Gameplay is good but not horror enough to make me scared. graphics is beautiful, Story kinda mediocre, this game so stuttering, even with RTX 4090. what a mess, but i still recommended this game. performance issue can be fixed with next update (probably).

Really enjoying this, game hasnt been giving me too much grief in terms of performance.
I will say the combat isn't for everyone, but I am having a blast. Once you get the feel for it its smooth. Really keen to see where this story goes.

I honestly don't know why people are giving bad reviews. This game is awesome so far. Combat is heavy and stressful, graphics are stunning, cut-scenes look awesome and gameplay is smooth and responsive. All the negative reviews are for "stuttering" and frame drops. The only stuttering I saw was in the very beginning of the very first cut-scene for maybe 5 seconds.
Turn off v-sync
Turn off motion blur
Switch to Direct X-11
bad reviews because people don't know how to tune settings to match their hardware

InstableMonster
InstableMonster

the stutter is horrible, it ruins the ambiance, it announces jumpscares, will eat input during combat and not register that you're holding left or right to dodge, its a shame because it looks like there is a really good game underneath but the lack of optimisation on PC makes it a bad overall experience, it is mostly a shader problem with the game loading them during gameplay, so the saddest part is that it could all have been advoided by having them load when you launch the game

As it currently stand this game is a nightmare...i spent almost an hour running benchmarks and trying to get this thing to run stable. The frames dropped frequently and stuttered like crazy. hot mess.

Disappointment that is all there is to say. It is just a playable tech demo that only looks gorgeous but anything past graphics it simply is just bad. Performance wise it was constantly stuttering with frame drops. Combat is just a QTE simulator with no real way to fail when holding the dodge key and waiting for the animation to finish and attack and just keep repeating. Story wise the short bit I played there was nothing there and hearing reviews it doesn't get any better or deeper. What we all thought was going to be the next Dead Space just turned out to be a good looking benchmark test and nothing more.

Runs Okay at 1080p, no motion blur, no depth of field with FSR2 on, (Mixed high and mid graphics options) seems to do better for lower end PC users rn (Currently running on GTX 1080, i7 7700K, 32GB ram)

Will update this review later upon completion and updates.

for now all the negative reviews are about being able to run the game, so keep that in mind.

Me: "Mom can I have Dead Space?"
Mom: "We have Dead Space at home"

Dead Space at home: [this] or like many have already called it: the stutter protocol.

Outdated, unpolished, unfinished and incoherent. A disappointment I couldn't bear playing for another minute after my first hour so I refunded this.

---

It is very telling when the first people you cite in your credits right after the producer, are the CEO and the VP of your company. Krafton does it again - taking a talented bunch of people and beating them in a bloody submissive pulp until all they can do is output some lukewarm product that is a shadow of its premise. These are after all, the original devs of Dead Space... they don't have to prove their craft to anyone, but somehow here we are, judging this sorry mess of a game.

I feel bad for the devs; I'm sure they did all they could, and then some. Let's not forget Glenn Schofield's proud words a few months ago: "U do it cause ya luv it.” No Glenn, they do it cuz you forced them to deliver this unfinished product before Christmas because your leadership team told you to.

It is damning to see this happening 2 years after the Cyberpunk fiasco. But make no mistake; unlike Cyberpunk, there will be no redemption arc for this game. Feel free to quote me on this: this game will be abandoned in 6 months from now. Anyone thinking this game will get the necessary support and aftercare that it should get, should take a long hard look at Krafon's track record.

To the devs reading this: I'm sorry you poured your soul into this, and will likely only face even more pressure, toxicity and micromanagement. It's a bright world out there, don't stay with a company that clearly doesn't give a rat's ass about you or your craft. Stay safe and much love!

Literally unplayable in its current state, every new load zone tanks fps to 10fps for multiple minutes until it recompiles shaders. Haven't even been able to play if far enough to where people say the combat turns to shit.

WHat the hell is this? it should not be released in this state for pc...seriously have you guys tested before launching it in pc,,,how the hell developers agreed to release in this broken state. game stutters like hell,,not even able to playable frame,,fps and fts stutters like anything..feels like rtx3060ti seems nothing for this game.. huge disappointment in 2022,,2022 ends with a disappointment note for me, am not gonna preorder any games hereafter, wasted my hard earned money.

Initially it was a stutter mess yes, but a lot of games freshly installed don't run well until a reboot and some shader compilation. After rebooting windows the game has played almost perfectly, almost like night and day. You cant have any of the Ray tracing stuff on or fps will tank. Motion blur off helps but I'm often pegged out at 4k - 144 fps with a 4080, 13700k cpu, 32gb ram, win 11 with the latest game performance patch fix. FPS rarely goes below 90. Actually really really nice graphics and effects. Some of the most lifelike character models I've seen in a game. I know it needs some patching but it has a AAA quality feel to it. If it weren't for the shader/loading stutter and initial install stutter, the game would be getting much better player reviews imo.

