Ok the fucking brick wall puzzle is damn near impossible. Its a great game but wtf?

It's been awhile since i've written a review and its also been awhile since I've actually enjoyed a story-driven game as I find them really hard to get into. This review contains a few spoilers.

This game, wow this game aha...unique
Its really good! You're incharge of helping Quinn a depressed and anxious therapist who's been kidnapped and trapped in desperate need of help, your required to find him salvation and keep him sane, where every second counts.. Literally!

STAY plays out in real-time, meaning that every minute spent away from the game is a minute Quinn is left alone. Drop out of conversations or leave Quinn to fend for himself for too long and there may be consequences. I closed my game and went to bed, came back 12 hours later and there was Quinn, depressed and anxious about where I went and why I left him alone for so long. It actually makes me feel empathy for closing the game! Every little thing I say to Quinn makes a difference and once your bond and trust grows he will listen to you. Quinn is on edge, and so every response matters. Your trust between eachother can make him share his findings and deepest thoughts. Fail, and his emotions may work against you. But you must be careful because you can lead him into his death.

For example

I managed to get him on the roof of the house where he's anxious because he can't see anything. Quinn I say, don't worry about it! This can be your once chance of freedom and dont look back! Getting his motivation and hopes up he thanks me for everything, for keeping him sane and not letting him hurt himself.. "I'll talk to you when I get out of here. I owe you my life, bye" I smile! I saved Quinn!.. Right? No! He's falling, He didn't see the traphole, he's falling! (I literally screamed NO! when this happened as it was the first time I got him in a bad situation that got him killed...) oh god what have I done..I just made him so happy and confident he found his passage out but really I got him killed.
Anyways its just, this game brings many feelings that actually make you feel like this man, Quinn who's trapped and needs your help is relying on you, even when your not there talking to him, he's waiting staring at that screen hoping, just hoping you reply again.

The artstyle in this game is phenominal, normally im iffy when it comes to playing pixelated games. Not because they're "bad graphics" or anything, its more of just preference and the feel. But many times this game shows players how beautiful it is when coming across items or the little cutscenes coming across new things/puzzles.
24 chapters, seven endings and dozens of replayability trying to see what you can do with Quinn, how the different ways you can drive him to end his own life..

The puzzles arn't too crazy, I'm about half way through the game and I've only been stuck once on chapter 11. But the community was great and helped me along.

Hope this helps you decide you want this game! Its only 10 dollars and shit.. I've already enjoyed it more than triple A $80 games.

"Stay" is a very interesting game. I played it for something like nine hours without stopping once to get to my ending and, lucky me, I got the best one on first try.

The puzzles are really, REALLY hard, some of them being impossible for me to solve without help from the Dev Team (really nice, btw). I've been told that they might implement a "skip" button for those like me who were there for the story more than the puzzles.

The story is really nice and griping. I'll probably go back to this game in the future to get everything about it.

The writing is pretty good, except for a few sentences that felt "forced", like a remark on "being a SJW" after the other character tell a joke about blind people.

Anyway, for those of you who like a real challenge in term of puzzle, this is your game !

Interesting game. You are trying to help someone, but you can discourage him too.
Some puzzles are beyond our understanding and it is very frustrating to not understand :)
If you like story driven + choices, point and click and you like some difficult puzzle, try this game.

great story driven single player game. it can be challenging at times with certain puzzles but a very fun experience overall. On a first playthrough you looking at about a 4 hour journey minimum, but trust me its more than likley be longer than that with trying to get through some of the puzzles.

Sounds good in theory, boring in execution though. No intrigue, any decision is the right one.

A great idea which could have lead to several great experiences, but gets so frustrating and annoying. The start of the game it feelt awesome the art of the game is truly amazing i have to give them that. But the more you play you realize you are just babysitting an edgy and depressed adult which makes most of the time no sense whatso ever. Most of the puzzles are extremly poorly done, that gives you almost no clue on how to complete them. So unless you want to guess for litterally hours (or find a guide) then skip this game. Some of the puzzles that made sense was really great though and fun to complete. But the worst part of this game, is having to redo the chapters HOLY GOD. If you make a wrong decision that kills the main character you have to start the whole chapter over which sometimes lead to you having to do the entire puzzle over again. Or wait and listen to the dialouge which can several minutes until you get to the point where you took the wrong decision. If you have alot of patience, and love extreme puzzles then sure go for it. Or else then skip this, its more frustrating to play then anything else

I watched a friend play this on the day it was released. I was absolutely captivated by the puzzles in the game itself. The puzzles are absolutely flipping fantastic and I loved EVERY minute of them. The game itself is a solid game. Beautiful pixel design work, wonderful story and just, cannot give enough coherent thought at one in the morning, but 10/10, would buy again!

Great game. One puzzle was a bitch but after going to discord and reading the hints left by others and the developers i was able to solve it and continue on.

Not normally one for reviews, as English isn't my natural language but I felt it's much needed to do this because it's new game and if it wasn't for random Steam store browsing I wouldn't know about it.

In short, I do really recommend the game.

In long, on the day I bought it, I played almost all way to the end (only had to go to bed when I got stuck on last puzzle) -- I felt it was really neat to be able to bond with Quinn, and that you are actually working together with him to help him to try calm down, and escape the misfortune situlation he's in. The fact the game is also in real-time, even if you're away from the game it will still "play out" and when you come back, Quinn actually reacts to that and I thought it was really neat touch.

I was worried that it might be too strict if you happen to lead Quinn to death, but thankfully you can just re-try the said chapter without having to start over again, so I didn't feel too stressed about picking fatal choices (but at same time I still take my time doing choices, just I don't feel "stiff scared" to do it if that makes sense...)

