Lovely game

This game deserves to be spoken about in the same conversations as Abzu and Journey.

With the added bonus that you get to play as a cute as heck little fox.

Great game. 10/10

Runs flawlessly on deck.

I would definitely recommend this game. I had a great time playing it although I would get it on sale.

Nothing happens really.
Tedious boring gameplay,
Very few things to interact with.
No map or clear way of where to go and easy to get lost.
Looks alright but not too interesting.

I can recommend to not buy or play this unless you like the above things a lot.

As someone who enjoys indie games this one was such a thrill to play. Especially on stream. If you have the opportunity to play I suggest you do so!

Great "movie" type of game, no real challenges, aside from the collectibles, I suppose, very aesthetic.

The one negative I can give this game is what you need to do for the "Kindred Spirits" achievement, if you're looking to 100% it. It's a bit of a hard-to-find one and for me at least required a guide video.
Aside from that, I can't complain at all.

This game, its scenery, and the message it sends are beautiful and very well made. Some mechanics such as jumping onto something while standing still can be improved, but overall it's a great experience. The game is a bit on the shorter side unless you're going for full completion, but it's still fun regardless.

i don't see what people like about this game

from the trailer i thought this was gonna be an open world game maybe like a choose your own path kind of deal and it's kind of sort of slightly an open world game but it's also a walking simulator with some puzzle elements sprinkled sparingly on top of it

and it's a SNOOZE FEST alright

it also has zero world building you're just thrown into this world and you get no context as to what's happening around you nothing is established

i want to know where the red smog thing came from i wanna know what happened to these people why were foxes so important to these people but no i don't know anything

hell for all i care the red smog goopy thing could just be a guy named fred who really hated the color blue

this is just a game for you to go mmmm pretty colors in responce to that's it that's the game it's like "nintendo hire this man" all over again putting pretty models into a pretty landscape with pretty lighting doesn't make it a good game

after chapter 4 i just gave up and watched the rest of the chapters aaaaand yup it's still a walking simulator

and the ending isn't satisfying in the slightest it literally just destroys what you assume is the problem

they destroy the red smog goopy thing and that's it nothing else happens there's no pay-off

no reactions from the foxes no reactions from the shamans no new fauna sprouting out it's literally just the sky was red and now it's blue the end

it's like watching a movie with absolutely zero world building a protagonist and one guy who we assume is the bad guy because it's the only other guy in the movie

oh also the movie ends on his dead corpse roll credits

the game wants you to explore but then also punishes you for exploring because if the thing you wanted to try/check out doesn't turn out to be what the game wanted you to do then you're gonna spend the next 30 seconds waddling your way back to where you were

also they for some reason make you do platforming sections which i don't get in the slightest since the jumping physics in this game makes me wanna peel my skin off

and yeah you have to waddle around if you miss a jump too

you also only save between chapters so you can't just stop playing whenever you want you have to complete the chapter or else all of the progress you've made in that chapter is erased

is it gorgeous? hell yeah it is
is the OST amazing? well of course
but at the end of the day is that enough to make a game good?

and i'm not saying any of this because "wehhh slow paced game bad" this is coming from someone with over 500 hours in animal crossing

i just want some goddamn substance and i'm not getting it

Journey with foxes and a Nordic theme. I like Journey and I like foxes so thumbs up from me. Graphics starting to look a little dated.

The animation is terrible, the gameplay is boring and it doesn't even have an interesting story line. I would not recommend this game to anyone. It's a waste of time and money.

I have played many great games in the past, but Spirit of the North takes the cake. The visuals are gorgeous, the soundtracks are touching and wonderful, and the story is beautiful. No other game made me cry as much as Spirit of the North did.

I already played it on PS4 last year, but I couldn't help it. I had to get it on PC too.

Highly recommended for everyone, for all ages.

I really REALLY wanted to like this game. There were some interesting concepts but sadly it fell short in a lot of ways. The story was nonexistent. 98% of the game was just running... The other 2% involves super janky platforming and terrible, repetitive puzzles. The soundtrack and the aesthetics were beautiful but the lack of a story, poor controls, terrible keybinds, saves not being synced with Steam Cloud, and little to no content really ruined the experience for me. If you're still interested in checking out the game, then I would suggest buying it on sale.

The puzzles aren't hard, the atmosphere is beautiful, the story line is wordless and moving. I will play it again and again.

Spirit of the North is, in my opinion, a very enjoyable game. It has its ups and downs, but overall it was pretty well done. Now prepare for a long review and an interesting ending (spoiler alert—I gave my interpretation of the storyline!)

