Aerobic with friends while listening to good music. Oh, and it's actually FUN and you feel like a BADASS because it scales well from ages 9 to 99. Everything the creators do is bringing people together, from the one central server to the capability of extensive modding, to the interaction with said friends.

Gonna make it short and simple and say its not for me, played about 8 minutes and did not like the music and the mods are a pain to find and when i did find them there was nothing i wanted to play and i did not find the gameplay enjoyable enough for me to listen to some new songs so im just going to stick with Beat Saber

Synthriders > Beatsaber
This game is just superior to it in every way possible.

This game feels a lot better to how a fun rhythm game should play while in a VR setting.
I love feeling as though I'm actually playing the song, and this game does it in a fantastic way for me. The gliding notes especially add to a very enjoyable experience altogether.
I love the soundtrack too, Dance with the Dead are one of my favourite artists ever, and many others add to the game's variety.

If you're ever debating on picking up this title, I highly recommend it.

I've played a lot of beatsaber, so I feel like I should compare them directly.
The community is smaller, so the custom song selection isn't near as robust, and it has the same problem beatsaber has where the easiest to find maps of high quality are either weeb trash or hyper difficult (Just dig real hard on either thoughm you'll find stuff you like); however, the base songs are so good that I do not care. Literally the electro swing and caravan palace dlc are better than anything that comes out of beatsaber.
Biased? Yes.
I have less time for VR with my job being so physically intense, but this is now my goto for rhythm.

I like this game more than BEAT SABER because it is more safe to play at small area.

It is synthwave, but you can dance. It's really good, but I'm too lazy to implement FBT into this.

If you like beat saber you must try this. It's a lot different from beat saber so you will not have the same experience. It even has an official custom song support which is a very nice touch. I played this during the free weekend to see what kind of a game it is. After the free weekend ended I had to buy it.

333 hours playtime (Steam and Oculus combined), still enjoying this game and playing almost daily. Visuals are stunning and the built-in songs are so much fun to play (the workout I get out of this is a welcomed 'byproduct' :)
Longest playtime I've had with any game and I can't see myself stopping anytime soon.

i played this game for a couple hours and beat saber too before i decided to just stick with this game. its fun, has just the right music (for my taste) and theres a lot of custom songs. base game comes with many more songs than beat saber.

i spent the last two days trying to beat this one song in hard with sudden death and faster orb spawn and i still cant finish it - looking at the leaderboard im not the only one apparently (its empty). this kinda reminds me of playing dark souls when im stuck at one boss and i try to beat that boss for hours and days. frustrating but also addicting (at least for me).

one important aspect for me is that synth riders isnt straining on my handwrists like beat saber is, as beat saber gets my handwrists hurting.

blabla, just get this game already!

I really like this game. Great overall experience. Even just the main screen is so beautiful and detailed, it's a pleasure to sit in the lobby and look around. 10/10 would recommend - beginner friendly but also able to ramp up to an intense workout if you want it! Detailed review by category:

DLC & Music options: There's a nice mix of genres - and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of harder rock/punk etc options. I bought all of the DLC, and generally I think every pack is worth it. The Electroswing, Caravan Palace, Fixt, and Synth Essentials packs are great value purchases though - full of bangers.

Physical Movement: Once you are used to the cadence of the game, it's a more dance vibe than Beat Saber. Having played Normal through Expert, you can really work up a sweat on Expert/Master levels, or just enjoy a nice cardio dance without too much muscle stress on Normal/Hard. The range is nice, and each version is fun - not just a discount version of the hardest levels. I like the range of motion in this game - it feels less monotonous.

Colourblind Accessibility: You can change the game wand colours to anything you want on the RGB spectrum, and there are at least 8 textures for blocks to choose from, if not more. I have not looked at more accessibility options, but would be happy to do so if desired.

Bugs, Mods, & Custom Songs: About the same complexity as Beat Saber for custom songs. Joining their discord is the best way to stay up on instructions and any issues, though there are comparatively few things to break compared to Beat Saber. YUR fit mod (heart rate sensor) is built in, and works like a dream, you don't even have to mod it.

