Amazing game.

Advantages:
- graphics and optimisation
- wide tree of skills, a large variety of the set equipment, tonnes of epic loot, etc.
- magnetic soundtrack, for example "The Hero and the Ghost Lady".
- comparing to the first game, it`s got the solid endgame content: 60 lvl maximum, therefore more perks and skill points that open the door to superior builds, customisations, etc.
- campaign`s become easier than in the first game, though there are the endgame modes that turn the game into nightmare if you wish.

Disadvantages:
- story is still mediocre, the twist that you get literally from the first minutes of the playthrough.

Bugged and unplayable once I got to the secret area. Game continuously locks up with weapon info panel, have to tab out of the game to close it.

Pretty awesome game, not as good as the first but you can import your character and continue the journey, and the gameplay is basically the same. So if you liked the first game and want more, then this is the game for you....

...unless you are playing in co-op mode. In that case, you will probably find that your quests won't always complete (so you end up stuck in quest limbo and effectively lose the character), or you'll find that your equipment has suddenly been over-written by the host player's equipment. 15 hours spent bricking 2 characters is not my idea of fun.

Game has lost steam launch capabilities with Windows 10.

Noted debugging on https://steamcommunity.com/app/215530/discussions/1/620713633845107858/…
Game has to be launched externally not through steam to work.

I really enjoyed playing Part 2 of the Van Helsing Trilogy.

Pros:
+ well-proven combat system
+ many, many easter eggs
+ more tower-defense elements
+ continues the story of part one
+ get and train your own pet ("chimera")
+ can import your character from part 1

Cons:
- rather short (needs approx. 15 - 20 hrs to finish)
- "chimera" is too weak + hunting system is weird

Game buggy..crashes often..does not save progress...

Love the graphics and the story line though...

If you are looking for a sequel that's better than the original this game isn't for you. I played the first one and had a blast but the sequel has some major flaws.

1. At least 80% of the chests and breakable are empty.
2. I'm level 10 and getting drops for a level 38 character (really???)!!!!
3. This game has monster generators which can result in some nasty zerging making it almost impossible to move and down the monster generators.

Overall it plays a lot like the original but it just doesn't live up to the first one's fun level.

Standard ARPG with some humor elements attached to it. Plot continues from previous game and leads to something that will continue in the next. Combat system is satisfying and rewarding. Not overly complicated, but it does branch enough with variety that it will make you try and plan out your build as you go. Graphics are surprising pretty good for an ARPG, I would contend it is up there with the best of them.

My only complaint is sometimes finding information regarding quests or other items in the game as there isn't much found for guides and such on the internet.

Considering all I would still call the game a good gem, especially if you find it on sale. Would recommend if you're an ARPG player; a solid 8/10.

This is a sequel to the first van helsing game, it gets really interesting along with some interesting choices the player has to make down the road. Each choice the player makes, embarks a new journey. Different compared to the first Van Helsing Game. I would recommend this if you really enjoy the Van Helsing Characters/Lore or pretty much anything Van Helsing related.

Ropey

Not really fun, I get whats its trying to do but it is an extremely convoluted skill system with few that seem worthwhile to use and with little depth to combos or the like.

Fantastic game! This is my favorite of the original 3 games. I hated the beginning at first, but came back to it determined to learn it better, and once that was done, the game is now my favorite part of the trilogy. It also has my favorite end-game content out of all the Van Helsing games.

NOTE: There are some known bugs (such as the game not saving progress) that are mostly due to two things:

1) If something in your inventory or stash gets duplicated by the game (it will be an exact duplicate), make sure to sell it right away. DO NOT KEEP both copies of the same item. Game files will get corrupted if you keep both.

2) Stuffing your stash too full. Luckily, on this iteration of the game, you can still make a bunch of storage characters. So, if you really want to keep some things, put them on storage characters and leave a bunch of empty space in your stash.

