This game is amazing. But there's one problem the story feels short the ending was good and sad but I loved it this game was worth it

This game won't launch at all, i've been on every forum and it's driving me nuts. i do not recommend this game to people if they don't like to take risks.

Edit: After a couple of weeks i finally got this game to work. it just needed an extra launcher from the web, set the game to run on Windows 11, and boom! you've got yourself a working game.

Best to get 2, but there is nothing wrong with still wanting the first one, it is also a good choice. :)

Have played this one for a while. And it didn't get me. Boring and gray.

I tried to find something good here, but failed. SOD isn't interesting, extremely repetitive journey where you don't care about anything. Here you have to complete similar quests one after another, search for resources and drag it to your base.

Driving and shooting are out of date. Bugs aren't critical, but really annoying. For example, you can crash in an invisible wall while driving. Or you can't shoot through a window.

My verdict - it is one of the worst zombie games I have ever played. And the same time it is one of the dull games in my opinion.

Can't recommend it because didn't find anything good.

P.s. Probably, if I played it much earlier, it could be a different review. But for today it's not so.

P.s. All my short reviews you can find here

Absolutely amazing game, even though it has an older release it has aged nicely. I have played this game on a couple platforms and it still gets me hooked for weeks on it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a realistic and captivating zombie game!

Graphical glitches such as flickering shadows at both 1080p and 4k. Poor performance as well. Prone zombies will snap upright and instantly grab you if you try to run in and do a finisher on them. The game will constantly spawn zombies around you if you're currently fighting some, and these zombies that clearly spawn in will start shuffling towards you. Zombies will get spawned in if you start searching containers, too, and they also will start shuffing towards you, even if you didn't alert any and are doing a slow search. To say the game is unforgiving in its zombie spawning would imply anything about it seemed intentional. As soon as I got out of the tutorial area, as I was leaving the vet clinic, two hordes were spawned on the road, one in front and one behind. And then a feral spawned too, just as Alex left and while I was backtracking for a vehicle, so Sam wasn't there to help. I had no other choice than to shoot it, which worked, but then I died to two hordes. No matter how many times I got up, no matter how many times I healed, naturally I couldn't escape the zombies, because they were all runners. I couldn't kill them, I couldn't escape them. I couldn't shoot them because guns don't kill zombies unless its a headshot, and I didn't have enough time to aim for heads.

If you want to play this because of the DLC for State of Decay 2 that takes place between this and SoD 2, don't. Its a shitty console port,

Like quite a few people said: This game aged really well and I'm having a blast playing it

The only thing that is really annoying is a somewhat frequent bug that lets npcs not behave the way they should, which in turn locks the progression in the quest you just started. The solution is to restart the game, which is rather fast. However since no place in this world is save, you start in your home base. But if you drove to the other part of a map with a car, the car will still be there and you'll have to find a new one. Which is also not that hard usually, but just takes from the experience.

Nevertheless I still recommend the game!

Cyberpunk runs better than this garbage

Awful and ugly would be too overrated to describe its graphics. One of the shitiest graphics I have seen in decades.
(Yes, I considered its date of release too! Textures and overall it just looks so ugly)

If there is any competition for the award of worst graphics and optimization, I will bet all my money on this piece of shit. This game is so janky.

Ok, so people will say Gameplay matters more. Well, it sucks in this too.
Potential of this game was very good in theory, but everything executed here is horrible

Almost every mission I played is repeat, I had to kill zombies, save survivors or gather resource in its uninspired boring story, every mission - no matter main or side.

Ok atleast combat or shooting should be fun right? NO, its horrible, just smash Left click and see same animations again and again.
So is driving fun? NO, very horrible physics.
Resource management? NO, horrible AI friends don't even help.
Graphics and optimization? LOL
Story? DUST

Just image doing everything for the survivor community on this game, finding ammo, foods, resources, medical supplies, even morale.
And every time you need help, they will charge you to help (which will infact be their own needs you would be fulfilling). And they won't be able to do anything other than combat. Atleast they should be smart enough to pick resources while we defend as we can carry really limited supplies which forms the backbone of this game, but nope. People say this game is realistic, for every thing this game is realistic, its atleast 10 times more unrealistic and boring.