I bought and played this game on PC, so I can only describe how well the controls work with a keyboard (and I've heard some negative reviews about the game with a controller). But for a keyboard, it's very smooth. The controls are easy to learn: regular movement keys of course; both mouse buttons are used for certain actions within the game, at which point a prompt will appear on the screen to tell you what to use; and a few keys for special abilities. The movement is clean and responsive.

Most of the gameplay is pretty simple. You play as a red fox who is aided by a spirit fox, and then journey with your new friend to save a world plagued by a strange scarlet disease. You must find glowing blue flowers to obtain spiritual energy, and use that energy to solve puzzles, open new areas, and unlock special abilities. As you do so, you can occasionally find hidden staffs, which you can pick up and carry, and when you near the staff's owner, the blue gem glows and sparks. You place the staff beside a robed skeleton and its spirit rises to give you a respectful bow before disappearing. Throughout your adventures, you find many of these spirits, and can free them if you choose (it's actually optional—the staffs and their owners are hidden everywhere, and it's kind of an extra side mission to free them).

The music is phenomenal. It's beautiful, haunting, melancholic, and sometimes a bit eerie. There are a few times where it's a bit weird though, like you move a few steps in one direction and the music abruptly changes, and then you move back and it changes again. And sometimes it doesn't quite match your environment, or it gets you hyped up for the wrong reason. For example, it can be slow and creepy, and gradually rise and intensify, building suspense, and it finally crescendos when you reach whatever it is you've been walking toward—and there's nothing to justify the terrifying music. Often there's nothing there at all. But aside from that, it's wonderful music.

Now for some of the negative bits. A few of the puzzles can be frustrating. Sometimes you've got to get the timing just right, or jump from the exact perfect spot in order to reach your goal. Sometimes you have no idea where to go, because the terrain doesn't always have a clear path. Often the actual path is hidden or obscured, and you have to go searching for it. Sometimes you go the total wrong way and have to find your way back. And don't get me started on the water and swimming mechanics. One, the swimming is incredibly slow. Two, when you come out of the water and onto land, even if it's just a tiny sliver of land, you must wait five or six seconds for your fox to shake the water out of its fur. At first, yeah, that's a cool animation, but when you're trying to make that one jump puzzle and keep falling into the water, it gets annoying. And there's another thing. Towards the final chapters of the game, when previously it was optional, freeing the robed spirits becomes necessary to progress. I didn't exactly mind this, since I'd been trying to free as many as I could anyway, but it would've been nice to give more of a heads-up for those who might not really care.

So yeah, there are a few things about the gameplay that I don't exactly like, but boy, the graphics are absolutely gorgeous. The landscape is a beautiful replica of Iceland, with its rocky, icy mountains; dark, mysterious caves; large, grassy plains; flowing rivers and sapphire lakes; and the wind ruffling your fur and swaying the grass wherever you go. As you travel through the world, you come across several crumbling structures, stone houses and towers, even a few of what seem to be villages. These structures are where a lot of the puzzles take place, and where there are many robed spirits to be freed.

And now, for the final part. The story.

The storyline is, admittedly, a bit hard to follow. There is no dialogue, no narrator, nothing to explain what's really happening. It's kind of up to you to figure it out. There are vague murals, carvings on the runestones, and symbols everywhere, but it's still rather difficult to understand. The easy bit is this: a strange, terrible disease has swept over the land, manifesting as bulbous plant-like things that spew red spores everywhere, leaving a scarlet trail in the sky. You, a red fox, have partnered with a spirit fox (the "Spirit of the North") to try and save the ravaged land. After that, it gets confusing. I have tried my best to interpret from what I gathered from the runestones and murals, and what I didn't know, I filled in myself. So I have built a story that hopefully makes sense for this game:

file:///C:/Users/naomi.LAPTOP-0GH7QA42/Downloads/Just%20a%20Fan's%20Version%20of%20the%20SotN%20Storyline.pdf

If that link worked (hopefully it did) and you managed to read the entire storyline, I congratulate you. I also hope that the storyline makes sense to you. Honestly, I just played the whole game and then wrote the entire thing afterwards. I really like how it turned out. Now, I'm not sure how true it is, or how correct the details are, or how much of it is what the developers were going for. But really, I searched for like 20 minutes all over the internet and couldn't find a single thing that truly explained the storyline of this game. So I decided I'd write my own based on the pieces I could fit together, and whatever blanks there were, I'd fill them in myself. And I think it's a pretty good story, even if it isn't exact to the game.

If the link didn't work and you couldn't read it, sorry. Maybe you could download the game and play it, and then see what storyline YOU might be able to think up! It's all in the imagination. Try it out!