Streaming/Content creation: A fair amount of the songs are free to monetize. They've provided a handy page for you to review your rights with each: https://synthridersvr.com/music-licensing/

Room and cam set-up/customisation: A nice amount of options here, and easy to set up. I haven't explored into green screen or mixed media capture with a camera though, so look elsewhere for that feedback.

Others: There are a fair amount of community challenges put together for you, or that you can put together if you want. I haven't participated, but it looks like it could be fun.

Fantastic VR dancing game. This is def. better than Beatsaber, which doesn't have you dancing and is just wrist-induced arthritis. This game is very similar to Holodance, except I feel like the beatmaps are designed to actually make you dance more, since they aren't just conversions of maps from other arcade games.

There is custom maps, backgrounds, and its all free on their website. Hundreds of songs ready for download.

The DLC environment experiences are highly worth it and I would recommend those as well. I'd like to see more (and for free lol); but I understand they probably take a long time to make since they are full fledged 3D vr experiences bundled in to a beat of a song.

If you care about fitness, this game apparently tracks your activity and it def. can be a workout on the harder difficulties.

Its controversial, but i much prefer SynthRiders over Beatsaber. Beatsaber feels still, and doesnt really force your body to do anything; just rigid movements for your arms and wrists with the occasional duck and sidestep. When things get hard, its not because its too fast, but because you cant see the direction of the slice until your too late, and i find myself having to practice and memorize the moves in order to do anything hard.

Synth Riders puts me into the flow much more and feels way more natural. It makes you hold notes, sometimes getting your arms twisted up which is fun to watch people get tangled up lol It is much more about playing your way imo, which is why i enjoy it. The modding community is not as active as beatsaber, but there are a few good ones. Really wish the song variety was a bit better... but its one of the games i actually keep coming back to

The music is great, the physical exercise is great, the levels are great, the challenges are great, It just makes me feel good every time I play it. And it keeps getting better all the time. Continued great support, great community, great content. Multiplayer is fun too. Just fantastic in every way.

This review is a hard one this game is a great game I spent more hours on the quest 2 version due to me having issues with the PC version I got the PC version on steam first got it on the quest 2 for on to go play. Now I got a valve index but the game still was having issues with gameplay the issue was mainly the notes being hard to see on both headsets, after upping the render resolution from 100% to 150% fixed my gameplay issue. I say its a good play if you want to move its a good way to burn calories.

Epistemic

I play a lot (seriously a lot) of rhythm games, and one thing that's started to annoy me as of late is that quite frequently the notemaps (not sure what to call them in this game) will be symmetrically repeating patterns. For example, in a Dance Dance Revolution-style (DDR) game where you press arrows, you might get up, right, down followed by up, left, down or right, left, right followed by left, right left; a different example: in Pistol Whip (great game), if I see a sequence of enemies on the right side of the screen, they will almost always be followed up by the same sequence, but on the left side (and/or a mirrored sequence of enemies).

While there are certainly some repeating/mirrored patterns in Synth Riders, it feels much more varied, with a lot more creativity ("randomness" isn't the right word, and I feel creativity fits much better). So I want to say thank you very much for that. It really feels like a fresh experience!

This amongst all the other things you've done: all the levels (backgrounds?) with the little details added in (like the head that looks at you, or the posters), the playable arcade cabinet, etc.; these things make the game feel extremely special.

Best VR rhythm game I've played so far. Really gets you moving and feels like dancing, more than others. Turning on at least 90 degree spin mode is necessary in my opinion, it really gets you moving and makes it a lot more fun.

If you like rhythm games, then this one will not disappoint. I think it is a bit more lax than BS (Beat Saber), and it gives the player time to move and dance. So I love to dance and play this game:)

My muscles burn and I burn calories, while I learn some cool moves for dancing. Now this game is great! I play it as a sport for myself.

Grumble X2
Grumble X2

Highly polished rhythm game with a great included song collection, an active community providing many more amazing FREE custom song maps, and an almost overwhelming number of configurable options and modes to let you play it your way or mix things up. You can either just vibe out to some chill beats or get in an intense, sweat-dripping cardio exercise session to some frenetic punk rock.