Sony is making games like God of War. While Microsoft is busy making this exclusive for Xbox and Windows, LOL

Unlike most hack and slash zombie games, this one takes more the holistic view of survival in a post-zombie apocalypse, requiring not only combat to survive but also community building (e.g. interpersonal yes, but also finding and developing a home base, as well as developing the various characters' abilities based on the play style and various aptitudes possessed by the different characters. A ton of fun and definitely worth a try!

Fantastic game overall!

The fact that this game allow you to control a community in a Zombie apocalypse IS SO AWESOME!!

The game's task are pretty repetitive though. But i think the best way to play these types of games is that, you become those characters that are in the game. The moment you try to roleplay all these characters and all of these situation in the game, the game becomes a whole damn fun

Note : Sorry for bad english

This is a great game and although the sequel means that this game will never see any more development, there is enough fun to be had. There are some great challenges and decisions to be made, each deciding the outcome of the game, a specific character or even a specific group you have met. Some of these challenges have a timer and this adds to the challenge, making you decide in some respects who lives and who dies.

There is a good story from the beginning which helps drive the game unlike other games of a similar genre. There are some gripes though specifically your inability to repair cars on the fly, this is something that has been resolved in the sequel.

The good thing about this game that took me by surprise is that it will work on low end systems very well, although there will be some quality problems that you will expect, but the game plays well. Driving mechanics are not glitchy, gun and melee mechanics are not glitchy, making this game feel extremely polished. I supposed that's due to the YOSE upgrade, but still it feels polished. I bought this as a bundle with the sequel, but the price of £15.49 as it currently stands is actually well worth the investment.

Since I went back and enjoyed the second game I figured I'd pick up this one too to support the devs who clearly care about this franchise.
As a zombie game it's nothing new thematically, but as a simulation game this is the second best open world zombie survival game I've played. The second game SOD 2 is a polished version of this game, but this game does have it's own charms. As much as people complained about the lack of realism or the repetition of this game I found neither a giant hurdle. It's got the soul of a zombie movie so some things are taken from granted: people can take damage but not die until a zombie bite is dramatically convenient, any ordinary joe can beat a zombie to death...etc.
But by itself State of Decay is everything you could want from a zombie concept. Big open world with pretty biomes, a variety of charging undead, survivors to recruit or help, tons of things to search while trying to avoid noise to keep the horde at bay, improvised weapons, a base to maintain...it's in all in a nice neat package with a lot of personality.
You do need to do a lot of the same thing but then you can play in shifts: spending some time exploring/zombie slaying and other sessions spent upgrading your base and managing supplies.
The jank oft whined about years ago seems nicely smoothed out. It runs fine, looks fine, and this game as oppsoed to the sequel didn't ask me to sign into an Xbox account that wanted my location info for some reason.

Nothing much to say, it's a title that's nearly 10 years old and it shows. Bad voice acting, and boring gameplay, it really has nothing going for it.

I never played it originally when it released in 2013 on consoles, but it *feels* like a console game. Just archaic and boring. The combat is fine if you don't mind the old third-person melee combat that softlocks you on the enemy you're fighting and you weapons breaking on occasion.

I think if you're looking for a zombie game from the same era, Dead Island is a far better game to give a try.