2nd NOTE: If you buy all 3 of the original Van Helsing games, you can get the Final Cut version for free. Final Cut is the storyline of the first 3 games combined into one game, allowing a player to play the entire story with the same character. We can import characters from VH1 into VH2, but we cannot import any characters into VH3. Final cut has 6 classes instead of just the 3 that are in VH1 and VH2. Final Cut only gives you 6 character slots for online play, and 6 character slots for offline play. The skill tree in Final Cut is laid out differently, and a number of the skills have been changed. I personally like the Final Cut skill tree better. Final Cut is balanced more smoothly. VH1 and VH2 are more challenging because of the rougher balancing.

Good game. It is the second instalment of the series. Better story and this time it leads into the next story VH3 that is. Do not expect the most amazing game ever, but is it is worth playing.

I really enjoyed the first game, loved the story and comedy bits. The second game feels like a rehash of the first, story is completely lacking and dialogue is not engaging, doesn't pull you in at all, you feel nothing for the characters. It's just feels like a cash grab.

I played the first game and enjoyed it. I saw the reviews for this one (the sequel) and thought "why not?" After 20 or so hours, I just couldn't stick with it. The core battle was annoying and the call backs to the lair to 'help' with a defence or whatever reminded me of the cousin in GTA IV. My gaming time is precious - too precious to continue along with that sort of nonsense.

Amazing game with plenty of replay-ability. going for achievements but sadly not enough multiplayers to complete all of them. there are plenty of funny and amusing moments and choke loaded with ester eggs. even the hardcore is not that tough on normal difficulty. the game of course gets insane on higher difficulties. just my experience :P have fun.

Despite the bizarre play time listed above, I have beat this game three times - I'm not sure where they came up with this total.

This is the best game of the trilogy, your companion is upgraded, the mechanics are upgraded, and the story is just as interesting as the first.

The third game is the worst, do not buy it or the collection - it ruins the game balance and turns the dynamic build system into a boring class system that prevents you from playing a good hybrid build.

This, and the first game, are some of the best arpgs I've played - they are solid competitors with the Diablo series, with fun characters and entertaining side stories.

Highly recommended.

Here we go again.

Imported my character from the first game (ridiculously easy and cool feature) and carried on where I left off. The moment I get the battle in the first chapter I knew this would be a better version of the first game. I think I died.... 30ish? times during the battle. There are so many enemies and things happening that I was just ran over constantly. Upon getting through that, you're tossed into the actual game. There's the tower defense aspect (which is entirely avoidable through the commanders), the Ink stuff (which I enjoy because of the enemy diversity), and the story (which I think is decent). The new class skills are pretty solid and allow quite a bit of diversification. Katarina is still great. The pop culture references are still enjoyable. I legit felt like a demi-god at the end because of how much destruction I was bringing upon the enemies that handled me in the beginning. It's just a solid game

TLDR: Enjoy the first game? You'll find more of the same but better in this one. Didn't play the first one? You should still give this a go

Bought this game (in sale) because I liked previous one, not really thinking about it. After seeing the mixed reviews, I got bit startled but could it be that bad deal for like 2 euros? I don´t think so. But for regular price, well, would thing twice before buying it.
Gameplay is bit clunky but you will get used to it, had some annoying pathing issues. UI is okay-ish, skill tree and other abilities might be chaotic at first still you can get some cool combos if you take the time to read everything. So far? Not a bad game! But then comes nails to its coffin...
Let´s start with the lesser evil, story. It feels bit forced at times and if you played the first game (and cared a bit about what was going on then), then the sequel´s story is kinda a middle finger in your face. After that comes questing, long story short, side quests = at the start of the game, usually annoying but as the game goes on it gets better... sometimes. Main quests = general, from time to time some feel as if they were made "this way" just to make the play time longer. Freedom of choice = illusion (?) definitely found quests that had several dialogue choices that always led to one outcome ("Let´s try diplomacy this time! Everything is going fine and suddenly Van Helsing switches and wants to kill everyone"). And at last, my biggest headache in this game, easter eggs. I´m fan of these things, love to see them in games and everything but everything has its limits... At one point in the game I had four of them on my screen and Van Helsing with Katarina where just talking about another one. After few hours of gameplay I think I gained severe brain damage from them...
In the end, it´s okay I guess but if you want a better RPG always go for the first game.

