There are more axes then swords. I will let it slide this once.
A tug-o-war flick. Made by the same people that made awesomenauts, so it is a fun game. But don't think of it as anything more than a flick. The balance is really off, and the story is... well... pointlessly silly and directionless.
That being said, I enjoy playing a level of this game every once in a while. It is fun, but doesn't pretend to be anything major.
2D RTS. Limited map pool and some questionable balance. Fun and fast paced gameplay. May or may not be racist.
Ronimo is fantastic. Who cares that there is no other strategy then send hoards of axe throwing vikings. Give ronimo money.
Although I like the work Romino games has done with Awesomenauts, this one missed the mark for me. The game was designed for consoles and mobile devices but unlike some other games from that arena, missed the mark for me on the PC. Although there is undoubtedly strategy involved in sending your minions strolling along the path to the enemy, I, for the most part, still seemed to just be spamming guys along. Just had to be a little careful in what I spammed. As with a lot of my other not-recommended games, if you're looking for a simple game to have some fun or kill some time, there are much better games available than this one.
Very cute, simple tower defense game that's easy to pick up and play.
great single player mode about a BBQ.
multiplayer is funnny to.
I can honestly say this is an awesome game, only thing I wish it had was voice or ingame chat for online play... Sadly can't talk to those you are against to my knowledge unless I'm missing something. Either way, FUN. The humor itself is just hilarious.
Just remembered I had this.
Awful.
A great game. Full of fun action and a hilarious campaign, the game provides tons of fun dueling action between you and your friends, or internat people. It's a funny game to not be taken seriously, unlike the other games of it's kind.
Real cool game, if u like strategie.
Definatly, fun game for spare time
Great for kids! or adults that might not want complexity in their titles
This game has such a colorful art and enjoyable GamePlay. Warm advice, if your planing on buying this game, grab it with a friend and enjoy the casual MP. Problem with the game is that its quite limited to structures and units which ends up not giving you a lot of space to experiment and explore. I will always have a soft spot for Swords and Soldiers but objectively its a 5.5/10
Nice game...
Not bad at all. You get to play as 4 different factions and to conquer the Pepper :P
Nice graphics and mostly and awesome free skin for Awesomenauts for Voltar
6/10
I have spent extensive amounts of time (450+ hours) on the wiiware version of this game, so I will just say that this is worth every penny. From the multiplayer (now made better with online play) to the art (now in HD) and the incredibly fun gameplay (with DLC) this game is a blast. Extremely linear, but once you come to the conclusion that Axe Throwers simply are the best unit, you will understand this game. Anyhoo. Buy it.
You lump of molten love.
RTS without the S. Overly simplistic.
Killed so much time with this on the Wii and now can kill more on PC :L
Not a bad game, but i wouldnt pay the full price...
Best sausage related game on steam.
9/10 requires more sausages.
NICE AND CHEAP GAMES. SHOULD HAVE TRY ;)))
It's a fun little indie game. The graphics are cute. And the story is just fun to play really. And on top of that there is multiplayer to play with your friends!
Pooty and the Butthole's Official Seal of Approval.
(Seal represents a game that we've actually completed. These games may not be the highest critically reviewed in every case, but there was something about them that carried us through to the end. When your library has grown as large as ours have, this means something special.)
The swords and soldiers HD is a title that is good, and recommended for kids. update, make sure to buy if wanting to rage.
I think this game could potentially be racist based on the representation of races/nations?
Anyway, it's a cute compact version of the RTS genre. I played the singleplayer exclusively which gave me a couple hours of fun but nothing too extensive. As everything else with AI there's a skirmish mode so you can just play a regular game against the AI.
I found some of the difficulty balance was a little off. Most levels were easy enough but the hard ones were extremely difficult. There were only one or two of those, though.
Overall I had a good amount of fun with the singleplayer. It began to become a little repetitive after a while as some missions were just "kill the other guys" but I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in playing it.
First game I ever played back on my PS3 in 2010. Its fun, its easy to learn, and its bright and colorful, but there is not much replayability.
I'm not a big fan of 2D war games but this one I really liked.
The levels are fun and the controls are easy to learn.
The only bad thing is that the community is really small so its VERY hard to find an online match.
I loved this game when it was new, don't play it much now but I do that with most of my video games.
