So, I just beat this game last night and honestly, this might just be my favourite Team Grybanser Fox game yet (granted, I still have yet to play through Zenodeath). Another thing that I would like to point out is that there is a fairly interesting story behind the development of this game. For more information on that, watch Shmup Junkie's Super XYX review.

This game is solid but it doesn't have too many tricks. The first clear is the hardest because after unlocking the last ship the game becomes extremely easy.
That being said I had fun during everyone of the 4 hours I've been playing. I think it's a good game for someone just starting with the genre.

Super XYX is a simpler, but not easier, more classic vertical shoot 'em up. It's a neon color explosion of no frills, yet very solid game play of an STG.

Super XYX gives the player the choice of two pilots/ships to start. The spread shot with Truxton style skull bomb and forward shot with a rocket bombardment. Both feeling well balanced to each other as the spread shot handles popcorn enemies well, but has to point-blank more to take down larger enemies. While the forward shot wrecks everything its path quickly but has less screen coverage with its attack.

In addition, each ship gets options/attachments to boot their firepower in addition to the usual shmup power ups. These options yield even more firepower and can be configured depending on the player. Either for wider screen coverage or more forward focus fire.

The gameplay of Super XYX is good. The ships handle well, if a little fast for my tastes; but certainly there's faster playing shmups out there. I just prefer a slight slower pace, as my reflexes aren't want they used to be. The enemy bullet patterns are pretty varied and much of them are standard STG fair but excellently executed. I found it more about either having the correct dodge/route plan than straight memorization of many 20th century shmups.

However, I did find that the game has a slight Gradius Syndrome. In that it becomes noticeable tougher if you get hit and have to play a new de-powered ship. It's not aggravating, but it can take a long while to get back all the power ups you had. And using a continue doesn't start from a checkpoint. It starts the player at the beginning of the stage. Further giving the impression that Super XYX wants 1CC to finish.

The biggest issue I found was that with all the bright colors and stage layers like clouds, it's incredibly easy to lose track of enemy bullets. Funny enough, it is the single shots that seemed to hit me the more, or more specifically, I'd fly into. There can be lot going on making it real easy to not notice a stray, slowing moving enemy projectile partly hidden the color palette and partly from your own massive firepower.

Super XYX doesn't really do anything new for the shoot 'em up genre. However, it is a very solid game that is easy to figure out the basics but surprisingly challenging yet fair in its game play. As a player that prefers the simple, gimmickless shoot 'em up, Super XYX is right up my alley.

One of my most played games this year. I absolutely adore the graphical style of this game and the music is great too. But the gameplay is where this game excels. All your shots have real weight and impact to them. There is overall little downtime during each stage. The stages have a good difficulty curve to them , and the first stage is also interesting enough to replay. Enemy bullet patterns are varied and well done. Bosses look cool, though most can be cheezed. Would have been nice if they all had some pattern to force you out of the safe zones. Thankfully this is not the case for the TLB. There are also quite some unlockables, and no less then 6 ships, that each have quite a different feel to them. But for me the real star of this game is SUPER Arcade Mode, which is just so exhilarating to play. Its like the base game turned up to 11. Shame there is no training mode though.
Just to be clear here, this is not a bullet hell game. It feels much closer to games such as those made by Toaplan and Hudson Soft in the 80's and 90's. Anyway, just go and play this game, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent mid-'90s-style shmup that feels like a lost late Toaplan/early Cave title. Beautiful Saturn-tier pixel art, tight gameplay, splendid presentation, great soundtrack and ever-more impressive bosses.

DemonSlayer613
DemonSlayer613

Cool game. The presentation is awesome as is the gameplay. By that I mean the music and graphics kick butt. Gameplay is what I expect, solid as well. What I don't like though is bombs don't restock after death and continuing doesn't immediately leave off to where you died. Could've at least had immediate continuation or a checkpoint for continues. I stick with normal arcade mode, not GZR arcade mode because I hate checkpoints upon death in shmups (I hate starting the level over upon death even more) as it is padding and disrupts the flow for me. That's a minor complaint though. I prefer vertical STGs over horizontal ones mainly because objects, walls or ceilings won't kill you unlike in horizontal shooters, that's just me though. Would I recommend it? Heck yeah.