The pixel graphics are really good, I mean I migth be biased but in this game some of scenes look really amazing and I think it works very well with the game.

The only few problems I had with the game is that:
- Some of the puzzles are hard, and I feel I had to look up outside of game to figure what I need to do for the puzzle. Some of them I don't really get why it's *that* answer. There's one puzzle I felt that relies too much on trail and error just to get through.
- I think the game could do with checkpoints before/after you finish the puzzle. Especially if Quinn die you'd have to re-do the puzzle.
- Silimiar to above, there's no way to advance through the text quickly. Ideally it's best to go to settings and turn the text speed to fast to remedy this, but I do feel it could do with advance through text.

It didn't really ruin the game for me though, I'm planning to play through the game few times so I'll have to see if the choices does actually differ the playthroughs but even if not, these choices wasn't really that easy and clear. I actually had to think about choices I'm going to make, which I do like.

Also as deaf gamer I will have to say thank you to developers for making it playable for deaf/hard of hearing players, and that none of puzzles requires audio. I was able to follow the story really well and I didn't feel my progrress was stopped because I couldn't hear. I had to say that, because it's really important to me in story-driven game with puzzles involved.

Well worth a playthrough or two if you've got money to spare and want to play something different.

I feel like I went into this game expecting the wrong thing. Rather than getting an atmospheric and intriguing P+C adventure tale that was dubbed elsewhere as something like a "Saw escape adventure", you get what's essentially a very limited VN with puzzles and multiple path choices, the weight of which seem a little arbitrary, and if not arbitrary, at the very least baffling.

The puzzles aren't all that original, though they're fiendishly unfriendly as the game goes on. I don't have much of an issue with them, though. My main turn off was the rather ploddy storyline, and a rather stupid "plays offline" mechanic.

I don't want to batter the dev here too much. The story is a genuine take on mental health and psychology. But it's hard to believe that a dozen or so text exchanges per chapter with an AI can be so mind numbingly dull and frustrating. In some ways I have to wonder if that was the writer's intent; that the player almost feels compelled to give up on Quinn every time he feels the need to correct a typo, quote from ancient texts and indulge in his self awareness. Thing is, this is foremost a game, and I had honestly lost the will to live at various points in the game, and the last straw came with the silly "consequence" to leaving the game for too long.

The game could also do with some serious explanations to its mechanics. It's never really made clear what the stats related to Quinn mean and how they affect choices. The four coloured "emotion values" seem like a neat idea, but I have no notion what they do, how they change, and if they have any importance at all. I honestly suspect they don't, but I suppose I lost interest long before then.

Good story and good game, but there are several points of game design that makes frustrated:

1. If you dead after sloving a puzzle within a single chapter, you have to solve it again, and it is a waste of time. My suggestion: Players are able to make the choice if they have solved the puzzle, take it or not.

2. Since you are making the game to be multi-ending, it would also waste a lot of time if player cannot skip the same dialogues. (You can still make new conversations appear in a second play to be unable to skip)

If these two points can be realised, I would be happy to take a second run (even more) of it. But now, I am afraid I do not have enough time/patience to go through some same words again and again.

Stay, for me its STAY AWAY. The game idea is great its something you dont play often or perhaps its even the first time you play something in this way.

The Chatting itself doesnt always make sense as its to hmm gameplayish. Normal people wouldnt write or speak like this.
The puzzles are not self explaining even some are hard to master as you dont get what you should do, i dont mean HARD like you have to think or try this and that, no i mean more like HERE SOLVE THIS....and you so.....EHHHHM WHAT should i solve and what kind of puzzle is this???? And NO its not good if puzzles are designed this way..they should be tricky and think in many ways about them but solvable with normal logic.

Then there are movement bugs sometimes he is moving fast sometimes he is moonwalking...OK, but if its happens in the "Search time" it takes so long until he moves forward or you need too logout and in and miss again the "Achievment".

I tried rly hard to like this game i mean the idea is great and i would rly like to know what the story is, but i couldnt go farther without forcing me to play this game and hate it all the time and feeling like iam wasting my time for a story perhaps not worth it.

It's like a Zero Escape game if you couldn't skip dialogue, the puzzles were all one stage with very little feedback, and there were no other characters to give hints or offer a different perspective.

The real-time aspect is potentially interesting, but the game's too frustrating to see it through. It's also in forced fullscreen.

Not sure why it says I played half an hour. I got about halfway through a playthrough.

I have a love for this game, i really do. the puzzles are crazy hard but intriuging and really require you to work for the answers....

however....//SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!///

i am livid about the randoizing of the maze. I loved how extensive it was discovering it the first time, but it was long and stress full but it was something i was happy to acheive and be done with. But thats the thing, i solved it once, i shouldn't have to solve and struggle through it multiple time (at least up to 6 times???) to get to enjoy and figure out the other pieces of the story. I'm so no happy right now, and quite honestly that and that alone KILLS the replay value for me. I could even deal with the pain in the butt picture pieceing i had to do several times over just to get back to that one chance click fight when i made a wrong choice. Srsly i probably wont touch this game again and that upsets me becasue its really great besides that, so i hope the developers can make the maze one solid venture each time through, just like the rest of the puzzles other wise im going to have to keep my review as a thumb down. There is enjoyable hard, then there is insufferable hard for no reason.

Yay! I saved Quinn! Or did i?