Edit: after I finished this game, moved onto the third one and then tried again first one. I must say I was unnecessarily harsh when I wrote it before (even though I am still annoyed by the amount of easter eggs). This game could use bit more love, it is broken in some places - well, in a lot of them, balancing for example is "not the best". Nonetheless when you will be able to get it in sale, it is worth your time and money.

I`ve never seen such a let down from a first instalment to the second
It`s like they kept the horrible chores on Van Helsing 1 (such as tower defense, who has no place in a ARPG) and kept it, while letting the good stuff go (such as LOOT. In this game you barely get coins from killing enemies).
Stay away from this one

If you play with imported lvl 30 character, you will have an enjoyable, although uninspiring hack-and-slash. But the game is not optimized for starting from scratch; there is an insane difficulty spike in midgame, where you're constantly underlevelled and battling high level mobs. Turns the game into a slog.

DogsAndCats
DogsAndCats

What an immensely fantastic sequel. If I had more time, then I'd consider playing the first one and this one even more for achievement hunting, experimenting with builds, importing them between games, and check out(the probably dead) multiplayer.

It is unfortunate that the 3rd game, from what I hear, changes a lot, and that importing characters to the 3rd game is not possible. Either way, I'm looking forward to playing the 3rd game, and eventually The Final Cut which is all 3 games put together in one grand adventure.

This is one of those games that really makes me wish steam had a “neutral” rating rather than just a “good/bad” system as there are quite a few good points to this game but also some major problems.

The game is definitely a sequel to The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing the ending of which very much has a “go and buy the sequel to continue the story” feel about it. Having played this that is definitely the case.

The original game has had some features bolted on to make Van Helsing 2 which do not, in my opinion add to the game and rather distract from it. They mostly require you to return to your lair every 10 minutes (or more frequently) to micro manage one thing or another. On the subject of Resistance Management the steam page actually says “As the leader of the Borgovian Resistance, you will participate in the micro management of the allied troops”. As anyone who has ever experienced a “micro manager” will know this is not a good thing!

PLUS

1: General graphics: Quite nice.
2: Sound: Good, makes good use of a surround sound system.
3: Cheap: (NOTE: I got it with a hefty discount during a sale.)
4: Comes with achievements, steam trading cards for those that like that sort of thing.

MINUS
1: Plot: Uninspired and Repetitive. Nearly all the plots are “Capture Location X”.
2: Very Weak End Game: Its simply kill lost of monsters. I've been doing that all game.
3: Unlike the previous game some of the Easter Eggs are rather intrusive and “in your face” and actually distract from the game for me.
4: Difficulty: The difficulty in this game is way off (see comments below).
5: Gameplay: Okay but uninspired. By the end it was getting very repetitive and this isn't a very long game.
6: Lack of Tutorial / Instructions: There are a few on screen pointers at the start but most of the game is left completely unexplained. There is no instruction manual packaged with the game at all.
7: Very Short: The whole game is only about 20 hours long and that is playing it as a completionist.
8: Poor character graphics: Apart from the weapons the character graphics have virtually no change depending on the items equipped which is disappointing.

This game has some serious difficulty issues. At times you just get surrounded by hordes and utterly annihilated, re-spawn and die almost instantly as the re-spawn is in the middle of the horde that just swamped you. This can result in several reloads in very quick successions trying to grind your way out of the horde. This is NOT FUN and healing has a harsh cooldown so that is no use in this situation either.

Conclusion: Not worth it at full price, mainly due to the length (or rather the lack there of) but worth picking up cheap in a sale.

I would like to state that my whole review will be extremely biased, offensive and discriminative against game types, publishers and developers so if you become easily offended please do not read this review.

