A classic in turn-based strategy.
The graphics cannot compare to modern games or the more colourful Civilizations.
The UI is clunky, moving units can be non intuitive, giving orders can be problematic.
The game is simple in its core.
Say what you want about this game, but is an immortal classic and as soon as I turned on I was way past midnight caught in the "just one last turn".
At the end may not compare to the new games, but does it matter if you can't stop playing it?
Thumbs up forever!
It's nice going down memory lane some times. Also, every time I watch F1 and Max Verstappen wins i get the urge to play whenever they play the Dutch national antheme.
Colonization Classic has been a favorite of mine since it first came out almost 30 years ago. I still enjoy playing it once in a while. It may be nostalgia but I feel like this is one of the very best games from the DOS era.
This game is a classic! If you like strategy and colony development games, and doesn't care about old graphics, it you will certainly like this one!
WHITE MAN CAME
ACROSS THE SEA
HE BROUGHT US PAIN
AND MISERY
Used to play this on my old i486 under DOS. Good times. Still plays great to this day thanks to the pixel graphic!
From the gameplay perspective, the game is amazing and I think it's unfair Colonization "won the race" over this masterpiece. Would love to see a proper successor/remake for this!
this is a fun game to get into. can definitely lead to getting lost in the progression but still really holds up.
I played this game a ton when I was in college many moons ago. It was the first "sequel" game to the Civilization franchise ans was a worthy successor. Worth your time and money if you want a 4X game with a nostalgic feel.
My favourite nation building game of all time
Excellent turn-based strategy game. It takes days to play to completion though!!!
Game is good however please be aware it will not run on a MAC over 10.15
One of the greatest games ever made!
I played this game during my holiday on my laptop. I thought it would be fun for the nostalgia, I played the original one a lot (a LOT!) during the 90's.
The DOS version is exactly as the old one as far as I can determine (I completed one game). I am surprised how much fun it still is and I am going to install it on my regular gaming pc to play it some more!
Excellent rendition of the lead up to and final battles for American Independence. Graphics dated but that's part of the charm.
This is the most garbage game I've ever played i wouldn't recomend it to my worst enemy. 10/10
Ive played this since i was a kid, top strategy game :)
A more refined and focused version of Sid Meier's classic Civilization... there are a nearly endless number of ways to play this.
An all time favorite. Very immersive. Never spent nearly as much time on the Civ series combined as I did with this classic. Some things in the story didn't age well :) Stay critical to colonization and the exploitation and genocide it entailed - but play Colonization for what it is and enjoy.
Perfect port. If you liked the original (and you should!), then this is it. Worth it.
Its exactly what i remember. no issues at all 48hrs in.
Still awesome after all these years. If my life had a soundtrack, this music would be in it. It's just a great concept..I'd try it, f I were you. As a reviewer so wisely said before.. I've also purchased this game several times and got my money's worth every single time.
I'd only recommend this to other nostalgic gamers. The graphics are SVGA and the sound is 4 channel. The game is challenging and addictive. Sandbox game producers should use this as a benchmark because few come close.
Plays just like the classic game i remember from the 90's
Classics never die. Though might be challenging for a young generation due to pixel grafic.
Stands the test of time. Although FreeCol overtook it technically years ago, there's something special about the original.
Colonization is one of the greatest games ever made. I had the original back in the 90s and I still play this game A LOT. However, as other reviewers have said, this remake doesn't replicate the combat mechanics of the original, which detracts hugely from the game. Buy this game on GOG - they have a version which is faithful to the original
A classic game - played first time when I was 6 years old, still playing
An oldie but goodie. I remember the graphics were great for its time, and they still do what they need to do. Great gameplay never goes out of style.
the best old school PC game! Game play still holds up and the old school graphics are still great
It gives an understanding of how colonization of the New World looked like.
Great old school vibes with this game.
From back when 4x was a relatively unique genre, this game allows you to re-colonize the new world with one of Four Nations.