Only put an hour on this game so far and totally in love with it. Has that Truxton and Grindstormer feel. Great Arcade style feel and visuals and is fast paced classic shoot'em up. Can get tough as nails but also great for a new player getting into shmups. A+ in my book and would love to see more from this developer.

Game doesn't start. There are workarounds and with tinkering you should be able to get it working. But the dev is aware, and they don't seem interested in actually fixing the issue, so I can't really recommend this.

This is a great Toaplan like shmup. Reminds me of V-V some with its big chunky enemies and bullet patterns. Lots of unlockables and killer soundtrack. It's not too, too difficult on normal so it's a good one for newer to moderate shmuppers.

Shimon11
Shimon11

This is one of those 90's style shmups that just throws basic lightning-fast bullet patterns at you. None of those games were any fun, and neither is this. There's also no practice mode, which is worth a negative review all by itself.

Phalange
Phalange

Awesome SHMUP, another one that is super cheap on discount. The gameplay is fast but you have a brake for your ship which is very useful for dodging. There are 4 ships to unlock to keep you motivated but no achievements. The controls feel great. Yes it is hard but it is only a matter of practice. 8/10

I have played shooters for years now and really gravitate towards the old school games from the 90's, especially Toaplan. This game takes the aesthetics and music i enjoy and gives the game great playability with good scoring mechanics for those high score fans. The game is fast and challenging but awards repeated play throughs. I managed to improve quite quickly and this game definately has that just one more go type feeling. The more i play this game the better it gets and for me its up there with the likes of Blue Revolver and Zero Ranger.

A quick note: to change difficulty, screen rotation, borders etc go into the Set Keys option and then More options at the bottom of the menu.

As a casual shump fan/Toaplan lover, this is the best game Grybanser Fox has done yet. Incredible pixel art, really cool music (altho not as catchy as Dogyuun or Jet Buster). Big scores for killing everything without dying. Fun+Cool

[Contains minor spoilers]

After almost a decade in development hell (not counting Neo XYX, that feels like it's own thing, tbh), Super XYX (formerly XYX) has finally been completed and it has definitely been worth the wait.

Pros:
*Amazing graphics, harkening back to the old days of Toaplan games (Truxton II, especially).
*An easy to understand scoring system, that can be hard to master in order to get those big points (because of dying).
*Great soundtrack to back the action, no song feels out of place and fits in perfectly (mad props for the bonus stage song's interpretation of 80s Toaplan sound hardware).
*The stages are moderately long, so you don't get overwhelmed (bonus stage is a different beast entirely).
*The bosses are challenging, but they mostly feel fair.
*The unlockables, 'nuff said.

Cons:
*Sometimes, it's a bit hard to notice the enemy attacks in all the action, best example being the fire attack for the bonus stage end boss.
*It feels a bit weird seeing "CLEAR!" next to my score, when I actually used continues to clear both normally and the TLB clear. It should show you where your high score actually ended or something along those lines, like in Alltynex Second.

Bugs:
*I somehow unlocked the blue ship, but I don't know how, I'll need some info on this.
*When playing with yellow ship, during the final stage, black boxes appeared on the sides and in the upper center of the screen. Not sure, but the big face ships might've caused this.
*The border art for the gray ship is too far from the edge to hide the cut hand.

Aside from these, this is a very good game, it's definitely worth the asking price.
If you need your Toaplan fix as you wait for the M2 releases, get this game NOW!

Do you like bullet hell? Of course you do, that's just the sort of hell to dip in and dip out and have fun. Well, Super XYX is like taking an old school vertical shooter and then soaking it in bullet hell. Great low res look, great music. Nothing to dislike here I'd say!

Rail/ slave

This is a spiritual reboot to one of the prettiest games on the Neo geo, this time that same artist has been given complete creative control and technical support from a solid, tight publisher/team.

I love all the little animations and transitions, bullet types and sprite effects on the wormy things later on, its some "next gen" shit, circa 1995/sega saturn era.

