This game has no single player and the online server list is completely empty. This game is unplayable and should not be bought. To be clear, i do not mean the servers are empty of players but rather there are no servers at all.
You would be better off burning your money than buying this games because at least you will get more benefits from that then buy this game.

This is an initial review based upon the Closed testing build of Stone Rage - Alpha v0.2- Played in July/August 2020

All potential buyers should know that this survival game is loosely orientated around the Stone Age era, and aims to balance technologies of the period against a game with enough functionality to keep things fun. For example, there is some building available that may not be considered historically accurate at time of my review, but remember this is a game and as it stands- it's hell of a lot of fun. (If you take offence at constructing buildings that are not 100% historically accurate this is perhaps not for you, but you will be missing out I assure you.)

The game itself:
I and a few friends sunk literally hours into this over a few days of closed testing. (We effectively made it our own community event!) We lost sleep as a consequence. All the major facets of a really good survival game are there already, in fact i'ts bloody well polished considering this was before EA release!

Whats in the game at this stage?
- Multiple tiers of weapons and tools
- Multiple tiers of building styles.
- Some animals to hunt- lots more to come.
- Multiple biomes, Forest, Desert etc
- Anti-cheat system (in-house written I believe)- R+ so take note other AAA developers!

A couple of things not there just yet:
- Clan/Guild mechanics (for general building ownership, but the 6 of us playing together worked around this- doors could be placed & have players granted access via an upgrade tool, so that really was not an issue. We just elected who did the building and who did the gathering etc.
- Some form of Animal summoning/taming (So intrigued & excited for this..)

A note on the Developers because this is important when considering EA purchases:
As part of this testing phase the developers wanted to stress test the servers and get as many folks online as possible to gather overall data on server load before this goes out to the masses on Steam. To everyone’s satisfaction "we broke it". Within minutes they adjusted settings and brought the servers back up. Lots of data was gathered during this phase that will only lead to performance improvements. Throughout the testing process they also engaged their testers on their discord. I have to say this is one brave set of developers- they handed out testing keys to anyone that wanted one- with no NDAs preventing negative/unfair content being publicly released and this goes to show that even at this stage- it puts some other EA projects to shame. I took the time to report a few bugs, and within a few hours these were acknowledged, listed and assigned on their GitHub. Many are now fixed.

Want to see what we got up to?:

Check out my buddy Bloodstalker101 recording on Twitch when we played during testing- https://www.twitch.tv/videos/696734147

As you will see there is the odd issue, but we still had an absolute blast- and the issues we encountered are already being addressed by the devs. Else join the devs discord yourself and you will see how actively engaging and responsive they are, not to mention what’s still to come!

To close- I really can’t find a major fault in this game considering what state it's currently in and the size of the dev team, and its my choice to purchase it after its release is because i want to see it go further. Well done Mountainwheel Games, and thanks for letting me play a small part in your project!

I don't know how to play this game. I'm honest, but I like it. It's this good feeling you get in every survial game you don't know and still need to learn all the things. I'm lost, but I love it. Reminds me a lot about Ark, when you kill a dodo with all your strength and eat poison berries becaus they look delicious.

TL:DR - It works, sublimely. PVE and the basics of PVP right now. Huge potential. Talented, passionate devs who have literally put themselves in financial debt to develop this project.

Okay children, settle down by the stone fire and I will tell you a story that was told to me by my Father when I was your age, and his Father before him.

There once was a time - back in the dark ages, when Early Access titles had become synonymous with the words scam, frustration and failure. Sure, there were lots of gems amongst the rough. There were more than the fair share of larger studios who could turn an entire subreddit from eager, supportive geeks into the most hostile and affronted beasts.

The dark ages endured for many years. Thousands, if not millions were affected. Faith was at an all-time low. There were many of us who did not make it.

But, something happened. The smallest of things. They of our ancestry speak of the first Men, those few amongst our kind who found it. A spark. A miniscule flicker of light which cracked into existence amongst the endless and cold void.

There were some of us who moved towards the light. We who had gripped firmly onto the final sliver of faith within our fractured souls and refused to give in to the vast nothing. And closer we got. And we saw that it was not a spark, but a FIRE. A seething flame of red - as red as the mountains of our ancestors and the blood in our veins. A venomous fire, crackling and raging against the overwhelming despair of blackness, it's fragile form fighting to stay alive in its few infant seconds of existence. And we saw that it was good. And it invited us ever closer. And our bodies warmed with a replenished hope. Our minds were stirred from their dull slumber. The fire brought us together, those of us who found our way. And we turned to one another, and we knew what must be done.

