This game is actually not bad at all this little fun game but I think they kind of either ran out of ideas or just abandoned this game in a way cuz there hasn't been an update since last year. Game has good improvements as far as stability optimization. There's also takes me back to the early 90 days like playing Mario Kart. I think the game would be actually good if they would finish it cuz it's been early access for about 2 years now. So I'm assuming that they have banded this game and no future updates or they're slowly getting updates. But this game could be a very good retro or steam. And will it expect to see more soon. But this game is recommended if you're bored and on a rainy day and you just want to play something small

Here is a Steam Deck review:

Ah, Super Indie Karts. For a game that has been on Steam for 7.5 years, there's not a whole lot of content. The content that's there is fun, but it's really not a lot.
From Steam Deck perspective: This game would get either a ''Playable'' or ''Unsupported'' rating (Depending on how Valve feels when rating it). 2 things to keep in mind:
- It shows keyboard inputs in menus (Like: ''Press Z for mirrored tracks'', etc)
- It doesn't run the Steam Deck resolution natively, sides of the screen ''fall off''.

It's perfectly playable, besides that, not too intense on hardware either. But really keep in mind, a lot of the content is still missing (Cups/tracks etc) and after 7 years you just have to hope it's going to be finished before you retire.

Its good but needs work, the problem I have found is on every race you are doing great, then last lap they fly by you, this is annoying and this is on low setting it just needs little things sorted and it could be great, so tracks I am also not keen on, but with work it could be much better, good solid racer that still needs work done.

Please play Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart instead. This isn't a bad game. I just feel SRB2 Kart is better and its free.

awesome game. just keep in mind there are no ways to play online multiplayer as of now, August 17th 2022. You can only play split screen. The game is a blast and it NEEDS online matches with a ranking system. that would be nice.

Fun cart racing game. Wish there was a bit more to it, but enjoy it for what it is. Fun to play when you need a break from Mario Kart or your regular racing game.

An enjoyable kart racer that plays similar to SNES Mario Kart. Eagerly await more content and full release. Hopefully incoming patches which introduce more characters with different driving stats, graphical filters, drifting mechanics and/or widening of some tracks.

It's racing mechanics feel like trash compared to what's out there. Besides that it seems like it tries too hard to be a fun racing game, but the only fun thing is to see character you know. Some of the stages are simply annoying, for what seems to just be annoying. Others don't have a clear indication of where to go or what's part of the track and what not. Wish I hadn't spend the money

I have absolutely gotten my moneys worth on this one
Fantastic SNES style Mario Kart racing with modern enhancements and tons of weird disconnected indie characters that are lively and look very nice

Also I can race carts as A.R.E.S. So there's that

P.S. A few hours of play were offline and I just booted the game again and am loving it all over again

I honestly LOVE that there is a linux-compatible Mario Kart-like out there, and the game is really charming, but the controls simply are too bad : There is too much inertia to the vehicules, giving a feeling of poor precision, thus to pilot a soap bar. Add to this a drifting mechanic that works after a jump that is a bit too long and you get a super tacky boost that feels like controlling a MEGA SOAP BAR that BOOSTS INTO WALLS instead of the direction you'd like to go (because the boost release is quite poor too).

Take any other karting game (Mario, Sonic, Crash Team Racing -or any good platformer like Super Meat Boy or Celeste-) and you'll understand how reactive and precise controls NEED TO BE in order to make a skill game out of racing. Navigation need to be precise. Inertia needs to happen on drifts, less in normal conditions.

It is still playable though, but not enjoyable at this stage : LESS SOAP, MORE GRIP, MORE PRECISION. GIVE US CONTROL SO THAT DRIFTING MAKES SENSE. I hope the devs will see this comment.

-Going back to play Refract Studio's Distance-

You may see that this review shows 21 minutes played but that wont change the fact that the controls a trash like who uses the z key to accelerate? it should be w not z and it really doesnt feel like the tracks were made for this game even on 50cc i still found myself crashing into walls it just feels like the roads are made of ice its way to slippery with all to be said tough this is a good game except for the controls but the controls just ruin it for me tough i really like the jump mechanic especially how its used on the runbow track i think the character selection is nice except for mutant mudds you are missing one character tough it starts with a s and ends in a e lol anyway good game except for the controls they just ruin it for me.

YES! If you ever played ANY of the Mario Kart games (the original, Mario-Kart 64, etc.) and liked those, you'll love this. It's still got some content that needs to be added (racers, courses, cups, etc.), but those are coming.

Awesome in split-screen with friends too!

Cheesus F Christ

4-player local kart racer with graphics inspired by all generations of kart racers. There's no Mario or Sonic, but instead a whole bunch of indie characters. Great music, fun, robust graphics... What's not to love?
Still in Early Access with some missing features (like Battle Mode) but it's already a blast.