Ok let me tell you why you may want to play this game. When I saw The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing (from now on TIAVH) on steam store for the first time, I thought just it is some type of Diablo clone. And as a classic Diablo and conservative person I don’t like clones. (Classic Diaclo fan: Loves Diablo 1, likes Diablo 2, plays the Diablo 3 just for the respect to the memory of Diablo and short Blizzard trailers)

I bought the first one during a sales week and wanted to just play to waste some time. It was the time that I decided to leave all my prejudice (Except unnecessary GamEs for ReAtarts company games that includes racing, FIFA, NBA and all other similar ztupid chit) behind for all games because this lucking thing is far more fun than Diablo 2 and 3.

- First of all hit has lots of humour, black humour and funny referencing of other games, movies, series in it. And they are all well placed.
- There are lots of conversations related or unrelated with the story and doesn’t give the “just keeping clicking and killing for hours” feeling like the Diablo 2 and 3.
- It never gets boring. I mean, I never played any game twice consequently from beginning to end and I never continued to play any game just to hunt achievements. But this one made me! (Not going to play the neverending mode though.)
- The story mode was fun but also the scenarios are attractive and challenging too.
- Both the game play and the environment are far more colourful than Diablo series.
- Skill trees, levelling through experience, reputation and glory plus their awards are far more detailed and colourful than Diablo’s system.
- I loved the idea of Fluffy.
- BlizzArt is more BlizzFart recently
- There are no games around with this kind of humour anymore.

There were few minor problems though,

- The enemies that can summon other enemies have no summoning limits and that can lead to a hardware insufficiency. Not mentioning the difficulty part…
- There must be some tutorial to teach how to use runes and essences.

Sum up: If you like Diablo style, you will definitely love TIAVH 1-2. But if you are a Diblo fanatic and can not tolerate any humour with your very serious holy quests… stay away. I haven’t played the 3rd one yet but I will soon and I trust the developer duuudes.

@Developers: One side of me does not want to play 3rd part as there will be no more Van Helsing after that one. And usually developer duuudes (or their bright ideas) disappear after good projects. Happened with Overlord (this thing with GamEs for ReAtarts is contagious, it passed to the Codemasters too and the company is drowning with Codefarter racing games.) Dungeon keeper (Hail to the soul of the Bullfrog), Black and White, Stanley Parable(I don’t know what happened to these guys)… Ok the last one was not suitable for the concept but we haven’t had a Stanley Parable sequel, prequel or anyquel… right? The Incredible Adventures of Fluffy…? Maybe?

@Developers: By the way, I laughed a lot. Thank you

Its alright it does have respawning things but atleast they usually are tied to some kind of destructible machine not just appearing out of thin air. A fitting sequel that isn't vastly superior to the previous game but does have some noticeable improvements throughout.

Storm Raider
Storm Raider

better than the first part.
more polished.
still has the beautiful small maps and pop culture references.
still swarms you with unbalanced hordes of enemies.

This time played a summoner class than a warrior, much more fun. Breezed through the story.
Now that I think about it, the DLC summoner and sorcerer classes for part 1 should be free for all as they are a staple in this trilogy now and the final cut has them all unlike us fools who bought all 3 games separately.
hmmm

It sucks - I give it 1/10 mostly because the item descriptions are unreadable.
The text is too small to read and the translations (I didn't play in english) have errors. Difficulty also should have been tweaked - I kept getting 2 shotted on normal mode, and still died a few times on easy.

I don't much appreciate the story either.

About the gameplay: you start at lvl 1 but you'll finish the game at about lvl 30.
The second tier of skills you see, starting from lvl 30+, are meant for the New Game+ called "Veteran", so you'll never get to see them unless you're planning on playing the game more than once.
I'm glad I paid a few cents for this.

Psylynx
Psylynx

The game has tons of potential to be a great arpg, but the camera angle and setup is atrocious.
I've played only a few hours of it and first, the angle is uncomfortable. You never feel like you can see enough, to click where you want to go or target what you want to target.
The biggest problem by far is that things can literally just be 100% in your way, and they can be clickable! Oh this elevator thing is right here blocking half your screen while a bunch of monsters are running at you. You can't see them because the elevator is in your way and you can't click that way because the elevator is clickable, cool.
Lastly the indicators of where you can and can't walk are horrid. It will have zero visible change and there is just invisible walls everywhere.
I really do want to like this game, but it's just not enjoyable. The base controls are about the same as D2, so that's okish.