Of all toaplan games this reminds me of Batsugun most, that proto bullethell with the beautifully rendered, bombastic bosses

The difficulty feels finely tuned (more so than in fire arrow imo) and the game is addicting and vastly replayable as a result with a creative roster, all with their own ending graphics (35 + people will appreciate that as a reward )

Exciting dev to follow, now developing one of a best looking things on the Sega megadrive. with ZPF

Really great homage to nineties shmups - specifically the Toaplan games. In other words, it is intense, it is tough and it is hectic - but it is NOT a bullet-hell.

Super XYX manages to absolutely nail the feeling of those classics and hits all the right arcade notes without feeling simply derivative. Played some of this developer's other games, but this is the best of the lot so far.

This shmup is awesome! The graphics, sound effects (those explosions!) and music are all great and make me think of a crazy, heightened sega genesis game. I'm not very good at shmups yet but I'm getting better and this game in particular has helped me out a lot.

Nowadays you see a lot of people throwing the word "arcade" around whenever they mean anything that's not realistic: "arcade shooter" this, "arcade racer" that - but honestly? That doesn't really fit most of the time, because most of said "arcade games" are neither hard enough to extort people of their quarters nor graphically obnoxious enough to really attract anyone if they were actually set up in an arcade. Super XYX though? Yeah, it's "arcade" alright - but it's also actually fair, which makes it all the better.

At a glance, Super XYX's most striking aspect are its visuals. You know Ryzorg, the director/artist? Yeah, he previously did art for Gunlord, both Fire Arrow games and Neo XYX, the fairly harder Neo Geo version (out now, developed by NG.Dev. This one is a remake of that). It looks *excellent*, but also garish as hell in all the ways that'd make people go "oh hey, that's a good looking game, let's check the cabinet out". The YM2151 soundtrack cooked up by Carina also goes suitably hard, especially during the True Last Boss.

Unlike a real arcade game though, Super XYX is never unfair and actually rather forgiving. Difficulty can be customized, and your ship of choice (6 of'em, 4 unlockable) will also determine how you manage your positioning based on your firing pattern. Otherwise though, i've never encountered an enemy pattern that made me check out on sight - and it's happened a bunch of times in other games, like Zenodyne R. So, while clearing arcade mode won't be much of a problem, doing so with the highest stack of points available may take some work - and i'm fairly sure that's the real challenge of this game.

You see, Super XYX is *extremely* focused on scoring, which means getting medals, combo bonuses for quick kills, a bonus for every spare life you have at the end of a stage and a "No Miss" bonus. If you're new to STGs, that means "no death", and it'll keep stacking up the more stages (6 total) you can go through without dying - which means that ideally, the highest scoring run of Super XYX is a perfect one. That's true for every STG, but i feel like XYX might be the second i've seen where it's actually achievable without being a god. Also, a higher score also grants you more lives and bombs, which are resupplied inbetween stages - so that's your actual incentive to do it other than personal satisfaction. Yeah, the game may not be too hard, but having more bombs has never hurt anyone - especially here, where you're actually kind of incentivized to use'em to not break your no death run.

So yeah, Super XYX is a really fun STG that i'd 100% consider "entry point" material, much like Astebreed, Jet Lancer and Risk System - except unlike those, there's no real "twist" that'd make purists frown a little: it's just good old vertical shooting action the way Momma Toaplan used to make. A steal for this asking price, will double-dip on Itch.io ASAP.

After spending the better part of last week palying this game, unlocking everything three times, recording and experimenting strategies for all the bosses and game modes I can safely say this is my favorite game released this year for sure. If you're reading this review right now then that must mean that you're likely a fan of shmups/shoot 'em up/STG games.