Update: the game keeps getting better and better! Battle Mode is now here, and a lot of bugs have been fixed. Did I mention how much I love this game?

Nostalgicbear
Nostalgicbear

I want to leave a negative review, but it feels harsh to do that. Even though I did not really enjoy the game myself, I appreciate the effort put in, and see the potential.

Pros
- Visually very nice
- Some cool & interesting characters

Cons
- Some of the tracks (especially the VR tracks) just seem like minimal effort was put in to them. They have very little originality, and on many you can complete a lap in less than 20 seconds (some in less than 15 seconds even).
- The levels are extremely forgettable
- The power ups are really uninspiring with just basic shoot forward, drop behind, or speed up. There are no interesting weapons that attack all other racers at once or no weapons that primarily help those lagging behind.

Overall I would say that while the visuals are really impressive, the game just feels so empty and bland. I wish I could enjoy it more.

Is it worth about 6 pounds? Absolutely. Is it worth more than that? Im not so sure. I have not had a chance to enjoy the multiplayer yet, so maybe that makes it that little bit more enjoyable.

Also, I must be pretty crap at the game because I cant figure out how to unlock other characters. :/

Great Game. Worth every penny. A lot of the tracks have a unique and distinctive feel to them. While the style is similar to the one you find in super mario kart, this game adds a lot of new features that make the tracks more interesting.

Super Indie Karts has over 40 tracks based on Indie games, over 25 characters from these Indie games. The drifting mechanics are great and there is no shortage of powerups. Also 4 player splitscreen.

If you like Super Tux Kart, Mario Kart, Sonic Racing or other games like those, This game is a solid choice, It has a bigger roster than all of those, Aside from that it also has a more likable roster. In Mario Kart most people pick Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, etc Nobody picks the fillers. This game has no fillers, All characters are playable characters from other Indie games. Like Lea from Crosscode, Or Lilac from Freedom Planet. I really love the cross indie game idea. And the roster is building up pretty nicely.

Aside from the incredible roster the game already has over 40 tracks Most Mario Kart games only have 16, 4 cups with 4 tracks each. The tracks in Super Indie Karts are also all based on levels from the indie games. There is a rhombus square level from Crosscode for example, It is nice to see a lot of familliar objects from these other games.

The description of the game here on the Steam Store page is not really accurate, Talking about obstacles popping in right in front of you etc. This is totally not the case. It is an extremely solid racing game, I also don't see why people get confused about which direction they need to go, Everything is pretty clear, There are arrows all over the place.

All characters are sprites, They are not 3D, But it has sprites for every angle, So it looks a bit 3D. I think it looks very cool, and it give me a SNES vibe The Super (16 bit) are also flat sprites on a 3D these tracks are pretty short but they are not bad.

There are also Ultra (64 bit) tracks in a low poly 3D style. These have hills and loops and are not completely flat like the Super tracks. There is also Advanced which is a bit of a mix of Super and Ultra. All tracks are very unique, they offer a very nice balance, Some tracks are easy, some are hard, some are just impossible, have a lot of holes, or you need to ink the track to see where you are going.

The powerups are pretty cool, it could use a bit more, But I think it is on par with the Mario Kart games. I would love to see more powerups, And maybe a special powerup that gives a character unique ability for the complete roster. Imagine Lea using Wave or Lilac using her comet ability. to power through enemies.

As great as the game is right now, It is still in Early Access, We can expect a bunch of additions to the roster and a lot more tracks, I hope we will see Tux as a playable character, Maybe Hatty from BBT, Maybe the guy from dead cells or Yooka Laylee, Some characters from Towerfall and Celeste, Or Maybe Robin from Iconoclasts. Who knows, You can suggest characters in the discussions, but who will be added will be a mystery untill they are added, I can imagine it can be a pain with the licencing etc.

There are several gamemodes, Time Trial, Grand Prix, Single Race, But also Multiplayer modes, Battle and Split Screen GP. The GP is pretty self explanitory, It is just a cup containing 4 races. The Battle mode is a bit different, Here you have the classic battle where you have 3 lives, There are also modes where you have to collect the most gems, or find a single mushroom over and over again.

The karts control pretty sweet, Drifting feels great, Turning is great, Aiming works good. The control scheme could be better. I have set it to the Sanic R setting, But I would love a more modern racing game layout. Maybe Brake/reverse on LT and hop/drift on LB. You can customize your controls, But it sees LB and LT as the same button L. So that kinda sucks, But I have no doubt this will get fixed later on.

