Not going to lie, The Coma isn't some kind of paradigm shift in the world of horror. If anything, it's a very okay game. The first 20-30 minutes or so were actually scary, but once I actually saw the monster chasing me it stopped. I mean, a hot teacher turning into a crazy knife-wielding murder doll? Granted, she undergoes some changes over the game, but she never reaches NOPE levels. So that's not very scary.

The world, or the school, is mostly what you'd expect. Classrooms, corridors, occasional office. It's very samey. It doesn't really compare to other horror games set in a school, such as Corpse Party - mainly because the rooms are for the most part whole and identical. No weird holes, walls or eldritch growths blocking your way. Again, this is something that changes later on, but for the most part the school is just that: a school.

Even the soundscape leaves much to be desired. No freaky ambient, no random noises from hell to freak you out... even the monster's signature shriek is just a toned down woman's scream. It's less of a "OH CRAP! SHE'S HERE!" and more of a "sigh, back to the hidey hole" kind of feeling. Doesn't even work as a jumpscare.

With all that said, there's still enough interesting stuff here to actually have fun with this game. The notes scattered over the school are my particular favourite. They say what the students really think, deep down. There's anger, lust, boredom, fear. Human emotions. Seeing everything laid so bare for you to see is quite interesting. And there's a lore reason for them to be there, too - it just works. Those notes are your main reason to explore the school's many classrooms.

The general feel of how the game plays is also decent. While the killer might not be scary, running away and looking for a place to hide before your stamina meter depletes is pretty tense. You can't fight back - but you can dodge. So if you need to run past the killer, you have a way to do so. There are also items to help you on your way, such as healing snacks or drinks to restore your stamina - but since opening your bag doesn't pause the game, you'll rarely be able to use them when you need them.

As for the story? It's okay. Youngho is a little boring, and other characters aren't much better. There is a bit of a mystery going on, but it's not particularly good and it's easy to see through. Serviceable at best. The notes are where it's at.

I had some fun, but I'm having a hard time recommending this. It's too lukewarm for fans of horror, and too samey for people looking for a less intense experience. It falls into this no man's land where it pleases nobody. It's not a bad game, but it's not a great game, either. It's a very okay one.

Very good atmosphere, story and mechanics...however the the boss can be jerky at times. All in all prety good game 8/10

A very tentative no, the sequel to this improves the formula by far and there's no real requirement to play this game unless you really want a full grounding in the world/story. There's a lot of first game problems present in this title, The games wandering monster has some shonky spawning that means you can be forced back to the same hiding spot 3-4 times. The world isn't super interesting and character motivation is much worse in this title. That said it's still a fun experience so it really depends on your quality tolerance.

Playing this after the sequel, I can still consider this a very good game. Scared me many times, mechanics(except for holding breath which is op) are solid and the art is good(tho not as good as the sequel and some animations are lacking).

Not a fan of the minimalistic story tho, and I'm not the only one seeing as that was changed in Coma 2. This hurts the game as you can skip Coma 1 and play Coma 2 with no problems.

Rough around the edges, but good overall.

A horror game where you play a student who finds himself in a nightmare version of his school. It's an interesting idea, where you have to navigate the school and evade or hide from monsters, but found myself fighting the controls more than the monsters.

It's cool how the devs come back to this game every now and again and update it. The 2D art style is cool and it has a nice blend of Korean horror with survival-adventure. After what seemed like falling asleep through the test, you're trapped in a dark and twisted version of the school. Who are friends and who are foes? Traverse and search throughout the various school buildings to discover the mysteries of the pendent you found on your way to school. It's a run and hide style of game play that doesn't have any fighting mechanics and there are plenty of collectables within the game too.