And from generation to generation, from those few brave explorers we bear the burden of lighting the fires to lead our people here. To our rightful place.

Home.

+ Art Design perfect, nothing out of place or feels 'asset-flipped'
+ Performance. Flawless even on the highest settings.
+ Lighting and Shadows very impressive. Some beautiful dawn/dusk shots to be had.
+ Crafting system. Game's literally just been released and there is more here already than full release games. AND THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO COME, ITS CRAZY
+ Friendly, passionate devs who have sunk their own money and time into this project.
+ PVP - the weakest element by far, and the devs freely admit this. However, with your help they will flesh this out and they have listed a whole host of features they wish to implement.
+ PVE - I mean, for a newborn early access title made by a handful of devs it is actually very impressive how many items you can craft. It's all there to start you - tools, weapons, bandages, bota bags, backpacks, huts, fires, bows, clothes, construction etc.
+ PVE challenge. What I mean by this is you need to look after your physical needs such as water and hunger and health. The starting inventory is limited so can be quite unforgiven as you will need to prioritise items (you can work your way to several backpacks). And its obvious that some deal of thought has went into the crafting metrics.
+ The little details. It is clear to me as a collector of survival multiplayer/ rpg games that the devs have studied extensively and know what they want. It's the things like being able to quick drop out your inventory by dragging, and it makes a nice and logical sound whilst doing so. It's the way the wind blows dust trails off the desert floor. The way that birds caw in the forest. The perfect rays of orange light coming through the bush as the sun sets. The pleasing footstep and eating sounds. The physical dropping of items on the floor (some get bagged but hey, no one is perfect)
+ Potential. And this really is the big one, guys. Because what I see so far really excites me for the future of this game. More so than any other survival multiplayer that I can think of that is on offer right now. It clearly has very talented devs. All they need is time and your help through sales. I think once they implement some of the nice features and PVP they intend, then its basically a prehistoric baby of ARK / RUST / CONAN mixed with something else that I can't quite put my finger on. But hey, if you buy the game maybe you can tell me :)

I must admit, Stone Rage at its core is pretty good and has potential. The game is in EA so it's lacking depth and progression but is still extremely enjoyable. Even though there is not much to do at launch, Stone Rage has a good majority of items to craft and offers a solid base building system.

The PVP and current raiding system in this game is very basic for right now, but works pretty well, and full-fills my open world survival PVP crave. The developers are already expanding the raiding system which is a very positive step in the right direction.

PVE is a bit lackluster right now, but the devs are already working on adding more creatures and biomes for players to explore and fight.

Where this game really shines, is the development team behind it. Coming from other EA survival titles, I am not really used to seeing devs answering majority, if not all of the communities questions, or even communicating at all. You can tell the development team behind Stone Rage are extremely ambitious and communicative. They also listen to the communities feedback, and balance/add what they inquire in a very reasonable amount of time. I believe they are planning on dropping a decent sized balance/content update within a few days, which should really improve the game.

Overall, I would recommend Stone Rage, to anyone who enjoy's a solid sandbox, open world PVP/PVE experience, due to it's extreme potential and caring dev team.

Game's current state is too much ''barebones''. There is no depth and nothing to do in pve servers. Also, I didnt like the invisible walls on the map. For now just no. Im gonna check again after 6 months.

Game says its : Online PVP "and" Online Co-op. Some of the ones who are supposedly involved with the making of the game are saying they have NO Single-Player Mode planned. Well, Co-op does mean that a player will be creating a game map on their own PC for them and a friend to play. Or do I not have the concept correct of what Co-op means.
So with this in mind, I do not recommend the game because it does not fulfill what it says it offers.

I bought this game along with 3 other people. We were planning on having another 20 or so join us until we logged in to find about 50 servers which each allow 50 people. Half of which are PVE only.

At the time I am writing this (about 16 hours after release) the highest populated server has 11 people and is a PvE server. No other server has more than 8 people. Many are completely empty. I checked throughout the 16 hours since launch and it was pretty much the same the entire time.

My first and biggest complaint is the number of servers. Far too many to support this low of a population. They should've started smaller and expanded as needed.

My second complaint is the excessive number of PvE servers in a new game with little content.

My third complaint is the lack of game content. (Not unexpected for an early access game)

In my experience with these types of games I typically find that players are the content. Whether that's PvE or PvP. You have to at the minimum have either good game content or good player content. With players spread across servers like this that forces you into the having good game content bracket. Which this game is just a shell at the moment and has very little content. Why then they even have PvE servers blows my mind.