Despite its difficulties and annoyances, this game is pretty great, and I totally recommend it. It's a lot of fun and super relaxing. Thanks a lot for reading this far and I hope you enjoy your day.

A charming little game, 4 hrs total to finish. Very nice soundtrack, not challenging with some easy puzzle elements and a chill atmosphere. Worth spending an afternoon/night to run through it in one sitting.

Tassimmo

Amazing graphics and a cute fox. The riddles are rather easy to understand, so perfect for anyone just looking for a chilling experience.

Unfortunately, that's all this game has to offer. As beautiful as the different areas look, they are just so empty with nothing to find in them. The smaller areas were good to navigate, but the extremely big areas are just big for no apparent reason, most of the time nothing is hidden there and it's just plain boring trying to explore the areas.
And as you are wandering as the title-giving Spirit of the North, the areas mostly consist of Rocks, Stones, Snow and Grass. Fitting for the game's premise (and looking amazing), but rather boring after some time.

Hello everyone! ^^ I played the game until the end. And the visuals are amazing. Very beautiful. Has the smallest details. The story is ... wow! Much mixed emotions from being happy to sad..to being scared. The game is wow. I recommend this game for people who loves animals and play as a fox :D they are cute animals!

I made some screenshots and I will add them on my website next month (november 2022).

I have been enjoying this game, however there is just one main issue that I so happen to keep running into. Since there's no press button to respawn, I keep getting stuck on areas where the game doesn't intend you to be stuck at. I've hit four so far. I really want to recommend this game but every time I have to reset my progress because I get stuck somewhere, it's infuriating.

A walk-and-riddle game with a cute fox, a relaxing soundtrack, and a story that can be rather emotional, even though it is being transported without a single spoken or written word.

A clear purchasing recommendation when the game is on sale.

This game needs more time in the oven. The main flaw is the jumping/physics. When you get further along in the game then it becomes a major problem. You can't tell where you need to jump and you keep getting stuck on ledges. It makes the game simply unplayable. Then the game forgot that I had unlocked dash and prevented me from progressing. It's not worth getting unless these things are fixed. And it doesn't look the developers are working on it anymore. This game would be nice if they baked it a little longer, but as it stands right now, it's just not worth playing.

borc

I wanted to like this game and in the beginning it was hard not to with the level of charm they had going for themselves. But the game becomes rather directionless, not just in terms of moving forward but the story. I couldn't tell you why things were happening other than red is bad and blue is good. There were some pretty landscapes to be found but the fur on fox moves about in a really off putting way. I feel like if the whole experience had been reduced to an hour maybe I could recommend this but so much endless running forward with "puzzles" that were just a button press to solve made the whole thing drag.

The story and scenery is wonderful. Though I've encountered one minor bug, but that didn't ruin the experience that much. 8/10

I'm completely obsessed with foxes so I thought this is the perfect game for me. After playing Stray my hopes for this were high and I was pretty excited to play as a fox. I got to admit that this game feels unfinished throughout. The physics/mechanics feel pretty unrealistic, the levels that I played felt very boring and way too easy. It does have some potential tho and if they bring in more diverse levels/puzzles and improve the gameplay overall I might change my mind.

Moonshadow42
Moonshadow42

A very pleasant game with nice graphics, good music and intriguing story. The only issue I have with this game is the controls. Most of the time the fox is fine, but when jumping they tend to bug out. If you're too close to the ledge you want to jump up, the fox will refuse to jump up AND forward. Sprinting causes an unnecessary delay in jumping, causing you to fall. You have NO control over the fox when its airborne, making certain jumps tedious to get the right speed and timing.
Even with these issues, the game is definitely worth playing and even re-playing.

Basically I bought this game from sale at 5€ price, but to be honest the game isn't even worth that, let alone its original price of 17€.

The fox is cute and I can understand the beauty of the atmosphere. The gameplay itself is really janky and the design of the "puzzles" is so boring. Basically after the first 15 minutes you have seen the whole game. While playing the game I thought to myself that "there is no way that this game has been made by more than two people, let alone a studio full of people" and after quitting the game I visited the developer's website and it was actually two people. Therefore, I can understand why the game lacks pretty much every enjoyable concept from it.

I don't hate the game, I just find it extremely bland and boring. Will refund it.

It's an amazing game. The game looks really good and the music is really beautifull. it's awesome to play as a fox, to jump and run around as one is great.