I find the game's core feedback loop to be more crisp and satisfying than other rhythm games I've tried: Essentially, you surf down a landscape playing a wild game of connect-the-dots with your hands. It's brilliant in its deceptive simplicity, as you realize you're pulling off more elaborate dance moves as you master the higher difficulties.

If I had a suggestion: As in other rhythm games, some songs are much more difficult than others, but new players are just sort of thrown into the experience and have to figure out what's what. There could be a simple campaign which plays through these songs in a structured order, perhaps also slowly introducing some of the other mechanics.

Great game!

Bigger choice of songs would be great.
And nicer UI that doesn't fade to the default Steam VR background between stage and song.

Torix

Visuals are dripping with synthwavey goodness and I liked the default music and music packs a bit better than Beat Saber's initial offerings. If you enjoy Beat Saber and are looking to add some variety into your play this is a pretty solid option. As for me, I enjoyed myself and I'll definitely be back to play more. And will be looking into mods ;)

Great Rhythm game that makes you wonder why it isn't the standard over Beatsaber...
Great Variety of music genre, game modes and difficulty
The game makes me move quite a bit and can easily turn into a pretty good workout on expert and master difficulties!
You can download 1800+ customs tracks on a website called Synthriderz and play them extremely easily
I'd recommend trying it and in the 2 hour trial period you'll know weither you like it or not

Stockdoodle
Stockdoodle

This game is what I always come back to when playing VR games. The right songs on higher difficulties w/ the orb speed increase can give you a pretty good cardio workout. It's the first time in my life I've had to force myself to stop doing cardio instead of giving myself permission to quit early.
I will say the DLC songs are much more fun than the ones that come unlocked with the base game. The Caravan Palace pack is just amazingly well done. Adrenaline Pack gives the best workout, though.
If you bought Audio Trip and felt like it wasn't fast enough and kinda dull, give this a try. I played Audio Trip after this and was really disappointed.

Compared to Beat Saber: Synth Riders flows more smoothly, and its mechanics are more sympathetic to whole-body movement. You can dance at higher level play, and in almost all custom maps. Most of that comes from its core mechanic: putting your hands where the orbs are. The downside is that every individual orb is easier, and adding too many becomes cluttered, so the hardest maps seem to be easier than Beat Saber. But Beat Saber kills my wrists, and whole-body movement is non-viable in most maps I play - so I prefer this.

xTfe
xTfe

this is one of the most fun games I have played in a long time. I love the music and physical interaction, as a dancer I find myself really just geeking out. It's best to do this in a room where nobody will see you, and where you don't have a nice 27" monitor you knock over and kill because you're a goofy dork swinging your arms around like a drunk giant bird. But it is worth it :) Also there's thousands of add on songs for free with synthriderz on the web.

Beege
Beege

This is probably my favorite music rhythm game. The music selection fits the game so well and just feels great. I had probably 100 hours in the free Vive Infinity version, but when I saw the Lindsey Stirling pack come out, I decided it was time to buy the complete package over here on Steam. Muse and Lindsey Stirling are both top notch experiences in this game, I'm so glad I splurged and bought em all.

Cemtex
Cemtex

I prefer this to beat sabre, it just feels more like dancing whereas beat sabre feels more like trying to play it specifically. My only complaints are the difficulty curve is way too high, I find the normal difficulty a little bit easy but the next difficulty up is next to impossible for me. Also the playlist without DLC/mods is a little bit limited.

Izzy Paradox

My number 1 VR game, especially for working out [even if it's "only" my 2nd most aggressive workout] as it has such extraordinary flow, full body movement, it's so much fun, the music is SO GOOD. the Muse pack is on another level in its movement demands. I love flailing like a maniac to the beat, and dancing as if I actually know how to dance. feels so much better than Beat Saber, no regrets buying this game and most of the DLC twice, when I wanted it on SteamVR rather than Oculus, as well as buying it for friends :)

Where I find this one out performs BeatSaber is in that the gameplay suits many more different types of music meaning a broader range will be possible.
For BeatSaber to flow, the song and map needs to be suited for the game, whereas here - due to the slide, two hand and and more varied hand/arm movement, the game is overall more fluent "despite" the music which is a huge plus as it allows for more custom songs.

