feel like a Sherlock Holmes game, more like a parody of it.

All in all the experience was highly disappointing, especially compared to the previous entry in the series. Gameplay is a huge downgrade, so is the story and the characters. Even graphics took a downturn with character models being less detailed even though they apparently upgraded to a new engine.
The new Holmes and Watson are cringeworthy and the forced in minigames are so bothersome they make the game barely playable. It really does feel like the series peaked with Crimes and Punishments.

This one didn't work. I've been binging the Sherlock Holmes series and, to put it curtly, The Devil's Daughter is the first entry where I felt relief upon finishing it, not joy. Thank god it's over.
This game's one saving grace is that the developers were -mostly- conscious of the really dumb trial and error segments that leave the player very little control or chance to use their head, and while they made the intentional decision to put these segments (and they are many, the majority of gameplay in this game) in anyway, they did allow the player to skip them. What remains is the nuisance of having to press skip over and over upon recognizing yet another reused segment, and the frustration that one isn't actually playing a game.
This game has very little to do with the rest of the series, except for The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, of which it alleges to be a sequel. However, this in no way is the same Sherlock Holmes, or the same Dr. Watson from The Testament, and can thus be safely skipped if you wish to experience the series (and enjoy it).

You play as Sherlock Holmes and are asked to solve a few mysteries. The final chapter ties all the previous cases into a nice bundle and supsenseful ending. You are supposed to interrogate people, assess their character and deduce the correct sequence of events and guilty party. Then you get to decide on their fate. Including some new game mechanics with following suspects, eavesdropping and breaking into places without getting spotted.

I played another game of this series before, so I was familiar with the game mechanics. I think that if you're new to the series you may feel like the explanation of the mechanics is a bit lacking. All in all it was a similar experience to the earlier games I played. As before I found it tricky to always come to the games 'correct' solution. I feel like, as is the case in the books, some of the deductions are based more on assumption of character than on actual facts. But still it was entertaining enough.

This is one of the games that makes me wish there was a "meh" option as a rating.

Crime and Punishment was better when it came to the cases imo but this one adds a lot of new game mechanics and also, you can walk around in the streets!! That was a really nice improvement.

But yeah, the cases were really lackluster unfortunately and it got pretty wild at the end which I'm still unsure about how much I liked it. (the last part with Alice and the cemetery if you've played it)

DO NOT buy full price!!!!!! The game would only be worth it at a discount!!!

Excellent game that I recommend.
I am glad we can skip some manoeuver like the equilibrium test that I did once but very happy to skip all other.
I was really hooked by the story and all cases. It also interesting that you can decide on the fate of a suspect without going everywhere/having all information. So be careful, you might accuse/put in jail the wrong person. Also you decide of the fate of the suspect, which is really interesting and make this game very good.
Very good game!

Acknowledgement of this review is to be rightfully credited to Korewahondes of TrueAchievements.com, the review of which has been so well written, with great depth, clarity, and such an accurate account of the entire game-play that I wish to share as a representation of my own sentiments of this game, Sherlock Holmes in The Devil's Daughter.

I would like to also mention that the game took me 22 hours to complete, with the occasional consultation of a guide which helped with some puzzles, is a welcome break from any game that is played on a regular basis.

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter takes us to late 19th century London and allows us to embody the famous detective, as well as very occasionally his acolytes Dr. Watson, young Wiggins and even dog Toby. Our protagonist takes part in 4 successive investigations, testing his senses of observation, analysis and deduction, before being propelled in spite of himself towards a more personal finale, taking the form of a 5th case slowly but surely brought to us by the transition scenes between previous ones.

The investigations are interesting and original, although sometimes a bit long. We are free to move and choose our destinations from those that are relevant in the current case. Most of the time we inspect a crime scene, we question the witnesses, we collect clues to analyse or further study in Sherlock Holmes’ house, our hints lead us to other places that we also go over with a fine-tooth comb and, one thing leading to another, we obtain elements that can be paired to draw inferences via a dedicated menu. As the investigation progresses and we discover clues, our conclusions combine, or not, and allow us to determine a culprit, who can always be condemned or absolved according to our will. It should be noted that the last screen of each case lets us know if our conclusion was good or not and we can replay the final scene changing our tune and choosing to pin another suspect.

Objectives, portraits of persons, important elements, places to visit and details about Sherlock's conversations are gathered together in a notebook and can be read any time, even during loading sequences that are due to a change of location. Indeed, these take the form of a fiacre ride allowing our detective to read, smoke the pipe and take stock of the items at his disposal. A good idea for immersion, and so is the freedom left to the player to experience the story in 1st or 3rd person.