The game does not hold your hand. You need to figure our where to go and what to do. luckily in the most part of the game that is not an issue.
But in the larger maps you can loose the right way to go or miss some important things. it can be confusing sometimes.

that being said, they game is worth playing. for the ambiance, the world and the great music
(I've beat this game under 6 hours, most of them offline)

Quite_Simpleyy
Quite_Simpleyy

this is an amazing game, there isnt much else to be said

even though I played this game for a very very short time, the pure story - graphics - music and everything else about it was very good, especially for a game which was made by 2 people with the help of others (it seems). The only reason why I refunded it was because I knew that it would be a game i would just complete and forget about, but dont let this stop you.

please, give it a try if you have left over money. you wont regret it.

What can i say. this game is beautiful, linear but with plenty of secrets, completely free of dialogue or text. you make out the story based on murals and progression. it's a long one to play in one sitting, but man. It's so good. It's so good.

My wife saw this title during the last Steam Winter Sale, and the pretty environments with a cute fox was all she needed to want to play. I watched her for most of the game, and really that's most of what this game is. With no exposition and no real cutscenes the story is a bit vague, and most of the world is a gigantic empty mass with puzzles scattered inbetween. For what it is, this works well enough -- Spirit of the North is essentially a walking simulator, and the environments are spectacularly done with a solid soundtrack to make exploring enjoyable and atmospheric.

Where the game ultimately falls short is that there is actually very little game. The platforming elements are clunky, both in controls and in collision boxes in-game, and the huge expanse of the world often provides minimal guidance on where to actually go. Sometimes things which seem optional become mandatory, and others the required path is a tiny little jaunt off a gargantuan field or hillside that takes about 5 minutes to walk around. The puzzles are relatively simple, but this game is also difficult to do in one sitting so it's easy to forget some very subtle things that the game briefly shows you once and then expects you to remember hours later.

While it's clearly a labor of love from the developers, I don't think the game is worth the full price tag. We came in at about 9 hours of game time to complete, maybe a bit less, and the level of polish and the underlying content on this title is not such that I think it warrants a $20 purchase. However, I think this is a great title to pick up on sale, especially for kids or for anyone just wanting a casual experience. I think we picked it up for $8-10 or something in that range, which I think is fair.

Certainly an impressive amount of work for two guys doing it on their own, and the underlying flaws are understandable in this context.

This game was really different from what i usually play, but boy, it did not disappoint. This game has been one of the best gaming experiences ever with nice n chill gameplay, stunning environmental storytelling and great visuals. The game also has a neat little camera mode which was so fun to use!
Only ''bad'' thing i noticed was that the movement was buggy every now n then but it won't stop u from doing the things that u need to do in the story itself. So i'd say it was just a small hiccup that happened maybe twice.
The game is short even though u get all the achievements but it has replay value and honestly is worth the price. ♥

Lost spirit puppy

Spirit of the North is a very beautiful game, but it doesn't have any dialog or objectives. It's a fully open world which sounds better than it is since there's barely anything to explore. Running around the gorgeous landscape will get you nothing, making it very obvious that there's a path to follow but then not being able to find it. The platforming is down-right infuriating, including being blown off a surface for no reason, as if something exploded next to you and making you start all over. I'm having to use YouTube walkthroughs cause I'm so lost, ruining the beauty and original concept of this game.

Just finished this game after getting it on sale for around $8.50. It is a super cute, visually stunning game with a beautiful soundtrack to match it. Some of the puzzles can be confusing and take time to figure out, and the autosave feature isn't the best, but overall I had a positive experience and rate this game very highly for an indie game. It's fun, cute and you can bork as many times as you want!

Ps. It might get you emotional.

This game is absolutely stunning. The world is beautiful and vivid, and the music is just *chefs kiss*.
It's a puzzle game, but I found all the puzzles to be very easily understood, once you understand the mechanics of the game.

As someone with brain fog, I also found the game to be easy to play, so this is a good place for new players to try their mind, and for other disabled players to just have fun.

Again, this was just such a beautiful game, and I laughed out loud during the credits, from pure joy at the gameplay there.

Look, I love the idea of this game and yeah, it was okay for a first play through but I just had too many issues with it - especially when going back to 100% I found it particularly grating. The jumping for example, why does it not work? Idk man, just sometimes game says no. The lag which is really annoying as I've done all I can to adjust settings and it still refuses (when every other game runs fine!) making jumps and puzzles just that bit more frustrating. I hate that I'm leaving a negative review, but I'm just really angry with the amount of times I've had to restart the game just in the last few hours when its crashed :( I just wanna play funny fox game

Amazing! The graphics are crazy good, never seen anything like them! And for a reasonable price too! The story is immersive, spooky, and mysterious, and the fox is adorable. I highly recommend! Just savor it, don't play it all in one go! It's also really tricky, because it doesn't tell you when you miss something. I had to go back multiple times to find I'd missed a staff or more lightstones. Very fun, get it!

i frequently got lost especially in chapter 4 and 7, i had to look up a walkthrough just to get through them. Absolutely breathtaking game. I love the calm soundtrack this game has, puzzles are interesting and withing the first few minutes into the game i had already fallen in love with the games main character. You play as a fox if that is unclear, you can bark and wiggle your tail, which are really cute, the way the fox walks and behaves are pretty accurate, you can tell that they have put in effort. The graphics in this game are stunning. Not for a really long time has a game stolen my heart like this one, it has a special place in my library.

