This is one of my favorites games. McQueen and Dooley were just as amazing in this one, if not more amazing, as they were in the first game. The dialogue was funny, the characters were enjoyable, and the game play was great. If you haven't played these games what are you doing with your life??????

Overall, I'd really say I liked this game, but there were some parts that I really felt would be impossible to figure out for most people. They made it incredibly far fetched to figure out what some of the solutions are. You have to not take this game seriously at all. You have to remember that many of the solutions are silly. If all else fails, go for the trial and error route. Attempt to combine everything you have with everything in the world, and if that doesn't work, attempt to combine everything with each other. Funny jokes, references, and gameplay could use more practicality. I'd give it a 6.5/10.

Overall, this is one of the games that made me wish steam had a more neutral option for reviews.

That said, I definitely didn't enjoy this game as much as the first one. I'd suggest playing the original Darkside Detective if you have any interest. And honestly, frankly, skipping this one. I enjoyed it, but the puzzles in this game were a lot more of a pain in the ass than the original. In the first game, I wouldn't say I hit any major stumbling blocks in solving any of the cases. Most of the logic made sense, things were well foreshadowed in their use, and the layout of puzzles did a good job making sure you didn't have to backtrack too much.

This game definitely is a step down in puzzle design. Several steps down in my eyes, honestly. There were multiple points in this game where I ended up completely stuck with no idea how to progress. Multiple times where I felt like I was pixel hunting for something that wasn't properly signposted, or a lack of context clues left me with zero idea how to proceed. I had to look up guides at points for over half the mainline cases. I don't like referring to guides if I can avoid it, I'd much rather solve puzzles in games from, well, within the game. Generally when I'm looking at a guide it's because I feel the game has failed in guiding me or signposting what it expects from me. For that reason, I can't really say this succeeds as a sequel to the original, which I never ran into that issue with.

As for the actual story in the cases, it was nice. Good follow up to the original darkside detective. Good continued building of the setting. Jokes still quite amusing, and the tone of the game bang on to the original, props for all that.

All that said, be warned the puzzles in this game are a step down from the first if you are going to get it.

Reviewing even though at current only 8 of 6 cases (2 bonus) are available:

Fantastic sequel to The Darkside Detective, which I highly recommend playing if you haven't already, as there are a lot of references to it in A Fumble in the Dark. Much of the same humour from the first game is reflected in this installment, although I did get stuck in a few places where, for instance, it wasn't clear there were additional exits in a room. Most of the puzzles are definitely fair, or at least fair in the sense that ok, yes, it's moon logic, but it's also moon logic repeatedly spelled out by the characters if you talk to them again. (Cute referencing both This is Spinal Tap and Stranger Things in the same line of dialogue!) There's also a fun time-travel section, which is a rare thing to do well, and something I'd like to see more games try in the future! (pun not intended)

It's like the first one, but with more budget meaning more frames, humours, puzzles, and weird cases to solve, as well as some returning characters, still no voice acting though, so 9/10.

Man this game is a riot. The writing is on a very well done humor-y banter level basically all the time. The riddles range from straightforward to borderline logical to moon logic. But there are also some deductive minigame-like parts I really enjoyed ("logic trainer"-style). Music is awesome (and on Spotify btw). You might take more out of the jokes if you played the previous Darkside game...which I havent but I can see that there are countless references to it. Must-buy adventure game.

This game earned a spot on my list of "very favourite" point and click games. the story is quirky and interesting; the puzzles aren't too hard, but also not too easy, and the mini-games are fun and unique. Worth every penny folks. 100/10 recommend.

A hilarious, fun and engaging experience. Although it lacks in animation it doesn't detract from the experience and artistic direction. The puzzles are just the right level of difficulty for such a game. Definitely one of the best pixel-art adventures out there.

A great sequel to an excellent first game, was pleasantly surprised to see longer cases in this game. Who doesn't want to see more of Dooley and the detective (partner goals). I would've liked to see more of the darkside and occult cases like the first game, that's the only thing I was missing. Hope to see a third game in the future!

Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark is a great sequel, with cases that are much longer, for better or worse, some amazing pixel art with glorious colours and much funnier than the first game. While DSD felt like a small project, this one feels like a proper game, with proper puzzles and somewhat of a story. The soundtrack is as great as ever, really building the atmosphere in each case.