I wish i could say it was a "First Try" But i had to retry a few times here and there. I know the game can get quite sadistic but i tried my very best to SAVE Quinn, not to throw him deeper in hell. I had to use google only once, because, this brick wall puzzle is just way too weird. Once completed, i imagine that this red brick in the middle represents a unique point of pressure, that the lines represents weakness, but even then, it hardly makes sense. The rest of puzzles are obvious and doable by the common mortal, i would say. And choices are often very natural, when it comes to dialogs. If i didn,t pay attention to details, or didn't care about Quinn, or left him alone to watch documentaries on Youtube, he would have died. I mean... More often. LMAO.

In a sense, this game feels like a Ghost whisperer episode.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Whisperer

Hence the question... "Or did i?" next to "I saved Quinn".
In any sense, i saved his soul, and that's the part that is the most important...

Just sayin, i finished the game with a tremendous complicity with our very friendly protagonist. Yet, at the time i write this, i only completed 17 out of the 30some unlockables :o Next Try!

Truly love this game. I really do hope there is a way to implement a skip button though. Like for players who already beat it, to get to the other endings or rooms? So far found two endings but I must admit going through those puzzles (some of them like the brick and mirror is angst) is a little frustrating....I LOVE IT. That means you aren't holding our hands and want us to work for it. Kudos~

Still a little lost on how to get the other endings so any help there would be appreciated!

I tried this game before during PAX and waited every single day since then for its release. I am so happy I got the full version. This game is suspenseful and you start to really care about the main hero. There are bits of humor here and there, but overall, the game is a psychological exploration. The puzzles themselves are extremely challenging and if you're big on those, this is an absolute must have in your library. Also, A++ to the soundtrack; this game has great ambiance!

This is a really special game. It's not only a narrative driven game, but a really deep one.

The story you discover while chatting away (multiple-choice style) with the poor troubled Quinn, the cut scenes, the description of the items he finds, the riddles and the puzzles ... make it a really profound game. It has a lot of philosophy and symbolism and it requires psycology and patience to help him out (he can be a jerk sometimes that you just wish to let him rot in there, which you actually can).

Some puzzles are tricky and the fact that you need to figure out how they work make it even more challenging (specially the wall, which becomes a real wall in the game). But, man, how great it is when you figure it out!

I absolutely love the game!
So for all puzzle lovers, problem solvers and profound souls out there, go for it!

Ok... I just killed Quinn... I'm going to give it another go later, but just wanted to drop a thumb up really quick, because this is a pretty cool game. So far haven't had issues with puzzles, although I haven't got to the ones people are saying are the most challenging ones. But I love the details in symbols, quotes and references, and that somehow Quinn gets to your nerves.

Great game!

---- A Great idea, well executed but frustratingly slow-paced ----

positives:

+ a unique idea
+ challenging puzzles (very challenging in part!)
+ likeable main character
+ high replayability value due to various endings/bad ends
+ Interaction between player/Quinn is well-written and scripted.
+ easy to use interface and controls
+ I like the dynamic of the stay/trust option. Feels very fourth wall-ish and is quite fun to involve the player directly in the character's fate.
+ Pretty pretty pixel animations and I can see a lot of work has gone into presenting Quinn to the player

Negatives

- Some of these puzzles are way too vague e.g. the map puzzle? I never would have figured this out if not for a youtube guide!
- Skip option is desperately needed! Chapter 22 involves (without spoiling) a very intricate puzzle then a scenario which can result in an end game and repetition of the whole thing including dialogue and both puzzles. It's far too much.
- no obvious hint system - if you're going to put this amount of effort and thought into what are otherwise brilliantly conceived puzzles, you simply cannot assume the answer will be as obvious to everyone as it is to you as the developer. This is something I feel this game suffers badly from and it's a shame.
- again - NO SKIPPING DIALOGUE! Many visual novels offer this option so I'm curious as to why it was omitted in this hybrid visual novel/puzzler. It really puts the player off repeating the same scenario all over again. Honestly, I'm interested enough to persevere but it gets old (similar to Orwell, which managed to make two seasons without this option and it's horridly annoying. Ruins what is a fantastic gaming experience otherwise)

This game gets a massive thumbs up from me, but buyer beware. If you're not patient or super into puzzlers this game probably isn't for you. I'm hoping the devs continue to develop this title as it really feels quite similar to some early access games in the execution at the moment which is a damn shame. Potentially on a par with games such as One Shot in terms of originality and replayability but needs much tweaking.

Otherwise, props to the devs on a very unique, very engaging game.

At stay you begin with Quinn reaching to a PC and starting a converstation with you, all our choices there matter( even thought i think the majority of them were critical for the plot), the conversation at first is awkard, we dont get to know a lot of things about Quinn until we share a bond and he trusts us ( which is logical and happens in real life ).
This game is not happy , you will probably feel sad, a small emotional breakdown and empathy for the main protagonist, but i assure you, it will be worth it.

I don't leave reviews often, but this game got to me on a personal level. Being someone that is farily isolated, I felt like the storyline in this game hit all the nails on the head. The execution was excellent, although the puzzles were a bit odd at times (it would be nice to have a clue as to what to do sometimes). If you've ever experienced depression or anxiety, this game will feel way too personal to you, but you'll feel truly understood. Well done.

STAY gave me an experience no other game had given me before.
The connection with the character, the acknowledgement of time away from the game, the relationship that you, the player, create with the game because of all of this.

The story made me wonder, made me try to understand. The puzzles were challenging, not easy but rewarding.

I wish more games tried to make games like STAY has.

And that is why I recommend STAY.

The wait for STAY has been well worth it.

I have been eagerly anticipating the release of this game and now that I have seen the end result, I can say that it is what I was waiting for.