So I am amending my review. Over all the game graphics are on par. Love the detail. Now this game is very simplistic in nature. One finds out how quick one is on problem solving, there is no map and your "guide" is iffy at best. I honestly don't really know the actual story of this game. at all. You start out running in the snow, I wasn't aware I needed to save shaman with their staffs until I had already missed two. And trying to find them is a challenge in itself. Overall it was interesting to play. no rush really to complete it or anything. but for me, I need a map. like omg a map. Chapter 8 alone drove me crazy because I didn't know where I was supposed to be going? I'll recommend it for people to just play if this is their kinda thing, otherwise no.

- You can't jump through your screen to live in the beauty of the game

Pros:
- Gorgeous atmosphere, leaves you wanting to visit Iceland and Europe
- Solid soundtrack
- No dialogue and no pressure
- good/fun puzzles
- little to no bug/glitch problems
- plot is what you make of it

Is it perfect? No. Is it awesome for what it is? YES! Worth getting on sale, but I am left wanting to support the developers for this glorious piece of playable art. Would love to see a sequel or some DLC's. Or another game like this, but longer and more to do. But as a chill non combat game for all ages, Spirit of the North is a no regrets purchase for me. For those looking to escape for a while, I highly recommend picking this one up. It is also available for Switch and PS4/5.

I wish I could give this a "meh" rating. The game is gorgeous, though the fox model, imo, needs some TLC. The music is great, however in some areas it's a little intense for what the game is. I think it would be better with a Breath of the Wild type music.

As for gameplay, I was a little annoyed that I couldn't sprint at the beginning of the game. You get it after maybe 10 minutes of playing, depending how long you want to explore and appreciate the environment. With that said, control and movement is just not good, plain and simple. In a big open field it's no problem, but if you are need to might tight and precise movements, it can be a little annoying. Next, swimming and water & forced animations. Holy cow is water annoying. Sure, you swim slower than you sprint, which makes sense, but half the time after getting out of the water you are forced to stop and watch a short animation of the fox shaking the water off. Pretty obnoxious after the 20th time. Lastly, possible spoiler, so ignore this part if you want, but each time you activate something with your spirit ability, you gotta go find another flower patch to reacquire your spirit ability. I understand why that mechanic is implemented into the game as it affects the puzzles, but needing to run over, activate the animation, and wait for it to complete so you can regain the spirit ability is annoying. Sure, it's only 3ish seconds, but that time adds up

The game, at least for the first two chapters is extremely linear, and this is coming from a guy that grew up on the Legend of Zelda. I believe there is a chapter select option at the main screen, but I did not investigate it. The reason the linearity is a problem for me is because I am an completionist, or at the very least a collector. I like to collect as much as I can, within reason of enjoyability. In the trailer and pictures above, you can see monk type NPCs that can be awoken with staves. If you miss a monk, there is a decent chance you cannot go back to get them, then you gotta start the chapter all over. That's a big oof for me

Like I said, I wish I could give this game a "meh" rating. Definitely not worth the $20, imo. I bought it 70% off for $5.99, which would be a great price imo, but the linearity, mediocre controls, and forced animations make it less enjoyable

I just finished this game and let me tell you. It told a story without words. I loved the puzzles and (spoiler) seeing all the souls I saved at the end. I will for sure play through and find the ones I missed. I also really like that as you progress and reach milestones you unlock new fox skins with different light patterns. Overall a really solid, beautiful, and relaxing game with a story that was a pleasure to experience.

P.S. Giving aurora walking at the end credits was so fun and a great way to end it.

I've only got 2 hours in so far and it's a bit different from the stuff I usually play, but I'll strongly recommend it at this point.

The landscape visuals are beautiful, the music is great, and I like how there's no tutorial and you just kind of have to figure it out.

The fox is also frickin' adorable. It doggy-paddles in the water, shakes itself dry, AND you can wag it's tail (that does seem to have a mechanical use in dark areas). I'll admit I teared up a little at the end of the prologue after it had been whimsically following the spirit fox and sliding around on ice and playing in the hot springs.

Based on the store page thumbnails, it might get a little darker later on, but I'm enjoying it as an atypical game so far.