Team Grybanzer Fox is recognized for making games in the same vein as Toaplan, which is basically the most influential company for shmups as we know them right now. Don't know about Toaplan? Well let's have some short storytime. Toaplan was a company that basically defined what we now know as modern shmups. They were recognized as some of the best developers in their day and when the company fell down the remnants of Toaplan formed a few companies you mgiht have heard of such as CAVE (Mushihimesama, Dodonpachi, ESP RaDe, Ketsui), Raizing (Battle Garegga, Battle Bakraid, Armed Police Batrider), Takumi (Giga Wing, Mars Matrix) and Gazelle (Air Gallet). Ok, you might be asking yourself why am I talking about Toaplan and not Grybanzer Fox? Well, TGF are a team whose philosophy lies in trying to bring back the things we loved about shmups from the past before every shmup became either a loli game or a touhou fangame. TGF games are mostly based on Toaplan style of games and this game is no exception. This game would probably compare most closely to Batsugun or V-V, but it has an essence of its own.

This game combines the best from the Toaplan era with some of the best features of games from more modern companies such as CAVE in the form of full stage chaining modes (called "combo" in this game), companies such as Rizing in the form of Medal collecting for score (in the same vein as Battle Garegga, which keeps you on the move the whole game instead of remaining static looking for the micro dodge all the time) and even some COMPILE ship/shot design.

I'll cover up some of the basics so you can understand how the game is played. To score, you need to gather the medals that come out when enemies are destroyed, if you want more and bigger medals then you need to increase your combo/chain. At the end of every level you'll be awarded points for the medals you collected, the maximum combo/chain you were able to get, the amount of lives/extends in your stock and a special bonus for No Missing. There's more to the No Miss bonus than what meets the eye though. You'll get a multiplier for the amount of stages you can No Miss in a row, and if you press your confirm button/input when the "Success" "x2" "x3" etc. comes out then you'll DOUBLE the amount of points this gives you, which I'll refer as a "No Miss Chain" from now on. This amounts for the VAST majority of the score in the game.

There are 6 normal stages in the game, 1 bonus round which plays like a Caravan shooter in itself (more on this later) and a TLB which you have to get to by getting a 1CC while clearing the bonus round. You can No Miss Chain 8 levels basically. The bonus round I was talking about is a Gauntlet where you'll fight a small portion of every pother level and some interesting bosses only found in this gauntlet. If you clear the gauntlet and get a 1CC while clearing said gauntlet then you'll unlock Gauntlet Mode, which is basically a Carvan shooter game in itself.

This opens up the way to talk about unlockables... There's an insane amount of unlockables with 6 ships (4 of which are unlockables and play radically different, more on this later), Gauntlet Mode, GRZ Mode (which basically makes the game an old school shmup where you have checkpoints instead of instant respawn, akin to games such as Tatsujin Oh and Gradius) and finally, Boss Rush Mode. You can play Arcade Mode and Boss Rush with "GRZ Start" style, which makes it a rather tough challenge. There's also a SUPER Arcade Mode you can unlock, this is for the people who like difficulty, it is what I would had expected a second loop of the game to feel like.

About the ships you can pick... I don't want to spoil everything but you have a bunch of ships which differ in several ways, mostly in the ship speed, ship shot and finally and most importantly the ship's option formations. Each ship has several option formations akin to Battle Garegga or any Yagawa game such as Pink Sweets or Ibara, and these affect the way you can play through the levels for max chain as well as the way you approach bosses.

The spritework for this game is immaculate and you'll ahve a hard time finding good games comign out now with such an authentic old school spritework aesthetic. The music is composed by Carina, which makes the best use of an FM synth I've heard in a long while... you can take a quick listen here .

You have a lot of options to tinker with but they're not as easy to find (go to options menu and then go to more options on the bottom right or left of the menu page you're on). While UI isn't the most intuitive throughout the whole game, eveything you need is here.

I've made a good case on all the good thing THIS GAME HAS... now I'll tell you the things the game DOESN'T HAVE... this game does NOT HAVE a Training mode, Steam Trading Cards, a Replay system or Online Leaderboards. It does, however, have a really passioante team behind all of it and they're working on adding some of these features if possible.

The communications and fast replies from the dev team have been absolutely incredible. They look for solutions to any problem, they're answering on any channel possible (steam discussions, forums, discord servers, you name it) in a timely manner and are both friendly and direct.