The relationship that you forge with Quinn is the star of the game. It makes you feel that Quinn depends on you and you feel responsible for what will happen to him in a way that only a few games have made me feel before.

I think this game delivers a very touching and special experience unlike any of the more mainstream titles in the market.

Fully recommended.

The Pr0tagonist
The Pr0tagonist

If the premis seems interesting to you play this game. It's really good. The story and presentation are top notch. What I like about it the most would make me go into spoilers but just trust me it's good. That being said you need to go in knowing a few things:

1. There are 2 puzzles in here that are a massive jump in difficulty. Most the others are fairly standard puzzles that I have seen other places. Well done but if you are into puzzle games you have seen those before. I LOVED those 2 puzzles and if this dev put out a game that was just puzzles of that caliber I would eat it up. But they are a massive road block. The dev did a exstreamly cleaver thing to set you up for one but if you missed it the puzzle is almost impossible. In a earlier easy puzzle there was moris code without a key so you had to google one showing you that you may need google to solve some of these. If that didn't happen I would have never figured it out

2. You can't speed up text. This is a good thing for your first playthough or any playthrough of stuff you haven't seen. It sets the mood perfectly and the animations make it feel like you are having a conversation. This is my chief complaint beacuse I booted up a second playthrough then realized that and now I'm waiting a week so it's not a fresh. This is compounded by the game killing you for making what seems like a good choice. Those deaths were not a problem with the story. I thought they served the nartive well it was just frustrating having to wait for Quinn to type out the same stuff you already saw.

3. The game casts you as yourself however there are a lot of conversation points were there is something obvious most pepole would say besides the options you are given. A lot of the time I felt like I was picking between the least bad thing to say to this guy. It served the nartive well but I found it off putting at first till I got used to it.

All 3 of those issues are minor things that can be solved with just looking up puzzle solutions and using a guide this game is deffently worth your time and money.

Alright so i've bought this game randomly, I do enjoy pixel games and it caught my eyes.

In STAY you got a guy named Quinn that get kidnapped and trapped in a single room with a computer and you gotta help with by talking to him, if you stay away or don't answer he gets anxious and loose trust in you etc ... you got it I guess

This is a great game, an unique experience in my opinion. I do recommend giving it a try

Fede

Stay is an unusual adventure/graphic novel game. It's "Away vs Stayed" system brings quite a unique concept. As you are away from your computer you will often find yourself thinking about Quinn (the main character) and what/how he might be doing. A hooking experience that also makes you struggle in worry about Quinn and with its dark theme/story.

The puzzles are quite hard, but nothing the community can't solve if you are all about the story ;) (like me). Also they seem to be taking steps into fixing the harder ones!

A total recommendation both if you like story based games or games that deal with mature/complex themes.

One of the few reviews I've ever written.

The beginning of this game is amazing, and unlike a few people on here, I actually like Quinn. Being in the seemingly hopeless situation that he is in, wouldn't you be depressed and anxious as well?

Anyway, I'll break this game down into a few categories:

1) Story: 4/5

Story itself seems interesting enough. There are about 20ish chapters in the game, and I'm up to chapter 18. You are basically helping Quinn escape a rundown house by finding clues along the way and gaining his trust to do so. Losing that trust of course has consequences (as witnessed by the bad endings. That "Violent" tag really carries here).

2) Choice Mechanic: 3/5

This is where I started having my doubts about the game. Some of the choices you make through interaction with Quinn made since to me (being careful before you go down a dark hallway, etc.) and some others made NO SENSE AT ALL. It almost seemed like the game punishes you for being careful and doing the right thing. Quinn at times doesn't seem to understand that we are trying to help him! So frustrating.

Oh yeah, another mechanic in this game refers to the title itself: "STAY". Basically means that when you leave the game, you are leaving Quinn himself. Leave for a long time, and he loses all faith in you and wants nothing to do with you. I get this mechanic, but it's annoying for people like myself who don't have much free time with work, responsibilites etc. (Although i am typing this long review out...oops). Moving on.

3) Puzzles: 1.5/5

Oh boy, so many things to say on this one. Some of the puzzles you have to do which aid in Quinn's escape include things like breaking down a wall by choosing specific bricks, moving chess pieces to correct spaces on a board, you get the idea.

Let's talk about puzzles in general. I personally think that you should be able to have ALL the clues available to solve the puzzle in the game itself, wouldn't you? Well no, not here. You literally have to Google search some of the puzzles in order to figure them out. One example is that if you are not multi-lingual (like at least 4 languages), you will NOT be able to figure out one of the puzzles on your own. I'm dead serious. That is absolutely horrible game design and is my main issue with this game. If you have to Google search the game's puzzles, then what is the point of playing the puzzles at all??

Some of the puzzles are indeed great and were lots of fun to solve. It's just a shame that my experience was ruined by the awful puzzles that i had to do as well.

4) Overall Assessment: 3/5

I'll mention some other stuff here: Soundtrack is great, art style is fantastic, Quinn's a good character, and I don't regret playing this game.

STAY is a game that can be improved, maybe even have a remake with better puzzles and better choice design. The potential is there, and I am still grateful to the developers for the experience. However, the way the game is now, i cannot recommend this to anyone who wants a good adventure/puzzle experience.

STAY has been a great discovery! I'm not used to this type of games and I really enjoyed this unique experience!
A pleasure to watch, to listen, to read and to play!
Sometimes I wanted to slap the protagonist in the face but then I started caring and worring about him somehow...weird but interesting and highly engaging!

Loved to see the other players' choices: sometimes you think your are taking the unconventional path, but you actually didn't and it makes you reflect about yourself.. Didn't expect that at all!