I definitely recommend picking this game up if you're a fan of tug-of-war games and/or RTS.
Although the multiplayer is dead (which the game heavily relies on) the game was fun play. But the classes where unbalanced, yellow guy always won :/
Interesting spin on familiar genres.
It has been a long time since I've played this game, but it is definitely worth $10 for the uniqueness of its gameplay and the challenges & multiplayer add additional life. If you enjoy RTS games at all, then it is also a steal when it is on sale.
it was fun at first, but it got a little repetative after a couple of missions. if you are looking for a simple fun game, this is it.
This game is loads of fun, I am always looking for more tug of war games like this!
game was fun for a while then it got boring and repetative but nevertheless it is worth buying on sale and fun to play when you are board.
I only wanted to try this game in case I would prefer a refund, and after a few minutes playing, I really thought it wasn't worth the price and strongly consider it. Still, playing brought me almost at the end of the second campaign after two hours of pleasant playing -so that refund is now out of question.
Is it good ? That's not so easy to tell. It feels like a mobile game, and it is quite simplistic. You click on units to spawn them, and they walk relentlessly towards the enemies coming from the right. You can use spells also, which are crucial to succeed. In the campaign, there are two major kinds of goals: Hold on for some time as your base is continually attacked, or destroy the enemy base.
There are three available factions: Vikings, Aztecs, and Chinese. All of them are quite different and you have to adjust your gameplay, which is a good thing for sure. However there are not many different units per faction, but the fun is they are all different enough, so I guess it's okay.
Overall, it is fun, missions are less than 10 minutes long, which I deem as an advantage. Achievements also are creative and not so easy to unlock (there are not basic grinding or "end the game in difficulty mode i" for i from 1 to 5).
CONCLUSION:
Don't spend the full price for it, it's not worth it. But in sale, you might want to consider adding it to your library, as it is nice, fun, casual, and yet challenging enough.
Simply to shallow of a game... There are better tug's on SC2 for free. I struggle to find any real strategy to this game, not even simple rock paper scissors mechanics. All you have to do is spam out the base melee unit and the ranged unit, all game and with minimal other thought you will win.
There are no hot keys (why cant I map the spells and spawns to 0-9?!?!?!?!?!?!)
I will the the humor is cute, but that doesnt make the game good.
Lastly I had to play the game on my desktop even though I bought it to play on my surface, but the game had no idea how to scale to my surface.
Swords and Soldiers is a simple point and click lane based strategy game.
While there is no micromanagement on multiple resources and buildings, there is the strategy of time and space on deployment of units and powers that can change the tides of a battle.
There is 3 playable factions with one campaign each, the 3 campaigns feel like extensive training sections to each faction with some twists thrown on the middle, story wise there is some jokes here and there but nothing complex,it is somehow entertaining with its light humor.
Each faction has its mini tech tree and focus on a different playstyle: the Vikings focus more on resistance and strentgh of units, the Aztecs focus more on devastating powers and the Chinese on counter attack units.
The multiplayer online, while a wasteland, you can wait the game search for an oponent, while enjoying the single player content. Some battles can end on a overwhelming defeat if the player doesn't have quick thinking, making online matches sometimes not enjoyable.
There is also 3 challenges that you unlock throughout the campaigns that can hook the player while he tries to improve his personal score, don't bother with the online rankings though, they are completely broken.
Overall a good looking and challenging indie game.
Its DLC contain an extra campaign that, while use the core faction as the vikings,it is very varied putting the player on different situations while controlling units/powers from the other 2 factions, the DLC also contains a harder version from the boulder challenge,I recommend the DLC too.
Swords and Soldiers is a goofy 2D real time strategy with simplistic gameplay and dead multiplayer.
You can play as three races: the Aztecs, whose leaders have awesome names like “Fulthrotl” and “Luvsbatl”; the Vikings, who can summon Thor; and the Chinese, whose melee unit, swordsmen, yell “ayyyy chop chop” when spawned. I laugh every time then feel dirty afterward.
The graphics are sprightly and pleasant. The music isn’t annoying—an important consideration when you must listen to the same set of tunes all game—and even catchy at times. The sound is funny—ayyy chop chop, damn it. The gold gathering units are all women whom are referred to as “gold diggers.” I giggled.