Then lack of people on PvP servers will drive away any potential there.

TLDR:
In my opinion this half-baked turd should have stayed in closed testing and continued to refine gameplay around either PvE or PvP and then made a more concrete decision at launch by limiting the servers one way or the other.

Trips

Could not get a connection to game servers. Additionally could remap some controls but not movement controls. W,A,S,D movement keys do not work well for left handed players. Remap of these keys is kind of a basic function that I would expect from a game.

06/26/22 Update

The game is DEAD no update since 2020 and no servers as well. You can't run a dedicated server or pay for a hosted server so you can't play this game at all. Another dead game added to the blacklist of games that devs have abandoned.

Would not advise getting this right now it is very very basic even for an early alpha. Seems very little to do in the game apart from spending 3 hours gathering wood and fibre etc. to build a small house. Resource gathering is badly balanced didnt see one other person on the pvp server we tried. Save your money and maybe check to see if it gets any better but considering it took 5 years to produce this i would doubt it.

Mini Grim Gaming
Mini Grim Gaming

Has resource balance problems with needing 30 wood logs for a floor and 20 for a club. Spent near my whole time finding the resources i needed to build a house with bushes and rocks all being Random Gen with what you get. Keep having to make a new axe cos it breaks so easy(Upgraded Axe lasts a little longer but not worth the time or resources). Big animals seem to be stuck in trees. Cant remove tree stumps and i managed to get stuck over 5 times so i had to kill myself. Theres areas of the map that has no sound. I know its a EA game but i think it been released to soon with very little content and some of the stuff thats in the game you can't use but don't know that until you waste your time making it. I will update my review as time passes and hope that the Dev's stick at it and it gets better.

Windows 10 ONLY game. People without windows 10 cant get on the servers.

05/08/2021 - DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. It is not playable at the current time, and has not been for a while.

Gruff
Gruff

Currently the game feels very unfinished. Limited resources and detail to the world. The crafting is boring because it tells you what all the required items are needed to make an item. So no learning. Basically it's running about looking for limited resources which graphically don't look much different from the terrain. Threat in the game seems to be none to the point I threw myself of a cliff just to feel somthing (and of course died). No single player, you are forced into playing on a server.
The game does however have potential and I may well revist it in a year or so time (currently refunded). But as at the end of August 2020, I can not recommend this game. Rather wait and see if it gets improved or if the developers take the money and run (I hope not the latter as this could be a great game).

Although this game is still in an early stage it's already fun to gather some ressources build your own base and do some pvp. I am curious to see which new features will be implemented in the future and I'm really looking forward to play as one of the hopefully soon playable animals.

ThaRuckus

Very fun. Start with nothing build whatever you can imagine. Its EA so its not done for sure but the devs seem open to all ideas. They listen and respond. Some balancing needed as well as some new features hopefully in works. Very good for a game that has been out for only a few days so far.

For a game written by a group of enthusiasts who are NOT backed by any game developer, I must say I like what I see.
Stone Rage is in early access and some may criticize the early access release and or long development time but as I wrote above (see the first paragraph), you need to generate funds to enlist a dedicated full-time team to work on the game.

I bought the game on release day and thoroughly enjoyed the concept. The Devs are constantly keeping us up to date with the latest developments and ladders of progression. I was amazed to watch one of the devs working on a bone knife and the time and effort it took to create. The landscapes are gorgeous with sunrises and sunsets that equal the beauty of the game.
If you are looking to play a finished game and complain that it is not, THEN STOP RIGHT THERE, no need to go any further, this isn't finished, BUT if you want to experience a game set in the stone (r)age and it's evolving creation, then HOP-ON and enjoy the ride.

Le'Chonk
Le'Chonk

Very unique and interesting concept. not a ton to do but it is ea. I certainly enjoy it but it is a little bit of a grind for resources if you want to build a base.

ZeroFks
ZeroFks

I love it. Plenty of potential. Decent survival game with the DEV team patching bi-weekly. PVP and PVE. Crafting, building, killing, raiding, looting, all playable in this games current stage and runs smooth. I'd recommend it for the current price.

Good job!!

Decided to try the game again.. can now play with no problem at all on Windows 7. Everything runs perfect and super smooth. I'm soooooo happy about that! Because I didn't have to change my entire operating system for one dumb game. But now I cannot be a woman. :-/ Who wants to be a boy? Lol! Let me know when the female characters are working again!!! From the pictures it looks like at some point they were.