Another good idea is the presence, or even the abundance, of various and varied mini-games within investigations. Many situations are indeed excuses to break the routine that I described above. Indiscriminately, the player is required to pick locks, play lawn bowling, restore the chronological order of several concomitant events, perform QTEs, solve puzzle-games of several types, keep his balance on a wire using the 2 sticks, reconstruct a torn letter, translate a pictograms inscription, etc. If we appreciate this variety and the willingness of developers to always surprise us by giving an action-adventure aspect to the game, we also praise the ability to press a key to simply skip the mini-games and puzzles that we do not like or that we feel too difficult or too long. Although most situations are easy to deal with, some mini-games can be frustrating and devious, such as those encountered in the Mayan pyramid and the last lock picks.

Now moving to more technical aspects of the game, the environments are detailed and the atmosphere of London in the Victorian era is well transcribed. Unfortunately, this work never really shines due to a quite dated technique. Indeed, there is some aliasing and sometimes textures appear magically moments after the beginning of a scene. Finally the loading times are also quite long, even if we can use them to make some deductions.

It remains for me to finally deal with the lifespan of the game and its achievements. It takes between 12 and 15 hours to unravel all the investigations, depending on our pace of progression and the number of mini-games actually performed. Many achievements are unlocked simply by playing the investigation cases, regardless of the conclusion reached. However, the others require to successfully complete some specific mini-games, so be careful not to skip all of them!

As a conclusion, Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter is a pleasant and accessible adventure that is worth doing. It gives little choice to the player in terms of narration but allows him to vary and customise his experience via mini-games and riddles that all can be skipped. Based on a technique that is a little fragile, it also has the good idea to introduce a personal and emotional dimension to the eponymous detective via a last investigation that goes off the beaten track.

A solid game. I very much liked the cases; there are indeed components of mystery involved and it required some careful thinking on my part. I especially liked how there's this mechanism that allows you to see which clues you tied together and how this leads to further deductions. It made me feel like a detective myself. I also really liked how there were these skills of Sherlock that contributed to the case, like you're in his head and seeing the things he'd see and thinking like him.
However, I found the link between these cases to be tenuous. They're loosely coupled to a somewhat confusing plot. I feel like it was kind of thrown together and out of the blue.
Also, there were a lot of 'minigames' or puzzles that felt unnecessary and not always relevant. At some point they got tedious, but luckily there's a skip option if you don't feel like trying it out.

Overall, a cool detective game. Unfortunately the story and 'mini-game play' were not very well-put together in my opinion, but nonetheless enjoyable for crime-solving fanatics.

The Devil's Daughter uses the same system as the Crimes and Punishments game in the series. That system is good for making a deduction game, which makes me expect the same level of deduction and puzzle solving as the last game. However, this time the plot focuses more on the action part or the execution part of the famous detective's life, which can be seen by many quick-time-events appearing in the game, which is not so much the appeal if I play a Sherlock game. The story doesn't try to make much sense either and doesn't leave so much time for the player to make conclusions of the events. Overall, The Devil's Daughter might be closer to the earlier titles in gameplay (which I didn't try, but I don't think they feature a good deduction system like Crimes and Punishments) so buy it if it suits your taste.

This game is the second great example of what Sherlock Holms games should be. I can't tell what is better: The Devil's Daughter or Crimes&Punishments. I've played them one after another and my experiences of them are blurred and mixed up. But I remember enjoying them both equally.

The visual is still charming. Locations got larger. Now you can leave your apartments to roam freely around Baker Street and some other streets too. And sceneries still give that Victorian England vibes.

TDD is a collection of 5 short cases but this time with a sort of cross-cutting plot to what the game owes its name. I'm not a fan of this plot but it was okayish enough to go through it.

If you've already played Crimes&Punishments then you know everything about gameplay. If not then go and play right now. That's an order. And good soldiers follow orders. The only thing worth adding is that there are even more action scenes in this game, two of which infuriated me: forest escape and Mayan temple (I would fire the one who designed this place). I really don't know what else to say. Searching for evidence, interrogation, chemical analysis, and mind palace are still with us as you may have expected. Sadly there's no option at the end of cases to check what other players chose.

TDD is the second-best game about our darling detective from 221B Baker Street.

Excellent. While yes, it's pretty much more of the same and does very little to innovate the series (the game basically plays exactly the same as Crimes and Punishments) but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The cases are thrilling with twists that fit perfectly with previous Holmes stories. The overarching story is an intriguing mystery with a painfully obvious twist (anyone even vaguely familiar with Doyle's stories or the various adaptations will see it coming from miles away) but it's well written enough to be engaging and at times, emotional and touching. This is Frogwares best version of Holmes yet with the player being able to define his personality (making Holmes either incapable of empathy or someone who has sympathy for those who turn to crime) and of course the moral choices at the end of each case (who is the culprit? And do you absolve them or condemn them?). Several gripes come from the overuse of puzzles (especially in a Mayan temple segment) and almost criminal underuse of Holmes' faithful ally Dr. Watson who doesn't get very much to do here. Despite this, the game is pretty fun, challenging, and a must-play for many Holmes fanatics.