I feel as if I’m listing bullet points. I feel as if this stinks of dysphemism, as if I’m hedging my honesty though I’m not. One of the reviewers states that he has nothing negative to say about Swords and Soldiers; this is true for me too, but I also can’t find any salient positives. The game’s aesthetic, especially the humor, is its greatest boon. The gameplay is a bit shallow which betrays its mobile roots. I ENJOYED playing through the campaigns, but I also don’t desire to ever replay the game again.
Swords and Soldiers is simple: you gather gold to purchase units and spells, and units move ever forward until they’re destroyed or demolish the enemy’s base. Spells use mana, which replenishes at a steady rate which can be increased via upgrades, when cast and make up half of the S&S’ complexity. All “skill” in this game culminates in your ability to spawn or spam the rights units while using spells correctly. That’s essentially it; as long as you can spawn units with minimum deference to insuring the units work together (i.e., not spawning ten of the same unit but you know, mixing it up a bit!) and not spamming your spells so that you aren’t left high and dry to an ayyy chop chop invasion, you pretty much win. The campaigns squelch this flaw by hamstringing the player in some way. Objectives are often more than lolsmash the enemy to pieces. The story mode is entertaining because it works against the shallow gameplay.
Hence my conundrum. I enjoyed the handicaps and weird objectives of the single player, but without the constrictions as an impetus, Swords and Soldiers isn’t all that fun. Essentially, it’s the prototypical mobile game: fun in short bursts as the medium requires but without any staying power.
muito bom! divertido simples...
Heh. the game is amazing. what more can i say >w< loved it since it came originally on Wii! 10/10
5 hrs of gameplay in total. The game is OK but unless you get it for under a couple bucks it is not worth it.
Kidsie cute, fun but superficial.
I deem it acceptable for a Tablet or a large obnoxious phone.
i do NOT reccomend as a PC Game however. Look for something else.
Shut up! I know what i'm talking about - i gained an achievement! :)))
This is like a game of cultural tug of war. You play as different cultures with their own units, kinda like a real time strategy game, including having gatherers working while you fight, sending units to do battle in the middle of the map while pushing to get to the other end and destroy the opposing enemy. I would compare it to a MOBA in that way, but "MOBA" is a four-letter word to some people. Oh wait...
Where was I? Anywho, the single player campaign is cute and silly, and I had a nice time with it. I played the multiplayer briefly, and it's alright. I won, which was nice, but I don't generally like the stress of competitive gaming, so I'm not interested in continuing that any time soon. I definitely recommend it for the single player, though. This one is all about the gameplay, but it's different enough from most games to stand out on its own and be memorable in a good way.
For me its a "mini-game" or a game you play on devices, its short, its fun and thats all.
[Achievement Review for Achievements Hunters]
I only recommend this game to Hunters who are looking for a challenge, because although most of the achievements are easy, it has a pair that doesn't, one achievement demands you to survive 30 minutes in a kind of survival game, it is something difficult but not impossible, you will spend, if everything goes well about 15 hours to complete it.
You will also have to look for another fellow Hunter, because it have some online achievements that you need to do with another player.
But the most hateful and terrible achievement is the one in Boulder Mode, you will have to done it perfectly, this is, not kill any soldier of yours and kill all the enemies, it will require that you do not blink in a long time and you will need to concentrate a lot, this could cause some Hunter's hair to go gray, so if you stress easily i do not recommend. But if you like challenges, go for it, since you will feel very good after completing it.
Summary:
Difficulty: 4 / 5
Fun to Complete: 3.5 / 5
Time to Complete: 15 Hours

Fun for a very short time. After that fun time, I started to hate it and uninstalled it quickly, until my next installation. My experience. Hard to explain.
~ 5 hours for a playthrough and online multiplayer, as an option, is dead.
Unless that its good for a cheap sale.
A good casual game!

Rules of the game are very simple. Your base is on left side, enemy base is on the right. The game processes in the 2d world. Units can walk only to the left and right. So, you send armies, enemy send armies. They meet in the center and fight. One of armies gets an advantage and goes forward until reaches enemy base and destroys it.
There are 3 races. Each has 4 unique units and 4 spells. They are really different. Aztecs use a lot of light but poisonous attack. Vikings have a lot of slow effects and etc.
The game offers you 4 campaign with 10 missions each. Nothing exceptional, but nice done. I passed first campaign in 1 hour.