Anyhow, I'm changing my negative review into a positive for now because it's awesome they fixed that.

Previous review:
Only works on Windows 10. :-( So until I get Windows 10 installed as a third OS and am able to try it out, I unfortunately can't recommend this. (As I have no intention of "upgrading" and removing my current version of Windows until I've tried out 10 thoroughly and am satisfied it is better.) All the other newest games work great with older versions of Windows.. this is the only one I've so far come across that does not. And you really shouldn't have to jump through hoops to play a game, so until older versions of Windows are truly obsolete to the entire gaming industry and no games work with them anymore, this was kind of a dumb move by the developers imho.

If I can be bothered to install Windows 10 soon and go to all that trouble just to play this single game, and it is really really good, I will change my rating. But honestly, it's just putting up huge stumbling blocks for people who might want to play this, and was a bad decision imho. If all the big studios are still making games that will run on older versions of Windows, your Indy game really should too. Also it seems pretty similar to Conan Exiles, so maybe I'll just go play that.

Christofon
Christofon

Very good basis for a survival RPG. Reminds me of Conan exiles in his early days.
Especially the setting is refreshing and exiting. The historic authenticity was something I was looking for, this is just awesome. I’m keeping a close eye to this game as I expect future updates to make it even better.

This game needs a lot that must be done (more area = bigger playfied is just one of them).
On the other side it's allready good playable for base building, making cloths, tools & weapons to hunt.
So if you are one of those players that support EA for promissing games then it's one of those you can support with good hope for the future. Have fun !
Keep on going dev's u are in the right direction to be succesfull.

Yes i recommend this game in its early stages.
There are a few bugs but nothing game breaking.
The team is small but regular with patch updates.
I feel this game has a great platform and has the potential to be an amazing game but definitely needs more support and feedback from us the community.
Graphics are nice and mechanics are close to being balanced.
The price could be a few bob lower but when the complete game is done it will definitely be worth its weight.

Do not forget that this game is in early access.
Another survival game, this one on the theme of the prehistoric period.
There are good and bad.
Graphics and gameplay are good.
More craft and animals are needed to make the game more interesting.
Structures require a lot of resources and farming.

Nevertheless this game has a very promising early start.

Jedi Monkey

I definitely like this game. I love the concept of this game. It has great potential. But it is a bit bare bones at the moment. I can see it having a decent future.
That being said. The grind? I don't mind a bit of grind, but this game is out of order. C'mon, devs why make a game painfully hard to get resources? And I stress painful! I was the only player on the Aussie servers and I still had trouble finding enough resources. What would happen if there were lots of people on the servers? Gathering nodes would be impossible. And don't get me started on chopping trees for logs??? OMG just increase the amount of logs given per tree already. You need to increase the amount of resources given drastically! Especially from trees! You have to increase the amount of logs. Nodes are scarce. Not to mention stone. Run miles and miles to gather stone to upgrade a couple of walls! Tools wear out too quickly. How many axes must one craft to build a house? Too many that's what! And doing something simple like building an adequate base, will take you days upon DAYS! So painful!
And those storage boxes cost way too much in wood. What are guys thinking? (30 logs for a medium size box 50 for a large) You must be kidding! Outrageous! Then the storage boxes hold so little. Why? You almost need another base just to store your storage boxes.
I spent hours upon hours building a 2x3 base mostly up to stone level. It was almost complete. It was fine when I logged in this morning. It was very satisfying to have it almost complete! (By the way the building mechanics are pretty cool! Well done.
I just logged on this afternoon to find my base half decayed and a lot of my loot gone. Oh, Thanks for the latest update! I love that one! :( Could have at least warned players of the importance of the decay bench! Which of course I hadn't crafted. I didn't really understand what it was for until seeing half my base and contents gone. Now I know! Nice one fellas!
And the thought of having to rebuild my newly built base under such painful conditions. Hmmm? No No No No No! There is no way in hell I am going to grind out another base again any time soon! I wont be back until you sort out some of the balancing issues. Work on the resource balancing please. That should be a priority!
You should not have bought in the decay system before getting the resource balance issue sorted out. Such a bad decision to bring that out so early! ! That update presently has killed the game for me. You should have concentrated on getting balancing correct first. Considering the servers are pretty quiet it was nice to see some signs of life as the decay system did not start until shortly after I started playing. There were old bases around which kind of made it feel like there was some life around the server. I am all for the decay system. I get it. But Who the hell wants to spend 8 hours a day gathering resources just to upkeep a base. My base decayed so quickly.
So that all being said. This game has a lot of promise to become something great!
I will be keeping an eye on it and checking back in the future. But for now I am going to take a long needed rest as my 35 hours was accumulated in just a few days.