The soundtrack is great, It borrows from the many indie games that are included in the game. So you might find some familiar tunes. The UI is also great, But there are a few things that are obviously missing. Online Multiplayer for example, Achievements, Trading Cards, Character stats, Unlockables. But it is still in EA, It receives a big update every month or 2, It is great to see the improvements with each update. I have no doubt this game will get out of EA.

Overall, I just love the game, I have to give it a 9 for now, But I am sure it will become a 10 before it leaves Early Access. It is an absolute must have.

Game is pretty damn fun! Get to pick your favorite indie game character and race with them on tracks from said indies games. The tracks are colorful with some easy to access yet sneakily hidden shortcuts if you're not paying attention... However the parts I do hope they change up is the breaks, drifting and some if not most of the tracks. Breaking around corners are none existent, drifting is pretty much useless since you can turn just as sharp as you drift, exiting a drift either straightens you out or you just keeping turning for a second or two. Tracks for example Runbow tracks are good ideas on paper but absolutely horrible in practice... Most tracks are hair pin turns through out the whole of them and seem way too small for the boost pick ups.

Conclusion: Needs work but it's no doubt full of potential and definitely worth a try!

A love letter to old-school mascot/kart racers, in particular, the first 3 games in the Mario Kart Series (Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart Super Circuit, and Mario Kart 64). The game is quite a bit tougher than those games and modern kart racers but still a lot of fun. The game has come a long way since launching into early access and still has much left to show. I'm looking forward to seeing what the finished product looks like.

If this review could be a "maybe" that is what it would be. I agree so much with what Vidd said in his review from 2018. A year later, and it seems that there might have been a small improvement to level design.

As Vidd mentioned, the levels are full of chaos instead of clever design. There are a ton of warps, gems, items instead of carefully placed items in strategic locations on each map. It was over flashy and stimulating which takes away from trying to control the kart and race.

The "advanced" courses were GOOD! (exclulding item placements) Unfortunately, there's still only 4 of those tracks, where the "super" and "ultra" courses were full of punishing 90-degree turns, lots of drop off edges, and generally over-difficult courses. They are not fun, and kart racing games are not ones that should be designed to "git gud" before you have fun. Kart racers are supposed to be easy to pick-up and play, but difficult to master due to shortcuts or proper drifting.

Super Mario Kart is one of the worst in its series, due to the 16 bit limitation, and the Super tracks are just as annoying to play as those original tracks were. There's a strong reason why Nintendo hasn't remade tracks in that style in later Mario Kart games.

As Vidd stated though, there's a lot that can turn this game around; particularly by reducing item spam, and being more strategic about placements. Make more levels like the "advanced" tracks, and rework the other ones. There's so much framework here that should be improved before the full release, but it's saddening to play in the current state.

TopDeck
TopDeck

It's hard to say whether or not I actually recommend this game. On the one hand, it's got a lot of potential! It could EVENTUALLY be something really cool! Right now it's very solid feeling, even if the driving isn't quite as tight as I'd personally like.

That said, right now the biggest pain point is the lack of online play. Don't know how you can launch a Kart Racer in this day and age with no online play whatsoever outside of Steam's new shareplay thing.

I feel like this game should have launched with the more recent 3D N64-inspired tracks, because those are gorgeous. The 2D NES-inspired tracks don't feel nearly as good.

If you're able to play locally with friends, this is a solid to great kart racer, and I'd recommend it. I refunded the game, but if online play is added later I'd happily re-purchase this.

You get what you pay for. Good Mario Kart ripoff. Some cups are INSANELY difficult and you can't get more than 6th place altogether. Other cups are very fun. Good visual effects. Made me yell at the scream a lot (but in a good way?)

I agree with the previous reviews that there is way too much inertia in the controls of this game. It needs to be fun the first time you pick it up to play. It is just really difficult to even go around the track and I feel like its not that I am bad, it is that the controls are poorly designed. On mario kart or crash bandicoot or other racing games you can just just pick up the controllers and have fun going around the track. Not so for me in this game at all. It was hard, not fun, even on the "easy" 50cc mode...

Sagata

Save your money.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart, a free game made on the doom engine, does everything this game does a lot better plus is completely moddable. I discovered SRB2K much later after purchasing this game. That game already has more support and an active online community that is super helpful. 16 player online, with both racing / battlemodes as well as 4 player split screen that you can take online as well.

For as long as this has been in development for, I dont really care about the roster and lack luster courses. I do however, spend a lot of time with SRB2K.

I'd honestly get a refund if I could.

A fun Mario Kart like game but they implemented their own spin on it a little. if you want Mario Kart on PC and support indie games, this is the game for you. I'm sure this was intentional but because of this game I'm gonna consider checking these games out.

just a suggestion but it wouldn't hurt to implement either mod support or a way for players to have custom races and modes.