For a game that is about 7 years old, it holds up nicely. There are some minor texture issues with some of the vehicles and the questions/missions come at you like crazy. There's always someone in your base causing issues that need to be resolved, so that can get a little annoying as you're already on a mission and now you have to go back and deal with an attitude someone has. Overall it is an entertaining game to play. I would recommend the game, but maybe wait until it is on sale as I did.

got it in a bundle when i bought SOD2 and played it for a bit of the back storey before i moved on.
Storeys is ok, game play is interesting, the character swap done in this way and on this scale is new to me, i found it refreshing, combat was smooth, i think i would have enjoyed it more if it was re-mastered, the graphics are a bit lacking even for a 2015 launch. a fun little game. with something a lot of games forgot to add to there games (fun and game) it has.
so its a yes

The best zombie game I’ve ever played it feels more realistic than any other game the risk of your survivor dying for good is so rewarding if you live. The DLCs are amazing I haven’t played lifelin I’m currently on Daybreak but it’s really good so far. It has great story and is definitely a game from this time.

Really enjoyed this game. Played it originally on Xbox years back. It was a refreshing survival zombie apocalypse game. I love the diverse characters and semi-realism affecting your survival - like injuries, sickness, survivors getting upset or scared.

If you love survival games, definitely pick this up.

RappiRaptor
RappiRaptor

I really enjoyed State of Decay 1. Lifeline has a few issues though. Zombie Spawns are absolutely insane making saving any survivor almost impossible. When your soldier runs out of stamina it is impossible to make any kind of attack or run away especially if you have a feral on your tail. even if its just one regular zombie and a feral youre done for. your survivor cannot fight off a feral with any additional zombie at all ever.
I have had times where a survivor I am trying to save ends up dying before i even get to their location. Too difficult.

I really didn't enjoy how much the game pesters you with side quests, and other shit, with Lily on the radio nagging you to do something new almost every 10 minutes it feels like. There's absolutely no freedom to explore on your own like you might would want to in a "sandbox".

Also, the game continues in real time even after you've quit. I understand this is what "defines" State of Decay from its inception, to hardcore players, but it should be noted that NOTHING in the official description of the game on the Steam page discloses this!

I was on the edge about playing more after my first few hours being harassed by Lily, but when I discovered I'd be systemically punished for anything less than a daily commitment, I deleted the game from my computer. Just know what you're getting into with this, I guess.

I dont recommend playing this game until they get their shit together, the controls are janked as fuck, It has issues where the character starts ignoring turning or heading a different direction, sometimes your character gets stuck walking into one direction, and if your pinned you have a HIGH fucking chance of it apparently ignoring your spam of pressing the escape key. BECAUSE OF THIS FUCKING BULLSHIT GLITCH I LOST A FUCKING GUY, fix this or if your not gonna fix it, add a load/save function to allow someone to fix it for you and undo the damage your shoddy game does through this shit, not only to mention i had to reset a quest cause zombies got stuck under a porch and i couldnt damage them because of it, it was the quest with the Tanners when you help them to get the doctor

I remember the demo of this game on the 360 had a time limit to give you a little taste o the full game, but that timer didn't actually start until you reached the church, so as long as you never went there, you could play the game for as long as you wanted. After about 3 hours or so the game would bug out and run out of memory or something with textures not loading and characters losing all animations before you would eventually A-pose through the floor and die. I must have put about 300 or so hours into that demo before I eventually got rid of my 360 after high school. After getting it again on PC I don't even bother with the main story I just run around and kill zombies like I used to back then.

Decided to give this game a chance out of curiosity from playing the sequel. State of Decay 2 is something of a gem in my opinion - it does a lot of things well, some of them things other games haven't really explored in depth (or tried, and failed). It's been refined, polished, improved.

The first game... not so much. The bones are there, and some weird goopy stuff, and a few neat kill animations and a dodge move you might be forgiven for not realizing you have because it shares a button with the sneaky crouch-walk mode (which is, itself, unbearably, uselessly slow in this one). That's a good indication of the overall vibe of this game - it has a lot of features, bells and whistles. You can learn skills and special moves much like in the sequel, but the game doesn't bother to teach you how to do so nor how to actually use the skills once you have them.

