I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to skateboarding games, so my frustration tolerance for the gameplay itself is likely fairly low, but the game as a whole just feels unpolished. The visuals look outdated, the UI is bad, the gameplay is clunky. The fact that it's an indie game is somewhat of an excuse, but still doesn't improve the quality. Feels a bit like Goat Simulator, but without the self-irony.

Visuals: SkateBIRD looks more like a game released in 2011 than in 2021 - which would be forgivable if at least the birds looked good, but they don't. There are 20 or so bird species to choose from, but most of them are just reskins of a small number of models, and the models themselves are average at best.
Same for the animations, which are limited. If you fall off your skateboard, the bird just... rolls over the floor like a stiff plushie, occasionally flapping its wings until you press the reset button. Yes, it's an indie game, but come on, at least give the bird a functioning spine. Clipping is also an issue, e.g. when you're creating your bird and choose the paint job for the skateboard, the bird's feet clip through the board quite visibly.

UI: Looks overall pretty patched-up. Pop-ups that can't be clicked away, mismatched fonts, bright colors and a confusing menu guidance combine into a quite awkward UI.

Gameplay: I can't really draw a comparison to other skateboarding games since I've barely played any, but for me as a beginner it wasn't exactly fun. There's no tutorial, I got a tool tip on how to do an ollie, after that I was pretty much on my own. Tried to do a quest where I had to find... something, somewhere. Aimlessly traversed the room, unsuccessfully tried to do some tricks, ran out of time, and didn't see a reason to try again.

skateBIRD is a lot easier than typing out a review on a steam deck!

skateBIRD brings back fond memories of playing micro machines on the sega mega drive/genesis. the graphics and physical movements of the bird are quite impressive and more so given this is the steam deck and not my gaming laptop, and juging from past reviews the developer has worked so hard on this game.

control of your bird is not quite as fluid or reactive-the controls are a little bit dodgy but other than that if you love birds and skating games this one will fit the 'bill'.

Skatebird is a skateboarding game about birds who just want their Big Friend to come home and to stop being sad.

That aside, the gameplay is fun, the amount of dress up accessories is ridiculously fun and lets you build the coolest bird possible, but where the game really shines is its soundtrack. The original songs are catchy (The Heron, anyone?). However, there is an impressively large collection of Halloweenish ska/punk on the soundtrack that I just...didn't know existed. Ever.

Worth it. The game is worth it. It's fun birds with a fun soundtrack that are skating to try to bring their big friend home.

Oh and there's a setting to decide how "birb" the dialogue is, which is a plus.

Fallen Tenshi
Fallen Tenshi

Borb.

SkateBird can almost be carried alone by getting to play as a bird on a skateboard, and the amount of funky birds available. It's then helped along by some nice silly friends to get you out there.

As a skateboarding game however the gameplay is not as great as it could be. While I recognise you do play as a smol birb, everything is a little more floaty than memories of Tony Hawk suggest. Any time there is a jump it is difficult to read whether you will actually make said jump, or control from grind to landing.
The audio/visual feedback design is missing something to make things pop. No noises when you perform certain moves or get high combos.
While you do have birb friends asking you to do silly tricks and be true to the call for seeds, SkateBird is also missing some of the exploration that existed. Being asked to collect all the letters to spell SKATE is less interesting when they only appear in a very close cluster specifically when someone asks you to collect them.

The latter points suggest every skate game has to be Tony Hawk Pro Skater, SkateBird does specifically seem to be trying to pull some of the same vibe to encourage comparison.
All the same, I have bailed off my board and must screm; but I looked pretty sweet doing those tricks.

A cute game, but it falls a little short of being a good game. It's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, but with birds on Tech Decks. It's issues arise when actually playing the game, it just feels off. While I didn't play a ton of different THPS games, I did play quite a bit of the first one on N64, and that still holds up better than this game. The wonky physics is the biggest issue. THPS games didn't have the most realistic physics, but it gave a great sense of weight and momentum while riding around and doing tricks. SkateBird just feels off, it's doesn't feel right, there's clipping issues which add to that feeling, it seems like the devs really love the THPS games but couldn't quite pin down what made them feel good, and the result is something that resembles a THPS game at it's core, but can't keep it together, and it just ends up falling flat.