My Review about the Coma Recut, I really think this game doesn't get enough love or attention it deserves I got this game originally for my Xbox One and have been a fan ever sense! The game is really nicely done, the story is nice, where the notes left behind the school tells you what's happening around the school, The game also doesn't hold your hand everywhere once you get to a certain point it's up to you to remember where it is you need to go or do! Space is limited you have to make the choice what to take with you, the music and sound design is fantastic, finally the killer is both smart and scary at least for me! Their were times when she outsmarted me, or worse found me while I was hiding out in a room in the dark. Overall everything about this game is what I wish most horror games could do this day and age, the game is a sold 9/10 ((Also found this game from a youtube video of upcoming horror games plus I didn't even know they published a second one! PS to the devs I know it's probably hard but please maybe do better advertisement I love the coma and am going to now start the 2nd one!! And I'm 100% sure others would too if they know about the game!))

Get's really tedious, really a short game but you'll be spending most of it just running.

It's okay. Running around the school gets extremely tedious once you get to the third building. With health effects and the crazy layout.. Good grief. I didn't really feel like it was all worth it. I still have the second game to play through, so hopefully it's improved.

It's a pretty neat little game yet, but it's not scary, just stressful which tends to be what "hide from killer" games just end up being. I bought it because it looked scary, then it just ended up being frustrating. I guess stress can be scary?

I was gifted the sequel to The Coma:Recut, Vicious Sisters, and it looked interesting enough to buy the first. It's very good! Your character has been trapped in a shadowy middle-world where evil spirits are attempting to fully break through to our world, and you navigate a darkened and creepy multi-level school building, searching for an exit while solving the mystery of how this came about, gathering many notes of lore and clues along the way, and trying to save your own spirit from being corrupted.

The tension and atmosphere are well-done, and the level design and plot very well-integrated with each other; e.g., you find a note that the music teacher might have a keycode, which involves locating her office and traversing the building complex to it. Doing this while avoiding a murderous spirit who tends to pop up unexpectedly becomes increasingly challenging, and I was always listening closely to hear her footsteps & growling!

There are sidequests as well, mainly involving saving your character's soul by investigating inexplicably poor grades, which will impact what ending you get, and i think multiple play-throughs are needed to get all achievements. My only complaints are a perhaps overly-aggressive enemy A.I. later in the game, along with a confusing maze-like tendency to navigating the final level, and I had to consult a walkthrough for the concluding section.

The Coma: Recut has genuinely unsettling Korean horror elements, well-written plot, and satisfying exploration in a creepy atmosphere. I felt a definite similarity in lore to the magnificent recent Korean horror movie The Wailing, with its evil spirits corrupting and co-opting the living. A big thumbsup and I'm looking forward to playing The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters!

Just a shitty flash game.

Textboxes glitch out and keep you stuck so you get killed

Zero thought, cliché story. "Fell asleep in class and now it's all spooky".

Being a 2d game, any "chases" are boring and pathetic. Run right for a few seconds, then hide in a closet. Cool. 2 key presses.

Game looks super cool, but it really isn't.

It doesn't even have voice acting... Lazy and embarrassing.

A very good indie horror game! The gameplay was fun but mundane at some parts too. The story was confusing but the more you played the more you understood. I got the "bad" ending but there is a true ending that can be obtained. But the end of the true ending seems to leave off from the bad ending, idk. Will be getting the second game also...

It's a good survival horror side-scroller with VN elements and stunning 2D art.
The story intrigues you enough to see it through to the end. The goofy nerd Youngho, the enigmatic Yaesol, the characters are designed in a way that your curiosity about their quirks and background increases with every interaction.

There are several small nitpicks that I had while playing the Coma, but they did not affect my enjoyment of the game.

The controls are quite awkward and non-intuitive if you play with KB:

    • the Q key closes the active UI element on the screen (unless it's a choice) but ESC does not, so the first hour of the game I kept pressing ESC instead of Q.
    • the same confusion goes to the E key and the ENTER key for selecting/using items.
    • the left SHIFT key works with W, A, S, D keys, but the right SHIFT key does not with the arrow keys, which is strange since the arrow keys work as intended.