The cutest most detailed game I've ever seen. You want to be a fox? Solve Puzzles? Play peacefully? these are just some of the perfect aspects of this game. What I love about this game is that the puzzles aren't "brain melting." They are quite simple and easy to complete. If I had more free time I would spend all day just exploring in this game. Foxes are my favourite animal and this game makes me happy every time I play it. The major con I have against this game is that the "Wizard skeletons" are actually really well hidden in some parts. Other than that I love this game and 100% recommend! :D

it looks so cute. the music is so nice.
a shame the controls are beyond ridiculous, and the levels require you to make precision jumps while the fox happily bounces off 20 degrees left or right of a random pebble.
Oh and don't forget about getting stuck because the dumb animal keeps walking while the game is raising / lowering platforms with nothing you can do.
could've been awesome. now it's just a 1997 game with better hair animation.

A friend recommended this game to me during it's 70% off sale and I've got to say, I'm glad he did! I absolutely love this game! I'm hooked! The simplicity and fun and beauty of it. Thrilling adventures with no dialogue at all. Breathtaking scenery and wonderful enjoyable music that changes as you progress. I love the puzzles too! Very emotional at times which is also nice. I kinda wish I was playing this in VR, what excitement sliding down the ice etc... I give this two thumbs up and a 10/10.

This game is very relaxing. No stress, just being a fox, running around a beautiful landscape to soft, calming music. Its peaceful, and after a stressful day at work, just what I need to wind down. It can be a little jarring in the beginning, as there is no dialogue to guide you on what you are doing exactly, but the game flows well enough that it wasn't a problem after about five minutes or so. Overall, if you want a game thats fun, relaxing, and adorable, this is a great game.

Clunky, unpolished, buggy, very slow and tedious. The final level with all the blue hue and no direction where to go almost drove me insane. Also had a major game breaking bug which made me restart a chapter. (all the water disappearing, leaving me with no way to get back up.) If your idea of fun is running back and forth between flowers and sigils with a fox that's a pain to control all of the game, go for it.

There is a great idea for a good game here, but the execution falls so short it's painful.

Beautiful game. Lovely music. The controls can be a little wonky at times, but overall a decent game. Chapter 7 is a mind numbing, patience crushing spirit hunt that would have been much easier if the game had a simple counter to let you know how many spirits you had or had left. In spite of that, I enjoyed the game and would recommend.

Visuals: incredible. A lot fun to play :3
Story: amazing
Music: wonderful
Gameplay: 7/10 - the only negative aspect of the gameplay is that sometimes you gotta have precision to jump to some areas and the fox seems to have a slitly delay to turn right and left making a little complicated.

Spirit of the North is as i know the first Game from Infuse Studio & Walking Simulator with Puzzles

You are a lonely Fox in a strange World with some Parts attacked by an evil Aura.
The Start through an Ice Field is not really interesting.
Than you get in different Areas of the World where you need finish some small Riddles with a few Abilities, that even for casual Gamers should be to hard to figure out, if you explore well enough, but some Riddles are really fine.

For others who want a Challenge they can search for 28 Sticks & the Shaman Spirits, some are really well Hidden & after that you can find them again in the Spirit Worlds, where are some well hidden again, too.

+++ good Atmosphere alone in an Lost World (no other Land Animals)

+++ easy 100 % Steam Achievements

++ Graphics are fine for the Price (watch Trailer)

++ Sound too (watch Trailer)

++ 6 Trading Cards (Five would be better, some nice Point Store Items)

++ some Riddles & some optional 28 Spirit Search

++ Chapter Select where you see how many/ which missing Shaman Spirit

+ Story complete without Words, only with the strange Ending

-- short Game if you rush through

-- no Map you dont know where you can Jump/ Go & where not, need to test it

- 28 Spirits Spirt World to find (U dont know how many u have & that u have, They should Shine in a White LIght if found, so u know which missing)

-slow Begin (big Snow Area maybe complete empty, dont even explore maybe)

- no Steam Cloud (new Pc, Save File Corrupted) if u are far with 28 Spirits it could be very disappointing

- Price (maybe buy it with 50 % Discount & play 100 %= 7,50 Euros for 7 Hours

After the Reference Lost Ember i didnt had to much high Expectations, but for this Price its okay with Steam Achievement & Trading Cards (7-8 Hours 15 Euros, Lost Ember 7 Hours 30 Euros) surely 2 different Animal Story Walking Simulators.