I also find this one more difficult than BeatSaber, so if that's what you're after you're well on your way. Although I still need to tweak the colors as I also find this one more ....... "confused" in appearance which can be taxing and also adds to the difficulty. It's visually "louder".
I did have to turn off the moving ground as it did make me motion sick. Maybe I can turn it on when I'm better at the game, but it's nice you can tweak so many settings.

I do recommend this game, but I'm not sure I find it overall a better experience than BeatSaber (yet), but I find they complement each other quite well as they do similar, although slightly different, things.
I guess a lot of it will come down to how much and how well the modding communities keep supporting either and which of the communities and games best support your taste in music.

But overall, it's a large thumbs up. Recommended

Stumbled across this game half price and read the rave reviews. Decided to give it a try as it could always be refunded. Having played this a bit I can say... those reviews are spot on! This is an absolute cracker of a VR game. I doubt I will purchase DLC as the free songs are so good. I recommend that you add "Choices" to the favourite list for a start. Best part are the free to download custom songs made by fans. "Kick Start My Heart" and "Staying Alive" have had everyone in the household laughing as well as the dancer with the headset on. So much fun. Be warned; you will need to change those sweat covers on your headset.

Senzoba
Senzoba

This in my opinion is better than beat saber reason for me is the devs interact with the community by doing events every week and fixing bugs whenever they pop up. They also support custom songs. With this game i'm getting more of a workout with the new spin mode I found out about. I would definitely recommend this game if the thinks I said above interest you.

The Handsome Tuna
The Handsome Tuna

Neutral / not recommended (unless you really like the default songs)
I thought this would be similar to Beat Saber, maybe a little bit closer to dancing, but it doesn't feel much different. I tried some basic and some custom/downloaded songs, none of them clicked. You are simply catching the orbs and avoiding some walls. It wasn't as fun or active as I expected.

+ Easier on the wrists than Beat Saber
+ Easy to start playing (as these type of games usually are)
+ Options! Especially comfort options; adjust height, colors, movement, lights, option for pausing speed so you don't accidentally open the menu mid-song...
+ There's a nice collection of custom songs available and they're very easy to install

- Moving background on by default (you can turn this off!)
- Changing game options doesn't save every time
- Hitting targets produces constant sounds that distract from the song (can be turned off)
- Failing a song seems to just happen without warning (so I just turned the no-failing option on)
- Base songs available are very "safe" and feel similar to one another (which is great if you enjoy this specific style of music! This is obviously personal preference.)

Played on the original Vive headset + index controllers. Game works fine, had to manually adjust the sizing to get the orbs spread out better. The default controller settings had me accidentally scrolling everywhere in the menus and had to be remedied by changing controller mapping to disable the scrolling.

I play Synth Riders practically daily.

My sure one thing to get up a sweat. The cardio of my exercise regiment. It is fun! And the music! I love the Swing and especially the violin. I discovered that even the electronic/digital music is wonderful to "dance" to. I introduced my little sister (she is only in her 60's) to Synth Riders and now her husband tells me she does Synth Riders one hour every evening! I've downloaded every DLC. I play every experience. I don't play multiplayer. My competition is with myself. I try to beat my own score and when that becomes too easy I will go to the next level. So far I can do all at "Normal", but I think I should be going to Expert on many of the songs now. What do I dislike about Synth Riders? Absolutely NOTHING
So it is obvious that I recommend this game. How could I not?

Norumeron
Norumeron

In the vein of rhythm games this one feels like it does more than flailing in a single direction... it has you moving/grooving to the music in almost a bit of a dance. Well worth picking up & playing for or for a cardio workout.