I struggled a bit with some of the puzzles but that's the fun part for me! (And thank you community!)

So I've had the chance to play the game before launch at a games convention in Vienna, and I knew immediately that I'd buy it as soon as possible. I'm early into the game and I'm enjoying it a lot so far. I am a big sucker for tough puzzles, so I think the difficulty is exactly right for me. The story-telling is top notch, atmosphere is creepy. I feel like one of those escape room operators, in a good way.

I'd encourage everyone to really listen to the game when they say you should use head phones, it's a lot of fun to play it that way.

Don't make the mistake of waiting until you "have time" like I did. Just dive in.

This game has many flaws, I will admit that but it also has a lot of Soul. So much emotions were poured into this game and there are more endings than most would think. I think the creator made this with his heart and I personally enjoyed my 8 hour run. I finished it in one sitting, the price is worth it and there's many outcomes. I grew attached to the character and I enjoyed my run. For this, it gets my approval.

This is my first review and probably will be my last, that's just how much STAY made an impact on me that I had to comment on it. I watched MBH's playthrough on youtube and, halfway through I knew I had to get the game (and the DLC; the soundtrack is beautiful, for lack of better word). The story, the relationship you forge with Quinn, and most importantly the amount of heart and soul that was poured into STAY are all part of an experience you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

Starting with the small stuff: response choices may seem a bit limited at first, but I didn't think they were too unrealistic to say, and you get plenty of interesting dialogue (and items with surprisingly educational descriptions) to convince you to keep playing. The puzzles are a tough, but I still found them fun; there are really only two that I would say could've used an extra clue and admittedly I needed friends' help with them while streaming (the wall and the map; anyone who didn't grow up playing Minesweeper would understandably look at the former like "???" so I was lucky in that sense). They did push out a mercy update that allowed chat fastforwarding, puzzle skip for repeat playthroughs, and a hint for the map puzzle which made hunting all of the endings 50x easier so thank you for that.

Onto speaking about the core of STAY-- as someone who is pretty introverted and suffers from depression, I thought the representation within Quinn IMO was perfectly captured. However, judging by the negative reviews here I have a feeling that it was captured too perfectly and that may be one of the reasons why people became annoyed with Quinn. Reality check, if you were lucky enough to not have dealt with any like so, to plainly put, depressed people are not fun company to be around, period. More often than not, it's hard to understand them and get them to trust and understand you/your good intentions. They are stubborn and annoying to put up with, you most likely will lose your patience and get exhausted with them pretty quick. Quinn was already depressed before the kidnapping, he was never the most warming nor empathetic guy, yet despite that (and he knows well he sucks at communication) he still tries his best to connect with the player. He tries to crack jokes even if they are grim, and use movie references often in hopes that the player will be able to make sense of what he's trying to communicate. He rambles often, but if he doesn't, he won't really have much else of a way to comfortably release his thoughts besides getting told "do this" "okay" "do that" "alright". He's got as much logic and common sense as one of the peacock puzzle wall's rotting bricks, but really wouldn't you be confused and anxious as he is if you were in the same situation? When you suddenly get kidnapped and the only connection to the outside world you had was a stranger whom you're not even sure is trustworthy or reliable, and your immediate next step could decide your fate (more on that below)? The player has to prove to Quinn that not only are they willing to connect with him, but that they have real interest in helping him escape as well, which I think is what people tend to forget pretty quick and their early attempts to bond with him end up resulting in lost bonding levels.

The endings are written with so much emotion that it actually compelled me to replay soon after to right what went wrong with my relationship with Quinn and get the best ending, and even then I wished that I could see him again in real life for that free beer.

Also it's really mean to say, but there are a lot of hilarious death sequences. See if you can catch 'em all.

To the developers-- I noticed that a large chunk of the negative reviews are coming from the Korean/Japanese community and it seems the unifying comment between them all, is that there is a considerable amount of typos and localization errors that make Quinn hard to understand and ultimately appreciate, including that it's better to just play the game in English. Cultural barriers may also have an impact if the media references Quinn uses are only directly translated from English to other languages without much extra social context, leading to them being much less appreciable (including the items, there is an abundance of references to Hindu/Greek/Chinese mythos but none for other Asian cultures, perhaps game resources could be changed when one changes language to include more relatable references?).

What is STAY?

First of all the tags don't reflect what STAY really is, which is undoubtedly 'Choose your Own Adventure'. More importantly though 'PUZZLES' are something I didn't expect when I was sold the game through prior advertising on games journalism sites and if this is a dealbreaker for anyone it's important to point out that they appear regularly to slow the pace of the narrative.

The Puzzles

The Puzzles are presented without hints and only elements of their aesthetic and mechanics to lead you to a solution. Most of the time this works well but there is at least one Puzzle that the vast majority of Gamers will have to Google to find a solution for. Possibly more importantly to those who care about story, the puzzles don't pretend to make any sense. They don't exist within the logic of the game world and Quinn himself doesn't comment on their existence at all. Through the course of the game the presentation and circumstances that these puzzles are found in become difficult in terms of suspension of disbelief, to reconcile. More on this later.

The Story & Writing

Without spoiling anything, STAY tells the story of a man named Quinn who wakes up in strange circumstances, not knowing why he's trapped in unfamiliar surroundings and with only a mysterious connection to You, the player, through a computer. The central conceit of the game and its story is mostly acceptable, although believability suffers the longer the game goes on. It doesn't matter why we're the ones talking to Quinn, only that we are. Quinn certainly gets over the fact that a random stranger seems to be talking to him through an IM chat while he explores his surroundings. And he tells us the things he's seeing and doing, some of which we actually see him do through animated cutscenes or Pixel Art still images. Sometimes he'll tell us even in moments where it makes very little sense for him to be typing away on a device to do so.