Some of you might say: "This game is designed to be played by one hand", but let me tell you that it's quite difficult to reach V, B, N, M service keys with the left hand if you play without the lights on and rely on touch typing mechanics.
The previous statement leads to the obvious question: "So why didn't you play it with a gamepad?". I tried. I have a Nintendo Switch Pro controller that works pretty well with Steam, but unfortunately is not natively supported by the PC version of the game, despite the fact that this game is on Nintendo eStore and can be played on Switch.

The gameplay has its own oversights:

    • Youngho can't do two things simultaneously. I.e. you can either turn on/off your flashlight or move. In a fast-paced game like Coma, it's not a good feature. I wonder what will happen if Youngho will be walking and chewing gum: would he fall or choke on it? :)
    • There are no hotkeys for inventory items. The lack of this feature makes some items (i.e. bottles of water which are meant to quickly restore your stamina) useless. To use an item you have to open your bag (the B key), locate an item (might be more than one keypress), use it (the E key), and close your bag (the Q key) - then you can resume running. I think it would be better to show the contents of your backpack (6 cells) on the bottom of the screen instead of service icons, which are not even showing keybinds for them.
    • There is no quick use feature. You have to put an item in your bag in order to use it. And if you have a full backpack you've got a problem since you have to decide which item to discard irrevocably.
    • There is no indication that the killer sees you right now. Since it's a 2D game, you can't tell if the killer is in the room with you or if you temporarily managed to escape and you have the opportunity to hide.
    • Sometimes the killer spawns right on top of you when you enter the room. This becomes an issue near the end of the game because the killer gets very strong (can kill you in two hits in quick succession).

Nonetheless, it's a cool indie game and I recommend you to try it!

This Korean take on the haunted school trope was consistently entertaining and occasionally terrifying! Gameplay is simple and easy to pick up but be prepared to do a LOT of backtracking as objectives can be very spread out. The art and music was pretty good. The story, while intriguing, was a little bare-bones. The scares, mostly derived from a killer hunting you, had me at the edge of my seats in the beginning but it became pretty easy to manage once I realized just how effective turning off your flashlight and holding your breath was. While the game is nowhere near as scary as Corpse Party (another game about a haunted school), it's very commendable that the devs upgraded the experience and are still polishing it as of January 2021. I'm definitely looking forward to playing the sequel and I have high hopes for Devespresso Games' future titles.

i dont know why this game scares me so much but oohhhhh my god it does. like im always listening out so closely and still freak out. anyway the art style is super cool, the plot is compelling and the dialogue is funny. i find the characters interesting and i love the premise! the mechanics are good and not too hard to understand, i played on switch first then moved onto PC so it took me a little getting used to with the transition. However I think there are so many fun elements in this game that really make it engaging and cool to play.

Roffless

Decent game with quite likeable characters and an interesting enough story.

The basic gameplay is okay for the type of game it is, but unfortunately it can get downright tedious at times. The stalker mechanic and environmental dangers aren't exactly well implemented, so they become more of a nuisance rather than effectively scaring you.

The puzzles are alright and while obviously not Resident Evil caliber, they get the job done.

The map isn't too confusing to navigate, and later on they shake things up in how you access certain floors and rooms.

Overall I'd give this game a 7/10 and I recommend a playthrough if you can get it on sale.

this game is pretty short but legitimately terrifying , its atmosphere and music just hits the spot , the art style is fantastic , even though there is no voice acting but the game successfully keeps you engaged in it.

be sure to check my guide for the true ending if you want to achieve it , otherwise the ending everyone would normally get is the bad ending.

If you're looking for horror, I don't recommend this game, it's not scary and while the atmospeher would be nice, it's crippled by the lack of any kind of stakes.

-There are way too many save points.
-You get way too many resources for healing.
-You have way too much stamina for running, because of that it's no challenge to dodge around and outrun the enemy until you find a hiding place or safe room.

On the store page it says the game was rebalanced, which idk how to feel about. On one hand, the game is way too easy in it's current form and the enemies barely pose a threat, but on the other hand, the game already struggles with repetitiveness and too much backtracking, if I'd've died and actually needed to redo parts of the game... I probably wouldn't have finished it.