I don think this is a bad game but as a kart racer it is just doesnt do it for me. However once it releases I will definitely give it another go.

Pros
+ art style is...cute
+ lots of speed
+ n64 style tracks
Cons
- too much speed not enough control
- anything above 100cc is too hard
at least for me
- karts dont handle well. Also you
can turn so tightly that you can
actually do a 180 and go in the
wrong direction . This doesnt feel
right at all
- weapons are boring and not well
suited to the tracks especially the
16bit tracks.
- no indication of individual racer
stats, if any
- snes style tracks are short and not
Fun

- tracks are cluttered.

Its a pretty neat Karting game like Mario kart maybe even better. But, I do wonder what other interesting stuff the Dev has in mind for it. I did a couple small streams of this on twitch and I absolutely had a great time with this title. I'm giving this a thumbs up for being excellent.

I normally find racing games hard to get into. Overall I'm not a huge fan of the genre. However, I really enjoy games like Mario Kart and Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed because they take the genre and evolve it. While I don't think it is quite on the same level, Super Indie Karts does the same.

Playing With Nostalgia

As you may have noticed from screenshots, this game has a unique art style. It uses a combination of 16 bit and 64 bit for its environments. The terrain is 3D, while most of the assets such as trees, rocks, and other obstacles are 2D. The characters are 2D as well, but are designed to look 3D with the use of multiple sprites.

The varied design is what makes these visuals so damn good to look at. It's designed to look like a retro game, and it achieves that task brilliantly. The game uses pretty much every colour on the palette, and it uses them to great effect. They make the retro feeling that the game is trying to provide feel more and more convincing as you play it.

The tracks themselves, as well as the characters, are from a wide variety of indie games such as Teslagrad, Duck Game, ToeJam & Earl, Burrito Bison and many more. As far as I can tell, each game featured has its own character and race track. While some of the tracks are more detailed than others, they are all really well made and look like they belong in the game they are representing.

As for the layout, I didn't have any trouble navigating through the race tracks. Each track has a clear map, with dozens of shortcuts being present as an optional route. The game contains a minimap and the tracks have dozens of arrows pointing where you need to go, making it pretty hard to lose track of where you're going. That being said, that doesn't mean the structure is perfect. Some races rely too much on 90 degree turns, and while it isn't too bad on most races, there are some where there is simply not enough warning to prepare yourself for them.

Visuals Aren't Everything

A problem that many racing games end up having is poorly designed mechanics that turn the experience into a drag. For the most part, Super Indie Karts manages to avoid this problem. The driving's not perfect, but it's good. It does not hinder the experience in any way. It's easy to get into, and the fast paced nature of the gameplay should make this game appealing to almost everyone.

It's not the smoothest experience I've had. What caught me off guard was how challenging this game was. There are times where you have to be careful how fast you drive and how early you drift, giving the gameplay an inconsistent rhythm. For the most part, this isn't a bad thing, but like I mentioned before, when there are an abundance of 90 degree turns, it can be offputting. The collision isn't the best either. I found myself stuck driving into walls more than once.

The AI is designed really well, and can easily catch up with you if you make a mistake. There are a variety of power ups that can be picked up across the map which can be used to gain an advantage on the race. These power ups make races much more unpredictable, and can mean the difference between winning or losing. You can also collect gems which are similar to Mario Kart's coins, however these contribute to a side objective which, if completed, will increase the rank you get at the end of the grand prix.

The game contains over 40 unique race tracks and around 25 different characters, ranging from ToeJam, The Knight, a dinosaur, and a literal fish tank. While there's a lot of choice here, there isn't a great deal of variety in terms of characters. Each character drives the same and has the same stats.

There also isn't much in the way of customisation either. Some characters can have more than one appearance, but each character drives the same kart. It's a missed opportunity that doesn't necessarily harm the game, but does decrease its play time value.

Another thing that's worth mentioning is the sound design. The environments aren't the only thing that contribute to the retro feeling of the game, the sounds do a good job to enforce it as well. The sound effects are rather humorous, but they don't feel out of place. The soundtrack is catchy and fits with the style of the game.

My Final Thoughts

As you undoubtedly noticed, the game is still in early access, and has been for quite some time now. As it stands, the game is still missing some content and the progress is slow. There isn't any online multiplayer, unless you use remote play. There isn't a "campaign", and there isn't huge replay value.

However, I will say this; do not let this put you off. Despite its shortcomings, this is a great racing game. If you like racing games, especially ones like Mario Kart, you'll have a blast with this. If you and a group of friends are looking for a nice game to compete against each other with, this is a good one to pick. If you're a retro game enthusiast, the visuals and the atmosphere alone will captivate you.