Thx 4 reading. Hope you enjoy like me did. GL HF

just finished this game and it has become one of my favorites. my only serious dislike is the save game system, which auto saves between finished chapters and does not allow any manual saves. this is a big issue for me with games, as i often won't return to a game if i have to repeat difficult action sections if i need to quit before an auto save. however...i am overlooking this issue since the game otherwise is so good.

the main character is a fox and easy to control with keyboard and mouse. there are special powers you obtain, including fast running as you progress. scenery is excellent, music is very good. the game is described as an adventure game, which is important to me as i don't usually like action games due to not being very good at them. so for me, there is a bit too much action and manual skills required, mainly later in the game. but i persevered, as i wanted to know what would happen and how the game would end. i did need a walkthrough occasionally, and with that i was able to finish the game.

i strongly recommend this game, despite my few issues with it. it was a lot of fun and satisfying to play and progress. even though it was released in 2020, i still suggest you give this one a try. it's so fun. oh, and the ending was very good and wrapped up the entire story in a happy way.

Valthejean

What...an utterly...beautiful experience that was.

It's not often a game so simply manages to catch my attention, and draw me in. This game, in me, reignited an emotion I rarely feel in games today: the love of gaming. At its core, it is a simple puzzle platformer. But very quickly you'll see it's much more of an experience, and a beautiful one at that. The music is somber but touching, while the setpieces are absolutely gorgeous. I found myself exploring not because of the hidden shamans spirits to save, but because I just loved the environments and wanted to take a look.

The story follows that tried and true method of show, don't tell, leaving the player to piece together what is presented. Nowadays people tend to get caught in the mindset that a narrative needs to be some epic drama with exciting moments and high stakes. What this game understands, PROVES, is that doesn't always need to be the case. In fact, some times it's better to take a step back, and let the world breathe a little. Shadows of the Collosus did this particularly well, and I found myself thinking of that game many times.

I really don't have any complaints, other than the desire for more of it. You can very quickly beat it, let alone 100% it, I'm 5 hours in and am just missing 2 achievements which should be relatively easy to get. I hope to see more games like this, because this is what gaming should be: a great experience.

Play the game, try it out for yourself. For once, a game that doesn't try to trick you into playing longer than 2 hours so you can't refund it. It just gives you a great experience from start to finish. I guarantee you won't want to return it. Play it. Enjoy it. Love it.

Wonderful atmosphere, good music, a fox. What else is needed?
Regarding the landscape, the game exceeded my expectations. It is truly nice.
For me, the gameplay is okay. It took some time to get used to the controls, and some patience is needed. The puzzles aren't hard, sometimes a bit repetitive. But the atmoshpere is totally worth it.
I can only recommend this game, it feels like a breath of fresh air from the bleak reality.
(But only if you like foxes :)

Eloryia
Eloryia

Spirit of the North's description reminded me of Lost Embers which I enjoyed thoroughly. I was excited to play it and experience the game play and story. However, the controls are very ridged and clunky, not fluid at all. Spirit of the North tries to have light platforming, but because of the lacking controls any slight mistake and you fall off and have to try again. You cannot turn mid jump, so if you miscalculate there is no rectifying your mistake, you just have to try again which is a slow process to get back to where you were. There is a good amount of water in the beginning you have to swim through and each time you get out of the water onto land the fox stops to shake the water off. EVERY. TIME. You cannot skip this. You can jump to cancel, but that takes about the same amount of time and you still can't move until either animation is finished. Also there is only one swimming speed: slow. So when you eventually miss that jump and fall into the water it's a slow paddle back to where you were to try again.

Plus finding a staff to give to a corpse to set it's soul free/give it peace is tied into being important to the story (as seen in the trailer and game images). The game gives you an image count of how many corpses you've encountered and how many you've missed. As someone who loves to collect things in games, this really tripped me up. They hide them, which can be fun, of course! But it being an important task to the story is very frustrating when after you finish an area, go to the next, and the game tells you you've missed someone in the previous area with no way of going back... that sucks. Yes, there are collectibles that can be added to the game for extra fun and you don't have to find ALL of them to find enjoyment in the game, but this is advertised as important AND there is so little to do (at least in the beginning) that bringing the staff to the corpse is a big deal. It just hurt when I would be carrying a staff for so long, not find a corpse for it to be set free, and I find another staff. It feels like I failed that corpse's soul and failed the chance to complete the game properly because there are a lot of areas where there is no back tracking to find the corpses you've missed. How can Spirit of the North advertise this as a core game play aspect, yet hide them like they are simply just easter eggs?

Over the course of the 1 hour I ended up playing this game I only grew more and more frustrated with the clunky controls, slow movement in the game despite the Sprint feature, and the lack of back tracking to find the corpses I missed. I paid $6.52 for this game during the Summer Sale and I still don't think that's worth it for a game this frustrating and unpolished, let alone $20. It really bums me out because I read many reviews on how great this game's story is. Even the beginning gives you amazing story set up without any dialog, but sadly I cannot recommend this game at any price.