It is a very good game. I think you just need to add the steam cloud.
I finished it 100% a few months ago but lost my save files. So if I want to get the new 2 achievements I need to play it completely again.

It's a bit janky and relatively short, but overall I had fun. Controls feel nice, plenty of customization options, great soundtrack. Would have been nice if some things were explained better, like how you can fill the fancy meter with up/down+X and B.

edit: they added an among us crossover. 100/10

honestly great game funny dialouge and everything btu here are the problems the timers on certain missions are super short plus on the roof top level i had a lot of trouble with some of those levels because of the timer. what i would like to see a multiplayer and a skatepark creator then the game would be amazing.

Snoozie

The game doesn't exactly feel the smoothest to play, getting to where you need to go for certain missions is very tedious or unintuitive with how the game controls, and the game feels like it's trying really hard to be funny with it's dialogue but it just falls flat.
But despite all that it's still fun and cute and I like just playing as a bird skating around, but I'm not gonna get much more play time out of this game.
it's a recommendation but like only if you like silly looking birds on tiny skateboards really. I've never played a tony hawk game or a skate game, but I know they are far better skateboard games for your money where you can get them than this.
This game is more of just a "I like video games, i like those photos of silly birds on tech decks. I like skateboarding. This looks fun"
and it doesn't go any farther than that really.
Pick it up on sale or if you have nothing really to do.

I cant tell you how much fun this game is to just beat and to go even farther and 100% like i did is SO worth it and i would recommend doing it :] and if you have refunded the game please buy it again its only getting better with each patch, so i will say please from the bottom of my heart but this game. Good music, good skating, can pet the birb. My birb is an owl in a top hat and scarf.

Pros:
Many birb to pick from and do skate stuff for
Can play as owl
Can dress birb up in hats and things
Can pet the birb
Good soundtrack of birb related songs
Great soundtrack of non birb-related songs including stuff by We are the union

Cons:
Grinding on rails/wires/edges etc is just as frustrating as it was back in the day playing THPS3 & 4, and I still suck at it.

This game has birbs, skateboards, and a wild soundtrack. Follow the adventures of your birb as you attempt to get your big friend out of work by doing sick tricks. Collecting all of the collectibles can be frustrating at times but it is worth it to make your birb friend look cute. The cheat codes for the game are very fun I recommend the one that makes you go as fast as possible instantly.
Overall the game is fun and really cute but it has a few issues. Controller support doesn't work on Mac and the physics don't always work the way you want or expect them to which makes some missions insanely frustrating due to the tight time limits. This makes the game a little rough but it is insanely fun and the developers are really nice!

It's got a great soundtrack featuring artists like We Are The Union, Grave Danger and Holy Wow.

A unique creative cute skate board rpg game for those who love casual indie adventures involving skilled skateboarding tricks and cool birbs. This game really takes some practice time and isnt mindlessly auto-streamlined so it does require mastering of techniques and game controls, and requires a little skateboarding intuition. The only thing I wish I'd noticed was the yellow dots on the map found in the pause menu and the yellow bird compass to guide you to where the mission/objects are in quests. Once you start to understand all the controls the learning curve becomes worth the slow beginning. Sharp turns can be done with the trigger buttons to help you dodge tight turns and gain speed on the quarter pipes.

I really like birds + I played a lot of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. This game is basically both things mashed together, and damn is it good.

At first, it took some getting used to the controls, I was doing really weird stuff and falling off the board constantly. The tutorials helped me get the hang of it more, though. You learn to grind, grab, transfer and do tricks.