Not As Good As The First

What I Liked

It was more of the same as far as graphics, style, and gameplay as the first Van Helsing.

What I Did Not Like

It lost its charm from the first game. I liked the story in the first game, which encouraged me to play it until the end.

Why I Stopped Playing

Since it didn't capture me as well as the first, I got bored and moved on. It doesn't mean it's bad. If you want something simpler than Diablo, then I would recommend this.

Disclaimer

I have been a gamer for over 30 years. I tend to play mostly PC games. I also bounce around between games A LOT. I may purchase a $60 game and play it for 2 hours or spend $10 on a game and spend 50 hours on it. Even if I played a game a short time, it does not mean it is bad. It just means another game caught my attention. I also complain about flaws in games a lot, even about the littlest of things. Keep that in mind when reading my reviews. If I do not have a complaint, then the game must be special!

Randy Lahey
Randy Lahey

Not a diablo killer but definitely a good game. Not all that much content and the campaign is linear so no 2nd play through choice differences. There is an extended "scenario mode" but by the time it unlocks, you'll be basically max level anyway so unless you feel like grinding for the best possible loot its worthless. Otherwise, its good and for $15 or less during a sale its worth it.

corbo
corbo

Only recommended at the 90% discount, because as amusing and good-looking as it is, it's a scammy, buggy piece of software.

The DLC scenarios are locked and inaccessible, not playable before a 3rd play-through or so. That dirty move is probably illegal in civilised countries, and turns us berserk in the other ones. Besides, half the loot and powers in the original game are already useless, requiring a level that you cannot reach in your first or unique play-through. Dumbissimo.

As for the bugs, the most annoying ones are:
- Getting stuck in the captains' GUI, forcing you to kill the process and restart. Better skip that part entirely.
- Getting stuck on the terrain, on invisible blades of grass or whatever. That shall be the main cause of your many deaths.

The main flaw, however, is the same as in the first installment: Tiny fonts.
It really doesn't help with the over-itemised loot, the many skills and spells and whatnot.

The gameplay itself is entertaining, with colorful maps, cool mobs and rad powers.
Just remember to reward unfinished products with incomplete payments.

Thanks
Thanks

If you're looking for a fun hack and slash/diablo style rpg.

look somewhere else.

After being out for so long there's still some game breaking bugs. The combat system is unbalanced. and the story is just flat out boring. Even when it does try to be funny, or cool. it just doesn't work.
They even made an angry birds reference which made me wanna shoot my computer with a shotgun.

Everything the first game offered with a lot more skill options, but much harder enemies!

Taking place directly after the first game, you embark on a new quest to defeat a new villan with the help of new (and old) allies.

The UI was given a face-lift but still works the same.
Loot is EXTREMELY rare, a lot of the times treasure chests are EMPTY!?

Co-op is the same four player campaign but really buggy and crashes a lot.

The game gets way too difficult from the Chimera mission on, like the enemies jump 5 levels above you somehow. Nearing the end though it starts to get back to normal. With the last mission being A LOT better than the first game.

I found out only after beating the game that you CAN import your VH1 character, would've been nice to know beforehand...
Also, why the F*CK do you get scrolls and armor that is for level 40+ when you reach about level 30-31 at the ENDGAME!?
The rune-crafting, trophy room, mostly POINTLESS for a new character since you have to make it through the entire game to be able to use it, and by then it's boring unless you enjoy playing the story over in Veteran mode.

Overall really fun but very hard and a little bit shorter story. If you enjoyed the first game you'll love this one.

8/10

"Multiplayer – You and your friends can test your skills against each other via the PVP mode (8 players) or join forces and complete the story in the co-operative campaign (4 players)."

That's a big lie, MP is broken and will work sporadically.
For a game fun like this is a shame that they can't, or don't want, to fix the huge amount of bugs and crashes.