Quinn himself is, unfortunately, not a very likeable or interesting character. Even accepting his profession as a therapist . he waxes poetic, references movies and chats in a way very few people, if any, would ever write or talk. It's not constant but Quinn's thoughts often come across as nonsensical, not confused or scared as might be acceptable of someone in his situation. The story itself doesn't help this as around half way through the game the theme and mood sharply veer into the fantastic. For me, this is where I checked out as far as emotional investment into Quinn or his story and I'll comment further on this in the Spoiler-specific section. STAY feels underwritten, under designed, under thought. The issues of Depression, Anxiety, Loss and Isolation are implied, not discussed and STAY has nothing at all to say about them that we as readers or players can't infer for ourselves in regular life.

Finally, my most significant criticism for STAY's writing is in its coherence. Simply put, the narrative is all over the place. The theme and tone of the game seem to change at random, even the setting is questionable at different points during the game and by the end it's unlikely that players who began the game with one thing in mind will even recognize STAY as being anything like what they were set up for. In terms of writing, the first few 'Chapters' of any work are meant to describe to the reader what they're in for in the future. This doesn't mean that there can't be surprises and shifts later on but, unfortunately, STAY doesn't earn the shifts it makes.

Art and Visual Design

Visually speaking, STAY is inoffensive but not pleasant to look at as far as the IM chat that we spend most of the game with. If you don't like high contrast, neon blue and white highlights it may prove visually fatiguing by the end. Personal preferences aside, Quinn is rendered very inconsistently across the separate mediums we see him, namely Still scenes, animated 'Overworld' movement and the 'LIVE' Camera that we see him through on the IM interface. The best of all of the aesthetic in STAY is by far the 'Overworld' presentation where Quinn roams his surroundings. Even animations seem very well done, so much so that I was impressed several times by the representation of certain action.
If only this was consistent across the game.
Quinn looks fundamentally different during the 'LIVE' camera feed and is unpleasant to look at. His animations are well represented in this aspect and even reflect what he says he is doing (most of the time), which I give a thumbs up for, however he often ends up looking neckless, like Cartman from Southpark, and the screen glow intended to provide visual depth to his face ends up separating itinto three different hues, all of which are jarring and odd as far as visual composition. The intent here is obvious and is at least partly due to the Pixel Art medium switching between distant to portrait aspects but it could have been improved on either way.

Spoiler Section

First of all, I feel that the game doesn't earn its shift in tone. By the time Quinn slides down a long, amusement park style slide into a new section of the house it essentially abandons any set up and interest that the modern connection of chatting to him through an IM might have brought. STAY doesn't exist in the real world or even an approximation of it. In fact, Quinn doesn't actually seem to be interested in escaping the house and that at least does seem to be clear fairly early on, especially when the roof is found and there is no discussion of what he sees outside, beyond the roof and the surroundings of the house. Quinn is more interested in lamenting his life, whining (no matter how understandably) and saying things that don't make much sense in the circumstances or context of the situation he's in. Unfortunately, the faux urgency of the '13 hour' timer around the cats neck plays against this.....even though the gimmick of STAY is that you can leave Quinn alone. And as is the case with most gimmicks, leaving Quinn alone doesn't really seem to have any appreciable effect on him at all except for him to give up and smash the computer or phone OR kill himself. And if this does occur he will ignore it anyway when you resume to try again, further cheapening the effect.
Worse, the 13 hours instantly refutes any meaningfulness in the STAY mechanic of 'Stayed' or 'Away'. Nothing will happen if 13 hours has passed in total, after all and as long as you don't leave Quinn for too long nothing at all will happen. Or at least I don't think it does. It may be that beating the game with less than 13 hours passed is how the player earns one of the endings. If so, bravo, although I'm not sure this is worth the gimmick as is.
Finally, the abrupt shift into fantasy undermines most of the story for me. We're lead to believe Quinn is abducted but when he confronts his abductor.....the antagonist sprouts tentacles for no apparent reason and the player is lead to the absolute worst part of the game, blindly choosing dialogue options as if we are Quinn's conscience. If you fail here you have to sit through the entire sequence again, including completing the Photo Puzzle, before you can try again.
Quinn seems to be waking up out of a stupor here. I wondered if he was dreaming, dead or even....virtual. None of the above is ever implied and never explored. The ending I did get implies that Quinn's girlfriend was hit by a truck and she died....but what does this have to do with Quinn abandoning his patients? We understand that he's distraught but the game ignores a gold mine of character development and opportunities to make Quinn a deep, complicated and imperfect character in order to simply make him a grieving partner who faces an unreal tentacle beast and literally never escapes the house he was abducted to, leaving the player and their role to feel incredibly irrelevant.