PROS:
+ The gameplay is good and feels like a Tony Hawk game (the game even making subtle nods to the Tony Hawk games, like the SKATE letters), many missions and cute birb friends to meet.
+ You can screm and monch your board.
+ There is a bell hat, I used to have a budgie who loved to put his head inside of a bell so that's absolutely perfect.
+ Flapping your wings is like Tony Hawk with super powers, it's a cool addition to the skating.
+ Creative level design

CONS:
- High contrast isn't actually high contrast as it's white on white text now, with a subtle black border. Ideally the text in dialogs would be completely black, with a white background.
- Bird models are somewhat unique, but they don't reflect how the birds actually look. This is probably a trade-off to make balancing the gameplay more stable during development as the collision hulls for the birds now remain the same. But it results in budgies & cockatiels looking just as thick & round as any other bird.

Yes, those are minor complaints, I actually really like this game. It's fun to play and filled with content for you to enjoy.

Finished the story and that's probably all I'll be doing until more patches roll out.

I looked forward to this game a lot while it was in development. It had a ton of charm to it and I definitely knew the game was gonna be of the goofy kind watching the trailers and playing the beta, so I didn't expect tight controls and extreme replayability like Tony Hawk, more so a parody/love letter to that franchise.

*But Jesus Christ*

I'd say it took me about 2 hours of gameplay until I had every accessibility option turned all the way up to make the countless inexplicable bails and combo breaks a little less unbearable (100%ed every tony hawk game on playstation 1 and 2 by the way, its definitely not that i'm bad at skating games).
My main gripes were:
-combos ending after ollie'ing out of a manual, with the total score becoming null and void.
-your character tripping over seemingly nothing all the time
-some ramps don't launch you all the way up, causing you to exit the bowl/halfpipe involuntarily or crashing into the wall
behind the ramp
-lots of bothersome invisible walls in the later levels

It's not all bad though, the game has some fun things going for it:
-Character customization is very fun with tons of bird species and accessories obtainable in the various maps
-The maps themselves have some fun theming, especially the manmade mini skateparks in indoor levels.
-The NPCs are really charming and the dialogue is fun.

So far the negatives still outweigh the positives though. I see a lot of reviews of people who played less than an hour that just go "hell yea birds" which I mean, valid opinion, but the fact that only 5% of people have the achievement for beating the story speaks volumes.

DJKiske
DJKiske

Really fun and quirky game. It has its problems yes, the physics can be a bit inconsistent at times and I feel like the controls need a rework (I like playing with the DPad for Tony Hawk's clones). That said, the dialogue is hilarious and I had a great time playing it on my stream. I recommend it to anyone for a fun game about skateboarding birbs

I really really hate to give this a No, but I'm in the middle with this game - leaning a bit soundly on No. I'm a long-time player of Tony Hawk and other skateboarding games and, while I really love the concept and overall aesthetic - the gameplay is total trash.

On the good side, I love this game's sense of humor, writing, and soundtrack. Every part of the presentation is charming and gives the kind of semi-serious, semi-silly whimsy you would see in Katamari Damacy (but with birds on boards). Customization options for your little buddy are also extensive and allow you to pick from an impressive number of bird species. You can tell that the developer had a fun concept and decided to run with it as far as it could go.

...however, that's where the good parts end.

As I said before, I've played a lot of skateboarding games in the past - both good and bad - but this one overwhelmingly takes the cake for worst gameplay in a skateboarding game. While I could write quite the long list about what's going wrong, I'll summarize the worst points:

-Stalls vs. Grinds
The game never seems to know the difference between making you do a stall or a grind. Even when you go high-speed at an angle to the lip (which would be a grind in any other skateboarding game), you're stopped dead in your tracks doing a stall which messes up the entire combo.

-Ollies
Ollies in this game try to be clever by including a double jump (since you're a bird and can fly), but jumping as a whole is so terrible that this mechanic works against you more than for you. I can't count how many times I try to ollie up to a very low rail, only to be bounced off in the opposite direction for...reasons. I can't explain why.

-Speed
Speed works very differently in this game. The logic is incomprehensible. I can jump full speed ahead at a platform and suddenly my bird loses so much momentum so quickly that it looks like I hit a floating mass of molasses that slowed me to a crawl. On the ground, things are not much better. You're fighting against the game to get enough speed to go up a halfpipe and, more often than not, you slowly but surely slide down without ever having reached the top.