Resume
A nice game. It doesn't cost full price now, but if you take it for 2-3$ it would be a good deal.
This game surprised me, in a good way. Played this for single player as I don't have friends for multiplayer (Alia, Pls buy and fite me irl). I bought this because I had more of an itch for tower defense games and this one seemed so different since it was a side scroller and had minions. It is kind of like a constant game of tug of war between two commanders as you utilize timing and two resources (gold, energy) to your best management to get the upperhand. Also, you may find build order may matter to your strategy. I.e. do you get healing first to keep your minions alive, or maybe lightning to zap the enemies?
The various minion types for both your own and the enemy factions all have different pros/cons you can take advantage of to counter. Spamming just one type of minion probably won't do the trick. There are three factions - Vikings, Aztecs, Chinese -- (but seem to be four campaigns among other modes like endless) with each campaign taking roughly an hour. You start as the vikings and you meet the others as you go on and eventually unlock them so you can play the rest. They all have their own variety of what they are capable of. For example, the Aztecs had a necromancer to raise the dead or a giant golem to act as a tank. Vikings do not seem to have a tank as capable as the golem but they do have devasting power they can use, along with well placed magic to focus such enemies down. I have not tried the other factions yet but it seems their mechanics may also differ where Aztecs may need to sacrifice for example.
There are also actual towers in this game though the minions are the main focus of defense. You can utilize the towers by sending a ranged-type unit to the tower. Note, minions will start moving across the map as soon as you request one. This is part of the timing strategy as you cannot order them to stop. So if you want them to bunch up together and act as a group you need to be mindful of how you send them out. Similarly mana should be appropriately conserved as if all the magic is used up, you may not have enough to cast a spell at a critical moment that can turn the tide of the battle.
It's a very interesting concept and I plan to go back to finish the campaign and try out the endless mode, and maybe even multiplayer even though I usually prefer single-player. But I don't think I will spend too much time on it, it's good for a sale.
Here is a list to breakdown my thoughts on the game:
Pros:
- Creative concept
- Actually has a story even though this genre usually doesn't have much to it! It's simple but slightly humorous
- Fun graphics, fits the game well
- Can be pretty challenging
- Has single-player campaigns in addition to the multiplayer
Neutral:
- Simple/Casual
Cons:
- Feels like could be a mobile game, so can get a repetitive in long sittings
(I am going through my steam library and trying to review everything with enough time for a first impression)
Horrid mobile/flash game. After the first campaign, if you can call it that, I was bored with it. Barely took me an hour to get there as well. Luckily I got this game in the humblebundle monthly deal cause if I had paid for it, I frankly would've been insulted at my own stupidity.
Actually does a really decent job at distilling the basic RTS experience into a far simpler format, and yet it does so with more polish and presentation than other minimalist RTS games do. The push-and-pull, ebb-and-flow of a good RTS match is perfectly captured in the tug-of-war level design here, with just enough silly story justification and interesting mechanics to make things fresh for the duration of the campaign.
Definitely something to get if you're trying to introduce people to the RTS genre, or if you're a fan of light strategy games.
Great game, now I plan to buy the sequel.
The simplistic strategies required by Swords and Soldiers is far better suited to a free flash game than to something you'd shell out money for. It's a real-time strategy game gutted of any scouting, and with only minimal resource discovery or development - leaving it with unit production as the most meaningful choice. While this might perhaps be good for younger children, it leaves someone like myself who grew up with the likes of Warcraft or Command & Conquer cold.
Amazing game
PS: My Steam hours are not accurate
DISCLAIMER: This is a first impressions review, and NOT a full review
Swords and Soldiers HD is a game developed and published by Ronimo Games, the same people behind Awesomenauts
The game offers some pleasant graphics and really vibrant colours, although some ugly glitches here and there, it is pleasant all the same
The game does suffer with some repetitiveness at certain areas of the game but a fun game nonetheless
Swords and Soldiers HD overall, however, is a fun game to play, yet sometimes flawed, but is a great strategy game to play in short bursts!
RECOMMENDED :)

TL;DR - Fun little game! Very good for an airplane or a bus ride.