This game isn't that good it’s actually kinda terrible to be completely honest and i wanted to like this game i even sank 7 hours into it hoping it to be good but yet it didn't become good in the end i even replayed it so i beat this game twice to hope it would be good and yet it didn't so to show you why I think this game sucks i'm going to make a pros and cons list

pro's
------
- it has plenty of funny death scenes
- 7 endings (that are basically the same)
- dialog or messages can be funny, philosophical, and is full of references
that pretty much it on the pros
- the animation was flawless
-music and sound effects aren't too bad
cons
------
- this game's description is misleading because leaving the game doesn't affect anything in means of the story it doesn't even affect the "dialog" at all in fact, i think it's just for 1 of the endings but i'm not sure
- this game is like a crappier version of emily is away because it makes you think your decisions affect the whole story line even though it's going to be the same exact storyline just with the ocasional new dialog
- the main character doesn't even listen to you sometimes when you tell him to not or to do something because it will kill him, i added this part in because this leaves so many gaps for opportunity which could spice up the story a bit
- their were so many random event that happened in the story even most of the rooms and items are completely bizarre and random
- don't get me, wrong this concept was original and pretty good but the game doesn't even acknowledge or involve the concept at all and i think they only named the game stay so they can do one of those movie things where at the end it says the name of the game
- the most stupid part about this whole game that every one in the comments talk about are the puzzles, THEY ARE TOO DAMN HARD these puzzle have no explanation no direction all they do is throw you right in and these puzzles can be confusing and super obsucure and the puzzles alone can proably take more hours than the game itself if the internet was out and you couldnt look up a guide

that's basically all i can think of off the top of my head there are definitely more cons and a very few more pros but i can't think of anything else and don't buy it even if you think maybe you may like this game and everyone else hates it because that's what i did and now i'm down 15 bucks to buy we happy few

edit: now that i'm thinking about it this entire game modo is a complete lie because it says every choice makes a difference in his life that only comes true fifth of the time the rest is literally the choice you could have chosen which would have ended you up in the same position just with a different puzzle.... of and the main character is a piece of crap. oh and if it says that i played less than 7 hours that's because something is wrong with my steam and my hours keep going down on my games and i don't know why

Edit 2: i decided to check on this review 2 years later and fix all the spelling errors i made, and i noticed my total playtime now says 4.4 hours, i don't know why this is but originally i played 14 hours (first 8 for the first ending and the last 6 for the second ending, since i knew all answers to all the puzzles i shaved off 2 hours)

The ending to this game confused the #### out of me, but I still want you to play it anyways. I understand what it was showing us, do not understand what that means for everything we went through.

A friend of mine recommended this game to me, and I definitely do the same. It gets tricky sometimes, specially with some puzzles, and you have to be very patient (a lot!). But the whole story is fantasticly addictive, Quinn is a pain in the arse but it's really difficult not to try and keep up with him. All in all, a great narrative adventure I recommend to anyone fond of deep stories that go beyond just a game and that really get to you.

STAY is a roller coaster of emotions and probably the most intense chat i've ever had in my life. The old-school graphics, sound and narrative makes you feel immersed in to the thriller atmosphere of the game.
It's up to you to help the character, who wakes up alone in a house full of traps escape and at the same time you have to establish a relantionship of trust and bonding with him.
The writing is brilliant and inteligent throughout the entire game, The casual conversation with the character is deep and lots of times very funny and sarcastic, with lots of cinema, literature, mythology and history references which makes the story even more intriguing. I like the way sensible subjects, like menthal health, depression, loneliness, human connections and suicide are approached in STAY.
The puzzles are complex and tricky and sometimes you feel frustrated, but i found out to be the kind of challenges that tests my limits and imagination in the way i like, because you dont have the answers on a plate and when completed you have an amazing feeling of adrenaline and satisfaction.
I was hooked for hours playing this story full of surprises. I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes storys that makes you feel apart of the narrative and challenges your brain.

Excellent screenplay.
I had read about this game, but due to lack of time I forgot it until I heard the comments of a work colleague.
This game is highly recommended for pixel art lovers, and it is good way to keep your brain sharp and away from the "cheat meal" entertainment.
During the first few minutes, the screen flicker frequency is a bit annoying, the game does not allow us to adjust that in the settings, it is the only thing that I would change.

I am new to Steam and went straight for this game as it came highly recommended by a friend. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this game - it is special in that it is more of a journey than a game, really. A journey with the main character but also an exploration of your own feelings. The mechanics are such that it is easy to be immersed in the plot and Quinn feels alive, a real human being. Whether you like his personality or not is like everything in life, a matter of opinion, although the fact that he is so annoying already gives you hints about what is going on in the plot. In any case, what can't be denied is that there is nothing quite like this game out there. The art and music are top notch, the storyline remarkable - this game has soul. It almost feels like a pilot for a TV show, one in which you can actually intervene and influence the next episode. The idea of using real-time matches the story perfectly and it is well executed to contribute to the air of mystery and anxiety. If you're looking for something different, are interested in (or have experienced) depression, anxiety, loss, rejection and how we react to those feelings. or are simply addicted to Netflix then look no further! One of the games of the year for me.

Terrible experience. This game was doing great up to chapter 19 at which point it requires you to find your way a procedurally generated mirror maze with absolutely no useful hint and a naviguation system specifically made to enrage you. Never again. I stopped playing after 3 hours of trying to find a solution. This and the wall maze have clearly not been properly playtested before the release of the game.

This game has totally tied me up. The first time I played STAY, I was a little bit confused about the story. But I felt with Quinn. Sometimes I got crazy about him. Didn't understand why he is so down. But the longer I played the game the more I wanted to help Quinn getting out of the house.

The puzzles where not that hard besides the wall puzzle and the mirror maze. Yes the wall puzzle drives me crazy but that's how puzzles should like. I don't get it why poeple write bad reviews because of this.

I am very grateful to Appnormal's team for this game! I'll play it till I got all ends!