The cases being longer can have their bad sides, since I feel like a couple tend to drag for too long and, especially in the first case, it throws way too much stuff at the player that requires the player to keep a mental reminder of way too many objects at once. For example, the make-up item, you can interact with it but it has no special dialogue to hint that it may be used later and you can't pick it up, but later when you need it, it is most likely long forgotten by the player.

Washcloth

Nice adventure game with olden' day point and click style humor (that does not try overly hard) and puzzles that are not overly cryptic.

The Darkside Detective returns! In a whole new series of cases, which I found to be just as fun, if not more, than the first!
((If you haven't played the original, go check that out first, then come back!))
After leaving off at the end of last game on a cliffhanger...
Dooley's in the Darkside!
The game picks right back up, launching into its story.

This game follows the same format as the first, so if you liked that one, rest assured you'll probably enjoy this one too!

I found the best parts of this game at all times to be the self-aware humor, always with a little nod to the ridiculousness that is going on, but never losing sight of telling an entertaining story.

If you like weird, supernatural, and funny games, and if you like the point-and-click style, I think you'll really enjoy this game.

For me, I'd say better than the original by far, and I'd be excited to play more episodes, or even a third iteration! This is definitely my favorite series of point and click adventures, and definitely one of my top recommendations to my friends!

Roman

This game was a lot of fun, like the first. Several interesting mysteries to solve. There aren't multiple ways to solve a case/puzzle and there are no different outcomes. It's pretty linear in that regard. However, the point-and-click style doesn't get old in this game. The dialogue is pretty funny and hints are adequate, but not too revealing. Game and case storylines intermingle with the previous game.

Took me about 13 hours to complete the game and bonus cases, including 100% achievements. A bit short, really, but totally worth it when it's on sale.

Brilliant sequel to the first, and just as funny. I'd suggest playing the first game if you haven't yet, but it's not strictly necessary.

Pros:
- The music was done well
- Good artwork
- None of the mini-game style puzzles were overly difficult
- Lots of funny moments

Cons:
- There's definitely an element of try using random stuff until something sticks. Thankfully it's usually fairly logical in hindsight, so it's not as bad as a lot of point & click games.
- No hint system for if you get stuck, so don't be surprised if you need to consult a walkthrough to get past certain parts

Verdict: 9/10

Fun game series, with the oerfect amount of comic relief.
The right amount of challenge per casual game play.
I had AFITD in my wishlist before the first game. but bought them as a bundle and played n order (recommended). The first one I couldn't stop from the moment I started until the moment i 100% it. The second one, I found myself taking a small hiatus from (no particular reason) and then just opened it back up last night and ended up staying up most of the night to complete it. So, with that being said, it is a bit slower than the first, but it does pick up, and all is worth the entire playthrough. great game series. I want to think that the ending of AFITD leaves speculation that there is going to be a 3rd??
oh, please?

First game was somewhat fun, but this sequel is truly remarkable in many aspects.
It was like playing an old-school point'n click adventures such as Monkey Island, Sam'n Max or Day of the Tentacle.
Puns are funny and there are many references to popular culture. Dooley is funnier in this game.
I truly enjoyed every case (except bonus cases) and puzzles were somewhat challenging.
It took 12 hours for me to beat it. I recommend the game to every veteran adventure lovers and to beginners to genre.
I feel pumped for the next sequel.

If you've played the original Darkside Detective, and you liked it, you're going to enjoy this as well. I do have to admit, it's not as fun as the original, only because the puzzles aren't as difficult. Other than the puzzles being easier, everything else about AFITD is better than the original: Soundtrack is great, dialogue is spot on, puzzle depth is top notch, and the DLC's are excellent. Ghosts of Christmas Passed is by far my favorite puzzle. If you like satire like Twin Peaks, and puzzles that are difficult, but not Elden Ring difficult, you'll enjoy this game. Also, click on everything, a lot of time went into all of these eastereggs, take the time to enjoy them.

The devs have taken every good element from the first game and made them even better this time around!

It is still your straight forward point and click with fairly straight forward puzzles, but most of the cases are longer this time around.

This game expanded on a lot of backstory for our quirky cast, this was really nice to see! It still doesn't take itself to seriously.

At the time of writing this, there is still one case yet to be added. I don't have anything else to say about this one that I didn't say on the first. Buy the game, support the devs, you will not be disappointed.