For the few bucks from a sale i would say it's a fun game to play solo. It crashes less in offline...
This applies to the first game and this one.

I enjoyed the Van Helsing Trilogy very much. All parts of the series were without bugs or lags. The games have great graphics, interesting quests and included interesting minigames.
Part I was especially large compared to the others. It also felt less linear.
Part II was shorter, yet came with some new mechanics and skills, plus the possibility to import your character from Part I.
Part III was also shorter, but maps were very interesting and beautifully created. Unfortunately the character could not be imported with skills and equipment since new classes were introduced.
Overall I liked all three installments and can recommend all of them. I post this positive review for each of them, since I do not agree with the imho "underrated" mixed review average of II and III.

+ Good old diablo style ARPG.
+ Full of funny pop-culture references.
+ Good 7/10.
+ Arcane Mechanic OP.

The progression feels incomplete. No endgame. Fun for one playthrough but that's it. 0 replayability.

I'm gonna say, this is my favourite of the three; the skill trees are toilet paper long (which I like), waaay more expanded build possibilities than in the first instance, the banter between Van Helsing and Lady Katarina is way more lively and funny than in the first game, the plot is thicker, the tower defense mini-game is so much fun, there are tons upon tons of secrets and easter eggs to discover (you can really feel 2010s energy from this, and younger generation might not get all the references, but it's worth it!).

I didn't import my character from the first game (I didn't know you can), so I finished my first playthrough on level circa 30. Motivated by getting more high spells, and test my builds, I started playing the game on veteran; which is vast improvement considering first instance wasn't motivating enough to do so (aside from bragging rights). I really enjoy it, and the summary at the end of the chapters really made me look for more hidden secrets.

Definetly my favourite Van Helsing game.

0/10, Dracula is conspicuously absent from a game using characters from Bram Stoker's best known work. Also 8/10, best steampunk Diabolo Clone I've seen to date. The UI is kinda awful, and the default controls are really piss-poor. Overall, I'd give this a 6/10, and a warning that this isn't really worth buying full-price. Wait for a sale if you're looking for a decent Diabolo clone, or if you really like gothic literature. Otherwise, there's really not much here.

This game is cool if you'll buy it as pack (e.g. discount, VH I, II and III).
I had fun playing it but it's this kind of game you play without a big passion for the plot. It is very typical Hack and slash. Rather linear story. Game is rather short as VH I and III. I always try to do all quests. There's no entry level I think. If you played any RPG before you should make it, even on advanced difficulties.

I recommend it to people who are generally bored and would like to slay some monsters and do not have much time to play. You can come back to this game from time to time. I would rate it smth like 4/5.

It's for sure a step down from the first one. That one had me laughing in a few spots. This one on discount is worth playing if your expectations are reasonable.

Great game. Don't know why it doesn't get more media coverage?

It's got a bunch of typos and bugs, but the gameplay and easter eggs are worth it

Edit: It also has some of the best pathfinding I have ever seen in an ARPG; click a treasure chest on the other side of a chasm and your character will run the shortest way around the entire map to get to it.

I liked Van Helsing 1. Part 2 Released 2014 - still bugs inside. I quit the game because i hated it by now. For me it is unfinished and they should have not put time in the tower defense system (boring). Reasons why i hate it: Game crashed - even the task manager doesn´t recognize. Picture get frozen and any key does not anything. Same with putting skills on the right mouse button. If you get in the game or may be later you switch to another location, then going in a fight you recognize your electric blade doesnt work anymore (i died again - thx developers). The game has lost this defined option of the right mouse button and went back to the standard definition. F.... why? I choosed to play as a hunter - difficulty normal. Like other people mention you will die quite a lot. Even when you go down on easy mode. You must have luck to get the loot for the later levels or you are lost. The guns have no real output, so you have to switch to the blade to have a little kind of fun in the game. You waste ingame money to reset some skills and put then mostly to the blade. Then you have at least a kind of amount of damage that you can play that game on normal or easy mode. At the actual emotional level i would say "This game s....s."