Various strategies allow you to go about dominating the New World in your own particular way, and if you've brave enough, you can declare Independence from your Mother Nation and try to establish yourself as a fledgling state on the other side of the Atlantic.
Great game, lots of great memories of my youth playing this.
This was the first real game that I ever fell in love with. The challenge of keeping the natives happy (or pillaging them), what/when to fight for taxation with the king, selecting your leadership, balancing protection with financial gains. Lots of different buildings, skills, terrain bonuses, to learn and master. While the graphics may not have been the best back then, there was a lot of love and care put into this game.
A classic game from my childhood.
A true classic and so much fun.
Classic game. Interesting theme. It's midi soundtrack is the best ever released.
If you want the old school game that doesn't pull punches or anything, this is the game for you.
I played this game for hours and hours growing up, and now at 34, have stumbled upon it again and find it just as entertaining. It's worth it for the nostalgia value alone, but it is also a fun little game. Can run on even the most junker computers, so there's that too. It's Civilization's little forgotten brother (perhaps more neglected even than Pirates!)...and it is time for it to come into the spotlight.
Game is fun as hell even though it's old. Has a great population management system.
Well this is a great vintage game i used to play on my old 486DX2 80 mhz pc.
Realy love the gameplay and it is just how i remembered playing for hours. And even though there are 3d 4k games out there i preffer this because of it's sentiment. Good games don't die off that easy.
Aa REAL classic, it just gets better and better
Classic. What more needs to be said. Game holds up and was my first PC game back in the day. Cannot go wrong.
I played this game for 1 trillion hours during my youth! It is a real pleasure to revisit the game. Emulator is working fine.
true sid meier classic full of hours of great fun being the colonial master that subjugates natives through imperialism and religion, as well as wrecking the environment for resources.
thankfully this is a game so it's totally appropriate.
the resolution and controls are kinda dated, but generally would still recommend, especially if its on discount.
Great classic - everything you like about Sid Meier games.
This brings back memories. May be a bit outdated for some who are too used to the high speed and graphics of today's games. If you want to see an example of one of the computer games made during the beginning when computer games took off, it never hurts to look at what can be considered one of the classics in the history of computer games.
You just don't see many strategy games that give such depth with so few systems.
Now this, this is a classic. This is what people grew up with at the dawn of games becoming more than just a passing fad.
This game itself might not have paved the way for what we play today, but it certainly was a part of that time.
If you are interested in games from that period, as a sort of historical object, I'd say go ahead and buy it (and maybe even play it?)
Obviously, this is a game with dated design, but you can clearly see many of the things that either became standard in later games of the same type, or would eventually develop into such things.
Keep in mind that this is the colonization of the North American territories (even if you play in a different map), and it does follow the history fairly closely. Your taxes will rise due to the wars back in the old world, and you are meant to eventually secede from your mother country even if that is not what you want to do.
At the same time, you will end up in conflict with the natives, even if you strive to avoid it as much as possible.
Simply put, don't expect to rewrite history in any major way.
Grand classique contient déjà en germe les bons ingrédients de civilization.
basic game , but very playable
This classic game does not lose it's appeal even after all these decades. I enjoyed this game when it first came out and the only complaint I have about it now is the same one I had when it first came out. You should be able to stack units and command them all at one time. If you tell a treasure wagon to GO to the nearest colony and then tell the soldier stacked on top of it to go to the same colony, there are times they will take different routes, leaving the treasure wagon vulnerable to indian/european attack. Other than that it is an amazing game for its time.
Without doubt one of the best games ever made!!!
This is a gem and I keep coming back to this game at least once a year. Wonderful experience
Good game. Older graphics and functionality but easy to learn and challenging without being impossible.
This was my one of my favourite games when i was a teenager. Is great to go back to it after 27 years.