A wonderful game that will make you keep playing it, becuase you're actually the co-star!! You must help Quinn to survive and discover the truth that lies behind his kidnapping. I love the idea of not actually controlling the character, but influencing him through the decitions you make, I think it's something fresh and makes you want to undercover the multiple endings this game offers.
Soundtrack it's really good, perfectly for the purpose it has and creates an atmosphere of mistery and tension. Graphics are also good, I must admit I love pixel art and I enjoyed the style in this game.
What I REALLY loved and must admit I was looking for it: difficult puzzles!!! FINALLY!! All puzzles are really smart and with excellent design, if you're up for the challenge, then this game offers you just that; honestly, some of the best puzzles I've seen in this kind of games. It was a pleasant surprise.
Having nothing negative to say about it, I'll replay it in order to get all the endings I'm missing.
Definitely a game you have to try, give it a chance!

PCGamerGal

A lot of the puzzles make no sense and don't even give you a hint, which is SUPER frustrating as you can get stuck on one puzzle for hours. The deal breaker for me was in chapter 22, you are giving the main character advice in a tense situation and it is insta-kill after insta-kill without so much as a warning. But it gets worse: then it reloads at the *beginning* of the chapter. I went through the beginning of chapter 22 six times to get back to this advice-giving part, and if I said one thing wrong (and again it gives you no hints as to what is right or wrong, so you have to just keep trying different combinations of lines), boom insta-kill. At that point, I said f this.

If you have absolutely all the time in the world and enjoy dying randomly with no rhyme or reason as to why, then go ahead and buy this game. If you are a normal person that is not clairvoyant, save your money as this game will just aggravate you.

Efflora

This game started out fine, but it lost me as it went on.

My two issues are with some of the puzzles, and the issue of checkpoints.

The chapters themselves are checkpoints. They're usually rather short, so that may not seem like an issue, remember that the game runs at its own speed. If you accidentally reach a game over state, you have to wait for Quinn to type out his responses before you can try something else. This was a huge issue in one puzzle, where failure is death, and it happened at the end of the chapter. If you screw up, and you almost certainly will, you gotta wait.

And onto the puzzles, some were actually pretty good. The bad ones, though, were really bad, or downright nonsensical. The brick wall puzzle was the first of these. The map puzzle was even worse, and required information outside of the game itself to even understand. Maybe you're some sort of geographical scholar who'll know that stuff, but I wasn't. Then there's the one I mentioned with game overs in it...

And I didn't like the ending, either.

It was great! Hard to find entertaining games that actually try something different. We desperately need more of stuff like this in the gaming industry. While it does have a few flaws (like the brick puzzle) it did achieve uniqueness while keeping high level of quality. The story is great, the protagonist interesting and FINALLY a game with actually challenging puzzles. I will highly recommend this game to all my friends.

I will be keeping an eye on the developers of this title. Hope to see many more good titles! ^^

While I haven't fully completed the game, I've played it long enough to venture an opinion. I purchased the game because I was intrigued by the concept of helping a stranger with escaping from his situation; however, I don't find the character likable at all. Also a lot of the puzzles don't make sense because clues are not given. Here's an example: You find yourself dealing with a wall made out of bricks and there's a peacock strutting on the wall. Clues on what to do are completely absent. A lot of the puzzles are like that. It's also not cool to get mocked when you stop playing the game for a few days. You come back and the protagonist throws a fit and ends your friendship...

All in all, I would not recommend this game and I wish I had asked for a refund prior to playing it for more than 5 hours. 1 out of 5 stars...

It's not that I disliked this game. On the whole, I really enjoyed it! I'm a huge fan of games like this, especially the Dangan Ronpa and Zero Escape series, and any game where "you" as a player are involved is likely to catch my attention.

However, I have a couple of bones to pick with this game. Firstly, that mirror maze puzzle in chapter 19 was insufferable. I had to guess my way through it even with the help of the filled dots that told you how close you were getting to the exit. Even if the game had a mini map to help you keep track of where you'd been, like in Mystery Dungeon games, that would have made it a bit less of a nightmare! The ruler/map puzzle was also very infuriating.

Secondly, the dialogue choices. I found myself getting frustrated when I made a choice that seemed sensible but it made Quinn mad with me anyway, especially when that led me directly into a dead end. It seemed like he was being contrary just to be contrary at some points.

However, the pixel art style, the bond/trust mechanic, the soundtrack, and the overall idea were great. I just wish that some of the puzzles and the STAY mechanic were a little more forgiving! So overall, I couldn't say I'd outright recommend this game. BUT if you have the patience and enjoy difficult puzzles, it may just be worthwhile for you.

This game feels very "SAW-like" (the movies) but with more focus on dialog and puzzel solving, where you're job as the player is to help the kidnapped man survive, both physically AND mentally.

STAY also reminds me of the mobile games "Lifeline", in which you're also helping a character.

Some of the puzzles can take a lot of time to figure out, but despite that, I really like this game. :)

The writing is bad. Imagine going to bed, being assaulted by a stranger, dragged to a dark room in the night by an assailant, then you wake up, then immediately get on a computer to talk to strangers online.
Would you bother taking the time and having the presence of mind to use verbose language? Spellchecking your words? Describing your abysmal setting with more flowery imagery than the peeling wallpaper of your shabby surroundings?

I rate this as a don't buy.

This game is really good. I really felt a conncection to quinn. The story is very complicated and there are many choices to make, which seem to make a decent impact. It's also very neat that the game works with real time, but it takes a bit of tension out because if you mess up completely quinn just dies and you have to restart, death is not an ending or smth like that. Regardless, it still feels like you are communicating with a real trapped person. The only annoying and sometimes tedious thing are the puzzles (And the sometimes not so good game design), sometimes they just happen too often and are a bit too hard in my opinion, but if you like a lot of hard puzzles then that probably won't be a problem for you. This is a really interesting, sad, and well made game. Maybe im going to try to get some of the other endings. This is a decent game.