Simple, yet challenging at times. Good AI system, skirmishes are available on like 9ish maps that don't vary too awful much, but variety is still variety! Very cool for what you pay, definitely worth a 5$ investment. Nearly bugless as far as I can see, very well programmed, only flaw is no hotkeys for the units, which brings me to my only actual negative:
If you're gearing towards online or multiplayer though you're going to be sorely handicapped without a touchscreen as it makes things a whole lot easier.
A minor annoyance:
You can get it into non-fullscreen pretty easily through some workarounds but it works janky at best and you're stuck constantly re-syncing the cursor due to the mouse acceleration the game has that isn't able to be turned off.
All in all, fun game to play, though the settings menu is extremely simplistic. (At least this game has sliders for volume though! Not a big fan of having to click my sound all the way up to 100% before I can get it to 0% lmao)
Side scrolling RTS. Decent for a couple of bucks.
A decent port of a Wii Ware game. It is worth $2 if you enjoy more casual RTS games.
Game doesn't run in a window.
If somehow you do a trick that makes it run in a window, it fails to "hold" your mouse inside the window, resulting on unexpected clicks on your wallpaper.
Its poor designed. It doesn't even let me change my mouse scroll speed.
Swords and Soldiers is a "tug-of-war" RTS game where you must take advantage of multiple unique faction units, spells, and some light resource-gathering (gold, mana) to reach an objective (usually destroying the enemy's castle, which is suitably on the other end of the map). My 5.5 hour playtime is what it took for me to beat every campaign available without the DLC. There are three campaigns following three factions (Vikings, Aztecs, and Chinese) and each has its merits and detriments. I started playing Swords and Soldiers because I wanted something quick, easy to jump in/out of, and non-time consuming, and it mostly hits those criteria.
While the game is available for phones, it is optimized for PC, though there are some ugly design choices in the menus left over. That's not really a concern. Colorful cartoony graphics, a juvenile goofy sense of humor, and simple concepts make this easily accessible for all ages and--quite frankly--a delight for something casual to waste time on. The factions are varied enough in spells, units, and tactics that playing all campaigns in a row doesn't bore. My favorite faction was the Aztecs solely because they have access to necromancy--which, of course, is the coolest concept of all time and a welcome skill-set in any game. :P
As for cons? The difficulty is all over the place. Just when you think you have a feel for one campaign, it spikes tenfold in a random level until you are forced to look up strategies. Because of the game's tendency to use time and/or random acts to trigger events to further a mission, sometimes you have no idea what you're doing wrong because your strategy has worked in similar levels before. This vague sense of direction exists in each campaign and can be a frustrating hurdle--particularly since after learning the correct strategy, it still seems random rather than skill-based. Considering there are about four to six missions with this difficulty spike that I replayed multiple times, you can see how that skews the playtime you might get out of the game. I believe I got this game in a bundle, but I don't think it's worth the price it's asking ($9.99 currently) considering the playtime it offers.
In saying that, it's only fair to mention that playing the campaigns unlocks other modes that I didn't play. It has a survival mode, skirmishes, and multiplayer (can't vouch for the available player base since I didn't try it). Honestly, despite the game's short length it also gets quite repetitive, which is why I felt no need to continue. It also has a few DLC packs and 25 achievements that promise to take multiple playthroughs.
Overall, I enjoyed Swords and Soldiers for two play sessions over the span of a day, but it's not a game I'll likely 100% or come back to in the future. I'd give it a 6/10 and recommend getting it on sale if you like tug-of-war RTS games. This one follows the formula well.
Simple, Fun
A short, casual, fun experience. It boils down the RTS genre to its absolute basics, packs it with some quaint charm and some fun ideas.
Not Hard
Truth be told, it probably isn't going to challenge you. There are maybe two levels I can recall being pressed to make any real effort. Given that it was originally a Wii title, the target audience was clearly younger.
Easy
Just to reiterate: if you're some masochistic edgelord looking for a thrill, instead of this, might I recommend attempting to drown yourself in the sink?
Swords & Soldiers is an RTS, with some tug-of-war elements. This game was originally released for the Wii, through the Wii Shop Channel. It was a good game, but somewhat limited by the Wii Remote, even though the gameplay had been designed for it. With the PC release, using the mouse works a lot better, although it still brings some inconveniences.