It's a bit on the pricey side so I would wait for a sale, but overall I've had a great time on this game, and I playing it more after this review. Looking forward to seeing more content.

Pros:

-Brilliant art style
-Beautiful environments
-Wide variety of characters & tracks
-Good power ups
-Great sound design

Cons:

-Wonky Collision
-Too many sharp turns
-Lack of variety & customisation

Final Rating:

8/10

I thought I would do a recommendation even though I haven't played in a while and very little at that. This game is already a great reimagining of the SNES/GBA era Kart racer but with modern finesse and there's a lot to love. Progress is going along at a steady if slow pace, but I'm very much looking forward to the full release. 12euros isn't asking much for something with the high quality of the classics

Very fun mario kart clone, but a little bit more difficult. The VR maps so far are the most fun in my opinion.
Also, fuck disappearing platforms on Runbow map

i liked it. Played a lot of these style games(wacky wheels etc) growing up. Really nails n64 mario kart in terms of gameplay. i really like the art. i suspect alot of the critism re-finish is due to people not really remembering what the 90's were like. boot up an emulated mario 64 for a comparision. It is highly finished comparitively. As a party multiplayer game it is good fun. It does have that classic 90's barrier to entry...Mastering the powerslide.

I had this sitting at my wishlist for several years.
My hope was, that there will be some kind of multiplayer implemented, as those games are only really fun with people driving with you.
Whether you know them or not, doesnt matter.
Any AI comes to its limits in terms of difficulty and no AI can mimik human failure or cruelty.

I grabbed this relatively cheap in a sale now. And while i see its appeal there are three things that hold it back to becoming the truly best PC Mario Kart contestor.
1.) Customizable controls and some sort of explanation on several things in the game related (like what items actually do and what buttons do).

2.) Multiplayer beyond splitscreen. I get that online might never happen as its hard to realize and thats probably ok. But at least LAN so people can set up proper games without gigantic lag.

3.) One of the most important: Character
The thing is this. Mario Kart is such a lovely game because it sprawls with character left and right. You have the racers shout things, in joy or "pain", they do emotes, they do stuff whenever something happens, someone passes by, someone gets hit or whatever.
Theres also a lot of lovely ambient sound when things happen.
Even just a minor funny sound when passing through the finish line in the final lap and a nice finishing music track playing increases the appeal drastically.
And thats whats missing here. There are cool characters, they look cool, but they are soulless. They appear like their original counterparts, but lack their identity.
Nintendos Games arent so freaking successful because the graphics are nice or the games themselves necessarily deep and strategic.
Its because every minor character gets an incredible amount of work to present him/her/itself as a meaningful addition. Even originally sidecharacters become a personality in those Nintendo Games. And in crossover games, they catch the personality and character and carry it over into a Nintendo World (see Smash Bros).

This game is truly recommendably. It looks good, it plays fine, the tracks are amazing and the content is there.
But while it offers a solid roster of racers from other games, none of them have any personality. And thus every race i played was just me trying to drive good.
But we all know, playing a Kart Racer is also about having your arch enemy and trying to throw stuff into that one racers way.
Sadly, without the personality all other racers feel like empty shells. Absolutely replacable.

If the developer fixes those three things. Its a perfect Mario Kart Alternative on PC.
Even without those three things fixed, it is an Ok Kart Racer. But not much more.

I recommend it, if you seek for a Mario Kart inspired game and love the artstyle.
If you already have an alternative you like, or Mario Kart, then i dont see a reason yet to buy this game.

Let me start by saying I've played basically every kart racing game since the original Mario Kart on SNES. This game will test your patience, the AI on the easiest level is pretty difficult due to rubber banding, I was in first throughout most of the races till the very end where the 2nd place AI slingshots past me even though I'm hitting boost pads and staying on course, add that into levels that are over complicated and have unnecessary hazards and obstacles (ie Runbow), sometimes less is more and unfortunately that's not the case with this game...

This game is actually pretty good. Its basically just Mariokart but on the steam store.

Seeing that this is basically Mario Kart for Indie Games, this game is a steal at both sale and launch price. I love the detail in the game-specific race tracks, among those Crosscode, Duck Game, and Guacamelee, which is what I've barely seen in other Mario Kart 'clones.'

I'm going to be fair though and list some things I didn't like that much (but might still be changed since it's in Early Access):
- Some of the harder tracks are SUPER hard
- I didn't like the 'VR Trax' at all, compared to the other tracks
- Could use more 'popular' Indie characters, such as the Shovel Knight, Celeste, Yooka-Laylee (although the roster is pretty good already)

Great game, great kart racer, great characters, great music. The only issue I have is that i wish the game was a little more accessible. The learning curve is quite steep and the AI on even 50cc take every shortcut on the map which make it very hard for a friend to just jump on and feel like he is actually able to do anything. the next few things are not issues just somethings i would like to have in the game. I would like more unique karts, most of the characters have the default one. I would also like to have something to unlock with each tournament win. The game is amazing and deffo worth the buy.