If you don't have a godlike PC with a quantum processor, be prepared for endless stuttering.

This game clearly DID NOT had a quality assurance test on PC before being released. No DLSS, would be a huge boost. AMD F2 or whatever, doesn't help.

My poor RTX 3060 got a beating from this game even on Medium settings, heavy stuttering still can be found whenever a new assets is displayed on the scene.

Stay away, unplayable as of 1.0

one of the best visuals so far in a game but utter shitty optimisation. i had waited for this game for so long but it was a disappointment.Got dizzy after playing it for 10 mins. I am gonna refund sorry. Maybe when the game is fixed ill buy again.

Pro Tips; If you're on a 1080ti or probably any 10 series, it's not bad at all. If you're on a 30 series or 3080 which seems to be VERY common; you're gonna have a bad time. Try the stuff below and/or cry deeply and wait for updates.

I'm on a 1080ti btw.

Turn off motion blur and vsync (use gsync or freesync instead, seems ok)

COPY PASTA from LEKSER;
UPD: Do this to fix micro-freezing -> Open config file:
%localappdata%\Local\CallistoProtocol\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\Engine.ini

Add this at the end of the file:
[/script/engine.renderersettings]
r.CreateShadersOnLoad=1

Also try switching to DX11

Game is good, just wait for a patch that will fix DX12 shader-caching issue. Right now shaders cache in real time which causes microfreezing.

Will update with an actual review later. So far it gives me GOOD Dead Space nostalgia/feel. Hopeful

Yeah, we are reading the reviews. But people need to learn to cope. i just had to barely adjust my settings and now im fine. im sure the devs are working hard on a patch that'll smooth stuff out. but i am LOVING the game so far.

Not sure what everyone is complaining about. Only saw stuttering here and there and game was still playable on my msi laptop at 1080p high graphics. Almost 7 hours deep and loving every moment. Can't wait for new game plus to come in Feb.

RX 5600XT - 5600X Runs just fine on 1440p with FSR 2.0. Everything on medium.

Microstuttering is a thing every now and then but nothing game breaking for me. Switched to DX11 helped solve a lot of issues. Recommend it now but definitely hope they patch it soon cause this game does have a lot of potential, just a shame that the technical side of things ain't great for some (read: most) people.

I'm Rock Hard
I'm Rock Hard

Horrible optimization, NOT ready at launch. NO audio on this and only this game, tested on multiple sound producing programs to confirm. Tested settings for over an hour (HDR on AND off, tried 1080p, 1440p virtually no difference) and virtually zero improvement with crazy amount of visual stuttering. Using a 3080, ryzen 7, 32gb of ram, nvme drive, a pretty upscale rig that works great with everything else.
I think this may be the first refund I've ever requested from Steam which sucks as I love the Dead Space series and was looking forward to this. I'll circle back in a month or two when it inevitably goes on sale and, hopefully, they have it fixed.

HUNGRY_JACOB

great game devs and the actors did a marvellous job at this 10/10 as for the people complaining about the stuttering dont they know that the game doesnt have any loading screens so it has to load a new section of the game each time you move up a ladder or something like really people give it a chance before you drown in your own negitivity

This game, I was so excited for it and while it looks very good it runs quite poorly no matter how much I messed with it I could not get it to run smoothly at 30/60 or 120 frames, it likely needed more time in the oven.

it needs some updates to the game play as well.

I appreciate the effort and I will very likely buy it again in a week or two but currently I've got to return this, especially after buying the deluxe I feel a little ripped off, I should have known when the embargo was up right to the day of release.

In a lot of ways its an updated dead space without the polish and an upgrade system, I dont know where they went wrong because the set up is amazing, I really wanted this to be good.

Frozzenblood
Frozzenblood

Stutters occasionally during gameplay and a bit more during cut-scenes or enemy spawning etc(tho I'm using a high-end setup so probably a lot worse for others).
Has some issues with saving where loading a checkpoint doesn't always spawn some of the items you picked up before the game saved.
Other than that, it's quite a fun game to play.

Red Eagle
Red Eagle

It is unacceptable to ship a game in this state. Fps drops to 15 fps with a 3060ti/5600x/32gbram kai nvme is not justified.
Before you ask for 60 euros for a game maybe test it before green lighting it.