The game is fun and simple. The campaign is designed to teach the player the basic elements of the game. As is common in many RTS, there is a technology tree that allows the research of units, spells and passive effects. There are 3 "races": Vikings, Aztecs and Chinese. They are all balanced, so it's up to the player to find the one that best fits his/her play style.
The gameplay works as follows: the player opens a menu with the tech-tree and "researches" the available technologies (units, spells, etc.). After the research period, the technology becomes available for production. Suppose you have researched a new unit: a button appears at the top of the screen, and, once you have the required resources (gold or mana), you can produce it immediately. Once produced, the unit walks automatically and attacks any enemy units it encounters on its way. The player controls two things: which units are produced, and when/where to use the spells.
This is the tug-of-war aspect of the game. Since the battlefield is a 2D scenario, whoever produces units faster or more intelligently, and uses spells more correctly, thus pushing his/her opponent back, wins.
It all means that the game is fun, and guarantees good hours of fun, but it gets boring quickly, exactly because of its excessive simplicity. More often than not stages are limited to unit rushing, and using spells here and there. After the campaign mode is completed, a few matches in Skirmish mode are enough for the game to offer everything it can. Also, controls are almost fully mouse-driven. You can't produce units using the keyboard, which would fasten things up. The mouse is better than the Wii Remote, but pressing buttons would be even quicker with the KB. In addition, the graphics are well done, with well-designed and charismatic characters; and the music is very interesting, with an engaging soundtrack.
I recommend getting this one on a sale. It's not an expensive game, but the full price may not justify the low replay value.
Some tips for those playing for the first time:
- In the campaign mode, prioritize gold collectors, at least until you reach 6 or 7 units. Then start investing in the tech-tree;
- The basic unit of each race is usually the best, especially at the beginning;
- Remember that you don't control units, so the only thing under your direct control are spells. Choose early which ones you will use at that stage and research them as soon as possible, as well as your race's mana boosters, so you have an advantage later, with more mana.
A nice appetizer for Swords and Soldiers 2
An extremely charming and fun casual experience. I'd say I actually like this one more than it's sequel! The ability to search for players online while playing single player in ingenious. Power to Ronimo and their 2D Domination!
For me, any resolution above 1366x768 resulted in the UI stretching past the edge of the screen, making the game pretty much unplayable. I think this somewhat defeats the purpose of 'HD'...
Changing the 'texture quality' setting didn't seem to make any difference.
It also wasted my time, as I had to repeatedly restart the game to work my way through the list of resolutions, because you can't change the resolution in game.
Some of the brownest Vikings I have ever seen. Not sure what's up with that. #DigitalBlackFace #CulturalAppropriation
I like the design of the Viking whammens tho. THICCC.
Nice simplified strategy game.
"Welcome to Estalia gentlemen. I will not lie, the chances of your survival are small. Some may even turn against your friends as living corpses, but you have my word that I will use my arcane gifts to ensure your bodies are given unto Morr's Garden. This is the greatest reward, more than even gold, for the fate of your soul is an eternal concern. Now come, follow me. Strike down the undead that rise against us, allow me to find this eldritch amulet. I ask not for my own selfish studies, but for the good of the Empire."
ok so imagine fortnite but its not actually fortnite
https://youtu.be/3y0WWxnnnPo
Using a cartoonish look helps mask the generally simple gameplay offerings but even with that strength the single lane structure doesn't provide a great amount of depth.
Great strategy game lots of fun and good memories when i was younger. Game have good sense of humor making small not even almost noticable jokes when talking to each other. Awesome game
An impressive 2D RTS game with colorful visuals and even more colorful characters. You get to play as the Vikings, Aztecs, and the Chinese. Music is good and character audio is funny and bizarre.. but in a good way! Lot's of little touches here and there make the game standout. It offers multiplayer and is very easy to operate making it ideal for children and adults. Each civilization is given certain powers that make it unique and offers strategic abilities in conquering your enemy. You also can cast spells in realtime such as possession or snow flurries but it will drain your mana. All in all a very good game and highly recommended.
Played this game as a kid on my parents I-Pad. Loved every second of it and could replay it forever. This will probably be the first game I 100% on Steam because I at least owe it that for all the countless hours of fun I had as a kid playing it.
imagine paying 5$ monthly for this on the IOS app store lol. GameClub can suck a fat one.
A simplistic tug-of-war style game. It's ok if you've got nothing better to do.