Very nice MK-Clone, but not much more than that.
It's a bit lacking in new mechanics and the rubber-banding can get annoying, but it's still a solid game.
Definetly reccomend it to fans of the source material.

Btw, if your PC is running unusually hot while playing this game, I reccommend limiting the max FPS in the game's settings.

Invisible Man
Invisible Man

This hellish game is what happens when you prioritize quirky soy "character" and rng "fun" factor, over fundamentals, and a few well thought out tracks.

All in all, the game has potential, as the drifting and handling of the karts feels nice, but the gameplay is ruined by the awful tracks.

Literally more than half of the tracks turn this kart racing game into a platforming bullet hell game, and even the better half of the tracks still have some awful design choices.

For one, most of the tracks have way too wide lanes.
Which are then filled with a bunch of moving obstacles and other gimmicks.
As if that wasn't enough, there's a bunch of jumping through gaps, lava, disappearing floors, and a thousand other things that break your flow and drifting lines, and turn this into rng chaos.

Some of the "better" tracks would be:
Indoor Circuit, Market Street 2064, Ultra Stadium, Canabalt, Whispering Garden, Vector Valley, Ducktona, Neo-SF, Seaweed, Duck Race, Carpark, Tesla 64

But then you have as many and then some of the most awfully designed tracks anyone could possibly come up with.
I'm talking about Runbow tracks, where parts of the floor literally disappear and you fall through the map (sometimes you'll land from a jump into disappearing lanes.)
Or tracks that are full of lava or gaps, more platforming than driving, and more moving obstacles and enemies than a bullet hell game.
Oh, and who's the dipshit who thought the INK TRAIL track was a good idea?! FUCK YOU

I know what you're thinking. "But that's still a bunch of great tracks to enjoy, just ignore the bad ones."
See, that could work, if it wasn't for the fact that it renders Grand Prix, arguably the "main" mode of this game, unplayable. As you race predetermined batches of 4 tracks, and half of the tracks will always be unplayable DOGSHIT.

Worth mentioning are the Beta Cup VR Trax, a total 16 of them. I believe these are the original tracks of the game, or at least are not themed after one of the games SIK has collaborated with.
These actually play great, albeit a little too bland and uninspired. But still fun given how good and responsive the handling feels.
One of the issues however is that they're all too short. I'm talking about 20 second donut laps short.
Which brings me to my next point:
They'd work great for Time Attack, if it wasn't for the fact that Time Attack resets once you complete 3 or 5 laps (depending on the track), so approximately every minute or so. Which completely interrupts and ruins the flow and getting in the zone.

Another issue is that, while the handling feels great overall, the karts will kind of clip into the walls if you accidentally either oversteer into a corner, or grind the outer rail.
Both should be punishable with a speed penalty, but it's pretty annoying when you nearly get stuck at times.

Other than that, the sprites and tracks look nice.

The soundtrack is hit and miss, half of it is good, the rest is awful, depending on the featured game each track is based on (the original soundtrack from the featured games is used, not remixes made by/for SIK, which is great in the case of Freedom Planet or Duck Game, and not so great for some other featured titles)
The original soundtrack for VR Trax is nothing special, but enjoyable. Synthwave, can't go wrong with that.

tl;dr An otherwise good game, ruined by awful track designs.

leaving this review while the game is still in early access at the end of 2021 with more updates planned for the future on the way. i will update again when the game leaves early access. if you are a kart racing fan you should really enjoy this . if you are a fan of one of the games of the included characters i suggest giving it a try its a lot of fun on the casual level.

only a little bit into this but i ran all the tracks and time trials.
the time trials don't have goals to reach? they were fun either way recording my lap times but maybe an achievement will come for them in the future or medals .

for the content this game has now in early access still it's really good and has massive potential.
awesome roster so far with some of my favorite inclusions being from duck game , mutant mudds and toe jam and earl. i'm looking forward to seeing who else is included. i really like the levels for each character and their game and the included music from their games.