Neolore
Neolore

First let me say that after configuring it properly and running the benchmark sereral times, I could limit the stutter to a minumum. But they remain there. So the performance was not the reason why I don't recommend this game. The constant crashing did however pose a problem. When every 20 minutes you get a kernel error that is very bad (this kan be damaging to your rig).

What follows contain some minor spoilers

Now on to the gameplay.

Sound and graphics are amazing. That I can't deny. But everything is else is not.
Story: almost none
Scares: cheap .. and a looooot of them
Combat: not working
Weapons: barebone
Enemies: repetive
Bosses: didn't encounter one the first 5 hours and the game is about 10 hours long

What frustrateds me the most is how close this game looks like Dead Space. The story (dumbed done one), the stomping, the health and energy, the aiming, the atmosphere, the lockers stuff in it, etc..
At one point I was hoping to see some tie in with Dead Space, but it didn't.

Even if I'm 5h in, I am going to ask for a refund because this game seems to do a lot of arm to my computer. Between the constant crashes and the overhours the graphical card must do, just to run it on normal.

I am sooooo dissapointed in what they dared deliver here. The ideas where great .. the execution not.

Lancebringer
Lancebringer

First a remark regarding the majority of frustrated reviews.
I tweaked my graphics settings to permit smooth gameplay, DX-11, Depth of field -off, Motion blur -off, Film Grain -off, limit frame rate to near monitor refresh, vsync -off, fullscreen (no windowed modes).

Game of the year on horror category in my opinion worth the wait you need to play to understend what i say and yea its look veryyy similar with Dead Space so what if Dead Space was first cant other people copy and create another story another game me i think all developers have this right and by the way they are EX developers from Dead Space so stop cry they copy Dead Space they copy what they create logic if they love that series and cant recreate with that name and yea have some BIG perfomance/optimization problem for that turn off vsync set fps on 60 turn off motion blur and Depth of field and turn on AMD FSR 2.0 that will help with these problem but not too much wait for on update will come 100% and fix the game to look 10/10

It absolutely breaks my heart to say this but The Callisto Protocol is not worth 60-80 dollars. I hope we get a second game from Striking Distance but if you come into this thinking its the next Dead Space you will be really disappointed. Callisto is just okish the thing that makes it absolutely not worth the money is the PC stability and performance, couple that with some extensive DLC plans and Denuvo bs and in my eyes you have a stinker. I am so disappointed, I really really wanted to love and obsess over this game like I did the Original Dead Space games. Game developers please please stop treating you PC fan base like we are all pirates and criminals. I buy every single game that I play, why do I need to be punished for that?

Is a Denuvo game going to still launch on my PC in 10 or 15 years? Seriously whats up with that? I want to support you guys because I love what you do, but every year it gets harder and harder when that love is not mutual. I want your games to succeed and I want your studios to thrive but I also want to own the thing I paid for. There are very few industries out there that treat their fans and customers as poorly as game studios do, eventually we will collectively get sick of it. Dont forget that the game industry crashed in the 80s, it can happen.

till there is a patch, mine works fine with the following settings:

Graphic Preset -> Medium
Borderless -> Fullscreen
Disable VSync
Frame Limit -> 60
Disalbe Motion Blur
Upscaling -> AMD FSR 2 (Quality)
keep Raytracing off

at my system it now runs nearly smooth (i have 5800X3D and 3090)

MurataKatsuki
MurataKatsuki

Poor performance (literally unplayable)

Player will be forced to take every fight
not being able to run away from any kind of enemy (weird, because this kind of game usually give players options to fight or flee)

player being forced to fight but the game don't give enough resource to do so

Melee combat is only reliable when fighting a 1v1.

still, the difficulty is not an issue.
It's challenging and pretty much enjoyable. The real problem is the performance of the game which is absolute trash

Boers3un
Boers3un

Did no one test this game on PC before they released it??? Stutter city, don't think a 4090 will even save you seems to be bad code or design. Controls also feels off to me but that might just be me. Story is decent so far but for crying out loud give us a patch to fix the performance problems.

LordFarQuaid
LordFarQuaid

Very fun game even through the stuttering although i do recommend waiting the (hopefully) one week for a fix, This games atmosphere is phenominal the combat is very fun and takes a small bit of getting used to i wish they had an option to turn off the snap aim after a melee combo. but so far after about 2 hours the game is very fun and enjoyable.

I dont know what all these girls are crying about here in the reviews. my game is running at a solid 120 fps high/med settings. i only have a 3070 rig, if i can get a solid 120fps so can you ladies. Disabling vsync should have your game running smooth!

Alfred Neuman

There are some stutters, mainly in cut scenes. Running in ultra with vsync, motion blur and upscaling off. I haven`t died once because of game performance. Sad to see people are having problems, this game is good. It`s giving me the same feeling as Dead Space did back in the day.