I really enjoy the fact that the devs allow so many custom songs, some of which include songs that they sell maps for (The dev made maps are far higher quality than custom maps and worth the value). The only thing I would wish for regarding the custom tracks is that if the devs could have some sort of 'verified' catagory so you know that any given song on a particular difficulty level makes sense, some of the custom songs are easy on 'master' and others are impossible for beginners or intermediates on basic difficulties.

Do love the game however and am addicted to some of the songs now.

Being offered more freedom and creativity in movement is one aspect that differs from other rhythm games, such as Beat Saber. The music is top notch, the environments are equally as impressive, and the built in YUR watch is pretty sweet.

A dumbed down Beat Saber with worse music and less content. Going into this, I expected plenty of nu-Synthwave given the game's title and aesthetics, but it was even worse than I expected. The store page vaguely states: "Dance to 55 licensed songs of various genres". However, the OST is roughly 50% nu-Synthwave, 30% Electroswing, and 20% a smattering of other genres (most of which are DnB or Dubstep). While the early tracks in Beat Saber were weak, they at least improved with bigger name artists and higher quality beat maps over time. This came out four years ago according to Steam and still feels like it's from four years ago, despite still receiving updates.

I can generally tolerate nu-Synthwave after Spotify crammed it down my throat for 3+ years but its a bit astonishing that there's none of the big names here. Where are Carpenter Brut, Pertubator, MAVS, or ALEX? They've done video game soundtracks in the past, are their licensing fees too much now for a VR rhythm game? How can you have a "Synthwave Essentials" category with almost no big names? Nitpicking the whole OST, Das Mortäl is the only artist supplying a track that I like. Sunset Neon provide two tracks off of their 2017 album and neither of them are "Never Dance Again", Blue Stahli and Voicians dropped probably their most boring tracks possible, and Scandroid is just kinda... there. Everyone else on the OST are either C tier or Literal Whos (Dance With The Dead can't write drums to save their life). Again, there are some good artists in this OST, but for some reason they licensed weak, boring tracks, or had other tracks on the same album better fitting (and more popular) for a rhythm game.

In terms of actual gameplay, imagine Beat Saber but your sabers are orbs that are slightly larger than your fists and you're hitting balls flying into your face or crotch half the time. The environments are a bit disorienting because instead of the orbs coming to you, you are moving through the environment. This might be okay for the average person if you could play seated but there's also obstacles to dodge like Beat Saber. The hitbox size is way too close to your hands and resulted in me mashing my fingers several times with my Index controllers before I switched to my Vive wands. As much as I enjoyed steering wheel-spinning gameplay, I didn't want to lose any fingernails over synthwave music. Judging by the fact that the majority of the global leaderboards are Quest users, it seems like the devs designed the game for controllers with some reach anyway.

This might be a game that can be "fixed with mods" as other reviews have brought up, but I don't enjoy the core gameplay enough to justify it. Synth Riders has probably the best beat matching of any VR rhythm game I've played but it's a shame that there isn't good music to go with it. If you enjoy nostalgia-pandering genres or any of the artists mentioned above, this might be worth the $25 for you. At this point though there's enough VR rhythm games that I wouldn't recommend it over Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, or Ragnarock.

The_Ring-Bearer
The_Ring-Bearer

While I think that Beat Saber might ultimately be a better game, I've found myself enjoying Synth Riders a lot more for attempts at tricking my dumb brain into exercising. At the very least I feel that the game can manage to achieve the "Flow" state which games like this and Tetris try to reach.

Some of the game's levels could be better designed though. As it is common enough to have high notes block my vision to see the next notes. I also feel like the penalty for missing a note is way too harsh as it takes hundreds of notes to recover after reaching the max 6x modifier.

But its still a fun VR rhythm game that is worth checking out.

This game is an absolute blast that never gets old. There's a ridiculous number of songs to choose from. After the 55 songs in the base game, I have 13 DLC songs and another 125 custom songs. No matter what music you are into, you're gonna find a lot of what you like.

When I was new to Synth Riders, I'd play until my arms ached and then I'd play some more. After 50 hours, Synth Riders can't wear out my arms any more, and I still play until I'm out of breath. We all know there's only like 5 good vr games. This is one of them.