Another point to note for the devs is when a base decays, the foundations and floor should decay last. At least that way all the loot doesn't disappear immediately. I may have kept playing if my foundation and storage boxes were still there. But I lost too much, and I cannot grind that out again.

Given time this game has the ingredients to become something special. I recommend giving this game a chance. I am eager to see what future updates bring. Hopefully more logs.

I was, in all sincerity going to give this a thumbs up. After the latest 2 "fixes," I just can't. Still way too many bugs and glitches to name. The game has rendering issues. For some reason after any hotfix, there is a server wipe. So, with every update this game does, you have to start over. To me, that is simply too much.

Been following this game for a lot of time. Props to the devs for never losing hope and keeping the progress alive. From an art perspective the stuff is on point, there.s still work in progress but their vision is on the right track. Gameplay wise there is room to expand but talking to the devs they assured me they have plans to develop Exciting PVP modes and more in depth fauna behaviors. As it stands it's a strong foundation i'm willing to support further.

Was not at all intuitive, though marginally functional (just pretty clunky and slow). You start with nothing, which is fair cause this is the stone age we're playing in, but you also start with about 20% food point and it lasts under 5 minutes before you die. Never really got to making much so I can't tell you if it's worth playing once you get past this point, although there are some pretty cool masks and stuff. I also never ran into any animals or edible plants so not much to hunt/forage in that five minutes if I did want to eat something. Haven't played it in a long time, I wonder if any decent updates have come... but I'm not checking anytime soon.

Archivist

I avoided making a Review about this game since it was still such EA, but recent events have pushed my hand. Beware! Do not give Reok your money. He has no intent on finishing the game and has been confronted by many of the games financial backers (continued donators like myself) and instead of properly addressing their numerous concerns.....he's been dropping the ban hammer and then berating the individual he just removed. It's become a lord of the flies situation and forced me to consider legal action with Pillsbury, LLC. 'I' was foolish to continually donate...don't be foolish yourself and buy the game.
Aside from Reok's non-intent to complete the project, using Covid lockdowns as as excuse, the game is horribly unbalanced. Tools and other crafting items take an exorbitant amount of time and RSS to craft, as do the building pieces...and yet the RSS drops are incredibly low. The imbalance of the game doesn't even address sheer incompleteness of it. The game is so bad right now, they had to drop the price just hoping to get anyone to buy it. Nearly all the servers are completely empty...so do not plan on playing with others either. Lastly, be very aware that nearly all the screenshots are done by Devs, on dev branch...and NOT what you will experience in game.....that's called bait and switch. I play lot's of EA, this is not EA...Pre-Alpha is fine....this is still in the concept phase. At the very least....wait till after it's full release (if it ever makes it) before giving Reok your money.

Edit to Below: ....DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!

I've since found that there are no servers now available, and lacking in a solo player/co-op mode, the game is now unplayable. When I complained to Steam about this, they stated that as I had already played the game, they would not refund my money. Poor show of support, it has to be said

Overall, the game is good. You wander through a beautiful world and, as in all survival sandbox games, you harvest resources, craft materials and progress thus. It would be good to see some more choice in the character creation, and female characters would be good too.

I may have missed it yet, but a world map of some form would be very helpful; at least the sun rises in the east, sets in the west and the north of the land seems to be a snowy area, whilst the south is desert...who needs a map?

It is a bit odd to find all the dangerous animals seemingly pierced by a tree and unable to move. Get close enough and they'll still damage you though. it is possible to kill them if you have sufficient arrows, but there ain't much sense of achievement in that, is there. But by far my biggest gripe is that there is only one server up (that I have seen) and very little traffic.

Give it a go...it is only in Alpha yet and if the devs can stay true to their word and keep improving things it should be a great game

This is an excellent game, and one that I enjoyed playing....for all of the two hours that I could play. Since then there have been no servers online, and with no solo play mode, nor ability to run my own server, the game is lost....total scam. It don't cost much to buy, but do not waste your money

Although the game has lots of flaws it's worth playing , biggest problem is dying really quickly from hunger not enough food to be found early on crafting is pretty easy and construction is easy once you figure it out .....