RATING: 🌟🌟🌟 3/5 AVERAGE GAME

Context

I'm not into detective games at all, but I always wanted to play one of the Sherlock games, this is my first one and I had a good experience. It has both chilling investigation and tons of action moments where Sherlock proves he excels at environmental analysis, quick thinking, and chain reaction clairvoyance.

Atmosphere, Visuals and Music

It's set in 19th century industrialized London, it looks realistic and has a good vibe. Surprisingly, you will be able to visit other areas such as a Mayan temple, a cemetery, the Scotland Yard police headquarters and more. The music fades in the background and the sound effects suit the game in general.

Plot overview (spoilers free)

There are four cases to solve and one final case which is the main story about the Devil's Daughter. They are not related at all, but they have a nice narrative flow between them.

Gameplay

You can use both your intuition and your imagination to find clues and patterns. You can also play as the mighty Watson on some occasions and use his mighty abilities, like pushing a box while Sherlock watches you from a high point, which defines their relationship very well. You can also play as Toby, the stuffed dog (you'll see why), and a boy who helps Sherlock, but this only happens in the first case. It is obvious that they tried to experiment with new mechanics and I appreciate that.

One more thing I liked about it is the incredible number of realistic mini-games it has. There's also an archive where you can look up information to solve cases, and let's not forget the make-up vanity where you can disguise to sneak into prohibited areas.

Exploration

There are no collectibles and nothing missable. You can't leave an area until you find everything you need to progress. As you move from one area to another, there will be a kind of loading screen, because it is not a free roam game, that loading screen is an interactive horse carriage where you can consult your diary, notes and develop new conclusions.

Misc

    • The game was only $1/€ on Steam to boost the positive reviews.
    • Story mode took me 14 hours to complete.
    • Puzzles can be skipped if you want to focus on the story. (Not recommended.)
    • It has easy achievements that can be fully obtained by simply completing the game without skipping puzzles.

Cons

    • No replayability potential.
    • Clunky controls.
    • Annoying 12 years old emo girl from the 19th century who thirsts for Sherlock's attention.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I think it's a decent game that won't go into my favorites, but I had a lot of fun and memorable moments thanks to its innovative mechanics for a really low price, so I have to recommend it.

To buy or not to buy?

If you find it at a good price, do not hesitate to buy it. The full Triple A price they're asking is a joke, so don't be fooled.

If compared to SH Crimes and Punishments, previous game of this series SH the Devil's Daughter is a total tragedy. If you're looking for a game to play I can wholeheartedly recomend Crimes and Punishment but not this.

Norby

SH: Crimes and Punishments was a great game (save a few minor flaws). This game is a direct sequel to it but the characters ended up being a younger and "cooler" versions of themselves. Their entire personalities and dynamic with other returning characters became entirely different (Sherlock and Watson being the most painfully obvious) in a very Hollywood style macho smartass way which was a huge disappointment.

The game kept Crimes and Punishments' frame gameplay and diluted it with pointless, clunky and annoying mini-games in a failed attempt to sneak in some action sequences in a very cheap way (because running over repeatedly by a giant rolling boulder in an ancient Mayan temple is what this game needed, amiright?). By the time I have reached the third case, I found myself simply skipping these mini-games because they felt annoying to complete instead of even remotely rewarding.

The game is also full of meaninglessly large sections of London where there is nothing to actually interact with, which is a clear sign that the level designers were bored while the developers were busy with making the pointless mini games.

If I put aside the annoying character changes and the clunky mini-games, the cases themselves are interesting and luckily enough they have kept the deduction menu from Crimes and Punishments which is still great in this one and makes finding all the clues and making correct deductions rewarding enough to play on.

All in all, you should avoid this one and play Crimes and Punishments instead if you haven't already.

I'm gonna start with a few compliments about this game.... cause its all down hill from here....... The story so far, great. Some of the game-play is pretty neat, makes you feel like you're actually Sherlock.... Ok. Thats the compliments. Now, here's what I personally have to say critique wise... This game needs a manual save. Not only so you can go back and do things over (I know that kinda ruins the whole "test of the detective" thing), but for the sake of sanity and so you can take a break without needing to go to a checkpoint.... The game-play is EXHAUSTING. Never has a balancing-mini game given me ACTUAL heart palpitations. The whole gimmick with WASD and the mouse in the circles thing is, in my opinion, just... kinda awful... It isn't a "fun" thing to have to do, and games are supposed to be fun. Just cause its difficult and you can beat it does not make for good game-play; there needs to be a reason for it. The game is about being a detective, not an acrobat, so why put so much effort into a part of game-play that is only meant to be frustrating? It kills the immersion cause suddenly you're going from really creative gameplay that makes you feel like you're there... to straight up panic-mode-button-mashing out of no where for like 2 minutes straight, without a break, cause those parts for some reason ARE AGONIZINGLY SLOW.... I almost don't want to continue this game cause I don't want to either break my WASD keys and/or have a heart attack. I seriously don't want to have to do that again-- I'm really trying to be nice here, but if there's more of that in the game I am done. I will probably only ever play this if I have nothing else to do, and I will probably have others do the parts I hate (like the button mashing), cause I would just... rather not with some of this game. I guess it may just be that this is not the style of gameplay I prefer, but I just find it out of place in a game like this.