Tho if you're not interested in the horror elements or think the above mentiond points wouldn't lessen your enjoyment, then be my guest, the visuals, music and sounds are good and come together nicely to make an atmosphere, and while the gameplay is repetitive the game is short enough that it still holds up. While I'dn't recommend for full price, for the ~3$ that I got it, sure.

The story and idea of this game are very nice, and the controlling system is easier after playing the game a bit.

However, the very same thing that is so nice about the game is what makes it boring after a while. The chases are mostly always the same, and the enemy is always at the important locations that are your current objectives.
Also, it is a bit overwhelming the fact that the map doesn't show locations you have already been to, such as the dead ends and doors that cannot be opened.

But overall I find it a cool game.

Very nice 2D atmospheric horror game. Graphics and environments are nicely drawn a little rough at the edges but art style is well placed for the horror game. Music and sounds are basic and quite good. Story and atmosphere are very good. Especialy combined with The Coma 2. Gameplay and mechanics are good too, not too hard, not too easy. Especialy the last parts are really hard. If you love survival horror games and dont mind 2D. this is probably game for you. So what are you waiting for?! My graphic card stopped working and I was wondering what to play while I was searching for a solution. And... that's how I got here :D

I don't have a lot to say, because I didn't play too much of this game, but I can say this :

    • This game is pretty. I like a lot the graphical style.
    • It seems a little boring. I like the atmosphere, but there is no depth to the gameplay. You have to hide and stay quiet when that weird girl comes out with a knife.
    • The assets seem to be locked for a standard screen format. I have a wide screen and the visual is a little messed up. This is a shame, because it really breaks the immersion.

With that said, I fixed my graphic card and I am not down to finish this clunky game.

I can't finish the game, the only way was to redo everything. I was in the last section right before the ending, had to through this door but it's locked. Then I found out in order to unlock it I had to do this small hidden side mission, but I couldn't because I gave away the key to complete this other mission, and I was overwriting on a single save from the start. And the funny thing is when I first got that key the game didn't tell me I had to do both of the missions, the main one and the hidden one. The thing that made me not recommending this game is because of the reason above. I feel like in the last section for the players that might've forgotten that early hidden mission, we should have another way of unlocking it during the end. Otherwise, this thing is STUCK FOREVER. For players that don't have tons of patience this is the game to avoid.

The Coma is a 2D horror game clearly inspired by Silent Hill, but with a Korean anime flavor which adds a lot of charm through the main character's animation and the high school setting. You will spend the entire 3-4 hour game exploring an alternate dimension in your high school while being hunted by a creepy version of your teacher. There's no enemy variety and you are only able to run, dodge roll, or hide in cupboards. The thin gameplay is made up for by the overall aesthetic of the game, and the music is creepy with cool lo-fi vibes.

The biggest downside is the last hour of the game, which I felt was very unbalanced. Generally in a horror game you don't want to make the player die so much that they get frustrated rather than scared. I also would have liked there to be a bit more story, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the sequel.

I'll be honest it is scary at first but personally at least for me once I get used to it it's pretty easy to beat, the true ending is a weird combo but needless to say the story and overall game is easy and fun to play once you get the hang of it, it's not super difficult, maybe only when you're figuring out the controls but after roughly 30 mins - 1 hour it's relatively fluid.

It did spook me a few times. I'd recommend it for people who normally struggle with horror games (I'm such a scaredy cat) it gives a nice balance between jumpscares and gameplay without making you panic and rage quit (the chasing segments aren't unbearable they do give you a slight delay to find a place and you can still dodge so it's not hopeless in a dead end)

Successfully finished this game in one sitting.

H34rtsInDespair
H34rtsInDespair

Poor gameplay, unintuitive UI, and unresponsive controls makes this game very frustrating to go through. I couldn't even complete my first run because I got stuck on the last segment of the game. There wasn't any way to progress even after I exhausted every avenue I could access. I just kept dying over and over again without knowing what I was missing, if anything. Oh, also, the killer sometimes teleports. It's not frequent, but when it does happen, it's awful.