TLDR: Spirit of the North's game play is so clunky, unpolished, and frustrating that it's not worth $6.52, let alone $20, despite how good other people say the story is.

Grudgingly yes - If you can put up with janky controls in exchange for a cute, indestructible fox.

Story:
After the disappearance of the Guardian of the Northern Lights, devout shamans set out across the land in a desperate search to find her. Along their journey, they stacked stones as a beacon to guild the fox home. Hundreds of years later, after many generations of shamans had passed away without success, shamans continued to set out across the land in search of the legendary Spirit Fox. They stacked stones as they went clinging to the hope that doing so would one day guide the fox home and save their people from a deadly plague.

The good:
- Organic environment, it looks like a vast open environment, but somehow the structures guide you so naturally that you don't get lost
- The storyline was quite beautiful
- No soft locks
- You need to recharge your powers and there is no shortage of "stations" to do so
- Fox is indestructible, you can jump of anything
- When it works it is pretty great

The bad:
- Janky as hell controls which becomes apparent when you need to do the athletic stuff
- Fox needs to be aligned perfectly before making a jump. No changing direction mid-air
- Even then he sometimes jumps into random direction, making even simple jumps a pain in the ass

amyice

I really, really wanted to like this game. I honestly did. The graphics are beautiful, the animations on the fox are great. The music and atmosphere and environmental storytelling is great. But the main gameplay element of the game, jumping puzzles, are just way too janky to be fun.

The jump mechanic is infuriating to begin with. You cannot make the smallest of jumps because without a good amount of forward momentum, all your fox does is hop in place. Aiming your jumps is very difficult, so is timing. Be prepared to spend hours trying and retrying the simplest of hops because the game decides you're a pixel short, or your fox decides all it wants to do is somersaults. Also, you can't save except at sparse autosave points, so be prepared to do it all over again when you inevitably rage quit.

I got into this game and loved everything about it, but it turns into a rage game so fast I can't enjoy the beauty of it anymore. With a little bit smoother movement mechanics it would be a fantastic game, but unless you're a masochist gamer it just isn't fun past the first two chapters.

I bought this game for my 7 year old daughter on her switch, she has played through the game and I'm surprised she hasn't run away from home she's so unbelievably bored with it. I bought the game on Steam to see if it was a legitimate complaint, and I can't. I just can't, yall.

Fairly appealing visuals that wear thin very quickly. You can only marvel at the twenty seven polygons of snow for so long. After the five minute honeymoon period of "oh this looks nice I guess?" period is over, you're left with Turok level graphics with, and this is the kicker, no gameplay.

Generally totally missing quality of life features that are standard by 2022:
Long unskip[able cut-scenes that never seem very important. Horrendous font choices for the menu system. The escape key doesnt escape you from the menu.

It's like a spiritual successor to Okami but it looks worse, and there's nothing fun happening.

marsbars
marsbars

Initially, I thought this game would live up to the hype but I had to give it up pretty quickly. The bad sound FX of crunching snow repeatedly was driving me crazy. Graphics at first were pretty but it's a lot of running with not enough visual or audio diversity. The controls were pretty clunky and the snow graphics were unsatisfying. No sprint!? Also the cut scenes, which are usually the most polished as far as animation goes, were ragged and bland. There just wasn't enough of a story or emotional connection, and the graphics weren't good enough to make up for that.

The game is pretty and the music is pretty. I tend to like games like this, but the game seriously makes me wanna take a nap. There's a part near the beginning where your fox gets injured and he has to limp somewhere to get healed. That part is SUPER slow and the time should have been cut in half for how long you had to walk to get to your objective. Also it's hard to figure out where to go next after an objective is completed. Easy to get lost if you're not paying attention, and I was paying attention lol. I want to like it, but I recommend Journey instead!

I love the idea this game is going for, but it gets extremely repetitive and annoying after a while. Some of the puzzles are fun, other times they're very annoying. It's not that they get hard, but it's easy to slip up due to the stiff controls. Also, the checkpoint system is pretty damn annoying too, and once I fell through the map, and there was no failsafe to get me back up again, so I just kept falling and had to reset the game, which meant I lost a ton of progress. Sometimes the menus doesn't work either, and once the world wouldn't load. I say steer away from this one. I have no idea how it has so many positive reviews.

Gorgeous third person exploration puzzle platformer, aaalmost not recommended due to annoyingly fiddly jumps and poor controls, as well as the fact that the last 2-3 chapters drag on for far too long.