fairman2007

The gameplay is fun and engaging. You really do get to feel like a detective. It may not be perfect but they did reasonably well. There are a few places where the game gets into fantasy territory that I could do without but they do break things up so I'm ok with it.

Good job making London feel like a place you can get lost in, even small neighborhoods are fully realized enough to feel immersive.

My one biggest complaint is what when I think of Sherlock Holmes I certainly don't think of him as a family man or father-figure. To me, he's meant to be aloof and cold with a seeming detatchment from humanity except for his loyal friend Watson who 'gets' him and his brother Mycroft who he has grudging respect for or various police inspectors he formed a rival/friendship with in the pseudo-coworker sense. What I'm saying is, making him a 'daddy' to a little girl humanizes him more than he's meant to be and also pulls the focus away from his crime solving as a career.

This brings me to a pet peeve in games, movies and TV shows about fictional detectives or policemen. They always find some way to give the protagonist (or one of their loved ones) a close tie to the villain or the crime being investigated. I get that it gives the protagonist some extra motivation and sources for rich drama but it (for me) is massively immersion-breaking. The whole point is that the character solves crime as a profession (and sort of as a hobby). So let it be that. To me, it feels like a lazy device writers use, injecting personal personal emotional attachment between a professional investigator and that which is the subject of the investigation.

I would've enjoyed the game more if you cut the daughter out of the game and just gave us a random (though well written) crime to solve in the last act. Even an arch villain or crime kingpin that ties the earlier cases together. But I'm sorry the daughter drama felt completely forced and just a lazy writing device to inject drama when frankly it was the wrong "kind" of drama for a Sherlock Holmes type of character.

Solid game, I spent an entire day absorbed in it and enjoyed it. You nailed the setting and the gameplay was fun, its just the story that left me feeling a bit 'off.'

If you are looking for something that resembles LA Noire, that's not the game for you. I was expecting a detective game to be more about collecting evidence, observing details. Instead I played a game that sometimes was very annoying with all those mini games/puzzles in it that have nothing to do with detective's work. And what of detective it had, it was pretty basic. I never read Sherlock Holmes books, but from what I understand, this detective would solve complex crimes that no one else could. I played 2 cases and they were very predictable.

I can't recommend SH:TDD. I enjoyed Crimes and Punishments very much, but this game departs from the detective game and leans into the "action" game with lots of QTEs and minigames. The game as a whole also feels disjointed, like everything was created separately and then desperately glued together at the end. It's mysteries are fairly outlandish, the minigames are omnipresent and SO tedious, and there's often very little context to anything you're doing. The last scenario is called Fever Dream, and boy is it. I don't know how much of it was real or imagined, and there's again no context or epilogue to explain. Very unsatisfying ending to an overall unsatisfying game.

If you liked "Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments", you'll like ""Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter" as well. Great graphics, great score, lots of attention to detail. Very nice writing results in an immersing, suspenseful, and joyful experience.

As with "Crimes and Punishments", some may not like the level of ambiguity present in some cases. It appears that in some cases one has to make a judgement call about which scenario is more likely rather than having hard evidence against or for a certain scenario. Perhaps I've just missed some (in story) hint that allowed avoiding ambiguity (I always found all clues), but judging from discussions I've read after playing the cases, it seems there are a lot of other players who feel the same. It is not a big deal, as one can enjoy the game even if one does not always pick the official solution, but as I said in my (longer) "Crimes and Punishments" review, I believe people playing these kind of games care whether or not they've got it "right". At least, there is no longer an achievement that requires one to make the same kind of moral choice for each case as this just did not make sense with "Crimes and Punishments".

Overall, highly recommended.

I would generally recommend the game but there are also points to be aware of: 1) The game doesn`t explain much (for a first time player of this series I was pretty confused from time to time).
2) The movements and controls are a bit whacky.
3) Sometimes the pace of the game felt a bit off.
Other than that I really enjoyed it, the cases were entertaining and I thinks it is good that the game is letting players coming to a false conclusion without telling you. This makes searching for clues more rewarding.

I don't like shooter games, so the fact that these are elements of the game that CANNOT BE SKIPPED are a big thumbs down from me. It's impossible to advance without completing these sequences.