Congratulations, by finding this review you have proven worthy to play this game. Here are your steps to fix the stutter before you even know it exists. (The actual problem is a rendering issue, the game may still stutter on load in of new areas).
1. Understand, this game was made for HIGH END rigs and next gen systems. If you have a walmart dell, this isnt for you. (2k series GPU is a minimum in my opinion)
2. Download the most up to date driver for your card and restart.
3. Load up the game
4. Go into settings and turn off V SYNC and MOTION BLUR.
5. Restart the game ( THIS IS REQUIRED )
6. Enjoy not being one of these morons.
PS. Other extra graphics settings can and will make this worse or better, for optimum performance its up to you

One of the only games I've ever refunded.

Performance is atrocious and stutters are abundant. Combat is uninspired at best and simply doesn't work at worst.

Doens't run great, not as bad as most people say though (on a 1080 and i7 7700k, about 60 fps most of the time with default settings)
Occasional suttering, annoying but bearable
Seems to be very well acted

The melee combat sucks ass
You can't disable motion blur in game

Maybe it'll be good on a technical side in a couple of months, but I don't know if I'm gonna bother again...

Constant stuttering and full blown crashes. Not worth $60 in this state. Just another AAA game for the bargain bin in a year or two. Doesn't matter if you have a Nvidia or AMD gpu its just poorly optimized. I can see why they had a review embargo.

I was REALLY looking forward to this game since the announcement and pre-orders came out, what a complete let down, it is a stutterfest, live pre-cache means no buffer means stutters every 2 secs, repeatedly, and "Access-Violations" causing CTD`s every 10 mins. To do a comparison this game premise was good, the actual delivered end product is horrible, kind of like booking an Iron Maiden ( I am an old fart ) concert and getting Justin Bieber instead, its messy and unplayable, avoid like the Plague and play another game, if you really REALLY want to give this a play wait for a steam sale with at LEAST 70% off, it may just be worth that amount.

TEMPLARIS

Forced to buy the PS5 version because the performance was so terrible on a 3090 rtx, oh and they are no DLSS settings. No matter the resolution or lowered setting it still would stutter and be just non immersive/unplayable. This is unacceptable that i have to use my weaker console to play a game smoothly

Dishwater

It seems to be not only a short story, but a short amount of game play before your FPS hangs out in the 20-40’s. I had a lot of issues last night including having to redownload the game completely, now unplayable due to stuttering.

Scarumanga
Scarumanga

Performance is absolutely terrible on my system: 3060TI, 5700x, 32gb ram, Nvme. I am able to get 60fps and then performance tanks to under 15fps when any movement picks up... Its just all over the map, practically unplayable. That is with raytracing disabled. Enabling ray tracing just makes the game crash after a few minutes of play.
I really want to play this game, looked forward to it for years. But its unplayable. It would seem they only optimized it for PS5 by the looks of it and ignored PC. for now ill give it a 3/10 just cause of the performance and omission of DLSS. Im sure its a great game...but I won't know until I can actually play it. Its 2022...there is zero excuse to not have DLSS 2.0 in a game....even if they are an AMD partner...no excuse!

As a hardcore deadspace fan i had high hopes for this game, sadly with the addition of denuvo the game isn't running well, endless stutters and frame drops plague the game which is hindering my experience. At this time i can not recommend this game to anyone until the devs add some kind of patch that'll help dampen the current problems.

Very good there is stuttering as of right now but its day one so i know they will release a patch very soon to fix it other then that beautiful graphics and great design cant go wrong with this game if you loved dead space or if you want to hop into a horror game for the first time.

I have core i5 11th gen, rtx 3060 ti, 32 gb ram and use 1080p and "medium" setting with no ray tracing whatsoever, and it still manages to stutters.

Haven't played dead space and so the negative comments that this is just the same don't apply, it's a great game, very atmospheric and well handled, except for the frequent frame rate issues, even though my 3080 FTW3 is barely used. once this is fixed this will be an excellent game. the quality of lighting and scene complexity set a new bar for others to follow.

This game has never seen any kind of optimization. It stutters like hell and has all kind of problems.
( I have an extremely impressive gaming rig )

Not to mention that the so called big horror game is as lame as a morning cartoon.
Unless you are a child not a single moment in the first 2 hours will make you even slightly scared or give you an unpleasant feeling/dread like in Dead Space.

Good music, good death scenes, satisfying combat. The zombies have great design and sound like grindcore vocalists (I recognize a good pig squeal when I hear it)
Running RTX3060 on ultimate settings with ray tracing, and I have a playable experience. Sure, there are the occasional frame rate drops but it does not severely detract from gameplay.