2d on 3d looks really cool. over all aesthetic of the game is my favorite for a kart racer.

the feel of the cart racing is super smooth with really fun drifting and maneuvering with jumps . items and all that are great. battle mode is tons of fun. takes a bit to get used to some of the tracks especially the ones with heavy obstacles in them but this is really fun and doesn't interrupt the flow of the race just increases the focus and reaction time for me. 200cc is intense. this is where is starts to feel alot different from all other kart racers but the experience is unique and enjoyable challenge.
some parts of the game are a bit to bright. the battle mode arena levels in particular could use some variation and maybe less intensity on the color brightness but thats a personal preference.

it looks like there are a lot more levels and characters still in the works, with online mode potentially coming in the distant future. imo this game finished and with online mode would be my favorite kart racer on steam in its current state though its definitely worth grabbing on sale if you like kart racers and support this cool idea of a game:) you have to like single player content though and have people to play local.

the updates come out way to slow i mean the pandemic effected everyone but still the game is far to light features wise for how long its been since the game was available. and this is why i wold not recommend this game unless they add online tomorrow. EDIT: i get where you're coming from, but you don't have to leave a passive aggressive "I've been working on this project for 10 years this year, so it's fair to say it's taken a little longer than I had hoped too! But even after a decade of my life, I've never given up hope of finishing it all up to a standard I could be proud of." reply, to someone who enjoyed your game this sounds like a one person operation given the long delay for personal reasons, now i don't know the personal situation of you but i think you might want to hire a team of workers to help so you can speed the game along, i don't even know if this is the current workplace of One Legged Seagull, i didn't even mean to try to come off as a review ransom, i'm just bummed that when me and friends never got to play together after all this time. I see the game's potential i'm just saddened that it has not reached it yet. and for those curious this is the full dev reply in case the delete it.
OneLeggedSeagull [developer] Posted: Feb 8 @ 1:40am
Well now, I wouldn't normally respond to review ransoms, but I'm feeling a little loose after unusually having a 2nd cup of coffee for the day..

I've been working on this project for 10 years this year, so it's fair to say it's taken a little longer than I had hoped too! But even after a decade of my life, I've never given up hope of finishing it all up to a standard I could be proud of.

Along the way many new elements have been added to the game (way beyond the original scope of the budget), and refined over time, to develop the project into a better and better experience (that's why it's still in Early Access). It might be slow n steady, but the game gets better with every update, and that grand finish line just keeps getting closer and closer.

Keep on kartin' on!

Do you like Mario Kart? Do you play a lot of indie games? If the answer to either of those is "yes" you need Super Indie Karts.

You have a selection of 2D and 3D tracks from the represented games to choose from, organised into cups containing four courses each. The expected Grand Prix, Single Race Time Trial modes are all accounted for with engine classes of 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, 200cc and a mirror mode for each available.

Much like the more recent Mario Kart games, your performance in Grand Prix mode will be ranked. Each race will have three objectives: collecting hidden golden mushrooms, collecting a set number of jewels (they're everywhere) and winning the race. Each objective completed will net you a star, and your total stars at the end of the cup will determine your rank. The number of golden mushrooms and jewels needed increase with the engine class too, so you're not playing the same tracks the same way eight times over.

Controls wise, you're be playing with the drift system Mario Kart Wii onwards uses, with longer drifts providing longer turbos. Items will be familiar to Mario Kart fans too.

As of January 2022 a mission mode akin to that of Mario Kart DS has been added. Each mission is ranked, so there's plenty of challenge if you care about more than just clearing the missions!

All of that in an Early Access title with more characters, courses and cups to come. Again, if you like Mario Kart or play a lot of indie games you need Super Indie Karts.

I'm not sure why I never left a review before, but here goes (TL;DR at bottom):

I picked this up while it was on sale and I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with it thus far.

It pays homage to the classic kart racers from the SNES era and offers N64-esque 3D visuals as well.
It's very bright and lively, with the sheer amount of variety in the Indie titles it features really shining through.
I don't know any of the characters except ToeJam & Earl, and Burrito Bison.
But nevertheless, I appreciate them all.

The visuals itself can be a bit jarring at first if you haven't played a pixelated game in a while, but as you adjust you might also find how great this game looks when you're not focused on just the pixelated nostalgia.
Everything is really vibrant when it needs to be, and there's many maps that are really unique and entertaining to race through.
Characters stick out in quirky ways that represent their origin, and are all very different from one another.
And probably the best part about it, is the optional settings for SNES like flat pixels or N64 like 3D that you can switch between at your own discretion. You can even put a curved monitor with scanlines too!
Sometimes i'd just replay a race just because it looked and felt nice to play.
Especially when you start getting better and everything starts going by faster! It's really intense fun with others. Speaking of which:

The controls are very tight and responsive, and extremely satisfying to play at a higher skill level.
So much so, that when I got absolutely pissed about playing Runbow Road for the first time while learning what to do, I eventually discovered many smaller details; All the nuances and tricks left me replaying that single track for days on end to get the WR!
You can map the controls to a lot of different preset controller types, or map your own custom controls just how you want it. Typically i'd recommend a gamepad, but keyboard works just as well and is complimented by the response time on inputs.
You'd be surprised how many games just can't get that simple thing right...