I've loved this game since I was a kid, back in the day where the computer would take 10 minutes to start up and make a thousand painful noises in the process. Colonization is historically informative, which for me is excellent because I am a huge history buff, my favourite thing is the personalization, naming my character, naming the new world, naming new cities. I wish more games of all genres would allow this control and customization. Definitely adds to immersion which is always a big problem in gaming longevity
The games is simple and relaxing.
I've always loved this game - it's a classic I played when it first came out back in 1994...now it's on Steam, I'm playing it for novelty value. Obviously newer games are more involved and have better graphics, but this takes me back to those earlier days!
As good as it gets. It's the DOOM of turn based strategy games.
Great Game! Almost just like the origionl! 9/10 would suggest, dont like the lack of demotion (Enemy demotes but if you get killed you dont demote you just get deleted
)
"Almost" good enough to enjoy, but you get really stupid results, sometimes... no zone of control, on land, for example, so you can't box out enemy units from your land. It leaves enemy units spammed all over your own cities, even during PEACETIME... And you can't even kill a single enemy unit, with a huge city garrison, once they fortify around your city... meanwhile, you can fortify a "large cannon" in your city... it took a long time to build... but a #$%king non-veteran infantry attack kills it, despite the odds saying it can't. You can lose buildings to an enemy attack, even inside a walled city, fully garrisoned with infantry and cannon. Okay... it is an old game, from before they had so many other examples. It could be cool if they made a fun/sophisticated version of this, today... Ofc, good luck, now that everything is all about wokeness. Just see what they would do the tone of the game, even beyond this.
Great game from my childhood. The building blocks of the Civilization series are embedded in this game. Love the Founding Father bonuses.
Fun game even if it's really old. I like the more complex economic portion of it that many games like Civilization have.
I hope someday they remake the graphics, with the same gameplay. This game is instantly captivating, from the opening introduction. The music is beautiful and amazing for it's time. The graphics while they are dated are lovely. The gameplay is fantastic and game designers of the past were geniuses in that they managed to get such a timeless classic, despite the constraints and hardware of the day.
I love this game. Hope that remake of it comes soon.
This really didnt age well. The only thing I can really praise is the music. Sadly the gameplay is really cluniky and the controls are stright up awful.
Help me i'm a stupid whippersnapper who doesn't know how to play this game.
This game, along with Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Civilization VI, is one of my three favorite Civilization games, including Test of Time and the Call to Power Games.
still one of the best TBS games ever made
Excellent game design and balance - Sid Meier is the game design GOAT.
While the graphics and effects of this classic game can't compare to modern games it is still enjoyable decades later.
For me at least this is a definite blast from the past. It still manages to distort time now as it did then. The mood music, the ambient sound effects and the detailed graphics all were state of the art for it's time (says with a smile and a wink) Thanks for bringing it back as I so fondly remember it.
I used to plat this game all the time when I was underway on the submarine. Ah, the good old days. Poking holes through the north Atlantic, playing Colonization, cleaning the bilges.
used to play this on my old commodore amiga in the 90's loved it then and still do.
A classic that stood the test of time!
Sid Meier designed the Civ games, and if you think of this as the prototype game for that it is best. It is nostalgic for me and might be fun as a retro game experience for others. The game play is balanced and the empire building is entertaining. The graphics leave something to be improved on... and they did.
Oldie but goldie. Ever wondered what Civ and co looked like in their baby shoes? This is it. Now I only need to find a way to mod this.
The absolute BEST version of this game. CLASSIC!
If you like Civilization, you will like this.
this game start your adventure with strategy games it's an easy one great starting game for strategy games
Coming out just over half my lifetime ago, this classic game echoes everything that was great about the Personal Computer revolution.
Original, good gameplay, graphics that are good enough to understand without needing imagination or high end GPUs. Just an all round excellent game that isn't too hard to get the hang of and good for hours and hours of gameplay.
I had it then in 1994, and I've come back to it.
If it's got an old-timer coming back to play it, it's worth getting.
IT'S FUN AND I'VE PLAYED IT SINCE I WAS A KID
graphics are completely unplayable