TL;DR - This game is a classic Toaplan Shmup with more modern Bullet Hell design sensibilities. If you like any of the games I've previously mentioned (Battle Garegga, Truxton/Tatsujin Oh, Dodonpachi DOJ, Batsugun) then you owe it to yourself to give this game a shot. The game isn't perfect, but it has incredible spritework and a ridiculously amazing OST packed in an excellent game. It lacks replays, training mode and online leaderboards. I just hope that if you've read this, you decide to give this game a shot and perhaps you might enjoy it as much as I have so far. If you do take the shot and you like this game, I would recommend trying out the other games Team Grybanzer Fox has worked on (Zenodyne R, ZenoHell, Jet Buster and PARTICULARLY Fire Arrow +) and perhaps be on the watch for TGF's next shmup coming up next month: Zenodeath.

A well made shmup with great graphics that manages to recreate an authentic arcade-style experience without being too difficult for anyone to jump in. After getting your first clear the game offers a host of unlockable ships and modes to keep you coming back for more. If you're an expert in the genre you might find the overall level of challenge a bit low, but there's still plenty of fun to be had for everyone.

This is a great shmup! It's fast and fluid and your weapons feel insanely powerful. It's definitely not too easy, but it doesn't feel too difficult either. Shmup fans will see the Toaplan influence. It reminds me a bit of Truxton and Batsugun.

Repost of the review I've deleted in frustration (because each patch messed with the functionality of the game):

This one's may be considered "poor man's" Toaplan. It looks gorgeous and plays great when it's working.

Let's cross fingers that M2 Shottriggers overcome their "problems" with Windows 10, in order to (legally) bring us Truxton II and Batsugun on Steam.

Good shooting title from a studio with a stronger shooter pedigree than you may realize. Has elements of traditional bullet hell games a la DDP and such but kinda has a bit of Dangun Feveron in it to me with the super fast ship speed and spread shot.

Very good shmup that mixes both classic and modern gameplay. Very solid gameplay and nice visuals (could use a pixel perfect up-scaling though...) The game UI is a bit iffy at times but once you got the settings to your liking there are little need to re-tweak them so that is not a big issue.

Eocene

Competently made Toaplan-style shmup with nicely detailed low-res pixel art and YM2151-style music. A bit too straightforward perhaps - there isn't a single distinguishing gameplay feature here, just hold the fire button down at all times and avoid incoming fire, grab power-ups and unleash a bomb to get out of tight spots - but sometimes that's exactly what I'm in the mood for.

Calamitas
Calamitas

Been playing shmups for 30+ years, this one is a keeper. Fantastic, colorful visuals, terrific music and fair but difficult gameplay. Each stage is fresh and there are no "down" times to make anything drag on too long. Concise and immediate, I really had fun seeing all of the crazy unlockable/secret areas on consecutive playthroughs. My ONLY complaint is that I feel like the default difficulty is a little too easy. But that could also just be me being accustomed to harder stuff. I enjoyed NG:DEV Teams take on XYX a few years ago but it didn't quite hit the right spots (I felt like the game speed was too fast). This team nailed it. Great effort here and it was worth the wait.

Salty Cleric

Grybanser Fox's magnum opus, this game is the best one they have released so far, controls are tight, art direction is finally good (despite the characters being hard to take seriously due to some outrageous character designs) and the game captures perfectly the Genesis era visual style of shmups, controls are tight and responsive, the sound and hit visual effects are super crunchy and satisfying, Carina managed to make a really catchy soundtrack and the chain-based scoring system is super fun to pull off correctly. The standard difficulty may be a tad on the easier side of things and the game veers a lot more into classic shmup territory than danmaku but that doesn't change the fact that this game is super enjoyable. Definitively a must buy for any shmup player that is into the Genesis and Turbo Grafx-16 style of games.

Big thumbs up to this one. I love the sense of speed I get in this game, between the background scrolling to the enemies and their bullets. It's quite exhilarating. There are some cool bonuses you'll find as you improve. Add in a sense of style through the roof, and it seals the deal.

There's been plenty said about the long arc of off and on indie console work from Gryzor in the past, but this is the pinnacle right now in terms of old school arcade indie fast paced shooters. Easy to get into in the way that older toaplan games were from the arcades with a heavy intent on wiping out foes and destroying them (sometimes by being right on top of them), Teamed up with Team Grybanser Fox of the Zenodeath series for development, it's a game that's always good and high on reply and scoring value.