The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark is the second installment of the point'n'click series.

PROS:
I will keep this brief. Only the pixel art is slightly better than the first game.

CONS:
- Out of place annoying soundtrack with bad composition
- Too many nonsensical trial'n'error object puzzles.
- Too much backtracking, last episode was a chore to play.
- Less precision on humor. Jokes become flat, too familiar and too forced. Gameworld lost its charm, it was more like a reference-based cutesy miniature world, now it went and tried to became his own-self and destroyed everything it built so nicely earlier.
- Plot is crazier than first game but with less charm, it almost become a total flop with empty characters saying nothing real except all mimicking the same tired humor, wanting nothing real only forcing the plot, doing nothing real that stay in one minds even on a below the average story.

FINAL:
3/10 Unlike the first game, it felt like a chore to finish the game. Had no fun from start to finish. Half the episodes were trash. Again we saw 'bigger doesnt mean better necessarily'. Maybe any 3rd installment catches the charm of the first game who knows.

Better, longer and harder version than the original

The first game was pretty good and this one is pretty much the same with longer and more complicated cases.
If you liked the original one, you will definitely enjoy this one. It's more expensive but definitely worth the price for the more complex cases.

All the stories are well done and I personally think the humor got much better in this one as there were much less cringe moments like in the first one. Dialogues were better while the plots are still fun and interesting.

The cases are much bigger than in the first game and span many screens and locations unlike the first game which contained some very short cases. This makes the puzzles a bit more complicated but you are never truly lost and can always go the good old way of clicking everything, combining everything. I felt overwhelmed in one or two cases but the others were pretty linear in which you unlock additional locations while you advance the story.

There is a little less Darkside theme going around but all the stories are great and well-written, maybe even better than the first one especially since I felt the dialogues were a tad more mature and less childish slapstick humor, at least one main character doesn't feel completely brain dead/opposite of sanity.

This is a must buy if you loved the first game. It's a good buy (especially on sale) if you liked or enjoyed the first one.
Otherwise I would advise people to buy the first game which is much cheaper to get a taste of the story/characters/difficulty.

Roman Adler

Part one was a lot better than this. They've introduced boredom and unfairness to this nice game.
Everything you click on generates countless lines of super boring and annoying text, you dont want to click on anything anymore because you fear you will be penalized with endless blah blah you have to click through. Horrible.

The locations are totally blown up with countless uninspired rooms and corridors, it's super boring.

Every character you meet overstays his welcome with neverending boring text. Its insane and surprising that the same people who made the super nice first season thought these dialoges/monologes can be entertaining.

Besides the boredom they've added unfair puzzles, you will understand what I mean when you start to use a walkthrough and still dont understand what you're doing.

The stories are bigger than the ones from part 1, but they are a lot worse than the original ones. They dont have this nice mystery vibe from season one, they are just stupid and boring.

Get the first season, its really great, but ignore this one, its just an annoying waste of time.

If you played the first one of these Darkside Detective, you know what you are walking into. It is a really well done point and click 8-bit adventure. I bought it on sale for $9. If you liked the original (on sale $4), you will enjoy this too. It has more interesting settings, and still has all of the funny pop culture references. There's part of me that thinks this one tries to hard to be funny at times, but it's still the same enjoyable characters, graphics, music, ect. Apart from the same winning dry humor of the original(s), Fumble in the Dark now has 200% more fourth-wall-breaking, and a degree more charm that I don't quite remember being there before: There's still plenty of back-and-forth banter between the duo, but now a sort of budding caramedrie that we get to see as McQueen trusts Dooley with his life at several points, and lets him put the finishing touches on several cases (even where it inevitably goes wrong), and Dooley for his part is more generally helpful and friendly, but retains his classic dunderheadedness that gets them into all sorts of misadventures, but naturally in part also due to McQueen's own nerdy, relatable antics.

For those new to the series, Darkside Detective is just as advertised, a witty puzzle adventure with not-so-straightforward, ofttimes unearthly solutions to mundane problems, but everything coming together in the end for a satisfying playsession each episode. Certainly worth the price for the playtime you get out of each individual episode (currently there are 8, with a 9th seemingly in the works), plus replayablity in finding all the secrets in each, and who can say no to a weird, winding story with returning references & characters.