Spoiler free

It's short, it's sweet, and it's mostly a setup to what appears to be a much better second game (The Coma 2).

The Good
+ Art visuals are nice
+ It feels linear, but it isn't
+ Notes give a nice backdrop to the story, and they're quick reads
+ Some nice atmosphere
+ Music is nice

The Neutral
+/- Story is interesting, but is missing some things. I believe this is intentional since The Coma 2 is a thing.
+/- Running and hiding is a mix of gimmicky and heart racing if you haven't saved in awhile. Suddenly those useless water bottles become the most important item in the game.
+/- Game doesn't pause when reading notes

The Bad
- Dodge ability has a very weird frame hitbox
- Sometimes you'll enter an area and BOOM there is an enemy waiting to stab you and you're stunned in the load animation so they get a free hit. It might just kill you.
- A bit short. My playtime was actually around 5 hours and I did everything. Leave it to me to leave the game sitting in limbo for a couple hours while I cook Mac n Cheese and then eat it with some Fish Sticks from the oven. The food was delicious, but to my great surprise did I return to my PC after eating and the game was still going, but minimized. I'm gonna say worth it because Breaded Fish Sticks with Ketchup is about as amazing as Fries with Ketchup. But the food is not the issue here. And this "food talk" belongs in the "Good" category, as it was good. I digress. Game is a bit short.

Play it first if you plan on Playing The Coma 2.

Screamers made scary but for 5 seconds. Gameplay too shortly if you trying always running and not collect notes. Tired from *random* spawn monster when I trying escape from hideout.

It's all right. Bonus points for working on Linux via proton.

generally good but ending has a massive difficulty spike that winds up entailing simply dying repeatedly and memorizing the correct route to take. Throws out the already stale gameplay of creeping around managing stamina to spring when needed and hide.

Animation is pretty good tho.
Also some secrets to find and multiple endings. Story is decent and it rewards exploring and checking out the notes that are left around. Its unfortunate that its brought down by middling gameplay that gets frustrating for no reason.

Would've recommended if the ending section was handled better.

I'm torn on this one.

The first hours of the game were cool and it was plenty of fun to play.
I especially enjoyed the exploration aspect and the notes and items you could find here and there.
I really like the story and the underlying criticism of the South Korean school system.
The horror aspect however, falls a bit flat.

I mean, I could feel the tension in the first hours of the game but at some point, the chasing gets annoying. At some point, I only thought: "Ok lady, yeah, you are there but just let me get this note in quiet and peace". I found it especially frustrating, when you went into hiding and you wait and wait and wait but the killer is still there and so you'll have to hide again and wait again and urgh. PLEASE JUST LET ME EXPLORE.
What seriously send chills down my spine were some of the encounters with others because of the art
The sequence where you meet the "The Coma version" of Myung-gil? Awesome, there should have been more horror of this kind! Or when Ms. Song suddenly looks straight at you in the camera scene . There we have another good aspect: the atmosphere created by the music and art. They did a really good job with it and I liked it that you are able to hear the footsteps of Ms. Song so you can avoid her in the first place (at least in the first section it was like that).
End game was...especially tedious, unfortunately. So much so that I have zero desire to replay the game and reach the other endings (the conditions for getting some of these, esp. the true ending, are horrible IMO).

Because we still can't rate a game neutral on Steam and I think the game still doesn't deserve a thumbs down, I'll give it a thumbs up regardless. Get it on sale would be my advice if you really wanna play it but aren't scared by repetitive chase sequences like me.

Dev should add legend in map and marker for marking inaccessible path.
Also trap and jump scare were common, so stock you're up for recovery item.
Bad status such bleed and poison will be trouble for player, bring some antidote or bandage.

Just beat the game and it was a lot of fun. Definitely could use some more vending machines or items in the final part of the game but other than that I have no complaints. Excited to play the second one and I really love the set up made by this game.