And it's worth it to not wait for a sale on this one.

There is so much I want to say about this game, and yet I don't need to go on a lenghty post to explain it because that's the point: Super XYX is so simple but so addicting and entertaining exactly because, unlike most modern shooters, it doesn't try to be more than your old school 16-bit style top down arcade experience.

Most modern shooters don't seem to put much effort into the gameplay department, they all seem to just dump a bulletspam in your face and call it a day while at the same time try way too hard to focus on the side aspects like gimmicky mechanics or score multipliers, ultimately failing to impress at best or becoming an exercise in masochism as worse.
Super XYX doesen't do any of that, instead it places enemies and hazards just in the right amount and in the right spots to be both a threat requiring your attention and a source of points you do want to shoot at, making the focus of the game not about dodging but instead mastering the most optimal course to increase your score, which increases just by shooting things, picking up the "medals" they drop when they die, all without getting hit ever.
That's it ! No overly convoluted mechanics, no overly convoluted "order" you must kill the enemies to increase your score, the game simply rewards you for shooting things, picking up bonuses, and punishes you just for dying.
I know this seems like stating the obvious, but I still find it ironic certain people (and certain gamedevs in particular) must be explained about the best way to reward your players for being good at games.

Other things the game does well ?
The sprites are literal works of art, the stages look all different and beautyfully colored, the soundtrack is killer, and the game is complete as it is: no DLCs, no addons, nothing of that, you spend your money and get the full experience with a bunch of unlockables that include both extra ships/characters and gamemodes all in one package !

My only gripes with the game are small tecnical nitpicks rather than real issues, like for example how your ship can almost disappear below the bottom of the screen if you fly as downward as you can, while also having room left at the top that you can't fly to, which I find a bit annoying and sometimes confusing,
Another personal nitpick is the lack of a "quick restart" option, simple as that, is annoying to go thorough menus again if you want to start over.
Lastly, maybe is subjective but I feel like a couple ships are badly balanced.
I am not sure if it is intentional, but one of the unlockable ships definitely play better than the others while another one is just worthless, with the better one being a direct upgrade of a starter and the worse one being not worth picking because of how is supposed to deal damage.

In the end, Super XYX is a great game because it doesn't try too hard but instead just does what is right for a game of it's kind.
Simple yet addicting like the games of old, and at a great price too !

[MESSAGE TO DEV NOTICE] The game is really fun and all but there is a problem I've been trying to fix for a long time. Ever since I got this game I played it for hours it's very fun but a few days after I bought it I noticed it wouldn't start up again, every time I pressed the play button it would go blue then green again and not load. I tried to run the program as an administrator but it still would't work, I even tried to trouble shoot it but nothing worked. I was very sad about it. I bought the game on a different site and it worked for a bit but then broke again. If the dev reads this I'll really appreciate it if you could fix this in some way, maybe update it.

It's a decent game. but there's honestly one big problem that makes me give this a negative review.
There's some certain lasers that have very weird hitboxes, specially that laser pattern of the last boss that sometimes is undogeable because of how large the laser hitbox is plus the immense hitbox of our ship.
The hitbox for the ship is just too large, sometimes a laser hits juuuuust the tip of the wing and you die, that's damn frustrating. Very often I die from things that I felt like I have dodged. You can never micrododge in this game, despite it sometimes really forcing you into micrododging certain patterns.

Other than that, it's a solid game, really.

one of the best and most fun shooters I have ever played. this is a must buy for anyone that ever is remotely interested in this type of game, got myself a 1cc on standard and getting right back into it for the challenging mode.

Plays great on Deck. Fun shooter, very stylish retro graphics and gameplay is fast and furious. Recommended!

Solid shmup action with a BANGIN' soundtrack and immaculate retro feel. The only major issue I have with this one is that it can be difficult to keep up with enemy bullets as your own can be the same color (see: Green Knight, one of the default characters). That aside, easily worth the price tag.