While it's true it is in early access, this game is still great fun, especially with all of the added updates.
You've got dozens of tracks that can be played normally or in mirror, and different game modes that can be played alone or with others like grand prix, various battle modes, or (my personal favorite) time trials; For however you like to play.
There's Devs that give feedback and listen, and take their time crafting what will ultimately be a future classic.
Even if it may not end up being the most profitable or popular, it's definitely a good game with a great build quality that will only age like a fine wine.
While we do have other options like Sonic Robo Blast Kart 2 and Emulated classics, this one still has its merits and is definitely worth looking into and giving a try.

Despite the current playtime displayed, my offline data didn't sync all the time but I have over 200 hours into this game and I still go back to play it again every so often.
I can't wait for the day it fully releases with online multiplayer and all of the new content, it'll be great.

TL;DR: It's a very satisfying kart racer that pays homage to classic SNES and N64 kart racing titles.
Featuring many indie characters and their locales, it also has a lot of unique environmental hazards and tracks that many other games don't have, or haven't done as well.
It's extremely responsive and has very great Speedrunning potential, and is really fun at higher skill levels!

8/10 Look forward to the full release, and catch it on sale if you can while it's still Early Access!

An absolute MUST play if you like Mario Kart, indie games, or both. And with such a great roster of characters and tracks you can see why! Soundtrack is also filled to the brim with bangers all across the board! The speed feels like a type of mix between 150 and 200cc in MK8, so pretty much 175cc in a way, so if you play MK you shouldn't have a hard time with this. Theres just so much love put into everything here that it feels like a genuine crossover, not just a bunch of characters, but tracks, skins (for some), and a visual style thats super charming and compliments the characters very well! The game additionally has collectibles and other goals to complete in the GP mode which makes it even better in terms of replayability. I have not even gotten to the gameplay, which feels extremely fluid and fast-paced, and as I mentioned before it's not THAT much faster than Mario Kart but it still has it's own controls and unique quirks to stand out. Also it is recommended you limit the max FPS of the game in settings when you launch it if your PC starts blowing air while playing. But other than that, the game is a blast and still gets updated to this day, so give it a shot already!

Decently fun game and it's cheap. BUT...

- Incredibly slow development. As you can see the original early access launch was in 2015 and it still hasn't released as of this review (2022)

- Only has splitscreen PvP. If the developer is simply worried about server costs, let players host their own lobbies. This game would be far more successful if people had a way to race their friends online.

- Drifting. For a game that so clearly pulls its influence from Mario Kart, I don't quite understand why drifting feels so bad.

- AI Drivers. They seem to either be really stupid and passive or far too overboard, difficulty settings aside.

- Sometimes it's hard to tell what is going on with the tracks. Part of that is the nature of the graphics and the art style, but some visual clarification would help instead of just trial and error until you figure out everything you shouldn't run into.

This is a really good kart racing game that I found to be a lot better than the other kart games out there. However, I was having difficulty with my controller when first playing this. I couldn't move for a little while, and then all of a sudden I would start accelerating then my kart would just stop. It turns out there is an auto-accelerate feature that's turned on by default. If you're having problems getting your controller to work go into Settings, then controller, then turn off auto-accelerate. After I did that the game worked fine for me.

The game is great, therefore I would still recommand but motion sickness does prevent me to enjoy it to the fullest.
I've never had that in a kart racing game, most of the time I have that in some FPS games but racing ? Nah, not even in Mario Kart with gravity stuff.
And I think it all comes down to how the camera moves while you slide. I would have liked an option to stick the character to the middle of the screen, instead it slowly drifts away, maybe in an attempt to make some sensation but it doesn't work on me, it just makes me sick.

Also, I feel like if you're sensitive to epileptic stuff, maybe you should avoid that. Not only I had some motion sickness playing the game, but there's a shit ton of rainbow stuff around, especially where you're first on the last lap. The « 1st » thing becomes so huge and it shines in rainbow, lots of stuff is just shining and glowing with all colors and sometimes it even does distract me from enjoying the track and I get confused about where I have to go

The game is still good, I feel like it may be too slippy but that may be because of the camera moving, but I would genuinely love to have some « anti epilepsy » stuff, or some way to tone down the multiple rainbows effects, and anti motion sickness stuff with way less camera movements, maybe some ways to tone down the UI and have something a bit more subtle, just a tiny bit because I get the idea behind that, obviously it's a choice, but I feel like the developper really went too far.

An excellent crossover racer with precise controls and gorgeous graphics. It feels like if you crossed the simplicity and graphics of the OG Super Mario Kart with the insane speeds, boosts, and level design form Team Sonic Racing.