In any case, the flesh and skin of the experience, they're either missing or in genre-appropriately terrible condition. Things that were made intuitive in SoD 2 (or at least, more so) are vague and weird in SoD 1. The motion flow that was such a joy in the sequel, far jerkier and more prone to your character heading in a weird random direction as you try to get moving, rather than the direction you clearly indicate with control input. Kind of a major issue for a game about evading endless hordes of the living dead! The graphics are merely okay; not awful, but not a joy to behold either.

One thing in particular that sticks out at me is the clumsy implementation of the narrative. Specifically, the ever-interrupted radio messages with story and flavor dialogue from Lily Ritter and other actual characters with names and personalities. These both can and frequently will be interrupted by random, unimportant messages like "I'm near the base now" or "I think that one guy ran off like an idiot and is about to get killed, again." (They don't say it that way, but they should.) Let that sink in. One-time story messages from characters who might have something genuinely interesting, or relevant, or important to say... and half the time you don't even get to hear them.

In fairness, though, you're probably not missing much. Zombie apocalypse happens, some people survive, some don't, the army shows up and they have a little competition with the cops to see who can act like the biggest jackoffs before both are predictably wiped out. Then you blow a hole in the walls separating the region from other regions, and that's basically it.

Breakdown mode seems to be more or less the same as story mode, but with a random (or unlocked hero?) protagonist. I got a balding dentist with a shotgun who was actually pretty cool, but I wasn't about to play through X more hours of the same drive-back-and-forth gameplay with him just to see if some more story would happen.

Lifeline mode... oy. You play some army dudes in a different city, most of which is blocked off by invisible walls or, even better, "danger zones" where zombies dial up to 11 their magical ability to appear out of thin air from every direction. Here you are tasked with building up a military base by scavenging as usual, but also you have to rescue some VIPs to be airlifted out, but also this lady on the radio keeps asking you to save the dumbest civilians you could possibly imagine. These people will try to loot a sack of paper clips from an office building swarming with zombies, and when they inevitably die as you try your best to keep them alive while risking your own life, the radio lady will remind you that you should feel bad about it. Fun stuff, huh? But then also also, just as the chopper is about to arrive and complete your extraction of important and civilian people alike, a swarm of zombies will charge your base and initiate a siege. Which works a lot less well than it does in the sequel! Expect the first wave to drag on forever while you wonder if the last few zombies got stuck, lost, or just didn't spawn in yet. Then the second wave will obliterate you with packs of special zombies (pouncy ferals and stompy juggernauts) along with swarms of regular but still moderately inconvenient and occasionally dangerous zombies. Oh, and armored zombies who are immune to firearms.

As a story, it's barely there. As a game, it's much worse than SoD 2. As a historical artifact that allows the player to examine the origins of a much better game, the earlier iteration if you will, it may hold some value... Even so, be prepared for a whole lot more jank and a fair amount of frustration, not least at the weird, messy interface and obscure prompts like "press/hold Q to learn a specialization". Oh, and reloading is janky, half the time your character forgets to finish the over-long reload animation halfway through, sometimes putting their gun away in the process. Great when zombies are swarming all around!

But hey, at least the devs learned from their mistakes, improved on their formulae. It reflects well on them that the next game was better, but that just makes it all the harder to go back and play the first one. My advice is, don't. Better to leave this as a crude prototype that inspired a much better game. Go play the sequel, if anything.

I haven't played this game in years. But I fucking hate it with a passion.

The game play mechanics are fine. Cool items and weapons. Challenging fights. Basebuilding is ... ok.

The thing I hate is that time CONTINUES in the game after you save. So let's say it's 9 pm, real world, and everything is fine and dandy at your colony, all problems sorted. You save, go to sleep, go to work the next day.

When you fire up the game again, you discover that everything has gone to shit. All the food you stored? Colony ate it. Did you clear the zombies from your turf? Well, there are hoards now. And your favorite characters went off and got trapped in some house somewhere. If you don't save them NOW, they're dead.