Absolutely loved playing this game the artwork and story line were beautiful and full of plot twists. When playing this I thought I would honestly come to not like this since the controls where very much different to what I usually play with but I came to love the difference of it.

I played this before "The Coma 2: Vicious sisters" in both Nintendo Switch and Steam (PC). It is good stepping stone to playing the sequel. Not to mentioned that it has a good lore, though it is still missing some details in both series. It is possible that the developers intended to leave certain holes in the lore for future expansion. So I am quite interested in "The Coma" lore in the years to come. Do use headphones for better gaming experience and expect some level of anxiety when playing. Think it fulfills the purpose of the game and the devs did a good job on that aspect. Get the game during the sales, it's much more worth it then.

Though a little rough around the edges, It is quite a well-made and enjoyable game! Really liked the story.

I REALLY wanted to like this game. The story is interesting, the art is nice, and the music is good. However, the frequency of getting attacked by the killer towards the latter part of the game is insanely repetitive and tedious.

I was more annoyed than scared, as you have to keep running back and forth between rooms every minute to hide. Opening the map or reading does NOT count as pausing the game, so you can get killed just trying to heal or by getting stuck in dialogue finding an important item. Then you have to re-do what you just did...again. Then continue getting lost on the map or losing progress numerous times due to the contant running and hiding.

I'd maybe give it a shot if you really like these types of games, but I personally wouldn't re-play this. I will probably still try the sequel and see if the issues get improved upon though.

Having gone through the game, the chase sequences aren't scary, but just very annoying. And since this is the main game mechanic, I can't recommend this game.

Honestly the game started out amazing, but the chase sequences got so tedious that it quickly became boring and annoying...

I just finished the Coma: Recut. Gonna move on to Coma 2 in the coming days. I just wanted to put my thoughts out there and what I hope the 2nd game improves upon. While I did enjoy the game overall, there were definitely a good few segments where it was pretty frustrating and annoying to play. I guess I'll start with the positives. The concept was extremely interesting and enticing, plus it was executed pretty well. It had a story which you could either just get the base level of, or dive deep into with the various notes placed around the game world. I liked this a lot, and the notes were never, too lengthy. It has some basic, kind of forgettable, but solid cast of characters, and some really cool monster designs. The gameplay is what you'd expect, classic 2d side scroller horror. With plenty of areas to scavenge around in, traps and a monster to avoid. Dark Song could be really annoying and frustrating at times, camping in certain areas, and being able to kill you in like 2 hits. With barely any stamina, running away was not much of an option. There were fairly rare items that you could use the circumvent this. but you can't use items while your being chased, since it completely pauses your character to get an item, while Dark Song is still chasing you at full pace. It's the small things like this that can really make this game annoying to play. Hopefully the next game addresses some of these annoying bits. It's the little things that really brought this game down for me. I'd still recommend it though.

The game was pretty good, from evrery aspects you could probably think of. The art style is absolutely gorgeous. Not once I thought something looked odd because of the style. Everything moved smoothly : the environment, your character, the thing, it was beautiful

The story was really good. To understand it fully, explore the game completely, I won't say more because I don't want to spoil anyone. I do think that establishing our character more at the start of the game could have mad for a stronger ending, but it works just fine the way it is.

The only thing I didn't really enjoyed was that you had to stop moving completely to turn off or on your flashlight. It kinda breaks the rythm sometimes, or it leads you to your death. Also, the thing will sometime spawn in the4 same room as you, especially during chases regardless of its previous position (especially during a chase), I thought it was annoying but I still enjoyed it.

The game is a solid experience.

I really wanted to like this game...i know I've only played for roughly about 3 hours but this game is so tedious with random killer appearances every single minute and the killer WAITING outside where you are hiding. I did not purchase a computer version of most Dead by Daylight camp players. i purchased a game hoping it would be scary and fun to play, but the tedious constant chase sequences just drive me insane and gives me an instant headache...it's not scary it is literally the most annoying thing i have experienced in the wide variety of games i have. So until i can figure out a way to actually get anything done without having to hide for 30 minutes to an hour, I will not continue this game.