-Transfers
Transferring in this game is comically bad. When trying to transfer out of a halfpipe, the game seems to randomly accept this request and, worse yet, may actually bounce you off in the complete opposite direction when you are trying to transfer forward up to a platform. This probably ties into how broken the ollie system is, but that's something I can only speculate. This problem means that trying to exit a halfpipe, or even doing a spine transfer (which has its own issues being too iffy/random) is a gamble. What's even more mystifying is that transferring out of a pipe takes an actual dedicated button press (RB) instead of hitting the ollie button while holding up.

The only saving grace are the accessibility options that allow you to, among other things, turn off the timers for goals. I swear, if I couldn't turn off the timers this game would be the skateboarding contemporary of Superman 64. At the end of the day, with the gameplay, I am somehow a little impressed this could be made so poorly. I know there's the reasoning that this is a bird on a board and we can't expect much from that - but it feels like the developer forgot to make the skateboarding fun.

Overall, have your expectations incredibly low for this game. With its combination of horrible physics and a heaping dose of charm on top of an interesting concept - think of this like the Goat Simulator of skateboarding games. If that doesn't sound appealing to you, then it's completely understandable to pass on this one.

LocalMadman
LocalMadman

It took me 7 hours to get everything done. All achievements done. Everything collected. All in 7 hours.

And you know what?

I had a good time.
Probably come back to the game every once in a while to do some sicc triccs and somehow end up somewhere I didn't expect to be.

Pros: cool skate boarding game. Customization that I loved and hadn't changed. Sweet 2nes

Cons: The Fancy meter is misleading, should be a SPEED Meter. Also frustrating to move around when the movements are dead stop and skate boarding a-la Tony Hawk's Pro Skater so you'll find yourself trying to jump at the right angle to get to the place you want to go. I WANT TO DO A 900 TWIST DANG IT! Flips aren't added to the points and combos despite them accidently looking cool.

8.9/10 would leave the nest again

Melchiah
Melchiah

If you go to the game's website, you will notice it says: "Skate to an original low-fi birb-hop soundtrack - or drop in your own mp3s!"; I tried just that after getting tired of the heron documentary on the background and it never picked up the songs I put on SkateBIRD\SkateBIRD_Data\StreamingAssets, and so the best I could do on that regard was turn all the way down the game's music and load spotify on the background.

The gameplay feels quite floaty and I swear I've had so many times where a half pipe would somehow made me crash with something, because my bird would not align to fall back into the half pipe, but instead to land on the floor which would ruin my tricks. There's also details like Manuals and Grinds having a vertical gauge both, instead of Grinds having it horizontally, the fact the game doesn't seem to know what momentum is since you build speed by filling a "fancy" meter, and then your speed just stays the same until you lose said meter.

The reason I'm not recommending it is cause I feel it's more of a goat simulator than a skating game, you're there basically for the adventure and the sillyness, not the crazy tricks and acrobatics; it's fine to chill and have a good time, just... not my thing.

Cute concept with some potential that ultimately falls very short in execution. So I bought this around the time it came out on steam here. Then shortly after I bought it, like a week later it felt like, it went free on game pass. So I played it on game pass on my original version xbox one, and it played terribly. Was super janky, laggy, and not fun. Why do I recommend it? Because I later decided to play the copy I bought on PC and the PC version ran fantastically on my laptop. Game is really well optimized and fun to play on PC, even on my laptop that doesn't run many modern games too well (I know my og xbox one runs halo infinite better than my laptop). Definitely recommend buying this game on PC.

Lots of fun birbs, lots of personality, fun little things you can do beyond skating such as petting your lil birb. It may not seem like there is a lot to it when you start playing, but there is so much more to it than meets the eye. Tons more customization options unlock as you complete the game. Lots of great music in both the skate and bird genres (yes, bird music is now a genre) of music. Graphics are great, I personally love the design and character of this game. Really fun skating game too. If you're a fan of skating games such as Tony Hawk, or just like unique fun indie games, this is a game worth getting!

GOD YES I RECOMMEND THIS IT'S BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I HAVE. The controls are a bit off but not by too much that it ruins the gameplay, overall I really like this game and you should buy it.