This is a game mechanic created by total assholes. It's the same kind of bullshit game makers use to get folks hooked on shitty apps. I cannot understate my complete disgust.

this game is one of the best zombie games ive ever played, i dont really pay attention to the story, but for the parts i payed attention to it i enjoyed it, the main characters were all pretty solid, the perm death is scary and the gore is amazing.
ive played the first quarter of this game atleast 50 times (dont ask) and id play it 50 times more.

i havnt played much breakdown as the time of making this but i might update once i play more, its similar to the main game except without proper story

lifeline is basically hard mode, every few days you have to defend your base and ive had multiple people die at once from a siege (which is what those are called). it feels like a struggle with not having that many supplies but i might just be bad.

all in all, i fucking love this game, and if you havnt played it you need to.

I'll be honest, this game when i bought it was so cheap, it was even cheaper than a bottle of milk.

Anyway, i played it on xbox gamepass like five years ago, and wanted to replay it on pc....
I didnt bothered to do the DLCs but base game was okish until a certain point where i'll explain the flaws further..
I actually was able to make Marcus and ED survive until the end in this run, i was amazed by that LOL.

For end the short intro, i think this is pretty nice game for weak pcs, survival style of it, its pretty unique, its short so you can finish it pretty fast, and has a unique funny beauty in its many minor bugs. Is worth it? In sales Yes(Bundle too). I think the best reason to play this, its to see the improvements in version 2 which is a lot better.

PROS:

-Each survival has unique traits (This makes you do a lot of decisions if you're trying to making him/her survive or not)
-You need to be strategical about your main base & outposts
-Running over zombies its fun
-Shotgun with fire ammunition
-Some basic fight mechanics with upgrades(its a bit fun and simple)
-A bit of humor in the quotes and writing

Neutral

- Story was so-so(the main events you have(Wilkersons, The Law, Army, Stray Couple, Church Group)
- A lack of logic..every stray car in the streets has infinite gas, and the whole game i didnt use gas for anything, even though theres gas to be looted... so, a whatever resource with lack of logic?
-You dont build attachment with most of the survivors, at some point you simple ignore the sidequests in the minimap(they're like minuteman's sidequests from Preston Garvey of Fallout4).

CONS

-BUGS/LOTS BUGS( I mean, glitching, npc floating, collision? Ok they're acceptable for a game in 2015 )

- 1° Major bug(most annoying one) every time i opened "MAP, Inventory(tab), Car inventory, or autosave icon showed"... the controls for walking W/A/S/D stopped working for a few seconds....very lazy coding.(And was never fixed)

-2° At some points i saw zombies simple spawning from the ground simple to harass me on street and others places where there was even outpost landmine and etc, this simple increased gameplay time(in a bad way, getting boring), because if i didnt kill those annoying walkings skeletons they would damage my health etc.

-3° While the AI of the zombies is great to annoy you, the AI of NPCs double annoy you, zombies can stick in your car and not let it go, but the NPC simple standing looking at you in the car and not get into it, after a horde surrounds both of you, the npc braincells actived.(Bull****)

-4° At some point, some npcs died just for dying, they had every maxed skill but when it was to go back for base...they simple died...I Lost Maya in that way, so the best way to play is sticking with one, then quit the game, after 1h etc go back into it, and your survivor would be recovered(you avoid wasting time in a good survivor's potential death)

-5° The last one, mission and achievements bugs, last mission i had to quit the game waiting a bit, then it triggered the conversation with the SGT, didnt make sense this bug at all, and some achievs you do what the achiev describes and simple wont unlock, or unlocked very afterwards.( i sacrificed a member for the "torn apart achiev, and it never got unlocked, same with mercy shot").

Story 6/10 (Could be worse but could also be better)
Music 6/10 (Not bad, but not memorable either)
Combat 8/10 (Really fun to play if you like zombie games)
Content 7/10 (Decent amount)
Final Score 7/10 (Not the best out there but boy... I had a lot of fun with it)

Decent management/survival mechanics, loved the combat and tbh... very enjoyable if you like zombie games overall.
